Horizontal perforated-plate baffles were shown to improve the cleaning efficiency of a flotation column when processing coal from two sources. The baffles consisted of flat plates with holes large enough to avoid plugging problems, and they improved the washing efficiency by making the flow patterns in the column closely approach plug flow. Tests with varying amounts of baffle open area showed that the optimum was between 30 and 40 per cent open area, which effectively prevented backmixing without seriously reducing capacity. The baffled column had previously been tested under ideal conditions with good results (87 per cent pyrite rejection at 85 per cent combustiles recovery), and so the tests reported here were intentionally run with difficult-to-float coals to determine the benefits of baffling under adverse conditions. For an original coal feed containing 38 per cent ash and 3.23 per cent total sulphur, the baffled column could recover 84 per cent of the combustibles while rejecting 84 per cent of the ash and approximately 54 per cent of the pyritic sulphur. Without baffles, the column recovered 88 per cent of the combustibles while rejecting only 76 per cent of the ash and 45 per cent of the pyritic sulphur. Subsequent tests with a dye tracer showed that the baffles reduced entrainment by approximately a factor of five, while the recovery was reduced by only a few per cent. Overall, the loss of capacity due to the baffles was more than offset by the improvement in product quality.

Applications of chlorine metallurgy to the extraction of metals often result in the production of volatile metallic chlorides, most of which condense directly to a solid phase at 1 atm pressure. A stirred-bed condenser suitable for the recovery of these materials is described.The unit, developed from the concept of a fluid bed condenser, has the advantages of versatility of operation and ability to control fog and dust formation. Test work using aluminium chloride vapour (as an example of a volatile chloride) gave recoveries approaching 100 per cent. The yield was dependent upon halide content of the vapour, flowrate, and, to a lesser extent, upon coolant temperature. Analysis of the heat transfer dataindicated condensation side coefficients in the range 10 to 30 B.T.U./hr sq. ft. 0p.

The Australian glass sand industry produces some 2.8 million tonnes per annum of silica sand, of which about 2.0 million tonnes are exported and the rest is for the domestic market. Approximate production rates for each Australian state are listed.The variety of processing methods used in the currently exploited deposits reflects the size, location, and characteristics of the various deposits and the requirement of the end market/s. The industry uses to a large extent equipment developed for the separation of mineral sands, particularly as it applies to low grade heavy mineral deposits, where low cost, high capacity and metallurgically efficient equipment has proved eminently suitable for the production of the low value glass sands.The requirements of the domestic market, as well as those of the present and potential export markets are discussed covering quality requirements, distribution channels and other factors critical to success.

This monograph presents a unified theory of adsorption and desorption of aurocyanide on activated carbon. This theory has proved useful for CIP/CIL carbon adsorption and Zadra and AARL elution process and equipment design; in accounting for the effects of various water qualities and process temperatures; and in the development of reagents to improve these processes. The theory presented is based on rigorous fundamentals : Classical Eyring theory links initial first order kinetics with Langmuir isotherm equilibria, and this isotherm is demonstrated for the first time to be a consequence of the activated complex postulate of Eyring theory. Simple extension to Freundlich conditions at high solution tenors is possible, but not presented. Supporting entropy data determined by the author includes practically all the pioneering CIP plants built in South Africa and Australia in the early 1980s.

The Lady Loretta lead-zinc-silver mineral isation of north-west Queensland was discovered first by Placer geologists in 1968 as a result of a geochemical soil survey. The stratigraphic position, mineralisation and rock associations of the deposit are very similar to those of the Mount Isa lead-zinc-silver orebodies. Aspects of the exploration history, geo- chemistry and structural geology of the Lady Loretta deposit, are discussed. A geometric model of the Ore Horizon is given.

Since its commercial in Australia at Broken Hill in the early part of the 20th century, the flotation process has grown to become the single most important minerals separation method available to mineral processing engineers. Statistics on flotation are impressive both in terms of growth of tonnages treated and in terms of the variety of separations accomplished. Because of the steady decline in the grade of ores and because many of the ores remaining are finely disseminated mixtures of minerals (many of them in a highly oxidized state) mineral processing scientists and engineers are now con- fronted with the problem of improving and modifying conventional flotation techniques so as to be able to effic- iently process these more refractory types of-ores. The flotation process did not come into being as the result of an intensive fundamental research effort but, in a similar way to so many other methods used in the processing of raw materials, it was developed over the years by the continued application of empirical methods. As a result, most of the basic research in this field has long been concerned with the problem of explaining why the existing process works so well. We are now at the stage where any further substan- tial extension of the flotation process will demand a more profound understanding of its fundamental principles. The demand for minerals will grow strongly to satisfy the needs of an increasing world population for materials and energy. The technical problems involved in producing these minerals will be daunting and the engineers who will have the responsibility for designing and controlling the mineral production processes must have a high level of skills. This will place a heavy responsibility on the education system. A small number of large, well equipped university departments dedicated to mineral processing and having a close working relationship with the mineral industry, and an international orientation, will be much better placed to meet the needs than a large number of small ill-equipped departments which find it difficult to remain viable in modem universities. Courses in mineral processing must be designed to meet the scientific and technological needs of industry and full use must be made of innovative educational techniques such as video conferencing in delivering the courses. The concept of a major international network of major mineral processing departments which is designed to make best use of scarce academic resources is important and should be considered by the International Committee of the IMPC.

is placed in a waste rock dump, which is usually later reshaped to be erosionally stable, initiate and sustain vegetation and ultimately integrate with the surrounding undisturbed landscape. However, it is unclear how this exhumed material will weather and evolve for most sites. Also, there is a lack of data on the weathering of post-mining materials. If weathering is better understood, then there is the potential to improve rehabilitation outcomes. To improve predictions of the evolution of soil properties and weathering-limited erosion, estimating the rate at which fine, transportable material is produced from the weathering of larger, non-transportable particles and the resultant fragment size distribution and how that distribution evolves over time is necessary. This study examines the weathering process for four different coalmine waste rock materials for a Bowen Basin, Queensland site. Materials obtained from various areas of the coalmine were subjected to cyclic wetting and drying and heating and cooling. Particle size distribution and other material properties were explored after each experimental cycle to ascertain how the material changes during the experimental cycles. The particle size distribution data of wet and dry cycles were used as input data in a numerical weathering model to explore the dynamics of the weathering process for each material sample. A Monte Carlo framework was employed to assess the geometry of the weathering products, weathering rate and the number of daughter particles produced within a weathering cycle. Then the SSSPAM Landscape Evolution Model was used to evaluate the influence of weathering on erosion and landscape evolution of a post mining landform. SSSPAM simulations with: (i) active weathering and (ii) without weathering were run for each material. The erosion rate and the overall landform structure were then compared between weathering and non-weathering simulations.

The Westerschelde tunnel will be the first permanent road link between the Dutch regions of South Beveland and South Flanders. Two tunnel tubes, each 6.6 km long, will be driven using the shield tunnelling method. The difficult ground conditions and a water pressure of up to 6.5 bar make great demands on the design. This paper describes the problems and their solutions.

Because of the coincidental location of orebodies and population in Australia, the mineral sands industry has been subjected to numerous land use conflicts, resulting in the sterilisation of strategic ore reserves and a severe downturn of activity in the eastern states. All tiers of government of various political persuasions were responsible for the decisions leading to this sterilisation. As such, it became a community response to intense land use pressure along an attractive and popular coastline. The resultant high public exposure of the industry has placed it in the forefront of developments in rehabilitation technology. In eastern Australia, the industry has operated in a wide range of ecosystems, many with conservation values. Rehabilitation ech- niques have been developed to suit these varied conditions, and much of this technology is now widely adopted throughout the mining industry. Land use considerations in Western Australia are somewhat different to those of the eastern states. Nevertheless, the same basic principles of rehabilitation apply with modification to suit local conditions and land use objectives. The development of rehabilitation in both Eastern and Western Australia is reviewed, and the direction of future trends is indicated.

Column flotation is receiving increased interest from both an industrial and research perspective in Australia. The traditional overseas application as a molybdenum cleaning cell is being expanded and a number of new applications as cleaners, scavengers and roughers are emerging in Australia. The success of column flotation has hinged on the new understanding developing from the work of Finch- and coworkers at McGill University, Canada, particularly in relation to scale-up parameters and model development. The aspiring column flotation user in Australia now a has wealth of experience to draw on when deciding on the correct procedure to follow during the process evaluation and plant installation stages of development. However, some aspects relating to column design, such as aeration mechanisms, require careful evaluation.

The depletion of easily mined high-grade ore bodies resulted in the industry having to exploit lower grade, complex resources (Albanese and McGagh, 2011; Darling, 2011; Randolph, 2011). The trend is now towards mining and processing of low-grade and complex ores (Darling, 2011; Yingling, 1990). Variable geological and mineralogical characteristics, and complex mineralogy and texture can result in large variations in metallurgical response and also cause challenges in processing. (Carson, 1995; Lorenzen and Barnard, 2011; Yingling, 1990). Variability and the complex nature of ores are fundamental sources of risk that often cause the greatest economic impact (Dusci et al., 2007; Williams and Richardson, 2004). Hence it is important to effectively characterise these types of ore bodies and assess their processing performance (ie recovery, grade). To enable this, there is a need for the following: (i) characterisation of geological, mineralogical and metallurgical variability in the ore body; (ii) effective selection of drill core with characteristics that represent the range of ores in the entire ore body. The paper focuses on how rock bolts are loaded in different rock masses, as well as in pullout tests. Three analytical models for rock bolts are presented in brief, one for bolts in continuously deformed rock masses, one for bolts in blocky rock masses, and one for bolts in pullout tests. The bolt models are used to interpret measurement data for rock bolts from three sources and to help specify the modes of axial load in the rock bolts. It is found that in continuously deformed rock formations fully coupled rock bolts have only one axial stress peak. The position of the axial stress peak moves towards the far end of the bolts with increasing rock deformation. In blocky rock masses several axial stress peaks may appear in the rock bolt. The position of this kind of axial stress peak does not change during the entire loading process. For rock bolts in pullout tests, decoupling of the interface always occurs first at the loading point. The decoupling front moves towards the far end of the bolt with an increase in the applied pull load.

The competitive coal market has required coal producers to put more effort into coal quality control. Successful quality control requires a good estimation of the in situ coal quality as well as a good estimation of the probable fluctuation of the in situ coal quality during production. Geostatistics offers a very promising way to meet this requirement. A geostatistical approach toward the coal quality control problem is presented. Two models, the prediction model and the conditional simulation model, have been developed for coal quality data from two large export coal mines in central Queensland, Australia. The mine planning and scheduling aspects based on this and other potential applications of the models are addressed.

This paper describes the autogenous carrier flotation of 0 - 20 ¦m ilmenite using 40 -- 80 }tm ilmenite as carrier. Investigation is made of the influence of main technological parameters on autogenous carrier flotation. The mechanism of autogenous carrier flotation is discussed using extended DLVO theory. The main conclusions are as follows: 1. the smaller the fine particles the more easily they adhere.to carriers; 2. the selectivity of autogenous carrier flotation depends on the selectivity of adsorption of collector. In the autogenous carrier flotation of ilmenite/plagioclase mixture assaying 15.35 per cent TiO2, a concentrate containing 47.17 per cent Ti02 can be obtained by primary separation with a recovery of 93.05 per cent. When driving mine roadways in the vicinity of tectonic disturbances and fault zones, sudden outbursts of gas, along with ejections of fine coal, occur. Substantial dynamic changes occur around the roadways in the coal and around the support. The problem has several aspects. Studies have been carried out on the technical analyses of the phenomena which occurred in the Velenje Lignite Mine from 1957 to 1988. The second part of the investigation involves systematic laboratory studies of strength and deformability characteristics of lignite samples and "in-situ" measurements of stress changes during the driving of some roadways. Analyses of events (using the model of limit convergence and the finite element method) showed the possibility of gas outbursts, taking into account the deformability conditions when crossing over from compact lignite to the disturbed region. The rate of advance of roadways and the method of support strongly influence the occurrence of the phenomenon. The preventative measures used in driving roadways under such conditions include trial drilling and the use of blasting instead of machine cutting.
