One of the fundamental parameters of the race- way is its extent (a{ o), which has a significant effect on the distribution of gas and material flows in the lower region of the furnace. pp The known relationships for determination of aC o in most cases link the length of the raceway with the parameters of the blast, while the para- meters of the coke layer, in which the raceway is formed, are either ignored or else expressed in terms which are difficult to determine experimen- tally. Furthermore, the coke combustion propert- ies are not always taken into account in current blast furnace operating practice with combined blast. A complex dimensionless parameter, which re- flects the properties of the interacting media, is the ratio of the kinetic energy of the hot, com- bined gas stream to the potential energy of the coke flow, burning at the tuyere in a gas of known composition. Statistical processing of experimental data on the extent of the raceway zone, obtained from literature and our own work on operational furnac- es, has led to a working formula of the following Form:

A microcomputer based expert system is presented for fast and cheap mineral identification. Because of the increasing pipularityof and interest for minerals and precious stones (selling, hobby polishing, collecting, teaching etc.) we pointedly deal with gemstone identification. In most cases only some fundamental data are needed to identify a mineral sample (or precious stone) if we know how to use these data. The important, characterizing data of the well-known minerals are stored in the data-base of our program-system. The visible and measured optical and physical properties of the sample are compared adequately with the stored data to get the result, the name of the examined mineral. The system works in a simple, friendly way - asking questions, understanding answers - so that no special computer knowledge is necessary to use it, only the answers should be typed in. The main advantage of the system is that only relatively simple and fast measure-ments are required. Based on these measurements a fast, reliable identification is processed on a cheap com-puter running a sophisticated program-system. The MINTEST system handles even those cases when the tested mineral cannot be determined based on the given input data.

Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (B.O.S.) commenced in Australia in December, 1962. Two 200-ton furnaces were installed initially at Newcastle with a 50-ton furnace coupled to a continuous casting machine added in 1967. In 1965, two 100-ton furnaces were installed at Whyalla plant and two 225-ton furnaces are nearing com- pletion at Port Kembla to commence oper- ations in 1972. Plant layouts in each centre differ due to changing circumstance and increasing knowledge of the B.O.S. process since 1962. Raw materials are a most important factor for good operation of the process. Most materials come from within Australia but some are imported. General operating practices are similar in each plant, although treatment of fume at Port Kembla will be by the OG (Oxygen Converter Gas Recovery) Process as against electrostatic precipitators in Newcastle and Whyalla. Special alloy steels as well as plain carbon steels can be made by the B.O.S. process. Production potential of the process in Australia has yet to be fully utilised with 45 per cent of steel production coming from B.O.S. In 1971.

The oxidation of sphalerite particles of 60 to 100 mesh size was studied in a fluidized bed of low 02 concentration at 900¦C. Par- tial pressure of 02 in the fluidizing 02-N2 gas mixture was chosen between 0.0009 and 0.02 atm. In the region of p02 between 0.008 and 0.02 atm, the oxidation rate was lowered with the decrease of p02, and the unreacted-core model was applied. At lower pbelow 0.008 atm, the reaction rate was enhanced as compared with the calcu- lated values from the unreacted-core model. From microscopic examination, it was found that ZnS was evaporated at the particle surface and the dissociated Zn vapor was oxidized in the gas phase. Initial reaction rate and the distance between the surface of inner sphaler- ite core and the oxide shell were studied based on the model of enhanced oxidation.

Mining-induced seismicity at Junction Gold Mine became a serious operational problem in the late-1990s. Assessing the local seismic hazard is an important step in assessing the risk associated with potential rockbursting. This paper discusses the qualitative and quantitative means of assessing seismic hazard used at Junction. In qualitative hazard assessment, the role of the primary factors contributing to mining-induced seismicity and rockbursting are identified. These factors include: rock mass properties, geological structures, mine development, and stoping. A qualitative seismic hazard map has been developed considering these factors. In quantitative hazard assessment, seismic source parameters from an Integrated Seismic System are used to assess seismic hazard. The seismic source parameters found to be relevant to seismic hazard assessment at Junction are discussed.

Since the mid-1970s there has been increasing attention in the South Pacific area to the problems of disaster planning and management at various levels, mainly from regional through national to provincial levels. This concern has been expressed in a variety of ways. International aid donors have made their views known in commentaries or reports. Seminar discussions have been organised at the regional level (such as at Suva, 1976; Suva, 1979; Tonga, 1982 and Suva, 1983). In-country training workshops or meetings have been organised (such as the "Disaster Preparedness Workshops for Non-governmental Organisations" in Pacific countries, jointly run by the Australian Red Cross and the Australian Overseas Disaster Response Organisation and supported by AIDAB, in Vanuatu, 1985; Solomon Islands, 1985; Western Samoa, 1986; Fiji, 1987; Tonga, 1987; Lae and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 1988) or held outside the area (ACDC at Macedon, 1981). Training and/or research institutions have been established such as the East-West Center, Honolulu, and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, Bangkok (more Asia oriented). As part of the East-West Center Pacific Islands Development Program's Disaster Preparedness Project, a detailed manual of disaster preparedness and response procedures and guidelines has been published (Carter, 1984).Table 1 and figure 1 show that the area with which this discussion deals is a highly fragmented island region, comprising many small, some minute, nations, both in land area and population. The social structure is predominantly rural, with the capital city often making up a small part of the total population and, in absolute terms, little more than a small town. Outside the administrative and governmental activities concentrated in the capitals, in most cases the indigenous inhabitants depend on subsistence agriculture or on usually a monocultural concentration on a cash crop, most frequently coconuts.

Mr. P. F. THOMPSON said this matter was one of very great importance to producers of lead. His association with the matter was that he happened to be the Institute representative on the Committee of the Standards Association of Australia charged with formulating a standard for chemical lead, that is, lead used in technical chemistry for acid chambers and the like. The British standard had this test incorporated in it, but those on the committee felt that it should not be included in the specification. The main objection was that in an accelerated corrosion test one was endeavouring to do in a few seconds what in natural conditions would take years; and it was now being recognised that such tests were of little value in assessing the corrosive properties of a metal.The flash point test was carried out with boiling hot strong sulphuric acid; but no chemical manufacturer would be likely to use such in contact with lead. There were many factors such as the formation of steam, the chemical reduction of sulphuric acid, the evolution of hydrogen, the catalytic effect of the surface lead, affecting this test, other than the presence of the segregated impurities upon which this test throws the onus of the whole imperfection of the lead. Mr. Russell had shown that lead which had stood the test of time often gave a low flash point. They were endeavouring to find rapid methods of estimating minute amounts of the more important impurities, which would eliminate the labour and expense of a full analysis.Mr. H. St. J. A well-maintained and low cost mining operation today requires the use of condition monitoring techniques. At ERA - Ranger Mine oil analysis, vibration monitoring, infra-red themtography, and performance analysis have been successfully applied over the last four years to lower operating and maintenance costs. All condition monitoring is scheduled through a comprehensive in-house developed maintenance management system known as the Engineering Information System (EIS). (EIS) is used extensively at Ranger to ensure consistent frequency and recording .of all condition monitoring data. This paper provides an insight into the benefits of condition monitoring and explores the future direction for condition monitoring techniques at Ranger.

This subject is to be discussed in greater depth by Mike Sharwood. It has also been the subject of a mini-symposium by the Melbourne Branch of the AusIMM in October, 1993. The papers from this symposium were distributed to the membership late last year "to raise their consciousness and to promote greater awareness and understanding of the wide range of liabilities that may arise". The use of shotcrete as an efficient means of both temporary and permanent ground support has continued to grow over the last 30 years, with its use underground now commonplace around the world. However, the development of analytical design methods has lagged advances in material and application technologies. Historically, part of the reason for this was a lack of understanding of how shotcrete linings actually worked. Considerable progress has been made in this area in recent years and this paper attempts to summarise the current state of practice with respect to shotcrete lining design. It then concludes by summarising areas where the authors consider future research and development is still required.

Inadequate understanding and/or assessment of technical and economic risk associated with geological uncertainty are key reasons many mining projects do not achieve forecast profitability. In the last 20 years many new and existing mines have experienced geology related problems, including lower than planned development and production rates, geotechnical/stability issues, unplanned dilution, ore loss, reduced metallurgical performance, environmental management concerns and unbudgeted capital/operating costs. Greater emphasis on the evaluation and communication of uncertainty associated with geological interpretations for feasibility and operations management results in better decision-making. The outcome of better decision-making is more efficient mining yielding enhanced financial returns for the mining industry.

The passage of a vast array of new State and Federal environmental legislation over the last couple of years has required many mine operators to sharpen their focus on environmental requirements. Established requirements, such as environmental impact assessment, minimising disturbance and rehabilitation must now be complemented by mine environmental management plans. These may not only require regular monitoring of mine operations and detailed forward planning to prevent or reduce environmental harm caused during mine operation, but annual updating. It is likely that in future these plans will be required to incorporate general principles such as pollution prevention, sustainable development, waste minimisation and conservation of biodiversity and ecological integrity.

Spiral separators have been used to treat heavy mineralsands in Australia for some 35 years. During the last five years the logical extension of this technology has been torecover cassiterite from alluvial deposits. Plants incorporating spirals are already operating in Indonesian andAustralian tin mines. A more fundamental understanding of the design of spiral separators has recently led to their use in other mineral treatment plants.In particular, the treatment of alluvial gold and fine coal has been most successful. The new generation of spirals that has been developed to treat these minerals is more easily operated than other competing processes and is therefore ideal for new mine situations.

Drilling and blasting practices at Groote Eylandt are undergoing a period of rapid change. Practices over the last ten years are reviewed and some specific blasting problems currently being faced are described. A move from percussion to rotary drilling is outlined, together with the reasoning behind a proposed return to ANFO from watergel explosives. A brief outline of the various firing patterns used is given, together with a description of the drilling and blasting recording procedures currently in use. Current and planned developments in drilling and blasting at Groote Eylandt are also outlined, emphasizing the success of wide patterns, fired in line with long inter-row delays.

One of the most dramatic changes, from a geological perspective, is the reduction of in-house geological staffing and an ever increasing reliance on contract and consulting services. As a result, there has been a change in the way geological information is generated, managed and retained within the industry. This paper describes the changes that have taken place in the industry, provides two case studies of how companies manage their geological Intellectual Property and reviews some of the issues associated with management of in-house and outsourced geology services.

Mining, metallurgical and engineering consultants have made a considerable contribution to mining industry development in Australia. Expertise has been developed locally to a high level during the last decade which has contributed to the success of many recent mining projects. The services available'cover the whole spectrum from the evaluation of ore reserves, through feasibility study and financial evaluation to design, project management and commissioning. Using these services effectively and economically is an objective which client and consultant both must pursue but which is not always achieved. The Mt. Sisa Orebody on Misima Island, P.N.G., consists of gold-silver mineralization associated with massive carbonate and amor- phous iron-manganese oxides in fractures and breccia matrix. The orebody forms the north- ern extension of the Umuna deposit. The mineralization lies within the three kilometre strike length of a northwest trending, 300 metre wide, high angle fault zone. The fault zone structure is deeply oxidi- sed, with the manganiferous oxide material resulting from oxidation of carbonate. The wallrocks are metamorphosed basement psammopelites and basic volcanic rocks, exten- sively intruded by microgranodiorite. These are dominantly epidotized and sericitized. The precious metals are associated with anomalous Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, As, Ba, Ga, Sb, and. Mo. Many of the features of the Mt.Sisa mineralization are characteristic of volcanic- hosted epithermal deposits of western North' America. Lithologic and textural gradation is ob- served between the carbonate hydrothermal breccia-fill at Mt. Sisa, and the quartz domi- nated dilational fracture-fill mineralization which forms most of the Umuna deposit to the south. This gradational relationship is ana- logous to that within the Amethyst-OH vein system at Creede, Colorado, where it is shown to be indicative of deposition from laterally migrating fluids.

The Proterozoic Pb-Zn deposits of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia, include HYC (McArthur River), Mt. Isa, Dugald River, Lady Loretta and Hilton. Two seamingly incom- patible depositional models have been proposed to account for their origin. Finlow-Bates (1980), Large (1983) and Russell(1983) classify these-deposits as sediment-hosted submarine exhalative deposits. This class includes Rammelsberg, Meggen, Silvermines, Sullivan and others. In contrast, a lacus- trine, shallow-water origin has been advocated by Williams and Logan (1981), Logan and Williams (1984), Muir (1983) and Eugster (1985). The discrepancies between these two models can be removed by creating a separate class, that of continental sediment-hosted exhalative deposits.. HYC., Mt. Isa and Dugald belong to this class and their sediments were deposited in shallow, alkaline lakes. Metal- rich, hot, Na-Ca-Cl brines entered the basins along boundary faults and interacted with pore fluids and sediments, depositing-Cu-Zn-Pb sul- fides. Similar brines entered the Lady Loretta basin after marine flooding, depositing sulfi- des and barite, placing Lady Loretta into the class of marine Sedex deposits.

Since 1960, the Dongchuan Copper Mining Bureau, Yunnan Province, China, has treated copper oxidised ores by sulphidisation - flotation technique only to recover copper. In order to improve the metallurgical performances and economics of flotation, extensive development work has been carried out during the past 30 years: several specific flotation flowsheets have evolved from the originally selected `stage - grinding and stage - flotation' flowsheet to suit various ores; the overall grinding size of the ores has been increased from 80 per cent - 200 mesh to 90 per cent - 200 mesh, resulting in significant increase in copper recovery; the substitution of CaS for NazS proved to be successful in sulphidisation of copper oxidised minerals, and also in avoiding the depressing effect of Na2S on copper sulphide minerals; the application of a number of activators of copper oxidised minerals, especially ethylene diamine phosphate, has considerably improved the flotation performance and decreased the consumptions of other reagents. Finally, the combined use of sodium hydroximate with butyl xanthate has been shown to be effective in enhancing the floatability of both copper oxidised and sulphide minerals.

Extractive metallurgy in the mining industry in Western Australia has diversified and increased in the last 11 years. Before 1980, the industry mainly produced alumina, nickel, mineral sands and iron ore, with the gold industry restricted to five operating plants using Merrill-Crowe technology. In 1981 Carbon-in-pulp (C]P) plants were commissioned at Kambalda, Kalgoorlie and Meekatharra.Currently, the gold industry has some seventy CIP plants in operation, production of synthetic rutile has increased tenfold to 500 000 tpa, alumina production has doubled and production of copper, lead and zinc concentrates has begun. Other extractive metallurgy plants recover tin, niobium and tantalum, silicon, titanium dioxide and zirconia. Current proposals include vanadium, steel and rare earths.
