St Helena tunnel is the centrepiece of the Pacific Highway upgrade from Tintenbar to Ewingsdale, abbreviated and commonly known as T2E. At the deepest point the twin tunnels run 45 m below the ridge line of St Helena Hill, located about 5 km west of Byron Bay. The tunnel breakthrough was achieved early in 2014 and the works for permanent lining will be completed in early 2015.Once the project will be handed over to the public in 2015, T2E will deliver a safer highway and uninterrupted traffic flow between New South Wales and Queensland. The design speed in the project area has been set to 110 km/h by the client Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), which will reduce the travel times between Brisbane and Ballina to just over two hours.The two tubes of the tunnel have been designed to accommodate three lanes in each direction with shoulders and walkways on either side of the carriageway. These requirements result in a huge cross-section of about 20 m width and an excavated area of about 210 m2.With the tunnel alignment being situated in basaltic rock, St Helena tunnel is conventionally driven. The selected excavation method was predominantly drill-and-blast with temporary support being installed immediately after the excavation. Despite the wide span of the tunnel, the geology allowed the tunnel perimeter to be supported by only rock bolts and a layer of shotcrete over the majority of its length.Due to environmental reasons one of the approval criteria of the project was that the tunnel must not have a detrimental long-term impact on the groundwater system within St Helena Hill. Consequently the tunnel has been designed as a fully tanked structure with a waterproofing sheet membrane installed on the temporary shotcrete.The permanent structure of the tunnel has to meet a 100-year design life and it is designed as a cast in situ concrete lining. Considering the water pressure on the lining the concrete is reinforced with a significant amount of bar reinforcement.The presented paper provides a more detailed explanation of the geology and the consequential temporary and permanent support measures together with the waterproofing system.CITATION:Mueller, A M, 2014. Recycled cement paste (RCP) is a kind of CaO-rich recourse, which is separated and recycled from waste concrete. Due to its chemical composition, RCP could partially replace lime as a flux and be loaded into electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking process. Rapid RCP assimilation and liquid slag formation have significant effects on EAF steelmaking process. In this study, the dissolution behaviours of RCP and lime at temperatures of 1400°C to 1500°C were investigated using static dissolution experiment. The dissolution rate, interfacial microstructure, as well as dissolution mechanisms were discussed. It was found that the dissolution rate of RCP was much higher than that of lime. RCP could be completely dissolved into slag in 60 secs at 1500°C. The dissolution rate of lime was in range of 3.910-4 g/(cm2ꞏs) to 2.610-3 g/(cm2ꞏs), while that for RCP was in range of 1.510-3 g/(cm2ꞏs) to 4.910-3 g/(cm2ꞏs). As for lime dissolution, a dense layer of dicalcium silicate (C2S) generated at the dissolution interface, and the diffusion of Ca2+ in C2S layer was the limited step for lime dissolution. Some of calcium ferrite could be observed at the interface between lime and C2S layer. As for the RCP dissolution, there is no obvious product layer of C2S formed at the dissolution interface, Fe2+ continuously diffused into RCP layer during the dissolution, and small amount of FeOꞏMgO solid solution generated and gathered at the dissolution interface. The dissolution rate of RCP in EAF slag was quite higher than that of lime, partially add RCP as flux in EAF could accelerate the slag formation process.

Pressure leaching of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore was carried out at 150 and 190¦C under 1050 kPa oxygen overpressure in 1 L and 4 L titanium autoclaves to extract zinc, and to obtain residues for smelting tests and leach liquors for purification and recovery of the zinc by electrowinning. Dissolution of 95% of the zinc was achieved at both temperatures. Copper and iron dissolution and the degree of oxidation of the sulphide sulphur to elemental sulphur or sulphate depended on the temperature of the leach. At 190¦C, a jarosite (a basic iron sulphate) was the major iron-containing material in a residue that contained 17% total sulphur. Its formation was associated with dissolution of 18% of the iron. At 150¦C, oxidation of the sulphide sulphur and dissolution of the iron were significantly less. Only 7% of the iron was dissolved and a residue containing 25% total sulphur, present as a lead jarosite, lead sulphate, and elemental sulphur, was obtained. The formation of small pellets of unreacted sulphides coated with elemental sulphur caused problems during the leaching at 150¦C, and also during scale-up from the 1 L to the 4 L autoclave at 190¦C. At 150¦C the concentrate required two stages of leaching to achieve dissolution of over 90% of the zinc. These problems are discussed.

To our geologists at Eldorado Gold Corporation, the release of the gold assays on a new ore zone causes a flurry of excitement. But to our metallurgists, that news is often greeted with the question ‘What’s the sulfur grade’? In our company, we operate and manage projects whose end-product will either be auriferous sulfide flotation concentrate or gold doré. Almost all of the steps in the ore processing are related to sulfur (in this paper specifically sulfide sulfur). So why do we geologists wait until late in a project or into production before collecting sulfur data for mine planning and ore control purposes?Gold deposits associated with sulfides commonly use a metallurgical process that begins with a flotation step to recover gold into a smaller mass known as flotation concentrate. Often, this step solely targets the sulfide minerals with gold only coming along for the ‘ride’. As a result, the gold grade in the concentrate is primarily influenced by the ratio of gold to sulfur in the feed. Should this concentrate require a refractory process downstream (eg pressure oxidation), knowing sulfur grade is critical as sulfur controls heat balance in the process. Regardless, we need sulfur models to be as robust as gold models, and created much earlier in the project evaluation process.Sulfur models require quality data collected at the same density as gold samples. Analytical methods must match expected grade ranges and quality assurance quality control (QA/QC) protocols and must be of the same integrity as in use for gold. Sulfur models will then be created by their own data analyses, interpolation protocols and validation. Furthermore, ore control systems should be designed for regular sulfur monitoring to ensure and enhance downstream value. Given time it should become habitual for geologists to likewise ask, ‘And what’s the sulfur grade’, or more specifically, ‘What’s the gold to sulfur ratio’?CITATION:Juras, S, 2017. Batch experiments in a 0.6 m diameter mill have shown that improvements of about 13 per cent in the efficiency of energy utilisation can be realised in ball mills by replacing 25 per cent of the ball charge by an equivalent volume of cost-free critical size pebbles from AG/SAG mills. For a mill of a given size, speed and charge filling, the rate of size reduction of ore particles depends on (i) the frequency of grinding media collisions (ii) the probability of capture of ore particles between the colliding grinding media (iii) the probability of fracture of the captured particles. The probability of fracture depends on the magnitude of collision energy. The distribution of collision energy into shear and impact events determines the relative strengths of attrition breakage and impact breakage. The efficiency of energy utilisation depends on which of the two mechanisms of breakage is more desirable in a particular milling stage. In this paper collision data from a series of DEM simulations of a mill charged with steel media and a mixture of steel media and pebbles is presented in energy spectra and spatial distribution maps. The data provides the necessary detail to elucidate the improvements in the efficiency of energy utilisation in ball mills when using a mixture of pebbles and steel media.

Acidic and metal-rich waters have been discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand since the closure of the mine during the early- 1990s. This has resulted in a decrease in pH from a background of 4.5 to 2.8 and an increase in metallic elements in nearby Rapid Stream. In addition to the chemical effects on Rapid Stream, a study of freshwater macro-invertebrates revealed the absence of most biota downstream from the discharge. An attempt is being made to use the Sullivan Mine as a case study of problem and remediation analysis.

Narrow vein mining, as most types of mining, faces important geotechnical challenges. The specificity of geotechnical challenges in narrow vein mines stems from the nature of the deposits, which are often inclined, discordant and found within fractured rock or faults or in shear zones within country rock. This complicates the construction of representative geomechanical models and limits the applicability of several engineering design tools. Furthermore, in certain cases, the severity of encountered geotechnical problems is considerably greater in narrow vein than in wider orebodies. This paper provides an overview of geotechnical and other challenges in narrow vein mines with a focus on how these are currently addressed. Of particular concern is the use of manual labour working close to the mining face where there is greater exposure to geomechanical hazards. This review concludes with a particular emphasis on understanding the limitations of commonly used engineering tools and techniques to address geotechnical problems in narrow vein mines.CITATION:Hadjigeorgiou, J, 2012. With a focus on safe productive tonnes, there has been an ongoing drive to increase the productivity of the mining fleet across BHP Billiton. In response, a team from the Iron Ore business was formed to review all aspects of the end-to-end drill and blast process and to challenge conventional practices that limit production efficiency. As a result of the outcomes of this work, a number of initiatives were identified to improve operational practices that have also delivered significant cost savings.One such initiative was to increase pattern size to a minimum of 1 Mt where practicable, thereby creating ‘megablast’ as a new standard across all mines. To achieve blasts of this size, the team had to overcome the complex problem of integrating wall control into the megablasts.With traditional blasting techniques, the key strategy, which is also historically inefficient but was thought to be integral to having stable, safe walls, was to utilise the trim blasting/modified production blasts technique (ie narrow blasts along the pit wall designed to ‘peel off’ the material while minimising the effects of vibration and charge confinement on wall integrity).Small traditional trim patterns comprise three to four rows of production holes and one or two rows of batter/buffer holes of reduced diameter that require the firing face to be completely exposed before blasting. This is an extremely slow process that requires a lot of resources for very little tonnage while adding additional expense to the final cost per tonne.This paper will show how the megablast approach was developed to control damaging vibration and confinement effects, flyrock and fragmentation while having the largest possible blast that includes wall control. The new practice is based on a theory that involves the initiation point and control row being the second row of holes from the pit wall itself. Adjusted charges in vented batter and buffer holes help to achieve an optimal toe design, and at the same time create a zone of broken ground that absorbs damaging vibrations formed by the attached production blast of any size, whether it is a straight wall or a multi-angled complex pit shell design.Using the new style of blasting has allowed an increase in the size of the patterns from an average of 300 kt to over 1 Mt whilst maintaining pit wall integrity. Case studies will be presented showing drill, charge and tie-in designs with the presentation having additional blast videos, including overall shots of blasts and in-close footage of what happens behind the blast at the crest of the planned catchment berm.The paper will also demonstrate the flow-on effect of using this style of blasting to reduce operational costs associated with other downstream processes, such as the reduced requirements for pattern preparation, an increase in productive digging, reduced maintenance costs and a decrease in fuel burn for equipment.CITATION:Green, B, 2015. Geomembrane (GMB) liners are being used more frequently for the storage or capping of mine waste due to stricter regulatory requirements relating to environmental protection. The longevity of any liner system will be a function of environmental conditions, design (including materials selection), construction and condition monitoring during operations or closure. Based on experience and case studies, this paper presents a review, from design to handover, of some of the smaller and often overlooked details that can have significant impacts on the performance of the GMB and the project overall.The topics covered will include approaches to selecting and testing GMBs to ensure they are suitable. Design considerations to aid installation and quality assurance during construction. Understanding action leakage rates and the consequences of leakage when it creates whales. The design and optimisation of mineral flotation circuits is currently performed using a combination of laboratory, pilot plant and full scale testing. Owing to the variable nature of flotation circuits and the complex nature of the flotation process, it is difficult to interpret the data collected from flotation testwork. JKSimFloat is a computer modelling package which is being developed to interpret flotation testwork data collected at the various stages of the mining cycle. The parameters derived from the program can be used to assess potential circuit configurations in both the design of new flotation circuits and in the refinement of existing operations. The aim of this paper is to outline the modelling methodology used in JKSimFloat and to outline how it can be used effectively to model data collected from either the laboratory, the pilot plant or the existing flotation circuit. The use of flotation model parameters in circuit evaluation will be demonstrated via the use of a case study based on data collected from ComincoÆs Red Dog lead flotation circuit.

Rail, port and shipping charges represent 30 to 50 per cent of landed costs for Australian coal mines selling to Asia. This proportion is higher for sales to Europe, yet it is in Europe where Australian producers are aiming for increased market share. The landed cost of coal to the international customer is the key parameter which determines market competitiveness. The objective of this study is to examine Australian export coal competitiveness in terms of transport distance. The approach used examines world coking coal and steaming coal production and the transport distances between major exporting regions and importing countries. Reference is made to the importance of land transport costs and a comparative approach for emphasising the relative magnitude of this factor is developed. Models developed are examined in terms of Australia's exports and a conclusion is reached that a reduction in rail freight costs would be an effective measure for improving the competitiveness of Australia's coal industry.

The extraction of gold and silver from chalcopyrite concentrates has been investigated. In view of the recent interest in non-cyanide leachants for gold and silver, one such alternative reagent, namely thiourea, has been employed in the present work. Precious metal leaching was attempted from received copper concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates. Pre-oxidation of the concentrates was carried out by three different methods, namely roasting, pressure oxidation and biological oxidation. After pre-oxidation and leaching of the base metals, the leach residues were subjected to further leaching for precious metal extraction. The results obtained on the extraction of gold and silver from received concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates are presented and the effectiveness of the three pre-oxidation routes employed is compared.

A low-cost methodology that allows the determination of in situ stresses using oriented core specimens has been investigated. The technique can be used to determine the stresses during the early stages of a project, even in undeveloped areas of a mine. The research aim was to compare the experimental results estimated by the Acoustic Emission and Deformation Rate Analysis methods with those estimated by conventional Hollow Inclusion cell measurements. The studies have been focused on full stress tensor determination from a single oriented rock core. In all cases the rock core specimens recollected the in situ stresses reasonably well compared with the standard overcoring method.

The extractive industries response to community engagement due to social and political pressures in the 1980s and 1990s was the starting point of development leading to the modern function of corporate social responsibility.Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater transparency and responsibility of corporate organisations and who possess greater awareness of the communities they participate in, the mining sector faces another step change in how it approaches and integrates corporate social responsibility, transparency and engagement.Mining is seeking reserves of lower grades, in more sensitive environments and in countries with minimal transparency and governance. Not only are the locations changing but so to the stakeholders to engage with and issues to contend with. An increasingly savvy opposition, including not just the ‘green hippies’ but the Gen-Ys interested in the wider sustainability debate and Baby Boomers moving to life style environments, are now questioning mining’s behaviour and encroachment into ‘their space’. Issues including effect on lifestyle amenity, property value, energy efficiency, social provision; concepts such as ‘doing more with less’, participatory engagement, increasing transparency and balancing economic, environment, cultural and social aspects are becoming the norm.The traditional model of supporting local communities, communicating plans and providing employment, community investment and indigenous support programs is not enough. Our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities and play a role in addressing the global sustainability issues.This paper draws on corporate social responsibility trends, integrated functions and implementation approaches through the application of activities within Newmont operations across Asia Pacific.The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities do not necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.

The Harbour Lights Mine situated at Leonora in Western Australia, mines a refractory sulphidic gold ore. The main sulphide minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite. Due to the association of gold with the pyrite and arsenopyrite, gold recovery is not amenable to the normal cyanidation process.A pyrite/arsenopyrite flotation concentrate is produced at Harbour Lights. This concentrate has been stockpiled for the past two years.A bio-oxidation process (BIOX«)* to treat refractory gold flotation concentrates has been developed by GENMIN in South Africa. Harbour Lights acquired the technology from CRL BIOX« Pty Limited in Brisbane, to treat the refractory gold concentrates.

These may be found with goethite through mechanisms including direct substitution or coprecipitation of nanocrystalline phases. Understanding P incorporation in goethite has significant implications for Australia’s iron ore industry as it lowers their commodity value. The current study tests a novel low-temperature technique to extract P impurities from synthetic goethite phases under O2-free ambient conditions by utilising Fe(II)-catalysed recrystallisation. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of the Fe(II)-catalysed recrystallisation of goethite on the geochemical behaviour (mobility and speciation) of co-associated P. To achieve this, we tracked changes in labile P (aqueous and 1M NaOH extractable) concentrations over time in goethite suspensions which were reacted with Fe(II)aq for 14 days under circumneutral pH conditions and room temperature conditions. Temporal changes in Fe mineralogy were investigated via synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Iron K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy confirmed goethite as the only mineral phase in P-free treatments while goethite (~86 per cent) and feroxyhyte (~14 per cent) were the main phases in 1.0 per cent P-containing treatments after a 14- day reaction with Fe(II)aq. According to our findings, the treatment of P-goethite with Fe(II) for a duration of 7–14 days, followed by a 24-hour extraction of the reacted solids using 1M NaOH, results in the removal of approximately 79.5 per cent of the initial P content. This removal encompasses both the aqueous fraction (~4.5 per cent) and the surface adsorbed fraction (~75 per cent) from the 1 per cent P-bearing mineral phase. Notably, this approach demonstrates an improvement in P extractability, with approximately a 10 per cent increase compared to the 1 per cent P-goethite sample that was not reacted with Fe(II).

Coal and gas outburst is a common hazard in coalmines and due to the complexity of its nature, efficaciously predicting the possibility of its occurrence is intricate. The mechanical and gas flow properties of coal, in situ and mining-induced stresses and geological structure are involved in outburst occurrence, whereas suggested thresholds for its prediction do not consider them all. Numerical modelling is known as an effective method that can not only consider couple the effect of different physics but also analyse the effect of associated parameters. In this paper, a coupled fluid flow and geomechanics model has been developed in COMSOL Multiphysics to simulate outbursts by considering the effect of gas pressure and composition, damage mechanics on related coal properties, and progressive excavation and mining-induced stress. For the proposed fully coupled outburst model, the effect of pore pressure and sorption are applied to the stress while the influence of stress changes and damage are considered in updating coal porosity and permeability in each time step. In addition, to study the effect of mining-induced stress, the excavation process is simulated by changing the material properties over time according to the schedule of heading development. Then, outburst initiation is analysed from the energy point of view by using the concept of energy conservation law. The simulation results are used in calculating energy sources of the outburst initiation, also, the effect of particle size and ejection velocity are studied, and the significance of particle size effect on the energy analysis and deformed coal on outburst initiation is discussed.

The general perspective has been taken from the viewpoint of operating and maintenance experience.The sequence begins with ore breaking and transport and proceeds through milling operations. The paper is in two sections, first, mechanical equipment, second, electrical equipment. A brief outline of a scheme for using gravel wash for stope filling, which is in course of installation, has also been given.

This paper discusses the development of a strategy for ensuring long-term geotechnical stability of final pit walls at AngloGold AustraliaÆs Sunrise Dam Gold Mine. The strategy makes use of improved blasting techniques, changes to the mining sequence and other geotechnical techniques. Only the blasting techniques will be discussed in this paper. These were developed from numerous trials over a period of several months from May 2003 through to November 2003. The focus was to reduce crest loss damage and thereby improve final wall integrity, maintain designed safe berm widths, and ensure long-term stability. Crest loss mechanisms are now understood and are explained in this paper. The preferred solution is outlined; which is a combination of improved blasting and changes in the mining sequence to cater for pre-existing ground conditions. These ground conditions include dynamic hyper saline water with sometimes intersecting steeply dipping discrete structures. Project requirements were defined as mitigating or eliminating crest loss using 127 mm diameter pre-splitting and targeting minimal production blasting vibration levels against the walls. Blast results were measured by post blast visual inspections and video. Blast design input utilised the predictive algorithms built into simulation software when attempting to minimise vibration levels against the walls. Protection of the already fired pre-split line is now achieved using small charges against the wall and timing sequences which form a mask for the later firing main charges. The pre-split spacing is now modified to suit the geology. There eight blast domains identified around the perimeter of the pit, each having varying joint orientation. In addition, blasting the bench adjacent to the berm crest has particular considerations not required by the middle and lower benches. The preferred solution was to purposefully translate this damaged top section of the pre-split bench into a planned subsequent dig zone. The design of this top æweightÆ is a direct response to the nature of the crest loss mechanism.

Environmental compliance and mine designs are increasingly including assessment of flows and water qualities as a key driver to decision-making over life-of-mine. Integrated site-wide water quality models linked to dynamic water balances have been used for regulatory submissions, feasibility studies, operating mines and mine closure studies. These models, developed in GoldSim, link aqueous chemistry to the physical system of the site-wide water balance. Geochemical mechanisms included are determined from geochemical characterisation and site water monitoring, depending on the data availability at each site. External geochemical modelling using PHREEQC, version 2 (by D?L?Parkhurst and C?A?J?Appelo) and Geochemists Workbench (GWB), (by C?M?Bethke and The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois) identifies the most important geochemical processes to be included in the model as a series of geochemical mechanisms which include source term loading rates, pH-buffering and equilibration of water quality. Water balance components include seasonal flow variability; waste facility water storage and system lags; run-off variability; milling processes and tailings production as a function of ore types; simulation of automated and scheduled maintenance of settling ponds; water re-routing for water treatment and freshwater demand, usage and storage.Case studies illustrating the use of these models for regulatory submissions and mine feasibility studies in a variety of climatic and regulatory environments show the utility and applicability of these models. Site-specific examples of these models developed by Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd are currently used at operating mines across the world. One of the larger mines where this is used is a mature poly-metallic mine in South America where the model has aided mine managers in understanding how various planned initiatives and potential water options will result in changes to flows and water quality. It is used regularly to inform water and waste management to minimise impacts to the receiving environment as a consideration of both flows and concentrations. The mine has also used the model in support of water treatment design, regulatory submissions and mine closure planning.Further examples of feasibility and operational/compliance assessment in arid and strongly seasonal environments for planning, regulatory and closure consideration of mine wastes and pits have shown the utility and usefulness of these approaches for a range of mining operations at various stages of mine life.CITATION:Strand, R and Usher, B, ?2014.
