Since the mid-1990s, the Chino Mine Facility (Chino) located near Silver City, New Mexico has been developing a closure plan with financial assurance to protect water quality, as required by State regulations. In February 2002, Chino and the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) reached agreement on a closure plan; a closure cost amount of approximately $US 394 million ($A 591 million) was finalised in April 2003. Both the New Mexico Water Quality Act Regulations (1977) and the New Mexico Mining Act Regulations (1993) guided development of the closure plan and financial assurance amount. The process incorporated many years of correspondence, studies, negotiations and administrative hearings. The major technical issues focused on regrading slopes of the leach ore stockpiles and waste rock piles; cover systems; water treatment systems; and abatement of ground water contamination. The proposed financial assurance amount covers all closure costs and provides for perpetual water treatment.

The distribution of platinum-group elements (pGEs) has been investigated in matte and slag samples from Waterval Smelter (Rustenburg Platinum Mines). The study showed that a strong preference of PGEs for alloy phases in matte represents a concentration mechanism that commenced in the furnace but can be considered a continuum from natural processes. Metal losses to fayalite (converter) slag occur by matte entrainment due to the mechanical capture of liquid sulphide droplets from the matte layer, and the exsolution of dissolved metal sulphide resulting from changes in the oxidation state of the slag. The latter is comparable to immiscible sulphide in basic magmas. However, the observed distribution of PGEs shows enrichment in metal phases of the matte. A mechanism is proposed whereby naked PGEs in silicate melts coalesce to form clusters which are stabilised by surface attachment of sulphur atoms. This envelope acts to 'draw the cluster into sulphide melts. Small particle melting effects permit PGE clusters to remain as liquids at magmatic and smelter temperatures.

The demand for copper increases yearly, and further improvements in copper smelting efficiency using flash furnaces are required. This study was conducted to understand and promote the interfacial reaction associated with the collision of silica flux and iron oxide particles, ie the formation reaction of fayalite slag, in the reaction shaft of the flash furnace. High-temperature microscopy was used to observe the reaction behaviour of a 2 mm granular SiO2 reagent in contact with micrometreorder- sized FeO reagents in situ. When the amount of FeO was lower than the stoichiometric amount with SiO2, the molten slag formed at the interface between FeO and SiO2 diffused into the SiO2 particle before dissolving the remaining FeO particles. It did not contribute to the subsequent reaction, and despite having the lowest amount of FeO among the samples in this study, many unreacted FeO particles remained on the surface of the samples after testing. On the other hand, under conditions with high FeO content and close to the eutectic composition of the FeO-SiO2 system, a liquid phase formed from low temperatures, gradually increasing in volume and eventually completely dissolving the 2 mm SiO2 grain. These results indicate that the early-stage slag is essential in increasing the interfacial area between FeO and SiO2 and facilitating the supply of FeO to SiO2. In other words, the FeO/SiO2 determines the amount of liquid phase and significantly influences the subsequent interfacial reaction rate between FeO and SiO2. Therefore, the local FeO/SiO2 of the particles falling down the reaction shaft should also be optimised to ensure early slag formation. Meanwhile, the time required for 2 mm SiO2 to complete the reaction for the temperature history employed in this study was significantly longer than the particle residence time in the reaction shaft. Further detailed investigation of the effects of silica flux particle size, composition, and reaction temperature on the reaction time will help find the conditions under which the reaction of silica flux can be completed in the reaction shaft. These kinetic approaches could contribute to future innovations in the copper smelting process using flash furnaces.

Atlas Copco is a leading provider of industrial productivity solutions (Atlas Copco, 2007) and one of the worldÆs largest suppliers of rock drilling equipment. The business division of Atlas Copco Construction and Mining Technique is based in +rebro, Sweden with the majority of their equipment produced in a number of facilities within the area. As part of the 2006 AusIMM/Atlas Copco Scholarship I was fortunate enough to visit these facilities to experience first hand this truly unique global company. Through numerous presentations on the various divisions and products manufactured by the company, I saw the broad range of products and services offered by the company and came to realise it is much more than just selling drills. Other highlights included a brief love affair, a tour of EuropeÆs largest underground mine (or factory depending who you ask), a drink at the ice bar at the ice hotel in JukkasjSrvi, and a number of dinners of reindeer. Overall this it was a truly amazing experience with all involved with the program going out of their way to ensure I got the most out of the trip. More importantly, through no effort at all, everyone naturally conveyed their passion for the industry and the company which is a great credit to the æAtlas Copco WayÆ thereby creating a company æcommitted to your superior productivity through interaction and innovationÆ.

Water sprays on mining machines are generally put there to reduce dust; however, research by the Bureau of Mines and others has shown that considerable airflows may also be generated by these sprays. This recognition of water spray-gen- erated air movement led to the "Spray-Fan" - a continuous miner auxiliary ventilation system which was shown to reduce methane peaks by a factor of 15. Recent successes and failures of the Spray Fan are reviewed. More recently, the same principles were used in the design of the "Shearer- Clearer" for reducing dust at longwall shearer operators. The original design was successful; however, a new design is now available which is more practical to install and does a much better job of holding the dust against the face downwind of the shearer. The latest research objective is to eliminate the negative impact of spray- generated air turbulence on continuous miner dust control. Most coal faces in the USA are ventilated in the exhaust mode using "line curtain", and the forward airflow on the side of the heading opposite the curtain is inevitably weak. Air turbulence generated by sprays which are incorrectly located and/or operated at excessive pressures can cause roll back - in which the dust cloud at the face is forced unwind against the ventilation and spreads over the miner cnerator. The general approach to reducing "roll back." is reviewed and art anti-roll back water spray system is presented.

Consistent slag blow end point detection remains one of the challenges in the Peirce-Smith converters at Mount Isa MinesÆ Copper Smelter. Under blowing results in foaming on copper blow and carry forward of oxide skims to the anode furnace. Over blowing results in high copper losses to the slag. Both present safety issues and contribute to lower copper production. The end points of the slag making phases are assessed by inspection of a bar sample. A bar sample is a thin accretion layer that adheres to a steel bar when it is inserted into the tuyere while the converter is blowing. This method is biased and subjective, so there is heavy reliance on operator experience. The Semtech Optical Process Control (OPC) system was installed in early 2002 for converter slag blow end point detection. Initial plant trials did not improve all aspects of converter operations, and uptake by operators was poor, so the system was not used. In early 2005, the Semtech OPC system was re-visited and another short trial was conducted to evaluate the permanent use of the system for slag and copper blow end point detection. During this trial, the Semtech OPC method was found to be superior to bar sampling for slag blow end point detection. The implementation and refurbishment of the Semtech OPC system has resulted in plant improvements and given a better insight into converter operation during blowing. Oxide skim generation carried forward to the anode furnace has been shown to decrease with increasing compliance with Semtech OPC. Some of the expected improvements to converter operation were not found to be significant. Semtech OPC is now well received and utilised by converter operators. Individual paper available only. Computational techniques are needed to assist in the analysis and interpretation of the increasing amounts of geoscientific and mining related data and information that are routinely gathered at mine sites. New interpretation methods are needed to provide an integrated approach so as to establish relationships (cause and effect) or to be predictive about possible outcomes based on acquired data. Traditional multivariate statistical methods are often confused by variable relationships that are non-linear, data distributions that are non-normal, and by the data themselves that may contain missing values, text and both continuous and discontinuous numeric values. Modern data mining methods are available to understand the relationships within and between diverse data sets, and identify relationships or trends associated with processes, measurements and mine design parameters in mines. The self-organizing map (SOM) is a data mining approach with the advantage that all input data samples are represented as vectors in a data-space defined by the observations (variables). The SOM procedure is an exploratory analysis tool that highlights patterns and relationships. Results are internally derived, in an unsupervised fashion based on measures of vector similarity. Our SOM outputs are highly visual, which assists in understanding and illustrating the dataÆs structure and internal relationships. Two studies are presented. The first uses SOM to investigate the relationships between a range of measured and derived rock property parameters and their observed behaviours during mining. Our aim was to determine whether a SOM analysis would allow a better understanding of observed and predicted rock behaviours from their rock properties. The SOM analysis showed that there were indeed relationships between æbrittleÆ, æsugaryÆ, æslabbyÆ and æsqueezingÆ rock behaviours and a number of the input parameters. The computed SOM æstructureÆ was then used to assess the likely behaviour of unknown samples by assigning them into behavioural fields based on their measured and derived geotechnical responses. The second study was aimed at assessing whether a SOM analysis of microseismic data at the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MineÆs (KCGM) Mt Charlotte mine can contribute towards understanding and potentially forecasting/minimising seismicity at the mine-design stage. The database comprised 40 sample æclustersÆ of microseismic parameters from the MS-RAP software package, which were derived from 2500 individual seismic events. The SOM analysis showed that some of the initial mining conditions are related to the seismic parameters. In each of the studies, the SOM procedures assisted in understanding the data and provided new insights. Because of its æordered vector quantisationÆ foundation, the SOM procedure is a substantial improvement over traditional statistical methods in three main areas:its ability to analyse data from disparate sources, including different data types; its ability to analyse sparse data sets with missing values; and its ability to analyse and visualise non-linear relationships within a data set.

This paper presents a parametric analysis showing the impact of virgin in situ stresses on a shallow (less than 100 to 150 m) high slope in a jointed sedimentary rock environment. Slope stability is assessed at varying ratios of slope orientation and horizontal stresses. The results of this study indicate stress conditions should be included in stability assessments of excavated slopes, particularly where structure is orientated perpendicular to the direction of horizontal stress. Some consideration of stress state is applied in deep open cut pits (eg those with planned excavations of 400–1200 m) (Myrvang et al, 1993; Stacey et al, 2003; de Bruyn et al, 2014; Kozyrev et al, 2015). Dodd and Anderson (1972), Kalkani and Piteau (1976), Lee (1978), Coulthard et al (1992), Noorani et al (2011) have studied the effect or horizontal stress and its impact on slope stability, showing that tensile stresses tend to develop at the crest of the slope, with larger tensile zones for higher horizonal stresses and steeper slope angles (Stacey, 1970, 1973; Sjoberg, 2013). However, the consideration of virgin stresses on shallow slope stability is less frequent (Lynch et al, 2005; Dight, 2006; Lucas, 2006; Sjoberg, 2013). This has led many geotechnical engineers to believe the impact of virgin in situ stresses on open cut slope stability is minimal and not worth time or consideration in modelling, or their effects on slope stability are still poorly understood (Stacey et al, 2003; Sjoberg, 2013).

The South Deposit Tailings Storage Facility (SDTSF), located at Grange Resources Pty Ltd’s (Grange) Savage River mine in north west Tasmania, has recently begun construction. The facility will provide storage for approximately 37 million cubic metres of tailings, equating to approximately 20 years’ tailings storage.The SDTSF embankment will be constructed entirely out of waste rock won from mining operations, and will feature a flow-through drain constructed from alkaline, non-acid forming (NAF) waste rock. This provides Grange with an economical storage solution for waste management (both tailings and waste rock) and maximises available space on site. The outflows discharged through the alkaline rock ‘flow-through’ will provide a long-term source of alkalinity to Main Creek, subsequently feeding into Savage River. This will provide environmental benefits to the downstream ecology that has long been degraded due to the effects of legacy acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), caused by historical mining operations.CITATION:Longey, R, Brett, D and Simmons, A, 2015. This study focuses on the recovery of valuable metals, specifically silver (Ag) and palladium (Pd), from copper-containing sludge (with copper content less than 20 per cent) generated during PCB processing and from spent petrochemical catalysts used in vapour decomposition during oil refining processes. The present results indicate that an increase in the mixing ratio of alumina-based spent catalyst leads to a decrease in the recovery rate of Ag and Pd. The recovery rates for Ag and Pd range from 84 per cent to 96 per cent and 80 per cent to 98 per cent, respectively. This trend is attributed to the increased emulsification of copper droplets containing Ag and Pd in the slag. The emulsification is caused by the decrease in the settling velocity of the copper droplets due to the increased viscosity of the slag as well as by the decrease in the slag-metal interfacial tension due to an increase in sulfur content at higher mixing ratio of spent catalyst.

Safety bulletins and stickers issued for the paste backfill plant at Cannington read as follows: æCannington Paste Fill Plant, First of ItÆs Kind in AustraliaÆ. We could even dare to state that the Cannington plant is different than any other paste backfill plant in the world because of the overall design, plant equipment and underground delivery. However, one thing to be certain of is, the paste backfill plant works as designed and a pump is not required to deliver paste underground given the general plant arrangement at Cannington. The past two years have been a process of evolution to design and construct the plant and make it work. This paper will describe the paste process using full mill tails along with placement of cemented paste underground. Discussions will include rationale of fixed plant selection along with various control requirements. BHP World Minerals recently commissioned its paste backfill plant in December 1997. Cannington is placing full mill tails underground via two surface boreholes that deliver either to primary or secondary stopes.

The economic feasibility of controlled district cross-cut recirculation is examined in this paper with particular reference to the most important mine ventilation network parameters. An algorithm is developed to express the annual cost of recirculation which is then compared to the annual cost of conventional ventilation using the University of Queensland Experimental Mine as a case study. The concepts of resistance ratio and volumetric efficiency ratio are introduced and used to analyse the economic feasibility of controlled recirculation within a mine ventilation network.

There is a Chinese saying-may you live in interesting times. Certainly we do tod.a~our mining professions. We are, of course, totally dependent on a' healthy mining industry for the chance to practice our chosen professions, and for our Institute.Let us look at one of the more interesting facts. The mining industry now accounts for some 50 per cent of Australia's exports.This massive earning of foreign exchange is the key to keeping our increasing overseas debt in check. Furthermore, mineral production..including petroleum, saves us a large amount of foreign currency by providing essential minerals, including energy minerals, for local consumption.With such fundamental inputs to our economy, any primary school student, any child in fact, should be able to see that the mining industry and mining professions are very important to our nation. Yet the average citizen is unaware of this simple fact as they enjoy their high standard'of living and think that we are still living in the lucky country.Therefore, it is most interesting to me that the average citizen, and most of our politicians, seem to hold mining and miners in low esteem. I use the term miners to describe all those important people, like us, who work in the mining professions, and are employed by, or are dependent on, the mining industry.So why are we miners in this paradoxical situation of doing wonderful works, being the backbone of the country, and yet being held in low regard by the very community we underwrite.Truly-it is interesting-or did the Chinese mean intriguing?It is indeed paradoxical that we are the rare people who open up the land, borrow small parts of it for a relatively short time to harvest the mineral crops, then return it to the community for other uses; and when we return the land back to the community at large it should be in better shape than when we started. There will be infrastructure - roads, airstrips, supplies of water and power, parks and housing-all left behind after mining.These benefits to the community are ignored while our critics focus on the small scars on the landscape which sometimes cannot be healed at reasonable cost; and yet, if we allow time, nature usually heals the small scars anyway. Look at New Zealand, particularly the Coromandel Peninsula which was intensively mined and logged; now it is covered with secondary growth and stark pine plantations. Remember that mining scars are infinitesimally small when compared to urban sprawl or clearing of land for farming and grazing, or highways, or the area of most national parks.Thus, miners are important citizens economically, and we are the majority of the few who actually practice the principles of multiple land use.What are the consequences of our image? They are serious in that the poor image we seem to project, discourages many people from becoming involved in, or supportive of, our industry. This brings me to my theme for the year: Students, Education and Communication - the Key to our Future.

The South Island Line (East) will be a medium-capacity railway covering approximately 7 km from Admiralty Station to South Horizons Station on the south side of Aberdeen Harbour in Hong Kong, with intermediate stations at Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang and Lei Tung.South Island Line (East) Contract 904 project is located on the island of Ap Lei Chau at the southern side of Hong Kong island and requires extensive construction works to be completed in close proximity to the existing residential estates of South Horizons and Lei Tung. The project also has areas of significant cultural heritage, including 18th and 19th century temples and historical gravesites. Owing to the site access constraints and location for the project, detailed planning and methodology innovations have been required to ensure the most effective and responsible means of delivering the project works. To excavate the tunnels using drill-and-blast techniques in these restricted locations, the maximum instantaneous charge weight that could be fired while blasting was severely limited. To overcome these restrictions, the project team developed and pioneered the use of ‘deck loading’ in Hong Kong to minimise the impact of blasting operations and has successfully implemented double- and triple-deck blasting operations during the completion of tunnel excavation works.Upon completion of the drill-and-blast excavation, the tunnel lining works were completed using both in situ concrete lining with travelling forms and permanent shotcrete works.CITATION:Curlewis, W, Cuthbert, Z and Hake, D, 2014. A trend towards mining more complex and economically marginal orebodies, often combined with increasingly tight product specifications, increases the number of variables which need to be considered in production scheduling. Linear programming incorporating integer constraints can be used to create production schedules which are practical as well as mathematically optimum. Factors which can be taken into account include variability in product stockpiles, targets for head or product grades, production of different material types, production from different areas, production targets for loaders, and dependencies between mining blocks. For each schedule an appropriate objective for optimisation must be chosen. Examples of objectives are: to minimise or maximise grade variation; to minimise waste movement; and to minimise movement by front end loaders. A staged approach to the implementation of computer systems based on linear programming optimisation is Proposed.

Kakogawa Works, Kobe Steel, Ltd. has two pelletizing plants and one sintering plant, and the blast furnaces have been operated with 30 - 50% pellets. At Kakogawa Works, various improvements in pellet quality have been carried out since the beginning of operation of the pelletizing plant. Especially, dolomite-fluxed pellets developed in 1975, have superior high temperature properties. The fuel rate of the large blast furnaces at Kakogawa Works has been reduced to 450 kg/t- hn by using a high percentage of dolomite-flux ed pellets.

The Lochiel Deposit is a large occurrence of soft brown coal about 130 km north of Adelaide. The deposit is undergoing continued evalua- tion of which an integral part was the excavation of a Trial Pit. The Trial Pit was deemed necessary to demonstrate that the deposit may be mined efficiently by draglines and the particular emphasis was on the geotech- nical and hydrogeological aspects of what may be termed difficult mining conditions. The dewatering of the Trial Pit was commenced in September 1986. After considerable planning and excavation was successfully completed in May 1987. The project is unique in terms of its size and technical com- plexity. It entailed excavation of over 230,000 m3 of overburden to an overall depth of 36 metres. The excavated material was utilised for experimentation in a Trial Dump. Included in the Trial Pit design were several novel techniques includ- ing depressurisation drains to improve mining conditions in soil strength materials and the use of vacuum to aid dewatering.

The Gympie Goldfield was the sixth largest producer of gold in historic terms in Australia. The Joint Venture Agreement between BHP Gold Mines Limited and Devex Limited was signed in January 1987. Since that time, some $20 million have been spent on underground and surface exploration work in the southern portion of the goldfield. The project is of considerable interest as the dewatering, rehabilitation and equipping of an old rectangular timber-lined shaft has been undertaken. The project is located in Gympie, a city of 10,000 people. The issues of dealing with urbanisation and associated environmental aspects are vital to the success of the project. An outline of the project and the geology of the mineralised structures follows:

The M2 Upgrade Project involved widening 15 km of the existing M2 Motorway, which is a key route in Sydney’s road network. The Norfolk Twin Tunnels in North Epping convey traffic over a 460 m length of the motorway. The project involved widening the twin tunnels to provide a third lane and breakdown lane in each direction.The widening of the tunnels was fundamentally different to other ‘greenfield’ tunnel projects in that the operation of the tunnel was maintained throughout construction, with motorway traffic permitted close to the excavation faces on a daily basis. The widened works had to integrate with the existing tunnel support, construction details, and mechanical and electrical infrastructure.The existing tunnel afforded the opportunity to review existing ground conditions in the tunnel. Exposures were mapped within the tunnel, and key design parameters were back-analysed from the original monitoring data to provide increased confidence in the assessed impact from the widening works.Traffic capacity of the tunnels was maintained by detailed staging of the works, and included the ability to reopen the tunnels at short notice.A permit to tunnel system was developed to manage the risks associated with re-opening the tunnel to traffic. A comprehensive suite of instrumentation was maintained to provide reliable monitoring data to support this process. Emphasis on the robustness and reliability of tunnel instrumentation provided increased confidence in the adequacy of the tunnel support being installed. The monitoring was routinely compared with design predictions to check the adequacy of the support measures being installed and confirm the design.The approaches and methodologies developed for the widening of the Norfolk Tunnels were effective in maintaining the safe operation of the tunnels throughout the two years of construction, and provide a framework for increasing the capacity of existing tunnel infrastructure in the future.CITATION:Clarke, S J, de Ambrosis, A L, Bertuzzi, R and Redelinghuys, J, 2014. Coal is a vital energy source and source of carbon for metallurgical applications, contributing significantly to the world economy. Coal mining and processing involve multiple processes that generate Respirable Coal Mine Dust (RCMD), one of the primary sources of health hazards for coal workers. Since 2000, the rate of Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP) has continually increased in the U.S, with severity of the cases also worsening. Increasing evidence shows that exposure to RCMD in coal workers is a high-risk factor for lung cancer, which causes more deaths than the following three major cancers combined in the US Recent observations show an increased incidenceof CWP or other lung diseases, particularly among young miners in the Appalachian basin. The CWP prevalence in Appalachia is four times higher than the national average. Although various regulations are in place, the resurgence of such disease among coalminers demands additional efforts to better understand all the possible facets of coal dust toxicity, taking insights from current interdisciplinaryresearch efforts. One such important field is the interaction of coal dust with moisture in underground mines. Although moisture is prevalent and dynamic in an underground mining environment, it has never been evaluated for its impact on modifying the toxicity of coal dust and transport or flow behaviour. However, research conducted in atmospheric sciences in the past decade makes it clear that moisture in the atmosphere can significantly alter the behaviour of mineral dust. This paper is a part of research aimed at understanding how moisture interacts and alters the characteristics of coal dust. Such insight is crucial in understanding the potential toxicity of coal dust and developing mitigation technologies.
