Grade Engineering® is a value-driven strategy aiming to maximise benefits by exploiting intrinsic grade variability of ore deposits. It utilises a multitude of separation techniques to remove low grade material before being introduced to post-blast size reduction processes, i.e. crushing and grinding. At an operational scale, Grade Engineering® techniques can be implemented at the drill-and-blast stage, to control the degree of fragmentation in accordance with the spatial distribution of valuable minerals across an ore domain through differential blasting. It can also exploit intrinsic textural and breakage characteristics of a given ore type to reject uneconomical barren material at coarse sizes, which is known as Natural Deportment. Grade Engineering® can also be employed in the deliver stage of the mining value chain through sensor-based bulk and particle sorting. Each strategy is therefore highly dependent on the responsiveness of an orebody to available techniques. That is, the extent to which Grade Engineering® drivers would be capable of unlocking potential values of currently un-amenable orebodies depends on how detailed the heterogeneous nature of ore domains can be described. This paper considers exploring possible linkages between deportment characteristics of an ore and its competence when broken in a range of energy inputs at a particlebased level. Accordingly, potential opportunity may lie in exploring whether the intensity of input energy (or degree of fineness) can be used as a lever to improve or ‘unlock’ ore amenability to Grade Engineering® techniques. Implications from such a detailed approach offers new opportunities to enhance Grade Engineering® gains through engineering ore competence variability.

The continuously growing demand for rare earth elements (REEs), in combination with the crisis of 2009 and the price spike of 2011, has initiated a treasure hunt for rare earth deposits all over the world in recent years. Since then, commodity prices have declined and are now quite stable, yet the world is still dependent on China’s dominance of the market and its export policies. Exploration is unremitting and numerous resources of potential interest have already been revealed in many countries; however, proceeding to mining operations is not that simple, especially when it comes to the exploitation of rare earth deposits. Evaluating the feasibility of a mining project is always a unique, sensitive and rather complex process that depends on multiple criteria.This paper focuses on clarifying the present and future global situation in the development of respective deposits and on identifying rare earth-specific criteria that influence the overall feasibility assessments of any potential (especially underground) mining projects. Environmental impacts, legislation issues and the presence of radioactive pollutants are some of the notable boundary conditions that govern rare earth mining operations and need to be taken into consideration. Furthermore, the balance problem between the supply and demand of the different REEs can determine decisively whether a deposit of specific REEs is economically exploitable. For this reason, evaluations are made regarding the future strategies to be enacted in order for the rest of the world to detach itself from this situation. Miners and mineral explorers are concerned at the increasingly hostile environment being generated towards their industry and their profession. There is little official or public recognition that the mining industry is essential for the maintenance of the country's standard of living; a large part of this hostile feeling is caused by the assumption that mining destroys large tracts of our attractive countryside. This paper presents a historic review of the impact on the countryside of the major land using groups commencing with the Polynesian migration. European farming practices, subsequent expansion of the urban dweller and the land management practices of the two Government Departments, Lands and Survey and New Zealand Forest Service who between them control half of the total land area, are discussed. Estimates of total land area to date, directly and indirectly affected by mining have been calculated and a broad estimate of 18 000 ha or 1/1500 of total land area is indicated; current annual mineral production requires some 240 ha. These gross areas take no account of subsequent land rehabilitation, its improvement upon the original in some cases and the recreational, historic and aesthetic areas gained. Comparisons are then drawn with some current land practices in New Zealand.

A mine project combines vast amounts of information from various disciplines including but not limited to geology, mining, metallurgy, technology, environment and economics. In many cases, all relevant information is not fully shared between all disciplines. Thus, project performance (technical, economical and sustainability) may be evaluated on basis of insufficient information resulting in non-optimal decisions, project execution and risk management. Advances in computing power and simulation software enable various data sets to be incorporated in a single digital platform enabling more efficient and transparent data sharing. In addition, linked data sets and simulation can support assessment and optimization of the project as a whole rather than focusing on optimization of individual events. The reasons for selecting two stage pebble milling in preference to conventional methods of grinding are discussed. Commissioning of the first section was completed in October, 1969. Improvements in both the operating and engineering aspects were then incorporated in the section commiss ioned in March, 1971.

This paper presents an overview of a program PC-BC developed for application to the design and evaluation of block cave operations. Conventional mine planning software tools are not well suited to the evaluation of this type of deposit. The paper looks at the modelling approach as applied to a block cave mining project. The following steps are described:Initial preparation of data including block models, draw point footprint geometry and draw cone geometry. Computation of individual draw point reserves. Procedure for modelling of vertical mixing of material within each draw point and subsequent determination of the best height of draw for each draw point based upon an economic cut-off value. Smoothing of draw heights amongst neighbouring draw points to produce a realistic draw envelope. Mineable reserves within the envelope are then computed. Tools for preparation and evaluation of various production schedules. This includes definition of draw rates, and rates for commissioning new draw points. In an operating mine, the capture and analysis of daily draw tonnages is important. How PC-BC accommodates this is described as well as the processes for depleting the draw column reserves. In the 12 years since the program was first developed, it has been used on a number of projects for feasibility studies and operating mines. Some practical examples of the use of the program in these projects are presented. Finally, some commentary on the sensitivity of various parameters is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the overall footprint design.

The extraction and transport of coal from underground coal mines can result in significant liberation of coal and/or silica dust into the mine atmosphere. Mine operators have long used ventilating air as a primary means of diluting generated dust, removing dust from the working faces and preventing dust from reaching the minersÆ working environment. As production levels have increased, mine operators continue to be challenged in maintaining dust concentrations below compliance levels. The need for maximising the effectiveness of available ventilating air in conjunction with other effective controls, such as water sprays and dust collectors, continues to be critical to the long-term health of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale laboratory and mine-site research to evaluate improved application of dust controls for both longwall and continuous mining methods. A summary of recent research results and recommended practices will be provided.

A comprehensive analysisof rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging, interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcorc is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure.

The New Zealand rail authority, Kiwi Rail and Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA), are jointly planning a new mainline rail link between Auckland’s downtown Britomart Station and the existing Western Line at Mt Eden. In 2009, APB&B, a consortia of Aecom, Beca, Parsons Brinkerhoff and Hassell Architects where commissioned to develop the conceptual design, Assessment of Environmental Effects (AEE) and business case for the new 3 km rail line towards preparing a Notice of Requirement to protect the route through Auckland’s central business district.This paper describes the engineering challenges in the development of the conceptual design for the three proposed underground stations, the running tunnels and connections to the existing network. Feasible alignment and station location options were developed and evaluated using multi-criteria analysis based on key client functional requirements, constraint mapping and environmental impacts. The resulting preferred scheme was then developed to a conceptual design suffi cient for assessment of environmental effects, risks, and the development of a robust construction methodology to allow high level capital cost estimates.The paper describes some of the major challenges overcome to develop the concept, including steep gradients, narrow street envelopes with existing buildings and structures, the need for large platform spaces with low ECBF rock cover and complex connections at Britomart and the main line near Mt Eden.The development of the conceptual design of the underground stations in particular demonstrates the need for a holistic value engineering approach to satisfying the architectural and functional requirements, in a highly constrained dense urban environment and at lowest practical cost. The construction methodology was a key input to the conceptual design development throughout.The conceptual design will be used as the fundamental basis for the development of the AEE and business case for the project in the future.

The Black Star and Racecourse orebodies below 15 level contain a major portion of the primary silver-lead-zinc ore reserves of 56 million tonnes at 150 g/t Ag, 6.4% Pb and 6.5% Zn at Isa Mine. Extraction from this area is scheduled to begin in the early 1980's. Mining in this block will be quite com- plicated as the ore is contained in a dozen separate orebodies varying in width from 3 m to 20 m with only narrow barren pillars between them in some cases. Mining objectives which consider metal recovery, costs, environmental and safety factors, operating requirements and rock mechanics are used to compare proposals. The planning work involved in formulating mining proposals considers disposition of reserves, scheduling factors, sequence of extraction, extraction methods, haulage set-up and ventilation requirements.

The Grootegeluk coal beneficiation plant is situated near Ellisras in the Waterberg coal= field in the Transvaal, RSA. At this plant 15 million tons of coal bearing material per annum are beneficiated by means of two-stage heavy medium bath and cyclone plants. Because of the very low yield of 12 % coking coal product, run= ping costs are of the - utmost importance. For this reason extensive tests were carried out to establish the most effective crushing and bene= ficiation methods and suitable aquipment. At the second heavy medium separation stage, the near-gravity material (+ 0,1. g/cc) amounts to 45 % and daily plant performance ana=lysis is required to ensure acceptable plant efficiency. Beneficiation processes for the -0,5 mm coal originally considered were froth flotation, shaking tables, heavy medium cyclones and water- only cyclones. When the froth flotation route was decided upon, further test work was done to enable selection of the equipment most suitable for the particular requirements.

Responsibility for the administration of mineral resources is divided between federal and provincial governments. The paper traces the evolution of mineral policies at both levels of government, from the end of World War II to the present. In the immediate post-World War II years, the emphasis was on supplying the raw material needs of a rapidly growing world economy. Policies favouring growth and development of the Canadian mining industry were instituted during this period. Two decades of uninterrupted expansion (the 1950s and 1960s) ensued. The decade of the 1970s was a turbulent one for Canadian mineral producers. Governments intervened more substantially than ever before. Moreover, the industry suffered from an intense period of competition for resource revenues by the two levels of government. At the same time, far reaching changes were taking place in the structure of world mineral markets. To date in the 1980s, the mineral industry has, perforce, adapted to existing mineral market structures. Mineral policies, too, have shown signs of adapting to the needs of the mineral industry. Whether the resulting mix of policies will permit the revitalization of the Canadian mining sector remains to be seen.

Pillar extraction carried out using various methods (split and lift, Wongawilli and Old Ben) involves the formation of narrow fenders (commonly 7 m of coal) formed by driving "splits" for lifting off with a continuous miner. The strata above a split and fender adjacent to the goaf consists of a cantilever beam (usually >3 m thick) that extends from the solid coal and bridges across the fender. Lifting off the fender from the split in safe conditions depends upon the bridging capability of the cantilever and the fender strength. The nature and competence of the immediate and near roof, the support capability of the coal fender and the presence of faults and or joints can adversely affect the bridging behaviour of the cantilever. Insufficient knowledge of these parameters can lead to extraction under dangerous conditions. Remnants of fenders ("stooks") also support the cantilever and their dimensions are critical to obtain regular caving and goaf falls. Stook area, goaf roof span and roof stand-up time after lifting can be related and only a relatively small increase in stook area of 10-15 m2 can lead to a significantly increased stand-up time, especially under a massive roof. Such conditions strongly influence the re- distribution of abutment stresses and can create increased outbye pillar loading. Based on detailed underground geotechnical investigations, it is concluded that strata caveability, roof cantilever behaviour, fender H:W ratio and remnant stook size are all critical parameters for successful and safe pillar extraction.

Several technical and economic factors have to be taken into consideration in developing an optimal mining method. This paper describes some of the important factors learnt during the evolution of the sublevel cave mining method at Trojan Nickel Mine, part of the Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) in Zimbabwe. Sublevel caving (SLC) has been successfully implemented at Trojan mine since its introduction in 1994. The method has evolved over the past six years into a system that has brought about improvements in efficiencies and productivity. Although the original design parameters used were sound and provided a solid foundation for the system, they needed to be optimised to get the best out of the mining method. Improvements and changes have been made in areas such as the drilling process, charging and blasting techniques, ring pattern design, development size and shape, and the draw control system. This has enabled the mine to develop an SLC operation that is efficient and innovative. Experience gained, together with the theory available has given us a much better understanding of the system. This knowledge will be used in the future to enhance the system further. Given the low grades of the BNC Mines, management recognises that only through technical excellence and efficient mining can the mines reduce mining costs and maintain profitability and competitiveness on the world market. In the Zimbabwe mining industry reaction to technological change, mechanisation and advancement have been relatively slow, due to isolation and economic constraints, compared to the rest of the world. Economic difficulties prevail, with high inflation levels, a poor exchange rate, lack of foreign currency and other associated problems. Despite these constraints, the bold steps taken have transformed Trojan mine into a more efficient and competitive operation, presenting itself as the leading mine in the BNC group. Appendices give data to illustrate the benefits obtained.

Mobile robots have been making impressive inroads in a variety of domains. Within the Mining-RoX project, Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg is exploring a further frontier for mobile and autonomous robots: underground mines. The potential benefits of mobile robots in underground mining are plentiful as underground mines are strenuous and potentially dangerous working environments for humans. A higher degree of automation, with robots either acting as helpers for human miners or even replacing all human personnel deployed underground, could help to significantly reduce mining costs. In disaster cases, rescue robots could help to find missing personnel. Unmanned mines operated by robots alone would not endanger human lives at all. Further use cases, and a particular focus of the Mining-RoX project, are mobile robots that gather sensory information of the underground mine (eg for the purpose of creating detailed 2D and 3D maps) as well as monitoring environmental conditions such as air and water quality. This paper presents the design of a prototypical mobile robot for mapping and monitoring underground mines. A generic robotic platform was extended with various 2D and 3D imaging devices as well as other sensors. First results from test runs in an underground mine are reported. Ashton Mining Limited is currently one of the active companies undertaking gold exploration in Indonesia. Presently 7 Contract of Work areas are being explored for hard rock and alluvial gold. Hard rock exploration is focussed on the Tertiary volcanic arc terrains in which a variety of epithermal mineralisation styles have been identified. At the regional stage remote sensing techniques using Landsat, Spot and SLAR imagery where available, and photogeological studies are carried out in parallel with regional reconnaissance fieldwork programmes. These involve geological mapping and geochemical drainage sampling. Remote sensing techniques have proven useful in both the extrapolation of known geology and the identification of tectonically favourable settings as controls to mineralisation and volcanicity. The variety of mineralisation styles and settings is reflected in the highly variable geochemical signatures encountered. This has necessitated the refinement of sampling methods and sample preparation techniques for pan concentrate, stream sediment and soil samples in specific project areas. At the detailed prospect stage, mapping with particular attention to structural controls, wallrock alteration assemblages identified by petrog- raphy and XRD clay mineralogy, have proved useful in focussing drill targets. Drilling to date has utilised conventional diamond core drilling methods, the use of lightweight, man-portable "Winkie"-type rigs and hammer auger bedrock sampling systems. Geophysics methods successfully employed on various projects have included airborne magnetics and radiometrics, detailed ground magnetic surveys, VLF-EM and SIROTEM.

This work was instituted to investigate the microscopic structure of brown coals by means of microtome sections cut from them. It was found to be essential to impregnate the coal with some material prior to cutting, because of its powdery and crumbly nature. Of a number of impregnating materials tried, e.g., glycerine gum, gelatine, by far the most satisfactory was paraffin wax. Samples of brown coals for section cutting must be moist. When obtained, they should be put immediately into air-tight tins, and, if they are not to be used for some time, it is desirable to keep them under water containing a small amount of formalin. If the sample is allowed to dry in air, it becomes too hard to be cut. It cannot be softened again even by prolonged soaking in water.PREPARATION OF COALSmall rectangular, blocks were cut from the sample with a chisel and a strong scalpel. The largest block prepared was 3·2 x 2·5 x 0·6 cm. The faces of the block from which sections were to be cut were approximately levelled before treatment. The block was then painted carefully on all sides with two coats of warm aqueous agar, approximately 2 %. This prevented crumbling and breakage of the block during treatment. When the agar was set, the block was placed in water, and all the air removed with a vacuum pump. The water was replaced first by alcohol, then by chloroform, by the usual step transference of a series of liquids, in each of which the block was placed for 24 hours: Ethanol %, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 85, 95, 100 (three changes); Ethanol-chloroform, 3: 1, 1: 1, 1 : 3, chloroform pure (three changes) '. Since 1958 there have been 16 major coal mine explosions in the U.S. claiming 323 lives. Whilst the exact cause of a number of these incidents has not been determined, the majority has involved gas ignitions in one way or another. In addition there have been fatal gas explosions in salt mines and vapor explosions in oil mines. Furthermore, many of the oil shale mines in the U.S. have proven to be gassy giving cause for concern. Compounding these problems is the fact that frictional ignition of methane in coal mines has dramatically increased over the past several years; over 100 such ignitions were reported in 1979. While, no fatalities have been attributed to frictional ignition in the U.S. since early 1978, a recent mine explosion in Nova Scotia which resulted in 11 fatalities was attributed to a frictional face ignition. Research being conducted at the Bureau of Mines is aimed at the prevention and suppression of gas explosions. Emphasis is placed on new coal cutter bits for reducing ignition frequency, machine-mounted water sprays for preventing frictional face ignitions and automatic devices for quenching incipient ignitions and fully developed gas explosions.

Mining and tunnelling share many commonalities (eg confined working environments, excavation equipment and processes), but of significance is an overarching commitment to provide safe work conditions and environments. This includes reducing exposure to hazardous airborne contaminants such as dust and fumes, in particular Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) and Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM), with methods that are environmentally sustainable. In mining, wet methods are common to suppress airborne contaminants, however these methods are reliant on water availability, can be less effective for respirable dust, can have implications for environmental water contamination and can increase maintenance on mining equipment. In contrast, the use of dust scrubbers that provide filtration of airborne contaminants are well established in the tunnelling industry and frequently used to provide spot extraction (dust control at the source) and act often as a complement to the main ventilation system. This paper sought to learn more about the advancements in tunnelling that could be readily applied to mining to improve health outcomes. The paper includes a review of literature and legislation related to health and sustainability and interviews with three respected, and experienced managers from the global tunnel construction industry. It is from these interviews that the focus of the paper turns to Sydney’s WestConnex underground tunnel network and the success of stage 3A M4-M5 construction link. The findings position dust scrubbers as integral to the overall project success as they enabled a Tunnel Production Line (TPL), where multiple stages of construction could take place simultaneously by controlling high volumes of dust at the source. The findings also suggest efficiencies of using mobile scrubbers, both track mounted and hydraulic stepping systems, to accompany road headers and other equipment throughout the excavation process. The findings have transferable applications to underground mining processes in which workers are exposed to high volumes of dust (eg drill and blast) or situations in which dust control at the source, mobility and flexibility offer value (eg room and pillar mining).

A case study of migration of a paper factory fluid wastes, on the distance of 5 km from an underground disposal site to an ore mine is presented. The ore mine in question, situated in SW Poland is pumping 3.5 m3/s (ca 300 000 m3/day) of groundwater, producing a cone of depression about 150 m deep and several kilometers wide. The migration of wastes (pollutant) occurs within the carbonate karstic aquifer of Triassic age. The aquifer is about 100m thick and is characterized by the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity equal to 8 m/day on the average. The results of systematic measurements carried out for 13 years enabled to estimate the mean breakthrough curve of the pollutant. On this basis and taking into account the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity as well as the mean hydraulic gradient between the disposal site and the ore mine, the migration parameters of the polluting material, i.e. the real flow velocity, the effective porosity and the longitudinal disper- sivity have been calculated. As the measurements considered a long migration distance of the pollutant, the obtained hydrodynamic dispersion constant (dispersivity), in the authors opinion, is reliable enough to be applied for regional groundwater calculations, regardless of the "scale effect".
