To accommodate the fast growing need for services in Singapore’s Marina Bay downtown area, Marina South, the construction of a common services tunnel (CST) was required. The CST includes various services such as telecom cables, power lines and water pipes. A deep excavation and temporary earth retaining system (TERS) was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnels. Marina Bay is reclaimed land over thick soft marine clay which is likely to be still consolidating. The deep soft marine clay poses a big challenge for deep excavations in downtown areas where highways and sensitive structures are close by. This paper presents a case study of part of the CST Phase 1B and 2 at Marina South, in particular a 26 m deep excavation supported by a 46 m diameter temporary caisson. The construction started in late 2006 and the basic structure was completed in early 2011. The caisson was formed by 1.0 m thick overlapping diaphragm wall panels with a capping beam and three ring beams at different depths. Two-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to predict the ground settlement, lateral displacement, bending moment and hoop stresses in the diaphragm wall and ring beams during different excavation stages. A comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring scheme was established to verify the design predictions, control excavation safety and trigger the contingency plan to protect public safety. The impact of construction activity, unbalanced temporary stockpiles and adjacent deep excavation for a mole removal will be discussed.CITATION:Zhang, H and Lawrence, A, 2014. Material transport plays a significant role in the efficiency of horizontal grinding mills - autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG)/ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a greenfield milling operation at Mirabela MineratpoÆs SantaRita Nickel operation located in north eastern Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 Mt/a (575 t/h) to produce a P80 of 125 ¦m with ten to 12 per cent ball charge in the SAG mill. However, it has been operating as an ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity was achieved in few days and was gradually increased to an average of +800 t/h, still operating in ABC mode. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30 ft + 15.4 ft 8.5 MW SAG mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPLÖ) in closed circuit with a HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20 ft + 28.4 ft 5.5 MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with a Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 + 26 in CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimisation and future development works. The U.S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines has the opportunity to visit many U.S. mines, including some that claim 2 to 5 times the national average of 334 raw tonnes/unit shift (tps) from a continuous miner section. In a project to assess the reasons for this high production, the Bureau conducted two studies. The first study focused on the 25 highest producing continuous miner sections. What stood out during the visits-was the quality of the labor-management relations. In each of the mines there was a positive labor/management relationship based on mutual trust and a sense that the employees were the company's most valuable resource. Discussions with labor revealed a universally positive attitude toward the company. Interviews with the mine superintendents invariably ranked the quality and attitude of workers as more important than anything else. Also during the mine visits of the 25- mine study, no engineering factors obviously stood out. Time at the face was greater than average, most were in coal over 1.52 m and the roof was generally good. Also, none of the 25 mines had to contend with high methane levels. Because this study found that a high percentage of mines were in seams less than 1.52 m thick, the second study examined thin seam mines only.

Determination of the mineralogical location (deportment) of minor and trace elements (including credit and penalty elements) in base metal concentrates can indicate whether further processing is likely to (a) reduce the levels of the penalty elements, and/or (b) direct selected elements into other plant products, thereby increasing current concentrate grade or increasing payment for credit elements. To determine the deportment of elements requires knowledge of the proportions of the minerals present and their individual element contents. In addition, knowledge of the liberation and locking is important, as this can affect any possible further processing. Mineral proportions can be determined by a variety of methods including chemical analysis, point-counting, area-counting, QEM*SEM, image analysis and mineral separation. In the case of a Broken Hill zinc concentrate, several of these methods were used and gave consistent results.

A comparison was made between chemical analysis and ocular mineral/rock classification in health-based risk assessment of historical mine waste produced between 1625 and 1975. Large parts of the mine waste are heavily weathered and secondary minerals are abundant. The field was divided into several areas from where composite samples were collected. Seventy-five mine waste samples were selected for chemical analysis (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) and ocular mineral/rock classification (silicate, mica, granite/pegmatite, carbonate, iron oxide ore, sulfide ore, distribution between chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite). The waste has been produced in conjunction with mining a complex sulfidic ore with increasing iron oxide content (mainly magnetite) towards the northern part of the field. Elevated concentrations were found for Cd (average 26 mg/kg dw), Cu (average 3500 mg/kg dw), Pb (average 4100 mg/kg dw) and Zn (average 11 000 mg/kg dw). Large differences between average and median values indicated that the data was not normally distributed, ie the metals occur as discrete minerals (eg chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite). The ocular classification indicated low carbonate content, chalcopyrite dominating over sphalerite and galena in most samples and an even distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite. Both analytical and ocular mineral/rock classification data were combined into a common matrix that was evaluated using multivariate statistics. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed, for instance, that chromium and vanadium were mostly associated with harder minerals and rocks. PCA also indicated that a similar graphical picture could be obtained for chemical data and ocular mineral/rock classification data, respectively. The comparison indicates that ocular mineral/rock classification can replace or at least reduce the numbers of chemical analysis in health- based risk assessment of historical mine waste.

The Telégrafo copper – gold deposit is located in the Centinela district of the Antofagasta region in northern Chile. Telégrafo is a porphyry copper deposit of Eocene – Oligocene age which has a total mineral resource in measured, indicated and inferred categories equal to 2.6 billion tonnes with an average grade of 0.38 per cent copper.Currently the project is in the prefeasibility study phase, including an infill drilling campaign to improve the knowledge of the deposit that should result in an improvement of the mineral resource classification. In this context was decided to review the classification criteria in order to optimise the drill hole density necessary to support the project.This paper presents an application of conditional simulation to evaluate the risk related to drill hole spacing, using a geostatistical approach that mimics the process of evaluation of resources from the perspective of geological modelling and grade estimation. The first step of the approach is the generation of conditional simulations using the available samples to generate several plausible scenarios of the deposit in terms of copper grades and geological units. These scenarios are considered as the unknown reality of the deposit and sampled by synthetic drill holes in order to replicate the geological model process and copper resource estimation. In this way it is possible to establish differences between the possible scenarios and the generated resource estimation models for several simulated drill hole spacing alternatives. These differences or errors can then be quantified in terms of estimated mean, metal content and tonnage over different production volumes.The resulting errors were useful in assisting the decision making process related to the design of drill hole spacing for each category of mineral resource in the Telégrafo project, and to redistribute the budget associated to the drill campaigns for the next stage of the project.

Philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist.The minerals industry requires specific technical expertise in mining and mineral process engineering, geoscience, environmental science and social sciences to maintain and operate its current business and to develop future projects. A steady supply of new graduates is essential to replace not only retirees, but also those who left the industry during the recent downturn. The supply of trained graduates is however not instantaneous, and there is a four-year lag from entry into university to graduation. It is essential that this lag in human resource supply and a likely shortage of knowledgeable, qualified talent is taken into account when considering risks to the business of mining. The shortage of skilled professionals has in the past resulted in unsustainable salary expectations and is likely to pose financial and execution risk to new projects. This paper will review some recent statistics of students in training from around the world and explore what action is required to not only sustain the training courses that provide future ready talent to the mining industry, but also ensure that graduates from these courses are equipped to create change and be leaders in the industry. The future prosperity of the industry is dependent on delivering sustainable stakeholder returns through the cycle. This will be achieved by developing capable individuals that can respond to the complex, adaptive challenges facing the industry.*This is an abstract only. The scope of this report is to examine the aforementioned hypothesis by performing a detailed analytical comparison of a P&H electric rope shovel to an O&K diesel powered hydraulic excavator. In order to complement the integrity of the concluding results, two different size categories will be analysed in order to demonstrate that the findings can be extrapolated and applied to all the machinesÆ size classes. These two size classes are categorised by their bucket sizes and they are in the range of 43 - 58 cubic metres and 23 - 26 cubic metres. It should be noted that electric powered hydraulic excavators will not be considered in this report. In order to compare the electric and hydraulic types, the machine variants that will be analysed are commercial cost-effectiveness and operational flexibility. Although operational flexibility can be an ambiguous characteristic, a clear and thorough definition describing its exact meaning has been included. In order to simplify this study, all the data collected for this comparison have been for overburden removal, eliminating the variation that occurs with the movements of the shovel when selectively mining in the ore deposit. Thus, it ensures that all the data that is compared stems from a common origin for all the shovels. In other words the information will be compared when digging in the same material, loading into the same sized haul trucks, and when possible, with the same operators. Theoretical data received form the respective manufacturers, and actual data obtained from Mount Whaleback, was used for this comparison. This leads to the final comparison, where the operational flexibility and the cost-effectiveness are evaluated, with respect to their individual importance, ultimately influencing the final recommendation.

Properly designed evapotranspirative (ET) cover systems can greatly reduce the amount of infiltration and groundwater recharge (deep percolation) into potential acid generating mine waste. In arid and semi-arid environments, infrequent precipitation, low measurable subsurface fluxes, spatial variability within mine waste and cover material, and evapotranspiration from below the cover system create challenges to monitoring moisture flux in these systems. Sloped ET single-layer (monolayer) cover depths and a variety of reclamation treatments are being studied at a copper tailing impoundment in Arizona, USA. To monitor the performance of different ET cover systems in response to precipitation patterns, four different test plots consisting of two different cover depths and two different vegetation densities were instrumented with heat dissipation sensor nests. The sensors measure the soil water pressure potential and allow hydraulic gradients to be determined within and below the cover systems to depths of 180 cm. Three replicate sensor nests were installed in each test plot to account for variability in materials and test plot treatments. Data collection occurs twice daily and is ongoing. Weather during the 26-month monitoring period was characterised by two months of greater than normal precipitation followed by nine months of normal precipitation and 15 months of abnormally dry conditions. Monitoring data indicate that deep percolation occurs in response to periods of extended precipitation, however, drying was observed to depths of six feet below the surface in all test plots. Using conservative assumptions regarding tailing hydraulic properties, one-dimensional downward flux predictions based on the monitoring data indicate very low (Additional long-term monitoring and installation of deeper and replicate monitoring sensors into tailings without cover systems are recommended to evaluate the long-term ET cover system performance and develop a better understanding of deep percolation rates at the sites.

Following the United Nations initiative to fingerprint the origin of conflict materials, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has decided to fund a pilot study on coltan ores. Since 2006, our working group has been investigating columbite- tantalite (coltan) mineralisation, especially in Africa, also within the wider framework of establishing certified trade chains. More than 300 samples were obtained from the worldÆs major coltan producing areas. Special attention is, however, directed to samples and concentrates from Ta-Nb-Sn provinces in Africa: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Mozambique, Ethiopia and Namibia. Using state of the art analytical tools, we investigate mineralogical and chemical parameters obtained from columbite-tantalite ores and concentrates in order to distinguish between ore provinces, likely even down to the deposit scale. Methods employed include fully automated electron microscopy (mineral liberation analysis), electron microprobe analysis (major and minor elements), laser ablation plasma-source mass spectrometry (trace elements and U-Pb dating), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (bulk major and trace elements), X-ray diffraction analysis (mineralogy and structure) and thermal-ionisation mass-spectrometry (U-Pb dating). Major and trace element concentration patterns, mineral assemblages in the ore concentrates, and zoning characteristics in the different pegmatites from Africa distinctly differ from each other. Furthermore, the following age populations are evident:Archaean (>2.6 Ga);Palaeoproterozoic (1.9 - 2.1 Ga);early Neoproterozoic (æKibaranÆ; 0.98 - 0.93 Ga); andlate Neoproterozoic to early Palaeozoic (ca 0.5 Ga). Currently, we focus on the resolution of the fingerprinting system from region via ore province down to deposit scale. Our preliminary analytical results indicate that a certification scheme including fingerprinting of sources of coltan ores is feasible.

The Dizon open pit mine of Benguet Corporation in western Central Luzon, Philippines has yielded some 182 000 t copper, and about 26 000 kg gold and 48 000 kg silver as by products since it started operation in November 1979. The 140 million tonne orebody is associated with a small quartz diorite porphyry stock emplaced in volcanic rocks on the basal slope of a stratovolcano complex as stockworks, fracture fillings and disseminated sulphide mineralization averaging 0.43% Cu, 0.93 g/t Au and 2.5 g/t Ag. Intense hydrothermal alteration accompanied the mineralization that developed fairly distinct mineral assemblages within and around the intrusive. Post-ore volcanic activity later gave birth to an upward-flaring diatreme which broke out south of and adjacent to the orebody and partially destroying it. Subsequent volcanic activity buried the mineralized area along with the rest of the stratovolcano's surrounding slopes under a thick deposit of pyroclastic and laharic debris. Erosion eventually removed the volcanic cappings over Dizon and also exposed the quartz diorite porphyry stock which might have resulted in the truncation of a sizeable section of the Dizon deposit. The chain of stratovolcanoes that comprise southeastern Zambales range hugging the southeastern edge of the Zambales ophiolite is part of a west-facing volcanic arc that extends for some 300 km along the western margin of central and southern Luzon whose development has been correlated to the subduction in the Manila Trench located off the west coast of Luzon. Prominent WNW-trending lineaments that cut across the ophiolite appear to be splays of the Philippine Fault whose intersection with the Mt. Pinatubo stratovolcano complex might have localized the emplacement of a number of intermediate stocks along with the gold-rich porphyry copper mineralizations associated with some of them.

With the prevalence of Mine Internet of Things (MIoT), different types of sensors have been widely deployed in mine sites for environmental monitoring and operational management. Currently, sensors in mine sites are mainly powered by cables or batteries. However, the deployment and maintenance of a power supply network can be difficult and expensive, and batteries have a limited lifespan. The vibration energy harvesting (VEH) technology can be used to provide power for lowpower sensors in mine sites. This presentation briefly introduces three widely used VEH methods (ie piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and electrostatic). The performance of a commercial electromagnetic energy harvester (ReVibe model D) is evaluated based on the vibration of a lab vibrator (3 g, 50 Hz) and an idling SUV automobile (0.3 g, 25 Hz). Experimental results indicate that a ReVibe energy harvester can generate adequate electricity to power a sensor, and its power output depends on the load resistance as well as the vibration frequency and amplitude of vibration sources. To apply VEH to mining applications, this study also analyses the characteristics of vibration sources at the mine site based on the vibration data collected from various operating machines in a coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP). The vibration analysis results indicate that all the measured vibration sources in the CHPP can generate stable and abundant vibrations, characterised by substantial amplitudes (up to 5.55 g) and low dominant frequencies (ranging from 14 Hz to 25 Hz), which are sufficient for VEH.

The segment of the Upper Cenozoic volcanic chain (CVZ) located on the western border of South America (16-28¦S lat.) is constituted by an association of strato- volcanoes and ignimbrite sheets, with high K calco-alkaline affinities. Strata-bound volcanoes, mainly of andesitic and dacitic composition, present along the whole chain, and various hydrothermal alteration zones, on the slopes and in the cores of eroded volcanic structures. Some of these altera- tion zones bear epithermal precious metal ores and sulphur deposits, which at present are being exploited. The studied Salar de Gorbea area, located in the Andes of northern Chile (25-26¦S lat.) contains a numer- ous group of Miocene to Quaternary stratovolcanoes, with advanced argillic and extreme silicification hydrothermal alteration in their cores and on their slopes, favoring the formation of great volumes of alunite within altered zones and sulphur deposits in the higher parts of the volcanic edifices. Simultaneously, siliceous hydrothermal breccia of the phreato-magmatic type, with evidences of hydromag- matic explosions are recognizable, allowing, in some cases, the ascent towards the surface of rock fragments belonging to the Paleozoic pre volcanic basement. Radiometric ages obtained in some of the hydro- thermal alteration zones (K-Ar in alunite) are slighty young- er than the unaltered rocks which constitute the strato- volcano. Trace element (Hg, As, Sb, S, Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo) patterns in orientative rock samplings show that the studied alterations zones correspond to high sectors of the cpithermal system, without evidences of metallic minerali- zation on surface. The weak erosive action due to the ex- tremely and climatic conditions in this segment of the Andes, has not allowed the cropping out of deeper areas of the hydrothermal alteration zones, in contrast to other Miocene more eroded volcanic edifices and Miocene vol- canic terranes of the Andean Range.

Rock mass discontinuity mapping plays a crucial role in developing a reliable Discrete Fracture Network (DFN), providing insights into the distribution of geometrical and mechanical properties of discontinuities. This enables an accurate assessment of geotechnical infrastructure and mining excavations. Data obtained through conventional mapping approaches are substantially limited by factors such as accessibility and subjectivity. Moreover, these conventional methods may pose inherent risks due to manual techniques, exposing practitioners to potential dangers. Recent digital developments in remote surveying techniques offer opportunities for safer and more reliable rock mass discontinuity surveys. These technologies allow extensive three-dimensional surveying and the production of high-resolution 3D surface models, applicable at any time. This paper presents a workflow for digital discontinuity mapping employing drone technology and photogrammetry. Additionally, the capabilities and challenges of applying artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the rock mass discontinuity characterisation process are discussed.

Collectors are used to impart hydrophobicity on particles thus increasing their chances of reporting to the froth phase. Also, the extent to which naturally hydrophobic gangue particles, such as talcaceous minerals, report to the froth can be reduced by the use of depressants. Thus the use of collectors and depressants will directly influence the extent to which hydrophobic particles report to the froth. However these hydrophobic particles will also have a direct effect on the characteristics of the froth phase, more strongly hydrophobic particles causing a reduction in the stability of the froth with the expected concomitant effects on grade and recovery. This study included microflotation (ie frothless flotation) and batch flotation of various ores using a number of different collectors and depressants and a newly developed froth imaging device (SmartfrothTM). Flotation performance was characterised by mass and water recovery, and recoveries and grades of the valuables. This paper shows how the various reagents influenced the behaviour of the pulp and froth phases. The critical importance of managing the type and dosage of reagents used in flotation with a view to optimising their influence on the froth phase is discussed.

The influence of three important para- meters which affect the induration of iron-ore pellets, viz temperature, time, and lime content, have been assessed in terms of internal pellet structure and commonly-used pellet quality criteria. The pellets studied were produced from a typical hematite ore from the Pilbara area of Western Australia, using a 25 cm dia. pot-grate test rig. Isothermal laboratory induration tests were conducted in accordance with a statistically-planned programme. The internal structures were studied by optical microscopic examination of polished sections of the test pellets. The effects of SFCA (silico- ferrite of calcium and aluminium) and slag formation, matrix consolidation and grain modi- fications were studied, and have been related to pellet properties and to the time/temperature histories produced by the firing conditions chosen. The implications of the data for commercial pellet plant operations are discussed.

Digital computers, by virtue of their capacity for high speed repetitive calculation at low cost, are finding increasing application to routine calcula- tions in the mining industry. In this paper techniques are shown whereby the use of computers can be extended to more complex tasks. The regular calculation of grades and tonnages of material to be extracted from specified areas of an operating open pit is a necessary part of production planning. In this paper it is shown how these calculations can be carried out by computer. thereby freeing planning staff from manual calculation. An operating open-pit mine can be described in terms of drill logs, geological ore boundaries and pit perimeters at various levels. These form the data base which must be suitable for frequent updating to incorporate new information. A suite of computer programmes is described which operates on this data base to calculate tonnages and grades of ore within extensions to the perimeters as indicated to the system by planning staff. Possible future extensions are discussed.

Geological data provides the foundations for the mining value chain. It is used to underpin the modelling and planning and consequently optimise downstream business decisions. However, it is often forgotten or taken for granted. End users often assume the data to be sound without verification. Geological data can be considered a company’s number one asset. Subsequently, the storage, use and management of this data need careful curation and time invested in preserving and protecting it. An established polymetallic mine with 20 000 drill holes could have a data replacement value in excess of $500M at 2020 prices, excluding labour and salary costs. The Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the ‘JORC Code’) provides guidelines for Public Reporting. Within the code, Table 1 requires discussion around the different types of geological data, its collection and use. What is needed is additional details regarding the validation and integrity of the geological database. A comprehensive guideline specifying minimum geological standards for geological databases has been developed. This expands on the critical points outlined in Table 1 of the JORC Code. This guideline can be used by companies where geological databases are managed in-house or used to assess these services’ outsourcing. This guideline will ensure that geological data is reliable and unadulterated and can be used with confidence. Using this guideline will assist in preserving the investment of geological data in the mining value chain

The Tropicana Gold Mine, owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70% owned and managed) and Independence Group NL (30%) is located 330 kilometres east-northeast of Kalgoorlie, Australia, in the newly developed Albany-Fraser Orogen. Following extensive feasibility studies, a high pressure grinding roll (HPGR)-ball milling circuit was selected based on the reduced power requirements and thus reduced operating expenses. The HPGR-ball mill circuit was estimated to require 75% of the energy of a standard semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuit. Even with an anticipated greater capital cost, the HPGR-ball mill circuit was found to give significantly better financial returns in all cases investigated in the feasibility study. A comparison between the specific energy requirements of the HPGR, crush and SAG based circuits (SABC) from the feasibility work was conducted and the HPGR circuit was found to be considerably more energy efficient. A survey was conducted and the efficiency of the HPGR was similar to both the overall circuit design and the HPGR laboratory results, reflecting the accuracy that is possible for design and operation of HPGR circuits.Between 2015 to 2016, the Tropicana circuit has achieved a 20% increase in throughput from 780 to 930 t/h, and this increase has been maintained in 2017. This improvement can largely be attributed to upgrades to material handling processes, increased HPGR speed and smaller HPGR screen apertures. Australia's first offshsore well was spudded in on 27th December 1964 and resulted in the discovery of the Barracouta gas field. Further exploratory drilling led to the discovery of the Marlin gas field in December 1965, the Kingfish oil field in April 1967 and the Hblibut oil field in June. 1967. In September 1968, a small oil reservoir was found in a sand below the main Barracouta'gas reservoir. M. Hopkins. _ Development of the commercial fields is being undertaken on an equal participation basis by Hematite Petroleum Pty. Ltd. and Esso Exploration and Production Australia Inc. Esso Standard Oil (Australia) Ltd. is responsible for the design, construction and operation of the production facilities.
