"The current economic challenges faced by the mining industry led to a review of options for reducing the cost of ventilation control devices (VCDs). The VCDs at the Mount Isa Mines site operated by Glencore in Queensland typically experienced significant damage on the operating levels and required expensive replacements. Ventilation controls can become damaged by the effects of stope firings. This paper discusses the nature of blast wave effects, giving consideration to distance from the firing and changes in mine geometry. The time taken to adjust the airflow on the operating levels with the current VCDs resulted in the loss of productivity opportunities. The mine site engaged an equipment supplier to collaborate on the development of a high-strength regulator to control the required airflows within its underground workings.The strengthened regulator proved to be cost-effective and provided additional benefits, including ease of use, simplicity of installation and speed of change in the control of available ventilating airflow. An added advantage of the re-engineered regulator compared to contemporary VCDs is its flexibility, which includes the ability to easily move mobile equipment into different ventilation districts where required without the need to remove the VCD from its location. The mining industry often embraces mine closure criteria that require the reinstatement of predisturbance or even presettlement (ie historic) ecosystems. However, the extent and severity of disturbance associated with most mining activities mean that critical physical and biological characteristics are irreversibly altered. Consequently, it is rare that a reconstructed landscape can support ecosystems even close to the historic condition, and this rarity is reflected in the small number of mine leases that have been extinguished by attainment of such completion criteria. Novel ecosystems are defined as those in which some or all physical and biotic components are irreversibly different from the historic condition. Recognition of the concept of novel ecosystems allows mine closure criteria to be set according to attainable physical and biological conditions that provide safe, stable and manageable environments with acceptable ecological functions. We propose that a landscape that first maximises physical stability and economy yet will provide a range of environments for vegetation communities and fauna habitats that may be very different from those existing prior to a disturbance should be considered suitable alternatives to, eg targeting idealised historic environments. As a result, mine closure criteria should be established by detailed description of the best attainable physical conditions, with negotiated identification and testing of the most appropriate biological systems for the various parts of the reconstructed landscape. As a general practice, revegetation would use native, but not necessarily local species if the new physical environment is not conducive to the survival and growth of local species. These new ecosystems would need to be managed in perpetuity, although the intensity of management might be low if landscape design and engineering are combined with appropriate species introductions. Here, we suggest an abbreviated procedure that may be adapted in light of local conditions and circumstances for guiding decisions influencing the physical and biological properties of reconstructed landscapes that will enable novel ecosystems to meet realistic closure criteria.CITATION:Doley, D and Audet, P, 2014. ‘Every mine is a pilot’ is an attitude which encourages the mining paradox of optimistic mine plans and equipment under performance; propped up by an environment lacking accountability. The premise that ‘every mine is a pilot’, appears to underlie the development and operating approach to most mines. It is the hypothesis of this paper that many mining companies, development teams and their managers largely ignore what is done elsewhere. Anecdotally, most planners don’t know whether the selected rates are high or low (rates based on theoretical models tend to be high – certainly higher than what most companies can achieve). Mines then consistently operate the equipment at rates well below targets; often more than 20 per cent below. Further to this paradox, mine performance data demonstrates the average mine is currently operating their equipment at levels of output not much more than half the output of those in the top ten per cent. On the whole mines don’t know the potential of their equipment and therefore don’t put appropriate plans in place to do better. After all, when ‘every mine is a pilot’ there is little reason to look to one’s peers for an indication of potential. This paper will outline why every mine is not a pilot and how mines do value some knowledge, but not as much as they should. This paper proposes a two-pronged approach to address this issue in the area of equipment performance. The quantity of post-consumer ‘waste’ materials generated each year is rapidly increasing. These materials can contain significant quantities of critical metals and present an environmental challenge if landfilled. The ISACYCLE™ technology is a proven solution for the processing of these materials. In the ISACYCLE™ furnace, the post-consumer materials are processed to recover energy along with any contained critical metals, in the form of a base metal alloy or matte. In addition, a clean aggregate (slag) is generated, which has the potential to be used for a range of applications in the construction industry. This slag is commonly based on a fayalite slag but is modified to manage the complex feed. This paper will review the fayalite slag system and the theoretical modifications required for treating urban wastes. Slags from an ISACYCLE™ furnace processing urban wastes have been sampled and characterised. The chemistry of these samples will be reviewed and compared to the expected theoretical modifications required.

For metallurgical plant design, it is necessary to progress through successive phases of test work, piloting and process development before involving all the other engineering disciplines and “freezing” the process design criteria and flow sheet. This process usually relies upon the experience, skills and personal preferences of various technology providers, study and engineering entities, test work and metallurgical laboratories and, most importantly, the owner’s team and its operators. Current industry trends include lower grades, more complex orebodies, geometallurgy in defining orebody variation and design envelopes, more common “hybrid” plant processes and the market demands for more reliable, timely and predictable early plant performance.This paper will discuss interaction of these trends and provide guidelines for the level of detail and technical complexity required for a number of different “typical” examples. The paper will pay particular attention to the study definition level translated into the required detail and certainty needed by the overall process “owner” and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) equipment suppliers to ensure the best real plant performance. Some recent case studies will be discussed. In many projects, at a late stage of project definition, it has become common practice to undertake a “value engineering” phase. Although it could be argued that this should be undertaken earlier, it is largely driven by an overall need to reduce capex and “optimise” the perceived “fat” built into the project during the detailed design process. This value engineering can be very counterproductive to project timing and operational performance and warrants discussion.The paper is intended to promote discussion on a topic of wide interest. Silver and gold bearing ore from the Troy Resources NL Casposo Gold-Silver Project, located within the San Juan Province of Argentina contains a complex mix of gold, silver, electrum and silver sulphides in the ore. Casposo is a typical low sulphidation epithermal style gold–silver deposit where mineralisation is hosted within rhyolite – andesite flows and breccias. Veins are typically banded quartz–chalcedony colloform - crustiform banded with quartz - carbonate infill. Mineralisation is associated with an assemblage consisting of quartz, chalcedony, adularia, calcite, illite, sericite and trace sulphides. Gold and silver occur as electrum, native silver, sulfosalts and silver sulphides. This paper presents a case study that describes the process selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of gold and silver from this ore.The original feasibility study, modelling, metallurgical testwork and engineering studies are outlined. The final flowsheet was based on minimising capital cost, operability, recovery and minimising technical risk.The process flowsheet uses the traditional Merrill Crowe route because of the high silver to gold ratio in the feed and achieves maximum gold and silver recovery while providing a common facility for future ore body treatment.

The use of photogrammetry has greatly increased the accuracy of 3D mapping underground. However, this has not reduced the need or desire for geologists to produce plans and sections showing an interpretation of the mapped geology. At the Waihi Underground Gold Mine, a hybrid solution has been developed that utilises the accuracy of photogrammetry and mapping onto face photos with the CAD-based Deswik.MappingTM functions to create plan and section maps. These have the benefit of looking like traditional paper maps but are more spatially accurate and richly attributed with metadata that can be filtered and exported to downstream processes. Deswik.MappingTM is a tablet-based solution that allows the geologist to map digitally with a stylus. Automation is utilised for the updating of survey as-builts, approved designs, drill holes, geological mapping, vein interpretations and mine work areas, reducing the requirement to print out maps at various locations and scales. Having 3D mine software on a tablet device provides a wealth of features not available when using paper: scaling is a problem of the past; information can be turned on and off; features can be viewed in 3D; and measurements between points of interest can be calculated in 3D space, for example, between vein wireframes and drill hole sample information. A suite of custom scripts has been developed that take the spatially accurate, registered and attributed polyline data from photogrammetry scans and converts them to a geological mapping legend with vein textures, structural information, and lithological boundaries. These 3D maps can be plotted in plan or section view and satisfy the requirements of the most ardent paper map supporter.

Ore deposits of rare earth elements (REE) in South-East Asia are classified into four types: carbonatite, allanite, ion-adsorption and placer. Occurrences of the carbonatite deposits are confined almost exclusively to the Red River Fault Zone of northern Vietnam. Since the carbonatites contain dominantly REE fluorocarbonates (eg bastnasite) and lesser amounts of monazite, they are rich in light REE but poor in heavy REE. The ion-adsorption type deposits and prospects were found in Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. The ion-adsorption ores generally show lower REE grades than those of the carbonatite type and placer deposits; however, they could be enriched in HREE, which are more precious and scarce commodities than LREE. The ores consist of weathered granites with a significant amount of ion-exchangeable REE, which are extracted by using a dilute electrolyte solution. The ion-exchangeable REE are likely to be sourced from REE fluorocarbonates, allanite and titanite because these minerals are relatively susceptible to weathering and release REE3+ ions into soil water. In contrast, monazite and xenotime are resistant to chemical weathering and could form placer ores. Placer monazite and xenotime have been processed as by-products of placer Sn, Zr or Ti in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, although the current production is small.CITATION:Sanematsu, K, 2015. The literature relating to reduction of sulphides by carbon using lime as sulphur-absorbent is reviewed. A stage-wise thermodynamic model is employed to evaluate the practical feasibility of the direct reduction smelting of galena (PbS) concentrates with a carbon reductant in the presence of lime; a coke-rate of 65 kg/ton Pb is predicted by the model. The experimental data on the reduction of PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures under nitrogen were correlated by means of a finite difference numerical method and the values of the intrinsic rate constant I1 were derived. The results for the uncatalysed reduction are represented satisfactorily with log I1 = 1.247(±0.522) - 5540(±610)T-1.The catalysed PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures contained 2.5 wt% of ternary (K, Li, Na)2CO3 catalyst. For the catalysed reduction it was found that log I1 = 3.981 (±0.301) -7790(±353)T-1, where I1 (in both relations) is expressed in moles.(g.C.)-1.atm-1.s -I. The catalytic enhancement faclor was found to be quite large in the 1068 to 1262°K temperature range investigated here.

Grade control systems within Rio Tinto Iron Ore have proven to be robust, when mining full benches. The Hope Downs 1 operation hosting two Marra Mamba Iron Formation deposits (North and South Deposits) presents a new challenge, where increased mining selectivity due to moderately plunging N-verging folds has made flitch mining necessary in the South Deposit. Poor flitch blasthole sample duplicate results in South Deposit over a 12 month period, compared to North Deposit, have highlighted concerns with grade predictions. In contrast a new grade control methodology (grade splitting) was proposed to alleviate blasthole sampling bias, utilising geological mapping and mineralogical logging, currently practised throughout Rio Tinto Iron Ore Pilbara operations, to estimate theoretical grades for each flitch from a single blast cone assay. To assess this method, reverse circulation holes (RC) were twinned to blastholes establishing an ‘actual’ grade. These blastholes were assayed using current flitch sampling techniques where: flitch positions were estimated, flitch positions were marked with paint, and a full cone sample was taken for ‘grade splitting’. Using these data sets multiple grade predictions were produced, then analysed using Half Absolute Relative Difference (HARD) statistical analysis. In addition to testing these grade control methodologies two other findings were ascertained: an inherent bias in blasthole assays exists particularly in the top flitch, where an average absolute difference of 0.6 per cent in SiO2 and 0.42 per cent Al2O3 was measured; and assays derived where kaolin rich soft shales are intersected were less representative. This is likely to be due to these materials not being properly represented in blast cones. Grade splitting accurately estimated block chemistry, except for a slight under-prediction in Al2O3 and P compared to current grade control methodologies. This method is a viable alternative where grade distribution is stratigraphically controlled.

The mining sector has been a leader in investing in safety improvement initiatives, yet relatively few mining organisations can accurately track the positive effects of these initiatives or identify areas that may require more attention. The consequences of not taking safety seriously are severe, and unfortunately injuries and fatalities are continuing to occur across the mining sector (Brady, 2019). There is a tendency to turn to lag indicators such as All Injury Frequency Rate (AIFR), Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR), and Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) to track these outcomes. As outlined below these approaches are inherently flawed and a renewed focus is needed on indicators within the control of leaders, indicators that have high predictive validity for future events and data that is used in a way to enable learning and change.

In the 1990s round flotation tanks were introduced as a result of the lower fabrication costs for larger cells. It was soon observed that round tanks held a number of further advantages over the traditional rectangular cells, such as better hydrodynamics, lower costs and reduced footprint per unit volume.In the last twenty years flotation cell sizes have increased almost exponentially and designs of 250 to 300m3 are a well established standard with plans for full scale pilot installations of 500m3. The option to install these large cells gives flexibility in circuit arrangements and allows efficient and economic matching of flotation lines with modern mill designs. The benefits of scale up are well known with reduced numbers of cells required, lower power costs per unit volume, etc. These benefits will be briefly reviewed with specific reference to the installation of 300m3 to 350m3 flotation cells at the Copperton Concentrator of Kennecott Copper in Utah, USA.The sophisticated techniques required to model these ‘supercells’ have led to a critical review of the fundamentals of flotation science and engineering. In addition to outlining the advantages of large flotation cells, this paper will review the science which supports, and occasionally challenges, the ongoing trend to larger flotation cells.

One of the problems with mining projects is the setting of the design criteria that will best match the requirements. Normally this is expressed in economic terms but can be other factors. With massive orebodies these problems are often compounded by the general lack of distinct mining boundaries. A technique using evaluation surfaces was developed at Palabora for the underground mine design. This technique has subsequently been applied on several other mining projects to assist in the determination of the design criteria. This paper discusses the method, illustrated by some of the results of these studies.

The Per Geijer iron oxide apatite deposits (IOA) display significant potential mineral resources for Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (publ), known as LKAB. LKAB continuously mines magnetite/hematite ores in northern Sweden for almost 130 years. The Per Geijer deposits reveal a high phosphorus content and vary from magnetite-dominated to hematite-dominated ores, respectively. Furthermore, they show a large variation in texture, mineral composition, and relation to wall rocks. The high phosphorus concentration of these ores results from highly elevated content of apatite as gangue mineral. Reliable, robust, and qualitative characterisation of the mineralisation is required as these ores inherit complex mineralogical and textural features. For this purpose, comminution tests at laboratory scale in combination with scanning electron microscopy-mineral liberation analysis (SEMMLA) were carried out. Based on this work, significant information on the modal mineralogy and degree of liberation of minerals of economic interest (eg magnetite, hematite, and apatite) were obtained. Results show that there is a difference in the degree of liberation of magnetite and hematite between ore types. This seems to be dependent both on the size fractions and the dominance of each iron oxide in the individual ore type. The amount of gangue minerals seems to have no significant impact on the degree of liberation after comminution. Apatite is generally best liberated in ore types associated with silicates, regardless of magnetite or hematite dominance. Based on the results of this study it can be inferred that a high degree of liberation of the minerals of economic interest can be achieved. However, results need to be verified with further beneficiation steps such magnetic separation, apatite flotation and possibly reverse silicate flotation.

Gravity gold circuits have an important part in reducing operating costs and maximising recovery in modern gold plants where coarse gold is present in the ore body. The design and selection of equipment has a vital part in the overall effectiveness of the gravity gold circuit. There are a number of associated factors that need to be taken into consideration when selecting the most suitable equipment for gravity gold circuits including occupational health and safety, security and labour requirements. This paper is a case study that outlines the validation behind the design, selection of equipment and subsequent benefits of the recent upgrade of the gravity circuit at the Marvel Loch gold mine with the main component to the upgrade being the installation of a Consep Acacia Reactor. Since the upgrade there has been a significant increase in gravity recovery, which has reduced the amount of gold reporting to the leaching circuit therefore reducing reagent consumption and overall operating costs. There has been an increase in overall gold recovery and therefore increased gold production. The benefits to occupational health and safety include the removal of toxic gases being released in the gold room during the previous practice of gold concentrate calcination and the removal of the arsenic and nickel from the gold doré, which poses a risk during refining. Manual handling and security has improved as there is no physical contact with gold concentrates during the automated process using the Acacia reactor. The total time for gold room personnel working in the gold room has also reduced from around six hours per day to less than one hour per day.With the continuing development of low grade gold deposits, there will be an increase in demand for low capital, high recovery gravity gold circuits that can significantly increase overall production while reducing operating costs.

More and more mining companies are becoming aware of the potential benefits of sensor-based ore sorting and process optimisation. This is reflected by a growing number of analysers that are available for drill hole logging, conveyor belt scanning, ore sorting, slurry analysis, etc. These tools all rely on a specific sensor technology that can be used to detect a material property such as colour, density, mineralogy, or chemical elements. However, all sensors have restrictions on the minerals and/or elements that can be detected or inferred. This is caused by the physical mechanisms behind the technology and depends on mineral concentration and compositional heterogeneity of the ore. Since nearly every ore deposit is unique in composition and characterised by different geological features that drive heterogeneity, no one-size-fits-all sensor solution is available. This makes it difficult for mining professionals to find suitable sensing technologies that can help them solve problems and improve processes for their specific ore types.

The total number of tailings accidents has reduced from over 50/decade in the 1960s-1980s to less than 30/decade in the 2000s to 2010s. However, the rate of significant tailings dam failures has not been reduced. The significant tailings dam failures the mining industry experienced in the recent history include: Merriespruit, South Africa, 1994; Los Frails, Spain, 1998; Kolontár, Hungry, 2010; Mount Polley, Canada, 2014; and Samarco, Brazil, 2015. The conventional Factor of Safety approach itself may not be enough to further reduce the rate of significant tailings failures due to its limitations such as uncertainty. For example, the same factor of safety could have a vast range of annual probability of failure for different tailings dams, and insufficient consideration of failure consequence. This paper presents a risk based approach for design with the objective being to minimise tailings dam failures, especially those significant tailings failures with high consequence and low probability. This approach includes risk based design and risk management using bowtie tools. In the risk based design, quantitative analysis will be used to estimate the annual probability of failure and the tolerable failure criteria is linked to the consequence category. Bowtie analyses will be used to understand hazards and risks and identify and select independent controls that are effective in preventing and mitigating catastrophic failures. The operations and project environments are very different, but overlap in many areas. The development of mineral processing projects is goal oriented, is schedule focused and is a contractual environment. The operating environment for a mineral processing plant is oriented around longer-term commitments, focused on delivery against budget expectations, and an environment heavily influenced by long-term personal relationships, community relationships, and people issues.Further contrast is evident in the way expenditure is managed. Projects commit large amounts of money quickly to meet schedule-based objectives. Operations manage expenditure to minimise operating costs and are able to, or are forced to delay decisions on large expenditures. However, these two environments need to come together in many ways, ranging from greenfields plant handover to a new operations and maintenance crew, to day to day interaction and management of brownfields projects, often in close proximity.This paper considers the different perspectives people bring to projects and early operations, including the advantages and disadvantages of æoperationsÆ input to a project and models for managing value adding during project development, implementation and debottlenecking.CITATION:Lane, G and Clements, B, 2012.
