Considering the capital outlay, running costs and inherent difficulties of backfilling operations at depth the benefits need to be clearly established, quantified and then exploited. Expansion of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company towards even deeper, highly faulted ground, and the process of establishing codes of practice for the management of rockfalls and rockbursts, required that a sound support strategy be formulated. This paper describes the derivation of an overall backfilling strategy on Vaal Reefs. Use was made of experience gained over some 12 years with backfilling. Numerical modelling was used to estimate potential benefits of backfilling the deepest mining areas still to be extracted. In exploiting a probably unique opportunity, two contiguous mining areas bounded by the same major geological structures, were compared. One was extensively backfilled and the other not at all. Shaft sinking through a backfilled stope added another dimension to the database. Backfilling was introduced in 1985 and several potential spin-offs were expected. These included improved local strata control for fall of ground and rockburst conditions, regional benefits in rock mass stability and mine ventilation optimisation.

"Premature failure of rock bolts has been recorded at twelve underground coalmines over the past 15 years in Australia. Over the last four years, UNSW Australia has been conducting an Australian Research Council (ARC) and Industry funded linkage research project into premature failure of rock bolts. The extent of the problem was investigated by underground surveys of mines with known prematurely failed bolts using visual mapping, non-destructive load and ultrasound testing. A major component of this project was to define the environmental factors responsible for corrosion of rock bolts. The environment to which a rock bolt is exposed will include groundwater chemistry, the mineralogy of the strata, atmosphere within the drill hole and even microbial activity. This paper focuses on the groundwater survey and analysis findings to date along with in-hole bolt corrosion coupons installed into field sites. Corrosivity classification systems exist for general corrosion but do not apply to the rock bolt stress corrosion cracking (SCC) problem found in Australian underground coal. The method of in situ investigations is leading towards the building of a corrosivity classification model to assist mines in prediction of premature rock bolt failure. BHAS, together with the G.K. Williams Laboratory, and Ausmelt Pty. Ltd., has examined a number of possible alternatives to conventional silver cupellation in gas fired reverberatory furnaces. Of these alternatives, a Sirosmelt furnace was preferred for both technical and economic reasons. Small scale work on Sirosmelt processes was carried out at the G.K. Williams Laboratory at Melbourne University in 1985/86. Pilot scale work was carried out at the Ausmelt plant in Melbourne in July 1987. Board approval for construction of a full size plant was received in October, 1988, and construction of the plant is currently underway. The plant is expected to provide significant savings in operating costs and silver inventory. Hygiene around the furnace should also be greatly improved. An increase in cupellation rate of at least ten times is expected, compared with the conventional reverberatory furnace.

Experiments have been carried out to establish whether time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is able to differentiate monolayer and multilayer coverage of thiol collectors on sulfide minerals. The systems investigated were those for which x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is able to provide an independent determination of the extent of coverage, and included diethyldithiophosphate (DTP) and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) on chalcocite, DTP on Ag2+MS prepared by sulfidising metallic silver, and isobutyl xanthate (BX) and MBT on galena. For monolayer adsorption of MBT on chalcocite, peaks from MBTû but not Cu(MBT)û ions were evident. For multilayer coverage, Cu(MBT)2û ions were clearly present, notwithstanding the fact that other data had identified the principal multilayer species as Cu(MBT). For adsorbed DTP on copper and silver sulfides, DTPû and metal(DTP)Hû peaks were observed for monolayer and multilayer coverage. Although the multilayer species was expected to be predominantly metal(DTP), metal(DTP)2û ions were evident for multilayer (but not monolayer) coverage. For the PbS/BX system, intact Pb(BX)2 or Pb(OH)BX ions were not detected for multilayer coverage, although Pb-containing ions heavier than PbBX were. Indeed, for all the systems studied, ToF-SIMS was able to differentiate monolayer from multilayer coverage. In general, however, the SIMS evidence alone might not be sufficiently definitive to effect the differentiation. In the case of collector adsorption on copper and silver sulfides, if the multilayer species detected had been the metal monothiolate only, and had not involved the formation of some metal dithiolate, then ToF-SIMS might not have been able to provide an unequivocal differentiation of the two coverage conditions.

Geological maps of the Pacific Rim recently published by the Circum-Pacific Council for Energy and Mineral Resources have provided a useful perspective from which to view modern plate interaction and the evolution of modern fold belts. An important lesson from any study of modern plate interaction is that of the normality of change. The chaotic is more usual than the simple. Present day convergent margins with mixed characteristics are measures of this chaos. Indeed, the character of less than one third of the present length of the Pacific Rim can be ascribed to conventional models of plate interaction. Another lesson is that of the great mobility of oceanic crust. Enormous areas of the Pacific may not be represented in future fold belts developed at convergent boundaries unless normal consumption processes are disrupted, and even then only by linear zones a few kilometres wide. The axes of divergent boundaries creating Pacific Ocean crust have been equally mobile, with new spreading sites taking over from older sites through time. Divergent boundaries, whether active or inactive, consist of oceanic crust, and may be wholly consumed at collision sites with convergent boundaries. Their only potential contributions to fold belt evolution are transforms and magmatic activity. It is this transform component that can provide us with a mechanism to explain the apparent contradiction of both compressional and extensional features occurring together in a developing fold belt. Reconstructions for the SW Pacific are used to demonstrate that the fold belts under construction during the last 4% (Jurassic- Recent) of geologic time have involved interaction between convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries. Traditional method of explicitly defining three-dimensional (3D) ore-waste and geological boundaries relies heavily on a time-consuming process of manual digitisation. This method of modelling can be best described as surface modelling, as complex surface geometry is built up by digitising points that lie on the surface. With the advent of fast 3D interpolation methods, however, construction of geological surfaces using volume functions is now a practical alternative to explicit modelling of surfaces. Unlike explicit modelling, surfaces contained in volume functions are not explicitly defined or digitised. Instead the existence of surfaces in the volume function is implicit, thus the process of modelling surfaces from volume function is called æimplicit modellingÆ. Based on recent advances in fast scattered data interpolation methods, implicit modelling first defines a continuous three-dimensional function that describes the grade or rock distribution. This volumetric function is interrogated for a grade value, or a geological surface, thus allowing the extraction of the 3D object to be automated and eliminating the need to manually digitise surfaces. Since the function is continuous throughout space and does not depend on a mesh or grid for its definition, the extracted geological or grade wireframes can be constructed at any desired resolution in the specific volume of interest. The volume modelling method can work on scattered drillhole data of any data density, including processing combined information from dense grade control data as well as sparse resource drilling. It offers distinct advantages over surface modelling, including: being able to wireframe geological objects that may take days to digitise in tens of minutes; substantial improvement in modelling accuracy; and the ability to generate conditional models rapidly allowing mining risks inherent in geological modelling to be examined.

Rotary kilns have been in service in the gold industry to regenerate carbon for 65 years. At the time oxide ores with gold head grades of 8 to 10 g/t were being treated. Carbon could be regenerated adequately at 650°C and solution losses were less than 1%. Forty years ago, research indicated that heavily fouled carbon from flotation circuits had to be held at 750 to 850°C for ten to twenty minutes for full reactivation (Avraamides and La Brooy, 1987), gold head grades were typically 5 g/t and solution losses typically 0.02 ppm – still less than 1%. In 2017 it was determined (Claflin et al., 2017) that a residence time of less than 1 minute at 750°C can be adequate to reactivate carbon fouled with organics sufficiently to achieve 0.005 ppm solution losses in a flotation tailings leach plant.With the potential for discovery head grades to drop below 0.6 g/t, solution losses of 0.02 ppm represent over 3% loss. Tight operation of the whole carbon circuit is required to keep gold solution losses below 1% going forward.There are alternatives to a rotary carbon kiln, e.g. vertical kilns of which the Minfurn, Rintoul and Combustion Air kilns are examples. The alternative kilns can be heated using electrical heating elements, induction, and microwave. These kilns can operate successfully under the right conditions, however, they are almost exclusively for small carbon throughputs and are not suitable for the large carbon advance rates that are required to process low head grade ore deposits. Large throughput carbon kilns are are almost exclusively fossil fuel fired rotary kilns and the subject of this paper. In the view of the principal author, a fossil fuel fired vertical carbon kiln is preferred to a rotary kiln, however, it is not currently used in the industry.Thermal regeneration of activated carbon has a major impact on gold recovery in the carbon circuit. The carbon kiln and associated equipment constitute 3 to 5% of the capital cost for an oxide processing plant and up to 10% of the capital cost if flotation tails are leached. Despite the capital cost and impact on recovery, the carbon kiln is often poorly selected, operated and maintained.Six years ago Ausenco embarked on the Carbon Kiln Initiative to reduce solution gold losses. This body of knowledge has been published in a series of papers culminating in this paper on how to:1. Select a kiln appropriate for the flowsheet;2. "Copper-ammonia-thiosulfate?leaching of gold has been researched for several decades as a potential alternative to cyanidation. However, this technology has not yet been applied commercially due to many challenges such as complex solution chemistry, reagent degradation and losses, system instability with losses of precious metals and difficulties in gold recovery from the leachate. Progress has been made at CSIRO in tackling some of these challenges including:better understanding and control of the leach conditions to minimise reagent losses whilst maximising gold recovery use of strong base ion exchange resins to recover the gold strategies to deal with polythionates that adsorb competitively with gold on ion exchange resins development and evaluation of process flow sheets.As a result there has been increased interest from the gold industry and renewed activities to develop thiosulfate based processes for gold recovery. One application area, which has been developed to the point of piloting, is the treatment of gravity gold concentrates using a copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach with ion exchange recovery of the gold thiosulfate. This paper presents the results of research work conducted to assess if aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) can be used to treat roaster calcine leach residues such that recovery of gold in this material can be achieved with subsequent application of the thiocyanate (SCN-) leaching system. The project is mainly aimed at assessing an alternative use for sulfur dioxide gas generated during flotation concentrate roasting. The calcine leach residue sample used in the study contained 2.56 g/t gold. The reason for this high level of residual gold is thought to be due to gold surface passivation by thin iron oxide films, presence of gold in solid solution with refractory iron oxides and encapsulation of gold in the structure of these iron oxides.The study was conducted in three stages. The first stage was the characterisation of a sample from a roaster calcine leach residue. The second stage in the project was a set of leaching tests to assess the feasibility of using aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide to reductively dissolve refractory iron oxide mineral phases contained in the calcine. The final objective was to assess the efficiency of thiocyanate, a gold complexing ligand stable under acidic and oxidative conditions, to extract gold liberated during sulfur dioxide leaching.The study showed that the reductive sulfur dioxide treatment of the calcine leach residues followed by oxidative thiocyanate leaching to extract gold was not a particularly efficient process as only around 20 per cent gold could be extracted. Leaching the calcine residues by any of these systems separately also extracted the same amount of gold (12 - 14 per cent) implying that irrespective of the solution potential, the acidity helps dissolution of gold encapsulating minerals, mostly hematite, but at a very slow rate. The findings on the topic in the literature and during this study show the requirement for further technical investigations and economical analyses on two cases. The first case is to roast gold concentrates to produce magnetite rather than hematite followed by sulfur dioxide and thiocyanate leaching of magnetite containing calcines. The second case is to apply a magnetic concentration process to conventional roast-cyanidation calcine residues to produce a gold-rich magnetite concentrate that can be further treated with sulfur dioxide followed by thiocyanate leaching.For both cases, the best evaluation of the sulfur dioxide leach system in extracting residual gold from calcine leach residues will require a detailed economic analysis to find out the balance between the value of the gold recovered and the loss of revenue from acid production. There are a number of roasters that do not produce acid. The Platreef in South Africa contains one of the world’s largest reserves of platinum group elements. One of the major platinum group minerals (PGM) components in this ore is sperrylite (PtAs₂), which has been found to be slow floating compared to the other PGMs. In a study aimed at determining the reasons for the poor floatability of sperrylite and to improve its recovery, tests were carried out to determine the interactions of the mineral with a range of standard and novel collectors. Microflotation tests were carried out to determine the hydrophobicity of the minerals before and after adsorption of collectors. In addition, experiments were carried out to determine the enthalpy and extent of collector adsorption on the minerals and to investigate electrochemical interactions between sperrylite and selected standard collectors. The results indicated that poor collector adsorption was the major cause for the poor floatability of sperrylite. Sperrylite had both poor natural (14.5 per cent) floatability and collector-induced flotation recoveries, the highest recovery of 26 per cent being observed using PNBX collector at pH 9. Moreover, the rest potential tests showed that the interaction of sperrylite with standard collectors such as xanthates was poor. The decrease in potential after the addition of the standard collectors ranged from 7.9 mV to 24.9 mV under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, sperrylite rest potentials remained unchanged with a change in pH from basic to acidic, indicating its resistance to surface alteration. Surface alteration of the minerals is key for the chemisorption of collectors to take place on the mineral surface. This was further emphasised by flotation recoveries at low pH, where only certain collectors responded positively to a decrease in pH and these were shown to have undergone a structural change. This work has highlighted the difficulties associated with sperrylite flotation and provides some direction for future research.

Definition and delineation of in-pit ore and waste material are the most significant tasks for an open pit production geologist; adding or destroying value in the mining value chain. Anglo American’s Mogalakwena Platinum mine, an open pit operation in South Africa moving 100 Mt/a, has recognised the value of improved material definition and is in the process of changing from blasthole to reverse circulation (RC) sampling for in-pit grade control. This is aimed at obtaining more representative samples, which are required to maximise ore recovery, minimise waste dilution and to increase the accuracy and confidence of production forecasts. Early in the project, it was realised that the key risks for implementing RC grade control were related to change management processes, rather than failure of technology. Recognising the importance of this issue, Mogalakwena chose an integrated implementation approach that incorporates all stakeholders of the mining cycle in order to develop a process that delivers maximum value and is sustainable within an active mining environment. The following core goals were addressed over five phases of project implementation: extensive definition and design of integrated project implementation, comprising: project buy-in and ownership from all key stakeholders, including survey, geology, mine planning, drill and blast, load and haul, maintenance, supply chain and finance; and detailed analysis of all potential issues and possible solutions, allocated to stakeholders as part of the scoping process; optimising hole patterns and drilling procedures, focusing on delivering maximum value for minimum cost using multiple scenario analysis from borehole data and operational sequencing requirements; and evaluation of lessons learnt during project implementation in order to optimise the technical solution and operational efficiencies. Although this project is not yet finalised, Mogalakwena Platinum Mine is already providing a blueprint for the effective development, implementation and optimisation of sustainable in-pit grade control RC drilling for other open pit mines within Anglo American plc.

In an environment of lower zinc prices, falling revenues and reducing zinc feed grades, Century mine implemented a fast-tracked capital upgrade program in less than 15 months. The program was designed to increase ore milling throughput capacity by 20 per cent and optimise the capacity of the flotation plant to increase zinc recovery by approximately 2.5 per cent whilst maintaining final zinc concentrate grade.A key aspect of this program was minimising capital expenditure by better utilising existing capacity and only adding capacity where absolutely required to address critical processing bottlenecks. By gaining an understanding of plant process bottlenecks and future ore blends, and by carefully selecting appropriate technologies for particular specific flotation applications, maximum return on minimal capital investment was achieved.The close collaborative work achieved between the metallurgy processing department and other operational departments on-site was also critical to the success of this project. This work increased the mining and processing capacity of the mine and port site respectively, such that the full value of the process plant modification could be achieved.Capital payback on this investment was achieved in approximately three and a half months.This case study demonstrates the extra value to a mining business that can be achieved through fully understanding the mining/processing value chain and by careful targeted action to address critical bottlenecks in the processing chain from the mine through to the port site.CITATION:Akroyd, T J, Wynn, R and Costa, C, 2014. The technology of flotation recovery of silver from the residue of a zinc plant is described. The peculiarity of this technology is a preliminary pulp conditioning in sodium chloride solution in the presence of aluminum metal under high temperature. In this process the silver is converted to the metallic phase and then floated with the usual sulphydryl collectors. A variant using a combined technology is also described, in which before flotation is performed about 50 per cent of silver is leached. The total silver recovery with the combined technology comes up to 90 - 94 per cent.

A sulfide ion selective electrode was used to control sulfidiser addition in the flotation testing of a synthetic and a naturally occurring ore containing malachite in order to compare the behaviour of sodium sulfide and calcium polysulfide. Both slug and controlled potential sulfidisation methods of addition were used. Under defined optimum CPS conditions, calcium polysulfide was a more effective sulfidising agent than sodium sulfide on the basis of both capital and operating costs. Surface and solution studies were used to compare the mechanism of each sulfidiser. For calcium polysulfide, XPS showed that polysulfide ions are adsorbed, whereas for sodium sulfide it is the hydrosulfide ions that are adsorbed on the mineral surface. For calcium polysulfide, the CuSx layer was believed to form on the malachite surface, which promoted the flotation of the malachite, by xanthate. Studies of surface morphology of the sulfidised malachite showed that a fairly uniform sulfidised layer is formed with both reagents. The use of sodium sulfide resulted in a thinner initial sulfidised layer compared to polysulfide at equivalent initial sulfur concentration.

Traditional methods for installing gaskets for segmented bored tunnels have relied upon different bonding procedures with adhesives that carry a series of disadvantages to segment producers. Fixation of the gaskets into the concrete segment as part of the casting procedure has been developed over the last 20 years and has emerged as an economical solution to produce high-quality tunnel segments for various technical tunnel applications. Mining is a major global industry that requires the moving of considerable volumes of earth and rock (overburden) to win the valuable ore prior to mineral extraction and processing. As a result of this process, new landscapes are created, both extracted voids and overburden piles, as well as infrastructure for management of mine operations, wastewater, tailings, other raw materials, transportation and extreme rainfall events. Resource companies must develop and obtain regulatory approval for detailed plans that manage this displaced material through all phases of the life-of-mine and rehabilitate the site at the time of closure (including landform stability, revegetation and ongoing management).Individual mine sites operate in long time frames (ten to 50 years), with several mines often operating in the same region, generating cumulative overburden volumes and heavily altering the original landscape. These impacts are universally framed as a negative consequence of the industry, especially by modern society that values natural (and some agricultural) landscapes as pristine and almost sacred. Overburden and tailings are also seen as a problem, and are a significant business cost to mining practice.This paper looks to investigate perceptions of mining and post-mining landscapes, questioning the aesthetically driven emphasis on the ‘natural’. It proposes instead an opportunity to reframe the way we look at overburden and landscape impacts from mining, exploring the possibility of imagined post-mine landscapes unburdened by traditional aesthetic expectations. These landscapes, to be conceived by regional stakeholder roundtables, have the capacity to be built by regional mining consortia as a foundation for sustainable post-mining economies.Post-mine regeneration offers both the motivation and the basic materials to create an altogether new environment from a blank slate. The sulfidisation, acidification, recycle and thickening (SART) process is currently being used at NewcrestÆs Telfer Gold Mine to recover cyanide and copper from the cyanidation tails of the pyrite concentrate carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. While the process has been effective at attaining high recoveries of cyanide and copper, the Telfer SART plant has experienced higher than expected sulfide additions to achieve these recoveries. This paper details the results of surveys on the Telfer SART plant, which show that residence time appears to be causing the high sulfide consumptions. Flotation has been in use at Broken Hill for nearly 100 years, and the process has gone through many different optimisation studies over that time. This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the Perilya Broken Hill Mine, and details one of the recent optimisation studies conducted using mathematical modelling and simulation tools. The optimisation study consisted of surveys of the lead and zinc circuits, mapping of the floatability components of the ore and developing models of the lead and zinc circuits. The models were then used to conduct simulations to simplify the circuit. The study allowed plant personnel to identify optimum operating conditions for their current flotation cells, as well as possible improvements in circuit configuration and cell capacity.

In this paper we describe the leaching characteristics of pure gold in thiosulfate solutions that contain a known chelator; meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). The interfacial and chemical characterisation of the system was accomplished using both electrochemical methods and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis after pure gold samples were exposed to solutions composed of 65 mM Na2S2O3, 1 mM NaOH and a range of DMSA concentrations. In the absence of DMSA, cyclic voltammetry revealed the onset of thiosulfate mediated gold dissolution, the degree of which was reduced at more positive potentials due to the formation of oxidised thiosulfate products on the gold surface. The addition of small amounts of DMSA (<10 ¦M) to the electrolyte resulted in minor changes to the voltammograms indicating a subtle interaction of the additive with the gold surface that may improve leaching. However, at higher concentrations of DMSA (up to 100 ¦M), electrochemical evidence suggests the formation of new oxidation products in solution as well as the formation of more compact monolayers of DMSA on the surface, which contribute to partial repassivation of the surface. The influence of DMSA on thiosulfate leaching of pure gold electrodes at the open circuit potential for a period of 90 minutes was tested and the corresponding gold leaching performance evaluated with ICP-MS analysis. Our data shows that small amounts of DMSA (1 ¦M) doubled the amount of total gold in solution when compared to the same study in the absence of the additive. However, higher concentrations (5 ¦M DMSA) reduced the overall amount of dissolved gold. These results may point to a mechanism where small amounts of DMSA improve leaching by adsorbing onto the surface in a highly defective monolayer that partially blocks or disrupts the formation of passivation products caused by thiosulfate oxidation, but excess DMSA can limit the leaching process itself by forming too coherent a monolayer on the gold surface.CITATION:Uceda, M, Choi, Y, Shepherd, J L and Guerra, E, 2013. This paper is a demonstration of the techniques developed during an Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded research project aimed to develop aids, principally computer based, to assist mine personnel to more efficiently manage significant incidents in coal mines. These aids include software to aid in the location of the incident, electronic information storage and retrieval, online site emergency response manuals and software to aid in decision-making.
