USE of geophysical methods in the search for new pools and as an aid in the development of known pools and prospects reached a new all-time peak for the oil industry in 1933. The outlook for 1934 is for work to continue at an even greater rate. The area of greatest activity, as in previous years, was in the Gulf coastal plain of Texas and Louisiana, particularly through a belt of territory some 20 to 30 miles wide parallel to the coast line and some 80 miles inland from it-the so-called "Jackson play" or "Conroe trend." This area was surveyed in an attempt to find additional pools of a type similar to Conroe, a pool not discovered directly as a result of geophysical surveys but one which was indicated by refraction surveys before it was drilled and one which was accurately outlined as to structure by reflection surveys shortly after the completion of the first few wells. Surveys were made over this belt, extending from Texas, across Louisiana and into Mississippi and Alabama, chiefly by the reflection method and torsion balance, and to some extent by pendulum and magnetic methods.

OXYGEN-FREE high-conductivity copper (OFHC brand) that is now being commercially offered for the first time represents a notable achievement in electro-metallurgy and is the outcome of endeavors that have extended over a long period. Its manufacture is novel in that electrolytically refined copper is melted in electric furnaces and cast into vertical water-cooled molds. The ingots show the "pipe" characteristic of sound gas-free metal and microscopic examination even at high magnification reveals no cuprous oxide in the copper. Owing to the patent situation, the United States Metals Refining Co., the producers, cannot at this time divulge the details of manufacture, but the operations are under precise control so that the castings are of great uniformity and the copper contains no residual deoxidant. IN other countries, research involving testing in various phases of ground movement and lessening its damaging effects, as by roof control, is going on more intensively than in this country, as evidenced by official mining papers and general articles appearing- in .Great Britain, Germany, France, and South Africa. One most important bulletin, "Some Aspects of Deep Level Mining on the Witwatersrand Gold Mines with Special Reference to Rock Bursts,"' was published by the Association of Mine Managers of the Transvaal, Johannesburg, under date of June, 1933, though not received in this country until 1.934. Since the deepest mining in the world is being done on the Rand-several mines over 7000 ft. deep and the Robinson mine 8000 ft.-the studies made are of intense interest to all mining men who have to deal with heavy ground pressure. In the discussion following the papers differences of opinions are shown on a number of problems; for example, on the ade¬quacy of sand-filling to prevent rock bursts and whether compressible or rigid artificial supports are best; also whether pressure bursts are due to the doming of strata and collapse of a lag of the dome or to induced shear cracks in the hanging wall. The problem of obtaining some means of warning of an impending rock burst led to testing with height indicators to find whether warning might be obtained by the lessening of distance between hanging wall and footwall. The indicators used are similar in idea but not in detail to the "convergence recorders" developed by the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain for their roof-control studies in coal mines. Success at several Rand mines is claimed in that indicator records give some degree of warning when the lessening of height is rapid, although, on the other hand, when this happens bursts do not always occur.

WITH the modern trend toward motor drive in coal mines, more careful forethought should be given to future layouts than has usually been done in the past. Both top and bottom equipment of future new mines is likely to differ radically from those of a decade ago. No one is able to predict very far ahead, but provisions can be made to allow for uncertainty. One thing stands out: the mine of the future will be laid out for long life compared to that of the small mine of the past, where an inexpensive top plant, simple equipment, a small timbered shaft, small cars, light rail, hand loading and mule haulage all contributed to a short economical life.

FOR many years the developers or owners of worthy mining ventures in need of financing have found it almost impossible to obtain such financing under the conditions existing in most other lines of business. High rates of interest and unfair participation in profits have robbed the developers of much of their holdings, and have resulted in over-capitalization and many other like evils. When the general financial condition of the country is bad, this difficulty increases to a point where many operations must cease and hen are thrown out of employment. In 1.934 this situation had developed to such a point that Congress attempted to aid the mining industry. It first authorized the RFC to make loans to recognized and established corporations, individuals, and partnerships engaged in the business of mining, milling, or smelting of ores in June, 1934, limiting such authority to loans adequately secured, the security to consist of mineral acreage. The requirements of the law were stringent and of the 252 requests for loans received up to June 1, 1935, 35 were authorized.

ZINC, manganese, and aluminum received attention at the two nonferrous metallurgy sessions at the Annual Meeting. L.P. Davidson, general superintendent of the rebuilt Monsanto zinc plant, described its operation, which reflects Polish practice and is really a combination of electrolytic, Waelz, and retort procedure. Briefly, it embraces leaching of roasted concentrate with sulphuric acid, electrolysis of sulphate solution using Tainton lead-silver anodes with ?goulac? added to the electrolyte, treatment of tailing in Waelz kilns, and retorting of the recovered zinc oxide, casting furnace dross and residues. Recovery is good, equipment and maintenance costs low. Ferrate zinc that might be lost in the electrolytic process appears to be recovered as oxide in the Waelz treatment.

(Canal zone meeting, November, 1910.) A DISTINGUISHED engineer, the active head of a large mining company, has said that surveying attains the dignity of a profession only in the hands of a few men-the few who know how to keep notes that will be understood by even a novice without further word of explanation. Of all mine-records, survey notes are perhaps the most important. The maps made from them serve as a working-guide, and as framework for other data ; and when, from any cause, access to underground workings is shut off, the surveyor's record often becomes invaluable. So seldom does a surveyor have a chance to check underground surveys by making a closure, that he is compelled to rely on the precision of each step of his work for the accuracy of the final result. When data are fully recorded on the spot, the notes, even in the hands of second parties, become evidence of the care and precision with which the surveying was done. It is worth a great deal to be able to pick up the work of a former surveyor where it was left o$; and to be able to carry it forward without retracing from the beginning. The purpose of this paper is to describe the survey-note system of a mine now under my direction, in which underground surveys had to be relied upon entirely for the proper division of rich ore-bodies between neighbors, thereby placing a premium on accurate surveying and permanent records. In survey-work, it soon turns out that paper is the least item of expense, and that little is gained by trying to economize note-book space. For many purposes it is best to record notes on cards or loose-leaves, which may be left in the office at the end of the day's work, and need not be carried into the mine again, there to become smeared with grime and grease. A REVIEW of process metallurgy of iron and steel during 1944 in many ways reflects the political and military developments of the year. Early in 1944 the tremendous wartime emergency expansion program was virtually completed and the industry directed its efforts to maintaining maximum production wherever needed. The vigorous production programs inaugurated to support the Normandy invasions did not persist as Allied armies approached Germany. General public apathy which developed with the prospect of an early ending of the European fighting was reflected in a general relaxation in armament programs. Toward the end of the year, as the prospect of a prolonged war became real, the entire program revived considerably and the need for steel became acute. Between January 1940 and October 1944 more than 12,400,000 tons had been added to the nation's steelmaking capacities, and over 12,700,000 tons added to the blast-furnace facilities. The total cost of this enormous program was more than two billion dollars. By July 1, 1944, total steelmaking capacity had exceeded 94,000,000 tons, with blast-furnace capacity rated at 68,400,000. Annual steel production, which was 88,900,000 tons in 1943, increased slightly during the past year and was estimated at 89,500,000. Production of pig iron also increased somewhat from 61,800,000 tons in 1943 to an estimated output of 62,500,000 in 1944. This review deals with a few of the numerous factors involved in maintaining the wartime iron and steel program at the level necessary to accomplish this enormous output.

The influence of the stress dependence of the dislocation density on the overall stress dependence of The steady-state creep rate is discussed. Experimental measurements of dislocation densities and creep rates jor an Fe-3.1 pct Si alloy tested over a wide range of stress are presented which indicate a close correlation between the two quantities. EXPRESSING the stress dependence of high-temperature steady-state creep rates has been the subject of numerous investigations over the past decade. From these investigations have emerged a few general equations which fit most of the available data reasonably well. Garofalo 1 has proposed that for a wide range of stress and temperature the creep rate, i, can be expressed by a relationship of the form: where A, ß, and n are temperature-dependent and is the applied stress. Eq. [I] gives a stress dependence of a at low stresses and exp(nßo) at high stresses, both consistent with experimental observation where n = 5. A number of other investigatorshave proposed a similar expression where: where m and w are in general functions of temperature. Theoretical justification for Eqs. 111 and [2J comes from two different approaches, theories based on dislocation glide3-5 and theories based on the balance between work-hardening and recovery.' Dislocation glide theories predict where p is the mobile dislocation density and V is the activation volume. In order for Eq. [3] to predict a on stress dependence at low stresses with n = 5, it is necessary for p to be a strong function of stress, about proportional to u3 or u4.436 Recovery models of creep start with the general expression:' where r is the recovery rate and h is the work-hardening rate, and then employ a detailed model to determine the stress dependencies of r and h. As example, weertman2 has described a model based on pile-up hardening which results in an expression similar to Eq. [2] with m = 2 and p = 2.5. A recent, seemingly more general approach suggested by McLean is to use Friedels dislocation network growth expression to calculate the stress dependence of r. This model predicts r = p 3,2 and, as h is taken to be a relatively weak function of stress, the stress dependence of i should be about proportional to p3, 2. Once again, it is required that p be a strong function of stress to yield i This recovery model is by no means complete as the stress dependence of network growth is calculated in the absence of an applied stress meaning that r should probably be a stronger function of stress than given by p3, 2 and also some recent work by Mitra and McLean8 suggests that the stress dependence of h may be as large as Because of the importance of the stress dependence of p in determining the overall stress dependence of the strain rate it seems reasonable to examine this relationship in some detail. BaCKOFEN, Avery, and Turner have shown"2 that the large tensile elongation in superplastic metals is correlated with a high strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress. At present, the reported superplastic materials are complex eutectic or eutectoid systems with a large solubility range in at least one of the terminal phases. This note describes the behavior of a solid-solution alloy (at 22°C)5,= Sn-1 wt pct Bi, which has been processed in order to produce a fine grain size.2,3,6 The chill-cast, 1/2-in.-diam ingot was homogenized for 1 week at 130°C, extruded at O°C to 0.083 in. diam, quenched within 15 sec, and stored at -196°C. Samples were warmed to room temperature 16 hr prior to mechanical testing or metallography. During tension testing at room temperature, it was found that the flow stress reached a steady-state value which depended on the imposed elongation rate and was independent of strain to an error of about ±5 pct. In Fig. 1 is plotted log a vs log e where a is the measured steady-state flow stress and i the imposed strain rate. These quantities were calculated using "instantaneous" area and length to an accuracy in the sample diameter of ±5 x 10-4 in. The log a-log 1 curve is sigmoidal. The strain-rate sensitivity, which may be given by d log old log 6,' has a maximum value of about 0.48 between i = 5 x 10-4 and 5 x 10-3 per min. The value is well above frequently measured values for metals at creep temperatures (0.1 to 0.3) and comparable to the rate sensitivity for Pb-Sn solder: which has been shown to be superplastic.2,3 Note, however, that below or above the strain rate of 10-3 per min the rate sensitivity of Sn-1 pct Bi decreases and at high rates is more nearly like that of conventional metals. The grain size of this material is relatively uniform, Fig. 2, and may be specified by an average linear intercept i.' Grain growth occurs at room temperature but after 16 hr, L = 5. Tensile elongation was measured on finer-grain-size specimens, which had been at room temperature 15 min prior to testing. After 15 min, the samples are fully recrystallized. Three strain rates, 5 x 10-3, 10-2, and 2.5 x 10-2 per min, were employed for which the measured elongations varied from 425 to 500 pct. These results would seem to justify the term superplastic, applied to this alloy, although the ductility is inferior to that of the Sn-Bi eutectic.3 The Sn-1 pct Bi alloy, which is a single-phase material with equiaxed, fine grains, is an excellent one on which to make an estimate of the Nabarro-Herring9 creep rate. According to the model of Avery and Backofen2 a substantial part of the deformation must be accomplished by N-H creep in the strain rate-temperature regime in which d log a/d log 1 = 0.5. The maximum N-H creep rate is given by9 L2kT where v is the atomic volume and D the self-diffusion coefficient. For this test v = 3.O x 10-23 cu cm, D = 1.4 e-23,300/RT = 2.5 x 10-l7 sq cm per sec,7 L = 5x 10+4 cm, T = 295°K, and a = 2000 lb per sq in. = 1.38 x 10' dyne per sq cm. The calculated creep rate is E= 4 x 10-11 per sec which may be compared with the measured creep rate at this stress, Fig. 1, of 6.7 x 10-5 per sec. The N-H creep rate is seen to be negligible. Earlier consideration2 of this question was in error because incorrect diffusion coefficients were used. The assistance of R. R. Russell in metallography is acknowledged gratefully.

The effect oj unidirectional solidification upon the microstructural, crystallographic and mechanical characteristics of high -purity A1-A13Ni eutectic a1loy specimens has been investigated. varying the growth rate caused the morphology of the Al3Ni phase to gradually change from platelets to rods. In addition, the effect of increasing the rate of planar liquid-solid interlace movement is to decrease the Al3Ni rod diameter and inter-rod spacing. The platelets and rods grow approxinlately parallel to each other and are aligned in a faulted substructure. A single unique crystallographic relationship hetween the A1 and ASNi phases was found and may he descrihed as : interface {001} Al3Ni {331} Al and growth direction <010>Al3Ni || <110> Al The platelet interlace and the aligned rows of rods are both uniquely defined by the above statements. Alignment of the Al3Ni phase by unidirectional solidification has given rise to a threefold increase in strength over that exhibited by specimens with an as-cast microstructure. These results illustrate the possible use of this eutectic alloy as a zohisker -reinforced structure. It has been demonstrated by Winegard et al.,1 Kraft and Albrighht,2 Chilton and winegard,3 Chad-wick,4 Yue,5 Tiller,6 and others that a planar liquid-solid interface may be established in binary eutectic alloys by proper control of heat flow during the solidification process. The unidirectional movement of such an interface results in a eutectic mi-crostructure consisting of an essentially parallel array of the two phases over an entire ingot. Two dominant phase micromorphologies have been produced using this technique: that of substantially parallel alternating lamellae of each phase or long thin parallel rods of one phase imbedded in a continuous matrix of the other phase. While not all eutectics can be controlled in this manner, it has been shown that a "normal" eutectic may, under properly controlled conditions of purity, liquid and solid thermal gradients, and solidification rate, be forced to solidify with essentially parallel phase particles. Kraft and Albright2 have demonstrated that, when the growth rate is too rapid or when the thermal gradient in the liquid at the growing interface is too low, a layer of constitutionally supercooled liquid, formed by impurity build-up, will stabilize a cellular rather than a planar interface. The unidirectional movement of the cellular interface forms the macrostructure of eutectic colonies.7 Chilton,3 Chadwick,4 and Tiller,&apos; studying eutectics of zone-refined Pb-Sn, A1-CuAl2, Zn-Sn, and Cd-Zn systems, noted that in the absence of impurities a planar interface is stabilized even when rapidly solidified. Although it is generally agreed that impurities break down a planar interface to form the eutectic-colony macrostructure, at present the origin of the varying micromorphologies (i.c., plates or rods) in a given normal eutectic alloy is not completely understood. Tiller8 has predicted that the micromor-phology produced may be dependent on solidification rate (i.e., at fast rates a rodlike structure is preferred whereas at slow rates a lamellar structure should form), and also suggested that rod formation may be favored at large phase-volume ratios. yue5 has experimentally verified Tiller&apos;s prediction in the eutectic Mg-Mg17Al12 by observing a lamellae-to-rod transition with increasing growth rate where the phase-volume ratio was approximately 2.3:1. However, Hunt and chilton9 more recently unidirec-tionally solidified over a wide range of growth velocities six different eutectic systems with phase-volume ratios between 12:l and 2.7:1 and observed no lamellae-to-rod transition. chadwickl0 has proposed that the change in micromorphology in some eutectic alloys is due entirely to the presence of impurities and further states that the lamellar structure is the characteristic structure of pure eutectic alloys even when the phase-volume ratio is as great as 12:l. Kraft11,12 has shown that the parallel lamellae in certain eutectic alloys assume a unique crystallographic relationship during unidirectional growth. This preferred crystallography may be developed

[3], the coefficients a and b being equal to so and (s8?so)/?c or n(s8?so), respectively. Confirmation of the relationship noted above was provided by fitting experimental stress-strain data5 for 304 stainless steel (total strain from 0.072 to 1.15) at room temperature at a true total strain rate of 4 x 10-3 sec-1 to Eqs. [I] and [3]. In this study nonlinear regression analyses were used to evaluate the equation constants. The results of this evaluation are presented in Table I. When these constants are used in Eqs. [I] and [3] the curves obtained are coincident. It will also be noted that the value of n is equal to YE,, the value of a is equal to so, and the value of b is equal to (s8 - so)/Ec. These equalities are illustrated in Table I where the Voce constants in parentheses were calculated from a, b, and n values. Excellent agreement is seen to exist. It is concluded, therefore, that the Voce equation is, indeed, identical to the linear expression involving generalized strain. In applying the generalized strain concept to stress-strain data, it has been noted3 that data within what was termed the transition region (first few points in the plastic flow region) must be excluded from the analysis in order to obtain the linearity in Eq. [3]. A similar exclusion applies in the use of the Voce equation since an expression which would describe the strain-hardening region would usually be found to be not too effective in the elastic-plastic fillet2 which connects the elastic line to the strain-hardening region. These considerations further substantiate that Eqs. [I] and [3] do indeed describe identical behavior. Note added in proof. Since this manuscript was submitted for publication, correspondence with Professor S. R. Davies, University of Edinburgh, (of Ref. 3) indicated that his associates have also confirmed the identity between the Voce equation and the generalized strain concept. It is sometimes desirable to obtain a small grain size in super-purity metals. Unfortunately, the absence of impurities, the low recrystallization temperatures, and the low activation energies for boundary motion result in rapid growth of relatively few grains when conventional recrystallization practices are used. For example, Arajs et al.1 were unable to obtain a mean grain diameter less than about 0.4 mm in iron containing 38 at. ppm of impurity. The <1 at. ppm purity range in many modern superpurity metals results in yet larger limiting grain sizes. It is the purpose of this communication to describe a technique by which mean grain diameters as small as 30 µ have been produced in aluminum having an impurity content < 0.5 at. ppm. The technique should be applicable to superpurity metals other than aluminum and has potential applications to grain refinement of commercial alloys. The necessary and sufficient requirements for production of a small grain size are as follows: a) a large number of potential nucleating sites must be created randomly within the cold worked material, b) sufficient thermal energy must be provided at a rate that will simultaneously activate a large fraction of the potential nuclei, and c) the grain growth must be stopped shortly after grain impingement.&apos; A high density of potential grain nuclei may be cre-

The use of alkyl acid phosphates and their alkali salts as collectors for the uranium minerals brannerite and uranothorite was investigated. In particular a detailed flotation study was carried out using isooctyl acid phosphate as a promoter. Tests were conducted on an Elliot Lake ore analyzing 0.11% U 3 O 8, chiefly as brannerite, and approximately 9% pyrite. Pyrite was floated with conventional reagents; the flotation of brannerite from the sulfide tails was studied to determine the optimum pH and pulp density to employ with isooctyl phosphate. 4 uranium recovery of over 90% was possible with a selectivity index of 8.95 when these tails were floated at 17% solids and a pH of 1.7. The effect of various modifying agents was also investigated. Aluminum sulfate, lactic acid and sodium silicate improved the selectivity of collection yielding selectivity indices of 9.5 to 11.5. Ferric chloride was found to be a depressant for brannerite. A Bancroft ore which analyzed 0.13% U308, and contained uranothorite was also amenable to flotation using isooctyl acid phosphate. The composite uranium concentrate obtained assayed 0.41% U308 at a recovery of 95.3% and a ratio of concentration of 3.24. Previous investigations1,2 on the flotation of brannerite, pitchblende, uraninite and/or uranothorite from various Canadian ores showed that fatty acids, including oleic acid and tall oils, petroleum sulfo-nates and alkyl acid phosphates, were suitable collectors for these uranium minerals. Additional work carried out by the Mines Branch in Ottawa on brannerite ores from the Elliot Lake area3 used the tall oil Acintol FA-1, or FA-2, as a collector. A recovery of 92% of the uranium in a concentrate which contained about 55% of the weight and assayed 0.2% U3O8 was obtained from a feed of 0.1% U308 in this latter instance. Eigeles et a1.4 carried out flotation on pitchblende ores and found that the most promising results were obtained with alkyl acid phosphates and their alkali salts as collectors. Within the homologous series of alkyl phosphates, the best flotation characteristics were displayed by isooctyl phosphates. Further, isooctyl phosphate derivatives were much less sensitive to hardness forming salts than oleic acid, enabling all flotation tests to be made with tap water. This paper describes tests employing alkyl acid phosphates for the flotation of ores containing brannerite and uranothorite. The flotation work described herein was conducted in conjunction with the development of a leaching process for Elliot Lake, Ontario, brannerite ores. In this process pyrite in the ore was concentrated by flotation and roasted, providing sulfur dioxide which was used to produce sulfuric acid in situ in a liquid-solid extraction process. A 40% conversion to sulfuric acid was indicated at a leaching temperature of 80°C; this resulted in the extraction of 93% of the total uranium after a contact period of 6 hr. A rotary kiln was used as a leaching vessel. Preconcentration by flotation was studied in conjunction with the above process to reduce the bulk of solids for leaching and, consequently, capital expenditure. The materials and methods used in this study will be described initially. Then the results will be presented in two sections, the first dealing with the brannerite ore, and the second with the uranothorite. Finally an economic analysis of the results on the brannerite material will be made. MATERIALS AND METHODS The two ore samples examined were from uranium-producing mines. One was a brannerite ore, a uraniferous quartz pebble conglomerate from the Elliot Lake area, which contained 0.11% U3O8, 4.3% S and 4.5% total Fe. Mineralogical studies of similar samples indicated the presence of quartz, microcline, sericite, pyrite and minor quantities of rutile, pyrrho-tite and zircon. The other ore was from a biotite-rich pegmatite in the Bancroft area; feldspar, quartz and biotite formed the major gangue components. HEALTH and safety in the mining and allied industries of the United States have unquestionably been progressing, particularly during the past three or four years, even though the progress has been anything but great in some branches of these industries. Statistical data to support this statement are readily available as to safety, but similar health data are unfortunately not available. In coal mining the rate of occurrence of fatal accidents per million tons of coal produced for the ten-year period 1911.20 inclusive was 4.27; this rate was 3.84 in 1930, .3.31 in 1931, 3.36 in 1932, and 2.69 (tentative) in 1933. In metal mining, the-rate of occurrence of fatal and- non-fatal injuries per .thousand 300-day workers (calculated) was 224.36 for- the same ten-year period. This fell slowly until after 1929 when it was 203.14, dropping to 170.78 in 1930, to 142.09 in 1931, to 138.46 in 1932, and to 155.13 in 1933. Here, again,-the real progress began in 1931 though the rate in 1930 was not particularly bad. Haemers (Ghent University, Belgium)—The authors claimed "the results of their work indicate that the metals can be arranged in a sulfation series similar in its application for selective sulfation tot the electromotive series for displacement of metals from solution". The series as stated in decreasing order for tendency of SO3 give up, is the same as that stated by free energy diagrams. Indeed, the degree of stability of a sulfate is measured by the free energy of sulfate formation out of the corresponding metal oxide and SO3. The more negative the value of the free energy (-DG) the greater the stability of the sulfate. As a second consequence this statement results in a relative aptitude for capture of SO3 by each metal oxide when brought in contact with the sulfate of other metals. iV preliminary X-ray and metallographic survey of the ternary system Bi-In-Te revealed that the following isopleths could form quasibinary systems: InTe-Bi, InTe-InBi, InTe-BizTe3, and InzTe3-Bi2Te3. The nature of the InTe-Bi phase diagram was established by Bologna and Peretti.&apos; This article presents the results of an investigation of the InTe-InBi system by thermal analysis, X-ray methods, and metallographic examination. The bismuth and tellurium were bought from the American Smelting and Refining Co. The tellurium had the following spectrographic analysis: 0.0001 pct Mg, 0.0001 pct Si, 0.0001 pct Fe, 0.0002 pct Al, and 99.999+ pct Te (by difference). The bismuth assayed: 0.0001 pct Mg, 0.0001 pct Pb, 0.0001 pct Fe, 0.0001 pct Cu, and 99.999+ pct Bi (by difference). The indium was obtained from the Indium Corp. of America and contained 0.002 pct Cu, 0.006 pct Pb, 0.01 pct Sn, 0.01 pct Zn, and 99.97+pct In. The flotation chemistry of the commercial INCO matte separation process was investigated. The slow cooling of Bessemer converter matte forms discrete phases of Cu2S and Ni3S2 and a Cu-Ni alloy. After magnetically removing the alloy, the Cu2S and Ni3S2 are separated by flotation at pH 12.4 (saturated lime) using diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. DPG has been used exclusively in this flotation process because of its unusual selectivity for copper minerals. The surface product resulting from chemisorption of DPG onto theCu2S was identified as the double salt CU(DPG)2SO4.CU(DPG)2(OH)2. The adsorption followed Langmuir behaviour up to a monolayer coverage. In the absence of DPG, the rapid adsorption of oxygen by Cu2S in flotation pulps was observed. The surface product was identified as the insoluble basic copper sulfate CuS04.3Cu(0H)2 with the production of sulfate ion. In the presence of DPG, the oxidation reaction appears to be suppressed. The frothing properties of DPG and commercial frothers were compared. DPG is not a powerful frother. Batch flotation tests confirmed that DPG is a highly selective collector when compared to most sulfhydryl collectors.

ALL types of commercial phosphate rock produced throughout the world contain fluorine in quantities ranging from approximately 0.4 to 1.3 per cent in the Curacao and Christmas Island phosphates to 3.1 to 4.2 per cent in the phosphates of the United States and North Africa1. For a given type of rock, the fluorine content is usually roughly propor-tional to the phosphorus content. SIGNIFICANCE OF FLUORINE IN PHOSPHATE ROCK On the basis of chemical and X-ray diffraction studies, Hendricks and co-workers2 concluded that fluorapatite, Ca10F2(P04)6, is the essential phosphatic constituent of the commercial types of domestic phosphate rock. On the other hand, Bredig and co-workers3 have recently advanced the opinion, also based on X-ray diffraction studies, that the mineral phosphates usually contain carbon dioxide in the apatite lattice, and that the phosphate rocks of. the United States are really fluorcarbonate apatites. However, the domestic types of phosphate rock do not seem to differ greatly from coarsely crystalline fluorapatite in their behavior toward chemical reagents in general, and for the purpose of this paper it will suffice to consider fluorapatite as being the essential phosphatic constituent of these types of rock.

A CHAPTER of appealing interest was added to the industrial history of the Southwest early in June, when the War Production Board gave final approval to the erection of a blast furnace, a battery of coke ovens, an ore-beneficiation plant, and other facilities for the production of pig iron in northeastern Texas, just north of the East Texas oil field. For many years the people of Texas and adjoining states have cherished the ambition and desire that eventually an iron and steel industry drawing upon local mineral resources would be established to serve Southwestern markets. The existence in this vicinity of valuable deposits of iron ore, limestone, and coking coal has been known in a general way for many years, and efforts have been made from time to time to use them in the production of iron. The present development promises to bring to realization the dreams of the men who have visualized what the establishment of this basic industry would mean to the region.

A SYMPOSIUM on current. conditions in Mexico, particularly in the oil and mining industries, was a most successful feature of the May meeting of the New York Section of the A.I.M.E. Heath Steele, vice-president of The American Metal Co.. Ltd., with an intimate knowledge of Mexico gave the principal address, and asked that his analysis of the present situation he regarded neither as an endorsement of Mexico&apos;s policy nor as the criticism of a disgruntled operator. To explain the .attitude of the great mass of the Mexican people towards recent developments, he first described briefly the political, social, and religious beliefs and customs of tile Mexican Indian. In spite of their contact with foreigners these beliefs and customs have remained unchanged throughout many generations. The old communal spirit and the idea of common ownership of the land still persist especially in the rural districts and villages; the old custom of a council for local self-government is reflected in the present-day labor committee.
