The oil industry in the Soviet Union closed the 1929-1930 operating year fulfilling its assigned program. During this period of time, however, no basic improvements were noted within the industry. A careful study of the conditions indicates that disorganization in most branches increased continually; that supply and transportation problems are approaching a state of breakdown; that labor problems become increasingly difficult and that the estimates for 1931-1933 period are too large. The production of all Russian fields increased by 27,200,000 bbl., as compared with the 1928-1929 operating year, while the next year's program anticipates a further increase of 46,000,000 bbl., and the 1933 plans call for an amazing total of 330,000,000 bbl., or over 150 per cent, more than the production of the operating year that has just closed. Table 1 shows petroleum production in Russia by individual areas and fields from 1916, and furnishes estimates for the three coming years, which constitute the balance of the Five-year plan. A brief analysis of Table 1 will show that the Soviet Planning Commission anticipates that the fully developed fields of the Apsheron-Baku will double their production by 1933, .as compared with 1929-1930, and that the old Grozny fields, which are already showing a tendency to decline, will increase their output from 44,110,000 bbl. in 1929-1930 to 68,000,000 bbl. in 1933. Furthermore, in 1933 new fields are slated to produce not less than 100,000,000 bbl., a figure which even under most favorable conditions in Russia would be hard to achieve. Of course, Russia could develop such production, because the country is not lacking in the prospective reserves, but the transportation in the country today (as in the past.) is in such poor shape that neither the supply of a gigantic oil industry nor the movement of its products is within the realm of possibility. Table 1 shows the future estimated crude oil production as required by the Five-year plan, and also as reasonably estimated by the author, taking into account natural declines in old fields, slow development of new areas and the deficiency of the transport. While in the 1929-1930 operating year only two major fields underproduced (Surakany and Maikop) and the plan was fulfilled to the extent of 97.4 per cent., the production of the last three months of 1930 ("Shock Quarter") indicated

The uniaxial deformation of thermally ordered and disordered polycrystalline Cu3Pt was studied by means of the X-ray line - broadening analysis according to Warren and Averbach and the extension of this analysis to ordered fcc materials by Mikkola and Cohen. Because of the heat treatment history, extinction had a pronounced effect on the X-ray spectra of ordered and disordered C%Pt at small plastic strains. After an appropriate correction for extinction, the long-range order in thermally ordered ChPt was found to decrease at a slow constant rate with plastic strain. Furthermore, the antiphase domain probability increased at a constant rate to 17.5 pct strain. The effective particle size behavior indicated that the stacking fault energy is lower in ordered than in disordered Cu3Pt. Analysis of the stress-strain curves shouled that ordered Cuzt has a slightly lower yield Point but a much higher work-hardening rate than disordered Cu3Pt. THE presence of long-range order in a solid-solution alloy has a marked effect on its mechanical properties. While this effect has been known qualitatively for many years, it was not until recently that detailed investigations have been performed to determine the exact role long-range order plays in this strengthening mechanism. The development of an advanced, quantitative. X-ray diffraction analysis by Warren and Averbachl and the extension of this analysis to the L1, type super lattice by Mikkola and cohen2 have greatly accelerated research in this field. The research reported in this paper consisted of two primary phases. The first phase was to determine the effect of long-range order on the tensile properties of polycrystalline Cu3Pt. This objective was accomplished by comparing the stress-strain behavior of thermally ordered CusPt to that of thermally disordered CusPt. The second phase of the research was to determine the difference between the atomic arrangements in thermally ordered and thermally disordered Cu3Pt as a function of uniaxial deformation and thereby gain a deeper insight into the mechanism by which long-range order affects the tensile properties. This second objective was accomplished by applying the Warren-Averbach method of peak profile analysis to the X-ray diffraction patterns obtained from ordered and disordered Cu3Pt after given amounts of uniaxial deformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The Cu3Pt was prepared by vacuum melting and casting. After a homogenization anneal, the ingot was cold-rolled to sheet form. Two tensile specimens with gage sections of 2.50 by 0.500 by 0.115 in. were carefully machined from the sheet. The specimens were polished with a final step of 600-grit paper to insure smooth diffracting surfaces. Finally, one specimen was heat-treated to yield an average grain diameter of 0.016 mm and an initial degree of long-range order, S, of 0.825. The other specimen was water-quenched from above the critical temperature, 645"C, to yield an average grain diameter of 0.017 mm and zero long-range order. The heat treatment history of each specimen is shown in Table I. The tensile tests were performed utilizing a Research Incorporated Model 900.95 Materials Testing System. This unit employs a closed-loop feedback system which maintains a constant strain rate through an extensometer clipped to the gage section of the tensile specimen. A strain rate of 1.32 i0.02 x 10"4 sec-' was employed in testing both specimens. In the X-ray diffraction analysis, a General Electric XRD-5 diffractometer equipped with a pulse-height analyzer set for 90 pct efficiency was employed. The goniometer speed selected was 0.2 deg, 20, per min. Filtered Cu radiation was used for all peaks and all peaks were chart-recorded. Because of nonuni-form grain size. it was necessary to spin the specimens during X-ray analysis in order to obtain reproducible integrated intensities. The spinning rate was 2000 i100 rpm. The application of the Warren-Averbach method of peak broadening analysis to a diffraction pattern is very time consuming if done manually. In this research, the calculations involved were performed with the aid of a computer program by wagner.3 As reported by Wagner, the program is written in Fortran TV computer language. It was modified to Fortran I1 so as to be handled by the IBM 7072 computer at Van-derbilt University. In the X-ray diffraction analysis of uniaxially deformed Cu3Pt, the 100, 200. 400. 111, and 222 reflections were recorded from the initially ordered sample after 'plastic strains of 3.0, 6.0, 9.0, 12.0,

The solubility of graphite in CaO-S2O2-Al,O3 slags was measured by equilibrating slag samples with graphite crucibles and CO gas. Carbon contents as high as 2 ut pct were obtained in CaO-saturated, CaO-A1,O3 slags, and 1.3 wt pct in slags of the composition CaO.Si0,. Although the observed conditions for Sic formation were in agreement with those predicted from thermodynamic data, CaC, was found to form at a lower temperature than predicted frotn thermodynamic data. From measurements of the equilibrium carbon content as a function of CO Partial pressure, it was found that carbide ions dissolve in CaO-A12O3 melts with a valence of minus two. The carbon content increased with CaO concentration in Ca0-Al,O3 melts and increased with SiO, content along the CaO'AlO3-CaOSi0 join in the ternary system. When solid CaC2 was added to CaO-A12O3 and CaO-SiO2-A12O3 slags, it was found that one of the oxides in the slag was reduced by the carbide (Al2O3 in the forrner and SiOz in the latter). In electric furnace steelmaking, a double-slag practice is frequently used to meet alloy specifications. Initially a flush slag, which is oxidizing in nature, is used to remove phosphorus and carbon from the steel bath. Later in the refining period, the flush slag is replaced by a highly reducing carbidic slag. When calcium carbide is formed in or added to a finishing slag, the slag is effective as a desulfurizing agent and also permits alloying elements such as chromium, vanadium, and tungsten to be added to the slag in the form of oxides. The oxides are readily reduced by calcium carbide, thereby minimizing the use of expensive ferroalloys. More work has been done on the thermodynamics of silicon carbide in slags than on calcium carbide. Baird and alor' and Kay and alor' determined the free energy of formation of Sic by measuring the partial pressure of CO in equilibrium with solid silica, silicon carbide, and graphite. Using a similar technique, they determined SiOz activities in CaO-SiOz and Ca0-Si0,-A1203 slags. Rein and chipman3 also determined the free energy of formation of Sic using slag-metal equilibrium measurements. A literature survey has uncovered only one experimental study of the behavior of CaC, in slag systems. Shanahan and cooke4 report the results of some preliminary experiments on the solubility and stability of CaC, in a CaO-A1,03 and a Ca0-Si0-A1,03 slag at a temperature of about 1500". The carbon solubility as CaC, in a slag containing 50 pct CaO and 50 pct A1203 was reported to be 0.6 pct. They also review earlier work on the binary CaO-CaC, system. A eutectic exists in this system, but various investigators disagree on the eutectic temperature and composition. eal has given an explanation for carbide furnace erruptions in terms of the thermodynamic properties of CaC,; his analysis is not based on experimental data, but on compiled data for the free energies of formation of CaC, and CO.' , These data for steel-making temperatures are all extrapolated from the results of low-temperature measurements. In the experiments described in this paper, slag samples were equilibrated with graphite crucibles and with mixtures of CO and argon or with CO gas at 1 atm total pressure for measurement of the carbon solubility. Most of the work was done on Ca0-A1203 binary slags, although in some experiments CaO-SiO, and Ca0-Si0,-A1,03 slags were used. EXPERIMENTAL Slag samples of the desired composition for the solubility measurements were obtained by blending pre-fused master slags. The master slags were prepared by fusing mixtures of reagent-grade CaC03 with either A1,03 or Si0, in a graphite crucible. The master slags were crushed, then decarburized in air in a muffle furnace at 1200O C. A schematic diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The source of carbon for the solubility meas-

The superconducting performmce of diffusion-processed Nb3Sn is influenced by its micro structure. High isotropic transverse current density may be achieved in this material by a process which forms a precipitate of ZrO, within the Nb3Sn. FOR an ideal type-I1 superconductor, little or no transport current can be carried in the mixed state; i.e., little or no transport current can be carried above the lower critical field H,,, where the field penetrates abruptly in the form of current vortices or fluxoids, even though full transition to the normal state does not occur until the upper critical field H,,.' Fortunately, nonideal type-I1 superconductors can be readily obtained and these carry large transport currents up to the upper critical field H. Both theoretical and experimental investigations have attributed this current-carrying capability for nonideal type-I1 superconductors to pinning of the fluxoid lattice by heterogeneities in the microstructure of the superconducting material. These heterogeneities may take the form of dislocations or dislocation clusters,2"5 grain boundaries: structural imperfections introduced by phase transformations; radiation damage,8"10 or precipitates.11"15 Nb3Sn formed by diffusion processing is a type-I1 superconductor. Heterogeneities are needed for high superconducting critical currents above H,,. This paper will cover: a) what the microstructure of diffusion-processed NbSn looks like; b) what changes in the microstructure take place when the system is doped with precipitates, and c) how these changes in microstructure influence the superconducting critical currents. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Samples. Diffusion processing was used to form the Nb3Sn. The procedure used was as follows: a) coat the surface of a niobium tape with tin; b) heat-treat this tape at a temperature above 930°C to form a layer of Nb3Sn at the Sn-Nb interface. Such a layer of NbsSn is shown in Fig. 1 The thickness of the NbsSn layer formed was controlled by the time and temperature of the heat treatment. The same general procedure was used for preparation of both undoped samples and samples doped with a precipitate. An additional step was included in the preparation of the doped samples which consisted of internal oxidation of zirconium to form ZrOn. The details of the doping process will be reported in a later paper. Sample Testing. The Nb3Sn tape samples were soldered to a copper or brass shunt. Current and voltage leads were then attached to the sample in the usual four-probe resistance measurement configuration. The sample was cooled to 42°K. In some cases it was cooled in the presence of a high magnetic field and in other cases with the field turned off. The results were the same for both cases. The samples were oriented in a configuration with field transverse to current but could be rotated such that the angle between the field vector and the wide side of the tape sample could be changed. Measurements up to 100 kG were done in a superconducting solenoid and measurements above 100 kG in a water-cooled copper magnet at the MIT National Magnet Laboratory. Once the test field was reached, the current in the sample was increased until voltage was detected across the sample. The critical current was taken as the current at which voltage was first detected in excess of background noise. In most cases this was 1 to 2 x 10~6 v for a— in.-wide sample carrying several hundred amperes with a in. separation between voltage leads and with a 10 "-ohm shunt resistance. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Microstructure. Examination of the microstructure of the undoped Nb3Sn shows rather large-diameter (1 to 2 columnar grains growing outward from the niobium surface toward the tin surface. As the layer is made thicker by longer diffusion times, these grains grow longer. Few new grains are started. Transmission electron microscopy shows little or no second-phase material within the bulk of the Nb3Sn layer. The microstructure of a diffusion-processed NbsSn layer changes quite drastically when the system is doped so as to form a precipitate within the NbsSn layer. Instead of large-diameter columnar grains of NbaSn forming, smaller-diameter (0.5 to 1 ) equiaxed grains of Nb3Sn decorated with the precipitate form. Fig. 2 shows a transmission electron micrograph of a Nb3Sn layer doped with zirconium oxide. This layer has been etched so that one may look between the grains

OelSEN and Maetz1 detected some 20 years ago the existence of a miscibility gap in iron oxide-CaO-P2O5 slags melted in iron crucibles at about 1400°C. Because of the importance of this system for the dephos-phorization of steel in the basic Bessemer process, equilibria between liquid iron and selected iron oxide-CaO-P2Q slags have been measured since by numerous investigators.2-5 When in equilibrium with metallic iron, the iron oxide of the slag is present mainly as FeO. In connection with oxygen-blowing steelmaking processes, it is useful to know the phase relations in the slag system at higher oxygen pressure, when major parts of the iron oxide are present as Fe2O3. This problem was investigated by Turkdogan and Bills7 by equilibrating the oxide mixtures contained in platinum crucibles with CO2-CO mixtures at 1550°C. It was found that increasing the Fe2O3 content decreases the composition range of the miscibility gap strongly so that the miscibility gap has almost disappeared at pco2/pco = 75. This result was refuted by the careful work of Olette et a1.,''' who equilibrated their slags with controlled Ha-H2-Ar gas mixtures. Their equilibrium measurements, at 1600°C and at oxygen pressures of 5 x 10"* and 10"5 atm, showed that the oxidation state of the iron has almost no influence on the formation of the miscibility gap. The present experiments were undertaken to check the previous results of Turkdogan and Bills. The experiments were performed at 1625°C in the strongly oxidizing atmosphere of air (PO2 = 0.20 atm) for which no experimental data are available. About 10 g of slag were melted in platinum crucibles and held at constant temperature for 1 hr. After equilibration, the crucible was rapidly pulled out of the furnace and cooled in air. The platinum crucible was removed from the sample. The two slag layers were carefully separated with a small diamond disc, and the surface of the top layer, which may have changed its oxidation state during cooling, was removed. The slags were crushed and analyzed chemically for CaO, P2O5, Fe2+, and Fetotal. The starting mixtures were prepared by sintering the desired amounts of reagent-grade 2CaO . P2O5 - H2O, CaCO3, and Fe2O3. Sintering and subsequent crushing were done three times to ensure homogenization. Molybdenum wire resistance heating was used. The furnace was provided with a recrystallized alumina reaction tube which was left open to air at the top. The temperature was controlled electronically. The reported temperature was measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple and is estimated to be accurate within +5°C. The composition of the equilibrated melts is given in Table I. For the graphical illustration of these quaternary slags the type of projection suggested by Trömel and Fritze10 was used. In this representation, Fig. 1, the composition point of a mixture within the tetrahedron Fe2O3-CaO-P2O5-FeO is projected into the Fe2O3-CaO-P2O5, triangle (triangle I) so that the direction of projection is parallel to the side FeO-Fe2O3, and into the triangle Fe2O3-P2O,-Fe0 (triangle 11) so that the direction of projection is parallel to the side CaO-P2O5, of the tetrahedron. The projected point has the coordinates wt pct CaO, wt pct P205, and wt pct (FeO + Fe2O3) in triangle I and wt pct FeO, wt pct Fe2O3, and wt pct (CaO + PzO5) in triangle 11. Both triangles are turned into the same plane around the Fe203-P20, side of the tetrahedron. An illustration of the projection of a quaternary point in the present system is shown in Fig. 1. The advantage of this type of projection is that all four components for an equilibrium curve can be read directly from the diagram. The present results are shown graphically in Fig. 2. Published data on the activity of carbon in binary and ternary austenite at 1000°C are reviewed. The composition variables are . The coefficient, Vj, has the value for substitutional elements but may be assigned a ualue -1 for silicon to effect a simplification on the mathematical treatment. The activity coefficient PC = is obtained from gas equilibrium data. For the ternary systems studied the Henrian activity coefficient is given by the expression: The principle advantage in cornparison with the analogous expression in terms of atom fractions is found in the fact that for most systems the final term and in many the last two terms are zero. Values of the interaction parameters are tabulated and the graphical comparison of the equation with experirt~ental data is sho,wn in several figures. The thermodynamic properties of the solid solution, austenite, are of considerable importance in the heat-treatment of alloy steels and in other aspects of ferrous metallurgy. Early studies embodied in the Fe-C diagram have been extended to include other binary and some ternary diagrams. Our best hope of obtaining a useful thermodynamic treatment of reactions in complex alloy steels will not be found in quaternary and quinternary phase diagrams but in determinations of activities and interaction relations among the several solute elements. The foundation for such a development was laid by smith' in his early studies of the activity of carbon in Fe-C alloys and his subsequent work on Fe-C-Si, Fe-C-Mn, Fe-C-Ni, and Fe-C-Co solid solutions.2"4 Other observers have also made noteworthy contributions and these will be discussed and correlated here in the light of a somewhat simplified mathematical treatment of solute interactions. Fe-C AT 1000°C In a recent review of the thermodynamic properties of binary Fe-C austenite it was shown that the simple mathematical treatment employed by smith' was capable of describing all the published results on this solution. The treatment utilizes the atom ratio, yc = nC/nF,, rather than the atom fraction. The activity of carbon is proportional to the equilibrium gas ratio, either measured on a scalk in which the activity of graphite is taken as unity or, alternatively, aC may be set equal to yc at infinite dilution. In either case the ratio aC/y = (PC, the activity coefficient. It was found that the experimental data of smith1 and those of Diin-wald and wagner; Bungardt, Preisendanz, and Lehn-ert,' and Scheil, Schmidt, and Wiinnings at temperatures of 800" to 1200° C as well as reliable data on the solubilities of graphite and cementite could be represented by the equation for which graphite is the standard state: The data on alloyed austenite have been obtained at 1000°C. For this temperature, the "Henrian" activity coefficient (which is unity at infinite dilution) is: FOr an interstitial solute such as carbon in austenite it has been shown by statistical mechanicsg that the activity in the infinitely dilute solution is proportional to the ratio of the number of lattice sites occupied by carbon to the number of yet unfilled lattice sites. A variable zz proportional to this ratio serves as a useful measure of concentration:" in which b is the number of lattice sites provided by each atom of solvent; in austenite b = 1. The Henrian activity approaches zz at infinite dilution and the ratio a is the activity coefficient. The effect of a change in concentration is then given by: It has been shown further that in some systems the derivative in Eq. [4] remains constant over a wide range of concentrations. In such a case second-order terms become negligible and the Henrian activity coefficients is:

THE safety data presented in this paper are based upon replies to a Questionnaire sent out to representative mining companies. The authors feel that it is a fair cross section of the milling industry, in that the 17 companies, of the United States and Canada, reporting on 22 mills, are scattered from the Hudson Bay to the Mexican border and from coast to coast. These data concern the accident records of the. various plants from 1939 to 1944, inclusive and the six years are divided into two periods. The first period (1939, 1940 and 1941) represents something of a normal operating condition. The second period (1942, 1943 and 1944) represents the period of time that was most affected by war con¬ditions. During the second period there was a high labor turnover, inexperienced workers were numerous, women replaced men in many kinds of work, a labor shortage existed more or less throughout the industry, and supervision was pushed for peak production. All of the companies reporting compiled their accident experiences for these six years in accordance with the standards set up by the American Standards Association (Engineering Societies Building, New York, N. Y.), consequently the tabulated data presented herein are comparable. The authors of this paper feel that the industry as a whole is greatly indebted to the personnel of the companies that furnished these data, which make this study possible for presentation. This survey covers a total exposure of 74,528,880 man-hours, with 105,471 man-days of lost time from 870 accidents. SAFETY RECORDS In Table I, the safety record is shown of the various mills reporting. The severity rate is usually conceded to be the most vital statistical figure in safety parlance, therefore the participating companies are listed in order of their severity rate for the combined six-year period, under size of organization. The table also shows the frequency rate as well as the frequency-severity ratio (F/S). As noted in Table 1, most of the companies suffered an increase in both severity and frequency rates during the second period; only six of the 22 enjoyed an improvement. From correspondence with the various plants, it seems that a few had very little labor shortage or turnover, and these were not greatly affected. A few plants, anticipating the situation, strengthened their training facilities and actually were able to show a better experience during the second period. This gives great credence to the value of organized training in any safety program. The frequency-severity ratio (F/S) shown in the last column of Table I offers

WITHOUT in any way detracting from the credit due those engineer-miners of copper who operate with power shovels, it may be said that compared with block-caving underground their work is simplicity itself. True enough, ingenuity and foresight of high order are required to lay out an open-cut operation to the best advantage; good organization and intelligent care and use of machinery are required to achieve minimum costs. But really successful undercut block-caving demands all this; and, in addition, it requires a conception and application of unseen natural forces that reflect a type of genius that is rare. Assuming that preparatory work has gained access to the orebody, mining of whatever kind consists essentially of three operations: 1. Breaking the ore "in place," as Nature left it, into pieces small enough for convenient handling. 2. Loading these pieces into some kind of a vehicle on wheels. 3. Transporting the broken ore to some central plant on the surface where the process of extracting the valuable metals can be commenced. In shovel mining, dynamite and steam or electric power are used-with remarkable efficiency, be it said-to accomplish each of these three processes. In underground-caving methods the old force of gravity is called upon to accomplish, in large part, processes 1 and 2. To do this with success is an artistic achievement of a sort. Put it another way. The earlier methods of underground mining constituted a translation of surface procedure to an underground theater. The ore was blasted and dug out in small quantities; in its place were put props, usually of timber, to prevent the caving of the rock above; and men toiled with

Al3Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum was found to exhibit good Charpy impact toughness and little notch sensitivity even though its room-temperature tensile elongation parallel to the whiskers is only 2 pct. This impact behavior was maintained d liquid nitrogen temperature (-196"C). It is postulated that this behavior is due primarily to the presence of the continuous aluminum matrix which provides sufficient 10calized ductility in the vicinity of the crack tip to absorb considerable energy from the advancing crack. The impact behavior of Al-Alni was found to be quite anisotropic. Of six orientations studied, the transverse orientation having the notch normal to the whisker axis was found to exhibit the lowest impact energy, whereas the transverse orientation having the notch parallel to the whisker axis was found to exhibit the highest impact energy. A significant differnce was noted between the impact behavior of material containing needlelike whiskers and that containing bladelike whiskers. Only two of the six orientations studied exhibited complete fracture for the material containing needlelike whiskers. On the other had, most of the specimens containing bladelike whiskers exhibited complete fracture. It was postulated that the bladelike whiskers block transverse flow, thus reducing the amount of plastic deformation ahead of the crack tip. One of the more significant advantages of composite materials is the prospect of combining high strength with toughness. In general, toughness is associated with materials which exhibit considerable ductility and can deform plastically in the presence of a stress concentration. Very strong materials which resist plastic deformation generally exhibit low toughness. At first glance, then, it would appear as though strength and toughness are mutually incompatible so that useful engineering materials would have to be a compromise between the two. One approach to the problem of combining the high intrinsic strength of ceramics with the toughness of metals was to mix them together to form a cermet. Unfortunately, the toughness of cermets was found to be rather disappointing. Whisker reinforcement of metals, however, appears to be a more promising approach. It has been demonstrated that whisker-reinforced metals produced by unidirectional solidification exhibit enhanced strength due to the presence of high strength nonmetallic whiskers. The total strain capacity of these composites in the direction of fiber alignment is limited to that of the fibers, the matrix being unable to carry the load once the fibers have failed. A characteristic, then, of whisker composites is low ductility in the direction of whisker alignment, on the order of a few percent elongation. This low elongation, which is usually associated with brittle behavior, should not be taken as an indication of low toughness. Such a material can exhibit significant ductility in directions other than parallel to the fibers7 and can therefore possess significant intrinsic toughness. Toughness in a fiber-reinforced metal is derived from several mechanisms. The first is due to the toughness of the matrix itself. A continuous ductile metal matrix can act as an effective crack arrest medium by undergoing localized plastic deformation. Cracks initiated from the surface of the composite or from a brittle fiber failure must travel through the matrix before reaching another brittle phase particle. A second crack arrest mechanism peculiar to fiber composites is due to the fact that, as a crack travels through the matrix and approaches a fiber, the plastic deformation ahead of the crack tip will result in loading of the fiber. This causes the matrix shear strength in the plastic zone to be apparently higher, thus extracting more energy from the crack and diverting the crack at an angle to the original direction of propagation. A third crack arrest mechanism occurs in fiber composites which exhibit a weak bond between fiber and matrix. The idea was proposed by Cook and Gordons that if a crack propagating transversely in a fiber composite were made to turn and run along the fibers by decohesion of the fiber-matrix bond, then toughness would be imparted by the blunting of the crack tip and the creation of new surfaces. The last mechanism, interfacial decohesion, is commonly noted in naturally occurring fiber composites such as wood, bone, and bamboo, and has been observed in man-made composites such as glass fiber-reinforced resins,g silica fiber-reinforced aluminum," laminated steel," and tungsten and silica fiber-reinforced electroplated copper.'' The first mechanism, crack arrest by plastic deformation in the matrix, has been noted in tungsten wire reinforced cast copper." The purpose of this investigation was to quantitatively assess the toughness of a whisker-reinforced metal as a function of orientation. Previous investigation considered only cracks propagating nominally perpendicular to the reinforcement. In this investigation, crack propagation in three mutually perpendicular directions as well as three intermediate orientations was investigated. The system chosen for study was the unidirectionally solidified A1-A13Ni eu-tectic alloy which has a microstructure consisting of 10 pct by volume of A13Ni whiskers in a matrix of aluminum This material exhibits two different kinds of whisker morphology, depending upon the rate at which it is solidified.' After the explosion in the Black Heath pit, that company sent to England for some experienced miners to reopen the mine. The results of their work in this vicinity are mentioned in an advertisement for pit hands by the Mid-Lothian Co., as follows: "PIT HANDS WANTED.-In consequence of reports having been circulated of the insecurity of hirelings in the Mid-Lothian Mines, the Company deem it proper to make known, that the mines have recently been opened, and that not the slightest explosion from gas has occurred; the workings were laid out and are now progressing, ° under a plan furnished by Messieurs Foster & Hall, .two distinguished English Colliers, sent over from England to reclaim the Pits of the Black Heath Company after the recent explosion of gas-and the present under ground operations are now conducted under the management of one of the English foremen left here by these gentlemen, and supervised by Mr. Wm. Hall, who has under his superintendence the Black Heath Company's Works at present. The skill and capacity of those gentlemen, is fully evinced in their skilful reclamation of the Black Heath Mines, and their present successful working of said Pits; and their confidence in the safety of the hands in the Mid-Lothian Mines, will be seen, by reference to the annexed extract from the Plan left by Messrs. Foster & Hall for laying out and working the Mid-Lothian Mines, and from the Certificate of Mr. William Hall, as to the manner in which that plan is carried into effect. This publication has been deemed proper, as the Company are now in want of some ten or fifteen additional able-bodied, active Pit-hands, on hire by the year, for which they will give the most liberal hire. The Company have not hitherto spared any labor or expense, deemed necessary to secure the absolute safety and comfort of the hands in their mines; nor is it designed in future to omit any thing that can add to the security of their own hands, or the hired laborers of other persons-indeed they can, with great propriety, say, as far as they have progressed, that no mines in this country exhibit stronger, if as strong, evidence of general safety. The Company will receive on hire, no hands who do not voluntarily enter their service -and they request of those having hands to hire out, to remember that they will want upon hire, successively, at intervals of every ninety days, some additional four or five hirelings during the year, or to purchase, progressively, that number of healthy, able-bodied young men. "Owners of slaves at a distance from the Coal Mines, would do well to give some attention to the subject. There is no place in this country where slave labor commands as much, where their general health is better, and where the treatment and contentment of the slaves are surpassed. It is true that within the last few years several disastrous accidents have occurred, but from the scientific and practical skill attracted to the mines, these accidents will be of rare occurrence, it is to be hoped. The adsorption density of dodecylammonium ions at the quartz-solution interface has been Theadsorptiondensitydetermined as a function of collector concentration and pH. A ten thoushasbeenandfold range of amine salt concentration was covered at neutral pH. Experimental results show that over a thousandfold concentration range at neutral pH, the adsorption density (I) is proportional to the square root of collector concentration. Except at high concentrations, I increases with increases with increasing pH, but in general this effect is surprisingly small. . , . . A critical pH curve has been established for the flotation of quartz with dodecylammonium acetate. The conditions along the flotation curve are correlated with the adsorption measurements. THE behavior of collectors at the mineral-solution interfaces is usually explained in terms of an ionic adsorption process. Through the distribution of collector ions between the solid surface and the- co-existing solution phase the mineral is believed to acquire a water-repellent surface coating. Quantitative adsorption studies have been made on simple flotation systems1-4 only within the last few years. Such investigations were made possible by the adoption of the radiotracer method of analysis. As a consequence of these studies a new parameter has been added to aid the understanding of the flotation process. The research investigation to be discussed in this paper was undertaken to obtain a better understanding of the behavior of a cationic-type collector. This objective was approached through the determination of the distribution of dodecylammonium acetate between the quartz-solution interface and the solution as a function of the collector salt concentration and pH. To bring this investigation to focus on the more practical aspect of flotation research, an attempt was also made to correlate the adsorption results with actual flotation tests. Quartz: A —100 mesh ground crystalline quartz was infrasized; the products of the third and fourth cones were mixed together and reserved for experimental purposes. This stock material was cleaned by leaching in boiling concentrated HC1. After leaching the quartz was rinsed with distilled water until the filtrate showed no trace of chloride ian. It was then washed several times and dried. The qwrtz had a specific surface of 1400 cma per g as deterhined by the krypton gas adsorption method. Collector: The distribution of dodecylammonium acetate between the quartz surface and the solution phase was determined by the radiotracer method of analysis with carbon 14 as the tracer element. The radioactive amine salt with C" synthesized into the hydrocarbon chain5 was supplied by Armour and Co. The tracer element was located adjacent to the polar group. The radioactive salt as received had a specific activity of about 0.14 mc per g. When desired, dilution of this activity was effected by addition of non-radioactive dodecylammonium acetate also supplied by Armour and Co. ........ All other inorganic reagents used in this research were of reagent grade. Conductivity water was used for making up all solutions. Adsorption Tests: Two different experimental methods were used. In the first, to be designated as the agitation method, a weighed amount of quartz and a measured volume of amine salt solution were agitated in a 100-ml or 50-ml glass-stoppered pyrex graduated cylinder. The cylinder was filled with solution up to the stopper, since erratic results were obtained when an air space was left over the suspension. Time of agitation varied from 1 to 2 hr. Preliminary tests at different agitation times showed that the amount adsorbed remained constant for all agitation times exceeding 1/2 hr. After this conditioning period, the solids were separated from the solution by filtration through a Buechner fritted-disk funnel. The solution was re-circulated 10 times or more to allow the fused silica disk to come to equilibrium with it. Determinations of the amount of amine adsorbed on the frit itself indicated that this amount was less than 10 pct by weight of the amine acetate abstracted by 10 g of quartz. The funnel with quartz covered by a thin layer of solution was then centrifuged for approximately 5 min, at which time the moisture content of the solids was reduced to about 5 pct by weight. The wet quartz was blown into a tared beaker, re-weighed and allowed to dry at room temperature. A final weighing was then made to determine the moisture content. The second experimental method, similar to the procedure adopted by Gaudinand Bloecher,' will be referred to as the column method. Two liters of solution were passed through a bed of quartz contained in a Buechner funnel attached to a pyrex separatory funnel by means of a ball and socket joint. Preliminary tests showed that increasing the volume of solution above 2 liters does not give a measurable increase in adsorption. From 4 to 4 1/2 hr were required for 2 liters of solution to pass through the column. The moisture content of the quartz was again reduced to a minimum by centrifuging. A slightly modified column apparatus was used for experimenting with alkaline amine solutions. The North Texas district incorporated in this paper corresponds with the Railroad Commission's District No. 9, and includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, and Young.† Table I,Oil and Gas Production in North Texas District, has been changed to conform with the nomenclature of pools designated by the Commission in order to facilitate compilation of the data, since most of the companies operating in the area are coming more and more to recognize one central authority in the matter of naming each new oil pool. No effort is being made to discuss the structural characteristics of the region, since it is generally known by oil men that most of the oil and gas comes from Pennsyl-vanian, with some of less importance from the Mississippian and Ordovician. Development during 1944 There were 1550 wells drilled during 1944, an increase of 450. Of this number, 677 were completed as oil wells, and 11 as gassers. Production increased 1,505,025 bbl., making the year's total 43,172,005 bbl. of oil having an average gravity of 40". Development generally, however, was somewhat disappointing. The 47 new pools, extensions, or new pay horizons in old fields, had a combined initial production of only 19,146 bbl. It is estimated that these wells added approximately 10,000,000 bbl. to the reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was in the Caddo conglomerate in the Hildreth pool, Montague County. During the year, 66 wells were completed as the result of three extensions, I to 136 miles west, northwest and north of the field. Young, Archer, and Clay were the most active counties. Eleven new potential - oil fields were developed in Young County, nine in Archer and nine in Clay. Outlook for 1945 In spite of the fact that exploration as a whole was disappointing in 1944, prospects for increased development are bright for 1945. At the close of last year, 2.1 geophysical crews were operating in the district, which, together with the Ohio Oil Company's No. I W. R. Ross, a wildcat Strawn discovery in King County, 1 1/2 miles beyond the west boundary of district 9, stimulated a lease play extending over four counties. The authors feel that it is a fair cross section of the milling industry, in that the 17 companies, of the United States and Canada, reporting on 22 mills, are scattered from the Hudson Bay to the Mexican border and from coast to coast. These data concern the accident records of the various plants from 1939 to 1944, inclusive and the six years are divided into two periods. The first period (1939, 1940 and 1941) represents something of a normal operating condition. The second period (1942, 1943 and 1944) represents the period of time that was most affected by war conditions. During the second period there was a high labor turnover, inexperienced workers were numerous, women replaced men in many kinds of work, a labor shortage existed more or less throughout the industry, and supervision was pushed for peak production. All of the companies reporting compiled their accident experiences for these six years in accordance with the standards set up by the American Standards Association (New York, N. Y.), consequently the tabu lated data presented herein are comparable. The authors of this paper feel that the industry as a whole is greatly indebted to the personnel of the companies that furnished these data, which make this study possible for presentation. This survey covers a total exposure of 74,528,880 man-hours, with 105,471 man-days of lost time from 870 accidents. Safety Records In Table I, the safety record is shown of the various mills reporting. The severity rate is usually conceded to be the most vital statistical figure in safety parlance, therefore the participating companies are listed in order of their severity rate for the combined six-year period, under size of organizatiori. From correspondence with the various plants, it seems that a few had very little labor shortage or turnover, and these were not greatly affected. A few plants, anticipating the situation, strengthened their training facilities and actually were able to show a better experience during the second period. Gentlemen.-The Institute was founded 54 years ago "with the object of promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals and the welfare of those employed in these industries by means of meetings for social intercourse and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications among its members and associates the information thus obtained," At least once a year it is well to take stock of our assets, review our performance and determine how well we are now carrying out the purposes of our Founders. There can be no question as to the work the Institute has done and is doing in promoting the arts and sciences in the fields of mining and metallurgy. One needs only to contrast the methods, the labor and the costs of a half century ago with those now to visualize how far we have gone in the development of accurate technology and sound economics in mineral and metal production. The great mines, mills and smelters of the present, handling individually thousands of tons per day, would' have been impossible except for the accumulation of knowledge, the development of theory, and the improvement in practice that has characterized the period since the foundation of the Institute. The United States has prospered in the last half century greatly, and this has been due not merely to the possession of great natural resources, but to these resources being reduced to possession and put to work. The absence of customs barriers and the freedom of trade across the whole width of this great continent has been an important factor in the growth of our wealth. Unrestricted interchange of goods has permitted each citizen to draw on the resources of the whole country. However, these are but subsidiary causes of prosperity. The free interchange of scientific and technical data, by making the whole body of facts and theory available to each worker, has made this quick and unrivaled development possible. In promoting this free trade in knowledge the Institute may claim a large place without fear of denial. The .72 volumes of TRANSACTIONS, the special volumes, the bulletins and the other publications that have been issued, include a store of knowledge of the arts and sciences related to the production and use of metals and minerals not duplicated elsewhere. Pvfoperties of rubidium and cesium are compared with those of other alkali metals. Methods for the preparation of rubidium and cesium metal are reviewed briefly, ad hazards and safety precautions required in handling rubidium and cesium metal are described. SimPle methods for handling laboratory quantities of elemental rubidium ad cesium under oil and under argon are illustrated. CESIUM and rubidium were both discovered by Bunsen and Kirchoff in the years 1860 and 1861. Cesium was discovered while Bunsen and Kirchoff were making a spectrographic study of spring water from Durkheim, Germany. It was the first element discovered by this technique. The element was given the Latin name "caesius" for sky blue because of the color it imparted to flames. Elemental cesium was first prepared by Setterberg in 1881 through electrolysis of a molten mixture of cesium and barium cyanides.' In 1861, Bunsen and Mirchoff discovered rubidium while making a spectrographic study of the alkali content of lepidolite ore from Saxony. Two prominent dark red lines appeared in the spectrum and so the element was named "rubidius" or dark red. In 1861 Bunsen and Kirchoff first prepared elemental rubidium through the electrolysis of molten rubidium chl~ride.~ The alkali metals are very similar in their chemical and physical properties. They are the most active metals, and all exhibit a single oxidation state of one. They are so reactive that they are never found in nature in the elemental state. The reactivity of he metals increases with atomic number. Rubidiurn and cesium ignite spontaneously in air and react explosively with water. This extreme reactivity makes necessary special equipment and techniques for the safe preparation and use of the metals. The cation: of Group IA can be separated from the metallic cations of other groups with relative ease, but the separation of the individual alkali cations is much more difficult because of their close chemical similarity. This close chemical and physical similarity of alkali metals can be inferred from the atomic radii, oxidation numbers, and ioni-zation potentials shown in Table I. A difficult but the most practical physical method of separating the elemental alkali metals from one another is by distillation. Only lithium has a boiling point sufficiently far-removed from the boiling points of the other alkali metals to make this method of separation feasible without elaborate and expensive equipment. This method is not used, however, for lithium because it possesses sufficient chemical dissimilarity from the other alkalies for it to be separated relatively easily as lithium hydroxide monohydrate or as lithium carbonate. THE past twenty-five years has been a period of unparalleled improvement in all lines of mining and metallurgical equipment, but probably none has undergone greater refinement and development than the vacuum filter. Beginning a quarter of a century ago, there has been steady advancement in the art of vacu-um filtration until today its use has become virtually standard practice for dewatering throughout the entire metallurgical industry as well as in important parts of the chemical and industrial processing fields. The credit for the first successful application of vacuum filtration 'at the Consolidated Mercury mines in Utah in 1902 undoubtedly belongs to George Moore. There, it is said, his filter reduced the loss of gold in the slime and sand from $1.25 to 40c. per ton. Successful applications were subsequently made by Mr. Moore at the Liberty Bell mines, Telluride, Colo., the Lundberg, Dorr &Wilson mill at Terry, S. D., and elsewhere. E. L. Oliver is generally credited with, having done the most to work out the necessary continuity of op-eration exemplified in the well-known continuous vacu-um filter which bears his name. Others made improve-ments also, but in my opinion all the new ideas advanced in recent years are modifications of the fundamental principles originated by the two pioneers, Moore and Oliver. Considerable interest has been shown recently in the new type of continuous internal-type vacuum filter which is associated with my own name1. In response to frequent inquiries regarding it and the steps which led up to its invention, I am giving herewith a brief account of the early history of this development and some of the more important installations which have been made during the last year or so. A. M. Nicholas (now deceased), an Australian engi-neer, conceived the idea, several years ago, of manu-facturing a continuous vacuum filter with the filter medium applied upon the inside of the drum, as con-trasted with existing drum filters in which the medium is applied externally. Nicholas recognized that a ma-chine of this type would be simpler than one with a tank and would overcome some of the difficulties en-countered with tank filters on certain classes of pulps, and he appreciated the value of having filtration take place in the same direction as the gravitational settle-ment of the solid particles in the pulp, the pulp being retained within the drum instead of being held against the outside surface. The ease of starting up after a shut down was likewise realized by Nicholas. It was tried in the United States, but was not entirely success-ful primarily due to mechanical defects.

The most important development in an otherwise colorless year in Colorado oil fields was the completion, late in 1933, of a well on Iles dome on the western slope of Colorado, with an initial production of 1100 bbl. of oil. No great amount of activity beyond the drilling of necessary offset wells is to be expected as a result of the completion of a well of this size because the acreage on Iles dome is closely held; there is no pipe line outlet other than to the Texas Company's small refinery at Craig, 24 miles distant; and the market for the oil is limited to the demands of sparsely settled communities in the high mountains. The Iles field is located on a large dome developed in Mancos shale of Cretaceous age, and having a closure of approximately 400 ft. The structure is highly faulted on the southern end. The first commercial oil well on this dome was completed by the Midwest Refining Co. on the south side of sec. 22-4N.-92W. Oil of 37" gravity was developed in Nancos shale at 2560 ft. and water in the Dakota sandstone at 2630 ft., but a considerable amount of additional oil was found in the shale immediately overlying the Dakota. From 2630 ft., the well produced in 16 hr. 750 bbl. of fluid, 33 per cent of which was water. Production in the Sundance sand of Jurassic age was found in the Midwest Refining Company's No. 4 Parkinson, in the NE.-SW.-SE. of sec. 22-4N.-92W., and completed on the last day of the year 1926, for an initial production of 450 bbl. of oil at a total depth of 3242 ft. The well completed in 1933 is also a Sundance sand producer and was finished at a depth of 3447 ft. It extends the productive area of the field about a quarter of a mile cast. The Iles field is said to have a potential production of 5000 bbl. of oil a day from its present wells, but for the past year has been held at about 600 bbl. a day. The most important test, stratigraphically, ever drilled on the western slope of Colorado is the California Company's No. 1 Raven, NW.-SE. of sec. 30-2N.-102W., which had an initial production of 138 bbl. of oil of 32" gravity, in the Weber formation (Pennsylvanian) between 5750 to 6315 ft. It mas drilled to 7137 ft., probably near the base of the Weber, and then plugged back to 6315 ft. It was shot quite heavily with nitro-glycerin, but failed to respond. General equations relating the pressure drop necessary to sustain the flow of a fluid through a porous matrix at a given rate have been developed. The results indicate that at high values of flow rate the pressure-flow behavior may not necessarily satisfy the usual Darcy equation. The mathematical analysis, carried through the micro-pore geometry and extended through the macro-reservoir scale, indicate that Darcy's law, of limited applicability to certain ranges of Reynolds numbers, can be generalized through the inclusion of some additional parameters. The "generalized Darcy equation" has also been formulated in dimen-sionless form permitting the evaluation of its predictive accuracy with regard to literature data. A comparison between predicted and experimental values indicates that the generalized Darcy equation predicts the pressure drops with good agreement over all possible ranges of Reynolds numbers. INTRODUCTION The limits and the nature of validity of Darcy's law' has been a subject of every-day interest to the industry for many years. It is well known that as the Reynolds number, characteristic of the fluid flow through porous media, becomes large, Darcy's law gradually loses its predictive accuracy and ultimately becomes completely void. For the last 20 years much has been said and written on this subject. Unfortunately little has been accomplished to bring about a satisfactory agreement, at least on the nature of the threshold of validity of Darcy.'s law. Fluid dynamists, geo-physicists, and engineers all had their individual views, explanations, interpretations and concepts on the subject. To some, a mechanistic analogy with pipe-flow proved a satisfactory explanation.' To others,' turbulence, in its random character, was incompatible with the geometric structure of consolidated porous systems. To some,4 turbulence merely represented a factor influencing the permeability measurements and again to others5,6,7 em-pirical or semi-empirical correlations proved satisfactory from an engineering viewpoint. Deviations from Darcy's law at high flow rates have been studied by systematic experiments by Fancher, Lewis, and Barnes.' In an article on the flow of gases through porous metals, Green and Duwezs conclude that the onset of turbulence within the pores appears unsatisfactory to explain deviations from Darcy's law. This view is held by many others. While the subject remained controversial for many years, the development of vast natural gas reserves throughout recent years further justified considerable interest on this problem from the standpoint of gas reservoir behavior. As large amounts of field data became available from the operation of many gas fields, it became evident that the steady-state behavior of gas wells was not, in general, in agreement or compatible with Darcy's law. This suggested a careful reconsideration of all mechanisms which may account for pressure drops in addition to viscous shear. In a series of articles9,10 . Hou-peurt indicated that deviations from Darcy's law may be explained on the basis of kinetic energy variations and jetting effects without resorting to assumptions on turbulent flow conditions. Another article by Schneebeli11 indicates that special experiments by Lindquist clearly demonstrated that the onset of turbulence does not necessarily coincide with conditions of deviation from Darcy's law. This view is also held by M. King Hubbert.12 Starting with the basic pressure-flow relations suggested by Houpeurt, the derivation, development and extension of analytical expressions to -supplement and generalize Darcy's law has been the objective of this work. THE first year to which the Revenue Act of 1936 has applied is now passed. It is appropriate to try to give some calm thought to the plan of Federal income taxation as now imposed and what it will mean to the business and industry of the country if this plan of taxation is continued unchanged. Whether or not we like to pay these taxes is beside the point. Taxes are high and may be expected to be high for many years. The important question is whether the taxes to be imposed will destroy or injure business enterprise and development, and, in so doing, lower the standards of employment, living, comfort, and welfare of our people. The power to tax is the power to destroy. That destruction may come suddenly as a cyclone, or slowly as dry rot. What, if any, features are there in the present plan of Federal income taxation that have these destructive tendencies? A few of the points follow that seem to call for consideration.
