One of the most interesting of all the subjects required of persons studying the different facets of coal mining is coal mine gases. Some mine gases have been a real problem since the very beginning of underground mining and in the early days there was insufficient knowledge to really cope with them. The history of mining shows that until the last 50 years, work was done primarily by the hand methods which are primitive by today's standards. Miners had to contend with gases without the aid of enclosed lighting, permissible mine machinery, sophisticated testing devices, and high pressure ventilating fans. In early days the miners were not educated as to the different mine gases nor did they have the technical equipment to determine the actual composition of the deadly atmospheres they encountered. They simply applied a descriptive term to each gas or mixture of gases depending on its effect on a person or the surrounding atmosphere. The gases or mixtures of gases were then referred to as "damps" which was probably derived from the German word "dampf," meaning vapors or gases. The more common damps encountered were as follows: Blackdamp A condition of the atmosphere where a miner's light would be extinguished and in which breathing would be difficult, sometimes even resulting in suffocation. An atmosphere deficient in oxygen and which could contain a combination of any of the mine gases. Firedamp Flammable mixtures of methane and air which would either burn or explode when ignited. White Damp A mixture of gases containing carbon monoxide.

WITHIN the last twenty-five or thirty years the actual operations of the great mining industry have passed almost wholly under the charge of men trained in the technical colleges. It follows that the industry is profoundly influenced for good or ill by the character of the training which the college graduate receives, and the relations existing between the industry and the colleges. This fact seems to be generally recognized, as evidenced, for example, by the existence of a Committee on Technical Education created some two or three years ago by the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America. In 1921 this committee rendered a very able and. extremely well poised reports of technical education as applied to the prospective mining engineer. It deserves the attention of every one interested in the effectiveness of engineering training. That the importance of the relation between the mining industry and the engineering colleges is recog-nized is evidenced also by the mass of criticism, usually adverse, which is proffered to and often hurled at the colleges by those in the industry. The man inn the field sometimes goes so far as to say that engineering educa-tion is hopelessly inefficient and its product worthless, while the college worker sometimes complains that the demands of the industrialist are too numerous and conflicting to be met, and adds that they would' best be ignored. Between these extremes, there seems to be a general consensus of opinion that the training of the would-be engineer can be, and. ought to be, made much better than it now is.

Pumping coal to market may help Appalachian coal operators increase their share of the eastern seaboard fuel business. Transporting it by pipeline is already an accomplished fact, but until recently it had to be dewatered to be used in boiler furnaces. The campaign for these eastern markets was begun in earnest last November by the widely publicized announcement of successful plant-scale firing of a central station boiler with coal slurry pumped to the burners. This latest advance makes coal similar to oil and gas in convenience in handling and controlling at the consumption end of the pipeline. Slurry could be considered a new commodity for the fuel market. HUGE POTENTIAL MARKET The heaviest concentration of power plants in the U.S. is along the line Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston which makes this region the best hunting ground for selling pipelined coal brought from western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. Furthermore, if this region is assumed to consume 125 million tons of coal annually, on a comparable basis, the consumption of oil and gas would be about 180 million tons. Even if all of this fuel is not consumed in central stations, it is still a very big market for coal at the right price. Consolidation Coal Co. and Texas Eastern Transmission Co. are trying to line up customers in this area so that a pipeline can be built. This is not to say that there are not many other areas in the U.S. that could not be supplied advantageously by a mine-to-market pipeline.

Ernest R.. WOAKES, Cana, Colombia: The allusion in this paper, under the heading " Mining on the Isthmus," to the Espiritu Santo mine at Cana is neither according to fact nor worthy of the most interesting and able summary of the mining districts of Colombia contained in the remainder of the paper. The following remark is certainly open to contention: "The most widely-known mine of this department is the Espiritu Santo, at Cana, a quartz-mine opened up in 1680 and abandoned in 1727 on account of the attacks of the Cana Indians. This mine undoubtedly produced great quantities of gold, although many of the accounts given of its ancient richness are probably exaggerated. In 1884 it was rediscovered and reopened by the Darien Gold Mining Company, and under the able management of Mr. Thomas H. Leggett, now prominent in South African mining circles, produced for a time successful results ; but later the veins became pockety and the output unsatisfactory." The mine here referred to, though situated at Cana, was not the Espiritu Santo mine, and was closed down in 1892. Mr. Leggett, however, ran ten stamps on the ore from it for some two or three months in the year 1890, when he left Colombia. The Espiritu Santo mine was not reopened by the Darien Gold Mining Company until the year 1894. For the last three years the ore from the old Spanish workings of this mine has been yielding in the mill 1 ounce to the ton, and has served to keep the mine going whilst extensive development-works have been

HENRY FAY, Cambridge, Mass. (written discussion *).-Mr. Rawdon has made a distinct contribution to our knowledge of wrought iron, and .perhaps of steel. It will undoubtedly lead to more careful scrutiny of high-phosphorus steels, with perhaps important results. In view of his results, it would seem to be unprofitable to push further any propaganda on the use of higher-phosphorus low-carbon steels until further information is available. As is well known, and as Mr. Rawdon clearly shows, the process of solidification is a selective one, and there is abundant opportunity for those portions of the melt last to solidify to become rich in phosphorus, and the diffusion of this phosphorus-rich area is slow. Hot work does not help the situation appreciably and only serves to concentrate the low-melting material. It is undoubtedly true, as some writers have recently claimed, that the specifications for steels as they. now exist eliminate some perfectly good material. Higher phosphorus in steel may be perfectly safe provided all of the phosphide is completely and uniformly, diffused in the solid solution. If, on the contrary, it is not evenly diffused, and there is a reasonable chance for it not to be, it makes the steel unsafe. Until our knowledge: of the rate of diffusion of phosphorus in steel, and the effect of other elements upon the rate, is more complete, it seems to me unwise, in view of Mr. Rawdon's experiments, to listen to the recommendations for the use of higher-phosphorus steels.

This brief resume of events, transpiring in Mexico, culled front the daily New York newspapers, since the last Bulletin-went to press, does not indicate any degree of improvement in the situation. RECORDS OF 217 MEXICO KILLINGS SUBMITTED BY AMBASSADOR FLETCHER Henry P. Fletcher, the American Ambassador to Mexico, called as the first witness before the Rules Committee of the House which has begun a preliminary inquiry into conditions in Mexico, which, it, is believed, will lead to a thorough and far-reaching investigation by a joint Senate and House Committee of the entire Mexican problem, submitted a list of the names of Americans officially known to have been killed in Mexico, a majority of them murdered in cold blood, since the overthrow of Porfirio Diaz by Maderoin 1911. The list contains 217 names and in comparatively few instances do the records show that arrests were made by the particular Mexican faction that happened to be in power where the crime was committed. In only one instance, that of John B. McManus, who was killed in March, 1915, was reparation made. It is significant that McManus was killed by Zapatistas, and Zapata officials apologized for the crime and paid to Mrs. McManus a voluntary indemnity of $20,000 in gold. Of the 217 persons listed as victims of the Mexicans, .137 perished since Carranza came into power. The list, it was admitted, is not complete. It was evident, says the New York Times, that the Ambassador considered the situation very serious.

THE means relied on to attain uniformity in Bessemer steel may be enumerated as follows : I. The appearance of the flame. II. The appearance of the slag. III. The spectrum of the flame. IV. Examination of the steel itself. At present, I wish briefly to bring forward a few considerations with reference to the last two mentioned, namely, the conditions favoring the employment of the spectroscope and examination of the steel. From the amount of careful investigation which has been devoted to the examination of the Bessemer flame by the spectroscope, both on the part of scientists and practical metallurgists, one might reasonably expect some results definite and satisfactory in their nature, first, as regards the nature of the flame, and second, as to the practical value of the spectroscope as a guide in conducting the process. We find, in fact, however, that uncertainty and confusion still exist. In Germany, where this subject has received the greatest attention, it is now very generally conceded that manganese is the cause of the well-known groups of dark bands that characterize the Bessemer spectrum. Nor is it easy to see how we can avoid accepting this conclusion, when Wedding and Von Lichtenfels have produced the manganese spectrum and found it to correspond closely with that shown by the Bessemer flame. But it is evident, on a moment's reflection, as Roscoe has recently brought forward, that manganese cannot be the only cause of the Bessemer spectrum, for we notice the characteristic bands quite as

THE disastrous effect of two major wars on foreign economic health is giving American capital opportunities which might have not otherwise developed. At a time when discovery of major orebodies in the United States awaits fuller application of new geophysical tools and technical methods, U. S. investors must seek other fields where investment may be put to work. The unsettling effects of war have made it almost impossible for foreign nationals to develop mineral wealth, permitting Americans to enter at a time when U. S. mining, with a few exceptions, is in the process of expanding known orebodies and developing only a few new ones. Available capital, however, is not the only pre- requisite for entering the foreign mineral development field. The capital must be able to work in favorable economic atmosphere, a condition not easily satisfied in a world constantly in a state of political and social flux. In many countries, the political theory changes as often as the wind direction in March. Thus, the political stability of the form of government is of prime importance to the investor. In addition, a balanced budget and a moderate tax structure are important. Because in making foreign investment it is inevitable that one will have dealings with government officials, it is basic that they must be of high integrity. In countries filling the requirements, it will usually be found that the economic initiative of the individual is respected. The less developed nations maintaining a free enterprise economy (to which this chapter is addressed) have real and substantial opportunities to lay a foundation for general economic progress by using their mineral resources. Most of these nations have mineral resources which could be developed. By seizing these opportunities, nations seeking rapid economic development can secure a source of foreign exchange earnings to finance the imports needed for growth and, at the same time, increase the technical knowledge and well-being of an important part of their population. History clearly shows the manner in which most of the currently industrialized nations have used mineral resources to support their development. Indeed, few nations have managed to achieve a high level of income without a firm base of mineral resource development. The main exceptions appear to be the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, and New Zealand, and the last two have based their prosperity on a highly efficient agriculture. Economic growth in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, and Russia was importantly based on the use of indigenous mineral resources. Despite this record of accomplishment through mineral development, many of the currently less developed nations are not taking advantage of the opportunities available in the mineral field. Restrictive laws or practices in many such nations operate effectively to prevent development of mineral resources. This failure to grasp real opportunities for development is based on a series of arguments that the mineral field offers few substantial and attainable advantages. PROSPECTING for oil in Spain has been going on for many years but only in a very haphazard way and without adequate geological or technical advice. Shallow wells have been drilled in several provinces but, for the most part, they have been doomed to failure from the beginning because of unfavorable geological locations, inadequate drilling equipment inexperienced operators, or lack of sufficient capital. Geologists seem to agree that the most favorable chances for commercial fields are in the northern part of Spain where the petroliferous Triassic beds underlie Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. The prov-vinces of Santander, Burgos, Alava, Vizcaya, Navarra, and Guipuzcoa seem to offer the most promising localities. Several shallow wells have been drilled near Villamartin about 60 Km. northeast of Cadiz. One of these wells produced a small quantity of light oil but was never operated. The Spanish Government has been drilling on a well in this district for some time, using the Russian free-fall drilling system. The present depth is about 3000 meters. Several years ago the Compania Petrolera Franco-Espanola drilled a well to a depth of about 700 meters near Elorrio, province of Vizcaya. A diamond-core drill was used. The well was located on vertical Cretaceous beds near an igneous dike. The same company, in March, 1923, made a new location about 500 meters away from the first well and the same distance from the dike, in beds dipping about 80°, and is now drilling its No. 2 well. The last depth reported was about 200 meters.

FRED. MACCOY, Raton, N. M. (written discussion *).-In the review of the Chilean nitrate industry presented by Messrs. Rogers and Van Wagenen, the most critical point relating to the future of the industry has been summed up in the last paragraph: when nitric acid can be produced synthetically cheaper than from the Chilean deposits, the Chilean industry will cease. A study of the prevailing mining methods and extraction process leads one to suspect that much can be done to reduce the present cost of the finished product; and a reasonable reduction of the cost would make available immense reserves of low-grade caliche, the locations of which are fairly well delimited. In a study of costs, one finds that actual data are very hard to procure. The average operator does not know, with any degree of reliability, his "head assay," what percentage of the caliche is lost in mining, nor what tonnage of caliche he is putting into the maquina. One manager remarked to me, "We are not concerned in what it costs to treat a ton of caliche, we are interested only in what it costs to, produce a quintal of' finished nitrate." Apart from the crude methods of mining, and the inefficient work in extraction, attention is at once drawn to the fact that the 40d., stated as the cost of the nitrate at the plant, has become 80d. by the time it is on board ship. Discussion of the paper of E. B. THORNHILL, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1653 to 1670. D. B. HUNTLEY, Oakland, Cal.-About 15 years ago it chanced to be my lot to cyanide some mill tailings, assaying about $5 per toll in gold and, a few cents in silver. It was in southern Idaho, a. desert region where costs are nearly as large as in central Nevada. We knew that we had a lot of tailings that had been amalgamated and contained about 1 lb. of quicksilver per ton. We knew that we would dissolve some of the quicksilver when we cyanided them with say 0.25 per cent. cyanide solution. We figured (optimistically) that the cyanide would dissolve all of the quicksilver, and we thought to capture all of that, 1 lb. per ton; and we figured out profits as partly gold, partly silver, and partly quicksilver from the recovery in working those tailings. Actually, however, we did this: We had a battery of three large, old-fashioned silver-mill retorts. We retorted our zinc-dust precipitate, recovering about ¼ lb. of quicksilver per ton treated. That was only a loss of 75 per cent. of what we originally had, but still it was profitable by virtue of the conditions. I mention it partly to call attention to the crude old way of doing it, and partly to call attention to how chemical methods for recovering quicksilver have developed in the last 15 years.

THE, prices of crude petroleum and its derivatives have shown an upward trend from 1915 to 1920, and a downward trend from 1920 to 1923, see Table 1. Over the former period, oil prices were dominated by the rapidly increasing demands and inflation incident to the war and its aftermath, while over the latter period oil prices were influenced at the outset by deflation and then by the conditions of overproduction that have characterized the past three years. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the broader features of the more recent price movements in the petroleum industry and to relate these features to basic economic conditions in the industry. INDEX NUMBERS OF OIL PRICES The analysis and comparison of price movements may be facilitated by converting actual prices into relative prices, or index numbers, with 1913 taken as a base of 100. In this way, the various price groups are expressed as percentages of the 1913 prices and may thus be readily compared with one another or with the average prices of other commodities similarly expressed. Table 1 gives the index numbers representing the average prices of crude petroleum, gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil, lubricating oils, and all commodities. The last named is the index of all commodities as published by the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and .is widely accepted .as the official measure of the general price level. The index numbers of oil prices were calculated by the writer from weekly quotations published in trade journals.

This paper presents the results of experiments in the treatnient of the gold-bearing ores of the Pis Pis district, near the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua, C. A. Up to the present time, the methods in use in this section of the country for the extraction of the values from the ores have been of the crudest, and the waste has been criminal in its enormity. The transportation of heavy machinery being difficult and costly, recourse has been had to flimsy and inadequate installations, involving great wastes in operation. In some places $15 ore is considered the lowest workable grade. One mine that came under my observation had a 7-ft. vein of $23 ore when examined for purchase; it has been running for years and is now deeply in debt. The future metallurgy of these ores must depend upon chemical, mechanical, and economical considerations—the last being, of course, a resultant of the two former, discussed in the light of prevailing or realizable commercial and industrial conditions. I. Chemical. The ores consist principally of quartz, carrying galena, pyrite, marcasite, and chalcopyrite, and occasionally magnetite, hematite, pyromorphite, and sphalerite, in which minerals the gold lies. The quartz veins occur between malls of andesite, " porphyry," or dioritic rocks, occasionally limestone and dacite. Often the dacite itself is heavily ribbed and filled with auriferous quartz, and is mined as ore. Owing to the excessive rainfall of the country, the ores above water-level have been oxidized and leached of their sulphides, and have become in that operation highly acid and free from

It is not my purpose in this paper to describe all the different contrivances which have been devised, during the last quarter of a century, for the purpose of Iessening the expense of mining and tunnelling operations; I wish merely to call your attention to the crying want of the Western miners for some cheap and effective machine, capable of economizing on the heavy item of hand-drilling, and to enumerate a few of the latest improvements which have been made in machines of this class. This necessity for the introduction of some kind of labor-saving machinery in mining, especially in the West, begins to make itself felt more imperatively every day. No branch of industry has remained so conservative to the old customs and systems of working, as has mining; and yet no branch is so entirely dependent on economical working for a successful issue; and in very few is the proportion of cost of hand-labor to profits obtained so preponderantly heavy. Perhaps the chief reason for this seeming apathy towards progress in this direction arises from the fact that nearly all mining operations, especially in this country, are carried on in regions more or less remote from the great centres of civilization, thereby rendering the carriage and erection of machinery extremely difficult and expensive. 1. INTRODUCTION. AT the Washoe smelter,. Anaconda, Mont., the blister-copper from the converters is transferred, by means of a crane, to a refining-furnace,, in which it is brought to proper pitch by means of air and poles. From this furnace the refined copper, containing gold and silver, is poured into cast-iron molds placed on a platform-conveyor, giving an anode 36.75 in. long, 28 in. wide, and 21 in. thick. By reason of a disagreement between the smelter and the refinery, in reference to the silver-content of the anodes, it became necessary to investigate the methods of sampling used. II. SMELTER METHOD OF SAMPLING. At the smelter the sampling is done by " spotting " into water a small portion of the molten stream of copper as it flows from the furnace, by batting" the stream with a wooden paddle. The first sample is taken 30, min. after the pouring is started, three. other samples being taken at 1-hr. intervals, each sample weighing from 4 to 6 oz. The samples are dried, examined for particle's of burnt wood, screened on a 10-mesh screen of No. 8 wire to remove the fines, the oversize then screened on a 4-mesh screen of No. 20 wire to remove the coarse, the undersize of this screen being taken as the sample. Teh four portions thus obtained are thoroughly mixed and spli in half by passing over a 16-slot splitting-device, slots being 0.5 in. wide. One-half of the sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis and one-half kept as a duplicate. III. REFINERY METHOD OF SAMPLING. The sink-float methods designated by heavy-media separation processes were pioneered by C. Erb Weunsch for the treatment of base metal ores as an improvement over jigs. The work of Weunsch was further developed by Victor Rakowsky and The American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. Early in the development of the processes, the inherent unsuitability of galena as the solid constituent of the medium was recognized and ferrous media amenable to magnetic recovery and control were developed. The high efficiency and low cost of magnetic recovery and cleaning of ferrous media regardless of particle size, slime contamination, or surfacial oxidation had led to the adoption of ferrous media by all of the sink-float plants operating under the heavy-media separation processes patents controlled by American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. Approximately 2,000,000 tons of base metal and nonmetallic minerals are treated each month by these methods. Heavy-media separation processes are a modern practical and economical adaptation of the well-known laboratory procedure for separating a mixture of two solids by immersing the mixture in a liquid having a specific gravity intermediate the specific gravities of two solids. The lighter solid floats while the heavier sinks. This method of separation has been attempted on a commercial scale, but the high loss and high cost of the organic liquids halted the development of the process. Many attempts have been made to simulate a heavy liquid by using a suspension of a finely divided solid in water. If the solid phase of the suspension is ground fine enough, the suspension can be made stable or so slow settling that a substantially uniform specific gravity can be maintained from top to bottom of the bath. However, any material separated by such methods will inevitably be contaminated by some slime which will eventually accumulate in the bath and cause a viscous medium at the expense of separating efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to provide means for continually cleaning a portion of the medium to eliminate slime at the same rate at which it is introduced to the medium. The problem of efficiently cleaning the medium limits the minimum grain size of the solid of the suspension in the case of the Chance sand process for cleaning coal, because de-cantation is the only cleaning method available. If the sand is too fine, it will be lost along with the slime. Therefore, coarse sand must be used, and to maintain a semblance of a uniform suspension, it is necessary to use strong rising water currents. The combination results in a separation based more on hindered settling classification than on sink-float principles. As previously mentioned, galena was used as the solid constituent of the medium during the early stages of the development work. The high specific gravity of galena made it suitable for the preparation of medium for high specific gravity separations. Galena can be cleaned by either decantation or by froth flotation. As with sand, de-cantation limits the minimum particle size of the media that can be cleaned without excessive loss. Froth flotation for cleaning galena medium has been used, but the problem of floating fine galena that has been exposed to extensive oxidation is well known to be a most difficult one. Last year the largest heavy-media plant m the world, and the second plant to be installed, converted from galena medium to ferrous medium despite the fact that the ore contains galena which can be used as medium. The change to ferrous medium has been beneficial in many ways. Today all the heavy-media plants have been converted from galena to ferrous media. Unquestionably, ferrous media have the widest application of any media developed, for the following reasons: 1. Ease of recovery and cleaning by magnetic means. Particle size or surface condition not a factor. 2. Low consumption per ton of ore treated. 3. Resistance to abrasion. 4. Widest range of media densities, including higher workable densities (1.25 to 3.4) than have been found possible with nonferrous media. 5. Space required for recovery and cleaning of ferrous media is considerably less than that for nonferrous media. 6. Ferrous media require lower capital investment and operating costs for media recovery and cleaning. A simple method is described for determining the orientation of a single crystal by means of a cylindr cal X-ray camera. Orientation setting to within ±1 deg is attainable by a stereographic analysis of a single cylindrical Laue pattern produced by the originally randomly mounted crystal. Final precision adjustments which permit orientation of the crystal to within ±5 min of arc from the desired position can be made by the method of Weisz and Cole. A chart, originally Presented by Schiebold and schneider7 and which allows a direct reading of the two stereographic polar coordinates of the corresponding pole of a given Laue spot, has been recomputed to aid in the stereographic interpretation of the cylindrical Laue X-ray photograph. Detailed instructions for the use of the chart, a simple example, and a comparison with the conventional flat-film Laue Methods, are presented. 1 HE problem of determining the orientation of the unit cell of a single crystal relative to a set of fixed external reference coordinates is fundamental to most problems of X-ray crystallography and to many experimental studies of the structure-sensitive physical properties of crystalline materials. Several techniques for measuring these orientation relations have been developed which correlate optically observable, orientation-dependent physical properties to the unit cell. Examples of such procedures include the observation of cleavage faces or birefringence, as discussed by bunn,1 or the examination of preferentially formed etch-pits, as discussed by barrett.2 Each of these methods is limited, for various reasons, to an orientation accuracy of approximately ±1 deg—a serious limitation in some experimental studies. Several other limitations decrease the generality of these methods. Of these, perhaps most notable is the absence in many crystals of the physical property necessary for the orientation technique. The most widely used methods for determining crystal orientation are variations of the Laue X-ray diffraction method. Because of the indeterminacy of the X-ray wavelength diffracted to a given spot, the interpretation of Laue photographs is now limited almost exclusively to the procedure of using a chart to determine the angular coordinates of the corresponding pole for each spot. For the flat-film geometries, either a leonhardt3 or a Dunn-Martin4 chart is used in interpreting transmission patterns, whereas a greninger5 chart is used for interpreting back-reflection patterns. A less common method of interpreting flat-film transmission Laue photographs is by comparing the Laue pattern with the Majima and Togino standards,6 or with the revised standards prepared by Dunn and Martin.4 Although this last method is applicable only to crystals with cubic symmetry, it can be very rapid and just as accurate as the graphical methods. The primary limitation of all the X-ray methods mentioned is the relatively small number of Laue spots and zones which are recorded on the flat film. Often, few, if any, major poles appear, thus making interpretation tedious and sometimes uncertain. The use of a cylindrical film eliminates this problem. Schiebold and schneider7 prepared a chart by which the orientation of the specimen crystal could be determined from a cylindrical Laue photograph. However, it was only drawn in 5-deg intervals of each of the two angular variables used to identify the Laue spots, thus limiting the accuracy of orientation to about ±3 deg. An examination of this chart indicated that if it were drawn in 2-deg intervals, crystal orientations to ±1 deg would be attainable. Subsequent use of the replotted chart has confirmed this accuracy. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the redevelopment and use of this chart, and to point out its advantages and limitations. I) CAMERA GEOMETRY AND CHART CALCULATIONS The geometry of the cylindrical camera with a related reference sphere is shown in Fig. 1. The X-ray beam BB&apos; pierces the film at the back-reflection hole B, strikes the crystal at 0, and the transmitted beam leaves the camera at the transmission hole T. One of the diffracted X-rays intersects the film at a Laue spot L. The normal OP to the diffracting plane bisects the angle BOL between the incident and diffracted X-ray beams. The point P on the reference sphere can be located uniquely by the two orthogonal motions 6 and 8 on the two great circles ENWS and BPQT respectively. Because the Bragg angle 8 (= 90 - < BOP) is always less than 90 deg, P always remains in the hemisphere BENWS. Therefore, if every possible pole P is to be recorded on the same stereographic projection, it is necessary that the projection reference point be at T with the projection plane tangent to the sphere at B.* The great
