TEN years ago a broad knowledge of aerial mapping, coupled with a smattering of geology, qualified one to speak on the subject of the appli-cation of aerial mapping to geology. Today, with aerial maps a common tool in the hands of expert geologists on every continent throughout the world, it would be nothing short of presumptuous for the author of this paper, who is not a geologist, to give any geological statements on his own authority. Relatively, today we are only purveyors of general geological gossip, with a definite case here and there by way of illustration. But we can present a story of the really marvellous strides that have been made in the evolution of aerial mapping, built around a skeleton of geological tidbits, from which some useful conclusions may be drawn. The average geologist goes about reading his aerial maps much as one would approach the problem of deciphering a cryptogram. To begin with, typical key expressions appear in recurring sequences and under certain conditions. If once the meaning of these isolated bits of infor-mation can be ascertained, the message begins to take meaning. In a similar fashion, the geologist works out his key from aerial maps of territory with which he has some familiarity. He learns that a certain type of thin, white line may mean a vein of quartz. He sees that a certain change in the photographic tone of vegetation on the ground reflects two kinds of soils on opposite sides of, a contact. He sees that a certain type of alignment of topographical features often means a fault. He learns that by the erosion pattern .he can frequently distinguish soft formations from harder ones. And so, bit by bit, he ties together the information of the picture with his experience on the ground until he develops a reasonably creditable capacity of interpretation. Through the complete gamut of surface conditions, ranging all the way from flat, arid, exposed desert terrain to dense jungle, or rugged mountains, the evidence from which the geologist must make his inter-pretation varies with bewildering profusion. The quality of photographs which are obtainable may range from perfect pictures in the desert to almost useless smudges in the steaming jungles. One thing he has learned with certainty-the airplane carrying its mapping camera is a superb reconnaissance tool, only awaiting his ingenuity in correlating the pictures with the ground to simplify most exploratory problems.

During isothermal recrystallization, the rate of grain growth in dilute Fe-hlo alloys decreased rapidly with increasing Mo content, up to -0.04 at pct, and less rapidly therea-fter. Rate of growth also decreased sharply with time at constant temperature. The observed rates of boundary migration did not cor,espond to predictions of the Lucke-Detert theory. It is proposed that the growth of recrystallized grains is inhibited by clustering of solute atoms at inzperfections in the unrecrystallized matrix. It is now firmly etablished" that the rate of re-crystallization of cold-worked metals, i.e., the rate of growth of recrystallized grains into the deformed matrix, is greatly inhibited by the presence of alloying elements in solid solution. The effect is greatest with the first very small quantity of alloying elements, and additional increments cause much less pronounced retardation of growth. The early papers on this subject were reviewed in Ref. 6. The mechanism of retardation of growth is not clear; only one theory, due to Lucke and Detert? has been advanced. This assumes an elastic interaction between grain boundaries and solute atoms which tends to increase the concentration of the latter in the grain boundaries. Except at very low solute concentrations or at high temperatures, the mobility of the boundary is assumed to be controlled by the rate of diffusion of the accompanying solute atoms. Abrahamson and Blakeney2 have noted a correlation between "recrystallization temperature of binary alloys of iron and the number of d-shell electrons in the solute atoms. There is need for considerably more experimental data on the effect of solute elements on the rate of migration of grain boundaries into the deformed matrix, to provide the basis for an understanding of the annealing process in metallic solid solutions. Only a start has been made in this direction. To avoid unnecessary complications, alloys in which precipitation does not occur should be used, but to produce the maximum effects it is desirable to select alloys with a large difference between the sizes of the atoms of the solvent and solute. For these reasons, alloys of iron and molybdenum sen for this study. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES A 30-lb. ingot of iron and four similar ingots of Fe-Mo alloys were vacuum melted in magnesia crucibles and poured into cast-iron molds. The molybdenum contents were planned according to the results of Abrahamson and Blakeney2 sothattwoalloyswould fall in the region of rapid change of recrystallization kinetics with change in composition (0.006 to 0.015 and 0.030 to 0.045 at. pct Mo) and two alloys would fall in the region of gradual change (0.18 to 0.24 and

An hcp phase may be induced by cold working the ß&apos; phase of the Ag-Zn system. This phase reverts to ß&apos; on subsequent aging. No phase change occurs on cold working the o phase, but ß&apos; is formed when the deformed alloy is subsequently aged at room temperature. It is concluded that for alloys near 50 at pct Zn the ordered bcc ß&apos; phase is the equilibrium structure at room temperature. WhEN the disordered bcc ß phase of the Ag-Zn system is cooled to temperatures below 258o to 274oC, it transforms to a complex hexagonal phase <o.1,2 The nature of the o ß=o transformation has been the subject of some discussion,2&apos;3 and the structure of o has been described in detail.&apos; The latter phase appears to be stable on aging at room temperature but decomposes following cold work. When alloys containing approximately 50 at. pct Zn are rapidly quenched from the 0 phase field, the ß ? o transformation may be suppressed; but the ß phase undergoes an ordering reaction (ß ? ß&apos;). The ß&apos; structure may also be obtained as a result of cold working and aging at room temperature.4 Kitchingman, Hall, and Buckley4 have suggested that the decomposition of (o following cold work proceeds in two stages, (o ? ß followed by ß ? ß&apos;, but did not confirm this by experiment. When the ordered &apos; phases in the systems Cu-Zn5 and Ag-Cd6 are cold worked, they become unstable and transform to a close-packed hexagonal phase (( ) indicating that when order is destroyed in a ß&apos; structure the close-packed hexagonal phase may in many cases be more stable. It thus became of interest to study more closely the effect of cold work and annealing on the stability of both the ß&apos; and o phases in a Ag-50 at. pct Zn alloy. Predetermined weights of spectroscopically-pure Ag and Zn, supplied by Johnson and Matthey, were melted and cast under 1/2 atm of He in transparent vycor tubing. The ingot was homogenized for 1 week at 630°C and quenched into iced brine. Since mechanical polishing was found to induce a phase change, sections were first polished at room temperature, sealed in tubes under 1/2 atm of He, reannealed for several days at 630o or 200°C and then quenched into iced brine. Sections of the alloy thus prepared were found to be homogeneous when examined under the microscope. The sample quenched from 630°C (ß -phase region) was pink in color, whereas the sample quenched from 200°C (o-phase region) was silver. The latter sample showed the characteristic hexagonal anisotropy when examined under polarized light. Filings of the alloy were examined at room temperature, after various heat treatments, using an RCA-Siemens Crystalloflex IV diffractometer with filtered CuKa radiation. The X-ray reflections from flat powder specimens quenched from 630o and 200°C and sieved through 230 mesh were recorded graphically at a scanning speed of 1/2 deg per min. The resultant patterns are shown in Figs. 1(a) and 1(b) and may be identified as those of the 8&apos; and <02 structures respectively. The lattice parameter of the ß&apos; phase was determined as 3.1566Å.* This value compares very well withthatto be expected for a 50 at. pct Zn alloy from the data of Owen and Edmunds? and indicates that no loss of Zn occurred during casting. In order to study the effect of cold work upon the ß&apos; and o phases, filings made at room temperature and sieved through 230 mesh were mounted immediately in the diffractometer-i.e., without a strain-relief anneal. Changes in structure on subsequent aging were followed by scanning repeatedly over the regions of the low index reflections of the ß&apos; and o structures-i.e. , 28 from 35 to 44 deg. Immediately after filing the 8&apos; specimen, additional diffraction peaks were observed in the low-index region of the pattern, as shown in Fig. 1(c). These additional peaks do not coincide with those of the o structure, Fig. l(b), but may be indexed as the (10.0), (00.2), and (10.1) reflections of an hcp phase (<) with nearly ideal axial ratio. However, this hexagonal phase appears to be very unstable since within a very short time at room temperature it reverts back to the ordered ß&apos; phase, the reversion being complete within seven hours. The 5 ? ß&apos; reversion reaction is, therefore, very similar to those already reported in Cu-Zn5 and Ag-Cd6 7&apos;alloys. The action of filing caused the deformed surface of the originally pink ingot to become silver in color, indi-cating that the ( phase possesses similar reflecting properties to the o phase. THE decision of the Supreme Court of the United States not to review the findings of the lower courts closes an interesting chapter in the mining litigation that has arisen as a result of the extralateral feature of the mining law. The time seems opportune to record some of the important geological features, and also some of the legal features, of the controversy, in the hope that these will be permanently accessible to members of the mining profession. After many rumors of litigation, the Utah Consolidated Mining Co. sued its neighbor for the ore that had been, it was alleged, wrongfully extracted from its so-called Yampa limestone lode. This ore lay beneath Utah-Apex surface and was claimed by virtue of the extralateral rights conferred on the Utah Consolidated Co. through the ownership of certain specific mining claims, one of the principal claims being the Yampa. Previous to bringing suit, the Utah Consolidated Co. had strengthened its position by purchasing the Old Yampa mine and by making an agreement with the Utah Metal & Tunnel Co., which gave it clearer title to the outcrop of the Highland Boy limestone. Access to the workings of the Utah-Apex Co. was secured and reciprocal privileges gave Utah-Apex representatives the right to enter the properties of the Utah Consolidated Co. This resulted in the Utah-Apex immediately bringing countersuit for ore alleged to have been wrongfully extracted from under its surface in the Leadville country, see Fig. 4. Six cases came up for consideration: five related to the original suit and the countersuit, and one related to the Dana extralateral claims of the Utah-Apex Co.

The purpose of this paper is to relate briefly the development of magnetic separation and its extension from the separation of iron into its present use in the nonmetallic field, to suggest possible future extensions of its field of usefulness and its possible cooperation with other separating methods. The engineering design of separating machines, and statistics as to the number of machines in operation, types, their location and production are outside the scope of this paper. Specific data will be given, however, on certain selected applications. A large part of human endeavor consists in separating one thing from another; the good from the bad, the desired from the undesired. In fact, a philosopher might plausibly claim that separating things into categories and choosing between them is the object of thought itself. In dealing with matter, separation is nowhere more inherently necessary to attain our objects than in mining and metallurgy. Both our desire and our ability to make separations are results of the physical differences between things. Gross separations such as removing ore from worthless rock or coal from slate are usually made visually and depend upon form and color, which are physical properties. When the desired and the undesired things are intimately mixed, however, it becomes impractical to select visually even if the individual particles are readily recognizable to the eye, and some automatic way of making the particles separate themselves on the basis of their own inherent differences in physical properties must be resorted to. Some of the physical properties which have been used as a basis of separation are: color, shape, hardness, size, density, elasticity, surface propertics (surface tension in contact with liquids, etc.), electrical conductivity, dielectric constant, and magnetic susceptibility. Differences in these properties are used in the following methods of separation: color sorting, sifting, settlement in air and in liquids, float-sink methods, flotation, electrostatic and magnetic separation.

The statistical analysis of blast-furnace data was undertaken to determine some of the relations which exist between the variables involved in furnace operation, and particularly to show the effect of variation of slag composition on such economically important factors as coke consumption, daily tonnage of pig iron and sulfur elimination. It&apos; was desired to correlate the results obtained in commercial practice with those predicted from a study of the quaternary system lime-alumina-silica-magnesia. This paper presents the results of a preliminary study of blast-furnace daily operating reports, and is intended to indicate the suitability of our method of attack and something of the results that may be expected from an extended statistical examination of such data. It has been shown that blast-furnace slags are not composed of oxides, as reported by chemical analysis, but are actually composed of several compounds, each made up of two or more of the oxides present.&apos; These compounds persist in the liquid state, and the properties of a slag are the properties of a mixture of these compounds, and not of a mixture of the ultimate oxides. The oxides lime, alumina, silica and magnesia make up 94 to 96 per cent. of the usual blast-furnace slag, and assuming that we may neglect the remainder of the components, we may determine the minerals present, and their relative proportions, from a study of the quaternary system involving these four oxides. Operating reports from 15 furnaces were available for this investigation. Complete slag analyses for one slag per day were available, per-mittling the calculation of the mineral composition of the slags used. Basic, malleable and foundry irons, with silicon varying from 0.75 to 4.50 per cent. were included in the reports for this examination.

These mines are situated in Griqualand West, which is now a part of the Cape Colony. The town of Kimberley is in latitude 28o40&apos; South, longitude 25o10&apos; East, about 640 miles northeast of Cape Town and 450 miles from Port Elizabeth on the east coast. It is connected with these towns by a railroad, which has been completed during the present year. The mines are located in a desert country, resembling the desert portion of Arizona. The elevation above sea-level is about 4000 feet. The climate is exceedingly hot during the summer months. Diamond Deposits.—There are four large diamond-bearing deposits at Kimberley, all lying within a radius of one and one-half miles, having the De Beers mine as the center. These are named the " Kimberley," " De Beers," " Du Toit&apos;s Pan," and " Bultfontein " mines. There is, also, directly west of the Kimberley mine, a small deposit, called " St. Augustiue," which has been prospected only, and

The fertilizer industry is a meeting place of mining, manufacturing and agriculture. It is an industry of dynamic change, huge tonnages, and great aggregate value. In the United States from 5,000,000 to 8,000,000 tons of fertilizer are made and used per year, with a value at the works of from $200,000,000 to $300,000,000. The world uses about 50,000,000 tons yearly with an aggregate value between two-thirds and one billion dollars. This world output contains of the essential plant-food constituents, nitrogen, phosphate, and potash, approximately 8,000,000 tons. The corresponding United States quantity, as nearly as can be estimated, is 1,400,000 tons of plant food per year in the aggregate tonnage of fertilizer. With the steady increase in the practice of scientific agriculture throughout the world there has been a corresponding growth in the consumption of fertilizers. In the United States there has, indeed, been but a small upward trend in the tonnage sold, measured in millions of tons of all classes of goods which are made and marketed. The real growth has come through the increasing concentration of the essential plant foods in the mixture. Thus it is estimated that between 1920 and 1930, although there was little increase in tonnage of fertilizer, there was an increase of fully 30 per cent in the content of nitrogen, phosphate, and potash. RECENTLY the producing branch of the petroleum industry has shown a considerable and growing interest in the quantitative determination of the water, oil, and gas content of cores as it relates to estimation of reserves, to providing a, basis for judging as to the feasibility of applying various secondary-recovery and pressure-maintenance processes, and in general to the operation of producing properties. For years it has been known that oil, gas and water coexisted in the pores of many semidepleted oil measures. It is now generally believed that oil-bearing beds contain connate water in amounts varying up to 50 per cent of the pore space. However, only lately has reliable direct evidence of the extensive occur-rence of connate water in oil sands been published. Very little work has been done to ascertain the effect of this water on the productivity and ultimate recovery of oil from wells. It was the intent of this research to study the influence of this indigenous water on the flow of oil through unconsolidated sands, with the hope that the results could be applied qualitatively to the flow of oil in underground reservoirs partly saturated with water. Obviously, ultimate recovery estimates based on the void volume of the reservoir will be in error unless a, conscious or unconscious correction is made for the volume of water occupying a portion of the effective pore volume of the reservoir- Evaluation engineers in the past have applied arbitrary saturation and recovery factors that may inadverently have compensated for the failure to consider specifically the water content. Nevertheless, the evidence available indicates that these factors need revising if each is to be independently correct and truly representative. Although the mere fact that the connate water renders part of the pore volume of the reservoir incapable of containing oil is of primary importance to the operator, it is also of interest to know whether and to what extent the presence of varying amounts of interstitial water influ-ences the permeability of the sand to oil.

TWO American students entered the École des Mines in 1856, Joseph Lesley of Philadelphia and Thomas Egleston of New York. Lesley remained there only one year, but Egleston completed the whole curriculum and received, in 1860, the certificate given to foreign students in lieu of the official appointment and degree awarded French students. Returning home he received, in 1861, an appointment by Secretary Henry of the Smithsonian Institution to sort, label, and arrange the collections of mineralogical and geological specimens which had been brought to Washington by the various government exploring expeditions in the West. Thomas Egleston, born in New York City on Dec. 9, 1832, was the son of Thomas Jefferson Egleston, who came to New York from Massachusetts some time before 1829. The first American ancestor of the family had settled near Dorchester in 1630. T. J. Egleston and Joseph Battell established an iron-merchandizing business* at 166 South St., New York, which prospered exceedingly; so much so that when Thomas J. Egleston died, July. 12, 1861, his estate had a book value of over $500,000. Since an older brother was expected eventually to take over this business, Thomas, who had a liking for science, went to Yale, where he completed the regular four-year course in 1854, and then remained another year for advanced work in chemistry under Silliman. One biographer says he went to Europe, early in 1856, on account of his health. It was the custom at that time for wealthy young men to make a tour of Europe after completing their academic education. On the steep slopes of the Kootenays, 15 to 20 miles south of Nelson, B. C., are a number of ore occurrences (Fig. 1). One that has many features of mining and geological interest is the Ymir Yankee Girl Gold Mines Limited. Discovery of this property was made in 1899 at an outcrop on the hillside, some 2500 ft. above the village of Ymir. This proved to be a branch vein 20 ft. long leading to two main veins, the Yankee Girl and the Spur (Fig. 5). The ore pattern as now delimited shows a remarkable increase in ore area with depth below the outcrop. This recent development is of interest particularly in view of the fact that the property was nearly condemned, professionally. Another interesting feature, which has a bearing upon its history, is the persistent excess of tonnage produced from period to period over visible reserves. This is not ascribed to lagging mine development, but to detailed vein characteristics, which we will endeavor to make clear by giving a description of the veins and their surroundings. HISTORY AND PRODUCTION Little interest_was_evidenced-in this-distriet until the building of the railway in 1893 provided easy access and the discovery of the Ymir mine in 1896 attracted attention. As a result, the Ymir Yankee Girl group of claims was staked in October 1899. In 1907, an American syndicate took over the property and subsequently extended the 50-ft. drift and opened the present 400 and 540-ft. levels. In 1908, the Syndicate, without recording any shipments in the meantime, dropped its lease, which was taken up by H. L. Rogers, who bonded the Yankee Girl group. Rogers shipped 2622 tons of ore, mainly from the uppermost stope in the mine, which is reported to have yielded

This paper is limited primarily to a description of dry coal-cleaning processes in which air currents are used to effectuate a separation between coal and refuse. Processes depending mainly on differences in the coefficient of friction, resilience and shape are not described unless the use of air is necessary for the proper functioning of the process. The air cleaning of coal is of primary importance to the coal industry of the United States. From figures presented in the 1941 edition Mechannual, it is estimated that at least 12 million tons of bituminous coal was cleaned in the United States during 1940 by machines using air as the separating medium. One of the current problems confronting the coal-preparation engineer is the dry cleaning of small sizes and slacks. Progress in machine development for the cleaning of small sizes has been slow in recent years in the United States of America; it has been much more rapid in Britain and on the European continent. This paper does not attempt an exhaustive survey of all these developments, and only machines and processes that have found considerable commercial application are cited. Further, no critical analysis has been made of the theory involved in the separation of coal from refuse by processes using air as the separating medium other than that necessary for an understanding of particular machine designs and applications. The possibility of using air for the separation of coal from refuse was recognized early by mining men and many attempts were made to develop commercial machines. The ingenuity of the early experimenters is to be marveled at in view of their lack of knowledge of the theoretical principles involved. As in other arts, practice has largely preceded theory. Yet, science and practice play a game of leap frog, now one ahead, then the other; the careful experimenmenter governs his efforts along practical lines by adapting his experiments to the limits prescribed by scientific laws. By first studying developments and the theory involved, it is not only possible to adapt processes to new uses but also to reduce materially operating cost and to build larger units without costly failures. Although many inventors have applied for patents for separating minerals by the use of air currents, the literature in regard to coal is meager. Berrisford2 describes briefly some of the early attempts to clean coal without the use of water. Several of the examples cited by him are reproduced herein. Fig. I shows a machine used for grinding and; izing, in which rollers running in a pan with a perforated bottom and fan opening on the side crushed the coal, which was then carried by the air currents to a settling chamber. The heaviest particles dropped out first and the light ones farthest away, as shown. In the year 1864, a machine was made that could be used as a sizer or to separate dirt from coal with a sized feed (Fig. 2).

THIS report is the first of a series planned by The Mineral Inquiry, organized by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to make factual studies of the world&apos;s mineral resources in their political and international relations. The efforts of The Inquiry are directed toward filling certain notable gaps in available information, without duplication of many other investigations touching this field which are being conducted by other organizations, public and private. Much of its work is indirect-suggesting topics for study by other individuals and organizations and aiding in their planning and correlation. The present report is designed to show the nationality of the commercial control of mineral resources, in addition to the geographic distribution of production by nation-in other words, the overlapping of political and commercial control. Detailed accuracy cannot be claimed for the figures presented. For some companies division of ownership by nationality has been very difficult to ascertain, as many companies are reluctant to dis-close the extent of their holdings in other corporations, and the impossi-bility of tracing all stock ownership is obvious. Also there are frequent changes in the distribution of stock control. The percentages given rep-resent only the participation that has been identified definitely, even though it is known in some cases with fair certainty that larger interests exist, as, for instance, American participation in foreign chromite companies. In bringing together these figures we have had the cordial co-operation of the United States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geologi-cal Survey, the Mineral Division of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, the Brookings Institution, and of many specialists connected with the mineral industries covered. The report does not cover the entire list of minerals. Coal, although it is one of the most important minerals, was omitted because, not more than one or two per cent of the world&apos;s production comes from mines that are owned by companies foreign to the countries where the coal is produced. Others, such as gold, are omitted because sufficient data have not yet been accumulated. It is hoped that some of these may be covered in subsequent reports. It is not our purpose here to discuss the significance of the figures sub-mitted, but only to point out the general nature of the problems on which they have a bearing.

On the steep slopes of the Kootenays, 15 to 20 miles south of Nelson, B. C., are a number of ore occurrences (Fig. 1). One that has many features of mining and geological interest is the Ymir Yankee Girl Gold Mines Limited. Discovery of this property was made in 1899 at an outcrop on the hillside, some 2500 ft. above the village of Ymir. This proved to be a branch vein 20 ft. long leading to two main veins, the Yankee Girl and the Spur (Fig. 5). The ore pattern as now delimited shows a remarkable increase in ore area with depth below the outcrop. This recent development is of interest particularly in view of the fact that the property was nearly condemned, professionally. Another interesting feature, which has a bearing upon its history, is the persistent excess of tonnage produced from period to period over visible reserves. This is not ascribed to lagging mine development, but to detailed vein characteristics, which we will endeavor to make clear by giving a description of the veins and their surroundings. HISTORY AND PRODUCTION Little interest_was_evidenced-in this-distriet until the building of the railway in 1893 provided easy access and the discovery of the Ymir mine in 1896 attracted attention. As a result, the Ymir Yankee Girl group of claims was staked in October 1899. In 1907, an American syndicate took over the property and subsequently extended the 50-ft. drift and opened the present 400 and 540-ft. levels. In 1908, the Syndicate, without recording any shipments in the meantime, dropped its lease, which was taken up by H. L. Rogers, who bonded the Yankee Girl group. Rogers shipped 2622 tons of ore, mainly from the uppermost stope in the mine, which is reported to have yielded

IT has been suggested by a number of investigators, I including Hume-Rothery and Raynor,&apos; that certain intermediate phases in metal systems take on interstitial crystal structures because of an appropriate ratio of radii of the two atoms. If the size factor is an important parameter in determining whether or not an intermediate phase will have an interstitial structure, then it would appear reasonable that the relative sizes of interstitial atoms should have a direct relation to their solubilities in interstitial compounds. It was on such a basis that Petch,&apos; in his discussion of the cementite structure, concluded that nitrogen is the only possible element which could replace carbon. Recent X-ray studies by Jacka indicate that the solid solubility of nitrogen in cementite is negligible. If this is the case, then on the basis of size factor it would not be expected that any element can replace carbon in FeaC, since according to Schwarzkopf and Kieffer4 the covalent atomic radii of nitrogen, carbon, and boron are 0.71, 0.76, and 0.87A, respectively. Nevertheless, Vogel and Tammann in 1922 indicated that a quasi-binary relation exists between the interstitial compounds FeaC and Fe2B and that the solid solubility of boron in FeaC at approximately 1150°C is 1.4 pct B by weight. Because of the apparent disagreement between theory and experiment, the solid solubility of boron in FeaC has been reinvestigated. In addition, the influence of boron on the saturation magnetic moment (per gram) and Curie temperature of cementite was determined. Experimental Procedure A series of Fe-B-C alloys which varied in boron content from 0 to 5.4 wt pct B were prepared by arc melting a 50-g ingot using carbonyl iron, Ache-son AUC graphite, and Cooper grade A boron for starting materials. The composition of these alloys is listed in Table I and shown graphically in Fig. 1. The samples represented by the solid circles were used for X-ray analysis and Curie temperature measurements; by the squares, samples used for quantitative metallography; and by the triangles, samples used for saturation magnetic moment measurements and Curie temperature measurements. After arc melting and subsequent quenching from 1000°C, so that all phases in the resulting microstructure were brittle, one half of the 50-g ingots were pulverized until a powder was obtained which was less than 100 mesh. These powders were then homogenized in evacuated Vycor capsules at 1000°C for 24 hr and water quenched. Although the homogenized powder had sintered somewhat, it was suitable for saturation magnetic moment and Curie temperature determinations, for which the 60 to 100-mesh fraction of the powder was used. For X-ray analysis the homogenized powder was crushed again until a 300-mesh powder was obtained. When glass spheres are crushed by slow compression loading, the outer lune-shaped fragments resulting from the fracture consistently fly outward at high velocity. About 45 pct of the strain energy fed into the sphere-platen system reappears in the form of the kinetic energy possessed by these fragments. These measurements were obtained from high-speed photographs. This kinetic energy can be utilized for addtional comminution if the fragments are allowed to impact against a suitable structure. Comminution theory has advanced considerably in recent years by the study of this unit operation under laboratory conditions. Some of the parameters have been isolated, but the experimental measurements of the pertinent quantities, such as energy, particle size, etc., are still only made prior to and after the conclusion of a fracture sequence. The catastrophic fracture process itself has not been adequately studied from a comminution point of view. It has recently been suggested by Gilvarry that the fragments which result from the free crushing of a single glass sphere by slow compression contain a considerable amount of kinetic energy after fracture. This kinetic energy, if properly directed, possibly can be partially utilized to cause additional fracture. In this paper a hypothesis will be presented which suggests that this kinetic energy is necessarily present and that its dissipation is the process by which a large part of the thermal energy imparted to the crushed product is generated. Evidence supporting the existence of kinetic energy and its utilization for secondary fracture will also be presented. THEORETICAL A previous paper4 has shown that the load-deformation curve of a system composed of an elastic sphere gripped by a pair of parallel platens, can be predicted by a consideration of the theories of Hertz as summarized by Timoshenko.&apos; The deformation A, of one half of the system is given by which states that the deformation is a function of the mutually applied load, P, the radius of the sphere, R; and the respective physical properties of Poisson&apos;s ratio, v, and Young&apos;s modulus of elasticity, Y. The shape of experimental load-deformation curves conform to this relationship. The energy input to the sphere-platen system, can be predicted from the integral of the load acting through the appropriate distance, dA. Since dA can be evaluated in terms of P from the derivative of Eq. 1, this integral can be integrated between limits of 0 and P. The test sphere, however, is loaded at not one but at two points of contact, i.e., at both ends of a diameter, and hence the total energy input, E, is twice the energy input at each end, or The energy input to the system calculated from this equation corresponds to the energy computed from the measured area under the load-deformation curve. Timoshenko, considering the impact of two perfectly elastic spheres, has shown that the inter-penetration distance A is given by - m f (D (^ * ^t w as modified for the special case where one sphere is of infinite radius, i.e., its surface is a plane; where M is the mass of the finite sphere of radius R, and V is the velocity of approach at the start of an impact and also equals the final velocity of separation for perfectly elastic bodies. INTRODUCTION This paper is directed toward those companies or individuals who may be considering the possibility of tin exploration or development projects in South America. Although tin deposits are known in many countries of Latin-America including Argentina, Peru, and Mexico, the majority of the deposits are located in Bolivia and Brazil. These two countries also account for virtually all the current production. Many factors affect the economic decisions related to mining and exploration projects in this region including the following: 1) Types of deposits 2) Anticipated size and grade of deposits 3) Deposit geometry and ore distribution as it affects the selection of a mining method 4) Metallurgical amenability 5) Governmental policies 6) Taxation 7) Anticipated capital and operating costs 8) Marketing costs This discussion will be directed toward each of these points. The majority of the presentation will be concentrated on Bolivia as this country is the principal producer in the region, however, the potential for further tin development in Brazil is excellent. Due to the remote and previously almost inaccessible location of the stanniferous districts of Brazil, little is known with respect to size and type of non-alluvial deposits which may exist in this vast country. TYPES OF DEPOSITS Two major types of deposits are currently being exploited in Bolivia; alluvial, and hard rock or lode deposits. Bolivia produces substantial tin from both types of deposit whereas virtually all Brazilian production to date has been from alluvial sources. Alluvial Deposits Brazil: The alluvial tin deposits of Brazil are located in river channels and flood plains adjacent to low mountain ranges. The terrain containing the tin placers is flat, marshy, and generally jungle covered. The major controls of alluvial cassiterite concentration are the ancient and present stream channels. The average tin concentration in the placers varies from 500 grams to approximately 1.0 kilograms per cubic meter. Tin reserves in the Rondonia field of Brazil have been estimated at 600,000 tons of fine tin. A bucketwheel suction dredge went into production in the Rondonia district in 1979, and four others have since been ordered. Several other gravel pump, and hand mining operations are also in production in this field. In addition to the Rondonia district, tin occurrences are known from Xingu, in Para state, and in the state of Minas Gerais. Bolivia: The alluvial deposits of Bolivia are somewhat more complex due to the variable geomorphology and abrupt topography. Conventional placer accumulations of cassiterite are found in many stream channels and intermontane basins surrounding the major lode tin producing regions. In addition to stream and valley placers, a group of deposits locally referred to as "Pallacos" or "Llamperas" which consist of colluvium, landslide debris and glacial moraine material, contain substantial tin reserves in some areas. The stream channel and intermontane basins contain the only deposits which are presently being exploited by mechanized methods. One dredge is working the stream channel below Cerro Rico de Potosi and another is operating in an intermontane basin southeast of the city of Oruro. Both of these dredges are operated by private companies. The average grade for these operations varies from 250 to 500 grams per cubic meter. The largest of the intermontane basin placers known at present is the Centenario deposit located adjacent to the Catavi lode deposit. This deposit contains approximately 170 million cubic meters of material with an average grade of about 150 grams per cubic meter. The "Pallacos" deposits are found on the slopes of mineralized areas and in glacial moraine. The mineralized material is generally completely unsorted, with tin and sometimes tungsten values distributed erratically throughout the entire mass. Most of these deposits are worked by small leasors or cooperatives; however, at least one mechanized washing plant is in operation southeast of Oruro. The size of these deposits may reach up to several million cubic yards. Grades are very erratic, but may range from 200 to 500 grams per cubic yard. In addition to the formal mining operations, virtually every drainage surrounding the major mines is being worked by independent&apos; miners utilizing hand mining and jig or pan concentration. The aggregate production from these operations is substantial. The
