THE safety of mine workers has received more attention from both State and Federal law-making bodies than any other industry, a fact that shows clearly the hazardous nature of the industry. The last, but by no means the least, of the measures adopted for the protection of mine workers, is workmen's compensation legislation. This is proving to be a powerful instrument for greater safety in the industries, from the fact that special stress is laid not on how the accident happened or who may have been responsible for it, but on how badly the employee is hurt by it. The injured person does not have to employ lawyers to prove his case, because the mere fact of his employment is proof of his right to compensation. The immediate effect of such legislation is the certainty confronting the mine operator that he must pay out large sums for every accident, regardless of its cause, thus adding materially to the cost of the production of his coal. This fact furnished to the operator the strongest incentive to reduce the causes of accidents; not that the operator has ever lacked reasonable consideration for the welfare of his employees and a proper humane interest in their safety, but his engrossment in earning his daily livelihood has been so great that he has not felt that he had the time to devote to the safety of the operation. This time he must now find because of the actual-cash value of the prevention of accidents in his mines. This agency alone proved inadequate to bring about a material improvement because operators have always been willing enough to improve safety conditions when possible to do so within reasonable limits of their financial ability. The requirement in the Workmen's Compensation Laws of several of the States, that the mine operator shall insure as a guarantee of his ability to meet his compensation obligations, has furnished the needed incentive, moral and financial, necessary to the prompt and effective dissemination of a more general knowledge of the causes and

A radioisotope tracer method combined with a suitable back-calculation method is proposed and evaluated for the determination of model simulation parameters in open-circuit continuous ball mills. The method essentially consists of using impulse and/or step injections of short-lived radioisotopes of the naturally occurring trace elements manganese and sodium. It is evaluated here on the basis of the minimum standard deviations of the product weight-size distributions. These minimum standard deviations are taken as those predicted by a Poisson distribution of the number of particles present in size fractions of the samples taken for analysis. Previously developed tanks-in-series lumped parameter models are used in the evaluation. The results indicate that the method is very promising.

Several mineralogical prospecting techniques are used in diamond exploration. Most are concerned with identifying indicator minerals such as pyrope garnet and magnesian ilmenite, which are derived from mantle xenoliths hosted by kimberlites. The first goal of such prospecting is to locate kimberlite intrusions; the second goal is to identify the diamond-bearing kimberlites. Explorationists have worked much less on the indigenous kimberlite phases. The kimberlitic opaque oxides, ilmenite and particularly spinels, promise to be useful in discriminating between intrusion episodes in identified kimberlites, and perhaps in the evaluation and prediction of diamond grades. Several petrologists have showed that spinel compositions and zoning patterns are specific to certain intrusive facies in South African and Canadian kimberlites. Careful evaluation may indicate a correlation between spinel parameters and diamond content.

The negative charges on diaphragms of quartz, tungstic oxides, stannic acid, acid dyestuffs, soaps, and glass have for a number of years been explained on the basis of chemical equilibria-a hydrogen ion or light metal ion passes into solution leaving the solid complex ion negatively charged. While there are a number of observations which indicate a proportionality between the ( potential and the streaming potential it should be recognized that all the experimental evidence thus far presented shows that if hydrogen ion concentration is kept at a constant value, electrokinetic phenomena are influenced by salts. The multivalent ions exert the greatest effect on the reduction of osmotic flow. In the interpretation of all electrokinetic data the assumption is made that the potential of the solid remains constant. That this is not true is evidenced by the values of ( potential for quartz in contact with conductivity water as reported by the several investigators and by the authors of this paper.

It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly some of the considerations that enter into the economics of so-called recycling, the generic designation of the relatively recently developed process by which a condensate† is separated from gas-distillate gas at high pressure and the residual gas returned to the reservoir. This subject necessarily embraces not only a discussion of factors that should be considered in projecting a recycling operation, such as estimating reserves, investment and operating costs, but also a comparison of condensate with other types of petroleum. The place of condensate in its relation to the total supply of crude oil is pointed out as well as certain logical methods of product disposal. The cost of drilling wells and lease maintenance is not pertinent to this discussion because income and revenue are in this paper confined to that retained by the plant or plant operator for supplying processing facilities for the gas. Before the development of recycling a great many gas-distillate gas fields in Louisiana and Texas provided no income to their owners. When gas was sold from these reservoirs it was accompanied by irretrievable losses of condensate in the formation. The understanding of the func- tion of retrograde condensation resulted in the introduction of a new commercial petroleum recovery process for these hitherto unexploited fields and now permits the conditioning of this type of wet gas field for the sale of dry gas therefrom without waste. Some Economic Factors The study of a gas-distillate field for possible exploitation necessarily involves the critical appraisal of a number of elements, chief of which will be discussed here: (I) estimate of distillate in place, (2) estimate of distillate that can be brought to the surface, (3) available market, (4) costs. The considerations affecting the estimating of distillate reserves in place are in the main subject to the same errors as are involved in determining dry gas reserves. Determinable data including acreage, sand thickness, reservoir pressure, reservoir temperature, porosity and connate water provide the basis for calculating the volume of gas in place. Ample allowance must be made for connate water, which may occupy from 20 to 35 per cent of the pore space of the sand. The factor of supercom-pressibility is to a considerable extent nullified by the reservoir temperature. It has been considered well advised to allow this factor to serve as a cushion. With the gas reserves calculated, it remains only to assay the distillate content of the gas. ABOUT 15 varieties, or modifications, of the best magnesium available were prepared and subjected to etching tests, then examined for microstructure. Of the 30-odd etching reagents that were tried, nearly half, mostly ammonium salts, etched the metal satisfactorily. The surfacing and etching of magnesium is shown to be a very simple and quick operation. The density and hardness of magnesium were determined. The most interesting new observations relate to the finding of the hexagonal etch figures, the crystal laminations, and the fact that the metal is plastic, cold, when restrained or quickly deformed. Under slowly applied pressure cold metal deforms slightly, then shears to fracture without plastic flow: The chief structural features of magnesium are presented in two reduced photographs and 30 photomicrographs.

LARGE deposits of titaniferous magnetite occur associated with anorthosite and gabbro in the Lake Sanford area, Essex County, New York. The ore, gabbro, and anorthosite show consanguineous relations. Anorthosite grades through gabbroic anorthosite into gabbro but is locally intruded by gabbro. Structural and petrographic evidence suggests that gabbro was differentiated from anorthosite by filter pressing. Field and laboratory study of ore occurrences indicates that an ore residuum concentrated in the gabbro through magmatic segregation by normal crystallization and flowage. Ore occurs as bands which grade into gabbro, and also as large masses which replace anorthosite. Ore in the gabbro is finer grained and richer in ilmenite than ore in anorthosite.

Creep of tantalum was measured at temperatures from 0.6 to 0.89 of the absolute melting temperature. The creep curves include first, second, and third stages. Steady-state creep rate depends on the fourth power of stress. The activation energy for creep throughout this temperature range is approximately 114 kcal per mole, measured by the aT technique. Subgrain formation occurs as a result of creep strain, and pile-up dislocation arrays are observed in etch-pit patterns. BECAUSE of its high melting point-which is exceeded only by those of rhenium and tungsten—and its high room-temperature ductility compared to most of the other high-melting-point metals, tantalum will undoubtedly be utilized in an increasing number of high-temperature applications. Alloying studies directed toward increased high-temperature strength must use data on tantalum itself as a base line in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the alloying additions. However, to date, no systematic study of creep of tantalum at temperatures above one-half of its melting point has been reported in the literature. Conway, Salyards, McCullough, and Flagella1 have measured linear creep rate of tantalum sheet as a function of stress, but at only one temperature, 2600°C. This paper describes a relatively thorough study of the high-temperature creep of tantalum. METHOD Material Tested. The commercially supplied, l/2-innch-diameter tantalum rod used for this work was electron-beam-melted, cold-forged, rolled, swaged, cleaned chemically, and vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1000°C, all by its manufacturer. The vendor's analysis included 60 to 170 ppm C, 3.4 to 4.2 ppm H, 60 to 80 ppm 0, 15 ppm N, and a hardness ranging from 66 to 81 Bhn and averaging 76 Bhn. Creep eimens Used. Two creep-tested specimens are shown in Fig. 1. The 1/4 in.-diameter gage section was 3/4 to 1 in. long, and terminated either at shoulders 5 mils high or at 20-mil-diameter tantalum wires spot-welded to the circumference of the gage section. Both kinds of shoulders served equally well as fiducial marks for optical strain measurements. The spot welding did not alter the creep behavior in any detectable way; the 5-mil- high sharp shoulders did not result in any detectable localized effect on the strain. Before testing, each tensile bar was first mechanically polished -id then electrochemically polished according to the method referred to by Forgeng2 as the "Thompson Ramo Woolridge" method, which was suitable for tantalum after small adjustments of technique were made. Two tensile bars tested at low stresses had 1/8-in.-diameter gage sections and utilized only the weight of the bottom grip for the applied load. Although these diameters were smaller than were desired for other reasons, applied loads were known with high precision in the tests in which they were used. Testing Procedure. Two different constant-load creep-testing machines were employed, one of which has been described by Smith, Olson, and Brown.3 In both, the tensile bar is held vertically on the axis of a cylindrical tungsten tube or screen heater by threaded tungsten grips. The tensile bars and associated grips are heated by radiation from the incandescent heaters, which are heated by their own electrical resistance. Both testing machines use pins to hold the bottom grips in place. The load is applied to a tensile bar through hanging weights, a constant force-multiplication lever, a pull rod sealed to the chamber lid, and a top grip threaded to the pull rod at one end and to the tensile bar at the other. In one machine, the vacuum seal is a bellows with a low spring constant; in the other, the seal involves a rotating "0 ring". With the latter, rotation is converted to translation with a crank shaft, so that elongation of the tensile bar is accommodated with no change of tensile load. The incandescent tensile bar is viewed by an external optical system through slots in the radiation shields and heater, and an enlarged image is projected on a ground-glass screen. Gage-length measurements are made on this image with cathetometers on traveling microscopes. With regard to creep-test results, the two machines were identical. Thorium oxide coatings were applied to the threaded ends of the tensile bars, to prevent diffusion welding of the tensile bars to the grips during testing. Specimen temperatures were measured with an L. & N. optical pyrometer which had been calibrated against a standard carbon arc, and were corrected fir window absorption by calculation from the measured spectral transmittance of the quartz observation windows. Longitudinal temperature gradients in the tensile-bar gage length and temperature drifts during testing were detectable but small, and were estimated to be 10°C or less. When the Age of Machinery was suddenly thrust upon civilization about the beginning of the 19th century, an unprecedented demand for mineral resources sprang up. This demand brought about the rapid development of the known ore deposits and the discovery of such other deposits as could be encountered by energetic and canny prospectors. Thus in the countries now reasonably accessible nearly all orebodies have been located except those which are totally concealed even from the eyes and "senses " of experienced and expert prospectors. The high rate of exhaustion of known ore deposits and the necessity of looking farther and farther ahead for raw materials as a matter of insurance on the stupendous capital outlays involved in mining, development, and conversion operations, have resulted in exceptional activity in three different fields of effort. The first is purely geographic. Prospectors are now penetrating the few hitherto inaccessible regions in the hope of stumbling upon exposed ore deposits or locating visible indications of their presence. The second is chemical. Industrial chemists and metallurgists are seeking to facilitate the exploitation of lower grade ores or to find methods of recovering valuable metals from common substances. In the third field of effort lie the activities of the economic geologist and the mining engineer, who endeavor to locate concealed ore deposits which would remain hidden from the prospector no matter how expert or conscientious he might be. Obviously the task which such a man must face is both exacting and indefinite, and the tools which he has heretofore been permitted to bring to it are, for the most part, abstract—a knowledge of certain fundamental principles and processes involved in the origin, occurrence, structure, and distribution of deposits of natural resources and of the rocks which form the environments of those deposits; and a process of reasoning by analogy supplemented by the use of the diamond drill, or such artificial exposure as the test pit, trench, shaft, or tunnel.

The effects of various elements on the activity coefficient of carbon in liquid iron have been studied by two experimental methods: 1) equilibration with controlled mixtures of CO and CO2; 2) the solubility of graphite in the melt. Activity coefficient of C is increased by Al, Co, Cu, Ni, P, Si, S, and Srz. It is decreased by Cr, Cb, Mn, Mo, W, and V. THE thermodynamic properties of the iron-carbon binary system have now been fairly well established, although some uncertainty remains with respect to the exact location of some of the phase boundaries. The activity of carbon in ferrite and in austenite has been measured in the classic researches of R. P. smith' while similar measurements by Richardson and ~ennis, and by Rist and chipman3 have established the values of the activity of carbon in liquid iron up to 1760°C. On the other hand, our knowledge of the effects of alloying elements on the activity of carbon in dilute solutions is restricted to Smith's experiments on systems Fe-C-Mn and Fe-C-Si in the austenitic range and to some more recent experiments of schwarzman4 in the a range. In addition there have been a number of determinations of the effects of various elements on the solubility of graphite in liquid iron, and from these the corresponding effect in saturated solution may be obtained. The purpose of the present study was to extend the investigation of the liquid system to include the effects of alloying elements upon the activity coefficient of carbon, principally in dilute solutions. Equilibrium measurements were made on the reaction C + co, = 2 CO (g) The prepared mixture of CO and CO,, diluted with argon, flowed over the surface of the liquid metal which, after several hours' exposure to the gas, was quenched and anqlyzed. As in the earlier experiments, the principal experimental difficulty was in the deposition of carbon on the parts of the furnace at temperatures slightly below that of the metal bath. In order to minimize this difficulty, the ratio (Pco)2 /PCo2 was restricted to values not much higher than 100 atm, and correspondingly the carbon concentration in the metal seldom exceeded 0.30 pct. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The method and apparatus were essentially the same as used by Rist and Chipman.3 The gaseous mixture consisting of highly purified CO, CO,, and argon, each controlled by a flowmeter, was led into the furnace and passed over the surface of the liquid-iron melt which was heated and stirred by high-frequency induction. One slight modification was made in that a molybdenum susceptor was placed outside the crucible for the sake of uniformity of temperature and to combat the tendency of carbon to precipitate on the crucible wall. Pure alumina crucibles approximately 25 mm ID were used. The charge consisting of about 30 g was made up of electrolytic iron, the alloying element to be added, and enough graphite to supply slightly more or less than the anticipated equilibrium carbon concentration. All metals used were of high purity. Metallic chromium, columbium, and vanadium were from special lots supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. Tin, copper, molybdenum, tungsten, cobalt, and nickel were of purest commercial grades. The electrolytic iron, after being cut to the proper size for charging, was prereduced by hydrogen at 850° to 1000°C to remove surface oxidation. The oxygen content of the reduced material was 0.002 pct. This treatment made it easy to control the carbon content of the initial melt. The charge was melted under the gas mixture to be used for the entire run. In some earlier melts the charge was melted under a stream of argon, but in this case some alumina was reduced from the crucible, and the aluminum thus absorbed in the melt was subsequently oxidized with the formation of a solid film of alumina on the surface of the melt. AS another safeguard against film formation, overheating of the bath was carefully avoided. All runs were made at a temperature of 1560°C. Under experimental conditions a charge of pure iron picked up 0.17 pct C in 3 hr and 0.23 pct C in 6 hr under an atmosphere for which the equilibrium concentration of carbon is 0.27. It is clear that the time required to reach equilibrium from an initially carbon-free melt would be very great. For this reason each experiment was started with a melt of known carbon concentration not far above or below the expected equilibrium value, and each melt was held at temperature for a period of at least 5 hr. Under such circumstances it was possible to chart the approach to equilibrium from both high-carbon and low-carbon materials. Temperature was controlled by frequent optical observation and adjustment and the metls were timed in such a way that the final 2 hr occurred during a time when electric power was steady; for example, 2 to 4 pm or after 11 pm. In submitting an additional contribution to the discussion on ore-deposits in the recent volumes of the Transactions, it is my desire to adhere closely to matters of material importance as affecting the actual processes. Judging from the discussion by Professor Van Hise, and from one or two reviews or other articles by associates of his in geological work, the impression seems to prevail that, in so far as my paper* referred to his masterly essay, I was guilty of misconceptions regarding both the part attributed by him in it to the igneous rocks and the ubiquitous presence of the ground-water. I should regret extremely to be wanting in these particulars or to have misunderstood one for whose great services in this and other branches of geology no one has a higher esteem than myself. I have, however, in the most careful way, and with these points in mind, read his essay again, and, taking it as a whole, I cannot gain any different impression of relative magnitudes than the one first received. The importance of the igneous phenomena and the restrictive influence of the processes described by " cementation " in their effect upon the ground-water, as set forth in Professor Van Hise's "Discussion" (Trans., xxxi., 292), impress me as being in very marked contrast with the same things in his first essay. If the point seems to anyone of sufficient importance, it can easily be decided by reading the originals. My paper was the result of some years of observation, reading and reflection, and was meant to be an independent contribution, controversial only in some subordinate particulars. The limiting concentrations of carbon and oxygen which may CO-exist at equilibrium in liquid iron are important in determining the degree to which liquid steel may be refined before it is deoxidized. Most refining processes depend upon the oxidation of a highly carburized iron which invariably results in contaminating the steel with oxygen. The oxygen thus introduced presents many problems to the refiner, who in turn has attempted to rid the steel of this impurity by deoxidation witch elements such as manganese, silicon and aluminum. The importance of the limiting concentrations of carbon and oxygen is accentuated in view of a number of recent researches which have indicated in many instances the existence of relations between oxide inclusions and dissolved oxygen and physical properties and chemical behavior of steel. The determination of the equilibrium concentrations of carbon and oxygen existing in iron under steelmaking conditions is obviously of fundamental importance. It has been generally assumed that the product of the equilibrium concentrations of carbon and oxygen in liquid iron is a constant and that this product is directly proportional to the carbon monoxide pressure in equilibrium with the liquid iron. Hertyl.2 has computed values for this product based on open-hearth data which are all in the neighborhood of 0.01 to 0.03 (per cent. FeO X per cent. C) for temperatures in the vicinity of 1550" to 1600" C. and one atmosphere pressure. Kinzel and Egan % have attempted to determine the value of this product by exposing liquid iron to carbon monoxide at one atmosphere pressure. The value reported by them was 0.0005 at 1550" C. In order to apply certain equations to the rate of carbon elimination in the open-hearth process, Feild4 found it necessary to assume a value of 0.0102 at 1580" C. for this

Up to 1909 the American public had little knowledge of, or interest in, potash. Some remembered that it had to do with soft soap and sore throat, but further they knew not. In 1909-10, the German-American potash war, and the publicity attending hostilities, brought home to America the knowledge that potash was an important article of commerce; that Germany monopolized its production and distribution, and exercised all the prerogatives attending complete control. The present war, with its transportation embargo, has again directed attention to Germany's strength as a potash producer and her present unfortunate situation as a distributor. As a consequence, the search for potash takes on new life and it again becomes a subject of general interest. My first knowledge of potash came from a study of the German potash exhibit at the World's Fair in 1893. This investigation led to the recommendation that Armour & Co. engage in the manufacture of commercial fertilizers and the fertilizer branch was organized early in 1894. From then to now "potash" has been a live subject. Two and eight-tenths per cent. of the earth's crust consists of potassium oxide. It is an important constituent of feldspar, granite, and other igneous rocks. Potash is valuable commercially in a water-soluble form. In igneous rocks it is locked in so tight that it is of little value and no utilization in a commercial way has been made of these insoluble forms. Potash in water-soluble form is found in large deposits in Germany; in smaller deposits in Austria and Spain; and in brines in some of our Western arid basins. The deposits in Germany, Austria, and Spain are concentrations from sea waters containing potash derived from the decomposition of potash-bearing rocks.

THE widespread occurrence of manganese in low grade oxide and carbonate ores not amenable to mechanical concentration has led to extensive investigations of hydrometallurgical methods for producing a pure manganese compound suitable for further treatment. Manganese carbonate is the preferable compound. This product when fully crystalline and of not too fine crystal size is easily filtrable and stable in air. It can be converted to other compounds such as the oxides by heating in air or can be reacted with acids for producing salts. A useful hydrometallurgical process must produce relatively concentrated solutions that can be purified easily, reagents must be cyclically used, and heat requirements must be small. Neither the ammonium sulphate nor sulphur dioxide leaching processes that have been tested extensively fulfill these 'requirements. Other hereto-fore proposed processes have obvious limitations and have not been tried on a large scale. The present process is based on the discovery by the writer of a new group of aqueous manganese-ammonia complex solutions highly concentrated in ammonia, which permit rapid solution of manganous oxide to concentrations of 80 to 100 g Mn per liter and from which a fully crystalline, easily filterable manganese carbonate is precipitated by the addition of carbon dioxide and partial ammonia removal. Although the process may be carried out with many ammonium salts, commercial advantages dictate the use of ammonium carbamate, which is obtained when CO2 is passed into concentrated aqueous solutions of ammonia. If the carbamate is used, the only reagents, ammonia and C02, are volatile and may therefore be recovered from solutions and residues by heating, thus eliminating washing and extensive evaporation. Impurities are controlled easily as most metal oxides are either insoluble in the lixiviant or fail to precipitate with the manganese carbonate. Others are controlled by sulphide addition. The process has been tested extensively on a small scale on a wide variety of ores; including Three Kids, Artillery Peak, Cuyuna, and Chamberlain; as repre-

The plastic deformation of slender single crystals of zinc has been described in some detail in the paper by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid,' which has become a classic, and also by one of the present authors in a somewhat shorter account. 2 The study of single-crystal zinc is termed classical because zinc single crystals offer, perhaps, the best material yet available for the study of atomic behavior during deformation and the effect known as "strengthening" in metals. A considerable amount of additional work has also been done on single-crystal zinc, but as it is not closely related to the present paper it will not be considered. Throughout all the former work, the mechanism of plastic deformation first described by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid has been assumed to hold. This may be said to offer the strongest confirmation of its correctness. Even so, the picture of the process has never been as completely portrayed as is desirable. The first object of the present paper is to describe work that has been done in this field, and which is even yet being carried on, in the hope that a more complete picture may be obtained. Mathewson and Phillips3 have recently described a new mechanism of the deformation of zinc based on their study of large rectangular crystals. One of their conclusions was that deformation produced twinning with a rotation of some of the basal planes into positions 94" removed from their original position; a position almost the same as that of the prismatic planes before twinning. A second conclusion was that fracture occurred along these basal planes in their new position, and, therefore that fractures previously regarded as prismatic were in reality basal. Such findings are of great significance and they raise a question as to the generality of such behavior. Professor Mathewson's opinion is that even the slender cylindrical single crystals behave in the same manner as his large rectangular crystals when strained by simple tension.

The surface charge, electrokinetic potential and surface conductance were studied for silica, alumina and rutile as the functions of PH and concentration of 1-1 electrolyte solutions. The adsorption potentials of potential-determining and specifically adsorbed ions were calculated from isoelectric and zero charge points on the basis of Stern equation and thermodynamic description. From surface conductance and charge data the mean ionic mobilities in double layer were estimated. The results give some information about the real structure of oxide-electrolyte interface and gel-layer concept.

Precision lattice-constant measurements have been widely used in the study of cubic solid solutions but as yet have been rarely applied to noncubic solid solutions. (See, however, references I and 2.) With the high precision at present attainable in the measurement of lattice constants, the X-ray method should be readily applicable to noncubic solid solutions. In the work reported here, hexagonal close-packed magnesium was used as the solvent and either lead, bismuth or gold as the solute. In the magnesium-lead and magnesium-bismuth systems the a and c lattice constants were determined as a function of composition, densities were calculated from these lattice-constant data, these theoretical densities were compared with those directly measured and the solid solubility limit was determined on quenched specimens over a considerable range of temperature. In the magnesium-gold system, the solid solubility is very small but we have obtained an indirect check on the solubility limit previously reported. Materials and Preparation oF the Alloys The magnesium used was obtained from the Aluminum Company of America and was 99.987 per cent pure. Impurities as reported On the label were: Fe, Al, 0'004 per cent; Si, 0.009 per cent; Zn, trace; Cu, Pb, nil. The bismuth was Merck's analytical grade, minimum purity 99.95 per cent. Maximum impurities as listed on the label were: Fe, 0.008 per cent; Pb, 0.010 per cent; Ag, 0.010 per cent; Cu, 0.005 per cent; Sn, 0.003 per cent; Sb, 0.00; As, 0.000; S, 0.01 per cent. The gold was purified by double precipitation with sulphur dioxide. The lattice constants of these three metals have been previously reported.3 The lead used was test lead, silver free and with a maximum of 0.10 per cent heavy metal impurities. The lattice constant 01 this lead has been measured and found to be 4.94057 ± 0.00016 at 25°C. The alloys were prepared by melting together weighed amounts of the constituent metals in magnesia-lined alundum crucibles under an atmosphere of hydrogen purified by passing over magnesium heated to 500°C. The magnesia lining prevented contamination 01 the alloys with aluminum. Vacuum melting could not be used because of the volatility of magnesium. A high-frequency induction furnace was used for the melting operation and the stirring action of the current resulted in thorough mixing of the constituents. The melts were allowed to freeze in the crucible, the ingots obtained weighed about 10 grams. An extremely thin white film formed on the surface of the melts, sometimes covering only a part of the exposed surface.
