WHEN a plastically deformed metal is heated to a certain temperature, it undergoes a complete change in microstructure, the consequence of which is a marked alteration of mechanical properties such as hardness, strength and ductility. This change in microstructure occurs by recrystallization and is a process involving the formation and growth of strain-free nuclei in the deformed matrix. These nuclei continue to form with time and grow until a new grain structure replaces the cold-worked structure. The formation of the nuclei in the deformed sheet of 1 per cent silicon ferrite is illustrated in Fig. 1. If a recrystallization is conducted isothermally, a measurement of the fraction of the matrix recrystallized plotted against time leads to an isothermal recrystallization curve, first established in 1942.1 Such recrystallization curves are shown in Fig. 4. These curves show that the recrystallization of a cold-worked metal is best considered as a rate process rather than a time independent process such as is suggested by the improperly named and misleading recrystallization diagrams involving deformation, temperature, and grain size. 2-5 Any study of the rate of recrystallization resolves itself into a study of the component rates of nucleation and growth. The previous paper' provided an account of the determination of the rates of nucleation; N, the number of nuclei formed per unit time per unit of unrecrystallized area, and growth, G, the radial growth in unit time, in the recrystallization of silicon ferrite (1 per cent Si). A method was developed to furnish experimental data for evaluating the effect of the recrystallization variables on N and G. The mathematical analysis for the derivation of the isothermal recrystallization curve was developed for a two-dimensional case (in thin sheets where the diameter of the recrystallized grain is greater than the sheet thickness). The present paper is a continuation of the study of recrystallization of 1 per cent silicon ferrite begun in 1942.1 In this work the effect of the factors deformation, temperature, grain size, composition, and recovery is studied with respect to the rates of nucleation and growth. At the same time it is shown how the cooperation of N and G affects the isothermal recrystallization curve. The study of these variables on N and G has a definite bearing on the mechanism of recrystallization and should lay a foundation for a rational theory on the subject. PROCEDURE The procedure used in these experiments was essentially the same as that described previously but in certain details some changes were made in the interests of speed. With few exceptions, the procedure is the same for the study of all the variables. Where the procedure is different from standard manipulations attention is called to this fact.

Y.-Immediately after the creation of the Naval Consulting Board, Admiral Strauss, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance of the Navy, told members of the Board that the most important problem for the scientists to solve was erosion in large guns. The Navy, for years, had been working on the problem with marked suceess, but there was much yet remaining to be accomplished. As Chairman of the Committee on Ordnance and Explosives of the Naval Consulting Board, I communicated with several experts in the manufacture of steel, principal among whom was Prof. Howe. He generously agreed to help in every way possible, and the work that he has done and the time that he has spent upon it can he appreciated only by reading his paper. Prof. Howe asked for some rings. from a, certain 14-in. gun which Admiral Strauss had mentioned in particular, and in which, he had informed us, at each shot the bore of the gun, was enlarged about 0.001 in.,' and that after a relatively small number of rounds it was considerably eroded. It has puzzled scientists for a long time to account for the peculiar erosive effect produced by the powder gases in a gun, arid: what Prof. Howe has done in his paper is worthy of Sherlock Holmes. He is a veritable Sherlock Holmes of science.

The Duval Corp. porphyry copper deposits at Copper Canyon and Copper Basin, though widely separated, form an econornic unit requiring integrated exploitation. Contrasts in mineralization, host rocks, and mode of occurrence present unique mining and milling problems. Mixed oxide-sulfide ore is treated in extensive dump leaching facilities in both areas. Complex Cu-Au-Ag ore is treated in a 4000-tpd mill at Copper Canyon. In both areas, hypogene metallization occurs within large aureoles of metamoiphism and hydrothennal alteration related to quartz monzonite intrusions of mid-Tertiary age. Supergene processes fitrther altered the rocks and enriched the hypogene protore. At Copper Canyon, hypogene copper and iron sulfides with gold and silver occur in fractures, as partial replacement of favorable beds, and as disseminations in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The lower part of the Pennsylvanian Battle formation was a particularly favorable host. Metallization occurs to a lesser extent in quartz monzonite. Metal zoning is well-developed. The deposits at Copper Basin consist principally of supergene copper minerals in arenites of the Cambrian Harmony formation. Oxidation of hypogene copper and iron sulfides in tactite zones has formed at least two commercial deposits; intersections of fractures with favorable beds exerted important ore controls. Recently, the Copper Canyon and Copper Basin properties of Duval Corp. have been added to the list of porphyry copper mines in Nevada, marking the first new copper open pit in this state in 15 years. A study has been made of the effect of unidirectional solidification on the creep behavior, stress-rupture properties, and thermal shock resistance of four nickel-base superalloys. The alloys Mar-MZOO, B-1900, IN 100, and TRW 1900 show improved rupture ductility and thermal shock resistance when tested with the columnar grains parallel to the major stress axis during test. The relative improvement in creep-rupture properties depends on the intrinsic strength of the alloy, a property which depends on composition, heat-treatnient, and crystallographic orientation. The data clarifies some of the factors affecting the properlies of the cast nickel-base superalloy. COMPONENTS designed for high-temperature use have, in recent years, been fabricated by precision casting techniques using nickel-base alloys developed specifically for use in the conventionally cast condition. This development was a result of both the increasing complexity of the component and the recognition that high-temperature strength was incompatible with workability. The use of castings can be economically favorable, but, more important, the recent complex designs of air-cooled gas turbine blades and vanes in alloys which possess the necessary high-temperature strength cannot be forged. Common modes of failure of high-temperature components are excessive creep, creep rupture, and thermal fatigue. If rupture occurs then the mechanism is usually by inter crystalline cracking along those grain boundaries oriented transverse to the major stress axis. In the stronger alloys, rapid propagation of intercrystalline cracks result in apparent premature failure demonstrated by the absence of third stage creep in a creep-rupture test and low rupture ductility. Tensile ductility shows a similar trend, that is, decreasing ductility with increase in strength. It is not surprising, therefore, that increases in creep strength have only been obtained with a loss in resistance to thermal shock, a property which shows a dependence on tensile ductility. VerSnyder and ~uard' showed that the application of unidirectional solidification to a brittle Ni-Cr-A1 alloy both improved the rupture life of the alloy and increased rupture ductility. Since this casting method results in columnar grains, it appeared that the solution to the lack of ductility in nickel-base alloy components was the elimination of the source of failure, namely the transverse grain boundaries. This concept was recently developed2 to produce cast-to-size gas-turbine blades and vanes consisting entirely of columnar grains oriented parallel to the major stress axis of the component. Not only did the process impart increased rupture life and ductility to the components, but it also increased their resistance to thermal shock. During this development, the effect of unidirectional solidification on the properties of several alloys was investigated. The resulting data allows certain conclusions to be drawn regarding the factors affecting the creep and stress-rupture properties of the cast nickel-base superalloy and also its resistance to thermal shock. Detailed information was obtained on the alloys Mar-MZOO, B-1900, In 100, and TRW 1900. The composition of the alloys studied are shown in Table I. MATERIAL PREPARATION AND TESTING The conventionally cast alloys are cast as +-in.-diam bars in innoculated shell molds under conditions designed to maintain control of grain size. Unidirec-tionally solidified casting were produced in the form of 3-in.-diam ingots. Specimens from the latter were machined such that the axes of the columnar grains were parallel with the axis of the test bar, except in certain cases where the transverse properties of the material were being evaluated. The specimens were tested in an axial loading creep machine.' Temperatures were measured with thermocouples, attached just outside each end of the gage length, to assure uniform temperature along the entire specimen. Chromel/alumel thermocouples were used up to 1800"F and Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples above 1800"F. The specimen temperature was recorded and maintained within i2"F throughout the test. Creep extensions were measured automatically with extenso-meters attached to ridges on the specimen and recorded continuously using linear variable differential transformers and multipoint recording equipment. MICROSTRUCTURE The microstructures of transverse sections of the four alloys studied are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 1 shows optical micrographs of the alloys, both in the conventionally cast and unidirectionally solidified conditions. Each alloy displays a cored dendritic structure, a distribution of MC carbide, and the presence of the y — y' eutectic constituent.~ In the case of IN 100 and B-1900, Fig. 1 indicates that in these specimens the eutectic is degenerate. That is, it consists only of y' pools indicating that the y constituent has been solutioned during the cooling period after solidification. The major effect of unidirectional solidification on the microstructures of the alloys is a tendency to promote a more dendritic form of MC carbide and an increase in dendrite arm spacing, both effects being a result of the slower solidification rate in the unidirectional solidification technique. This paper illustrates the application of geostatistics to a roll front type uranium deposit located in Wyoming. The steps involved in calculation of experimental variograms, variogram modeling, and verification of the resulting models are described in detail. The resulting spherical variogram models for grade thickness and thickness show strong geometrical anisotropies. The major axis of anisotropy for both variables is approximately parallel to the axis of the roll front and the minor axis perpendicular to the roll. This model confirms the technique of drilling "fences" across the roll front, where the drilling is much closer together than the fences along the roll.

IN discussing the problem of abnormal magnetic polarization, C. A. Heiland1? emphasized the unfortunate fact that our knowledge of the geological and physical conditions relating to such occurrences is very limited and that a more detailed insight into their physical causes would be extremely valuable for interpreting measured anomalies. He also pointed out that to arrive at quantitative physical formulas that would express the conditions that cause abnormal polarization many more occurrences of the kind would have to be recorded. The first part of this paper is a contribution to such descriptions.

METALLURGISTS have been studying the chem-ical behavior of sulfur in steelmaking for many years in order to have a better control of the sulfur content of finished steel. During the refining period in the open hearth, molten steel is separated from a gas phase by molten slag. Chemical reactions occur principally at the slag-metal interface and at the slag-gas interface. A need for physical-chemical investigations of reactions between sulfur-bearing gases and steelmaking slags was recognized some time ago.'.' From the early work, it can be qualitatively concluded that increased sulfur content and low partial pressure of oxygen in the gas phase favor the passage of sulfur from gas to slag. Using radioactive sulfur S Koch and Fink' have demonstrated the rapid rate of exchange of sulfur between gas and slag in an open hearth furnace. Gurry and Darken and Darken and Shields (as reported by Derge and Marshall') have equilibrated lime-iron oxide slags with SO—O2 gas mixtures. The major conclusion from the reported results is that sulfur content increases with increasing lime content in lime-iron oxide slags equilibrated with a gas of high oxygen pressure (10-2). The data were interpreted as indicating the presence of SO, and S,O, ions. Richardson and Fincham' have conducted the most extensive experimental study of sulfur equilibria between gas and slag. Their results confirmed many of the conclusions drawn from calculations of Richardson" and Withers. Richardson and Fincham's data fitted very well into the sulfur scheme represented by the reactions 1/2 s2 (g) + (0) melt - 1/202(g)+ (S) melt [II 1/2 S, (g) + 3/2 O (g) + (0) melt - (SO,) melt. [2] At oxygen pressures greater than 10 to 10 they found that reaction Eq. 2 was predominant while reaction Eq. 1 was controlling at oxygen pressures less than 10." to 10.". The slag compositions and gas mixtures used in their investigations were different from those used in the present study. Wherever possible, comparison has been made between their results and these, and agreement is excellent. It is evident that the distribution of sulfur between slag and gas depends upon the oxygen pressure of the gas. In FeO slags, a change in oxygen pressure produces a change in ferric oxide content, and a knowledge of this equilibrium is a prerequisite to studies of sulfur distribution. The data are found in the work of Darken and Gurry" on the FeO system and the more recent experiments of Gurry and Darken" and of Larson and Chipman" on FeO slags containing lime and silica. The effect of oxygen pressure on the ratio Fe /(Fe" + Fe ), the so-called j-ratio, reported by these investigators will be used in interpreting the results which follow. Experimental Method The purpose of the experimental program was to determine the equilibrium sulfur content in slags exposed to gases of known oxygen and sulfur pres- sures. The slag compositions selected for study were from the lime-silica-iron oxide system. Additions of magnesia were made to some of the slags. Apparatus—The apparatus used by Larson and Chipman was modified slightly to accommodate the addition of SO2 to the gas mixtures. As in their work, slag samples of 0.5 to 2.0 g were held at temperature (lcc) in platinum crucibles under a steady stream of gas, 100 to 200 ml per min, for several hours and then rapidly lowered to the bottom of the furnace where they were quenched in mercury. The relation between the course, or path, of the fracture of metals and alloys, produced in service or as a result of certain laboratory tests, and the crystalline units of which such materials are composed is of utmost importance. The fracture of normal material is, in general, intracrystalline, i.e., it consists of a break across the grains rather than of a separation between them. An interorystalline fracture indicates either that the metal is of very inferior quality or that the break occurred under very unusual conditions, e.g., at a very high temperature. The usual mechanical tests, when applied to metals of the type that breaks with an intercrystalline fracture, merely measure the coherence of adjacent grains for one another and reveal little as to the real properties of the metal itself. Even such a soft plastic substance as lead, under suitable conditions, may be rendered so weak and brittle that the metal can be easily crumbled into powder by the fingers although the constituent grains have lost none of the intrinsic properties of lead. Various erroneous explanations of this behavior of lead have appeared in the scientific literature, the change being described usually as an allotropic one. The importance, in an industrial sense, of a proper explanation of this type of the corrosion of lead justifies the description of the type of metal deterioration that follows. Corroded Lead Sheathing In Figs. 1 and 2 are shown two typical specimens of corroded lead sheathing selected from materials submitted to the Bureau of Standards for examination. Fig; 1 shows a section of the sheathing of an aerial cable; Fig. 2, that of the lead covering of a subterranean feeder-line of an electric light system. In this case the deterioration had proceeded to a much great'er extent than in the case shown in Fig. 1 so that certain portions of the metal could easily be crumbled into a coarse gray powder by the fingers. These ores are of two classes, Bessemer and non-Bessemer, existing in separate, though adjoining, beds. Both are carbonates, with small admixtures of oxides and other combinations. To prepare them for market they are roasted in kilns, which have already been described by Mr. John Birkinbine at the Troy Meeting, October, 1883 (Trans., xii., 378). Concerning their size, arrangement, etc., I need, therefore, only repeat that they are 60 feet in height; have wrought-iron shells 24 feet in diameter; are lined with fire-brick, and supported by cast-iron mantel and columns.

Its success during the past year has been noteworthy. Through its instrumentality many valuable papers were presented at the Cleveland and New York meetings, followed by animated and productive discussions, while the attendance of iron and steel men at both meetings was remarkably large and representative.

The question arises as to whether any increase in capacity accompanied the 11-ton addition. It is hardly conceivable that all of the balls making up the 11-ton addition were sterile. However, as the work done in the ball mill is not by kilo-watthours per se or balls per se but by kilowatthour-balls, it is possible that the kilowatthourballs in the mill before the 11-ton addition had a different amperage, voltage or robustage than those in the mill after the addition and that the overall outcome was that equal work was done before and after the addition. The authors can keep the efficiency that they got with the 45 pct volume 1-in. ball charge and get additional capacity by putting more kilowatthourballs to work in the form of the addition of 11 tons of 2-in. balls to the present ball charge, and subsequent makeup additions by weight of 20 pct 2-in. balls and 80 pct 1-in. balls. J. F. Myers (authors' reply)-—Mr. Garms points his finger at the 11 tons of "sterile" balls added to the Tri-cone mill. A fact so interesting to us that we felt it should be reported. Clearly, ball slippage at the existing mill speed prevented any further transfer of power from the shell to the ball mass. We agree that the kilowatthourballs would increase, were we charging rough 2-in. balls as suggested by Mr. Garms. The assumption is, of course, that we would get a corresponding increase in work done. Our reported data (CIME meeting, Vancouver, 1946) shows a gain of work accomplished of 7.6 pct as we decreased the ball size from 2 in. to 11/2 in. and a further gain of work accomplished of 2.1 pct when we went from 11/2 in. to 1 in. The small ball results reported by H. R. Banks at Chapman Camp are also very convincing. In the case of 2-in. balls they would take the conventional ball path and start cascading. Instability of rock slopes may occur by failure along pre- existing structural discontinuities, by failure through intact material or by failure along a surface formed partly along discontinuities and partly through intact material. Although certain fundamental failure modes are recognized, the mechanisms of slope failure are varied and complex. Such mechanisms are governed by the engineering geology conditions of the rock mass, which are almost always unique to a particular site. An understanding of failure mechanisms requires a knowledge of the physical, mechanical and strength properties of the intact material and discontinuities which make up the rock mass, as well as the structural geology and hydrogeology. These engineering geology parameters also must be evaluated with respect to the slope geometry to determine failures which are kinematically possible. Only after obtaining a reasonable appreciation of the possible failure modes can a rational mechanical stability analysis be carried out. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional failure mechanisms should be considered in assessing the design of rock slopes. Simple analyses methods are used initially to identify those possible failures which could control slope stability. More complex and detailed analyses usually are required for a few critical failure modes which could control stability, or where a more complex type of failure mechanism is envisaged. Complex failure mechanisms are usually identified when assessing previous slope failures. More detailed information concerning slope geometry and engineering geology parameters must be acquired where analyses must be more rigorous.

THE application of hydrocarbon equilibrium data to various problems encountered in refining and in natural gasoline recovery is an old and well established practice. Both generalized data and data on specific hydro-carbon systems have been made available by a number of investigators. More recently such data have been applied to the relations governing the separation of oil and gas both in the reservoir and at the surface. Most of the applications to production problems, however, have been based upon examinations of surface samples of oil and gas. This paper describes a technique that has been used satisfactorily in a number of cases to calculate directly from the hydrocarbon analysis of and auxiliary laboratory data on a subsurface sample of the reservoir fluid the behavior of the oil and gas during the various stages of separation at the surface incident to production.

A vapor-pressure method was used to extend the activity measurements to 900°C, allowing the maximum of the immiscibility gap to be estimated by thermodynamic calculation. Data on the mono-tectic and eutectic points compare favorably with previously existing work. SEVERAL long-standing methods have been in use for the study of phase diagrams from measurement of the activities of the component metals.' The use of thermodynamic analysis for interpreting equilibria data is comparatively recent, however. Such analysis is usually undertaken by first evaluating the principal thermodynamic functions as, for example, the enthalpy, entropy, and free energy of the alloy constituents. These, in turn, quite often can be correlated with the interatomic potential energies and atomistics of the system, from which a clearer understanding of the causes leading to deviations from ideal behavior is gained. The present study of liquid Pb-Zn alloys is concerned with a determination of these quantities by electrode-potential and vapor-pressure measurements, using these values in calculations involving phase equilibria and to obtain a theoretical insight into an alloy system exhibiting strong positive deviations from ideal metallic solution. A considerable portion of the previously reported work is based on thermal analysis. Supplemented by optical studies of solid alloys, these techniques have revealed the essential nature of the immiscible mixtures that are formed. It is difficult, however, using the phase-
