The strong temperature dependence of the flow stress of bcc metals has prompted considerable interest and controversy concerning the rate-controlling influence of the Peierls' mechanism upon deformation in metals.18"21 Dorn and Rajnak" recently offered a criterion for Peierls' deformation utilizing a line-energy model of a dislocation to estimate the saddle-point activation energy, for the nucleation of a pair of kinks as a function of applied stress and the height and shape of the peierls9- barrier. It was found that Un/2Uk, where 2Uk is the excess energy of a kink pair, was a unique function of where is the effective stress and 7p is the Peierls' stress as defined in Fig. 20. The relationship found by Dorn and Rajnak between is given by the solid line of Fig. 21. may be expressed in terms of the temperature of test, T, and the athermal temperature, T,, defined in Fig. 20. Considering the strain-rate, 9, of deformation for a thermally activated process to be given by where fo is nearly a constant, it is seen that and the theoretical relationship of Fig. 21 may be examined with readily obtainable experimental parameters. THERE seems to be in the public mind, and even in the minds of some coal-operators not experienced in mines subject to dust-explosions, a feeling that there has been something mysterious at the bottom of a number of recent American colliery-explosions. It has been declared in cases of accidents in mines regarded as particularly well equipped, in which every preventive precaution was said to have been taken, that the explosions were incomprehensible, and resulted from causes beyond the present knowledge of the practical coal-operator. But it is safe to say that no explosion has taken place which could not be explained by reasons well understood by most operators. The LT. S. Geological Survey Test Laboratory, recently inaugurated at Pittsburg for the reported purpose of investigating scientifically the matter of explosions in mines, will discover no new explanation of explosions. It call, however, co-ordinate the previous investigations of similar boards in England and on the Continent; and it may do a vast amount of good by promulgating widely, and in a form comprehensible by the most unlettered miner, certain facts and obvious deductions that cannot but have an effect in reducing the number and extent of the mine-disasters which, in the last few years, have been so terrible in frequency and magnitude. The only possible sources of explosions of any magnitude in coal-mines are : (1) explosives stored in quantity in the mine; (2) gases generated or liberated in the mine; and (3) coal-dust. Combinations of any of the three may, of course, take part in the result. The danger of any great loss of life from stored explosives alone is very remote. The simplest ordinary precaution forbids the presence, in one place underground, of any considerable quantity of explosives, and it would require an

LAWRENCE ADDICKS, Douglas, Ariz.-I think papers of this character, while general in, nature, are of particular value and interest, because when we figure on competing with the East in electrometallurgical industries, on account of the cheap power on the Pacific Coast, we have to take two or three things into account. In the first place, power very rarely amounts to more than 20 per cent. of the total cost of an operation, even .though it be electrometallurgical, and I think it is the common opinion among those who are not familiar with those particular industries, that it amounts to more than 50 or 60 per cent. Take copper refining; we may say that it is 15 per cent. of the total cost. In the second place, around New York City, with 100 per cent. load factor and a reasonably large load, say 10,000 kw., we can generate from a certain class of coal 1 kw.-hr. for about 0.3c. I might say, however, that 0.3c. does not include overhead charges, interest on the investment, etc. The third factor we have to consider out here is that any product to be salable, must command a retail market. It would be useless to produce wire bars here on the Pacific Coast because there is no place to roll them. If we were going to establish a copper refinery, that part of its output which goes into wire bars would have to be taken care of by building a rolling mill alongside of it to turn it into wire and finally make a product that is salable. I do not think, however, that Mr. Lyon need have excluded copper refining from his industries. There are perhaps 50,000,000 lb. of copper a month refined in this country on a custom basis. I think the smelting companies would be very glad to build refineries here if conditions warranted it. The recent extensions of the Great Falls refinery and of the Tacoma refinery in the last few months give evidence of that.

DURING the last several years the authors have been conducting tests on a tensile machine that autographically records load-elongation data. In certain tests at elevated temperatures on face-centered cubic, hexagonal close-packed, and body-centered cubic materials (binary alloys of nickel, zirconium, and iron), the load-elongation curve as shown in Fig. 1 reaches a maximum load (Pmax,) at relatively small amounts of strain and a large amount of elongation occurs subsequently with a continuously decreasing load, until finally localized necking and fracture take place. This early maximum load behavior has been found without the accompanying evidence of localized necking as has been assumed by some, or of evidence of cracking as observed by others.' This behavior has also been observed by Nadai and Manjoinez whose results are in good agreement with ours. The prior strain, strain rate, test temperature, and crystal structure affect the observations. The influence of prior strain was observed in tests on unalloyed zirconium at 300°C in which specimens containing large amounts of prior strain (cold work) exhibited the type of curve shown in Fig. 1. No localized necking was observed after strain as much as that of point B. Annealed and recrystallized specimens of the same material showed a load-elongation curve with maximum load occurring after considerable strain hardening and at the beginning of localized necking. Interrupted tests (Fig. 2) show no loss in strength because of recovery or recrys-tallization during an interval at temperature without load. Recovery under stress such as found by Wood and Suiter3 in aluminum is now being investigated as one possible explanation. The strain rate is a contributing variable as shown in Fig. 3, a test on high purity nickel. Here the strain rate was decreased by a factor of ten during a test in which the maximum load was reached at a small strain. The slope of the true stress-true strain curve was positive with the more rapid strain rate and negative with the slower strain rate. In many binary ferrites an added effect of temperature has been observed. Fig. 4 shows the load-elongation plots for a binary ferritic alloy containing 2 pct Mo. The concentrator treats sulfide ore containing lead, copper, zinc, gold and silver, at the rate of 850 tons per 24 hr., and produces lead, copper, zinc and iron concentrates by selective flotation methods. The ore occurs below the oxidized zone along a main fracture, the wall rock of which is either greywacke or calcareous shale. The predominating sulfide minerals are galena, sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite; the others are quartz and calcite. In minor amounts, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and hematite occur, and such secondary minerals as smithsonite, chalcocite, covellite, bornite, cerussite and anglesite are detected in the ore, the last two named occurring principally as surface alterations of the galena. The ore is hauled from the mine bins in 10-ton cars which pass over the track scales before entering the car dumper ahead of the crusher plant.' A conveyor belt delivers the crushed ore to the sulfide bin, which has a capacity of 2800 tons. The primary grinding unit consists of two 6 by 12-ft. Marcy rod mills operating in parallel and in open circuit, each taking 425 tons per day. One rod mill discharges into an 8 by 25-ft. Dorr classifier with a 12-ft. bowl and the other into a 6 by 25-ft. Dorr duplex classifier. These classifiers are arranged so that each unit rakes the sands into a 6 by 14-ft. Traylor ball mill, which discharges to the bowl classifier only. The duplex classifier therefore operates in open circuit and the bowl classifier in closed circuit, the overflow of both classifiers furnishing the feed for the flotation section. Other groupings have been tried, but this has been found the most satisfactory. The Marcy mills are driven by 150-hp. slip-ring induction motors with speed reducers to give 17 r.p.m. The Traylor mill operates at a speed of 24 r.p.m. and is driven by a 200-hp. slip-ring induction motor, direct connected to pinion and gear. The bowl classifier operates at a speed of 22 r.p.m., with the bowl rake making 4.5 r.p.m. and the duplex classifier at 31 r.p.m. High-carbon steel rods of Mexican manufacture, 12 ft. long by 3-in. diameter, are used in the Marcy mills, with a resulting consumption of 1.52 Ib. per ton ore. A GREAT number of hypotheses has been advanced to explain the complex phenomena that are encountered in flotation. In the days of bulk-oil flotation, when a large quantity of oil was employed, it was observed that the oil-mineral aggregate floated above the ore-pulp because of its lesser density. With the advent of froth-flotation this phase of the theory had to be modified to take into-account the presence of air bubbles.. The reason why the mineral-bearing froth of today rises to the top of flotation cells is, of course, because the air-mineral aggregate, with whatever reagent may be associated with it, is lighter than the pulp. In an attempt to explain froth-flotation the fact has been emphasized that certain minerals are wetted and therefore remain in water; while others are not wetted and therefore become associated in preference with air. Such an "explanation" does not explain facts, it merely states them; for instance, it does not explain why minerals are wetted under some circumstances and not wetted under others. Going somewhat further, the wetting or nonwetting of minerals by water has been ascribed' to differences in the angles of contact between oil droplets and mineral surface at the surface of the minerals. This explanation, however, was abandoned when soluble flotation reagents came to replace the so-called "insoluble" reagents. Another theory, sponsored about 10 years ago by Ralston,2 involves the effects of electric charges at the surface of the mineral particles and air bubbles. This theory, unfortunately, was not developed as fully as it seems desirable. The belief that adsorption phenomena might play a preponderant role in flotation3 has been rather widespread for the last 10 years. Unfor-

As a raw material, prereduced pellets can be considered symptomatic of the quiet revolution taking place in the quality and grade of blast furnace burdens for the past decade. In 1954, the average analysis of ores from U.S. ranges in the Great Lakes area was 50.86% Fe (natural), 10.22% SiO2, and 10.90% moisture; ten years later, the average was 56.67% Fe (natural), 8.13% SiO2, and 6.17% moisture. The advance in Canada was even more pronounced in a lesser number of years. In 1957 the average product of Canadian ore-producing areas was 51.62% Fe (natural), 8.59% Si02, and 8.02% moisture; in 1964, the average grade was 59.59% Fe (natural), 6.27% SiO2, and 3.94% moisture.2 These dramatic data are testimony to the giant strides made in iron ore improvement, and the next logical step is prereduction. Prereduction can well be considered as a beneficiation step in which oxygen is the gangue. Since the ultimate objective of milling and smelting is iron metal, non-metallic constitutents in general, whether oxygen or silica, are contaminants. The past and continuing attack aimed at lowering the silica content of concentrates is succeeding. One need only thumb through the Grade Name listings of the American Iron Ore AssociationVo note that virtually all commercial pellets contain less than 8% silica, many are lower than 6%, and a few below 45%. With natural technical evolution, it is expected "many" rather than "few" will ultimately be in the last category and further mechanical concentration will have reached the point of diminishing returns. At this level, oxygen would constitute the only major diluent worthy of attack.

This paper outlines a series of tests carried out during the first six months of 1927, in the laboratory and mill of the Moctezuma Copper Co. The object of the tests was to determine whether the soluble salts present in the mill circuit water were having a detrimental cffect on the recovery made by flotation. To accomplish this object a series of water analyses were made, followed by flotation experiments in which definite quantities of the salts found were added as addition agents. Before proceeding to describe the results obtained in the course of the investigation, reference will be made to five articles that have appeared during the last two years in which the action of such salts is discussed. Two of these are by A. T. Tye1, 2 and describe flotation practice at Cananea and the way in which water high in ferrous and ferric salts is conditioned for differential flotation. Two, one by A. C. Munro and H. A. Pearse3 and the other by H. A. Pearse,4 outline Britannia milling methods, and the advantages that have been derived from ore washing; while in the fifth, A. W. Hahn5 summarizes the results of laboratory experiments in which ferrous, ferric and aluminum sulfates have been added in varying amounts. The mill of the Moctezuma Copper Co. has a daily capacity of 3000 tons, and is situated about 75 miles south of Douglas, Arizona, on the Rio de Nacozari, in the Mexican state of Sonora. The ore treated is mined from the company's mine at Pilares, about 5 miles southeast of the Concentrator. This ore contains about 2.5 per cent. copper— present almost entirely as chalcopyrite—and 10 per cent. iron, of which

The outstanding features of 1926 in the petroleum industry included the following: 1. Stocks of all oils (crude and refined) were reduced, making the first annual decline since 1918. 2. Domestic crude oil production increased steadily during the last 11 months of the year, accelerating during the fourth quarter, and ending the year at the highest level ever attained. 3. Three new major oil fields were developed—Panhandle, Spindle-top and Seminole. 4. Important advances were registered in production technique, tending to retard the declines of old wells and to maintain the flush periods of new wells. 5. The problem of gaining greater economic control of production through unit operations and gas conservation received growing recognition by the industry and the Federal Oil Conservation Board. 6. The rate of drilling was sharply increased during the second quarter of the year and suffered only a very slight retardation during the closing months. 7. The runs of crude oil to stills were maintained above normal throughout the year and underwent acceleration during the fourth quarter. 8. The gasoline situation was marked by a continuous and substantial increase in the rate of production of cracked gasoline, and by an improvement in the statistical position of the commodity. 9. Prices of both crude petroleum and its principal derivatives were characterized by more profitable levels and greater stability than for a number of years past; and, while showing declines during the fourth quarter, prices did not recede sufficiently to slow down materially either drilling or refinery operations. The study of the energy used in crushing operations has advanced from a period of perplexing confusion to one of greater clarity. Only within the last few years has any true conception of the work in crushing been possible, owing to the chaotic state of theoretical knowledge. For some 20 years a controversy existed between those advocating the Rittinger law and those advocating the Kick law. The Kick law now appears to be definitely out of the picture, and crushing efficiency may be based confidently on the Rittinger theory. There also seems to be a generally crystallized conception as to the meaning and nature of sub-sieve material. There is needed a simple, direct method for determining surface on a crushed ore product, and also a simple and accepted method for size determination on minus 400-mesh material. The Crushing Law The Rittinger(l)‡ theory of crushing was advanced in 1867 and the Kick(3) theory in 1885. While the Rittinger theory might have been accepted without much question and actually had been accepted by many investigators, a serious doubt as to its validity was raised by Stadler(10) who upon purely theoretical grounds proclaimed the Kick "law" as the true law of crushing. According to Rittinger the energy required in successive steps in reduction increases geometrically, while according to Kick the energy increases arithmetically. These "laws" therefore are at variance, and the establishment of the true law was recognized as of first importance. Many simple experiments have been made to demonstrate the application of the Rittinger theory to crushing, and it would seem that its simplicity should favor its acceptance. Experimental evidence, however, was not convincing, as no reliable data could be obtained on the finer material from a crushing or grinding operation. Gates,(13) Bell,(19)

Homestake's mining methods today are controlled to a con¬siderable extent by that which has been done in the past. The two main operating shafts were begun m 1878 and 1896 respectively, so that the location of shafts, loca¬tions of all the drifts on the upper levels, and a great deal of stoping was done before any of those now connected with the mine had anything to do with it In this paper is described the general plan of development. A table shows percentage of total production mined by the different methods in recent years. Average daily produc¬tion for several years now has been about 3850 tons milled. The Tom Reed Extension and Big Jim mines of United Eastern Mining Co. are situated in the Oatman district, Mohave County, Ariz., about 28 miles southwest of Kingman, the nearest railway point. Articles descriptive of the mine surface plant, mill construction, and plant operations have been written by Otto Wartenweiler,' the designing engineer; Wheeler 0. North12 when he was assistant general manager for the company, and Earle M. Bagley, mill superintendent.3 The last article covers average costs for the full time the mill was operated. The geology of the mines is described by F. L. Ransome 4 of the United States Geological Survey. Production was started in January, 1917, and the known orebodies were exhausted in May, 1925, showing a life of seven years and five months. On account of the comparatively short life and the fact that stoping operations were confined to two orebodies, little experimenting was done with mining methods. The two orebodies were in what is generally called the Tom Reed-United Eastern vein, which occupies a fault fissure having a normal displacement of several hundred feet. Seven or eight very productive ore shoots were mined along this vein in a distance of 1 1/2 miles, the two worked by the United Eastern being 1 mile apart. The maximum dimensions of the Tom Reed Extension ore shoot were: height, 750 ft.; length, 950 ft.; thickness, 48 ft. The vein structure varied from a solid quartz-calcite filling to a series of parallel stringers separated by andesite. From this body, 511,976 tons of ore were mined. (Fig. 1.) The maximum dimensions of the Big Jim orebody were: height, 450 ft.; length, 850 ft., thickness, 35 ft. Its structure was similar to that of the Tom Reed Extension but larger sections of the vein were made up

It is well known, in metallurgical circles, though less recognized in the technical press, that there have been remarkable increases in the capacity of the blast furnace in the last five .years. In places this capacity has been almost doubled. This paper will brief the experimental work carried on during more than five years with the direct assistance of the technical staffs of three lead smelters treating three distinctive types of feed. The first is the custom smelter of the International Smelting and Refining Co. at Tooele, Utah1, with a multiplicity of ores; the second, the Kellogg, Idaho, smelter of the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating CO.2, treating an exceedingly rich lead charge, such as is now being made more and more as the practice of concentration is improved; and the third, the smelter at Trail, B. C., owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited3, which treats highly zinciferous charges and later recovers zinc from the slag. In comparing operations at these three smelters it must be clearly recognized that the objectives in smelting differ through differences in economics. Many operations are not, then, strictly comparable. There have also been decided improvements in operation since all of the smelters were examined, though this was but a relatively short time ago. The general factors that govern speed in smelting and the loss of metals in the smelters examined will be stressed. (For details of operation the reader is referred to the original papers.) This paper will then be an examination of the fundamentals of operating units in a search for improvements, and not a description of three great lead smelters. During the fall of the year 1873, attention was redirected to the occurrence of lead ores in Southwestern Arkansas (chiefly in Sevier County), and somewhat extensive explorations of the deposits have since been made in the hope of finding the ores sufficiently argentiferous to be profitably worked. How far the expectations have been realized I am not authentically advised, but samples of the galena ore, yielding 62.09 per cent. of lead, gave on assay at the rate of 15 3-10 ounces of silver to the ton of ore. This was the highest result obtained by myself, though I am informed that higher yields have been obtained by others. Among the samples of ores from this locality, forwarded to me in January last, was one specimen which I at once recognized as stibnite, and, on notification, other specimens of the same from Sevier County were forwarded me. The first specimen of the several received contained 11.51 per cent. of gangue, 57.62 per cent. antimony, 4.57 of bismuth, with small amounts of arsenic and iron. The latest result from a portion of another hand specimen I append in full, with duplicate estimations of the arsenic, bismuth, and gangue. The analyses were all conducted by Mr. C. R. Winters, under my direction, and in the case of those given below the ore mas separated as closely as possible from the gangue before analysis. The results are for the mineral freed from hygroscopic moisture, and are as follows: I. 11. Mean. Two comprehensive papers have appeared regarding the forms of copper that occur in smelter slags, one by Frank E. Lathe1 and the other by C. G. Maier and G. D. Van Arsdale.2 These authors comment on other published results and draw conclusions from their own investigations. The development of X-ray examination of minerals and improvement in high-power microscopic methods make it possible today to get additional evidence by means that were not available to earlier investigators. The present work was confined to reverberatory slags obtained from five different plants. Some definite conclusions were reached regarding the forms of copper present in these slags. In most cases these agree with some of the findings of Maier and Van Arsdale but new methods of attack were used in the investigation. Conclusions of Previous Investigators Various important conclusions reached by previous investigators are summarized in the following paragraphs, arranged chronologically. William A. Heywood:3 Slag losses increase with grade of matte but with the same grade of matte losses decrease as the acidity of the slag increases. Lewis T. Wright:' Slag losses are only partly due to prills of matte. It is suggested that part of the copper is dissolved in the slag. J. Parke Channing9 A considerable part of the copper enters the slag as silicate or oxide and not as sulfide. C. A. Grabill:6 Slag losses are both physical and chemical. Physical losses, due to poor settling, gas flotation and slight differences in specific gravity, are small under normal conditions. Chemical losses may- be due to formation of oxides or to solution of metals and sulfides. The last is considered the most important. John W. James:' The copper in converter slag is largely the oxide and as such enters the reverberatory slag when converter slag is added to the charge.

The following list includes only a fraction of the pamphlets that have been published by the Institute. Any other paper published by the Institute may be obtained for the price of $1, except those published in Volume XXXI, which are rare. The Institute is still selling back volumes of Transactions at reduced prices, but some of these volumes are becoming rare and members who desire to complete their sets of these very important books on mining and metallurgy are advised to send in their orders as soon as convenient. The attention of members is also called to the bibliographical index of the science of ore deposits contained in the Emmons Volume which is selling at $3 in paper and $4 in half morocco. The Posepny Volume is already exhausted and members who do not get in their orders for the Emmons Volume at the present reduced price may soon find themselves unable to obtain it on such favorable terms.

Conditions necessary for plane front growth of two-piwse solids from a single-phase melt are discussed. Alloys consideved are those from a simple binary system containing a eutectic, but are not, in general, of eutectic cornposition. It is concluded that: 1) plane front solzdification is favored by low growth rate, steep thermal gradient, and essential absence of convection; and 2) for steady-state solidification, the structure should resemble that of directionally solidified eutectics (lamellar, rodlike). Factors affecting THERE are many materials, including metals, available today with strengths in excess of 10' psi when in whisker or fiber form. The challenge facing those interested in practical application of such materials has been, and remains, the economic production and incorporation of the whiskers or fibers into useful engineering composites. solute redistribution along the growth direction are described quantitatively, by numerical solution of the diffusion equation. Effects of variations in growtlz rate on average composition of the solidifying composite are significant. For alloys not too close to a single-phase region, the initial transient at constant gvowth velocity is the order of D/R where D is diffusion coefficient in the liquid and R is interface velocity. Composites consisting of the reinforcing phase within a metallic matrix have excited particular interest in recent years because of their potential for high strength at elevated temperature and for resistance to brittle fracture. Techniques employed to incorporate the whiskers or fibers in the metallic phase have included 1) liquid metal infiltration, 2) solid or liquid phase sintering, and 3) direct growth of composites from the melt, of rodlike or lamellar morphology, by directional solidification of eutectic alloys. On April 1, 1937, Burma, formerly a province of the Indian Empire, was formally separated from India and became an independent unit of the British Commonwealth. In future, therefore, statistics of oil production in India will exclude Burma and those for Burma will be separately published. The last few years have been marked by noteworthy, almost spectacular, developments in the oil fields of Burma and the Punjab. In Burma these developments have been the proving of unexpected extensions of the existing fields and not the discovery of entirely new fields. The new extensions are important not only to Burma in giving a new lease of life to her fields, but also in general as stressing some interesting geological aspects hitherto neglected. Production The production of crude oil in Imperial gallons has been: Burma India 1934 254,760,070 67,265,210 1935 251,338,974 . 71,323,362 1936 265,656,393 69,241,504 1937 (eat.) 270,000,000 70,000,000 The Chindwin Fields.—The small field at Indaw continues to produce steadily about 3,000,000 gal. a year, but no really deep test has yet been successfully carried out and resources are thus not yet fully known. The remote location of the field, inaccessible except by river and situated 22 miles from the Chindwin 270 miles up that river from its junction with the Irrawaddy, has not encouraged active exploitation. The field is worked exclusively by the Indo-Burma Petroleum Co., Ltd. (I.B.P.), using now an automatic gas-lift system, and the company formerly refined the oil at a small refinery at Pantha on the river near by. The chief market was for kerosene in upper Burma. The refinery has now been closed. The oil is stored on the field during the low-water season
