The development reported in this paper was begun by the author a number of years ago, while he was a lecturer on complex chemistry and metallurgy at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and in charge of that institution's research laboratory. Completion of the development and reduction to practice did not occur until last year at the Westport mill, laboratories and testing plant of the Dorr Company, where this method is now in general use for identifying and localizing the mineral constituents of both metallic and nonmetallic ores. It has proved to be a practical tool of the metallurgical staff at the Westport mill, devising unusual milling flowsheets for complex and refractory ore bodies. In a number of instances the findings have been successfully used as fundamental factors in the design and specification of complete metallurgical plants. Seven examples of the use of this method in solving practical milling problems are included in this paper. General Outline The microscopic study of an ore, at first only of scientific interest, has proved extremely useful both in practical geology and in ore dressing. The binocular magnifying lenses for rough observation of the products of an ore-dressing plant have been in use for a long time; but only within the last few years has a systematic microscopical examination of ore samples become a normal tool of any research laboratory dealing with ore-dressing problems. Such an investigation avoids considerable loss of time as well as empirical trials and useless experimentation. It will generally indicate the correct grinding and often will suggest the proper method of treatment. . The petrographic determination of transparent minerals in thin sections, or even in grains, has been perfected, and very accurate methods have been devised to meet any requirement, such as Feodorof's rotating stage on the petrographic microscope. Almost all transparent minerals can be positively identified by their optical properties; i.e., isotropism, anisotropism, color, pleochroism, refractory index, cleavage, crystal form, birefringence, and others. The identification of opaque minerals is a much more difficult problem and can be done only by using polished specimens. Unfortunately, most of the valuable metallic ores, and even some of the nonmetallic ones, are not transparent; therefore it has been necessary to develop a special technique for the determination of these minerals. Some optical properties—for instance, isotropism, anisotropism, color, cleavage, reflecting power-—are often adequate in roughly classifying the mineral. Only "reflecting power" is a measurable value, provided special photometric equipment (ocular photometer or Orcel's photoelectric cell) is available. Sutherland used an ion-pair adsorption model to derive the author's hy-drolytic pee-acid) adsorption equation for the contact bubble curves of Wark and Cox. To do so it was necessary to postulate that the sum of coverages of surface anion sites by the collector and depressant anions is practically unity. It is here shown that the free energy of Sutherland's postulated collector ion (x-)-depressant ion (OH-) exchange reaction (for no other than the OH- to compete with X-), namely EX + (OH-) Z SOH- + X-, is in some cases positive and X- should not even adsorb. Also, in many cases the (OH-) adsorption must be quite negligible even though the collector covers only about a sixth of the mineral surface at the threshold of air bubble contact. This, however, contradicts the postulate that permits one to derive the correct bubble contact eqwztion for the ion-pair model. Furthermore, the requirement for charge neutrality leads in the ion-pair model to the (impossible) constancy of the ratio @+)/(OH-) along a contact bubble curve in which pH may change by more than seven units. HYDROLYTIC ADSORPTION EQUATION Hydrolytic (free-acid or free-base) and ion-pair (H', X-, or R', OH-) adsorption models of the collector in metal sulfide and similar flotation systems are superficially alike and somewhat difficult to differentiate. This is because they yield, under seemingly valid assumptions, equivalent forms of the equations describing the distribution of the collector between the aqueous solution and the mineral surface. This has been discussed by the author and associates1-4 and more recently by Sutherland,' both for simple collector-mineral and for more complicated collector-depressant-mineral systems. In the hydrolytic adsorption model the equations describing the contact bubble curves of Wark and coxeJ7 are as follows :2 Here X is the collector anion, D- the depressant anion, 9, and On are the fractions of the free-acid sites S on the surface of the mineral covered by collector and depressant free acids, respectively, and @ is the fraction of uncovered sites. Kx is the free-acid collector dissociation equilibrium con- stant, K1 that for the free-acid collector adsorption, KD that for the free-acid depressant dissociation, and K2 the equilibrium constant for the free-acid depressant adsorption. Eqs. 1 to 5 yield upon simultaneous solution the result is the critical free-acid concentration for bubble contact in the absence of depressant-free acid. Eq. 8 expresses the conditions along a simple collector-mineral contact bubble curve for the case HD = 0, or V = 0. Last and Cook showed that Eq. 6 applies generally and with good accuracy in the collector-depressant-metal sulfide mineral systems. Inci-dentally, it has been shown by infrared absorption studies that in some cases the free-acid adsorption process splits out water.' In this case, Eq. 2 might be written SHOH + HX Z SHX + H20, with a similar equation replacing Eq. 4 for depressant-free acid-water exchange. This possibility does not change, however, the basic equations or considerations of the hydrolytic adsorption model. Indeed, this type of free acid-water exchange reaction was predicted for fluorite and iron ore flotation by oleic acid in the dry grinding and boiling processes.410

Feldspathic deposits occur widely throughout the United States, but North Carolina, California, Connecticut, and South Carolina accounted for over 80% of the total domestic feldspar output for the year 1973.1 Pegmatites and granites constitute the major feldspar reserves of the United States, 2 and in addition, feldspar is produced as a byproduct by firms whose major products are spodumene and mica. 3 Feldspar flotation is practiced in the United States, Mexico, Finland, Norway, West Germany, Japan, and the USSR. According to the US Bureau of Mines estimates, the production of feldspar in the United States and rest of the world were 704,000 and 2,514,000 t, respectively. Feldspar is principally used as a flux in making glass, pottery, porcelain, enamel, tile, and other ceramic products. In recent years, the domestic feldspar industry is faced with a number of problems. As a result of increased cost of energy and the introduction in 1972 of new legislative programs relating to air, water, and noise pollution, land-use restrictions, and mined-land rehabilitation, the production costs have increased. Apart from the increased cost of operation, an operational problem exists with the feldspar producers in North Carolina, especially those in the Spruce Pine area. This problem is concerned with the use of hydrofluoric acid in the feldspar flotation. Feldspar producers in Spruce Pine, NC, have been discharging process waste water into the North Toe River. The mill waste water contains active fluoride ions. Fluoride in excessive concentrations is undesirable in waters used for drinking. It is stated that water containing 0.9-1.0 ppm fluoride will seldom cause mottled enamel on children's teeth; and for adults, concentrations less than 3-4 are not likely to cause endemic cumulative fluorosis and skeletal effect. Although the literature on this subject is rather confusing and inconclusive, the inference that concentrations over 4 ppm may affect bone structure is clear. According to the recent Federal Register,4 maximum fluoride level of 1.4 ppm at 79°-98°F is considered to be adequate and safe for the protection of health of the consumers. The EPA and state environmental agencies have accelerated their drive to reduce water pollution on a faster schedule. By 1977, the EPA specifications for maximum contaminant level of fluoride ions in the discharge waters of feldspar milling operatins is expected to be reduced to 2.0 ppm. The other problems of using hydrofluoric acid are the following: toxicity, hazards of handling and storage, and high cost as compared to other inorganic acids (almost 16 times the cost of sulfuric acid). In order to reduce fluoride levels in mill discharge waters, mining companies have taken the following steps: I) Recirculating a part of their mill water. Even though recirculation of mill water seems to be a novel method of reducing fluoride contamination of the discharge water, there are certain operational and handling problems. 2) Conducting research on the treatment of fluorides in mill waste water. The technology of treatment of fluoride ions has received considerable interest in the recent years. A recent research report5 estimates that the cost of fluoride ion removal to meet the present specifications in the feldspar industry is approximately $0.25/t of ore processed, and about $0.50/t of feldspar produced. At the request of the feldspar producing industries in North Carolina, the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Minerals Research Laboratory has taken up a research program directed towards overcoming the fluoride ion pollution problem. After a close study of the operational, technical, and economic aspects of feldspar flotation, it was decided to attempt to replace the conventional hydrofluoric acid process. Conventional Feldspar Flotatin Using Hydrofluoric Acid Since the inception of the feldspar flotation process using hydrofluoric acid by O'Meara2,6 the process has achieved a great commercial success. In the conventional flotation separation of feldspar-quartz, hydrofluoric acid is used to suppress quartz and activate feldspar, and a long chain amine salt (acetate or chloride) is used as a collector. The bulk of amine collectors used in current feldspar operations are applied as the water-soluble acetates of the free-base amines. These products are pastes or waxy solids which are available in a range of acetic acid neutralization levels generally 50 to 100% neutralized. In spite of the problems mentioned in connection with the use of hydrofluoric acid, this process is extremely stable with respect to changes in the process variables. With the exception of a few operations, alaskite and pegmatite are the major sources of feldspar.7 In the flotation treatment of a pegmatite that contains iron-bearing minerals (heavy minerals), mica, feldspar, and silica, a logical order of removal presents itself considering the following:8 1) Mica is readily floated by an amine collector in a pulp pH 3.5. Some iron-bearing minerals will usually respond to amine collector in acid circuit with the mica concentrate. 2) Since iron minerals tend to occur invariably in the feldspar concentrate, it is desirable to remove most of these prior to feldspar flotation. A fatty acid or a petroleum sulfonate collector used in this flotation step in acid circuit will float iron-bearing minerals. 3) Using hydrofluoric acid to maintain pH of 2.5, an amine collector employed in a final step will float feldspar away from silica, usually leaving the latter in the tailing as a high-grade silica concentrate. The problems connected with the flotation separation of feldspar-quartz arise due to the similarities in their chemical structure. Therefore, any reagent system that is likely to succeed in feldspar-quartz separation should have adsorption affinity towards one of the minerals and depression effect towards the other mineral.

BALL wear in wet grinding mills has been the subject of considerable discussion in the last few years. Its importance to millmen is obvious in view of the fact that ball wear may cost from 2 to 4¢ per ton of ore for the more fortunate operators and many times this cost when a refractory ore must be reduced to a fine state of comminution. Consequently, any factual information that may be obtained on the nature of ball wear may be applied to introduce changes leading to lower ball consumption and therefore also to lower costs. In 1940, while employed with the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co., Britannia Beach, B.C., I had occasion to investigate factors that might affect ball consumption. We performed a number of tests, which will be briefly described. These tests originated as a result of changing from a 3 1/2-in. ball to a 2-in. ball of different type of manufacture and were motivated by the desire to obtain the best possible type of 2-in. ball. Our testing was helped by the fact that the company operated a one-ton electric furnace, so that it was quite easy to make steel changes. It should be emphasized at the beginning that these tests produced results that in their general application to milling should be interpreted qualitatively rather than quantitatively. As will be evident in the description of the method used in testing, the balls were subjected to an intermittent batch grinding treatment, which may have produced results in rate of steel wear that may not have an accurate correlation with steel consumption in full-scale mill operation. However, with this fixed and rather arbitrary method of testing, results were obtained that may be of some interest and may stimulate further work on this subject. Unfortunately, owing to pressure of war work, our tests, which we had intended to repeat on a continuous grinding operation, had to be discontinued. METHOD OF TESTING Tests were made in a small cylindrical mill, rotating at 72 r.p.m. Internal dimensions of the mill were 10 1/2-in. dia. by 9 in. The cylindrical inner surface was lined with rubber and the two ends were formed by steel plates. A charge of 2000 grams dry feed and 2000 c.c. of water was added every 2 hr., the mill being drained of pulp before the addition of each charge, by tilting and sluicing with water. The mill was run on afternoon and night shift for daily periods of about 15 hr. total grinding time, and each test lasted from 60 to 150 hr. This batch method of testing involved a higher average pulp temperature in the mill, which undoubtedly affected comparative results in some of the tests. HARDNESS OF BALL VS. WEAR In these tests, special "eutectoid" steel balls were used, some of which were chill-cast and quenched, some sand-cast and quenched, and some sand-cast and annealed to a dead soft condition. A technique was developed to calculate the density of liquid metals from the profile of a weighed levitated drop obtained by emitted light photography and calibration. The density of liquid copper was determined over the temperature range 1370" to 2100°K and expressed with the equation: The molar volumes and thermal coefficients of expansion are calculated. Copper, upon melting, was found to expand 3.34 pct. A knowledge of the density of liquid metals is essential as it is a parameter appearing in most theories of the liquid state. The liquid density is also necessary for the calculation of the commercially important contraction occurring on solidification. Unfortunately good density values are rarely available and the present work was undertaken to establish a new method of density determination free from the limitations of the existing methods. For liquid metals with high melting points, the variation and the limited number of density values reported in the literature have been caused primarily by difficulties in technique, a matter which has been adequately discussed by Urbain.' In all the methods used for measuring the density of the high-melting liquid metals there are sources of error, and corrections have to be made. For example, in the method of balanced columns, the formation of gas bubbles in one or both arms was a great source of error. In the pyknometer3 and immersed-sinker methods, corrections of certain volumes for thermal expansion to the operating temperature exceed 4 pct. In the maximum-bubble method5 a correction for the thermal expansion of the bubble-tube is used (about 1.6 pct); a second correction takes into account the change in the volume of liquid displaced by the bubble-tube (about 3.5 pct). Another method used is based on the shape of a drop of liquid, at rest on an inert refractory plaque, obtained photographically or radiographi-cally. The volume is calculated from the shape, which is sensitive to the surface tension and supporting material, by some intricate empirical relation. The drop contour changes with 90 deg rotation of the support.7 The application of all methods is limited by reaction between liquid metal and the apparatus. The successful stabilization of a mass of liquid metal during levitation melting8 afforded a technique for measuring the density of liquid metals out of contact with solid materials. The technique was developed by using copper as the density of liquid copper has already been studied extensively, thus allowing comparison with the new method. It consists of calculating the volume from the dimensioned profile of the levitated drop obtained by emitted-light photography and careful calibration. The molten egg-shaped drop spins around the magnetic axis of the coil (lined vertically) at a speed which seems to increase with increasing temperature. The method does not involve corrections and the experimental setup allows the use of vacuum or special atmospheres. The maximum operating temperature is limited by excessive evaporation of metal from the droplet. EXPERIMENTAL Levitating System. A stabilizing ring was used in conjunction with a 3-turn levitating coil energized by a 450-kc per sec, 10-kw Toccotron with a high current-low voltage output stabilized to f 1 pet.' APyrex glass tube with a Pyrex Optical flat window inserted through the coil and ring allowed the use of special atmospheres during levitation melting, as shown in Fig. 1. Optical System. Fig. 1 shows the optical arrangement used to photograph the profiles of the drop, parallel and perpendicular to the vertical spinning axis, simultaneously on the same frame of a high-speed 35-mm film. The optical system was adjusted to avoid any distortion of the profiles and to ensure that both profiles are in focus. The length of path from object to objective was about 30 cm, and a magnification factor close to 1 was obtained with the single-lens reflex-camera system. Temperature Measurement and Control. In operation, the specimen temperature was constant to 5 C for a fixed power input to the levitating coil and fixed rate of gas flow through the tube. The Hayden mill of the Ray Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corporation, is now equipped with two 9 by 12-ft. rod mills having a daily capacity of 6000 tons of coarse-crushing plant product from the mine. These two mills crush a ¾-in. product to approximately 19 per cent on 14 mesh, with only one pass through the mills. Each rod mill has taken the place of four sets of 42-in. Garfield rolls with their attendant screens, and is making a product for the fine-grinding department comparable to that formerly made by rolls in closed circuit with screens. The rod mills are lined with wave-type liners of white iron, varying in thickness from 2 to 3 in. The shell and end liners last approximately 600 to 700 days. Manganese-steel lifter bars, 3? in. thick, are used, spaced about 11 in. apart, and they give a life of 350 to 450 days. Fig. 1 shows the general design and thickness of the wave-type liners and lifter bars; 1½-in. liner bolts are used to fasten the lifter bars to the shell. The shell liners are held in place by the tapered lifter bars. A ¾-in. wood backing is used between the shell and the liners. The rod-mill scoop has removable manganese-steel lips, which last 250 to 300 days. The scoop proper has shown some wear in spots, and these spots have been protected by rubber bolted over them. Water and milk of lime are added to the elevator feeding the mill, but not enough water to cause a pounding of the rods against the shell. Roughly, the water added amounts to 25 to 33 per cent of the ore. Additional water is added to the mill discharge to facilitate distribution to the classifier bowls in the fine-grinding department. Rods are charged to the mill once every four days, the mill being down about 20 min. for this purpose. Other delays are negligible, and usually are due to a loose liner bolt or possibly power trouble. However, these occasions are extremely rare. In charging the mill, a crane is used

In discussing the petroleum products situation the first thing that comes to mind is "what is happening to gasoline." Is the consumption increasing? How is the export market? What about imports? Are stocks on hand too high? Have we produced too much? This paper will attempt to answer these questions. Consumption of gasoline (motor fuel) in the United States in spite of the depression and the chaotic conditions of many industries has increased during 1931 about 2 per cent over 1930. This favorable factor was offset by a severe contraction in exports, which fell off about 30 per cent from 1930. This drop in exports was so large that very little more export business was done than in 1926 or 1927. Taking all demand combined, there was a decrease from the peak year of 1930 of nearly 11,000,000 bbl., amounting to slightly over 2 per cent. The units of the industry, though, should have expected some decrease and governed themselves accordingly. Let us see what they did. They reduced imports over 3,000,000 bbl., which helped. Production was cut 3,000,000 bbl., but this was not enough, so that stocks increased 1,800,000 bbl. whereas during the previous year stocks were reduced 2,500,000 bbl. It is apparent, therefore, that something was done to keep the industry in balance in regard to gasoline, but not enough. If the year had ended on Sept. 30, we could have said that production had been cut 19,000,000 bbl. and stocks had been reduced from the previous year, but the excessive production during the last three months of the year changed everything. It is a strange thing and worthy of note that the price of gasoline fell to its lowest levels when apparently the greatest improvement was being made, and that during the last quarter of the year prices started to improve, when, in spite of an improvement in total demand which approximated 1930, an excessive production caused an uneconomic condition to set in. Stocks on hand on Dec. 31 were unquestionably too high, possibly 10,000,000 bbl. more than was needed for a strong condition to obtain. A SUMMARY of the consumption of coal in 1945 shows that the coke industry accounted for 17 pct of the total coal used. No substitute for coke and the blast furnace in the reduction of iron ore has gained sufficient prominence so far to be given serious consideration. However, while the same slot-type ovens are being built and used now as were in use a few years ago, the problem of obtaining suitable coking coals, both high- and low-volatile, has forced many operators to revamp coal-blending facilities. Until the beginning of World War II, high-temperature coke plants were able to secure the required high-volatile and low-volatile coals from two or three seams and from three or four mines. Thus, many of our coke oven plants were able to operate with storage bins for two coals only. The variance in raw materials was not great, and uniformity of blend was a relatively simple problem. Since the beginning of World War II, many and important changes have taken place. Demand for all coals increased greatly. Production, though kept as near maximum capacity as possible, could not meet the demands for coal generally, and particularly for the various kinds of coal which have proved to be satisfactory for specialized uses; coals were allocated as nearly as possible in the order of greatest need; storage piling was reduced to the minimum necessary to keep plants in operation; uniformity of quality could not be maintained, and with this last, uniformity of composition of blends for coking could not be maintained. Whereas before the war producers of metallurgical coke could fill their needs from three or four mines, by the end of the war it was not unusual to find shipments to a single coke oven plant coming from as many as 30 different mines, in a single month. Since many of the mines producing both high- and low-volatile coal for high-grade metallurgical coke are rapidly nearing depletion, the problem of seeking new sources and of blending a number of coals in each plant for the production of high-temperature coke is facing practically every producer in the United States at the present time, and is one which will probably continue for many years to come. Midwestern by-product coke ovens in the Chicago and St. Louis areas use annually from 12 to 15 million tons of bituminous coals which are transported 500 to 700 miles from the Appalachian coal fields of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and eastern Kentucky. Approximately two-thirds of this coal is high-volatile bituminous. The critical transportation problem confronting the nation in 1943, and the growing scarcity of the best Appalachian coking coals, prompted the Illinois Geological Survey to propose a research program in which would be studied the coking properties of blends of low-sulphur, high-volatile Illinois coal with the high- and low-volatile coals from the eastern fields. Current problems in the cement industry are discussed and suggestions for solving them by modernization are made. Cement facility modernization is discussed in considerable detail with examples illustrating before and after conditions. Itemized are the improvements realized in better working conditions, better efficiency, higher production, lower costs, and better community relations. These improvements are related to the overall profitability of the particular plant or facility.

THE H. C. Frick Coke Co. has used belt conveyers for handling coal for the last eighteen years but, until recently, only for small tonnage and over short distances. The first installations were outside the mines for distributing coal to various parts of plants. A belt conveyer was put in service at Colonial No. 4 Mine in November, 1906, to carry coal from the main hoisting shaft to a storage bin serving two blocks of beehive ovens on the other side of the valley; it was in constant service until the Colonial No. 4 ovens were abandoned less than a year ago. This conveyor was in an overhead gallery that spanned our sidings and yard tracks and the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was a crude installation, from the viewpoint of present conveyor engineering practice. It had no mechanical feeding device, the coal simply ran through a gate in the side of a bin on to the belt; but one belt on this conveyor lasted eleven years. This conveyor is about 300 ft. long center, to center of pulleys. It operated at a speed of 250 ft. per min. and carried about 400 tons per day. On this basis, the belt life of eleven years means that not over a million and a quarter tons were carried by the belt. While this is not a large tonnage, the cost per ton was much less than by any previous method in use for supplying coal to ovens located at a distance from the main shaft. The next belt conveyor was installed at Bridgeport Mine in 1907. It carried about the same daily tonnage as the first, delivering from the hoisting shaft to a coke-oven bin. Very few data were kept on this conveyor. It also operated until the coke ovens at the plant were put out of blast and the coal taken to the Clairton byproduct plant by river. In 1916, work was started to equip the Bridgeport, Palmer, Gates, and Ronco mines to load their entire output on, the river for transportation to the Clairton byproduct plant, which was then being built. These mines were all operating at that time and had a large area of coal available for river shipment. The Monongahela Railroad was located between the hoisting shaft and the river at each of these plants and,, therefore, had to be crossed at each location to deliver coal to the river.

INTRODUCTION In the second quarter of 1979, Rapid Mining Co., Inc. ("Rapid") inquired whether Crocker National Bank ("CNB") would provide $4 million in term loan financing to help ("Dry Creek") acquire the outstanding shares of the Dry Creek Coal Company ("Dry Creek") in West Virginia. Prior to approaching CNB, Rapid had sought financing with the assistance of a financial advisor from a number of commercial banks without success. A summary of the initial terms requested by Rapid is shown in Table 1 compared with the actual terms on which the transaction closed. It is not difficult to note that the two sets of terms differ significantly. This is often the case when financing requests based on the expectations and vision of a mine developer are juxtaposed with more pragmatic requirements of a commercial bank. The "art" and fund of structuring financing plans for mining ventures (highly leveraged acquisitions or grass roots) comes in working with mine developers to arrive at a final financial structure that meets their objectives and constraints as well as those of the bank or other financial institutions providing much of the financing. Beginning with the terms requested by Rapid and ending with the terms that closed the transaction, this article briefly describes the process we went through with Rapid Mining. The Seller and Buyer The Dry Creek Coal Company was established in 1961, after its owner acquired the coal leases from Republic Steel. Republic has mined the primary coal seam from 1948-1961. Dry Creek was owned as a subchapter S corporation (i.e., for federal income tax purposes, income is taxed at the shareholder level) and had been run on a low key basis. Since the company had virtually no debt and limited cash needs, the owner produced primarily when rail cars were available and income was required. Output was therefore erratic as is shown in the top of Table II, but the result was a profitable little company with an attractive free cash position. Because the owner wished to retire and enjoy his wealth in a more readily spendable form, he had put the mine, with stated recoverable reserves of approximately 13 million tons, up for sale. In contrast, Rapid Coal's investors consisted of a number of investors of disparate financial situations. They had agreed upon a primary objective of income maximization and planned an annual production rate of 120,000 TPA which they and the current owner believed realizable. The Formulation of a Financing Structure Figure 1 presents a simplified overview of the sequence of steps taken in the financing process which lasted approximately three months from start to finish. Since banks see many requests for funding and considerble time is required to follow up on each, an important step was determining, after a brief review of the materials provided to us, whether the basic "eonomic entity" was viable. In this case, the size and quality of the reserves, the inherent operating cost characteristics, the sales arrangements, the management/labor situation and Rapid's principles all appeared to be sound enough to warrant investing the time necessary to do a thorough analysis of the project. Once this decision was made, the evaluation and analytic process shown in Figure 2 was initiated. The first and most fundamental concern of any banker is whether the loan will be paid back as scheduled from the cash flow generated by the project. The amount of debt relative to the owner's equity is of course crucial in such a determination. Before the debt/equity issue was addressed, however, a number of more qualitative factors had to be studied and if

THE following description of methods for conducting gas-producer tests is probably the first attempt to give the subject an analytical, thorough and comprehensive treatment. In some cases where tests have been made, the methods have been so unsystematic and ambiguous that it has been impossible to secure comparable results. To eliminate this difficulty, the following provisional code of gas-producer tests-which has some resemblance to the code of boiler-trials of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers-has been developed. The primary object in testing a gas-producer is to determine whether the producer is working satisfactorily or, what is the same. thing, to see if the efficiency is as high as it should be with the type of producer in question, and also to find out if the composition of the resulting gas is adapted to the work it has to do. In order that the test shall be of any value, it must be thorough and comprehensive, and must be conducted with skill and care. When so conducted, the test will reveal the economy of the producer; and, by making suitable changes, the efficiency will often be increased very much. As a result of the tests made by Jenkins, 1 the efficiency was raised from 56.2 to 71.2 per cent. This shows the large saving that may frequently be made in the fuel-consumption by studying the results of a careful test.. The log of the test, given in Fig. 1, shows that, just as soon as the temperature became regular, the percentage of CO, decreased and that of CO increased.

As a result of research work done during the planning of the Kokkola zinc plant it was found that a very efficient cementation of impurities from the suspension obtained after leaching copper and cadmium cakes was achieved by adding zinc dust to the batch without filtration after the leaching. All elements nobler than cadmium are precipitated with the exception of lead, which must be removed in a separate step. Using pure zinc dust, free from noble metals, the cadmium sponge produced will only contain elements that can be re- moved from cadmium by meltrefining. The process is thus : 1. Leaching and purification 2. Removal of lead (with BaCO3) 3. Precipitation of cadmium sponge with pure zinc dust 4. Meltrefining of briquetted sponge with NaOH for removal of Zn (and others) The paper deals with the removal of the most critical elements, i.e. Co, Ni, As, Sb, Cu, Pb, T1 in the liquid phase and Zn and T1 in the melt. A survey is also given of the behaviour of most of the other elements normally found in Cd raw material, such as Ge, Te, Se, Sn, In, Ga. It is shown that in most cases the benefit of an electrolysis in Cd production is very limited. In Kokkola 99.998% Cd is achieved by this method, but in favourable cases it may be possible to come quite close to five nines.

DuriKg the past two or three years I have seen statements regarding the first discovery of fullers' earth in this country that seem to require correction or modification. One appears again in the Mineral Resources of the United States for 1909, part II., p. 738, where it is said that 'fullers' earth was firat discovered in the United States at Quincy, Fla., in 1893." In this connection the following bit of unpublished history concerning fullers' earth in the State of Arkansas is worthy of attention. In April, 1891, when I was State Geologist of Arkansas, a Swede named John Olsen, formerly a copper-miner in Michigan, but then living south of Little Rock, brought me a sample of what he thought mas fullers' earth. He reported that it was from near the town of Alexander, the locality being 1 S. 13 W., section 8, SW. quarter of the SE. quarter. My chemist, Dr. R. N. THE development of the isostatic idea during the last century would make an interesting paper in itself. But the various steps in the development have been covered in a number of papers and books which are readily available. Therefore this short paper should not give space to. the historical phases of the subject. Isostasy is really an old idea, but it is only in the last few decades that it has taken on any great prominence or importance in the study of earth phenomena. It is really remarkable how closely Dutton' sensed the isostatic principle 40 years or more ago. His general principles of isostasy as outlined by him have stood the test of time and fit in closely with the general ideas held today. It would seem, however, that some of his views with regard to the application of isostasy to geological processes must be modified or abandoned.

In attempting to study precipitation from a tetragonal lattice, using solid solutione of bismuth in tin, it was found that although a Widmanstätten pattern is observed1,4 only a qualitative analysis of the orientation relationships is possible, because of the unusual structural changes that accompany the precipitation process. Microscopical Studies Alloys were made from Chempur tin (Standard samples 42b and 426, National Bureau of Standards), and bismuth (Kahl-baum C.P.) by melting weighed quantities together under palm oil, stirring well, and castilig in a heated graphite mold. The polishing and etching techniques employed largely govern the visibility of the structural changes. The preliminary surfacing operations were similar to those recommended by Villela and Bergekoff,5 through Behr-Manning 3/0 abrasive papers, lubricated by a solution of paraffin in kerosene. A rough metallographic polish was next given, using a thin cotton cloth charged with relevigated alumina (maximum particle size of about 4µ) and soap solution; repeated etching and polishing served to remove disturbed metal. For high-power examination better preparation was necessary. It was found that on such soft metals the threads of the fabric, rather than the abrasive, cause most of the scratching. Cotton outing flannel, which had been brushed so that the nap lay down, was fairly satisfactory, but a heavy grade of silk velvet (not the noncrushable kind) was found to be better, especially after some use. A better procedure was as follows: The metal lap was warmed slightly, and a 4-in. circle of woolen broadcloth was cemented to its center by a thin film of melted paraffin. The broadcloth was then moistened with water, and a 30 to 40 per cent solution of sodium hydroxide heated to about 50°C. was poured over it, allowed to stand for I to 2 min. and then washed off. It was neither necessary nor desirable to remove all the sodium hydroxide from the cloth, since its etching action aided in the removal of the flowed layer from the sample. The cloth was then charged with a paste of the relevigated alumina in water. Since this lap did not remove deep scratches, it was necessary previously to polish the specimen on some material such as the silk velvet. The sodium hydroxide softens and partly gelatinizes the woolen lap covering, permitting a scratch-free polish, but its action continues, and the cloth deterioratcs after about 24 hr. This is not serious, because a new lap can be prepared in about 5 min., and only small pieces of cloth are used. Etching with a strongly acid solution of ferric chloride was found satisfactory for removing the flowed layer. For the final etching, the most satisfactory reagent was that of Tafls,7 the formula for which is: FeC13.6H2O, 2 grams; HC1, 5 c.c.; H2O, 30 c.c.; C2H5OH (95 per cent), 60 C.C.
