The increasing scale of mining operations over the past decade, particularly in connection with the exploitation of large bodies of comparatively low-grade copper ores, has made necessary the study of the behavior of rock under failure. When extractions of as high as 40,000 tons a day are reached in steam-shovel operations and as high as 20,000 tons per day in underground mining operations, it is evident that excavations soon become of such size that the behavior of the rock will often be dependent on fundamental principles applicable to more or less homogeneous materials under stress, rather than on weathering or local planes of weakness. In the ordinary rock excavations encountered in civil-engineering practice, such as excavations for subways, highways, railroads, etc., rock faces are not carried to depths sufficient to develop any pressures, or consequently any failures, except those due to loose masses resulting from local planes of weakness. When, however, orebodies whose tonnage is measured by hundreds of thousands are to be extracted by steam-shovel operations in open pits, it is necessary to determine if possible in advance the slopes that the sides of the pits will assume, for these slopes influence the shape of the excavations and thereby the amount of ore that may be extracted by the open-pit method. When large orebodies are mined underground at depths of 300 to 500 ft. (91 to 152 m.) by caving methods, the surface subsiding as the ore is withdrawn, it is necessary to determine in advance the outermost limits of fracture in the subsiding surface, for on the delineation of these limits depends the location of surface improvements, mills, smelters, etc. and also the location of development work, such as hoisting shafts, main haulage levels, and all other underground openings that must remain undisturbed during the period of ore extraction. Heretofore, in civil-engineering practice, it has been assumed that earth and rock behave differently in failure. For the calculation of earth pressures, formulas are used in which the assumption is made that earth banks fail by sliding along the slope determined by the frictional resistance of the material. Measurements of the electromotive force of the cell at 995°C have shown that the cell may be used to detennine the zinc content of molten Cu-Zn alloys to the nearest 0.05 wt pct. The cell is used for brass melts to which no ZnO is added intentionally, because essentially all oxygen in the Cu-Zn-O system is present in the form of ZnO. The cell is also used to detev,nine the thernodynamic activity of zinc for Cu-Zn al1oys of the brass composition range, from which the equilibrium partial pressure of zinc for such alloy may also be calculated. The electrochemical measurement of the concentration of the most active metal in other engneering- alloy systems by a similar technique is also considered. IN recent years there have been many studies concerning the direct electrochemical measurement of oxygen content in molten engineering metals.' These investigations employ galvanic cells in which the electrolytes are various solid mixed-oxides which conduct current by movement of oxide ion vacancies under the influence of an oxygen potential gradient. Similar cells have also been used to measure the thermodynamic properties of mixing of solid alloys,' one component of which has a much greater affinity for oxygen than the other component(s). One alloy system of obvious engineering importance comprised of two metals of greatly differing affinity for oxygen is copper-zinc. At the casting temperature of molten brasses, the zinc concentration is very difficult to control not only because its vapor pressure is very high, but also because of its high affinity for oxygen to form ZnO. Inasmuch as brass castings may be required to have a zinc concentration within very narrow limits, it would be advantageous for the brass industry to have a means for quickly measuring the zinc content in the molten alloy just prior to pouring. A calculation based on earlier thermodynamic studies of oxygen and zinc in dilute solution in binary Cu-O and CU-Z' alloys indicates that the oxygen concentration of molten 70 wt pct Cu-30 wt pct Zn brass must be much less than 1 ppm for the separate phase ZnO not to exist in the ternary Cu-Zn-O system. Thus it can be assumed that all molten brasses, both in the laboratory and in the foundry, are sufficiently saturated with oxygen for the separate phase ZnO to be present. In view of the foregoing reasons, the cell investigated at 995°C for the purpose of measuring the zinc concentration in molten copper-zinc alloys, particularly those of brass compositions. In this cell the left hand electrode is a reference electrode comprised of a mixture of the pure powders of nickel and nickel oxide, to which a platinum contact is made. The electrode of interest is a molten Cu-Zn alloy of unknown zinc concentration with a tantalum wire contact. The electrolyte is the commercially available (Zircoa) calcia stabilized zirconia. The ZnO in the Cu-Zn electrode compartment is not intentionally added, but is naturally present as a result of the infinitesimal amount of oxygen required for its formation in this alloy system. In cell [A] nickel oxide is reduced at the cathode where O= represents the electrolyte. At the anode dissolved zinc of the Cu-Zn alloy is oxidized to form ZnO(s) in its standard state Thus the overall reaction is for which the molar free energy change is where 5 is the Faraday equivalent (23,063 cal per v equivalent), is the electromotive force of the cell in volts after correction for the Pt-Ta thermocouple, FOf (ZO) and AFF (NO) are the standard molar free energies of formation of the respective oxides, and a2n is the thermodynamic activity of zinc in the molten Cu-Zn alloy. The reference state of zinc in this case is taken to be the pure liquid. At constant temperature all the terms of Eq. [I] are constant except and azn Thus since all other participants in the electrochemical reaction are in their standard states, the change in the electromotive force of Cell [A] is represented only by a change of the thermodynamic activity of zinc at constant temperature. The zinc concentration is related to the activity by sampling the alloy for chemical analysis after cell measurements are taken. EXPERIMENTAL A typical cell construction is shown in Fig. 1. This and other experimental details were similar to that described earlier with the exception of some minor modifications which are detailed below.

THE discovery of petroleum in Pennsylvania in 1859 marked the birth of an industry of paramount importance. Spreading from - Oil Creek, this remarkable industry may be said to have embraced the earth in a little more than half a century. Those who made the discovery little realized its deep significance or far reaching influence on our national life. For over sixty years, during which time this nation has created and developed the oil industry to a high state of efficiency and' carried its activities to all parts of the world, we have' at all times been the leaders in the production of crude oil and in the development of its technology. During the unprecedented growth and expanse of the oil industry there has been an increasing dependency of our basic industries on, petroleum, until at present it has become essential to our national existence. To meet the ever increasing demand for petroleum and its products, we have explored, at one time or another, for their oil possibilities, practically all parts of the sedimentary rock area in the United States. Furthermore, detailed surface and, in many places, subsurface studies have been made of all the promising regions; over 640,000 jewells have 'been drilled for. oil since the beginning of the industry; $12,000,000,000 have been spent in this work; seventeen major fields exceeding 100,000 bbl. daily production and more than a thousand minor pools have been opened up, and 8,000,000,000 bbl. 'of oil have been produced, or an amount nearly equal to the estimated future reserves of the United States made in 1921.

Occasionally it is interesting, and sometimes useful, to review the past for early references to our industry, and to learn of the trials and travail passed through before it arrived where it now is- and the results of such a review follow. This subject covers much ground, therefore it must be treated in a general way rather than in detail in this paper. Personnel To approach the measure of a mine, it is, of course, essential that the personnel be measured, and this measuring must be done in a circumspect manner and conclusions must be reached slowly. There may be one unit in the personnel of an organization that may be out of step with the remainder of the organization, not always because of lack of ability, but because of misplacement or lack of proper measurement of his capabilities. Too much time can scarcely be spent in the study or measure of the personnel ; in fact, a manager or a superintendent of a mine never completes his work along this line. Mine or Plant Just as no two men are alike, so no two mines or plants are alike; and yet there are many similarities. Find out what the similarities are, and this will help to make clear the dissimilarities. Try to visualize details of the difficulties, not because you will have to deal with them yourself, but to consider them in later studies of general problems. To outline all the steps to be taken in familiarizing oneself with a plant or operation would be impossible, but the following points may be of interest in any investigation. The study of a mine is generally made backwards-—that is to say, one sees the finished product first-—-but this is immaterial, because each step must be considered separately in any event. As a rule, there are certain heads under which the different features of mining can be placed, as follows: Ventilation.—Ventilation is usually the most important item in power cost and safety, especially in gassy mines. Quantity of air, water gage and power consumption, and finally analysis of the return air in full return and separate splits should be considered. Type of fan and type of power unit should enter into this study because it is important to view expenditures which are going on 24 hr. a day and 36.5 days in the

FRom the beginning of its activities, the members of the National Production Committee have felt that the following points were essential to the success of its work: The operators must feel that their operations were not 100 per cent. efficient; that they should be courteous and fair in their treatment of their employees; and that they should set an example of hard work and patriotic interest in increased production. Every move made must appeal to the sense of fairness of all parties concerned. The men must feel that in working more faithfully, and consequently producing more coal, they are rendering a distinct service to their Government in the time of its great need. As the workers feel that greater efficiency on their part results only in greater profits to the operators, the advantage to the operator should be lost sight of, as far as possible, and the advantage to the Government in fighting the war emphasized. Both operators and workers should know that the Government considered increased production an obligation, and opportunity for service, resting on both parties and not on the operators or the workers alone, and that both parties could very much better the efficiency of the pre-war period. Had the committee intimated that it thought the coal shortage was due entirely to the idleness and inefficiency of the workers, its campaign would have failed, for the men would have resented the charge because only too frequently their efforts to produce more coal were thwarted by bad management; besides, the operators would have lacked stimulus to better effort. On the other hand, had the impression been given that the committee thought that the coal shortage was due entirely to bad management, the operators would have resented the charge because only too frequently their efforts to produce more coal were thwarted by the idleness and inefficiency of the workers; and the workers, having been thus indirectly pronounced 100 per cent. efficient and patriotic, would have lacked stimulus to better effort.

IN the last 15 years industrial use of ground water has more than doubled, and in 1951 amounted to 5 billion gallons per day. A similar sharp increase in the utilization of ground water for irrigation and public-water supply occurred in the same period. In many areas rapid increase in withdrawal from wells has taken place almost entirely unhampered by regulatory control and with little or no integration of effort. As might be expected, the chief interest in many regions has been maximum production rather than sustained perennial yield. As a result, widespread depletion of underground reservoirs and deterioration of the quality of the water stored in them has taken place in many areas, even though total pumpage in the United States is far below ultimate potential. Of even more concern is the fact that excessive withdrawal has drawn salt water into the reservoirs beneath many heavily populated centers along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts, causing costly abandonment of pumping plants.' Many hydrologists expect that consumption of water will rise rapidly in the near future, and some predict that industrial requirements will more than double in the next decade.2,3 Thus it appears likely that the draft on many already heavily pumped underground reservoirs will be greatly increased and the search for additional sources of usable ground water intensified in years to come. In view of this, industry as a whole will be forced more and more to recognize the potentialities and limitations of ground-water reservoirs and to utilize them more effectively to prevent costly water shortages and disruption of production. Through painful experience, some industries are already well aware of the need for effective water utilization, and have managed individually or through joint effort to check trends threatening to deplete underground reservoirs completely or to impair the quality of the water. Various remedial measures have been used to bring about successful management of local or regional ground-water resources. Of these, replen-ishment of aquifers by recharge wells or basins has played an important role in overcoming some ground water problems. Artificial recharge of underground reservoirs by water spreading has been practiced successfully in the United States for many years. In the West it has become an important method of salvaging flood run-off for irrigation of crops and maintenance of public water-supply reserves, and it is used to some extent in parts of the East. Artificial recharge by means of wells, on the other hand, is a relatively new development. Until recently it was employed in only a few areas, principally along the East coast. For the last few years, in the ever increasing search for additional water supplies, industry has had greater recourse to this method. Utilization of recharge wells to control the temperature and quality of underground water supplies is also being considered seriously. Operation of recharge wells, like water spreading, is governed largely by local conditions. It requires water relatively low in turbidity, whereas in some areas water spreading has been used successfully with water of high turbidity and silt content. However, water spreading must be employed in large areas and can be carried on effectively only where aquifers crop out at the surface. Recharge wells can be used in limited space. Recharge wells are similar to production wells except that the water flows in the opposite direction. Thus any water-bearing bed that will yield water to wells may be recharged by wells. Often, however, the water available for recharge is of a different character and temperature from that existing in the ground-water reservoir and if transmitted directly underground from a recharge well to a production well might require expensive or difficult treatment before it could be used. Fortunately the physical characteristics of reservoir beds, which control the movement and behavior of ground water, are generally not homogeneous. Moreover, the movement of ground water is very slow because of the frictional resistance of the reservoir beds. By taking full advantage of hydrologic and geologic conditions, it is therefore possible in many instances to bring about favorable changes of temperature and dilution as the water moves from the recharge wells underground to the production wells. Furthermore, if the natural quality or temperature of ground water is unfavorable for industrial purposes, recharge wells may be used to introduce water of more favorable quality or temperature into the ground-water reservoir. When water is discharged into a recharge well, the head in the well is increased. Because of this, a cone of elevation is produced on the water table or the artesian pressure surface in the area surrounding the well. The cone of elevation is similar to the cone of depression produced around a pumping well except that the apex of the cone is above the water table or artesian pressure surface. Thus if a recharge well and a production well tapping the same water-bearing bed are close together, as would be the case at many industrial plants, some of the water discharged from the recharge well would be drawn into the production well within a short time. Under such conditions it is apparent that water of unfavorable temperature and chemical characteristics should not be used for recharging. The more important ground-water reservoirs in the United States often consist of alternating layers of impermeable beds and porous material that will yield water readily to wells. Physical characteristics of individual beds in a ground-water reservoir may not persist over great distances, the impermeable layers grading into beds that will yield large quantities of water. Abstract of an address delivered before the Royal Canadian Institute, Toronto, April 16, briefly outlining the importance of mining in the United States, in Canada, and in the world. Comparison is made of the mineral production for 1886, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1929, showing that in the 43 years from 1886 to 1929 that of the world increased nearly tenfold, of the United States over twelvefold and of Canada thirtyfold, but that Canada's output was equivalent to only 2 per cent of the world total and to 5 per cent of that of the United States in 1929. Statistical tables and graphs show value of production, percentage of world production contributed by Canada and the United States, etc. The mining situation in Canada is briefly reviewed: only those American engineers who have had occasion to examine the figures appreciate the rapidity of growth of Canadian mineral production. The treatment of minerals involves vast complex industries. When we are producing, say, 6 billion annually, the employment of 2 million workers provides indirect support to perhaps 10 million people. Exploiting mineral deposits is peculiar in certain ways, for the deposits are exhaustible, are of rare occurrence when measured in terms of outcrop area compared to total earth area, and may suddenly be handicapped or superseded by new discoveries; moreover, the economic position of the contained metals is 'affected by the use of scrap metal and the existence of invisible stocks. The largest and most valuable of the mineral deposits are not the metals, but rather the fuels. Laboratory and plant data covering 12 different operations show that lower than "standard" ball mill speeds increase grinding efficiency. In the case of high pulp-level mills, the gain is so great that the increase in capital cost of the larger lower speed mill will pay for itself in less than a year's time.

On several occasions, when 60-40 brass is first obtained in the beta condition by quenching at about 825" C. and is then reheated, the writers have noticed that reerystallization will take place in the form of twin crystals at the grain boundaries of the original beta crystals. It was, therefore, thought that interesting results would be obtained if this twinning process was studied further, especially as to the temperature at which it first occurs. The material used in the investigation was a bar of extruded muntz metal, 1/2 in. in diameter, and of the following composition: Copper, 60.21 per cent.; zinc, 39.73 per cent.; lead, trace; iron, trace; tin, nil. Specimens 1 in. in length were sawed from this bar and a hole was drilled into the side of each specimen until it reached the center, and the tip of a platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouple was inserted. A small Hoskins' resistance-type electric furnace was used for heating the specimens. The specimens were first heated at 840' C. for 2 hr. and then quenched ' in cold water, in order to get the material entirely in the beta state. In every case, in the reheating process, the furnace was brought to the desired temperature before the specimen was introduced. The time occupied in preheating was from 20 to 30 min. By sawing back 1/4 in. on each side of the hole, two parts were obtained from each specimen and duplicate observations were possible. The specimens were held at the reheating temperatures for periods of 15 min., 30 min., 1, 2, and 4 hr. All specimens were etched with a freshly prepared mixture of equal volumes of concentrated NH4IOH and H2O2.

FISHER, Hollomon, and Turnbull have developed a theory for the nucleation of martensite. They first tested the theory on Fe-C alloys and low alloy steels. The major factor influencing nucleation of martensite was considered to be statistical composition fluctuations occurring in small regions at high temperature and frozen-in on quenching. These local regions of varying size and composition serve as nucleation centers. They become supercritical, one by one, as temperature is progressively lowered, resulting in temperature-dependent or athermal transformation. Fisher next applied nucleation theory to substi-tutional solid solution alloys. Detailed predictions were made for Fe-Ni alloys because of the availability of free energy data on this system. It was shown that composition fluctuations that were significant energy-wise did not occur, and nucleation frequencies could be calculated from average properties of the system. Nucleation was predicted to occur as time-dependent and having the functional relationship to give a C curve of nucleation frequency vs temperature. The analysis further predicted that the nucleation frequency was extremely sensitive to composition. Experimentally, it would be found that the transformation in some compositions is so slow that measurable amounts will not form in a reasonable length of time. With other compositions, only slightly different, the nucleation frequency becomes so great that the material becomes transformed while still distant in temperature from the maximum nucleation frequency. On quenching an alloy of such composition, the observed transformation kinetics would be similar to those found in Fe-C alloys. Cech and Hollomon repeated experiments of Kurdjumov n which the kinetics of transformation were similar to those predicted by Fisher for Fe-Ni alloys. The alloy studied in this investigation contained 73.3 pct Fe, 23.0 pct Ni, and 3.7 pct Mn. Fisher,' using an idealized model for the extent of transformation as a function of the number of martensite crystals per grain of parent phase, derived nucleation frequencies from the transformation curves of Cech and Hollomon. Complicating influences such as coupling effects between grains in the polycrystalline specimens were neglected. Nevertheless, excellent agreement was found between the theoretically and experimentally derived nucleation frequencies. These experiments, however, could not provide a critical test of the theory. Experimental nucleation frequencies could vary widely from those calculated, depending upon the extent of deviation from ideal partitioning and the extent of coupling effects. Further, since the compositions of material theoretically analyzed and experimentally determined were different, the free energy changes involved in the experimental work could only be estimated. Also, the effect of heterogeneities on the transformation kinetics was not considered. For these reasons, it was decided that experiments designed to test the validity of the Fisher analysis must be conducted on binary Fe-Ni alloys, which were the ones considered theoretically by Fisher. The martensite transformation in Fe-Ni alloys has been the subject of considerable study. Machlin and Cohen have shown that transformation proceeds in a manner quite unlike that in any other ferrous alloy system. They found that single crystals would transform to a large extent in a single burst. In large grain polycrystalline specimens, frequently more than one grain and sometimes the whole specimen would transform at the same instant in this manner. Results on filings indicated that different particles would undergo the burst transformation at widely different temperatures. These results support the conclusion that the transformation behavior could not be described by a single nucleation frequency as would be the case if the nucleation were homogeneous. It appeared that further work was necessary to define the factors responsible for burst-type transformation, so that the conditions could be altered to favor homogeneous nucleation of martensite if such could be accomplished. ON the headwaters of the Hudson Riser, in a sparsely populated area of the north woods at Tahawus, N. Y., thirty miles from the nearest railroad, is the Maclntyre property of National Lead Co. Operations involve the mining and processing of titaniferous iron ore to produce ilmenite concentrate, and magnetite concentrate containing vanadium, for use in the production of iron, titanium, and vanadium in the war program. Accordingly, Maclntyre at present is classed as a war plant. More than 3000 long tons of ore is ruined daily by opencut methods and treated in an ore concentrating plant.

Introduction The Bulletin of the Institute for March, 1911, is chiefly devoted to papers upon the iron ores of northeastern Cuba. At that time information about the new developments in the peculiar brown hematites of the region was becoming widely circulated and interest was especially keen. For some years exploration had been conducted with pits and trenches and so great an area had been shown to contain ore in the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas or San Felipe districts, that the reserves conveniently situated for the consumption of American furnaces were estimated as quite two billions of tons. In general, the art of securing copper from sulphide ores or concentrates may be said to consist of : (1) separation, in the molten state, of copper sulphide with some iron sulphide, from the great bulk of gangue-material, followed by (2) elimination of sulphur and iron from the molten matte, by oxidation and fluxing, leaving metallic copper. The definition is made broad enough to cover the general practice, whether or not the ore or concentrate is given a preliminary roast for the removal of surplus sulphur. The above process, which I will designate as the smelting process, makes necessary the presence in the ore, or the addition thereto, of such silica, lime, and iron as may be necessary for the formation of a light and fusible slag, together with sufficient sulphur and iron for the formation of copper-matte, and also the addition to the matte of sufficient silica for the oxidation and fluxing-out of the iron. These items, together with the cost of fuel sufficient for melting the mass, constitute important items of cost in the copper-smelting process. Numerous cases where fluxing-materials are scarce or dear, or where fuel is expensive, have caused special attention to be given recently to the wet process of copper-extraction, which may be designated as consisting of forming soluble copper salts which are then washed or leached out of the ore or concentrates by dissolving in water or acid. PLANS are well matured for the joint meeting of the Coal Division and the Ohio Section of the Institute at Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 27 and 28, at which a large attendance is expected. The proceedings for a day and a half will be devoted largely to the uses of coal, the program providing for two technical sessions in the auditorium of Battelle Memorial Institute (505 King Ave.) on Friday, and various plant inspec¬tions on Saturday morning. By way of diversion on Saturday afternoon arrangements have been made for attendance en bloc at the football game between Ohio State and Northwestern, 100 seats having been reserved for the game at $2.40 each-as long as they last. An inventory of the high lights of the meeting would be incomplete without reference to the informal banquet at the Deshler-Wallick hotel on Friday evening, for which Eli T. Conner, Chairman of the Coal Division, is down for a talk, and Howard N. Eavenson, Vice-president of the Institute, will be the principal speaker. The program in detail is as follows:

STRESS-induced twin boundary motion in the AuCd ß'phase (52.5 at. pct Au 47.5 at. pct Cd having an orthorhombic structure (space group D h)' was discussed for the case of transformation twins.' Mechanical twinning, i.e., introduction of new twin orientations by the applied stress was sometimes observed in the ß' phase which contained two transformation twin orientations. (See Ref. 2 for experimental details.) The transformation twins terminated at the mechanical twin boundary; the two initial orientations having been twinned to the new orientation as shown in Fig. l. In a "hard" tensile instrument, formation of each mechanical twin was accompanied by a sharp drop in load (and an audible click) resulting in a typical serrated load-extension curve. The mechanical twins increased in width and additional twins were nucleated as the load increased until the entire specimen was occupied by the mechanical twin orientation. A restoring force2 caused the mechanical twin and transformation twin boundaries to return towards their initial configuration on releasing the load. In a stabilized specimen* the total strain introduced by mechanical twinning was recovered on releasing the applied stress. Initial and final microstructures were identical. After decreasing gradually to a critical width, mechanical twins suddenly disappeared accompanied by audible clicks and sharp increases in load (measured at a constant rate of crosshead motion in a "hard" machine). Mechanical twins could be stabilized in any position by maintaining the applied load for a sufficient time, indicating a decrease in restoring force with time similar to that observed for transformation twins.' Orientation relationships for mechanical and transformation twins were determined and are shown in Fig. 2. The mechanical twin, T3, was twin related to transformation twin, T,, by reflection in (1ll), and twin related to transformation twin, T2, by reflection in (111)T, .
