The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) is a practical rock mass classification system for use in design of mine openings. Data can be obtained for this purpose from exploration drill cores if simple geotechnical logging and rock mechanics testing is conducted. The CMRR is an excellent method to quantify rock characteristics for engineering purposes. It bridges the gap between geologic description and engineering design. The CMRR was utilized in the design of a 10,000 fl. long coal belt conveyor tunnel connecting an Eastern Associated Coal Corp. mine and preparation plant in Boone County, West Virginia. Data gathering and analysis techniques are discussed involving the calculation of the CMRR and its application in the design of the tunnel, which was driven through a thin coal bed zone. The preliminary findings have correlated well with actual roof and mining conditions encountered during driving the tunnel and it is concluded the CMRR is an effective method to utilize geologic data from exploration core holes for engineering analysis and design.

This paper describes the experiences with the application of the Coal Mining Roof Rating (CMRR) System to South African strata conditions. Roof classification studies using the CMRR system were undertaken as part of a SIMRAC investigation into falls of ground in South Mean collieries. Colliery roof rating exercises were undertaking in a range of geotechnical conditions from shallow level coal seams under flat topography to workings with cover depths of greater than 300m A comparison is made between the CMRR and other Rock Mass Rating systems used to classify different roof geotechnical conditions. The need for geological discontinuity orientation, blasting and rockmass stress adjustments to the CMRR is discussed. The effects of acid mine water on strata weatherability and the need to incorporate immersion tests using acid mine water are also detailed. In addition limited correlation is given between CMRR values and other geotechnical factors such as joint trace length, joint shear strength, joint orientation, weatherability and roof damage due to horizontal stress. Taking cognizance of these observations, a concept of stress induced roof damage triggering is discussed.

A new integrated CFD-combined reactors approach is proposed for the description of processes in metallurgical vessels. CFD simulations were used to obtain the melt flow pattern in the vessels (ladle, tundish, and continuous caster mold). From these simulations, the characteristic curves were derived: (i) the residence time distribution curves (RTD) for flow-through systems (at tundish exit or at dendrite coherency surface in the mold) and (ii) the mixing curves for closed systems (ladle). In the next step, the melt flow was represented in a “combined reactors” system consisting of a combination of unit reactors (Plug Flow, Mixer, and Recirculated Volume). An inverse simulation was used to define the volumes of the reactor units and the melt flow rates between them by fitting to the characteristic curves from both methods (CFD and combined reactors). The suggested approach is demonstrated for multiple designs of Ar-stirred ladles, tundish, and SEN. This methodology can be used to enhance traditional post-processing CFD analysis and also as a tool for on-line process control.

Toppling failure of a jointed rock slope was studied by using the distinct lattice spring model (DLSM). Compared with the classical discrete element model, the DLSM has the advantages of free calibration of micro-mechanical parameters and easy to represent discontinuities, and is more computationally efficient. In this work, the DLSM was used to investigate the toppling failure of jointed rock slopes. The numerical simulation was verified against experimental data from a centrifuge model test on a jointed rock slope. Both the horizontal deformations and failure pattern observed in the centrifuge test were reasonably reproduced using the DLSM. Then, the mechanism of the flexural toppling failure was studied numerically by using a parameter analysis. This paper presents some results of dynamic loading tests performed on concrete piles driven in soft clay formation. The load transfer mechanism, measured in the dynamic increasing energy test (DIET), under blows of growing energy, is described in terms of mobilized normal forces diagrams and unitary local friction and displacements. It was observed that the lateral skin friction grows up to a maximum, in the soft clay layer and, gradually diminishes to a residual value when the system presents the maximum mobilized resistance. It may be concluded that the rupture load is not equal to the maximum mobilized point resistance plus the maximum mobilized local friction as suggested by most of static bearing capacity formulae.

"Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. The implementation of these solutions will ensure that the PGM industry thrives and reaches its potential of growing production to more than 322 t by 2020 (Baxter, 2016)."

Cake filtration is a complex process and the cake constructure is very difficult to describe in theory. Cake constructure parameters, such as the cake prosity, pore size shape and even its distribution, are main factors influencing the filtration results but have not been thoroughly understood yet. In this paper the fractal theory, an effective mathematical method in describing the self-similar phenomenon is used to investigate the filter cake constructure, and the scanning electron microscope and automatic image analyzer are used to measure the cake constructure. Cakes which formed in different condition are examined and the fractal dimension of the cake are calculated. The study shows that the constructure of the filter cake can be approximated by Sierpinski fractal geometry and that the fractal dimension of filter cake, related to the particle characteristics, slurry concentration and filtration pressure is a good parameter to describe the pore size distribution and the cake penetrability.

"Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) and Analysis of Retreat Mine Pillar Stability (ARMPS) treat the pillar as a passive structure that is designed to carry overburden dead-weight. This dead-weight is calculated by simple rules based on the geometry of the mining, such as “tributary area theory,” “pressure arch theory,” and “abutment angle theory.” Although the pressure arch loading approach indirectly accounts for the generally stiffer overburden response of narrow and deep panels, it does not include the effect of specific geology of the overburden in load calculations. The relationship between successful pillar layouts and overburden geology can be incorporated into the load calculation by using the Ground Response Curve (GRC) approach.This paper introduces the GRC modeling methodology to investigate the effect of overburden geology and excavation geometry on load transfer mechanisms using seven field measurement case studies from four U.S. mines. It was also shown that the modeling methodology used to derive GRC in this study approximates mining-induced stresses and deformations within 5% of the values measured in the field.INTRODUCTIONFrith and Reed (2017) stated that current state-of-the-art pillar design methods ignore the overburden mechanics and use estimated dead-weight of overburden to compute pillar sizes. In the United States and around the world, overburden loading is typically estimated by simple geometric rules, generally with the tributary area theory (TAT). The specific overburden mechanics, structural competence of the overburden strata, geology, in situ stresses, and overburden/pillar interactions are typically ignored. However, these important mechanical responses affect the stability of the mine pillars and openings; therefore, they also affect the safety of the mine workers.Research conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) after the Crandall Canyon mine disaster (Esterhuizen, Mark, and Murphy, 2010) showed that small panel width-to-depth ratios and stiff-strong overburden result in a reduction of the observed pillar loads, much smaller than the TAT estimate. In fact, as a response to the Crandall Canyon disaster, Mark (2010) implemented a pressure arch loading approach into the latest ARMPS program to recognize the inherently greater stability of narrow panels at depth. The pressure arch approach is a first logical step to introducing non-tributary area loading into the practical ARMPS program. Although the pressure arch loading indirectly accounts for the generally stiffer overburden response of narrow and deep panels, it does not include the effect of specific geology and mechanical response of overburden in the load calculations."

The Hardgrove grindability test, commonly used in coal characterization, was conducted on 13 Mississippian carbonates from Kentucky, Tennessee and Illinois. The results demonstrated that the grindability increases with a decrease in the Si02/(MgCO3+CaCO3) ratio, with fine-grained and petrographically-complex stones having lower grindabilities. Also, the relationship between the Bond work index and Hardgrove grindability is significant.

This paper outlines a comparison of heavy liquid and heavy suspension separation methods for iron ore characterisation.As part of Arrium MiningÆs program to improve its knowledge of ore types being processed in its two hematite ore beneficiation plants (OBP), metallurgical evaluation of hematite feed for the upgrading process has become a major focus.Iron ore deposits almost always contain more than one valuable (and relatively dense) iron mineral. Iron ores are found with a range of iron contents, giving rise to density variations.At present the industry relies on heavy liquid separation techniques for the evaluation of iron ore samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. There are only a few high-density liquids available, which are both high-cost and highly toxic.Low-toxicity solutions that can be utilised at relative densities up to 3.0 have been developed. However, highly-toxic organic liquids are required presently to achieve relative densities beyond 3.0.Bromoform which has a specific gravity (SG) of 2.89, and diiodomethane (SG 3.31) are commonly used; both present significant health and safety hazards.æClericiÆs solutionÆ (mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate) provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. ClericiÆs solution is highly toxic and testing is currently conducted by a limited number of laboratories worldwide.An alternative to ClericiÆs solution and organic liquids is a low-toxicity, high-SG, suspension technique, which has been demonstrated successfully for heavy mineral sands. This heavy suspension method employs mixtures of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions.Heavy liquid separation is not commonly used as part of routine iron ore feed characterisation due to the expensive, toxic and time consuming nature of the technique. Our results show that the heavy suspensions method can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separation and are outlined and results compared with results using ClericiÆs solution presented.Heavy suspension technique provides a theoretical/absolute separation of a particular sample. By placing an iron ore sample in a suspension of a particular density, it produces two products: a sink fraction and a float fraction. As iron oxides-hydroxyoxides are denser than the gangue minerals associated with the ore, particles that have high iron content will sink and the particles with gangue association will float. This process is repeated over several densities, thus also enabling separation of the constituent iron ore phases. A theoretical grade and a theoretical mass recovery can be calculated. With these calculations, a grade-mass recovery curve can be constructed for any element that is of interest.This type of characterisation can be used to either prepare OBP feed-piles of known processing characteristics, or to benchmark the performance of the process against what can be theoretically achieved on a continuous basis.CITATION:Begelhole, J, Jasper, J and Koroznikova, L, 2013. X-ray analysis systems installed in Canadian concentrators to-date may be broadly classified as wavelength dispersive analysers whereas the installation described herein is an energy dispersive x-ray analysis system. Energy dispersive x-ray analysis techniques may utilize radioactive sources to provide primary x-rays for excitation of elements and separate the secondary x-rays on the basis of energy levels. In contrast wavelength dispersive analysers apply high voltage x-ray tubes to provide primary x-rays and utilize crystals to disperse and thereby separate x-rays generated by bombardment of the sample."

This paper discusses how a mill uses off-site data hosting approach to effectively utilize an entire suite of advanced applications to optimize daily operations, without incurring the overhead of on-site systems, staff and support. Details of the solution are provided, together with a live view of actual plant operations. Security and authentication mechanisms are also outlined so that users may gain an appreciation of the actual security of the remotely hosted data. A number of Web-hosted software applications provide direct connectivity to the database offering rapid and deterministic response times to clients. A 24x7 help-desk is available to authorized users from any Internet connected device. The paper shows how mill management advantageously use wireless PDA's to view what is going on at anytime and from anywhere. It concludes with a summary of how the approach is being used to speed decision-making and capture spot market opportunities.

Fine grinding technology has become extremely important for Mount Isa Mines Limited in the last decade for flowsheet development for the McArthur River deposit and in rejuvenating the Lead-Zinc Concentrator at Mount Isa. Regrinding products with 80 per cent passing seven microns and 12 microns were required, respectively, for the McArthur River ore and the Lead-Zinc Concentrator at Mount Isa. Development of the ISAMILL, a horizontal stirred mill with a gross mill volume of 4000 litres (a net volume of 3000 litres), has been successful in delivering the required grinding product sizes with an energy consumption acceptable to a mining operation. The ISAMILL performance for processing both lead and zinc streams at Mount Isa is discussed in this paper, including the milling energy efficiency, the media wear and the size-by-size recovery data for one flotation process following the fine regrinding stage. The potential use of the ISAMILL technology at various phases of the mining cycle is also discussed.

Getting it right is a very profitable outcome. Shareholders would ideally like to see their directors get it right all the time on the major economic decisions. But it is very difficult for mining directors to get it right all the time in such an uncertain environment. Primary decision-makers of companies with significant stakes in the mining industry should get it right much more frequently. The legal measures of evidence (beyond reasonable doubt and on the balance of probabilities) can be used to determine whether grade estimates (a key revenue variable) are realistic. The application of this approach can be far reaching. More frequently correct decision-making would result in more effective allocation of limited resources (capital and labour). In turn, this would result in higher financial returns and a more extensive mining industry.

Associated with the development of a novel microbiological oxidation process for the conditioning of iron hydroxide slurries from ferrous mine waters, there is a realistic chance to make the contained iron available for a material utilization. The transformation of ferrous into ferric compounds is coupled with the precipitation of iron hydroxisulphate mostly in terms of the mineral Schwert-mannite. The further treatment of the iron hydroxisulphate has to be aimed on the processing for product recovery and product refinement. For many potential applications, e.g. in the ceramic industry, the pigment industry or for metallurgical applications, the removal of sulphate is essential. For the dehydration of the iron hydroxisulphate and the sulphate removal, microwave heating technology is a beneficial method. In contrast to conventional thermal heating processes the supply of energy in microwave application takes place directly within the material through the dissipation of electromagnetic energy, i.e. no heating medium is needed. It is a volumetric heating process regardless of the surface of the material. The rapid and targeted energy supply and the good controllability of microwave heating systems are advantages which have led to a wide variety of applications in industrial processes. Among the diverse use for heating of temperature-sensitive, chemical and pharmaceutical products as well as foodstuffs the number of applications also in mineral and solid processing increases. At the Department for Mechanical Process Engineering and Solids Processing of the Technical University Berlin the use of microwave technology for the treatment of iron hydroxisulphates has been investigated systematically within the framework of a cooperative research project. The paper at hand shows results from material conversion tests subject to a variation of the relevant process parameters. The reaction products are characterized and the process is compared with the conventional heating in a rotary kiln.

Using a mine roof simulator press capable of duplicating the expected magnitude of vertical and horizontal forces experienced by underground mine roof supports, load capabilities of some roof support cribbings were measured. Comparative ultimate vertical support strengths are reported for cribs of old and new timber and nonreinforced and steel-fiber-reinforced (SFR) concrete blocks. In terms of load- bearing capability, cribs of new hickory and nonreinforced concrete blocks have about equal strength, and SFR concrete blocks are three times as strong. Wood aged 2 years underground lost 43 pct of its support strength. These data were obtained during the course of the initial familiarization exercise of the complex press.

The silver-rich cobalt-nickel arsenides ores of the Cobalt area in Ontario, Canada were mined for silver from about 1904 to 1985. The ores contained about 8 oz to 100 oz Aglt and about 1 wt% Ni and 2 wt% Co. They were processed by gravitational techniques, screening and flotation to produce separate silver and Fe-Co-Ni arsenide concentrates. The silver concentrate was smelted, and in some cases the arsenide concentrate was sold to custom smelters which recovered silver and other metals. The ores display a wide variety of textures and contain many minor and trace elements. This paper presents an evaluation of mineral characteristics that have a bearing on extractive metallurgy and smelting of this type of ore.

INTRODUCTION One of the main advantages of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is its adaptability to varying rock conditions. This method is therefore successfully applied when complex geologic features are expected which cause uncertainties in the prognosis of the rock mass behaviour, as was the care at the Arlberg Expressway Tunnel. Furthermore, by employing the NATM problems are avoided when encountering varying geologic conditions or even extension fault zones along the tunnel, as was the case at the Dalaaser Tunnel and Perjen Tunnel. The NATM can also be used for rock and soil. The following examples will show how various rock conditions can be mastered. In accordance with the NATM all tunnels which will be discussed are road tunnels having a cross section area between 70 and 100 m2. The construction consists of a primary support, which ensures stress redistribution during excavation (Figure 1). The primary support is reinforced shotcrete strengthened by steel arches, when necessary, and rock bolts. When encountering rock pressure, swelling rock or soil, the primary support is suplemented by an invert arch. The purpose of the secondary lining is to increase the safety of the tunnel with regard to long-term stress redistribution processes or changes in rock mass properties as well as to protect the insulation. The secondary lining consists of cast concrete without reinforcement and is generally 0.25 or 0.30 m thick.

Perimeter control blasting is common in civil construction projects but not as common in mining. A poorly designed and executed underground mine development blast design can result in unwanted wall rock damage. This damage increases the risk of rock falls and injury. With the availability of good drilling equipment, it is a simple matter to add the few extra holes needed to change conventional drifting into drifting with perimeter control.

The observation method is a design optimization approach for the drill and blast method in tunneling. This method includes first identifying the hazard scenarios through site investigation, formulating suitable solutions, obtaining feedback during construction, and finally using that data to optimize the design methods. This paper illustrates the application of the observational method for T-48, a railway tunnel project in the Himalayas. It is a 10.2 km long tunnel with a parallel escape tunnel and 26 cross passages. The use of observational methods in this project optimized the overall tunnel design and considerably saved the overall project cost.
