National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers conducted an investigation to quantify sound levels and to determine the amount of sound reduction provided by engineering noise controls installed in a talc processing plant. Baseline sound level and sound intensity measurements were performed at the plant and the measurement locations were recorded for comparison to post-control measurements. Follow-up measurements were then made at the same locations after the initial noise controls were installed. The plant subsequently decided to implement additional noise controls and the researchers returned to conduct measurements for a final analysis of all noise controls. The most significant results showed a sound level reduction in the main mill area from a range of 93-104 dB(A) down to 90-94 dB(A), and a total sound power level reduction of 21 dB(A) for air classifying mill 3.

THE 131st meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held in New York on Feb. 16 to 20, 1925, with the largest registration of any previous meeting, the total being 1320 compared to 1276 in 1924. The technical sessions were more largely attended and aroused more discussion than ever before. There were joint meetings with the Mining Section of the National Safety Council, under the auspices of the Industrial Relations Committee of the Institute and two very important lectures, the Howe Memorial Lecture, under the auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee, and the lecture by Dr. Carl Benedicks, of Sweden, on Corrosion, under the auspices of the Institute of Metals Division. The Petroleum Division conducted its annual Symposium on Oil which will be published later in book form. At the annual business meeting on Feb. 17, the following ticket was elected, and the reports of the President, Treasurer, and Secretary 'were presented:

During different activities pile installation like pile boring, concreting etc., it is likely that various problems, depending up on site condition may be encountered. There are possibilities that some of the activities if not correctly followed may affect the pile capacity. This paper describes few problems encountered during pile execution at different sites and presents the remedial measures undertaken to overcome them.

The objectives of this effort were to: 1) Develop and validate start-of-shift operational inspection procedures to be used by operators of mobile, self-propelled equipment used in surface mining operations; 2) Evaluate user acceptance of the developed procedures; and 3) Recommend methods and media for presentation of the developed procedures to the user population. Mobile, self-propelled surface mine equipment requiring start-of-shift inspection was identified. Subsystems amenable to operational inspection were identified. The procedures addressing all safety critical subsystems on each equipment type were then developed and validated. The inspection procedures developed were those that could be performed largely from the operator's station. User acceptance was evaluated during on-site data collection visits to surface mines. Representatives of the user population reviewed the procedures and were then interviewed. Recommendations for the methods and media of presentation to the user population were developed from information obtained in: 1) Review and analysis of instructional technology literature applicable to this area; 2) On-site data collection; and 3) Analysis of the working environment and characteristics of the user population.

Introduction Despite the focus on the so-called "high-tech" and service components of the economy, the minerals industry in 1987 continued to provide the world the overwhelmingly dominant share of the total raw material supply for all manufacturing operations. And, in the form of fertilizers and other soil treatment materials, minerals also supplied indispensable raw materials to ensure continued high production of the agricultural and forestry sectors of the world's economy. Moreover, the role of minerals as a source of construction raw materials was essential to that sector. On the basis of preliminary and partial statistics on world output of crude mineral commodities, 1987 appears to have been a year of further recovery from the recessional years of 1981-1983. The value of world crude mineral industry production (all mineral commodities including fuels) apparently advanced about 5% to nearly $1.1 trillion in terms of constant 1983 dollars.' That is significantly above the recently revised 1986 level of nearly $1.05 trillion, but still considerably below the record-to-date high of $1.27 trillion set in 1980, as shown in Table 1. That growth in value took place despite relatively flat world oil prices - oil being the most important component of the aggregate, as it has been for decades. There is insufficient information available to assess the total value of processed mineral commodities (refined metals, refined oil, manufactured fertilizers and the like). But a figure of $2.6 trillion (constant 1983 dollars) would be a quite conservative estimate for those materials derived only from primary or newly mined materials. And an additional, as-yet-unestimated increment should be added for processed materials derived from secondary raw materials - scrap and other reclaimed substances. From a world trade viewpoint, minerals and mineral products dominate in terms of tonnage. For example, in 1985, on a weight basis, mineral commodities including fuels constituted more than 58% of all goods moving through the Suez Canal and 53% of all goods passing through the Panama Canal. These waterways cannot accommodate giant tankers and ore carriers. So an even larger share of total oceanic trade is composed of minerals and mineral products. Yet, in terms of value, the share of the total accounted for by these industrial essentials is much lower than that accounted for by other commodities, most notably sophisticated high-tech equipment and other goods with a relatively high per-pound value. Worldwide data on the value of mineral export trade for 1987 is so incomplete at this writing that it is impossible to assess that actual level. Indeed, the compilation of similar available data for 1986 covers only the exports of nations with developed market economies. In 1985, these countries accounted for only 67% of total world exports of all goods. They accounted for only 41% of world exports of major mineral commodities: crude nonmetals; metal ores, concentrates, and scrap; mineral fuels; nonferrous metals excluding gold; and iron and steel. For these developed-market-economy countries, the value of exports of these major mineral commodities declined by more than 10% between 1985 and 1986. As part of an investigation aimed at mitigating the hazards caused by abandoned mine openings, the Bureau of Mines conducted a series of electromagnetic surveys in the Galena, KS, area of the Tri-State mining district. The application of monostatic ground-penetrating radar (OPR) and inductive electromagnetic methods for detecting and delineating hazardous mine openings and attendant features was demonstrated to be feasible for shallow mine workings (i.e., less than 35 ft) occurring below flat-lying areas. Accurate determinations of depth to a mine roof appeared to be limited to roughly 20 ft using the GPR method. Features such as mine voids, fractures, and zones of subsidence were located beneath the Mainstreet (State Highway 26) site using the GPR system. Both the GPR and inductive electromagnetic techniques satisfactorily located mine openings and pillars at the Hell's Half Acre site. Geophysical interpretations were supported by exploratory drilling and mine maps.

The kinetics of copper cementation during atmosphere leaching of a Ni-Cu matte in CuSO4-H2SO4 solution was studied as a function of initial copper ion concentration, initial acid concentration, temperature, stirring rate, particle size distribution and pulp density. It was found that all these process variables influenced the rate of cementation. A two-stage rate of reaction was observed inmost of the experiments, with the rate of cementation in the initial stage being slower than that of the subsequent second stage. The increased rate of cementation in the second stage was attributed to the enhancing effect of the surface deposit. The cementation process was found to take place by two different rate-controlling mechanisms. At a temperature range of 50?70°C, an activation energy of 74.6 kJ/mol was obtained, indicating a surface reaction controlled process. At higher temperatures (70?80°C) a lower value of activation energy was observed (18.2 kJ/mol), indicative of a process controlled by diffusion through surface layers. The structural characteristics of the cemented deposit could not be determined in the investigated system where the deposit was mixed with the leach solid residue.

This paper describes highlights of the Placer Dome MiniMole project - the development and testing of a robotic machine for mining narrow ore veins. A prototype hydraulically controlled robotic machine was built and tested. The machine provided a platform for testing numerous cutters in the field. Other cutters, e.g. undercutting devices, were tested in the lab. Extensive analyses were done on specific energies and cutter penetration. Three sets of quarry trials were done, then the machine was tested in an underground mine. Rock UCS values varied from 180 MPa to 230 MPa. The paper includes lessons learned and recommendations based on the project findings.

Cardox blasting is used widely in coal mines in the United States . A model of a Cardox blasting device was approved by the Bureau of Mines subject to certain conditions and limitations , and the approval was extended to other models from time to time . Certain special hazards are entailed in the use of Cardox as with explosives . One of these is flying shells . In some blasts , the Cardox shell is violently ejected from the borehole and flies like a projectile , frequently ricocheting off solid objects and striking points considerably off the line of its initial flight . Flying shells have been known to pierce the webs of structural - steel beams , to pass through both sides of allsteel mine cars , to be driven through stout hardwood timbers , to knock out timber sets , to damage loading equipment , and to break or short - circuit power lines . A considerable number of shot - firers and other workers have been struck by flying shells and killed or injured . Accidents from this cause , although not as frequent as other types of mine accidents , are usually serious , closely approximating accidents caused by blasting with ordinary explosives . The increasing number of such accidents prompted a Bureau of Mines field investigation of possible methods of preventing dangerously violent ejections of Cardox devices . This report contains pertinent data collected during the investigation and describes methods tested and discarded as well as the development and proof of an apparently satisfactory method .

The thrust of this Bureau of Mines report is to relate the size of automobiles to the price of gasoline, and the use of minerals in automobile manufacture to the size of automobiles. Only one of the many plausible scenarios of public reaction to higher gasoline prices, a switch to economy size automobiles, is developed. No account is taken of other potential impacts such as improvements in public transportation or increased occupancy per vehicle. Furthermore, a gasoline price increase is the only incentive to the greater utilization of economy cars that is considered. A gasoline price increase to $0.60 per gallon would reduce the amount of minerals required to produce the automobiles sold in the United States by an estimated 15 percent. Gasoline prices of $0.80 and $1 per gallon would cause declines in mineral requirements for U.S. automobile sales estimated at 26 percent and 35 percent, respectively.

Sublevel caving operation relies on the estimation of ore grade at drawpoints, as the mine management uses grade to decide whether the material at a certain ring should be loaded or abandoned. Grade is estimated in various ways, including visual estimation, density-based calculation, and sampling and assay methods. The grade estimation at the world’s two largest underground iron ore mines owned by LKAB in northern Sweden is based on the density difference between ore and waste. The calculations assume a constant swell factor, a theoretical fill of 100%, and a linear relationship between bucket weight and material grade. This study evaluated these assumptions in detail based on the loading data for 12,237 buckets and concluded that the method has some shortcomings which render the assumptions invalid. Further research is required to deal with these shortcomings to improve estimation of the material grade.

The HILTI OneStep rockbolt was implemented for roadway development in German deep coal mines in 2004. The development by HILTI Company is based on a technical joint venture with RAG Deutsche Steinkohle AG. The technical development of a One-Step bolting system was required for weak strata conditions at the roadway development face. Standard resin bolting has reached the limit of performance when boreholes are squeezed and cannot be filled with capsules. In some cases the heading face is brittle and requires additional support for installation of the bolts and a person working immediately next to the borehole. The Hilti One-Step system allows automated and safe processing at the heading front and provides the key technique to avoid these problems.

The method of chloride-hypochlorite leaching has the advantages of short process, low pollution and higher in reaction rate compared with the traditional leaching method. In this research, NaCl - NaClO solution is used to leaching gold from a refractory gold concentrate, and the influence of NaCl and NaClO concentration, reaction time to the leaching rate were investigated in this experiment. The raw materials and the leaching residue were characterized by a series of analysis methods such as XRD, XRF, SEM and EDS. Results indicate that the leaching rate and the desulfurization rate can be achieved at 96.26% and 98% with most optimum conditions as follows: NaCl concentration 50g/L, NaClO concentration 200g/L, Liquid-solid ratio 10:1, the best reaction time was 150 mins. And these conditions should be guaranteed pH<8.0, ORP>900mV.

In the present study the reductive behavior of dust from the rotary kilns (RK), in ferronickel production from nickeliferous Greek laterites, is investigated. The study concerns dust of various origins (washing towers, electrostatic filters, polycyclones) and pellets made from the dust. Reducibility was studied in the temperature range of 700 °C to 850 °C in a laboratory tube furnace. Experimental results showed that reduction degree increases with temperature up to about 800 °C. The rate of reduction is great during the first minutes, giving a reduction degree R% equal to about 25%, in only a few minutes. After this, the rate is decreasing until it diminishes to zero after about 10-20 minutes of reaction. Maximum reduction degree achieved is 26 to 28%. This paper is based on a project conducted at Khomanani 2 shaft, Anglo American Platinum Limited. The main objective was to find an alternative support element in stopes to address the falls of ground (FOG) problem experienced at this shaft. Literature review was the major method used in the investigations. Resin bolts or any 1.5 m in-stope roofbolts were considered. The shaft was making use of 0.9 m long friction bolts, and these could not prevent the FOG experienced. Observations indicated that the FOG resulted in fall-out thicknesses averaging to 1.1 m, which is greater than the supported length of the friction bolts. The implementation of 1.5 m long bolts was recommended as a result of the project. These bolts will be able to address the fall-out thickness and provide sufficient support resistance to mitigate FOG. The chosen support element will result in a relatively small increase in support costs.

REAM is a unique method of rock breaking using high energy projectile impact. This report-describes the most recent in a series of tests demonstrating mining applications for the REAM method. In an underground limestone mine at Greer, West Virginia, REAM was used to drive a short tunnel and drill a large diameter borehole. Along with breakage data from these tests the goal of the program was to examine environmental problems which might result from the use of cannons under-ground. A total of 103 shots was used to advance a 14-l/2-feet high by 10-feet-wide face a distance of 5-1/2 feet. It is estimated that the 9.3-pound-concrete projectiles launched at 5000 feet per second will break an average of 0.78 tons of limestone or 67 percent of the 1.125 tons of granodiorite broken in previous tests. The 9-inch-diameter borehole was drilled horizontally by repeated axial impact for 7 feet, 2-1/2 inches by 21 shots giving an average of 4.12 inches per shot. Scaling this result to compressible impact energy yields an estimated 5.8 inches per shot for a 12.8-inch-diameter hole compared to 8 inches per ~hot for a 16-inch-diameter hole in granodiorite. Noise measurements indicate that a silenced cannon can be used within a few hundred feet of mine personnel in a room and pillar mine within the legal limit of 140 dB impulse without additional protection. Some fume measurements were made with satisfactory results, even though the military propellants used produce much greater quantities of toxic fumes than the liquid propellant proposed for the future.

Keywords: Kyoto Protocol, carbon credits, global warming, energy, auditing Climate change is nowadays being taken increasingly seriously, and the link between global warming and the carbon dioxide released in the generation of energy is coming under increasing scrutiny. The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997, after five years of negotiation. So far, about 84 countries have ratified this agreement, under which terms developed countries have strict targets linked to their 1990 level of emissions. However, ?greenhouse gas? (such as carbon dioxide) emissions continue to rise alarmingly. According to the World Resources Institute, greenhouse gas emissions in the USA increased 13% from 1990-2002, while Australia recorded a 22% increase. In contrast, the European Union, a Kyoto signatory, has seen a small decline in its emissions during the same period. This is led by the UK and Germany, who reduced their emissions by 15% and 19% respectively. The concept of ?carbon credits? provides a funding mechanism for companies in the developed world to compensate for some of their CO2 emissions by paying companies (trading credits) elsewhere in the world to undertake projects to bring about reductions in emissions. In the southern African mining industry, it will be possible to get refunded for undertaking voluntary emission-reduction projects. Concern about the environment is creating business opportunities. A preliminary calculation has shown that various projects in South Africa (those in the pipeline, with quite a high likelihood of coming off) could earn a combined total of about R2.5-billion, under the initial phase of the Kyoto Protocol&apos;s carbon-credit scheme, which allows developed-country companies to trade credits with developing countries. A number of local companies are planning projects that could comply with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), in which they will implement techniques to achieve certified emission reductions (CERs) of greenhouse gases. In order to prevent abuse of such a system involving vast sums of money, vigorous audits need to be carried out. A company has to prove it has made real changes and is not simply conducting business as usual under a cloak of claimed environmental improvements. PricewaterhouseCoopers has applied to become one of only a few international agencies that will be accredited to conduct validation and verification of the credits, by auditing what is called the ?designated operational entity?. An independent validator needs to confirm that the project meets the strict requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. The company has to demonstrate that it?s not business as usual. So, if you refurbished every five years, the next refurbishment is not a good CDM project, unless you can demonstrate that you will do something beyond the maintenance - that is what can be registered. So, Kyoto intends to get additional projects going, and the money for that is actually quite good - prices of 14 euros per ton of carbon dioxide not emitted have been seen. The price depends on who takes the risk for non-delivery if a project doesn?t deliver the emission reductions on time. The highly energy-intensive South African mining industry is heavily dependent on coal. There should be many opportunities for the pyrometallurgical industry to come up with creative ideas to reduce emissions, and there is now an additional financial incentive to encourage this. Companies can actually get money in return for doing these types of projects, in addition to the contribution to corporate social responsibility.
