The purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to describe the methods and establish the basic economics for dragline, shovel-truck, and scraper mining systems. An overall view of the techniques of preliminary design and the cost involved is presented. Considerations of equipment selection, emphasizing short-range evaluation of required equipment, and a long-range evaluation are considered at a constant production rate over the life of a hypothetical mine. Separate cost analyses for each system were based on 1977 equipment prices, prevailing wage rates, and associated mining costs. Specific engineering and cost breakdown for such items as access roads, transmission line installation, rail spurs, etc., are beyond the scope of this report.

On 16 July 2004, at 07:10 a collapse of about 1.8 million m3 (about 4 ½ million tons) took place on the north wall on Nchanga Open Pit. This collapse was the result of a developing instability that was first identified when the benches in this area were exposed during September 2002. The NOP geotechnical and survey departments closely monitored the development of the failure. Control measures were implemented to reduce risk to men and equipment. These measures were continually improved and adjusted in reaction to observations and changing conditions. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail the monitoring results that were obtained both by traditional methods and the novel slope stability radar system (SSR). Difficulties encountered in establishing critical deformation levels and deformation rates that can be used to predict the onset of collapse are described. Details of the monitoring and control measures, which led to the successful completion of mining in the area, are also described in this paper.

In an underground mine operated with panel caving and subjected to high stresses, geotechnical events such as collapses or rock bursts are fairly recurrent. Both situations can involve risks for people, considerable production losses and increasing operational costs.This paper discusses an operational methodology for the recovery of the undercutting front carried out at El Teniente mine, which uses panel cave mining with post-undercutting, after the occurrence of severe damage due to a seismic cluster. The main objective of the recovery of the undercutting front is to prevent the spread of the collapse to the production level, risking the operational continuity. The methodology is the result of repairs that were carried out in the year 2014 at the North Reserves sector from El Teniente mine. Its characteristics are an undercutting front of almost 1000 m long, with the presence of relevant structures and faults, high stresses and high seismic activity.The practical implementation of the proposed methodology was successful since it prevented the spread of the damage, completely recovered the undercutting front and avoided production losses during the execution of the repairs. Also, considering the origin of the damage and the operations associated to the subsequent recovery of the undercutting front, in this paper we discuss the main control variables to be measured. These variables should allow any operator and short-term planner to take action in mines operated with conventional panel caving in a complex geotechnical environment.CITATION:Rivera, N, Music, A and Cisternas, C, 2016. In recent years many creative technologies are applied to SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators. SLon-2500 and SLon-3000 vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are created towards larger scale. Through optimizing the magnetic system and lowering the electric current density, their energy consumption is obviously dropped. New magnetic matrixes are developed to raise the beneficial efficiency of valuable minerals. Special SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are developed which can treat coarser particles of 0-5 mm. Through these technology creations, the mineral processing efficiency of SLon magnetic separators is further raised and their processing cost dropped. Therefore, they have been found wider applications. SLon-2500 applied in Essar Steel of India. In 2007, Essar Steel did a test on its Kirandul hematite ore with SLon magnetic separator and got very good results. The feed grade is 59.77%Fe, after SLon one roughing and one scavenging, the total iron concentrate grade is 65.00%Fe and iron recovery 93.86%. In 2008-2010, the company bought 10 SLon-2500 magnetic separators to treat such iron ores. In 2010 the first SLon-3000 was applied to processing ilmenite. The magnetite-ilmenite deposit is located in Pan Zhi Hua, Si Chuan Province of China. The ore processing flow sheet is: Drum low intensity magnetic separator is used to take out magnetite, and then the SLon-3000 is used to recover ilmenite for roughing. The mags of the SLon-3000 are further cleaned by flotation. The SLon-3000 average operational results are: feed grade 9.52%TiO2, mags grade 17.43%TiO2, mags mass ratio 41.01%, TiO2 recovery 75.09%, non-mags grade 4.02% TiO2, non-mags mass ratio 58.99%. SLon magnetic separators Applied to treat 0-5mm limonite: The feed of SLon magnetic separator is usually 0-2 mm which needs to be ground by ball mill. As many Chinese iron ores are poor grades, if we can throw part of tails before grinding, the grinding cost will be greatly reduced. In 2010, a SLon-1500 and a SLon-2000 were specially built to treat 0-5 mm limonite. The feed grade is 26.51%Fe, mags grade 53.20%Fe, iron recovery 64.26, and tails grade 13.66% Fe. SLon-2500 applied to purify quartz. In 2009, a SLon-2500 magnetic separator was applied to purify quartz in Shan Xi province. Its feed is 0-1mm quartz which contains 0.15%-0.25%Fe2O3, the designed non-mags grade need to be less 0.08% Fe2O3. The production results of SLon-2500 non-mags are 0.05-0.06% Fe2O3, much better than the designed data. SLon applied in Si Jia Ying Iron Mine to recover hematite. Si Jia Ying is a big oxidized iron mine located in He Bei Province of China. In 2005-2010, a plant annually treating 10 million tons of oxidized iron ore was built in which 39 SLon magnetic separators are applied. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 30.44%Fe, iron concentrate grade 66%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 9.65Fe%. SLon applied to recover specularite. Li Lou Iron Mine in An Hui Province of China built a plant annually processing 5 million tons of iron ore in 2010-2011. 25 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover specularite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 31.65%Fe, iron concentrate grade 65%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 10.37%Fe. SLon applied in Da Hong Shan Iron Mine. Da Hong Shan Iron Mine is located in Yun Nan province of China. It treats 4.5 million tons of oxidized iron ore annually. 15 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover hematite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 35.61%Fe, iron concentrate grade 64.95%Fe, iron recovery 74.08%Fe, tails grade 15.55%. Este proceso concluye con una recopilación de documentos fiables y totalmente óptimos para el desarrollo de las funciones de mantenimiento. Su uso correcto en la evaluación de los requisitos de mantenimiento de los equipos existentes, genera un mantenimiento menos costoso, confiable y eficaz. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Two 2 in-diameter 6x25 fiber core (FC) ropes were degraded on a bending fatigue machine. These were the second and third ropes in a series of tests on this construction and size rope. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope Lo determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that once a wire rope nears the end of its service life, both deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength begin to increase at an accelerated rate.

With unprecedented worldwide growth and increasing global demand for energy expected to swell by 60 per-cent in the next two decades, mining matters as much now, if not more, than it ever has. This was the consensus at the 110th Annual National Western Mining Conference presented by the Colorado Mining Association, Feb. 12-14 at the Westin Hotel in Denver, CO. The role of coal ? America?s most abundant energy source ? the future of uranium and its possible resurgence in the energy marketplace, the skyrocketing value of gold as well as the issues of health, safety, climate change, legislation and government?s role in mining were all discussed during the three-day conference that operated under the banner of ?Mining Matters.? Barbara Filas, chairperson of the 110th National Western Mining Conference, president of Knight Piesold Co. and former SME president, welcomed the record crowd with an inspiring speech in which she pointed out that although ?most normal folks don?t know what role mining plays in their everyday life, mining does matter. ?Our industry,? she said, ?matters to Colorado. It matters to Colorado because it is a $3-billion industry. It matters to the 13,000 people who are employed directly or indirectly by the industry and it matters to schools that receive more than half of the royalties that are generated by mining.? During discussions of mining?s place in Colorado, the western United States and the world, special attention was paid to coal, uranium and the future of energy. ?It is time to rethink our perceptions about coal,? said Mark A. Smith, president and chief executive officer of Chevron Mining Inc. He spoke during the opening reception in a presentation titled, ?Coal to Liquids: Bridging America?s Energy Gap.? Although coal is America?s most abundant, and cheapest energy source, it is also one of the most scrutinized because of the pollution it causes and recent, and heavily publicized, tragedies that have claimed the lives of some who mine it.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines formed a team in 1991 to begin developing a long-range research plan for computer-assisted mining that would benefit the metal-nonmetal mining industry. This report details the team's accomplishments, specifically, the development of a model that identifies metal-nonmetal mining research needs that could be addressed by the application of automation technology. The report also provides a summary of automation needs and applications based on visits with mining company representatives. The status and future direction of this work is also presented.

The utilization of high sulfur Illinois coal by utility plants has been decreasing since the enactment of 1990 Clean Coal Air Act Amendment. Illinois coal producers can make their coal saleable by offering the choice of taking the combustion by-products from the utility plants and placing them in the abandoned sections of their mines. To be competitive, however, coal producers need to select an environmentally acceptable transportation-handling-placement system through which the cost-per-ton of by-product disposed can be minimized. In this paper, a few such systems are presented. The favorable operating range of each system is determined in terms of distance and tonnage. A case study is given whereby cost analysis is conducted for an underground coal mine receiving by-products from two Illinois utility plants.

En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la aplicación de un modelo matemático para comprender, manejar y optimizar las diferentes variables que afectan al proceso del tratamiento. El modelo está basado en los fenómenos de transporte de solución a través de la pila y la cinética de cianuración de los metales contenidos en el mineral, el cual permitirá simular los cambios en los parámetros operacionales y metalúrgicos como diferentes tipos de mineral, flujos entre plantas Merrill Crowe y CIC, un mejor tratamiento de excesos de agua para minimizar su efecto en la producción de oro y el manejo óptimo de soluciones y predicciones a futuro de producción de oro.

Dado que la concentración de sulfuros de fierro: pirita y pirrotita aplicados gravimétricamente en espirales Humphreys obtuvo resultados óptimos tanto en lo económico como en lo metalúrgico, surge la necesidad de construir una planta concentradora de sulfuros de hierro en la Cerro de Pasco Corporation utilizando como cabeza los relaves de la planta de flotación de minerales de cobre. En este sentido, el objetivo del texto describe el proceso de dicha concentración, donde señala que la alimentación a la nueva planta es una pulpa que requiere mantenimiento de supervisión y mantenimiento, generando un concentrado de fierro a un costo de s/.6. 00 T. C. S. contra s/. 105. 00 T. C. S.; costo del concentrado de fierro producido por flotación en 1961. Asimismo, las diferencias de gravedad específica entre sulfuros de fierro y ganga cuarcífera han ido aprovechados para lograr un ejemplo donde la concentración gravimétrica, actúa con éxito frente al actualmente difundido proceso de concentración por flotación.

The use of uranium metal in non-ferrous metallurgical practice is dis-cussed with reference to its alloying behaviour and chemical activity. It is suggested that the more promising applications are in the treatment of molten metals to combine with impurities. Mines Branch work along these lines is described for copper, zinc, magnesium, aluminum and nickel alloys. It is shown that a cop-per-uranium master alloy (25 per cent U) successfully deoxidizes molten copper without detriment to the electrical or mechanical properties of the product at residual uranium levels of up to 0.8 wt. per cent. Additions of uranium to alpha brass in amounts greater than the lead impurity content were found to remove the deleterious effect of lead on hot-workability. Similar deoxidizing and malleableizing effects were found with uranium additions to nickel. It is thought that uranium forms stable intermetallic compounds with many impurity elements. A significant malleableizing effect can therefore be expected in the presence of other elements besides lead.

Vale Inco Ltd. is trialing several energy conservation initiatives in an effort to minimize costs and reduce green house gas emissions. The Ventilation on Demand (VOD) concept is a major project being carried out in various phases at Vale Inco mines. Due to the complex nature of a dynamic VOD system, Vale Inco is taking a systematic approach of testing VOD system components with milestone evaluations of each project. Coleman Mine was selected to pilot test the functionality and robustness of automated louvers in the underground environment; with the goal of optimizing mine airflow such that ventilation would be available for developing a new ore body. This project involved installing automated louvers in the exhaust raises; and installing variable frequency drive (VFD) starters on auxiliary supply fans. Because the VOD project created efficient utilization of the ventilation air in the 153 OB, the 170 OB is currently being developed without increasing the total fresh air into the mine. This paper describes the louver system component of VOD as applied at the mine.

Falls of Ground is one of the highest causes of incidents, accidents and fatal injuries in our mines today. These falls of ground may occur as soon as the face is exposed after blasting or after machine cutting. The falls of ground can also occur after support has been installed. There are many reasons why these falls occur before and after supporting of the face. It is therefore important to support the exposed face as soon as possible to prevent the falls of ground. It is also very important to support the face with the correct support products and to support the face as designed and required by the mining engineers. The possible reasons for falls of ground, possible support methods and the products available will be discussed in this presentation. In typical conventional narrow vein stoping operations, the use of conventional temporary support components to offer some support to workers, whilst the permanent and generally more elaborate support system gets installed or constructed, still results in injuries to people. Many copper processing flowsheets in the Democratic Republic of Congo include the leaching of oxide ores containing copper and cobalt, copper solvent extraction, copper electrowinning, and precipitation of cobalt salt. Recently, cobalt price gained momentum, driven mostly by the fast-growing electric vehicles battery market. The ore blending scenarios tend to prioritise high cobalt grade ore, whatever the content of copper and other impurities. Therefore, many copper solvent extraction circuits are running below design capacity. The variability of feed induces a variability of the leach solution with respect to copper, manganese, and silica contents. It is thus important to adjust hydrodynamic and metallurgical parameters of the solvent extraction plant to optimise metallurgical performance, production cost, and the quality of the copper electrolyte. This paper presents some results on how solvent extraction plant parameters have been managed in two solvent extraction plants running with lower than designed copper input. INTRODUCTION Referring to a report of the chamber of commerce of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) the online publication Agence Ecofin (2019) indicated that the DRC ranks in the fifth position of the world top copper producing countries with over 1.2 million tons produced in 2018. The same year, 66% of the world’s cobalt was produced in the DRC at over 106,000 tons. If the political situation remained stable and the new tax regime introduced in 2018 did not deter private investors, copper production could reach 1.4 million tons/a in 2020 as pointed out in Mining.com (2019). Forecast figures for DRC cobalt production vary widely depending on analysts. The DRC online magazine Actualité.cd (2018) referring to a ministerial source forecasts over 141,000 t cobalt/a for 2020. The reality will depend on many factors, including the selling price, the supply compared to the demand, and finally the reaction of investors to the new DRC tax regime. The growing electric vehicle batteries market has been the major key driver of the price of cobalt. The five years historical cobalt price graph in figure 1 from infomine.com (2019) shows that the price of cobalt peaked at over 40 USD/lb in the first quarter of 2018. Cited by the online Magazine Creamer Media, Smith (2019) has indicated that the long-term demand of cobalt will likely remain strong.

The problem of ventilating an advancing drive which finally reached 5,550 ft from the fresh air base in rock with virgin temperature of 83°F was solved economically by the use of two 15 h.p. electric fans forcing ventilating air through 281/2 in. dia. fiexible polythene tubing of wall thickness 0·010 in. The saving in cost over conventional metal duct was estimated to be £3· 24 per ft of drive.INTRODUCTIONAs described by Dutton (1965) and Newton (1965) the existing 1,480' ft level drive at the South Mine, Broken Hill, was extended in two stages. The first extension was 3,790 ft, the face then being 4,790 ft from the fresh air inlet. Later, after a vertical ventilation connection was made 1,000 ft back from the face, the drive was extended a further 4,550 ft. The rate of face advance in both stages was about 15 ft per day (3 shifts of 5 ft), 5 days per week. Drive size was 8 ft by 9 ft 6 in. high.The Mines Inspection Act of New South Wales requires 6 hr shifts (instead of the normal 7 in Broken Hill) to be worked if the wet bulb temperature exceeds 80°F. Virgin rock temperature on the 1,480 ft level was 83°F. Inlet air temperature varied with seasons from 58 to 72,oF wet bulb.To adequately ventilate the face, a flow of air of about 11,000 c.f.m. was thought to be necessary.Re-entry time was about 75 min, being governed by the 7 hr length of shift (3 shifts per day) and travelling time.Blasting was permitted only at the end of the shift, in accordance with local industrial restrictions.

An experimental study of the soil mechanics of brown coal showed that brown coal consolidates in the same manner as does a clay and that the theory of consolidation for soils may be applied to brown coals. Moisture content is a function of the coal type, the existing effective stress, and the stress history of the coal.The effective stress in a brown coal seam is a function of the overburden pressure, the pore stress and tectonic stresses. Stress history may be deduced from geological evidence and determined by consolidation tests. Application of these principles to the brown coal seams of the Latrobe Valley shows that the distributions of natural moisture contents are consistent with consolidation.INTRODUCTIONThe nature and geology of the brown coals of Victoria, particularly of the Latrobe Valley, were discussed in some detail by Edwards (1945, 1948), Thomas and Baragwanath (1949) and Gloe (1960). A salient feature of these studies was the distribution of moisture contents in the brown coal seams. Recent experimental work, part of a soil mechanics study of the structure and strength of brown coal, showed that moisture content variation is a reflection of consolidation phenomena in brown coal and application of the results to .field condItions verified and modified the conclusions of Edwards in his pioneer work. Current dynamic testing practice to obtain pile total capacity will not yield optimum capacity due to the strain incompatibility between the side and tip resistances during driving. Superposition of end of initial drive- static tip capacity and the peak static skin capacity during beginning of restrike and adding them is the preferred method. The FDOT method determines independent pile static tip and skin capacities in real time analyzing appropriate blows from the embedded tip and top data of the Embedded Data Collectors (EDC). This data is collected through a wireless radio transmitter, receiver, and laptop software. The approach utilizes EDC tip and top data and nonlinear single degree of freedom system to satisfy force and energy equilibrium with a global genetic inversion analysis. Top impacted energy equals at pile tip as sum of Static, Damping and Inertial energy providing independent tip resistance. With EDC sensors as boundary conditions, pile is divided into desired segments and using global inversion techniques one dimensional equation is solved for independent skin friction for every blow. EDC data compared close static load test results. The EDC - FDOT method has enabled cost effective 100% testing of driven piles cost effective. INTRODUCTION Historical documentation has shown that not only driven piles have a long history of usage but also continues to advance unceasingly till today. Historians placed the first pile driving using timber piles in the 4th century BC. While modern pile driving systematically started around nineteenth century, the credit for conceiving the idea of the applicability of wave equation to driven piles goes to David Victor Isaccs of Australia. His 1931publication “Concrete Pile Driving Formulae” provides the basis for modern pile driving using stress wave theory. He felt that the dynamic formulae then in use lacked the capability of detecting integrity and hence developed stress wave theory. This work was further developed starting in 1938 by W.H. Glanville and colleagues of British Building Research Board as they developed the first solution to the wave equation. But these early efforts have really taken off only with the advent of computers. E.A.L. Smith (1960) published ‘Pile Driving Analysis with the Wave Equation’ and provided first numerical solution to the wave equation. Within few years, the FHWA funded research and in due course this effort ushered the era of externally instrumented pile driving.
