Mechanical data from a rockbolt drilling machine, such as torque, thrust, revolution and stroke, are useful for understanding the geological and geomechanical conditions around roadways and hence selecting the optimum bolt type and density. Laboratory experiments showed that the level of torque or thrust reflects differences in rock type, with separation of strata and cracks appearing as a specific pattern. Algorithms of neural networks based on adaptive resonance theory and back-propagation were used to extract the pattern and estimate the location of discontinuities. For field testing in an underground coal mine, a prototype data acquisition system was attached to a portable drilling machine. Several sets of logging data from one locality were combined to construct a two-dimensional model of the strata, from which the slope angles of discontinuity faces could be estimated

This report describes a study designed to evaluate a pro-posed modification in the cap lamp battery cord intented to reduce the incidence of snagging and catching of the cord. A three phase evaluation was performed comparing a prototype with the standard, currently available cord. First, a ?pull test? equipment was run. The second evaluation was a body conformity study. The third evaluation involved subjects performing common tasks in a low seam coal mine simulator. The results of these evaluations clearly demonstrated significant safety advantages of incorporating coiled cord into the design of the cap cord. The coil cord presented less of a snagging hazard, allowed the wearer more time to respond to a snag, and transmitted lower levels of force to the helmet when snagged. The research team recommended that cap lamp cords be commercially developed which incorporate coiled cord at the battery and helmet.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale experiments to determine whether or not surface waters with a high organic content could be purified sufficiently to be used to replace the natural high-quality deep well water currently being used in the silica flotation step of phosphate rock beneficiation. Waters abundant in organic matter were collected from two central Florida streams, flocculated with a cationic polyethylenimine polymer, and processed in a sand filter. This treatment removed most of the organic materials from the water. Untreated surface water, treated surface water, and distilled water were used to compare the flotation response of the acid insolubles in an amine flotation circuit. Surface water treated with PEI-1000 was shown to be as effective as distilled water for the acid-insoluble-flotation step. Flocculation and filtration can therefore produce water suitable for amine flotation of quartz, which would permit substitution of surface water for deep well water.

To simulate brittle rocks, a mixture of glastone, sand and water was used as a model material. Thin galvanized sheets were used to create joints in blocks made out of the model material. To investigate the failure modes and strength, both the intact material blocks as well as jointed model material blocks of size 35.6 × 17.8 × 2.5 cm having different joint geometry configurations were subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compressive loadings. Results obtained from the intact model material blocks are used to validate a new intact rock failure criterion for biaxial loading. Results obtained from both the intact and jointed model material blocks are used to develop a strongly non-linear new rock mass failure criterion for biaxial loading. In this failure criterion, the fracture tensor component is used to incorporate the directional effect of fracture geometry system on jointed block strength. The failure criterion shows the important role the intermediate principal stress plays on rock mass strength. Es wurde das Versagensverhalten und die Festigkeit von intakten Blöcken sowie durchtrennten Blöcken mit unterschiedlicher Trennflächengeometrie untersucht. Aus den Ergebnissen der Versuche an intaktem Material wurde ein neues Versagenskriterium für biaxiale Belastungen validiert. Die Ergebnisse der Versuche an intakten und durchtrennten Blöcken wurden verwendet, um ein neues stark nicht-lineares Versagenskriterium für geklüftetes Gebirge unter biaxialer Belastung abzuleiten. Darin wird der Bruchtensor verwendet, um den Einfluss der Trennflächengeometrie auf die Festigkeit zu erfassen. Das Versagenskriterium stellt heraus, welche Bedeutung die mittlere Hauptspannung für die Gebirgsfestigkeit hat. Un mélange de platre dentaire, de sable et d’eau a été utilisé pour développer un matériau analogue des roches fragiles. De fines feuilles galvanisées permettent de créer des discontinuités représentatives des discontinuités naturelles dans des bloques fabriqués avec ce matériau analogue. Les modes de rupture et la résistance, tant pour le matériau intact que pour le matériau avec ses discontinuités, ont été étudiés sur des blocs de 35.6 × 17.8 × 2.5 cm soumis à des efforts de compression uniaxiaux et biaxiaux. Différentes configurations de géométrie de discontinuités ont été considérées. Les résultats obtenus à partir des blocs intacts permettent de vérifier un nouveau critère de rupture pour les roches intactes soumises à des efforts biaxiaux. Les résultats obtenus, tant avec les blocs intacts qu’avec les blocs avec discontinuités, sont utilisés pour développer un nouveau critère de rupture, fortement non linéaire, pour les massifs rocheux soumis à des chargements biaxiaux. Dans ce critère de rupture, un tenseur de fractures est introduit pour caractériser les effets directionnels de la géométrie des systèmes de discontinuité sur la résistance des blocs avec discontinuités. Ce critère de rupture démontre le rôle important de la contrainte principale intermédiaire sur la résistance des massifs rocheux.

A method of stability analysis of underground opening by the limiting equilibrium approach is presented. The Coulomb shear failure criterion is employed to find possible fracture surfaces and to evaluate the shear strengths along them. The normal stresses required for the calculation of shear strength, and the shear stresses for the calculation of total shear force along the fracture surfaces, are obtained by the finite-element method of plane-strain analysis. The factor of safety against Coulomb shear failure is calculated as the ratio of the shear strength to the shear force along a fracture surface, similar to the practice in slope stability analysis. Four shapes of openings are analyzed, with three ratios of horizontal lithostatic stress and four coefficients of internal friction. The critical fracture surfaces found by this method of analysis are consistent with the arching of roofs and slabbing of ribs commonly observed.

The Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) is a joint venture between Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited and Royal Bafokeng Resources (Pty) Ltd (Bafokeng). The mining lease has been granted over Boschkoppie 104JQ and is located approximately 10 km south of the Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex. The Merensky Reef, which constitutes the principal orebody, is geologically complex. A relationship between its geological variability and the associated mineralization has been established by defining a number of facies types. The Merensky Reef has been subdivided into seven distinct facies types: the pegmatoidal facies, contact facies, FW1 potholefacies, FW3 pothole facies, FW6 pothole facies, and FW7 pothole facies. The Merensky Reef, which does not form part of the potholed reef, has a large component of footwall mineralization. The pothole facies, in contrast, has mineralization located in the hangingwall. Statistical analysis of the facies types indicates that they are unique populations and hence need to be evaluated independently. The mining lease has distinct structural domains that have added additional complications to evaluation of the Merensky Reef. The Merensky facies on BRPM exhibit unique geological and statistical characteristics within well-defined structural blocks. Due to the extreme variability of the Merensky Reef on BRPM a unique approach has been developed, within Anglo Platinum, to evaluate the deposit. Mining cuts are defined and composited for the individual facies types, and then modelled individually by applying known geological controls. The resultant grade models are weighted based on statistical and local geological knowledge. The object of weighting the facies is to replicate the variability observed in the orebody. The introduction of stringent geological controls to the evaluation process has resulted in increased confidence in the in situ grades estimated as an input to the mine planning process.

Feed slurries are typically flocculated in a thickenerÆs feedwell to increase the settling rate, underflow density and overflow clarity. High molecular weight polymeric flocculants are normally used, but present a number of challenges in terms of make up, dilution, delivery and mixing with the feed slurry.Various aspects of the flocculant dilution and delivery system have been studied with a combination of flow visualisation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). An open topped flocculant dilution/mixing box has been developed to replace a conventional flocculant manifold, with improvements to the mixing, fault diagnosis and ease of determining the flow split to the various dosing points. The addition points to the feedwell have also been studied, both in terms of where the flocculant is added, and how. While conventional multi-hole spargers are effective in dispersing flocculant, they are prone to blocking and have been replaced by open-ended pipes. The required dispersion is provided by an efficient mixing element placed in the dilution port. Adding the flocculant into the feedwell dilution stream prior to mixing with the slurry also provides super-dilution of the flocculant that can further improve the flocculation process and reduce flocculant consumption.CITATION:Heath, A R and Arbuthnot, I, 2013. This paper presents the results of a study using computer human modeling to examine machine appendage speed. The objective was to determine the impact of roof bolter machine appendage speed on the likelihood of the operator coming in contact with. A contact means two or more objects intersecting or touching each other, e.g., appendage makes contact with the operator?s hand, arm, head or leg. Incident investigation reports do not usually contain enough information to aid in studying this problem and laboratory experiments with human subjects are also not feasible because of safety and ethical issues. As an alternative, researchers developed a computer model approach as the primary means to gather data. By simulating an operator?s random behavior and machine?s appendage velocity, researchers can study potential hazards of tasks where it is not possible to perform experiments with human subjects. Analysis information is helpful to the mining industry in terms of making recommendations that reduce the likelihood that roof-bolter operators experience injury due to contact with a moving boom. Data analysis of roof bolter simulations show that the virtual-operator?s response time has little effect on the number of contacts experienced. Based on frequency and cross-tabulation, regardless of other variables, contact incidents were always greater when the boom was moving up, were always greater on the palm, and were always greater for the boom part of the machine. Also, regardless of boom speed, the 25th-percentile-sized operators experienced more contacts than did other operator sizes. Furthermore, regardless of boom speed, the 152-cm mine seam experienced more contacts than did other seam heights tested. Results of a survival analytic approach suggest that controlling the boom speed is the most important factor in determining the risk of an operator making contact. Based on the data collected, boom speed greater than 41 cm/s results in a substantial increase in risk to the roof bolter operator and should probably be avoided. At speeds less than or equal to 25 cm/s are associated with a more modest relative risk, which represents an acceptable level of risk. Also, at speeds between 25 and 41 cm/s, there could be a particular boom speed in this range at which a significant inflection point in the relative risk estimates occurs. Based on the results, this issue needs to be addressed by future research.

"In an environment of rising energy prices and mining at greater depths, cost-efficient loading and hauling equipment is essential. Conducted at an underground mining operation, this study analyzes the energy consumption and gas emissions of diesel and electric load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) with similar bucket capacities. Based on energy prices from the first quarter of 2014, results of discrete event simulation show that energy costs for diesel and electric LHDs are US$0.24/t and US$0.07/t, respectively. Also, diesel LHDs emit 2.68 kg CO2 per litre of diesel fuel, whereas using electric machines reduces the need for ventilation to mitigate engine heat and emissions and reduces energy costs.RÉSUMÉ Dans un contexte de croissance des prix de l’énergie et d’exploitation minière à des profondeurs de plus en plus grandes, il est essentiel d’avoir des équipements de chargement et de transport les plus rentables possible. La présente étude, effectuée dans une mine souterraine, analyse la consommation énergétique et les émissions de gaz de chargeuses-navettes (LHD) au diésel et à l’électricité ayant des capacités de godet similaires. En se basant sur les prix courants de l’énergie, les résultats d’une simulation d’événements discrets montrent que les coûts énergétiques pour les LHD au diésel et à l’électricité sont respectivement de 0,24 $US/t et de 0,07 $US/t. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng. (Metallurgical Engineering) The weathering of kimberlite can be accelerated with cations in solution if swelling of the kimberlite occurs in contact with the weathering medium. The type and amount of swelling clays present, along with the surface charge and cation valence, determine the degree of swelling that can occur. Crystalline swelling occurs by the incorporation of cations in the interlayer spacing of the silica sheets. Kimberlite exposed to cupric cations showed very strong weathering, indicating that this type of weathering may be considered a viable process option. Kimberlite fines generated after weathering with monovalent cations showed poor settling behaviour compared to kimberlite weathered with di-, and trivalent cations.

Introduction The increasing demand placed on specialty contractors to provide cost effective buildable solutions to complex construction problems compels us in the industry to be highly innovative. The practice of geotechnical engineering is considered more of an "art" than perhaps the other disciplines within civil engineering largely because of the basic nature and variability of soil and rock. The geotechnical design engineer must have the knowledge of the components of his design and know the limitations of his equipment and labor force. Thus, for the design/build specialty contractor the potential for creation of unusual solutions to difficult problems is quite high.

Construction of the drilled shafts for the Brightman Street Bridge Replacement Project were not only challenging due to working over the water but were also challenged by changed soil conditions, concurrent work being performed by an adjacent contractor on the same project, environmental restrictions and severe winter conditions. A total of 36 x 8 feet diameter drilled shafts with 7.5 feet rock sockets were installed for the East and West bascule piers. This project also included Osterberg Cell load testing on two production drilled shafts at each the East and West bascule piers. The results from the load test program were used to fine tune the design of the drilled shaft rock sockets. From a constructability standpoint the reverse circulation drilling method with a pile top drill rig proved to be an excellent choice for drilling the overburden and rock sockets of the large diameter deep drilled shafts.

The Brukunga pyrite mine was operated from 1955 to 1972 to supply feedstock for sulfuric acid production in the South Australian fertilizer industry. Iron sulfide ore, mined by Nairne Pyrite Ltd, was finely crushed and concentrated onsite with the concentrates being sent by road and rail to Port Adelaide for roasting. Waste rock was dumped at two locations on the western side of Dawesley Creek and the tailings pumped to a valley-fill storage facility on the eastern side. Production of 1.5 Mt concentrate resulted in 3.5 Mt tailings and 8 Mt waste rock. The site has been administered by the South Australian Government since August 1977 and a lime treatment plant has been operated on the site since September 1980. Environmental issues arising from these operations included: diversion of Dawesley Creek to accommodate the waste rock dumps; dumping of low-grade sulfidic ore in waste rock dumps at the angle of repose immediately adjacent to Dawesley Creek; exposed fresh sulfide mineralisation in the quarry floor; tailings storage facility dam wall constructed by upstream up-lift using tailings and waste rock; an acid water pond sited on the tailings; and pollution of natural drainage. As a result, the minesite rapidly became a source of acid drainage and potential contaminants (sulfate, Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Zn, and Ni). Various Government bodies have been responsible for considerable effort and expenditure in reducing the flow of acid seepage and contaminants into Dawesley Creek. Presently an estimated 60 per cent of seepage from the waste rock dumps, tailings storage facility and quarry is collected and neutralised prior to discharge into the creek. Tailings have been covered with waste rock, biosolids, neutralisation sludge and soil and planted with grasses, shrubs and trees to reduce rainfall infiltration. Monitoring of water flows, water quality and riparian ecosystems is on-going. Consultants have been engaged to develop cost-effective remediation techniques and a five-member Brukunga Mine Site Remediation Board was appointed to oversee remediation of the site and liaise with the community. Construction has commenced on the diversion of Dawesley Creek, and plans are being developed for the relocation of waste rock back to the quarry benches and upgrading of the neutralisation plant. The paper examines operations, environmental monitoring, remediation, research and community involvement with respect to current best practice.

"A full-scale prototype of “Jameson Downcomer” technology has been installed and tested on a Tailings Oil Recovery (TOR) vessel in Syncrude’s Mildred Lake extraction plant. Jameson Downcomers are a type of mineral flotation equipment used in the coal industry that Syncrude has extended to the recovery of secondary bitumen in the oil sand extraction process. The TOR vessels are currently being operated as single-gravity separation vessels, in series with the Primary Separation Vessels (PSV’s). We have developed a model to differentiate between “floating” and “non-floating” bitumen in the PSV’s, and then applied it to verify that the current TOR performance only captures the “floating” bitumen by simple separation. The existence of “non-floating” bitumen provides an opportunity for recovery enhancement by means of the Jameson Downcomers. To achieve bitumen recovery enhancement, middlings slurry is withdrawn from the TOR vessel, and passed through a number of parallel Jameson downcomers, within which the slurry is accelerated to a high-velocity free jet, and impinged upon the slurry surface inside the downcomer, in the presence of air. The aerated slurry is returned to the middlings zone inside the TOR, resulting in an incremental recovery improvement of bitumen in the TOR. The operation of the downcomers is thought to produce suitably small air bubbles for the flotation of bitumen, either by fluid shearing during the slurry jet impingement, and/or by micro-bubble nucleation. This full-scale prototype design has met or exceeded the recovery expectations of the original Research piloting, recovering at least 40% of the non-floating bitumen. In Syncrude Extraction, this provides high business value by a separation efficiency gain achieved with modest expenditure. As well, the system has demonstrated excellent operability and maintainability.INTRODUCTION Syncrude Overview Syncrude Canada Ltd. is one of the largest producers of crude oil from oil sands. Our crude oil production facility has the capacity to produce over 15% of Canada's total oil requirements. To do this, we surface mine oil sand, extract the raw oil known as bitumen from the sand using water-based processes, and upgrade that bitumen into sweet light crude oil by fluid coking, hydro processing, hydro treating and reblending. Our final product, Syncrude Crude Oil (SCO), is sent by pipeline to three Edmonton area refineries and to pipeline terminals which ship it to other refineries in Canada and the United States. The Syncrude operation is comprised of four major technology areas: Mining, Extraction, Upgrading and Utilities. As well, Syncrude invests more than $40 million annually in science and technology, and is among the top 50 companies in Canada for Research and Development (R&D) investment. Syncrude holds 21 active Canadian and U.S. patents."
