Blasting safety is a subject that cannot be overemphasized. Two years ago, a study was published describing g a series of fatal blasting accidents which took the lives of ten metal and nonmetal miners during the period of May 1973 to August 1974.1 Each accident was described, and the direct causes were delineated. In each instance, specific MESA safety regulations were violated. Four of the victims were killed by drilling into explosives; two were killed by lingering too long in the vicinity of fuse rounds; two fatalities resulted from improper guarding of shots; one blaster did not retreat far enough to avoid the blast concussion; and another used an improper tester for checking an electric blasting cap. All of these fatalities could have been avoided by adhering to the MESA blasting regulations contained in 30 CFR Part 55 (Health and Safety Standards-Metal and Nonmetallic Open-Pit Mines), Part 56 (Health and Safety Standards-Sand, Gravel and Crushed Stone Operations), and Part 57 (Health and Safety Standards-Metal and Nonmetallic Underground Mines).

Mining companies are challenged with increased difficulty in delivering capital projects on schedule and within budget. In 2005, PricewaterhouseCoopers global review of major capital projects in the mining industry only 2.5% of projects could be defined as successful when assessed across the four critical dimensions of scope, cost, schedule and business benefits. Thus 97.5% of major mining capital projects were not successful according to the criteria PricewaterhouseCoopers used. Normally if a project fails on all these criteria it indicates scope creep. Scope creep refers to the change in a project's scope after the project work has started. As a result, the projects drift away from their original design, timeline, and budget, and as a consequence destroy business benefits. The major reasons for scope creep are poor change control and the lack of proper front end loading. Change control and front end loading are based on project processes in the planning and monitoring & control process group of the Project Management Body of Knowledge1 (PMBOK). This paper will focus on key factors to consider during project scheduling/planning with special reference to cost and schedule (using Microsoft Project as a tool although the principal is universal)

One criterion central to most definitions of reclamation is the restoration of mined lands to their original productive potential. This is often difficult to achieve on mined lands in the Northern Great Plains because of the rigorous climate (Bares 19;2) and various soil related problems including sodicity, salinity, soil permeability, low organic matter and plant nutrient deficiencies (Malakondaiah and Safaya 1982). Field study sites were established on recontotured mined areas during the early 1970's (prior to the topsoil mandate) in which several amendments were tested for their ability to improve spoil/topsoil conditions and, hence, increase plant production. Physical and chemical properties of these control (untreated) and amended spoils and topsoils have been summarized (Safaya et al. 1982). A number of grass and legume species combinations were studied. The general effects of one time (prior to seeding), single rate (approximately 100 mT ha-1) application of leonardite and/or slack coal to spoils and topsoils was the reduction of grass dry matter yields (NB 1 test site: dry matter yield (DMY) without slack was 110 g m 2 yr I ; DMY with slack was 80 g m -2 yr 1 I and the promotion of legume establishment and yield (SB test site: DMY without leonardite was 13 g m 2 yr -1; DMY with leonardite was 93 g m 2 yr 1). On South Beulah topsoil, treated with leonardite, production of weedy species was remarkably lower than that without leonardite (SB test site: DMY without leonardite was 252 g m - yr -1; DMY with leonardite was 177 g m 2 yr 1). The general effect of commercial fertilizer applied one time prior to seeding (rates ranging from 9-13-0 to 44-1 12-28 kg ha-1 of N-P-K) was to increase plant production during the first two to three years after which the effect disappeared. This effect was much more pronounced on spoils (NB I test site: DMY on spoils without fertilizer was 53 g m -2 yr -1; DMY on spoils with fertiliser was 132 gm -2 yr -1). Weedy species accounted for most of the biomas, production during the first growing season. Three of the test sites were designed to study plant production on topsoils and spoils. Establishment and production of grass species were comparatively better on topsoils (30 cm in depth) than on spoils while legumes were most successful on the soils (Center test site, 1979; DMY of grasses on topsoil was 170 g m 2 yr -1 DMY of grasses on spoils was 52 g m -2 yr -1; DMY of legumes on topsoil was 20 g m -2 yr -1; DMY of legumes on spoil was 191 g m 2 yr -1). Total plant production on topsoiled (302 m thickness) plots at the South Beulah site (DMY in 1979 of 269 g m 2 yr 1) was comparable to that of native western wheatgrass prairie (DMY of 262 g m -2 yr -1). An experiment was conducted to find out if time of planting would have any effect on establishment of grasses on spoils. It was fund that late fall seeding was superior to spring planting for establishment of wheatgrasses at NB 3 test site (Control Plot, 1975: DMY on spring-seeded was 1 g m -2 yr - 1; DMY on fall-seeded was 55 g m -2 yr -1). In general, wheatgrasses (slender, streambank, thickspike and western) yielded the most aboveground biomass of all the grass species tested; yellow sweetclover was the most successful legume. Yellow sweetclover established and was productive on both spoils and topsoils but only where competition with grasses was apparently minimal. Durar hard fescue established and thrived on topsoil but dry matter production was low compared to that of wheatgrasses. Emerald crown-vetch demonstrated a potential for growth on spoils where water conditions were adequate, whereas side-oats grama, prairie sand-reed, alkali sacaton, and bird's -foot trefoil demonstrated only sporadic success. Little bluestem did not become established at any of the test sites. Peak production of the planted species, especially grasses, was generally reached by the second week of July. Legume and weed production continued to increase into late August.

ABSTRACT: France now faces the closure of most of its mining sites. Surface instability risk may sometimes remain, especially where large underground voids exist. This paper illustrates the importance of failure mechanisms identification in order to define properly how to manage the residual risk. RESUME: La France fait aujourd’hui face à la fermeture de ses exploitations minières. Des risques d’instabilités de surface peuvent persister, notamment lorsque des vides résiduels existent au sein des travaux souterrains. L’article illustre l’importance que présente la nature des mécanismes de rupture potentiels dans le choix des mesures compensatoires à adopter pour gérer le risque résiduel à long terme. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In Frankreich stellt sich derzeit das Problem der definitiven Schliessung des meisten Bergwerke. In manchen fällen ist die Stabilität der Oberfläche nicht garantiert, speziell wenn unter Tage nicht verfüllte Hohlräume verblieben sind. "New Gold Inc.’s New Afton concentrator commenced operation in June 2012, producing a copper-gold-silver concentrate. During the first two years of operation, various optimization efforts have improved mill throughput, recoveries and concentrate grade. Daily mill throughput has increased 20% above the design rate. This was achieved through more consistent instantaneous feed rate and size distribution from the mine reclaim stockpile, higher pebble crusher reliability, changes to the SAG and ball mill grinding media sizes, larger SAG grate openings, reduced SAG discharge screen-deck aperture size and an increase in the maximum ball mill power draw limit. Metal recoveries at New Afton are primarily limited by liberation in the coarser size fractions; therefore, improving the grind size at a given mill throughput has been the main means of improving recovery. The average rougher flotation feed F80 size was reduced from 175µm in Q1 2013 to 165µm in Q1 2014, while the average operating mill throughput increased by 25%. Other flotation circuit changes focusing on recovery improvement include the addition of froth crowders to the rougher cells and the use of a stronger frother. The average concentrate grade increased from 22% Cu in Q1 2013 to 25% Cu in Q1 2014. This was achieved by redirecting the flash flotation concentrate stream to the regrind circuit and by the addition of lime to the cleaner circuit.This paper describes the above improvements made at the New Afton mill. The paper describes the objectives, timing and end result of each area of improvement.IntroductionThe New Afton Mine is situated approximately 10km west of Kamloops, British Columbia, 340km north-east of Vancouver. The mine has a moderate climate, access to transportation and electrical infrastructure, nearby fresh water supply, and close proximity to industrial and mining service businesses. The population of Kamloops is around 90,000 with most mine employees living in or around the city."

Multi-episodic mineralisation is often characterised by different spatial trends exhibited by different generations of the mineralisation. The structural complexity of mineralisation together with the heterogeneous nature of the mineralised zones prevents unambiguous application of the conventional deterministic methodology for 3D constraining of the mineralised domains (ie conventional wireframing is ambiguous).A different approach, discussed in the present paper, includes a probabilistic definition of the domains encompassing one statistical population of the data. The domains are defined geostatistically using the indicator probability model. An indicator threshold is chosen for the definition of the high and low-grade domains. The spatial distribution of this indicator is then modelled by a variogram. The probability of exceeding the given grade threshold is than estimated by ordinary kriging for each modelled block. Blocks are then grouped according to their probability of exceeding the threshold and a continuous closed volume (domain) created from this likely patchy grouping using an appropriate structural model to fill the gaps). Methodology for the geostatistically assisted domaining is discussed in the paper. It is suggested that this technique represents an additional tool facilitating a structural interpretation of the mineralised zones.After the geostatistical domaining of the lode has been completed the grade within each of the domains is modelled using Uniform Conditioning method. Application of Uniform Conditioning for modeling the grade distribution has a significant advantage over linear methods (such as inverse distance or kriging) because Uniform conditioning enables estimation of local recoverable resources at different selective mining unit sizes that can be substantially smaller than the drilling density and are unable to be estimated directly.

Deposits of low-grade iron ores containing abundant goethite are distributed across the world. A common difficulty associated with beneficiating goethitic-rich ores is the poor liberation characteristics of the iron-bearing minerals which often contain finely disseminated gangue minerals such as kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz. Microwave-assisted heating has been proposed as an effective way of inducing dehydroxylation and associated mineral transformations in order to beneficiate low-grade goethitic ores. In this research, the mineral transformations occurring in a low-grade goethite-rich sample using microwave radiation was studied. Roasting conditions (up to 1000°C and under various CO/CO2 gas atmospheres) were designed to generate a magnetic product from a goethite-rich, reject waste stream sample sourced from an iron ore processing site in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Conditions (T, pO2) for transforming the raw material from hydrated goethite to hematite and eventually to magnetite are presented. Chemical and mineralogical characterisation of the raw material and roast products were conducted using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques to identify the mineralogical and chemical changes occurring during the heat treatment. Further steps are suggested to optimise the microwave-assisted magnetising roasting and correlate it with the application of magnetic separation techniques to maximise the efficiency of upgrading the iron content in low-grade iron ores.CITATION:Nunna, V, Hapugoda, S and Pownceby, M I, 2017. A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Geomechanics Group in the University of British Columbia Mining Engineering Department is to incorporate weak rock masses (RMR76 less than 50) into existing empirical design relationships. An emphasis is being placed upon the updated span design curve/critical span graph originally developed at UBC. The original database has been augmented by mapping of one mine in Montana and of several mines within the Carlin and Getchell Trends of Nevada. In addition, a neural network analysis has been performed and modifications of the span design curves at the lower RMR76 range have been made. The common factor in all the above mentioned mines is a weak back and/or walls. In most cases, the ore zone is the weakest rock unit and must be dealt with to safely extract the mineral bearing rock. This work attempts to provide rock mechanic tools that will enable a mine operator to make economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment.

"Over the years many differing approaches have been developed to clearly understand the nature, mode of occurrence, associations and deportment of both free-milling and refractory gold in a wide variety of differing geologic environments and plant products. Many approaches can be taken to characterize the ore which may occur as complex fine grained gold, ultra-fine grained gold, coarse nuggetty gold, complex Asrich refractory gold and double-refractory gold. The approach taken in assessing small drill core composites from Novo Resources Beaton Creek Paleoplacer gold project located in the Pilbara region of Australia was complicated by the nature of the ore, the small amount of sample available from current exploration work, and the gold grade and the grain size distribution. In this case the scope of the study was limited by sample availability although significant amounts of valuable information was also gained. This gold characterization study included the following elements:??Size fraction assays??Ore microscopy??Preparation of heavy mineral concentrates from sized fractions (screening) of crushed or milled head using heavy liquids and Superpan table.??Systematic scans of the heavy mineral concentrate, middling, and tailing fractions using TIMA Automated Scanning Electron Microscopy integrated with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometry to provide semi-quantitative elemental analysis of the individual grains found in the sample.The unique methodology employed to detail the gold deportment was the combination of the Tescan Integrated Mineral Analyser (TIMA) and the Oxford INCA GSR software. This technique not only allowed us to document the deportment of gold but recognize other associated minerals, which included gersdorffite, chalcopyrite, uraninite, coffinite, brannerite and several Rare Earth-bearing minerals.INTRODUCTIONGold deportment studies are commonly carried out on preliminary gold exploration projects in order to determine the various limitations, which may effect processing of the potential ore. This is often because it may be expected that there may be a refractory component to the gold, which may limit physical separation techniques and suggest more costly hydrometallurgical techniques. Often when carrying out gold deportment studies the mineralogical methods may be limited to assuming that the gold will be fine and easily found using standard techniques of optical microscopy or Scanning Electron Microscopy. This may not always be the case as various geological environments may pose their own individual problems to determining the deportment of the gold grains."

The experimental results of study of atmospheric corrosion processes on Saint-Petersburg bronze monuments surface, received in situ and by means of simulating experiments, have been discussed. Influence of the time factor on corrosion film (patina) mineral composition has been analyzed. Direct dependence between patina mineral composition and environmental conditions has been proved. The sequence of patina phases crystallization has been established. Effect of the chemical composition and heterogeneity of artistic bronze and also monument surface structure on the rate of corrosion process has been regarded. The time variations of mass of the crystallized in the hydrochloric acid vapor phases have been investigated. The kinetic laws of their development at the initial stage of formation, indicating simple (non chain) reactions, have been revealed.

The domestic concentrate used by the Shanghai Meishan Metallurgical Corporation in Nanjing contains significant siderite, magnetite and haematite, the siderite having a substantial influence on its sintering behaviour. On the basis of experimental findings and published information it is proposed that siderite decomposition starts at c.400 degrees C and results in the formation of CO and/or H2, which then reduces the haematite to magnetite prior to the initiation of high-temperature sintering; inter-mixed particles of Australian haematite and pisolite ores also undergo significant reduction. As the gaseous reduction process is so effective, low-temperature forms of silico-ferrite of Ca and Al (SFCA) cannot form even at high sinter basicity. The bench-scale results were confirmed in a pilot-scale facility whose sinters consisted mainly of magnetite, high-temperature SFCA and glass, which is typical of sinters formed from mixes with high magnetite levels

During the past few years, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating developments in sealant support systems from a ground control perspective. The proper selection and use of a sealant material can significantly enhance ground control which may result in a decrease in worker related injuries due to ground falls. The purpose of this paper is threefold: to briefly review the current state-of-the-art technology in shotcrete and membrane developments, to evaluate the preliminary findings of a long-term underground study of various types of sealant materials, and to examine installation practices that are critical for an effective sealant material. The underground study utilizes NIOSH’s Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine to evaluate the long-term performance of several types of shotcrete and membrane materials. Sealant performance to date have been evaluated on a regular basis over a two year period. Although the study is still ongoing, critical mining practices were identified that may seriously effect the bond of the sealant materials to the mine roof and rib; most notably, the importance of scaling and thorough cleaning of the rib prior to application. Also, results froman extensive series of Schmidt Hammer tests found that the shotcrete increased in strength by 70% during the humid summer months.

As one of the largest private utilities globally, E.ON currently operates hard coal fired power stations in with a total installed capacity of some 20.000 MW: These thermal power plants consume domestic coals but are increasingly dependent on imported seaborne traded coal (in 2009 approx. 17 million t). Knowing that the company’s reputation and credibility depends in part on how E.ON lives up to the responsibilities along the entire energy value chain, E.ON takes a collaborative approach with the various suppliers. Hence, E.ON’s responsible policy also applies to the procurement of coal; the utility launched in 2009 a comprehensive Corporate Responsibility program with special focus on supply-chain audits. One of the first coal audits focussed on the Cerrejón coal mine in North Eastern Colombia. The authors will share the key learning’s and experience from the Colombian audit jointly conducted with an independent auditor and E.ON experts from the Corporate CR and E.ON Energy Trading.

This final report documents the work dune by Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL) on behalf of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC), on Contract H0122026 (which began in August of 1971). Under this contract ADL provided technical assistance to the Bureau on a task basis on virtually all aspects of the Bureau's programs related to present and planned emergency and operational communications and miner location systems for underground coal mines. The work consisted of independent investigations, analyses, experiments, breadboard and prototype hardware development, workshops and technology transfer seminars on mine communications, and on-going evaluations and guidance related to the Bureau's contracted programs on electromagnetic noise, mine communications systems, and trapped miner location. This final report documents the work in two volumes, Volume I, "Emergency and Operational Mine Communications," and Volume II, "Seismic Detection and Location of Isolated Miners." The Tables of Contents of both Volumes are included in each Volume. Phase I of the contract was devoted to performing an in-depth assessment of electromagnetic noise measurements taken by several contractors and other investigators, and then defining a new noise measurement program and instrumentation system tailored to obtain the necessary but missing noise data. These data are required for use in the design of new emergency and operational communication systems. This work, and the follow-on coordination and guidance activities of ADL on this noise measurement program in subsequent phases of the contract, are treated in Part One of Volume I.

Geological modelling has historically been done using sectional interpretation of paper sections or on a computer screen. Boundaries of geological units or grade shells are interpreted by a geologist section by section and the shapes are drawn onto paper to be digitised later or they are directly digitised into a computer. This approach is referred to as explicit modelling. Such methods are time consuming if there are many section lines or boundaries to be interpreted. The number of metres drilled and resource models made is increasing each year and it will be difficult to keep up using explicit modelling methods. Alternatively, it is possible to use information carried in the drill holes, known geological relationships and point estimation methods in two or three dimensions, to create similar geology boundaries, while eliminating or at least greatly reducing the need to manually interpret and digitise detailed sectional interpretations. Such methods are referred to as implicit modelling and are available in a number of software packages. Implicit modelling approaches have been used in iron ore and found to significantly reduce the time needed for modelling while producing results that are comparable or better than standard explicit modelling approaches. A number of case studies have been undertaken of implicit modelling in iron ore deposits. Stratigraphic surfaces of bedded, folded and faulted iron ore deposits have been modelled in various deposits by Leapfrog Geo, GOCAD (with SKUA) and Vulcan Integrated Stratigraphic Modelling. Leapfrog Mining was used to model iron grade shells at particular cut-off grades. The modelled surfaces are of a high standard equivalent to those that could be produced by traditional explicit modelling but the time required by the implicit methods is far less. Implicit geological modelling is an active area of software development and improvements in software are likely.CITATION:Boyle, C and Latscha, A-A, 2013. Introduction In northern Ontario, refractory clay is found on four rivers of the James Bay watershed: the Abitibi, the Mattagami, the Missinaibi, and the Moose. The clay all belongs to the same geological formation ( the Mattagami of Lower Cretaceous age) , and occurs within a structural depression or 'basin', the boundaries of which have never been defined but which appears to cover at least 1,500 square miles of territory. The recently constructed James Bay extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway crosses the northeast end of the basin at the Onakawana lignite field, which by rail is 126 miles north of Cochrane, 605 miles north of Toronto, and 60 miles southwest of Moose Factory. Smoky Falls, the northern terminus of the railway owned by the Spruce Falls Power & Paper Company, Limited, is 7 miles south of one other point in the basin, i.e., the outcrops of refractory clay, sand, and kaolin at the foot of Long rapids on the Mattagami river. Smoky Falls is 50 miles north of Kapuskasing. In a very early report(l) , Dr. Robert Bell, of the Geological Survey of Canada, described '"light coloured marl in horizontal beds" from the Missinaibi river, and noted that the lignite also occurring in the river was probably :associated with the marls. This was undoubtedly the Cretaceous refractory day. Other early writers noted the occurrence of fire-clays, but it was not until Joseph Keele(2), of the Geological Survey, visited thee region in 1919 and studied the clays that their real significance was known.
