In response to the need for enhanced precautionary measures to safeguard mine workers in collieries from the consequences of methane ignitions in a heading, the coal mining industry has ex- pressed the desire for the development and testing of active on board suppression systems. As overseas systems cannot be used directly in the bord and pillar geometry it is necessary to adapt overseas and local technology to suit local mining conditions, as well as to test such developed systems for their compliance with the expressed needs. As the systems have to be tested in a specific roadway configuration, a facility was developed to enable the testing in South Africa. A surface test facility has been established which can be used to develop and test suppression systems on continuous miners and roadheaders. This facility consists of a tunnel wherein compliance tests can be conducted in simulated underground conditions. A number of methane explosion tests have been conducted in the test facility. The explosions conducted varied in CH,/air concentration (7,5 to 9 percent) and volume (26 to 88 m3). At lower concentrations there was a marked reduction in explosion strength and flame speed. Tests carried out with the Explostop system successfully suppressed the propagation of methane ignitions in both scenarios tested.

Gold and silver often occur finely disseminated in sulphide minerals such as pyrite. The use of biological leaching to dissolve pyrite and liberate gold has been extensively studied for a concentrate from the Porgera deposit, Papua New Guinea. The successful operation of a continuous bioleach circuit has been demonstrated. Bioleach residues were cyanide leached to extract gold and silver, and unreacted pyrite recovered for recycle to the bioleach. A 26 day steady state continuous bioleach test on a concentrate assaying 14.3 g/tonne Au and 87.0 g/tonne Ag produced residues with an average 73.5% weight loss and a pyrite oxidation of 88%. Cyanidation and recovery of pyrite from the cyanide residues for recycle gave overall recoveries of 92.1% gold and 74.6% silver. A proportion of the remaining precious metals was found in the bioleach solutions and may be recoverable. Losses to tails were 3.0% gold and 8.1% silver. Final tails represented 14.3% of the feed weight and averaged 1.84 g/tonne Au. A description of the continuous bioleach circuit and bioleach residue handling procedures, and the results of the study are presented. The features and advantages of biological oxidation as a pretreatment for refractory precious metal ores and concentrates are discussed.

This paper deals with the concept of a Quality-Assurance Manual, to the ISO-9001 Level, for quarry blasting in the urban environment. A case history of the incident, which led to its development, is presented in addition to three other case histories. These case histories are related to the potential effectiveness of a well thought-out and applied Quality-Assurance Manual in the conclusions. The basic principle, behind the development of a Q-A manual, is to supply a maximum of quality assurance with a minimum of disturbance to the operation of the quarry. This requires that every intervener in the quarry blasting operations, from management to labourer, be made responsible for the quality of their work. This basic goal can be achieved with a minimum of paper work and added bureaucracy. The manual respects the ISO principle that: Q-A Manuals are not recipe books and should allow for continuing technological developments.

"Ventilation is one of the most important features of coal mining, and if a mine is exceptionally gassy it is often difficult to ventilate it in such a way as to make it safe. The general system of splitting the main air current so that two, three, or more sets of room entries are ventilated by the same current of air does not provide a safe method if non-permissible electrical equipment, such as cable-reel, crab-reel, or trolley locomotives are used on gathering haulage, or if open-type hoist or pump motors are used. The problem has been greatly simplified at the Crucible mine of the Crucible Fuel Co. at Crucible, Pennsylvania.The system is not only applicable to the room-and-pillar method of mining, but it may be adopted for any panel system of mining. There also appears to be a definite application in mechanized mining, where the rapid extraction often results in inadequate attention to ventilation and where the gassiness of the section generally increases because, as compared to hand loading, the methane has less time to drain off. The Salobo Project will be the first Vale operation to use an HPGR mill to process copper-gold ore. The mine is located in Para state, southeast of the Amazon region in Brazil. The circuit was designed to treat 12 million metric tons per year of finely disseminated sulphide ore with high hardness. The comminution circuit comprises a gyratory primary crusher, secondary crushing utilizing two cone crushers, two 2 x 1.5 m HPGR operating in closed configuration with 6 mm screens, followed by two 26 x 40 ft ball mills. The concentration circuit consists of two rougher flotation stages using mechanical cells, regrinding with vertical mills, three cleaner stages with columns and one cleaner scavenger stage in mechanical cells. The concentrate is dewatered, filtered and transported by trucks and train to the port, to be exported. The circuit was designed on the basis of data obtained from a comprehensive laboratory and pilot plant campaign. The ore variability was assessed through simulation using data from a drilling core characterization program. The start-up of the industrial plant is planned for 2011. This paper describes the main aspects of circuit design, as well as information related to the beginning of the project construction.

Syncrude Canada operates the largest oil sands crude oil production facility in the world and produces over 13 percent of Canada?s total oil requirements. To do this, Syncrude mines the oil sand in open pits, extracts the raw oil known as bitumen from the sand using water-based processes and upgrades it into sweet light crude oil by fluid coking, hydroprocessing, hydrotreating and reblending. The final product, Syncrude Sweet Blend (SSB) is sent by pipeline to three Edmonton area refineries and then to pipeline terminals which ship the SSB to refineries in Canada and the United States. As parts of the Mildred Lake Base Mine reached their economic life, they were replaced with new facilities at the Aurora satellite mine. Aurora is situated on Oilsand Leases 10, 12, and 34, 35 kilometres northeast of the Mildred Lake facility. (Figure 1) In 2000 the first hydrotransport low energy extraction production train started up at Aurora. A second production train is scheduled for start up in 2003. Open pit mining at Aurora occurs using two hydraulic shovels, two cable shovels, and trucks ranging from 320 ton to 380 ton payload capacities.

Handling of heavy vehicles such as tractors, trucks and buses require a large roll stiffness which causes large high accelerations at the seat level during impacts. To provide comfort and minimize the energy transfer from the chassis and the seat a pneumatic active seat suspension is proposed. An active seat suspension design and control algorithm under development at the University of Illinois at Chicago, UIC, is being developed and tested. Preliminary results are presented in this paper. The design of a passive suspension typically consists of optimizing the value of two parameters: the stiffness and the damping of the suspension. The general dynamic performance of the suspension is limited to the conditions under which these parameters were obtained. A change in the input conditions might lead to poor suspension and an amplification of the vibration transmitted to the body. The focus of this paper is a robust, semi-active suspension system with a variable controlled damping and using the body response an index measure to minimize the acceleration at the interface of the seat and operator. A summary of existing suspensions, such as MR and ER fluids, and spring loaded and dual valve shock absorbent will be discussed to highlight the need of a semi-active pneumatic suspension system design. Methods A model of the proposed suspension was developed in MATLB (Simulink) and different control strategies for the valve position in relation to the cylinder pressure tested. The effects of stiffening and softening resulting from pressure changes in the cylinder were examined. The vertical accelerations of the seat was computed for different control strategies and configurations of the suspension and compared to the response of a passive seat suspension. A lump -mass model was created to represent the human body including the head, the upper, middle and lower torso as well as the legs. The connective forces between body segments were modeled through modal analysis techniques from previous experiments at the Vehicle Technology Laboratory. ISO standards and absorbed power were used to evaluate the different configuration of the seat suspension system in relation to the dynamic response of the operator. Results Initial results of the semi-active suspension system show a significant reduction in the RMS value of the acceleration of the seat. A reduction of the total absorbed power by the operator is expected to provide an insight into the control strategies adapted in the active suspension.

A series of four coal combustion experiments was conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to evaluate the response of fire sensors to a small 0.61 m square smoldering coal fire which transitions to flaming combustion in the presence of diesel emissions. An optical path smoke sensor alarmed earlier than a point type diffusion mode ionization smoke sensor which alarmed prior to a CO alert value of 5 PPM above ambient. The presence of steady state diesel emissions resulted in a decrease in the optical smoke sensor analog output voltage signal by less than 1.4 pct for the three coal fire experiments in which a diesel engine was operating, whereas the ionization smoke sensor output decreased between 10.8 and 26.7 pct after the initial surge of the diesel engine. A commercial diesel discriminating fire sensor did not alarm for a fire in the one experiment for which it was used. The results of the experiments demonstrated that an optical path smoke sensor might be used to detect a coal fire under the experimental conditions considered of starting a diesel engine followed by a slowly developing coal fire.

A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) program was used to model buoyancy induced Product-Of-Combustion (POC) spread from experimental fires in the National Institute For Occupational Safety And Health (NOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), safety research coal mine. In one application, the CFD program was used to predict spread from fires in an entry under zero airflow conditions. At a location, 0.41 m below the entry's roof at a distance of 30 m from the fire, the measured smoke spread rates were 0.093 and 0.23 m/s for a 30 and a 296 kw fire, respectively. The CFD program predicted spread rates of 0.15 and 0.26 m/s based upon the measured fire heat production rates. Based upon a computation with [c3h3] as the hydrocarbon fuel, a predicted 5 PPM co alert time of 70 s at a distance of 30 m from the fire is to be compared with the measured alert time of 148 s. In a second application, the CFD program was used to analyze smoke flow reversal conditions, and the results were compared with visual observations of smoke reversal for 12 diesel fuel fires. The CFD predictions were in qualitative agreement with visual observations of smoke reversal.

The commonly used exact methods (1-2) to determine the WL measure the total a activity or the total number of a counts during three preselected time periods. Due to the half-lives involved (TRaB = 26.8 min, TRaC = 19.7) I these methods take 3S minutes to complete the a activity Ra measurements. Methods using the total a counts, obtained at times less than about one RaB half-life after the end of sampling run into statistical 214 problems. These methods are almost blind to RaB (Pb214) as a consequence of its relatively long half period (see above) and the fact that RaB is a ß emitter. The way out of this dilema is to measure RaB directly through its ß activity. Since RaB's daughter Rae (Bi214) is also a ß emitter, the two f3 spectra have to be separated to obtain RaB alone. How this is accomplished 1s described in subsequent sections describing the theory of the IWLM and its calibration. 2.0 THEORY The IWLM samples air for two minutes and counts this airs ample for two minutes starting 3 sec after the end of the sampling period. The instrument has three channels. The lower a channel, the upper a channel, and one ß channel. The total RaA counts observed are accumulated in the lower a channel, the total RaC? counts are stored in the upper a channel. The total ß counts from RaB and RaC are recorded in the ß channel. These three quantities are functions of NA, NB, and NC, the unknown concentrations

At one time explosives were the only economical means of rock tunnel excavation. Except in relatively long tunnels in the right rock explosives are still the cheapest means of rock excavation where they can be used. Today the most economical means of rock tunnel excavation is increasingly not the choice of the contractor. A good part of our work is for public agencies in urban areas and the public today is increasingly less tolerant of the disruption caused by our efforts. Owners in many cases have to direct their engineers to write specifications which severely restrict noise and vibration levels during construction. Sometimes specifications allow drill-and-shoot for starter tunnels only or even eliminate powder by fiat. Recent advances in the use of explosives such as sequential firing have made blasting more palatable to the public but are not enough in all situations. Thus the roadheaders on construction projects. In recent work I have seen the Alpine Miners, a Paurant Miner and the Robbins Mobile Miners used in several rock formations and now believe this type of equipment has a place in the tunnel constructor's choice of equipment. Rudy and I have not attempted to present a formula for choosing the best alternative excavation method in any given case because, of course, of the variables involved. We have simply tried to describe our experiences on a particular project and hope our observations will be of some value to tunnel constructors.

Seven legendary figures of American mining will be enshrined in the National Mining Hall of Fame in ceremonies on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City, UT. The 15th annual induction banquet will begin with a reception at 6 pm, followed at 7 pm by the dinner and the program. Of the seven inductees, one is living. He is Alexander Murray (Bud) Wilson, 80, of Los Altos, CA. Wilson led Utah Construction (later Utah International) to become one of the world’s most diversified and successful mining companies in the 1960s and 1970s. It was acquired by General Electric in 1976.

Because of price structure, ANFO is normally considered to be the most cost effective explosive used in quarry blasting. Results indicate that bulk smulsion can be more cost effective in applications where hole sizes range up to 6.5 inches in diameter while providing the simplicity of single product loading and storage. This can be accomplished without any fragmentation and/or movement loss usually in patterns which are about twice the size of ANFO patterns, allowing the combined drilling and blasting cost to be less when using bulk emulsions. Examples are presented supporting this concept using actual field results along with some simple calculations which take into account differences in the products such as density, matrix and detonation velocity.

INTRODUCTION THE DEMAND for general knowledge on asbestos fibres has increased considerably in recent years. A few publications have printed data showing some of the physical and chemical prupertie3 of asbestos, but in many cases this information is difficult to find and is seldom available when needed. During the past ten years, Johns-Manville have received many inquiries on the physical and chemical properties of asbestos fibres. Fortunately, we had some of the information in our files, and we willingly supplied the data. To help relieve this need, we have tried to present briefly in this paper some of the interesting and out-standing properties of asbestos. This information was obtained over a period of years by search of the literature and by experimental investigations. PROPERTIES OF ASBESTOS FIBRES Table I (1, 2) presents, in convenient form for easy comparison, data on the principal properties of the several varieties of commercial 'asbestos' -actinolite, amosite, anthophyllite, chrysotile, crocidolite, and tremolite. Under each variety of fibre is a brief statement describing the properties in terms of structure, mineral association, origin, etc. Some of the more important data in Table I are expanded and presented in Table II (3). SOLUBILITY OF ASBESTOS A report ( 4, 5) discussing the effects of acids and caustic on asbestos fibres was published in Germany in 1927.

The paper describes the two foundation techniques - mini piles and postgrouted bored piles. The mini pile system is presented with its design and installation parameters, especially the drilling technique. Two case histories demonstrate the application under extremely limited space and traffic conditions and the required modifications of the equipment. After the description of the postgrouted bored piles and its grouting technique, the paper gives a comparison of postgrouted piles and standard piles on a large basic test in Germany. The Brooklyn Queen's Expressway, N.Y., case history shows the application of this technique after redesign of the original proposal. 1. General Increasing requirements to improve existing foundations to carry additional loads and to increase the bearing capacity of bored piles leads to two new piling techniques: the mini-pile and the post grouted bored pile.

The evaporation of crude oil without doubt causes one of the largest single losses to which the oil is subjected after it is taken from the ground. The few days during which crude oil is stored on the lease before being taken by the pipe line, causes an aggregate loss per year from evaporation estimated at 122,100,000 gallons of gasoline in the Mid-Continent field alone. This has a value, at 22 cents per gallon, of $26,880,000 and represents about 3 per cent of the total gasoline produced in the United States from all fields and all sources. It describes briefly operations and mining methods at the Basic Refractories , Inc. , brucite deposit , the only commercial deposit of brucite in production in the United States . The mine and crushing plant are in secs . 26 and 35 , T. 12 N. , R. 36 E. , M. D. B. & M. , northwestern Nye County , Nev . , 1 mile east of Gabbs and about 33 miles northeast of Luning , a town on the Mina branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad and U. S. Highway 95. The Phu Kham copper-gold operation located in Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited, based in Brisbane Australia, holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining 10 per cent held by the Government of Laos PDR.The 12Mt/y copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. Flotation copper and gold recovery from commissioning was consistently poor, due to the high levels of pyrite and problematic secondary and oxide copper species and non-sulfide gangue.The low recoveries of copper and gold from Phu Kham were recognised during the feasibility study design phase. A bulk sulfide flotation regime in roughing produced high recoveries, however a large capacity cleaning circuit was required and there was risk of not meeting saleable concentrate grade specifications. The installed design offered a capital efficient compromise to ensure that a concentrate grade of 24% copper could be achieved at acceptable recoveries.Incremental improvements in copper recovery were achieved by 2011 through conversion of conditioning cells to flotation cells in both roughing and first cleaning and increased cleaner capacity through the installation of a Jameson cell. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase mill throughput, along with additional rougher and cleaner capacity to increase residence times at the nominal 16 Mt/y throughput. The marginal reduction in primary grind size due to the additional ball milling power also provided a small recovery improvement.This paper presents the development, design, implementation, and performance of the Increased Recovery Project commissioned in April 2013 which targeted the major causes of copper loss from the circuit. Based on fundamental and detailed test work and mineralogical analysis of concentrator streams, an optimised design was developed which has increased copper and gold recoveries by over 5% and 10% respectively. The Increased Recovery Project has positioned the concentrator to process high pyrite ores that were previously considered untreatable, and opened further opportunities for maximising flotation recovery by de-bottlenecking plant regrind and cleaning capacity.CITATION:Hoyle, A, Bennett, D and Walker, P, 2015.
