This report, the first in a series of 13 reports, provides a summary of 11 major topics on which individual reports have been prepared. These major topics are: (a) Nature of coal mine spoils, topsoils, and unmined soils; (b) influence of macro- and microclimate on (c) plant production on spoils and topsoils; (d) prediction of aboveground biomass from plant cover; (c) mineral composition of plants; (f) controlled environment studies on plant growth response; (g) microbial communities (h) water chemistry and organism diversity of catchbasins; (i) vegetation and soil development on abandoned, and (j) topsoiled sites; and (k) viability and diversity of seed bank. Based on these investigations, general conclusions and some recommendations are presented.

A testing program was conducted to design a cemented backfill fur hydraulic placement in underhand cut and fill mining of a steeply dipping coal seam. The testing evaluated the use of three different backfill aggregates, locally available at the coal mine, with Portland cement and five different pozzolans, including a Class F fly ash, a Class C fly ash, a cement kiln dust and ground smelter slag. Both viscosity and uniaxial compressive strength of backfill mixtures with different pozzolan and Portland cement contents were used to evaluate their suitability. Based upon the results of preliminary testing, an optimum mixture of alluvial sand with six percent Portland cement and ten percent Class F pozzolan was chosen for further compression testing.

At the construction site of Bao Shan Iron &. Steel Mill in Shanghai, lots of RC driven piles with length of 50 to 60m were applied. The most unfavourable distribution of stress along the pile shaft was known by measuring the compressive and tensive stresses. With analysing the test results a phenomenon of impact fatigue of RC pile was discovered, the range of impact fatigue and its critical zone can be distinguished. Finally some countermeasures are presented to avoid the impact fatigue of RC long pile.

The mine scheduling process defines a mining sequence across the life of the mine and stipulates the amount of ore, waste, and specific blocks to be mined each year so that the highest economic return can be obtained under a number of constraints. There are a number of mine scheduling software packages available. Each claims to be the best scheduler by maximizing Net Present Value (NPV) or by minimizing overall mining costs. These mine scheduling programs follow different procedures and scheduling philosophies based on either mathematical or heuristic principles. There was no study in which the mine production scheduling procedures applied by these packages were discussed and compared. This paper evaluates four open pit mine scheduling programs recently developed and compares them in order to determine if significant differences exist among them. The same input data, which consist of a 3-D block model, an economic set of parameters, and the initial surface topography for a operating copper mine in Southern Peru, was used to test each technique. The following programs were investigated with respect to their ability to optimize the NPV for the case study. 1) M821V1 Scheduler by Mintec; 2) NPV Scheduler by Earthworks; 3) Milawa Scheduler by Whittle Programming; and, 4) Fundamental Tree Scheduling Method (FTSM) developed at the Colorado School of Mines. The results from this case study demonstrate that the scheduling software packages, Mintec, Earthworks, and Whittle obtained similar NPV’s, while FTSM scheduler gave a six percent higher NPV than the other schedulers.

In response to the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, mandatory noise standards have been developed that specify time-noise limits of mine personnel exposure. Most affected by elevated noise levels is the pneumatic roof bolter operator, both in terms of levels near or in excess of 115 dbA and in terms of length of exposure. Therefore, the principal emphasis of this Bureau of Mines report is on pneumatic drill noise control. It is not the intent of this report to suggest any drill redesign; instead, methods are suggested to reduce the noise level by complementing existing machines. An integral muffler system and a separate muffler system were tested in an attempt to lower pneumatic drill noise levels. Pneumatic drills, when new, operate at about 115 dbA when drilling in sandstone. Using the drill muffler systems, it was possible to decrease the noise level of a 115-dbA stope drill to approximately 100 dbA.

The purpose of this program is to extend electromagnetic (EM) techniques for use in locating miners trapped in mines as deep as 1000 m. A previously developed EM system is considered adequate for use at mines less than 300 m deep where it has a probability of detection of 54%. A system for deep mines must keep underground equipment simple, and use extremely low frequencies (ELF), sensitive receivers, and noise cancellation. The proposed location method, developed by Develco for other applications, is based on vector field measurements from two or more static sensors and computation of source location by iterative techniques. During Phase II, very sensitive search coil sensors were built and used in a separate test to verify the feasibility of atmospheric noise cancellation. A "Breadboard" location system version without cancellation, which is a fieldable test bed to evaluate receiving and location functions, was tested and supplied. Very good results were achieved from the first in-mine test with the transmitter at a depth of 380 m. It is expected the results of this work, and additional evaluation tests in the future, will be used to define the requirements for a prototype operational system.

Reservoir properties including porosity and permeability distributions in longwall coal mine gobs have direct application to modeling the flow patterns and gas distributions in the gobs. Proper assessment of these distributions is required to assess gob gas hazards such as spontaneous combustion and explosive methane mixtures and to optimize gob gas venthole operation and nitrogen inertization. Determining the reservoir properties is difficult given that the gob is inaccessible and direct measurements cannot be easily taken. Several techniques have been used by previous researchers and will be discussed. This paper will present the methodology used to model the gob compaction by simulating the sequential extraction of coal. Two Western US coal mines were used for case studies. By determining volumetric strain, the porosity and permeability distributions in the gob can be calculated. The geo-mechanical model predicts an axisymmetric volumetric strain distribution with a steeper slope near the start-up room and a shallower slope near the active face.

A report on location, sampling, assays, mineral examination, amenability leach tests, and evaluation of certain mine dumps in Mohave County, Arizona. Extractions of greater than 30 percent of the gold and silver were achieved during simulated heap leaching of selected mine dump material. Consumption of reagents was relatively low and results suggest leaching of prepared heaps is technically viable and could be economically attractive.

"A pilot plant study was conducted to evaluate the performance of column flotation in the recovery of gold from a gold/tellurides bearing sulphide ore, and to compare the performance of column flotation to conventional ""mechanically agitated"" flotation.Tests were conducted in a 60 liter glass column with ground flotation feed split from a concurrently operating conventional pilot plant, thus permitting direct comparison between the two processes. During the test program, the effects of wash water rate, gas holdup, froth depth, residence time and flow bias were examined in detail.The ore had an average ""as tested"" feed grade of about 5 g/t gold and 1 % sulphur, with the gold occurring primarily as inclusions of montbragite (Au2Te3) in pyrite, with minor amounts of native gold. Conventional flotation using 60 minutes residence time across four roughing stages recovered about 97% of the gold into concentrates grading about 50 g/t Au. A single stage of column flotation roughing using 25 minutes residence time matched the conventional circuit recovery of 97%, but produced grades of+ 150 g/t Au. INTRODUCTIONColumn flotation is the most significant innovation that has occurred in the mineral processing industry in recent years and has become an important alternative to mechanical flotation. Column flotation has been most widely accepted and applied in cleaning service where it has frequently proven to be superior to mechanically agitated flotation. Roughing in columns has not been ignored, but early testing indicated that columns may not be capable of achieving adequate recovery and, to date, columns have not been seen as serious competitors for mechanical roughers."

As this paper is written, the only method for the commercial production of lithium metal is by the fusion electrolysis of LiC1-KC1 mixtures, as first proposed by Gunkz.2 The details of the industrial process have not been made public hut Osborg8 stated that an efficiency of more than 90 pct is obtained with a lithium metal recovery above 95 pct and that the metal is 99.5 pct pure. Pletenev9 gave a power consumption of 66 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium metal produced with a salt consumption of 9 kg of LiCl and 0.4 kg of KCI. Pletenev's figures indicate a somewhat lower recovery than that given by Osborg. In a recent report on' German lithium plants, Motock7 gives figures that are also less favorable than those reported by Osborg. At the German plants the lithium recovery in electrolysis was only 83.4 pct, with a power consumption of 140 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium. The metal averaged only 97 pct pure, with sodium and potassium as the chief impurities. The presence of SO2, SO3, SiO2, Ba, Ca, and appreciable amounts of Na and Fe2O3 were especially disturbing in the electrolysis, and it was necessary to run the cell for some time to eliminate most of these impurities and condition the bath. It may be noted here that most of these impurities do not interfere with a thermal reduction process. These facts show that the present method of producing lithium is fairly efficient and would suggest that other methods could not compete. However, fusion electrolysis has certain drawbacks, such as the necessity of supplying costly, low-voltage direct current and of collecting and processing the anodic chlorine if it is not to be wasted. An even greater disadvantage is that lithium chloride must be used for an electrolyte. It is one of the most expensive salts of lithium, since it cannot be produced in anhydrous form by precipitation from aqueous solution, as is done with LiF or Li2CO3. The reduction of lithium by a vacuum process similar to the ferrosilicon method for the production of magnesium would have certain advantages. Small units such as Pidgeon retorts, would give flexibility of production to meet demand, and a small plant would require moderate capital outlay. There is a possibility of using idle Government-owned magnesium plants for such purposes. The raw materials needed for vacuum thermal reduction would not have to be extremely pure, Director, with respect to the iron and calcium Content. A rock classification for drilling and boring is presented covering most equipment types and providing an estimation of the key parameters for operation, such as thrust and speed, and of performance such as penetration rate and bit life. Drilling and boring are significant and integral aspects of both the mining and heavy construction industries. Together these constitute over 20% of the G.N.P. Drilling and boring represent the most arduous mechanical processes performed in industry. Their misapplication quickly leads to equipment destruction, hazards, and to major delays. The classification is unified in two ways: 1) for a particular rock class several parameters can be estimated, 2) the classification integrates most excavating activities (i.e. digging, ripping and even blasting), and is derived from ground control. The rock classification provides a job property, based on fundamental and index properties, which yields quick and rough estimates of vital information. However it does not obviate the need for a more thorough analysis, and maintaining field records. BACKGROUND In order to adequately describe a drilling operation the conditions, activity, and equipment must be characterized. Of these the major independent variables are the conditions. Conditions focus on the geologic mass and also consider whether the site is surface or underground. O objetivo principal deste trabalho foi incorporar o resíduo de mármore no desenvolvimento de formulações de massas cerâmicas para obtenção de grês porcelanato. Foram preparadas quatro formulações da massa cerâmica variando-se as proporções de caulim, talco, feldspato, argila de queima clara e do resíduo de mármore nas misturas. Essas matérias-primas foram peneiradas na malha 200 mesh e as porcentagens para cada formulação foi misturada em moinho de bolas por 30 min. Os corpos de prova foram preparados em uma prensa uniaxial com pressão de 25 MPa e sinterizados em forno convencional nas temperaturas de 800°C, 900°C e 1.000°C, com patamar de 60 minutos e taxa de aquecimento de 10°C por minuto, verificando as propriedades das peças. Para obtenção de resultados foram realizados ensaios de absorção de água, retração linear nas peças sinterizadas, massa específica aparente e porosidade aparente, com o propósito de avaliar a variação de retração linear em determinada temperatura de acordo com a porcentagem de absorção de água. Foram realizados também os ensaios de flexão e microscopia eletrônica de varredura - (MEV). As composições estudadas apresentaram resultados satisfatórios dentro dos valores aceitáveis para o devido uso na indústria cerâmica.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous report3 prepared for the American Gas Association, the influence of washing coal on coke properties and on gas and by-product yields was discussed on the basis of answers to questionnaires sent to coke-oven superintendents and a review of the literature on the subject. This review indicated that the elimination of free impurities by cleaning coal improved coke quality by (a) reducing ash and sulphur, (b) decreasing clinker trouble in burning the coke, (c) diminishing cross fractures in the coke, resulting in greater resistance to breakage on handling, and less small coke and breeze, and (d) greater uniformity in chemical composition and physical properties of coke. Washing also reduced the sulphur in coke and gas and increased the yield of gas and by-products per ton of dry coal charged.This paper is supplementary to the previous report and presents some experimental data obtained with Pittsburgh bed coal from Pennsylvania and Mary Lee bed coal from Alabama.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSGrateful acknowledgment is made to F. The research reported here concerns ground control in multi-seam mining and relates mainly to the analysis of stress about multi-seam room and pillar mines. The two variables of most concern are distance between seams and alignment of pillars between seams. The first year results of the two year investigation apply to the development phase of mining when the extraction is typically less than 50 percent. The second year effort is concentrated on retreat mining and barrier pillar safety when the extraction is typically greater than 50%. The procedures in both cases are readily applicable to more than two seams. Although two seam mines are the most frequent type of multi-seam operations, because of the potential for three seam operations in the Western United States, a number of three seam development analyses are also presented. The results enable one to make a rapid assessment of stability of rooms and pillars during production and barrier pillar size during extraction of adjacent panels. In the event of low safety factors, more site-specific analyses can be undertaken.

"In California the history of tin mining began in Riverside County in 1853, with the discovery of the Temescal deposit. This deposit remained the only one with a production record until recent small shipments were made from Kern and San Bernardino Counties.According to the California State Division of Mines, Temescal's total output has been about 125 tons of tin, all of which was produced in 1891 and 1892. It was idle from 1892 to 1928.An extensive but unsuccessful development campaign carried on in 1928 and 1929 by the American Tin Corp. produced only half a ton of the metal, and the property again was idle until 1943, when an attempt to resume operations proved unsuccessful. After 1929 no production is recorded from California until 1944 end 1945, when small shipments of sorted ore from Kern County returned about 2 tons of tin and 1-1/3 tons was recovered from sorted ore and concentrates from San Bernardino County. The total output of tin from California has been less than 150 tons, and less than 4 percent of this was produced in the last 50 years, in spite of numerous attempts during that period to promote tin mines,So marked a scarcity of a metal essential in war makes any occurrence interesting. When some prospects were reported to the Bureau of Mines in July 1942, in a new field 10 miles east of Gorman, they were at once examined and the preliminary exploration by the owners closely followed. Eventually one was explored by bulldozing end diamond drilling as a joint project by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey.To supplement this joint project, the authors undertook independently a general survey of tin in California - a survey designed to check reported occurrences and to bring their status up to date. In this work, the 37 places described in the text and spotted on the accompanying map, (fig. 1) were visited end sampled. Although traces of tin were found in many pieces, nothing that suggested a tin mine was found anywhere, and it is difficult to base much hope for appreciable future tin production upon anything found thus far in California."

According to the classification of water conservation mining in shallow coal seams in China, when the ratio of the impermeable layer thickness to the mining height is less than 18, the mining belongs to the category of special water conservation, and the strip backfilling mining method is employed. This study is based on the geological conditions in northern Shaanxi. By analyzing the stability of the impermeable layer, the stability criterion of the impermeable layer was developed. The study also investigated the compositions and properties of the backfilling materials. The results show that reasonable subsidence of the impermeable layer is allowed during mining under the basic precondition (upward cracks and downward cracks are not connected).

Fully-grouted roof bolts comprise more than 80% of the primary roof supports used in U.S. coal mines. However, nearly 1,500 MSHA reportable, non-injury roof falls occur each year, and most of these are attributable to failure of the roof bolt system. Anchorage failure is one failure mechanism for fully-grouted bolts. As roof deformation works its way upward, the bolts can become heavily loaded near their upper ends. If the applied load exceeds the anchorage, the bolts will simply pull out. Research dating back 30 yrs indicates that this type of anchorage failure is most likely when the roof rock is weak, just where roof support is most critical. In soft shale or coal roof, the small amount of data available in the literature indicates that 20-30 in of resin anchorage may be required to achieve the full capacity of the bolt. In other words, the “full resistance zone” of a 60 in bolt may actually be just 30-40 in. Despite its potential importance, there is no widely accepted anchorage test for fully grouted bolts. Standard pull tests have sometimes been employed, but they provide no information on the anchorage near the top of the bolt. An alternative, first described more than 25 yrs ago in the U.S., is the short-encapsulation pull test (SEPT). With this test, the bolt is installed with only a short (1 ft or less) tube of resin. The urban environment presents special challenges for the design and construction of earth retention systems. Complications arising from difficult subsurface conditions are compounded by the presence of urban infrastructure and existing and prior construction. The proximity of adjacent structures as well as intense prior use can cause special concerns including the potential for archeological artifacts or contaminated ground or ground water. Utilities and structures may be particularly vulnerable to the effects of ground movement, dewatering and vibrations. Difficulty of access, congestion and limited work areas may severely restrict means and methods of construction. Dewatering may be limited or prohibited because of concerns for disposal of clean or contaminated water, depletion of aquifers, drawing of contaminants to the site or dewatering induced settlements.

"The Xstrata Nickel Raglan concentrator, located in Quebec’s Nunavik region, has been in operation since 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high-grade nickel ore, the plant’s current capacity is 1.3 million tonnes per year due to various optimization projects. In 2011 and 2012, the Metallurgical group, with assistance from BBA, updated and optimized the variables affecting SAG throughput in order to optimize process stability while maintaining maximum plant throughput. This project consisted of reviewing the control strategy and completely updating the pre-existing Fuzzy Logic controller. This paper describes the successful update of the controller including a complete revision of control rules, a new process control strategy and the integration of new process variables, most notably mill rotational speed. It will also show how this new approach has provided a simple and robust way of delivering both an increase in throughput while reducing process variability.INTRODUCTIONThe Xstrata Nickel Raglan Mine concentrator is located in Northern Quebec along the 62th parallel. It has been in operation since 1997 and was originally designed to treat 800,000 tonnes of ore annually. The Raglan Agreement held with the Makivik Corporation and the Inuit communities limits the annual tonnage of ore that can be processed at 1.32 million tonnes.The ore is processed in a 24 foot variable speed, semi-autogenous grinding mill (SAG). The conversion from Autogenous Grinding (AG) to SAG was completed in 2006. Before the ore is processed by the SAG, its size is analyzed by a Wipfrag camera that provides a granulometry estimate. A cone crusher reduces the SAG’s discharge screen’s oversize material. A 14 foot diameter ball mill ensures final grinding before the flotation stage.Many control strategies were used at the SAG over the past few years. Fuzzy Logic was first used in 2007 in order to control tonnage feed to the SAG. This first version only measured the value of the variables without taking into account their rate of change. Revisions were made over the course of the last few years to improve controller performance. Other variables were added such as slurry density and crusher Closed Side Setting (CSS). The previous revision of the Fuzzy Logic was done in 2009 with a review of the rules only."
