The last 12 months has seen the construction of the first Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM excavated tunnel in New Zealand on the Project Hobson sewer storage tunnel for Watercare Services Limited, with the concurrent excavation of the second EPB tunnel on the Rosedale Outfall project for North Shore City Council. Together these tunnels involve a total length of 6km and follow an 8 year pause in TBM activity in Auckland. TBM performance on these two projects is thus of significant interest as there are four major tunneling projects totaling over NZ$8B being planned for Auckland, in similar ground conditions. Auckland?s bedrock is a weak sandstone/siltstone (East Coast Bays Formation), subject to infilled paleovalleys. The geology in the region has been significantly influenced by volcanic activity; 49 volcanoes are present within 20km of the city centre. The paper describes the design and construction challenges for the projects, including TBM performance, ?sticky spoil? management, and risks associated with basalt lava flows and two paleovalleys. Watercare?s Project Hobson also saw the successful implementation of a Geotechnical Baseline Report?one of the first uses of this type of document in Australasia. Rosedale Outfall is designed for high internal water pressures with varying hydraulic flows, with the risk of exfiltration explicitly addressed.

Abosso Goldfields Limited has been optimizing the comminution circuit at the Damang Mine Operation for the treatment of 100% primary ore. The optimization process started at a base rate of 343 tph when treating primary crushed primary ore, and was increased to above 600 tph with partially crushed primary ore. Abosso Goldfields engaged Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) to assist with the optimization process in 2009 and the two companies have been working together since, to further refine the process. Continuous improvement was achieved through crushing circuit modifications, changes in operating processes and grinding control system utilization. This paper discusses the improvements developed for the increase in milling capacity and improvements in final product size.

"Geoscan is used for multi-elemental analysis of conveyed bulk materials in the minerals industry with proven performance and demonstrated paybacks of weeks or months in iron ore, manganese, copper, zinc-lead and phosphate industries. Geoscan-M measures continuously through the full bed depth and is unaffected by belt speed, particle size, layering, mineralogy and dust levels. Increments of typically two minutes are accurately measured and provide the plant operators with tonnage weighted results of contained elements. Measurement of the composition in real time enables prompt feedback to the mining operators and also feed forward to the process operators. Crushed ore increments can be diverted based on composition, such as diverting waste for disposal or marginal material to a stockpile for separate processing. Bulk sorting allows material to be placed into relevant stockpiles for subsequent blending to achieve consistency for process feed. Parameters used for decisions may be primary metal content, deleterious component content, other process parameter, or a combination of these. Process parameter may be the elemental ratio between critical components, e.g. Cu:S ratio, basicity, or the content of an “indicator” element (such as Si indicating material hardness). Benefits will be discussed based on case studies in copper and iron ore.IntroductionAs operators of process plants strive to remain competitive as capital and operating costs increase and commodity prices fluctuate, more focus has been directed at incremental performance improvements at incremental cost rather than major expansions to increase output. The philosophy of working smarter allows plants to adopt technologies proven in other industry sectors to minimise risk. This paper discusses one such technology that the minerals sector is adopting and has found to be safe, reliable and accurate with paybacks of weeks in most applications. New applications continue to be found and major benefits realised at various stages in the processing and handling of ores and products."

Provide improved permanent stoppings designed specifically for use in mines with large cross-sectional entries. Approach The large entry sizes in many mines, such as oil shale, salt, and limestone, make the conventional stopping construction techniques used in smaller opening mines unacceptable. The Bureau of Mines and Colorado Mining Association jointly sponsored a contract to design and test new or modified stopping concepts for these mines. The most promising concepts were then tested in an oil-shale mine having 30-foot-high by 55-foot-wide mine entry openings. All stopping designs tested were evaluated in terms of cost, air tightness, and resistance to blast damage.

Biomineralization of manganese on titanium condenser material exposed to seawater has been illustrated. Biom-ineralization occurs when the fouling components, namely, the microbes, are able to oxidize minerals present in water and deposit them as insoluble oxides on biofilm surfaces. Extensive biofilm characterization studies showed that an alarmingly large number of bacteria in these biofilms are capable of oxidizing manganese and are, thereby, capable of causing biomineralization on the condenser material exposed to seawater. This paper addresses studies on understanding the exact role of the microbes in bringing about oxidation of manganese. The kinetics of manganese oxidation by marine Gram-positive manganese oxidizing bacterium Bacillus spp. that was isolated from the titanium surface was studied in detail. Manganese oxidation in the presence of Bacil-lus cells, by cell free extract (CFE) and heat-treated cell free extract was also studied. The study confirmed that bacteria mediate manganese oxidation and lead to the formation of biogenic oxides of MnO2, eventually leading to biomineralization on titanium surface exposed to seawater.

Introduction After two decades of contraction and consolidation, the uranium industry has seen a recent major expansion. Rapidly increasing uranium prices and the ability to raise speculative capital in share markets worldwide have brought over 300 new participant companies into the uranium industry: “juniors” as they are known. These companies participated in a global land rush for known deposits as well as for prospective land positions in order to secure a “piece of the action” for their respective portfolios. Mostly publicly-traded companies, these “juniors” have captured the attention of world’s investing public with spectacular gains; as much as 1,000s of percent in less than four years. The initial phase is over, however, and these companies must now prove that they can be successful in exploration or production.

Repeated noise exposure and occupational hearing loss are common health problems across industries and especially within the mining industry. Large mechanized processes, blasting, grinding, drilling, and work that is often in close quarters put many miners at an increased risk of noise overexposure. In stone, sand, and gravel mining, noise is generated from a variety of sources, depending on the type of ore being mined as well as the final consumer product provided by that mine. Depending on the source of noise generation, different strategies to reduce and avoid that noise should be implemented. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated the noise profile at three operational surface stone, sand, and gravel mines. A-weighted sound level meter data as well as phase array beamforming data were collected throughout the mines in areas with high noise exposure or high personnel foot or vehicle traffic. Sound level meter data collected on a grid pattern was used to develop sound profiles of the working areas. These sound contour maps as well as phase array beamforming plots were provided to the mines as well as guidance to modify work areas or personnel traffic to reduce noise exposure.

The liquid crystal display (LCD) are currently known by its vast application in electro ? electronic devices, amongst them can be detached the devices of TV, laptops, electronic date, calculators and even though the mobile telephones (mobiles). The mobiles are changed more frequent of the TV for example, this happens due to the technology advance. With the constantly mobile exchange, the batteries, printed circuit board and liquid crystal display accumulation its become an environmental problem. To minimize the environmental impacts caused by mobile telephones residues are considered the segregation process of the LCDs main components, to goal to recover the recycle material. This process involves the use of treatment ore techniques with disc, hammers and balls mills. The process with best efficiency (about 98%) of LCD glass release was the hammers mill. The glass recovered can be used in the glass recycling and the sand substitution in the production of concrete blocks.

The Bureau of Mines, under Congressional mandate, conducted a mineral survey on the Park Range WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in 1984 and 1985. The WSA, located about midway between Tonopah and Ely, encompasses 47,268 acres. No mineral resources were delineated, nor were workings found, during the investigation. There has been, however, exploration in and near the north end of the study area. ASARCO is actively exploring a block of 41 claims for hot-spring type, low-grade, large-tonnage gold deposits. Their claim block is almost entirely in the study area. The Morey mining district, 7 miles southwest of the study area, produced silver and lesser amounts of gold and lead sporadically from the mid-1860's through the mid-1960's. The WSA is underlain by Tertiary rhyolitic and latitic volcanic rocks and by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The Paleozoic rocks have been faulted, silicified, brecciated, and hydrothermally altered, and have anomalous concentrations of precious metals and pathfinder elements. Additional exploration in the north part of the Park Range WSA may lead to delineation of gold resources.

RECENT interest in thermoelectric devices has been directed toward studies of the properties of thermoelectric materials of semiconducting solid compounds with little attention given to ionic and semiconducting liquids such as aqueous solutions, fused salts, and mattes. One type of thermoelectric system is the thermocell: a nonisothermal galvanic cell with two identical electrodes at different temperatures connected by an electrolyte bridge. An electromotive force, v, is generated which is a function of the electrode reactions and the properties of the electrolyte according to the Eastman' equation: where S* is the entropy change of the system arising from the electrode reactions and by heat transferred by ion migration and by thermal conduction. The quantity nF is the product of equivalents passed and Faraday's constant. A value of S* of 23.06 cal per "C is equivalent to 1 mv-Faraday per "C. The symbol, a, is used for dV/dT in analog to the See-beck coefficient of solid-state thermoelements. de Bethune2 has calculated the temperature coefficients of the electromotive force of a large number of nonisothermal aqueous cells from measurements on the nonisothermal temperature coefficients of the standard hydrogen electrode, combined with data on the isothermal temperature coefficients of half-cells tabulated in the literature. Values of these coefficients (a) in de Bethune's compilation ranged up to 3 mv per C. In particular he reported a value of +2.059 mv per "C at 25'C for the cell: Fe (aqueous, unit activity) (aqueous, unit activity) written for the hot-electrode reaction. The positive sign indicates that the hot electrode is positive (an "n-type thermocell"). In analog to a solid-state p-n system, it would be possible to couple two thermocells together to form a system in which the figure of merit could be calculated by adding the temperature coefficients according to the relationship described by offee:' where a is the Seebeck coefficient in volts per "C, p is the specific resistivity in ohm-cm, and K is the thermal conductivity in watts per cm "C. Even though ionic systems have rather high electrical resistivities compared with semiconducting and metallic systems, it was felt that a preliminary study of one ionic system should be made to establish some basis for evaluating the possibility of a p-n thermocell for energy conversion. Accordingly the Fe", Fe"' system was studied as a possible component for a p-n system. A glass system was constructed consisting of two vertical water-jacketed tubes connected by a horizontal tube, Fig. 1. Platinum-black electrodes 1 cm by 1 cm in dimension were inserted in each vertical tube with thermometers to register the electrode-compartment temperatures. The temperature of the electrode compartments was controlled by circulating water from thermostatted baths around the electrode compartments. The electromotive force of the cell was then read by a potentiometer for zero current as a function of the temperature of the hotter electrode. Current output of the cell for varying external loads was also measured. The cell resistance was measured by means of a bridge circuit with 10,000 cps signal and oscilloscope. Resistance measurements were converted to specific resistivity by calibrating the cell with a solution of known conductivity.

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Information organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 829), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Minerals Information activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

"In 2001, the Catholic University of Chile undertook a maintenance benchmarking study of six open pit copper mines having mill capacities varying between 18,000 t/d and 156,000 t/d, and collectively responsible for 58% of Chilean copper production. This paper describes the methodology used to conduct the study, as well as the overall results. Key performance indices were selected to measure the effectiveness, efficiency, and development of the maintenance process. Using a balanced scorecard philosophy, these indicators were divided into client satisfaction, financial, internal process, and learning and growth indices.Maintenance was found, on average, to be responsible for 44% of mine production costs. Percentage planned maintenance of equipment fleets was found to be low by world standards, averaging 35%, 56%, and 44%, respectively, for blasthole drill, shovel, and haul truck fleets. Fleet availabilities were found to be significantly influenced by the percentage of planned maintenance achieved, while maintenance cost per equipment was found to decrease non-linearly with increases in percentage planned maintenance. Investment in technical training (including planned maintenance practice) was found to be low by global standards. The paper concludes that fleet availability and maintenance costs in Chilean open pit operations could be considerably improved by improving and/or developing maintenance planning standards, and investing in training personnel in planned maintenance techniques"

Cemented rock fill (CRF) is often used to support open stope voids. This allows for the full recovery of ore while achieving global mine stability. In such cases, the exposed CRF masses require adequate compressive strength and stiffness to resist the forces and limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or development mining waste. This means that conventional laboratory samples cannot be readily used to determine the laboratory strength. Consequently, a research project was undertaken to determine the influence of sample size on uniaxial compressive strength. This paper presents the results from CRF samples that were prepared using the same mix design and then cast into moulds with diameters of 150, 240, 300 and 400 mm. The laboratory testing also allowed a better understanding of the effect of particle size distribution upon the overall strength of a rock fill mass. The laboratory results were compared to a database of large-scale results from the testing of fill masses from a number of mine sites.CITATION:Cordova, M, Saw, H and Villaescusa, E, 2016. Introduction The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was passed in 1977 to put an end to the uneven environmental standards and enforcement established by various coal mining states in the US. One year after passage, the Secretary of Interior was directed to promulgate permanent program regulations implementing Title V provisions of the Act. These regulations were to form the basis for state regulatory programs under the Act and to allow states to assume primary regulatory responsibility. To implement the underground mining provision of the Act, the Secretary is directed in section 516(a) of the Act to promulgate rules. But they must take into consideration the differences between surface and underground coal mining. The regulations developed by the Secretary in 1979, with respect to subsidence control, included: • a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; • substantive provisions establishing performance standards for subsidence control; and • provisions providing for the prohibition of mining under perennial streams, impoundments larger than 24.6 dam3 (20 acre ft), and certain public facilities and urban areas. Industry challenged the Secretary's regulations implementing the subsidence control provisions. The litigation was consolidated with all other challenges to the permanent program regulations. (Permanent Surface Mining Regulation Litigation, Civil Action No. 79-1144; D. D.C., May 16, 1980.) In two opinions dealing with the multitude of issues raised by both industry and environmental groups, the US District Court of the District of Columbia ruled against industry. It upheld the promulgated subsidence control provisions. The US Court of Appeals stayed the appeals pending the agency's review and revision of its regulations. The regulatory reform was conducted in accordance with the order from the Secretary of Interior and the President in 1981. As a result, the subsidence control regulation was revised, reproposed, and finalized in June 1983 (Federal Register). This regulation, along with others, was again challenged by environmental groups and industry. On Oct. 1, 1984, the court, after finding the Secretary's reading of the Act reasonable, upheld the 1983 subsidence regulation except for one section. On Feb. 21, 1985, in accordance with the court's ruling, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) suspended a portion of 30 CFR 817.121 (c)(2) concerning the damage correction requirement for structures or facilities and reproposed it on July 8, 1985 (Federal Register). In conjunction with a request for public comments, OSM now also seeks comments on the omission from the 1983 rule of the requirement in the 1979 rule regarding a presubsidence survey and monitoring of damage to structures. Technical issues related to subsidence regulations The subsidence regulations of June 1, 1983, consist mainly of two parts: a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; and substantive provisions establishing performance standards. "MMG (Minerals and Metals Group) operates the LXML Sepon’s mineral processing facility located 40 kilometers north of the town of Sepon, in the Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR. The Sepon copper plant produces 70,000 tons/year of LME grade A copper cathode using leachautoclave- SX/EW-flotation technology (Baxter et al., 2003). Pyrite recovery in the flotation circuit is critical to the operation, as it is used to generate acid and soluble ferric ion for the leach circuit. Low pyrite recovery has been an on-going challenge in the flotation circuit. Final tailings characterization work done by Ian Wark Research Institute (Bassell et al., 2006) showed that the pyrite losses to the tailings are made up of a combination of coarse liberated particles and finer particles that have been coated by clay fines.In December of 2005, a joint Cytec-MMG technical program was initiated to address the pyrite recovery issue. A series of diagnostic tests were performed in the Cytec Stamford Research Facility using synthetic plant water showing that the collector was precipitating as a metal salt and was unavailable for mineral attachment. The tests also identified several collector chemistries that would likely be robust in the low pH (< 1), high dissolved metal ion environment and will not complex with metal ions in solution. With the support of the Sepon on-site engineers, an extensive, successful laboratory program was completed, which was subsequently followed by on-plant testing that showed a step wise improvement in pyrite recovery.INTRODUCTIONLow pyrite recovery has been an ongoing problem in the flotation circuit at Sepon. Sulfur recovery (indirect measure of pyrite) was improved from 40% to 65%-75% in mid-2005 when on site laboratory work confirmed that AERO® 8045 Promoter was a more effective collector then AERO® 407 Promoter. However, sulfur recoveries above 65% could never be achieved. Sepon requested the Ian Wark Research Institute to complete a surface analysis study using Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy to determine if clay coated pyrite played a role. It was concluded that the pyrite losses to the tailings are made up of a combination of coarse (+ 100µm) liberated particles and finer (-74µm) particles that have been coated by clay fines. The majority of the losses appear to be due to the former. In December of 2005, a series of diagnostic tests were performed in Stamford using synthetic plant water in order to identify what chemistries would likely be robust in the slimy low pH and high dissolved metal ion solution environment. Results showed that several chemistries would not complex with ferric, ferrous or copper in solution and therefore should perform well in the Sepon flotation. The incumbent collector, AERO® 8045 Promoter was complexing with metal ions in solution. This resulted in the collector not being available for adsorption onto pyrite."

A program was conducted to determine whether sufficient quantities of the flame retardant, ammonium phosphate, could be incorporated in a water-based foam solution to prevent or delay reignition (burnback) without. significant degradation of foam properties. Up to 20% of mono and diammonium phosphate was added .to d high expansion foam solution. This mixture was applied as a high expansion foam to burning wood and coal samples. The effect of this mixture on burnback was laboratory tested by placing the wood or coal sample in front of a radiant panel. It was found that diammonium phosphate levels of 20% by weight prevented reignition without degrading foam properties. A field test was then conducted using a 20%, diammonium phosphate mixture and a control with no phosphate on a wood crib fire. The experimental foam did extinguish the crib fire faster than the control as evidenced by the smoke from the crib. However neither crib reignited.

Eramet and Tinfos are two producers of manganese alloys in Norway, which have worked hard for several decades to improve both the internal and external environment. Furnaces producing ferro- and silico- manganese alloys generate large amounts of off-gas that contains substantial amounts of dust, heavy metals and organic by-products. The dust is separated from the gas in venturi scrubbers by washing with water. The water is cleaned and recirculated, and the surplus water coming from moisture in the raw materials, is discharged to the adjacent fjords after further treatment. Emission figures show that the discharge of suspended solids, manganese, zinc and PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) have been reduced substantially over the last three decades as a result of process improvements and installation of state of the art environmental control measures. The two plants were the first world wide to install mercury cleaning of the off-gases from the furnaces. Mercury emission reduction has exceeded 90%. Concerning other environmental issues, such as utilisation of off-gases for energy recovery and chemical purposes, both plants have achieved good results. Major effort in the environmental work has come from the plants themselves, but other players like FFF, The Norwegian Ferroalloy Producers Research Association, and SFT, The Norwegian Pollution Control Authority, have contributed to the achieved results.

The only mining activity in Belize during 1976 involved the production of construction aggregates, which were used domestically. A comprehensive ordinance regulating mineral prospecting and mining was proposed during the year. Under the ordinance, which would supersede all grants and titles, ownership and control of all minerals except petroleum would be vested in the Government. Exxon Corp. entered into an agreement with three oil companies to achieve a majority interest in nine oil prospecting leases covering 1 million acres, mostly offshore Belize. The agreement was with Weatherford International Inc. which had 30% interest in the leases, Ajax Petroleum Co. with 40% interest, and Canadian Superior Oil Ltd, with 24% interest. A new entity, Esso Ventures Inc., was established to be responsible for conducting extensive geophysical operations and drilling an exploratory well offshore Belize.
