"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Tifalmin porphyry copper district is located in the Star Mountains roughly 35 km north-east of the Ok Tedi mine. The district is a cluster of temporally and geochemically related porphyry copper deposits and their associated skarns. It covers an area of roughly 10 × 6 km and comprises at least three intrusions (Olgal, Futik and Kum Kom) where drilling has demonstrated the presence of porphyry copper mineralisation, and another three intrusions (Rattatat, Unfin and Pad 48) where porphyry copper mineralisation is strongly suggested by surface investigations and geochemical or geophysical signatures.Copper and gold mineralisation was first discovered in the area in the 1960s as part of the regional exploration program by Kennecott that located Ok Tedi. The mineralisation is associated with poly-phase porphyritic diorites, quartz diorites and tonalites that intrude the Upper Eocene to Middle Miocene Darai limestone and underlying Cretaceous to Eocene Feing Group. Radiometric K-Ar and U-Pb zircon ages cluster between 4 and 2 Ma for both the mineralised and post-mineral intrusions. In addition to porphyry-type mineralisation, variable amounts of calc-silicate and/or magnetite skarn occur near the contact of most of the intrusions. Mineralisation in the Olgal and Futik porphyries occurs as chalcopyrite replacement of mafic minerals and in a stockwork of micro-veinlets. Mineralisation mostly occurs in the intrusions but is also observed in hornfelsed siltstones and sandstones of the Feing Group on the southern margin of the Olgal intrusive body. Quartz veining is uncommon. Secondary magnetite is commonly associated with the highest copper and gold grades. Sericitic alteration is most prominent in the mineralised hornfels. Structurally, the area is dominated by syn- to post-mineralisation thrusting from the north. At least one of the deposits (Olgal) appears to be truncated at depth by a thrust fault.CITATION:Queen, L D, 2015. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting research to optimize the design and utilization of mine roof support systems. An objective of these efforts is to evaluate the mechanical and structural responses of various mine roof support systems under simulated load conditions in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. Underground studies are also made to evaluate the in situ behavior of support structures. The purpose of this report is to document practical applications for longwall face and gate road supports that have resulted from these studies. This report is not intended to be an all-inclusive manual on every aspect of support utilization, but it does provide a comprehensive assessment of practical considerations relating to the mechanical and structural behavior of these support systems. Forty-six recommendations are made to provide assistance to mine operators in the testing, selection, and utilization of longwall face and gate road supports. Many of these recommendations offer innovative solutions to everyday problems faced by mining personnel in the control of ground in longwall mining.

The paper deals with new approach for measurement and evaluation of chemical microheterogeneity of elements in polycomponent metallic systems (i. e. steels, Ni-alloys). The method is based on the original mathematical model for determination of distribution curves of dendritic segregation of selected elements and on the original mathematical model for determination of the effective partition coefficients of these elements in the structure of analyzed alloy. Application of the method at research of chemical heterogeneity of continuously cast steel slab is also presented. The original results of measurement of dendritic microheterogeneity of eight elements (Al, Si, P, S, Ti, Cr, Mn and Fe) in structure of nine zones of a transversal section of slab are given.

This report describes the results of investigations into four specific areas related to trolley wire power distribution systems in coal mines. These are: 1. Partially insulated (shielded) trolley wire 2. High-speed insulator fault detectors 3. Dual-wire trolley systems 4. Insulator failure indicators. Prototype devices or designs were developed in each area. In addition, a brief survey was made in an attempt to assess the Future of mine trolley systems, and data was collected and reviewed in an attempt to analyze the nature of trolley wire related accidents. Other options for decreasing the risks associated with trolley systems that arose .during the study are briefly described in appendices. These include insulating equipment and miners from return and/or energized conductors and use of a segmented trolley wire with local control of current delivering capability.

"The Sudbury area environment became drastically altered commencing in 1871 with lumbering, repeated fires and early open roasting operations from 1887 to 1929. These combined factors had such a pronounced effect that approximately 24 square miles were totally denuded of any vegetation and 87 square miles were semi-barren to somewhat stressed.The two nickel producing companies in the area have reduced the sulphur dioxide emissions considerably over the years. Falconbridge Limited, alone, reduced sulphur dioxide emissions by 77% from 1971 to 1984.These reductions have resulted in improvements to the air, soil, lake and vegetation quality in the Sudbury area.INTRODUCTIONThe Sudbury area environment became drastically altered commencing in the 1870's with lumbering, repeated fires and early open roasting operations from 1888 to 1929. These combined factors had such a pronounced effect on the Sudbury environment that approximately 24 square miles (64 sq. km.) were totally denuded of any vegetation and 87 square miles (225 sq. km.) were semi-barren.Over the years, the Sudbury area environment has improved considerably. This has been due to emission cutbacks by both Inco Metals and Falconbridge Limited, coupled with industry, government and community reclamation programs. Before the improvements are discussed, a better understanding of the historical degradation is required."

Groundwater inflows during construction pose one of the greatest risks to the successful completion of tunnel projects. Inflows can result in safety concerns, difficulty in mining and ground support, impact sensitive environmental habitats, create surface settlement and increase costs. Adequately planned pre-excavation grouting programs benefit both the Owner and Contractor in reducing risks and controlling project costs and potential schedule delays. This paper outlines strategic guidelines for assessment of site conditions for pre-excavation grouting hard rock tunnels. It also describes the design of pre-excavation grouting programs with respect to project requirements.

The consequences of rock blasting with explosives are directly related to the accuracy of drilling and, because they have an effect on fragmentation and ground level, they should be controlled to ensure a problem free production, increase work safety and reduce environment impact. Safety control is one of the most important processes in detonation, since it can compromise the worker security on site and, eventually, neighboring communities. Due to the technology advancements, it is possible to build a hole deviation control device with “of the shelf” parts, and for that reason the authors decided to evaluate the possibility of measuring hole deviation by creating a portable prototype using an electronic sensor capable of measuring the acceleration on objects, that is, to measure the own acceleration of a system, known as "accelerometer" and a micro-controller to handle and treat data. The main idea behind this paper is to validate the power of the Euler method, given the stepping limitations of the sensor and micro controller in order to reproduce of the hole shape. A case study was carried out, comparing the measurements of borehole deviations made by a traditional equipment and the prototype. A mobile application was also created in order to recover and treat and display the data to the user. For validation of the prototype, several holes were measured using the two devices. A residue analysis was used to validate the data obtained. After analyzing and confirming the effectiveness of the new equipment, the normality tests prove a symmetric distribution with null expected residual mean and minimum variance. Consequently, the accuracy of the prototype is evidenced. Thus, the authors aspire to emphasize the potential of using these sensors allied to a traditional numerical method for analysis of hole deviation.

No blast evaluation is complete without fragmentation measurements which until now were inaccurate, costly, time consuming and created delays in production. “WipFrag.s”is a fully automated PC based fragmentation analysis system that uses digital photo analysis techniques to measure broken rock. Fragmentation can be measured in minutes using compact videocameras for image acquisition. Even subtle changes in rack quality can be detected providing the information necessary for pattern optimization, explosives evaluation, timing selection, benchmarking and blast model validation.

This study provides quantitative data on vein distributions within seven selected epithermal systems, four deposits hosted predominantly in rhyolitic rocks: Ohui, Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Komata, and three major deposits mainly hosted in andesite: Martha Hill, Golden Cross and Karangahake. The technique of fractal analysis was used to help quantify vein distribution patterns. The fractal dimensions (D) obtained are related to the number of veins per metre, the degree of vein clustering, and vein thickness. An increase in any of these tends to increase the fractal dimension.   It is the relative relationship of these parameters that is important for the characterisation of vein distributions, and the comparison of different deposits. Within the same systems, the rhyolites are characterised by lower vein thickness and vein density, but have a higher degree of vein clustering compared to the andesites. Sections that are deeper and more centrally located within the epithermal system and/or close to major structures tend to have a greater degree of vein clustering, higher average vein thickness and density, and higher thickness to density ratios. This depth control is most pronounced in epithermal gold-silver systems because they have formed at shallow crustal levels where physico-chemical conditions change drastically both vertically and laterally. In addition to lithological and structural control at vein scale, deposit scale structure is of great importance in the deposition of economic mineralisation. Large open vein structures capable of sustaining high fluxes of hydrothermal fluid, favourable for the formation of large, high-grade gold deposits, are best developed in andesite sequences.

Hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) affects industrial workers exposed to long term hand-transmitted vibration from powered-tools. Peripheral neuropathy is a major component of the symptom complex of HAVS. Long term exposure to vibration causes myelin damage in peripheral nerves and reduces nerve conduction velocities in rats1. This study addresses the effects of acute vibration at constant acceleration of 49 m/s2 on myelinated fibers in peripheral nerves in Sprague-Dawley male rats using the ‘rat-tail vibration model,’ which simulates hand-transmitted vibration2. Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats (~300 g) were assigned to vibration groups: 1 hr continuous vibration at 60 Hz; 4 hr continuous exposure at frequencies of 30, 60, 120 or 800 Hz; immediate and 24 hr following a 4-hr cumulative exposure of continuous and intermittent vibration at 60 Hz. Unanesthetized rats were restrained in cages on a nonvibrating platform with their tails placed on a vibrating stage accelerated by a B&K motor type 4809 and vibrated. Intermittent vibration was delivered in bouts of 10 min vibration alternating with 5 min rest periods repeated over 6 hr. Sham controls were restrained without vibration. After vibration exposure, the rats were anaesthetized, and the ventral nerve trunks from the proximal tail segment 7 were fixed in glutaraldehyde, embedded in epon-araldite and sectioned at 0.5 µm thickness and stained with toludine-blue for morphological quantitative analysis. The total number of myelinated axons in each cross-section of the nerve was counted using the Image J software. Myelin damage was identified by focal increase in area and intensity of toludine-blue staining and unraveling of the myelin sheath. Statistical analysis for comparing sham and the different vibration groups was done using Dunnett’s test. Animal treatment and all surgical procedures were approved by the institutional review board and compiled with the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act. Results The rats tolerated continuous vibration very well and exhibited no behavioral signs of stress. When exposed to intermittent vibration, there was increased vocalization, a startle reflex at the beginning of each bout of vibration, deposition of porphyrin around the eyes and transient hypersensitivity to touch.

In the north of the Netherlands, in the environment of Harlingen, an industrial waste incinerator was installed in 2011. The population in the region is concerned about adverse health effects related to possible emission of dioxins. This study compares the relative merit and reliability of four sampling approaches aimed at quantifying the possible pollution patterns surrounding the incinerator: short-term versus long-term isokinetic flue gas sampling, spatial sampling of grasses and a novel approach developed by the Toxicowatch Foundation, based on local composite sampling of ten eggs from backyard chickens (local area pollution load averaging by accumulating bio-entities). Based on the latter approach results of a new analytical bioassay, DR CALUX®, from 15 locations near Harlingen harbour show distinct above-threshold dioxin levels in the environs of the incinerator. Currently only short-term flue gas sampling is mandated by the authorities; based hereupon, under normal operating conditions, the incinerator appears to be compliant with emission standards. This short-term sampling scheme is seriously flawed, however, in that it only demands one continuous 12-hour sampling period per annum – an extreme grab sampling transgression in the time domain. In starkest possible contrast, significantly elevated dioxins emissions were measured in flue gas during events of unstable combustion conditions by continuous long-term measurements. The dioxin congener patterns from long-term flue gas sampling show similar patterns as the congeners found in backyard chicken eggs and grass, evidence that elevated dioxins in eggs is due to emissions from the incinerator. These results make it mandatory to perform long-term, continuous measurements for all sources where similar high-temperature combustion/emission processes take place. Backyard chicken eggs are a prevalent regional bio-accumulating sample type in rural and agricultural regions, which is relevant to air pollution emission monitoring. There are interesting relationships between this type of sampling bio-sensors and the special bioassay DR CALUX® features, which, although quite outside traditional contexts, never-the-less all can be well understood in the context of the Theory of Sampling. We venture to unravel the complex interactions between correct and incorrect sampling errors and the extraordinary complicated analytical issues involved in monitoring and source tracking using accumulating bio-sensors. Cross-belt samplers are designed to sample particulate material in processing plants, usually when there is no space to install a conventional linear falling stream sampler. Most of the available cross-belt samplers are mounted on the top of conveyor belts, and remove each increment from a loaded moving conveyor with a 360° rotation of an open faced cutter, in a plane perpendicular to the material flow. Despite the practicality of this equipment and the fact that it occupies very little space in the plant, cross-belt samplers are well known for collecting biased samples, especially due to the increment extraction error. Sampling consultants around the world tend to condemn this sampling equipment, claiming that it is incapable of collecting the fine material from the bottom part of the load, and, since the sampling probability is not uniform for all fragments and depends on its position in the stream, this kind of sampler generates biased samples and its use should be avoided. Furthermore, the greater the segregation effect between particles, the larger the bias. However, some plants, whose initial design did not plan for the installation of a falling stream sampler, must rely on cross-belt samples for process control and reconciliation. For the past years, sampling equipment manufacturers have been putting effort in modifying the cross-belt sampler design in order to comply with the principles of correct sampling. Changes to the cutter material, shape, position, speed and movement in relation to the material flow have been made, and are continually being tested for different types of ore with various chemical and physical characteristics. Three properties in the Tuolumne River RARE II area, the Eagle Bluff Mine (lode) and the Indian Creek Bar and Bossy Bar Prospects (placer), have identified subeconomic gold resources (table 1). Nineteen other properties have potential for gold resources. Adjacent to the study area, five properties have identified mineral resources, and nine others have potential for resources. Properties having high-grade zones (shoots), but licking enough tonnage to be classified as resources, are listed in table 2. Gold, in lode and placer deposits, is the principal mineral commodity in the Toluene River study area. Ten properties within the RARE II boundary have gold-rich zones or shoots; they range in size from 12 to 2,500 tons and in average grade from 0.09 to 0.97 oz gold per ton.

This work concerns the removal of zinc(II) and COD by means of sawdust obtained as a by-product from locally used wood. The zinc(II) and COD removal study has been carried out batchwise where the influence of physico-chemical key parameters such as tree species, pH value of solution, temperature and contacting time and dosage of adsorbent have been considered. The maximum percent removal was attained at pH 9 all for Zn(II) and COD after about 60 min. The adsorbent can be effectively desorption using 0.1 M HCl. The experimental results showed that ion exchange maybe the major adsorption mechanisms for binding the divalent metal ions to the sawdust. Sawdust was a potential adsorbent for the removal of Zn(II) from the effluent of electroplating industry.

A change of support model consists of a procedure to change a stationary histogram at a small data scale to represent a larger scale; typically a distribution of sample drill-hole data is changed to represent a chosen selective mining unit (SMU) scale. Most grade variables average arithmetically. Thus, the mean stays the same for different scales, and the variance changes according to well-established theory using average variogram values. The longstanding challenge has been to predict how the shape of the histogram changes. The discrete gaussian model is widely used because it appears reasonable and introduces few artifacts; there are no artificial minimum/maximum values and the target mean and variance are reproduced exactly. The resulting distribution shape, however, is strongly dependent on a multivariate gaussian distribution. The authors generalize the approach by taking advantage of a property of the isofactorial model, which allows one to specify where the random function falls on the spectrum between a low-entropy mosaic model and a maximum-entropy diffusion model. A measure of dissemination (MD) is computed using a ratio of the madogram and the variogram. The change of support algorithm is developed that uses a variable measure of dissemination (VMD) that is easily calculated and fit to data from the deposit. The resulting VMD change of support model is very flexible to represent different mineralization styles encountered in practice; global predictions of recoverable reserves are more accurate and decision-making is improved. A number of real examples are shown to demonstrate the approach.

Enhancement of Energy Efficiency in Fine Grinding of Copper Sulfide Minerals Using a Pilot-Scale Stirred Media Mill - IsaMill The mineral liberation size of run of mine ores has dramatically reduced over recent years. As a result, the demand for fine grinding which is the most energy-intensive form of grinding has markedly increased in the minerals industry. Furthermore, the fine grinding costs increase exponentially with decreasing product particle size. As a result of the increased energy requirement for fine grinding, it is desirable to optimise fine grinding processes such as stirred media milling (ie IsaMill) to enhance energy efficiency, throughput and the product fineness. In the present study, the influence of slurry rheology, grinding media type and grinding media-to-feed size ratio on energy efficiency in a pilot-scale IsaMill was investigated under certain industrially relevant pulp processing conditions. It was shown that a critical rheological state existed, below which the energy required to achieve an 80 per cent passing (ie P80) 20 ¦m product size was unaffected by shear rheology (ie apparent viscosity and shear yield stress) whilst above which the grinding energy required increased dramatically with increasing shear rheology. Colorado River sand (3.35 mm) showed higher energy efficiency than MT1 ceramic media (2.5 mm) for a target P80 of 20 ¦m in the solids concentration range of 38 to 55 per cent by weight, but the former experienced more than four times the wear rate of the later. The high wear rate of the Colorado River sand may be due to its much lower hardness. For feeds with an 80 per cent passing (ie F80) 70 to 110 ¦m, 2.0 or 2.5 mm MT1 media appeared to be more energy efficient than 3.5 mm MT1 media whilst a media-to-feed size ratio of 41 to 53 is applicable for ~50 ¦m (ie F80) feeds for efficient grinding.

Automatic Charging and Stoking Machines for use at ferroalloy furnaces are in operation for more than 20years. Dango & Dienenthal Maschinenbau GmbH (short: DDS) has developed several machine generations. Today advanced solutions help to achieve better charging and stoking results to minimize cost and to improve the working environment around the furnaces. Three different alternatives can be considered: Rail-mounted solution The machine(s) travel(s) on an overhead monorail to one or several furnaces and is locked in the desired working position from where charging and stoking is performed. Mobile solution This machine travels on the charging platform and is also locked at the respective working position to perform charging and stoking. Automation of a standard mobile charging and stoking machine A standard charging and stoking machine can be adapted for automation. A reliable navigation system is included. Charging and stoking is performed with the moving machine. Advantage versus other solutions: considerable lower investment cost and possibility to upgrade the mobile charging and stoking machine for later automation. Overall, automatic charging and stoking can save up to 10 per cent of the specific smelting energy. A better and more consistent furnace operation can be achieved. Different programs are used to cope with different furnace conditions and changing raw materials. All machine movements can be recorded and correlated to other furnace parameters. Working environment on the charging platform is greatly improved.

"Some non-flotation chemistries are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust. Since the dosage levels are generally not very large, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect a specific chemical has on the productivity of the flotation circuit. Hudbay and Ashland Water Technologies developed a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5 ppm to 500 ppm). Laboratory results indicate that this protocol helps to predict the potential interference that a particular chemistry will have on the flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONFrom a chemical perspective, flotation is a very complex system involving more than the reagents used for flotation. Along with collectors, frothers, modifiers, suppressants and activators, there can be antiscalants for water treatment, dust suppressants used in the mining process, residual flocculants from recycled thickener overflows, grinding aids, and many other types of chemicals that are added upstream of a flotation circuit. Although these other chemicals are usually used at very low doses, it is important to know if they affect the flotation process detrimentally in the event of a spill or a build up from recycled water.Laboratory flotation testing of these chemicals characterizes their effects, but testing at expected doses in the float can mask the effects of the chemicals in the plant. Also, simple tests that do not measure the kinetics of flotation do not reveal the effects the other chemicals have on the flotation circuit. Thus, a new flotation protocol was needed to expose the full effects of chemical additives and to assist in choosing the chemical with the lowest potential for a negative effect.FLOTATION KINETICSMeasuring recovery kinetics in a laboratory flotation cell is a well-established procedure: analyzing concentrates taken in a timed sequence to determine the recovery rate of individual cells in a flotation circuit. The recovery from the early flotation cells are a true measurement of how well a flotation chemical is performing. The Goat Rocks RARE II further planning areas contain no known mineral resources and have very low mineral potentials. County mining records show only one mining claim area; however, no mineralized material was found at the described location. Andesite suitable for building stone may be present, but similar material can be quarried more economically elsewhere. Several anthracite coal prospects are near the area, but the likelihood of finding an economic deposit of coal or other fuel is very low.
