Several final pits in the Seneca No. 1 Surface Coal Mine were abandoned in the 1960's without king reclaimed. In addition, a progressive landslide aggravated by the abandoned mine land conditions was threatening a county mad and private property. An AML-funded project to stabilize the landslide and reclaim the final pits was completed in 1986 for the Colorado Division of Mines and Geology (formerly Colorado Mine Land Reclamation Division). The site was visited after ten growing seasons. The land is stable and the vegetation re-establishment is strong. Volunteer native plant species are now invading the reclaimed sites.

Nearly 4,800 mining professionals and exhibitors occupying 580 booths attended the 2000 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit, Feb. 28-March 1, in Salt Lake City, UT. The technical program included80 sessions and four specialty symposia: bulk material handling, control 2000, minor elements 2000 and plant operaters. Meeting highlights included the keynote session. Executive shared their perspectives on pivotal issues and approaches to address the challenges of the new millennium. SME has begun planning for its 2001 Annual Meeting, Feb. 26-28, in Denver, CO. Fires in underground coal mines are persistent problems anywhere in the world that coal is mined. Coal fires pose safety and health hazards in the form of mine subsidence, loss of energy reserves, destruction of property and surface improvements, and air pollution. In 1995, the US Bureau of Mines (US-BM), in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (CDMG),entered into a contract with Goodson & Associates Inc. (GAI) to design and field test the effectiveness of a new foamed grout technology called ThermoCell. GAI is a Lakewood, CO geotechnical and mining reclamation engineering firm. The company developed ThermoCell to control and extinguish underground coal fires. The viability of the special grout and the technology of application were established during a full-scale field demonstration at the abandoned IHI Coal Mine fire, near Rifle, CO. Following acquisition of additional funding by CDMG in 1999, Goodson returned to the site in April to continue the grouting to fully extinguish the IHI fire.

A cement, in the broad sense, is any substance which will cause various materials to adhere to each other. Clay was probably the first material to be used by man as a cement or binding agent. Water occurs in or is mixed with the clay to make it plastic, so that it can be formed in place. The sun and air remove the water from the clay and on drying strength is developed. The clays unless fired are not too resistant to water, therefore, their use is best when restricted to dry areas. Gypsum used as a cementitious material is not the subject of this paper, but its use dates back thousands of years. Gypsum mortars were used by the Egyptians in building such massive masonry structures as the pyramids. The Egyptian mortar consisted of a mixture of sand with burned gypsum (of an impure type of 81.5 per cent calcium sulphate and 9.5 per cent calcium carbonate) for the cementitious material. The burning of this type of cementitious material took place at relatively low temperature. These burning reactions will be covered later when the dehydration of gypsum is discussed. The setting of the partially dehydrated gypsum is considered to be crystallization from a supersaturated solution which deposits crystals of dihydrate (gypsum). In low water-content mixes, the interlocking of the needle-like crystals helps to produce higher strengths. Slaked lime made from limestone burned at higher temperatures (1648 F is generally considered as the calcining temperature, although under certain conditions incipient calcination will take place at 1250 F) is another early-period cementitious material. During slaking with water, a colloidal or amorphous hydrated lime is formed. When it is allowed to dry, it hardens and develops low strengths. On exposure to the carbon dioxide of air in the presence of some moisture, carbon dioxide is adsorbed and part of the calcium hydroxide is converted to calcium carbonate. Structures in which a lime mortar is used continue to grow in strength as this reaction proflesses. Hydrated lime has the disadvantage of not setting under water.

O impacto das atividades do setor de mineração sobre o meio ambiente tem levado a estudos visando, tanto à utilização racional dos recursos naturais, quanto o tratamento de efluentes gerados durante os processos. A caracterização de efluentes é uma etapa importante, podendo apontar erros nos processos de beneficiamento, parâmetros em desacordo com a legislação ambiental e guiar etapas de desenvolvimento de técnicas do tratamento. Este trabalho consiste na caracterização de um efluente da etapa filtragem de uma mineradora de minério de ferro do quadrilátero ferrífero comparando os valores encontrados com as exigências da norma CONAMA 357/2005 e 430/2011, de forma a enquadrá-los na categoria de águas doces classe 1 e de lançamento de efluentes. O pH encontrado (9,8), turbidez (2133 NTU) e sólidos sedimentáveis (28mL/L), estão fora dos padrões permitidos e mostram grandes problemas em relação aos sólidos presentes na amostra. O diâmetro médio das partículas (8,54µm), indicou a predominância de partículas ultrafinas de difícil sedimentação. Os elementos majoritários Al, Fe, P e S, 0,296; 1,6; 0,218 e 26,5 mg/L, respectivamente, também apresentaram valores acima do permitido para água doce classe I. As análises indicaram que o efluente necessita de tratamento prévio para posterior descarte.

Since 1985, the Sunshine Mining Company has used a patented nitric-sulfuric acid pressure leaching system for production of silver and copper from a refractory sulfide ore body. To better understand this novel process, a program of lab scale testing was undertaken to quantify the effect of system variables on silver recovery. Some of the factors studied include temperature, agitation, acidity, vessel pressure, particle size, percent solids and oxidizer amount. In turn, this knowledge will be applied in actual plant practice to upgrade reaction time, increase concentrate throughput, raise silver recovery and lower reagent costs. A discussion of plant process changes resulting from lab scale testing is included.

At 1090°C the scale formed OH Mn is highly, irregular due to blistering and sintering, This is a second cause of faster oxidation Since much of the blistered oxide does not participate as part of the protective layer. The oxide phases that form at different times depend on the degree to which the surface metal has become depleted, in manganese by preferential oxidation. PREVIOUS work has demonstrated that the oxide scales formed on chromium steels at high temperature consist of both spinel and rhombohedra1 phases and may contain considerably more manganese, especially in the spinel phase, than is present initially in the alloy.' It has further been observed that a binary Fe-26 Cr alloy scaled less rapidly than an equivalent commercial steel and formed no spinel.' However, it is not established if manganese in chromium alloys actually promotes formation of spinel nor if it affects oxidation resistance. It seemed expedient to try to evaluate the specific effect of manganese by oxidizing an Fe-26 Cr alloy containing a small manganese addition under the same experimental conditions as used for the manganese-free alloy.' EXPERIMENTAL Table I shows the composition in weight percent of the Fe-26 Cr-1 Mn alloy and of the Fe-26 Cr alloy used as reference. The alloy with manganese was prepared from the vacuum-melted Fe-26 Cr alloy by remelting in vacuum with the proper manganese addition. The ingot was rolled to strip and specimens 1.1 by 0.035 by 5 cm and 1.1 by 0.5 by 4 cm cut out or machined. As previously described2 the specimens were smoothed by abrading through 600-grit Sic paper, electropolished in acetic-perchloric acid (20 to 1) to remove 10 p of metal, annealed at 1100°C in 20 torr of purified argon, and electropolished to remove a further 10 p of metal. They were then either rinsed in water and methanol and blotted dry or immediately etched for 45 sec in deoxy-genated 4 N HC1 under cathodic polarization at 10 pa per sq cm. Oxidation runs were carried out in a vertical tube furnace in a flow of purified oxygen at 1 atm while the weight increase was recorded continuously on a* automatic balance.3 Alter 98 hr at 870.C or 20 hr at 1090"C the specimens were removed to flowing argon and observed microscopically for evidence of spalling as they cooled. Subsequently they were examined by X-ray diffraction, the oxides analyzed chemically, and metallographic cross settions prepared. RESULTS Figs. 1 and 2 show the oxidation curves of Fe-26 Cr-1 Mn at 870' and 1090C. The Fe-26 Cr reference runs are shown as dashed curves. Experimental details of the six runs are included in Table 11. The first 20 hr of run 1 is repeated in Fig. 2 to show the effect of temperature. West Virginia University researchers examined risk and exposure in the roof bolter operator's job and developed approaches for preventing accidents and for evaluating system and human performances that may be appropriate as a general application to improve safety and efficiency in the industry. Using a microanalysis of accident data and underground observations, the researchers classified bolting injuries within one of four work routines: 1) drilling bolt holes; 2) bolt installation; 3) machine tramming, (re)positioning and setting the ATRS; and 4) general face preparation. Time and motion studies were then combined with injury data analysis to develop risk and severity indices, as well as a severity-weighted index that served to determine the degree of risk and exposure by work routine. More than two dozen bolting-related problems were identified as potential situations that could lead to injuries or expose workers during their job. Approaches to avoid these situations were suggested and then applied at six mining operations to evaluate specific problems in roof bolting operations. These suggestions encompassed the three E's of Safety (Engineering, Education, and Enforcement) and emphasized the analysis of worker behaviors that lead to human error accidents.

Visit to the Datsun Nissan Company's body pressing and assembly plant at Rosslyn, Pretoria, and the Claremont-Danville Tunnel on 27th February, 1970. The excursion arranged for the 27th February to the Datsun Nissan motor car assembly plant at Rosslyn, near Pretoria, in the morning and the Claremont-Danville tunnel in the afternoon was well supported by some 43 members. The visitors were met at the factory by Mr Rademeyer, the Industrial Relations Manager, and members of his staff and were taken to the artisan training centre for light refreshments. There is a well-equipped training section with an air-conditioned lecture hall; we were told that such training facilities were important because of the cosmopolitan nature of the artisan staff. The visitors were divided into small parties and taken to the tool die and jig-making section, which is perhaps the key department for a factory of this nature. There the many dies for the presses in the body pressing section, as well as the complicated jigs for body welding are made. The technique for making the castings for the dies is interesting. A polystyrene model of the casting is embedded in moulding sand. In a neighbouring foundry molten metal is pressed into the headers and burns away the polystyrene, which leaves no residue, and this exactly fills the space occupied by the model. This rough casting is then machined in large copying machines (costing as much as Rl80 000). An exact plastic model of the surface of the pressing required, set up in juxtaposition to this casting is traversed by a master stylus which operates the slave milling cutter, thereby machining the surface to close tolerances. The machined casting is cleaned up by hand and finally finished in large spotting machines, using a blue dye to show up high spots, to the fine degree of accuracy required. The body pressing section was next visited. There the large number of pressed parts which make up a vehicle body are pressed out of special deep drawing steel plate. Some of the largest presses were capable of applying a pressure of 1 200 tons and cost as much as Rl85 000 each. The visitors then followed through to the assembly section where jigs are used to hold together the many pressings, which are then spot welded into body frames. The frames go to an assembly line where they are finished to the stage for painting. The continuous crawl painting assembly line carries the frames through all the stages of prime coating with zinc phosphate sprayed on in a tunnel, followed by immersion of the lower parts in a priming bath, then drying and spray painting and baking in tunnels. The body frames, after painting, join another assembly line, where the doors, upholstery and many fittings are attached. After this stage the completed bodies are lowered onto and attached to the chassis units which are largely assembled from imported parts (engines, transmission units, etc.). From the end of the line the completed cars are driven off to the trial track and then pass through a tunnel with powerful water sprays to detect leaks in the body work. The proportion of locally made parts is just on 45 per cent. An interesting aspect of the assembly organization is that, of the 140 or 160 cars completed each day there may be included some of each of the Datsun model as well as some Renault and Alfa Romeo models models which are assembled by this company. The change from one model to another several times a day does not present any difficulty to the organization. Each section of the assembly plant 'buys' the units from the preceeding section and 'sells' to the succeeding section. This means that the responsibility of each section ends when the unit is sold to the next section. The cost of repairing any faults found subsequently is charged to the section where it is found, which puts a powerful emphasis on meticulous inspections between sections to safeguard their costs. After the tour the parties assembled at the lecture hall where a lavish cold buffet luncheon was provided by the company. After luncheon Mr A. R. C. Fowler, on behalf of the Institute, thanked the Managing Director, Mr W. J. Wilson and his staff for this most interesting and well organized visit. The party then left for the Claremont-Danville tunnel. The tunnel is being driven by General Mining Federale Kontrakteurs through the Daspoort Range, Pretoria, to link the suburbs of Danville, near Iscor, and Claremont, which at present can only be reached by a nine mile detour. It is estimated that some 6000 vehicles per day will use the tunnel. Before entering the tunnel a short talk was given by Mr Ross who is in charge of operations. Processos de fundição de ligas de alumínio com altos teores de Mg são um desafio da indústria, uma vez que diferentes taxas de resfriamento ocorrem em geometrias diversas. Este trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar a liga de alumínio AA5052 com variações em teores de Mg por meio de experimentos de solidificação direcional transitória, e compreender seus efeitos com relação a evolução de parâmetros térmicos, microestruturais, e propriedade mecânica. As leis experimentais de evolução do espaçamento dendrítico primário (?1) com relação a taxa de resfriamento resultam em: ?_1=640 ?T ?_L?^(-1/4) para a liga 5052 com 2,4%Mg e ?_1=300 ?T ?_L?^(-1/4) para a liga com 3,2%Mg. As leis de crescimento de espaçamento dendrítico secundário (?2) com relação a velocidade de solidificação resultaram em: ?_2=27 ?V_L?^(-1,1) para a liga 5052 com 2,4%Mg e ?_2=15 ?V_L?^(-1,1) para as ligas com 2,6%Mg e 3,2%Mg. Maiores teores de Mg na liga AA5052 proporcionaram uma expressiva redução no valor de ?2 para uma determinada VL. A evolução da dureza mostrou-se diretamente relacionada ao tamanho e a distribuição dos intermetálicos presentes, sendo ?2 o fator predominante neste controle.

The Belizean economy registered a modest real growth of 1.3% during 1981. The gross domestic product (GDP), based on current prim was $121 million' with an inflation-rate of 10%. The country received $19 million in economic aid during 1981. In early 1981, Belize'e four commercial banks raised the interest on deposits to 15% in an effort to curb capital outflow. During 1981, the financial situation deteriorated somewhat, particularly the balance of payments. For the year the total value of imports exceeded exports by almost $38 million, while the Government continued to maintain a fairly free trade policy. Import duties and term averaged about 8% on essential item and 40% on nonessential ones.

A users friendly PC Computer Program has been developed to implement a systematic design of the powered support. The required input data are: (1) thickness, RQD, and compressive strength of the immediate roof; (2) mining height; and (3) type, thickness, and tensile strength of the main roof. Several important parameters for support selection under a given geological condition are generated through the implementation of the program, including type of support most favorable for the geologic condition, minimum inclination angle of the legs with respect to the horizontal axis, suitable setting load ratio of the front to rear leg for the 4-leg supports, optimum setting load, and support capacity.

THREE regional meetings are planned for this summer and fall following the spring meeting held under the auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee and the Ohio Section at Cleveland in April and in lieu of a general fall meeting of the Institute. THE SALT LAKE CITY MEETING This meeting will be under the auspices of the Milling Committee and the Utah Section. It will be one of the features of the joint convention held the week of August 22 to 26 with the Western Division of the American Mining Congress. The RockWorks EarthApps represent a free collection of 74 geology-related programs that read data from a built-in datasheet and create diagrams within Google Earth. EarthApps also includes programs that extract data from Google Earth. The programs that create diagrams include: point mapping (e.g. borehole locations), proportionally scaled icons (e.g. geochemistry), and strike & dip symbols. Line mapping utilities include; polylines, parabolas and pipelines. Polygon mapping programs include; thematic mapping (e.g. geology), mining claims, and public land survey sections. Image overlay capabilities include; draping (e.g. geologic maps) and time-based animations. Vertical image display capabilities are centered on either midpoints (e.g. drill-hole logs) or stretched between endpoints (e.g. cross-sections). The Flyover programs create virtual tours for site presentations. The cell-mapping includes a variety of algorithms (e.g. geochemical and geophysical contouring). Survey programs convert and export survey data to Google Earth as points and polygons. Programs that extract data from Google Earth include; points, lineations, polylines, and polygons. The RockWorks/EarthApps collection is developed by RockWare Incorporated based in Golden, Colorado.

The Australian gold industry has made large steps forward in the last few years. This progress has been driven by improvements in mining and processing technology, the high price of gold and by a favourable legislative, political and taxation environment. This paper concentrates on improvements in gold project development, process engineering and technology as seen by BHP Engineering, Perth, Australia. The paper describes technical aspects of successful gold project development including metallurgical test work, feasibility studies, choice of process flow sheet (gravity, heap leach, carbon in pulp (CIP), carbon in leach (CIL) or other routes). It sets out our views on plant design, plant construction, procurement and project management. A case study for a small plant recently completed in the Philippines is presented as a solution to the problems often encountered in treating quartz vein gold deposits.

The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) is the largest international geoscience project in the world, and the state-of-the-art drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is permanently at sea. Each year there are six scientific cruises (legs) which each last approximately two months. These legs are designed by geoscientists from the nineteen countries that subscribe to ODP.Australia and Canada presently share ODP membership under the banner of the AUSCAN Consortium. The benefits of Australia's involvement in ODP include internationalisation of Australian geoscience, advanced graduate training, and unique scientific investigations of the ocean floors in the Australasian region. In addition, visits to Australian ports by the ODP drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, contribute up to $2 million per visit to the local economy. Amongst the many other aspects of ten years of scientific drilling, OOP has significantly contributed to our understanding of hydrothermal processes on the seafloor. To date, three hydrothermal sites have been drilled to date by the OOP, Snakepit (MAR), Middle Valley (Juan de Fuca Ridge) and TAG (MAR). Two more hydrothermal sites are scheduled for 1996.

This document is the final report of a study aimed at defining the relative contributions of various sources of respirable airborne dust on longwall faces. In order to define the contribution of various primary sources, continuous dust level data were recorded on five longwalls for an average of five shifts at each. By analysis of these data with records of face activity, it was possible to determine the overall contribution of each of the major elements of the longwall system to overall respirable dust exposure at various face locations. Average levels were determined for roof support generated dust, conveyor and intake dust and for dust levels during various shearer activities. When average levels are compared between mines, a significant degree of consistency is noted. The next phase of the study was aimed at differentiating the various dust sources associated with the shearer. To this end 'fly cuts' varying from 6 in. to 30 in. were closely monitored as were dust levels at operators' positions over the various segments of longwall cycle. These data indicated that the clearance ring of the shearer drum as a disproportionately heavy contributor to shearer dust make. A statistical analysis of the effect of shearer haulage speed on dust make revealed that high haulage speeds are associated with low specific dust make.

From the title of this chapter the reader could expect an attempt to outline the anticipated shape of things to come, mineralwise. We have no crystal ball and if we possessed one we could claim no expertness in its use. In the first place no one can tell the future status of man. No one has any way of knowing to what extent peace will prevail, nor to what extent changes may occur in national sovereignties or forms of government or in international relationships. So future man is an uncertainty. Nor can we predict new developments that may result in significant changes in man's status or in the mineral industry or both. If, for example, this chapter had been written in the middle 1930's, nearly everything that has happened since in the field of atomic energy would have been missed. Yet what a vast change this has made in the status of man! Also the changes in the mineral industry have been important. A writer would have been bold indeed had he prophesied that uranium would play such an important role. But we need not confine our foggy vision to the atomic energy field. The steep rise in the use of aluminum, titanium, and germanium reflects the unpredictable in what may be thought of as the more normal pursuits. This should not discourage one from using the past and currently observable trends as bases for limited predictions. To do this, however, it is desirable to make certain assumptions about man's status without even a pretense that these assumptions have a high probability of fulfillment: 1. Only minor changes will occur in the geographical boundaries of the nations of the world. 2. World War III will not take place in the near future. 3. As a consequence of (2), man will not destroy himself by wanton use of atomic weapons. 4. Disarmament will take place, if at all, gradually rather than all at one time. Under the above assumptions the world will enjoy a period of relative peace even though the status may be one of an armed truce. The assump-

Researchers from the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to assess the safety of remotely controlled mobile roof supports (MRS) in a retreat pillar mining operation, Data were collected to provide the Mine Health and Safety Administration with criteria needed to develop guidelines for MRS use and to determine if precursors could be identified that would alert miners to imminent roof falls. Two test sites at which two different support methods-MRS's and posts were used and were monitored to obtain information on entry stability. Pressure transducers and string pots were installed on all four MRS's to obtain loading and displacement information. and roof bolt load cells. sonic probes, extensometers, and survey targets were installed in the surrounding entries to obtain information on ground behavior. Results showed a larger increase in roof bolt loading and roof movement when MRS's were used, especially in the intersection area. Roof bolt loads in the entries showed decreases in load when the MRS's were set and increases up to 11,1 kN (2,500 lbf) when the MRS's were unloaded. Unloading of one MRS in a pair did not significantly increase load on the other. MRS's I and 2 usually had the higher loads, with these loads increasing as the pillars on each side were being mined. MRS 3 normally had lower loads than I and 2: however, it also experienced some very high loads when in the last position near the pushout. MRS 4 usually had the lowest loads, primarily because it was located near the solid pillar that was not being mined.
