Crude shale oil produced by underground retorting of Green River Formation oil shale was hydrogasified over a cobalt-molybdate-on-alumina catalyst at operating temperatures ranging from 800° to 1,300° F, pressures of 500, 1,000, and 1,500 psig, and a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.02 volumes of oil per volume of catalyst per hour (Vo/Vc/hr). At a temperature of 1,300° F and pressure of 1,500 psig, 94 weight-percent of the liquid feed was converted to gas containing 72 volume-percent methane. With two reactors in series at a temperature of 1,170° F in reactor 1 and 1,260° F in reactor 2 and a pressure of 1,500 psig, 97 weight-percent of the liquid feed was converted to gas with a methane content of 75 volume-percent. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was hydrogasified at operating temperatures ranging from 500° to 1,400° F at a pressure of 500 psig over a cobalt-molybdate-on-alumina catalyst. Similar experiments were made with an empty tubular reactor. The data indicate that gasification reactions in the presence of a cobalt-molybdate catalyst change from predominantly a catalytic (carbonium ion) reaction to predominantly a thermal (free radical) reaction at temperatures greater than 1,100° F. The data also indicate that a reaction temperature of 1,350° F is necessary at the space velocities used in this investigation to make a synthetic natural gas (methane content of 90 volume-percent) from in situ crude shale oil.

The figures and tables referred to herein are presented in the Proceedings; Volume I, Pages 309 through 316. The 61-story One Liberty Place, at 315 m., is the tallest building 1n Philadelphia and was in 1987 the ninth tallest building in the world. One Liberty Place is supported on drilled piers socketed in heterogeneous metamorphic rock. Design load distribution was 40% on the base and 60% by shaft resistance. Drilled Pier G-10 supporting a T13-A type outrigger column was instrumented. There 1s no uplift load on the exterior outrigger columns. This column supports a 53,850 kN compressive load which includes a 13,440 kN windload. Table 4 presents experimental parameters from straight line interpolation of Mohr failure envelopes for the Wissahickon schist. Lowest values of cohesion (12,200 kN/m2) and angle of internal friction (19°) are at a 50° - 59° angle of foliation. Figure 3 presents a typical pier supported by shaft resistance 1n decomposed (D) and coreable (C) rock and by end bearing (B).

The Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project is part of a regional Public-Private initiative to allow double stack container trains a direct route from the Port of Norfolk through Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and into Central Ohio. The project involves clearance improvements to twenty-eight tunnels, twenty-one of which require structural modification. With construction of the first Package of tunnels just underway at press time, this paper summarizes the program implementation from design through the initial stages of construction.

The 11th Annual Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) conference was held April10-12, 2002, in Montreal, Quebec. It consisted of a series of technical sessions. Each paper addressed the economic issues that are related to the changes that many people believe are now required in the mining industry. Some of the papers were directed at how the mining industry will handle the changes that will be required in its philosophy and operations management. Of equal importance was whether the industry possesses the toolkit necessary to effect these changes and emerge stronger from its challenges.

Adverse ground behavior events, such as convergence and falls of ground, are some of the most significant challenges and hazards in underground mines. Our goal is to work toward mine-wide, digital, and real-time three-dimensional geotechnical situational awareness and predictive capabilities in complex underground mining operations. This will benefit operators, engineers, and management by enabling them to develop a more proactive approach to ground control. To this end, and inspired by research in the field of remote sensing and autonomous robotics, this paper assesses the potential of mobile light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data acquisition for high-frequency, high-accuracy monitoring tasks in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) deprived underground mines. Limitations of current monitoring practices are reviewed. Relevant academic and commercial developments in the fields of indoor mobile mapping systems (MMSs) and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), robust autonomous robotic platforms, and automated remote sensing data processing are highlighted, and their current shortfalls are evaluated. To conclude, the ramifications of this work for the development of future autonomous underground mine monitoring solutions are discussed.

"Significant advances in mining and metallurgical operations have occurred over the last two decades, to define ore bodies via geological mapping, mineralogical analyses, geostatistical models and resource reserve modeling. Metallurgical process measurement, controls and modeling have also significantly progressed, with advanced instrumentation, control software, data capture systems and simulation tools. This progress together with development of the science of geometallurgy has allowed geologists, mineralogists, miners and metallurgists to start working together to define geometallurgical ore units and link these to mine planning and projected metallurgical performance. However, application of full geometallurgical programs into existing mine-processing operations or into new “greenfield” projects has been slow. This is mainly due to higher costs, limited dedicated technical resources and little or no corporate leadership. Additionally, life-of-mine cash flow models, the “dollars”, have been largely driven by ore tonnage rates, pay-metal grades and fixed pay-metal percentage recoveries, with few or no geometallurgical parameters included.Here defined, the “electrons” represent intrinsic ore characteristics embracing chemical composition, mineralogy, gangue components and their associated fundamental metallurgical processing phenomena. With its ever expanding treasure chest of measurement and modeling tools, geometallurgy paints a much clearer picture of the “electrons” for the geologist and metallurgist. But to fully understand and realize the real net value of ores over the life of a mine, a comprehensive link of “electrons to the dollars” is essential. Intrinsic characteristics of geometallurgical ore units are by definition linked to their metallurgical processing, but importantly need also to be related to operating costs, capital requirements and revenue.This paper discusses this important linkage under topics of ore geology and mineralogy, metallurgical processing, waste disposal, environmental issues, metal refining, project engineering and lifeof- mine models. Topics are illustrated by multi-metal references and by case examples from gold ore heap leaching and manganese ore smelting projects. 1"

The purpose of tins paper is not to present new date on the pressure losses due to bends and chances of area in mine openings through which air flows, but rather to correlate existing data, determined mainly on small duct systems and expressed in a variety of ways, according to uniform methods that facilitate their use in pressure-loss computations. These are required in such, air-flow problems as determining the quantity that will flow through is mine openings under a certain pressure difference or, conversely, the pressure difference that will be required to maintain a certain rate of flow. Air flowing through h ducts, such as mine airways, encounters resistance to flow due to interference of the individual air streams with each other caused by the wall surfaces. The result is that part of the kinetic energy of the flowing stream is converted to heat; and constant renewal of the kinetic energy from the total energy of the flow is required to maintain it. This process manifests itself by a decrease of the total pressure (static pressure plus velocity pressure; of the air in the direction of flow; in order that flow pray occur, there must necessarily be a differences in total pressure between the two cads of the air-ay equivalent to the pressure losses occasioned by the flow, which automatically adjusts itself in magnitude to the pressure difference maintained.

Waste areas of a mine should be sealed especially if there is a risk of spontaneous combustion. Leakage through and around such seals can be problematic. Pressure balancing has been one of the favored options to prevent the ingress of air into these waste areas. Balance chambers require maintenance and monitoring to ensure that they are effective. This paper explores the use of inert gas as a means of controlling ingress of air and egress of waste gases as a means of reducing leakage around seals.

Comminution within rod mills has been investigated by use of a matrix analysis of breakage processes. A parameter, the number of breakage stages, has been introduced and comminution within all rod mills has been expressed in terms of the number of grinding stages and a function which describes the feed rate, mill diameter, and mill speed. The effect of variation in feed rate, feed sizing analysis and mill speed on the number of breakage stages is discussed, but no general relation is proposed because more study is needed.INTRODUCTIONRod mills are normally used as the first unit of multi-unit systems for the grinding of metalliferous ores and the cost of operating rod mills may be considerable. For both economic and metallurgical reasons, it is therefore necessary that the mills should be operated efficiently and that a knowledge of the mechanism of the size reduction process within rod mills should be as complete as possible. Rock property data is needed over a wide range of parameters for the optimum execution of rapid excavation research. Eight rock types were chosen by the Bureau of Mines for a standard rock suite for such research. Large rock blocks were quarried and the standard physical and mechanical properties measured and documented. The eight rock types that comprise the rock suite are Barre Granite, Berea Sandstone, Dresser basalt, Holston Limestone, Salem Lime-stone, Sioux Quartzite, St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, and Westerly Granite. Geologic, petrographic, physical-property, and mechanical-property test data are reported for each rock type. The information is the first step in the building of a comprehensive property listing for the eight rock types. A limited number of rock cubes are available from the Bureau of Mines Twin Cities Mining Research Center for use by researchers to broaden the information available on the suite.

Theory pertaining to the exchangeability of fuel gases on appliances has been extended to exchanges of propane or butane with mixtures of these. In particular, new considerations were developed bearing on the hazard of an occasional emission of carbon monoxide and flashback and blowoff possibilities. The new considerations involve using current requirements for approval of liquefied petroleum gas appliances. These requirements were used to predict allowable tolerances in chemical composition of liquefied petroleum gases for existing appliances. "Since year 2000 the gold recovery into copper concentrate at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting has reduced considerably during the summer months. This initiated a testwork program in the fall 2003 to find reasons and solutions for such change. During the testwork mineralogical factors, water quality effects and different reagents were evaluated. The reason for the lower recovery appeared to be the sensitivity of some collectors to pulp temperature. As a result of the work different collectors are being used in the mill in the summer than in the winter. A modification to the water system was also made to provide cooler water to the mill in the summer months.INTRODUCTIONHudson Bay Mining and Smelting (HBMS) is located in Northern Manitoba, just on the border of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The complex consist of four different mines, Callinan, Trout Lake, Konuto Lake and 777 mine including copper smelter and zinc hydrometallurgical plants producing metallic copper and zinc. Gold is a very important byproduct providing about 30% of the mine revenue. In early 1990s when the company was facing declining ore reserves and was starting to gradually close down the operations, the 777’th exploration drill hole discovered a new orebody, which initiated a $0.5 billion expansion program. The main projects were a new 777 hoist with underground development and a new zinc cell house. About $30 million was used to increase the mill throughput to the present 2.27 million tonnes or 2.5 million short tons per year. The expansion programs were finished by the end of the year 2003.Historically the gold recovery at HBMS has varied between 60 and 70%. The recovery has been somewhat lower during the summer months. Gold recovery improvement projects were conducted throughout the 1990s, but were not focused on the seasonal gold recovery variance. However, since 2000, when the water system modifications to meet the increased water demand were completed, the gold recovery during the summer has been much lower than in the past. In August 2003 gold recovery fell below 30%, which initiated a metallurgical research program to discover the reasons behind the low gold recovery in the summer."

"This paper introduces the operational concept and the description of a multi-site Remote Support Center for knowledge management and long-term process performance improvement.This centralized Support Center provides real-time monitoring of open-platform process automation systems, and on-line access to process data and control applications information for multiple sites.Considering that process automation is a key enabler to business performance improvement, sustaining effective performance benefits over time becomes essential. Unfortunately, changes in manufacturing process dynamics, technology obsolescence and in plant operational practices cause the control strategies to lose their effectiveness over time unless their performance is periodically evaluated, and if required, tuned to the new process conditions.A new concept in process automation is proposed through the addition of a new control loop based on performance analysis methodology which is intended to feedback process and automation operation information to system and process specialists, allowing for continuous manufacturing process improvement and sustainable production benefits through effectual control strategies.A remote support center can play a key role in the delivery of such services, by providing the base platform from which a comprehensive process overview and a centralized knowledge database can be executed and additionally, as an enabler for plant operational practices change.INTRODUCTIONA Benchmark on Automation Level in Copper Concentrators conducted by AMIRA in 2004, reported that the Codelco divisions scored below their peers in several categories.Codelco had thereafter been looking for a new automation concept, and had focused on process automation as a key enabler for process manufacturing and business performance improvement. The final decision was to create a strategic alliance with a world-class automation technology provider.The traditional approach based on isolated automation solutions/projects, showed that the control strategies benefits were decreasing progressively over time, because of the on-going need to adapt the control models to the ever-changing process conditions and different plant operational practices. Another consequence of this traditional approach was the wide variety of technologies and automation systems deployed in the different plant sites, with no common automation standards, and with low opportunities to transfer knowledge or practices."

A number of impending and actual pit wall failures have been observed and documented, which have been interpreted to initiate on newly generated structural features. This infers failure through intact rock. Failure mechanisms have been postulated resulting from circumferential stress, extensional strain and brittle flexure. These will be discussed in the context of the failures and the associated monitoring. The implications of failure initiating on ?unknown? features has a significant impact for deep open pit mines where designs are based on the expected structural regime. Being able to anticipate such failures is important for design. Equally important is management of such changes as they arise. In this context, monitoring using high resolution microseismic techniques will be discussed as a means of providing early warning of such failures.

Bauxite was first discovered in-the United States near Rome, Ga., in 1887, Approximately 400,000 tons of bauxite ranging from 46 to-62 percent alumina were mined in the area from 1888 to 1930. In February 1943, The Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. installed a dryer and began mining and reworking dumps from the old bauxite mines. Some 3,000 long tons were dried and shipped to the chemical industries from March 1943, to June 30, 1943. In 1941 and 1942, representatives of the Bureau of Mined and the Federal Geological Survey/ visited this area and proposed an exploratory project that at first was to be confined to the Heritage district northeast of Rome (see fig; I). The Bobo district, southwest of Rome, was to be explored after work .1n the Hermitage district was completed. The Hermitage district comprises an area of about 50 square miles in the northwest quarter of Bartow County and the adjacent portion of Floyd County. It is bounded on the north by the Gordon County line, on the east by U. S. Highway 41, on the south by U. S. Highway 441, and on the west by State Highway 53.

In the deformation of a metal or a single-phase alloy all the crystals composing the metal after their shape in a similar manner as the metal in bulk and to about· the same extent. This is not the case in an alloy consisting of two phases of different resistance to plastic deformation. In such an alloy the two phases take part in the deformation approximately in inverse proportion to their hardness, at least at the beginning of the deformation. (1) The hardness difference becomes less in the course of the deformation and thereby the deformation more equal. The phenomena occurring during cold-rolling of some two-phase alloys have been investigated by H. Unckel who made statistical grain measurements of the degree of deformation of the two phases after various reductions by rolling and also microscopical observations of the flow in the neighbourhood of the grain boundaries. Because of the different relative flow of the two phases, the normal flow is disturbed in the vicinity of their boundaries, and some additional plastic flow must take place in these regions, the disturbance being levelled out at some distance from the boundary. The deformation of the two phases present simultaneously in the material should thus be different from that of each phase separately. The investigation of theimportance and the effects of this interaction of crystals of different phases is the subject of this paper.The deformation of crystals occurs as a gliding of crystal layers following crystallographic laws. In consequence of this slip the crystals composing the material tend to assume a common orientation, i.e. some crystallographic axes tend to become parallel to each other in all the crystals. The type of this preferred orientation depends on the type of the crystal and the working process. Any change in the mechanism of deformation results, therefore, in a change in the preferred orientation. Such a change in kind and degree of preferred orientation will, therefore, also occur if the interaction of crystals in a two-phase alloy gives rise to a mechanism of deformation different from that in the free phases.The present paper describes a study of the preferred orientation, the microstructure and hardness in wires of brass drawn to various extents.The development of preferred orientations in the two phases with increasing reduction was followed up in various layers of the wire.EXPERIMENTAL DETAILSThe experiments were carried out with a commercial 5 S.W.G. wire (0,212 in. diameter) containing: 62·7% Cu, 37·3% Zn, very faint traces...
