The authors are lead authors for chapter 4.3 ?Emissions from Ferroalloy Production? in ?2006 IPCC Guide-lines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, Volume 3?. The paper discusses the methods to calculate and report emissions from the production of ferrosilicon, silicon-metal, ferromanganese, silicomanganese and ferrochromium alloys, as well as the basis for the methods and choice of emission factors. CO2 is the main greenhouse gas emission from ferroalloy production, accounting for about 95 % of the total CO2-equivalents. The most accurate method of determining emissions is to base the calculations on reported amounts and analyses of reducing agents and carbonate ores used in the process. If analyses are not available, typical CO2 emission factors for the different reducing agents are recommended. If neither reliable amounts nor analyses of all reducing agents are known, default generic CO2 emission factors for the type of ferroalloy multiplied with amount produced, can be used. The CO2 produced from bio-carbon (charcoal and wood chips) should be reported but will not be accounted for in national emissions. If any bio-carbon is used, the default generic CO2 emission factors cannot be applied. CH4 accounts for less than 1 % of the total emission of CO2-equivalents. Default emissions factors for CH4 are given for the production in open or semi-closed furnaces of silicon-metal and ferrosilicon. In the production of FeMn, SiMn and FeCr in closed furnaces the gas containing CO,CO2 and volatiles can be combusted in boilers and N2O may be formed. While reporting is not required, IPCC Guidelines recommend that the N2O-content in the off-gas is measured.

Stratigraphy of the Hamersley Province in Western Australia, featuring alternating units of banded iron formations and shales with contrasting electrical properties in a mostly gently undulating shallow-dipping layered geometry, is particularly favourable to airborne time-domain electromagnetic mapping techniques. Manipulated vertical cross-sections of modelled conductivity obtained from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of SkyTEM304 data enable the exploration geologist to interpret weathering profiles, shallow-dipping stratigraphy and steep structures, all of which are crucial aspects of bedded iron ore deposits genesis models.The Cobra Project is located 14 km east of the NNW-trending Menindee Fault Zone, which defines the western margin of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. The region comprises an extensive plateau of Brockman Iron Formation cut by a series of horst and grabens with a regional dextral strike-slip component. The 150° striking horst and grabens and associated 060° striking conjugate faults have approximate frequencies of 400 and 2000 m, respectively, and control the bulk of the iron mineralisation. Syn to late 150° trending dykes in part intrude the faults.In the Cobra region, elucidating the structurally dislocated stratigraphy without closely spaced drilling is very challenging. Geological mapping is hindered by the paucity of mappable stratigraphic markers within the banded iron formations and kinematic indicators. Airborne magnetic and remote sensing data sets highlight the dense lineament network, but provide limited assistance in quantifying relatively small apparent displacements, or distinguishing faults from dykes with reasonable confidence.Interpretation of modelled conductivity cross-sections generated from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of airborne electromagnetic method (AEM) data offers invaluable insight where the quality of mapping or drilling is wanting. Subsequent targeted field checking and infill drilling validated the geological model interpreted from the integration of these data sets.The AEM technique alone cannot decipher the complex geological environments often present in the Hamersley Province but can facilitate effective iron ore exploration by focusing precious field time and assisting structural and stratigraphic interpretations in areas with sporadic and shallow geological data.CITATION:Murray, R, Neroni, R, Kepert, D and Bresnahan, J, 2017. Papers presented at a U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) technology transfer seminar describe the causes of violent material failure in U.S. mines, measurement techniques for monitoring events that result in violent failure, and mitigation techniques for controlling failure. Specific factors contributing to violent failure are identified on the basis of geotechnical monitoring in 16 U.S. hard-rock and coal mines and on statistical analyses of 172 coal bump events. New monitoring and analysis techniques developed as tools for assessing violent failure; geotomographic methods that provide new capabilities for the study of material failure and stress changes over large areas; and seismic methods for determining source locations, calculating energy release, and determining source mechanisms are described. Fair correlations have been established among seismic parameters, elastic stresses, face support load, and violent events. USBM studies have identified the advantages using both yielding and stable pillars for coal bump control. A computer program has been developed as an aid for selecting room-and-pillar layouts. The practical aspects of implementing a destressing program is outlined for coal mines, while the importance of mine orientation and timely support installation in controlling buckling-type failure is identified for hard-rock mines.

"Part 1. REDUCTION AND USE OF OXIDANTSSUMMARYA study has been made of the volumetric determination of molybdenum by reduction in the Jones reductor, receiving the reduced solution in a mixture of ferric alum and phosphoric acid, and titrating with standard oxidizing agents. In addition to potassium permanganate, which has long been utilized for this titration, potassium dichromate and ceric sulphate have been found to be applicable. The latter oxidants have been found to be especially useful in the form of dilute solutions for the determination of small amounts of molybdenum. The tests revealed that certain internal indicators give excellent results in these titrations.Reason for These ExperimentsThe following study was initiated with the hope of providing the mining and metallurgical industries with an accurate and rapid technical method for the determination of molybdenum in such low-grade materials as ores, rocks, tailings, steels, and alloys containing less than 0.3 percent molybdenum. Although the experimental work was designed with this purpose in mind, many of the results are applicable to material containing a higher percentage of molybdenum.While the Bureau of Mines had an experiment station in Colorado, considerable analytical work was done on what were then (up to about 1923) classed as rare metals. One of these was molybdenum; and in Bulletin 212, Bonardi's (1) 3/ 60-page chapter covered all methods for the analysis of molybdenum."

Identifying, quantifying and minimizing technical risks associated to investment decisions is a key challenge for the minerals industry decision takers and investors. However, risk analysis in most bankable mine feasibility studies are based on stochastic modelling of project NPV which, in most cases, fail to provide decision makers with a truly comprehensive analysis of risks associated to technical and management uncertainty and, as the result, are of little use for risk management and project optimization. This paper presents a value-chain risk management approach where project risk is evaluated for each step of the project lifecycle, from exploration to mine closure, and risk management is performed as part of a stepwise value added optimization process.

The Greater Vancouver Regional District completed installation of a 2.5 Km long, 2400 mm diameter concrete sewer in Delta, British Columbia in 2000. The sewer traverses through area of peat and soft ground. The ground investigation along the sewer alignment consisted of cone penetration tests and auger drilling with standard penetration tests. The gravity sewer is supported on precast, pretensioned spun concrete piles imported from Malaysia which had never been used for a major project in North America. The capacities of the installed piles were tested using pile driving analyzer (PDA) and three static load tests. A total of 46 PDA tests were carried out during pile installation. The paper describes the pile vetting process the owner went through prior to accepting the piles for use in the project and performance of the piles. It compares the pile capacity estimated from the PDA tests with that estimated from soil mechanics methods using data from cone penetration tests and standard penetration tests. The ranges of estimated capacities calculated by different methods are discussed from design capacity selection considerations.

Gold mining is a subject that not only appeals to the popular imagination but has vital importance to the world's economic structure. However, a discussion of the use of gold as a medium of exchange, and a basis for credit between nations and for monetary systems is not within the scope of this paper. The importance of gold in carrying on the commerce of the world, the present supply and rate of production, the probable trend of future production, the probable future requirements, and related subjects have recently received much attention from bankers and economists, and many articles on these subjects have been published. During slack periods of base-metal production due to falling prices, accompanied by scaling down of base-metal mining operations and often by the closing down of at least some mines, there usually result revival of interest in gold mining, search for previously undiscovered deposits, and reopening of some old gold mines.

South Africa?s primary electricity supplier, Eskom, provides incentives to reduce power demand during critical times by granting capital through a Demand Side Management programme. DSM encourages the end user to review and optimize energy consuming systems and use capital, provided by Eskom, to purchase or modify the equipment required to achieve a load-shift. As part of the DSM agreement the mine ultimately acquires the capital equipment and benefits from reduced power costs, but in return is required to sustain the load-shift tactic for up to five years. The paper focuses on one DSM tactic, main fan energy management. In this case, reduced air flows during selected peak and off peak periods, results in a substantial reduction in peak power demand. DSM incentives provided capital for automated main fan control as well as improved control of the mine ventilation systems. To examine the work in detail Gold Fields Ltd Driefontein gold mine near Johannesburg was chosen as a case study.

A preliminary survey of coke and steel plants conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Office of the Solid Fuels Administrator for War and with the advice of the Coke Production Committee indicated that production of pig iron could be increased. appreciably if present blast furnaces were supplied with a more uniform coke.4/ Nonvarying percentages of ash , sulfur , and fixed carbon in the coke , together with uniform physical characteristics , such as size , strength , and porosity , would aid the blast -furnace operator greatly in his trial - and - error methods of obtaining maximum production . With nonuniform raw materials he must employ certain factors of safety in operation , such as an excess of coke , an excess of limestone , and operation of the furnace below the maximum rate . Even so , he often has trouble from iron not being up to specifications , hot tops , high blowing pressures , furnace hanging up , etc. The more uniform his raw materials (of which coke is probably the most important) , the nearer to ideally can he run his furnace and thereby save raw material and increase production . One cause of nonuniformity of the coke produced by ordinary American plant practice is the prevailing lack of precise control of the bulk density ' of the coal charge in the byproduct oven . This report summarizes the available information on the subject of bulk density of crushed coal and its control . It includes brief reviews of some of the literature , some results obtained at plants visited by the authors , and results of a few preliminary tests made at the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of Mines .

Bulk sampling programs are typically applied in coarse gold mineralised systems to verify resource/reserve grades. In recent years, there have been controversies surrounding some results of underground bulk sampling exercises compared to the predictions using diamond drill data. Just how realistic is it to predict 100 t lots from drilling that was designed to model blocks of several thousand tonnes? This study looks at the variation of relatively small units within larger planned mining units and compares some of the geostatistical techniques which purport to provide tools for such studies. Relative difficulty of application, computer timings and summaries of results will be used to illustrate the likely variation in bulk sampling units as opposed to mining units and large-scale planning units. A case study based on publicly available data from a gold project in North America is presented. A simplistic and unconditional geostatistical simulation model demonstrated that up to 50 per cent of a relatively high-grade mining block could show as uneconomic low-grade subblocks. A subsequent study will consider a similar demonstration using uniform conditioning. Erroneous impressions of early sampling results can lead to unsupported prejudgements of the final results. Bulk sampling programs require detailed planning based on ore characteristics, where protocols must fit the mineralisation type. "Various full-scale test programs and installations of the InLine Pressure Jig (IPJ) have provided evidence that pre-concentration of the difficult to leach sulphide mineral through gravity can provide significant increases in economic recoveries. The continuous gravity concentrates are intensively treated either by re-grinding or Intensive Cyanidation. Data from various mine sites worldwide is presented. Treatment of complex ore bodies with this low cost methodology may render previously uneconomic ore bodies financially viable and assist in the recovery profile of transitional ore.INTRODUCTIONThe use of gravity is made extremely attractive in complex ore situations due to the low cost of operation, typically a few cents per ton operating cost and lack of chemicals.Gold mines which suffer from poor recovery due to complex mineralogy such as Stibnite, Arsenic, Carbon, Telluride, Silver and other pacifying agents such as Iron, which can form coatings, can all benefit from the process proposed in this paper. The key issue is not overall recovery as much as one of economic recovery. The key to this is maximised recovery at the lowest possible capital and operating cost. Other options such as flotation are reviewed but are not seen in many instances to be the panacea due to issues discussed in the paper. The use of the InLine Pressure Jig in the re-circulating load of the milling circuit is a cost effective means of recovering a sulphide/gold concentrate containing the complex mineral assemblages which require re-grinding and intensive leaching for optimised gold recovery.The benefits of Jig Assisted Grinding (JAG) are many and the challenge over the past years has been developing, understanding, implementing and evaluating the benefits of various flowsheet models. This has involved the reconciliation of results in plant scale trials back to the original laboratory test program. The following paper outlines the insights gained in this area through extensive work carried out by many people across both laboratories and plant sites in Australia and overseas. The examples in this paper are some of the work carried out on a few selected sites but similar work has been carried out on other sites such as Penjom, Granny Smith and Agnew. This work has eventuated in several installations which we believe have great importance in the future of the gold processing industry. They will lead the way forward to the modern all-gravity plants of the future.Compared to flotation, for the recovery of sulphides, gravity is a simple option. The simplicity generally translates to low capital and operating cost."

Testwork at Goedehoop Colliery showed that fine coal, essentially?150 microns can be successfully beneficiated using froth flotation. Both conventional and column flotation were tested. It was found that the traditional stirred tank type of flotation machines used in conventional flotation produced the best recovery of fine coal. After extensive testwork it was decided to develop a flotation machine on Goedehoop Colliery that would combine stirred tank and quiescent column technology. It was thought that this design would give the best combination of recovery and selectivity. The Multicell was developed and is producing results acceptable for Witbank coal flotation. "In the mineral processing industries, there is an increasing need to design thickeners which are able to produce high density underflows usually referred to as “paste”.The behaviour of a flocculated suspension in compression needs to be well understood in order to arrive at a reliable thickener tank configuration (i.e. diameter, cone angle and depth) for a required paste result.As a suspension approaches paste consistency, it’s fluid characteristics change markedly. It develops a high yield stress, and may have an increased tendency to form agglomerates, which lead to a phenomenon known as “rotating beds”, “donuts”, or “islands”. Applications such as Autoclave feed thickeners, paste backfill and some counter current washing (CCD) circuits are all examples of potential paste thickening applications. The principle of paste thickeners is that the compression zone is much deeper than on either high rate (HRT) or high compression (HCT) units; generally 3 metres or more. As the compression zone gets deeper, theunderflow density for a given flux rate (tph/m2) increases, as a result of two factors:1. Longer bed settling time. Settling flocs move relative to one another and release interstitial fluid when they are in compression. Increasing bed residence time achieves higher density underflow as more fluid is removed.2. The nett weight of the bed creates a compressive force on the settling flocs. This force increases with depth, so that the flocs at the bottom of the bed experience the highest compressive force. This represents the driving force to expel interstitial fluid and hence increase bed density."

At the Twin Cities "lining Research Center (TCMRC) a project is underway to determine how varying the parameters of a coal-cutting process would affect the amount and the size distribution of the generated dust. The cutting parameters being investigated are the cutting speed, depth of cut and shape of the cutting, tool. To accomplish this research ft is necessary to collect and transport the coal dust venerated at the cutting tool to measuring instruments for analysis. The purpose of this contract was to develop and deliver a system of instruments for measuring the size distributions of the generated coal dust. The instruments employed are essentially those developed for particulate air pollution measurements (1, 2). The instrument system covers a particle size range of 0.005 to 20 microns and is capable of performing in situ measurement and presenting data in real time.

THE conductivity of copper wire is of prime importance to the electrical industry and consequently to the copper refiner and wire manufacturer. Annealed copper wire has a higher conductivity than hard-drawn wire, but, on the other hand, its tensile strength is lower. In an attempt to explain the reasons for these changes in property or at least to study the conditions existing in these two types of copper wire, the experiments described here were carried on in the Department of Metallurgy of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. This is only a partial and preliminary report on some of the work done to date on a research program of which the object is an intensive study of copper. It is offered with the hope that, though it is not an exposition of the most rigorous of conclusions, the general trend of inferences which may be drawn will be of value and interest.

Previous investigations suggest the possibility of determining shear strength of geologic materials by measuring the force necessary to rupture the web between two closely-spaced, parallel holes using a borehole jack. Current research using finite element modeling and laboratory testing of intact rock indicates that web failure initiates by tensile fracturing induced by a complex stress field. Based on these results, a theoretical justification for relating web strength with shear strength appears unlikely for holes of equal diameter spaced two diameters apart. Empirical results, however, show a strong correlation between average web strength and average unconfined compressive strength for some rock materials under laboratory conditions. A good correlation also exists between residual web strength and the residual angle of friction under the same conditions. This research project involves the construction and field testing of a large borehole jack. The jack is designed to operate within a conventional 12-1/4 inch rotary blasthole common to open pit mining. The system is capable of exerting approximately 800,000 pounds on curved platen measuring roughly 4x24 inches. Field tests indicate that the system will operate in a mining environment, and preliminary results suggest the possibility of using the force-displacement data generated by the jack to rank the competency of material within a mine bench.

"The management of acid rock drainage( ARD) to prevent impact when tailings are disposed of in the environment requires understanding of the phenomena giving rise to acidic drainage, a rigorous evaluation of the weathering characteristics of the tailings, and the successful implementation of control measures that will be effective in the long term. This paper provides a brief theoretical background to the complex reactions taking place in mill tailings containing residual sulfide minerals which must be appreciated to enable waste characterization program to be effective in predicting the future behavior of the tailings and in designing control methods which will work. "The process of filtrate loss of low solid-phase drilling fluid at different content of polyanionic cellulose is investigated by the standard filtration test. The test results showed that when time of filtration is same, the filtrate volume decreases linearly with the increase of content of polyanionic cellulose. When content of polyanionic cellulose is same, the velocity of filter loss decreases nonlinearly with the increase of time and the velocity of filter loss will reach a stable value. The filtrate volume in 7 to 8 minutes can reach half of the total filtrate volume. At the same time, the velocity of filter loss of drilling fluid decreases nonlinearly with the increase of viscosity. When apparent viscosity is between 3.5~4.15 mPa.s, decrease speed of velocity of filter loss is quick. The results are helpful for characteristics evaluation of filtrate loss of drilling fluid and control of filtrate loss.IntroductionDuring the process of drilling, water of drilling fluid can leakage into stratum, the water can result in instability and collapse of borehole wall. At the same time, the original ratio of drilling fluid will change. The density of drilling fluid will increase, the performance of the drilling fluid will change. Controlling amount of filtration is important to drill successfully. The additives of controlling filtrate loss are mainly two types, particle materials and polymer materials. High-molecular polymer is a kind of high-molecular material, has the adsorption effect, high polymer protection, can improve the advantages of slurry viscosity (Xu,2004 and Dehghanpour,2001). Some scholars carried out some study on the polymer material fluid loss agent in recent years, these study mainly focused on CMC, HEC, MHEC, CMHEC, starch and its derivatives(Zhang,2005 and Chevron,2009).About PAC (polyanionic cellulose) as drilling mud additives, a few of scholars carried out some relevant work. Plank (1992) applied PAC into ordinary freshwater drilling fluid and analyzed temperature stability of freshwater drilling fluid. Bennion (2000) applied PAC into drilling fluid and analyzed effect of polyanionic cellulose on strata inhibitory. Huang (2011) analyzed effect of PAC on properties of the high-density water-based drilling fluid. Mahto (2004) applied PAC into fresh water and salt-water drilling fluid and analyzed effect of PAC on rheological properties of the drilling fluid. Wang (2008) applied PAC into alkaline drilling fluid to study various performance of drilling fluid. PAC is a renewable resource and has good application prospect (Ankara, 2005). So it is very important to understand the effect of PAC on filtration process of drilling fluid.The test was conducted by changing the content of the PAC in drilling fluid. The object of this paper is to understand effect of polyanionic cellulose on filtration process of the low solid-phase drilling fluid."

Human-caused global warming has become the environmental cause celebre of the early 21st century. The strong warming alarmist camp currently includes the United Nations, most Western governments, most of the free press, many large corporations (including Enron, before it failed), the major churches, most scientific organisations and a large portion of general public opinion. This phalanx of support notwithstanding there is no scientific consensus as to the danger of human-induced climate change. There is, therefore, a strong conflict between the level of public alarm and its scientific justification. How can this be? In a democracy, the media serve to convey to the public the facts and hypotheses of climate change as provided by individual scientists, governmental and international research agencies, and NGO and other lobby groups. In general, the media have promulgated an alarmist cause for climate change; they have certainly failed to convey the degree of uncertainty that is characteristic of climate science, or a balanced summary of the many essential facts that are relevant to human causation. Climate change is as much a geological as it is a meteorological issue. Natural climate changes, both warmings and coolings, are indeed a societal hazard. We usually deal with geological hazards by providing civil defence authorities and the public with accurate, evidence-based, general information about events like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and floods, and then by adapting to the effects when a damaging event occurs. As for other major natural disasters, the appropriate preparation for extreme climate events is to mitigate and manage the negative effects when they occur, and especially so for dangerous coolings. Attempting instead to æstop climate changeÆ by reducing human carbon dioxide emissions is a costly exercise of utter futility. Rational climate policies must be based on adaptation to dangerous change as and when it occurs, and irrespective of its sign or causation. The issue now is no longer climate change as such, the reality of which will always be with us. Rather, the issues are, first, the failure of the free press to inform the public about the true facts of human-caused climate change and of the dangers posed by natural climate change. And, second, the vested interests held by many of the groups of warming alarmists. These interests include not only the obvious commercial ones, but also the many scientists and science managers who have discounted or remained silent about the huge uncertainties of the human-caused global warming hypothesis because it suited them to do so. Public opinion will soon demand an explanation as to why experienced editors and hardened investigative journalists, worldwide, have melted before the blowtorch of self-induced guilt, political correctness and special interest expediency that marks the sophisms of global warming alarmists.
