Bull Lake is one of several saline lakes situated a few miles north of Rawlins, Carbon County, Wyo. (figs. and 2).. The Bureau of Mines conducted preliminary investigations of sodium sulfate deposits in many of the lakes and performed detailed work on Bull Lake. This investigation consisted of drilling 11 vertical holes through salt beds using diamond core bits and Iwan-type auger bits. Bull Lake lies in a shallow, closed depression in loosely consolidated sand. The salt beds, ranging in thickness from 2.5 to 26 feet, occur above a thick bed of shale of upper Cretaceous age. The salts appear to have been deposited in the lake from surface and subsurface drainage. The source of salt is undoubtedly the enclosing sedimentary rock's exposed to the west of the basin. Sodium sulfate in the deposits probably is present as mirabilite or Glauber salt (Na2SO4-10H2O). Chief impurities in the deposits arc mud and sand. Other soluble salts present average approximately 1 percent combined. Cores from the 11 holes were analyzed in the Bureau of Mines laboratories at Salt Lake City. Drilling totaled 512 feet. Results of analyses are given in the appendix.

A thermal imaging borehole probe was designed and fabricated for the purpose of obtaining thermal images, through smoke, of objects and people in underground mines. The effort was basically unsuccessful; electrical noise, and possibly thermal noise, interferred with the desired signals to the extent that spatial resolution in the images was unacceptable.

A number of challenges face platinum concentrator plant operators. These challenges include the increase in operating costs, the increase in smelter cost for the processing of concentrate, the shortage and cost of power, and the tightening of specifications on concentrate quality by the toll-smelting operations. Over the years the focus has moved from extracting the platinum group metals (PGM) from the Merensky Reef to the UG2 reef. This has a number of advantages, including the higher ?basket price? for UG2 concentrate, reduced mining cost per unit volume as a result of the higher density of UG2, and the reduction in overall concentrate tonnage to be smelted. In many cases the Merensky ore has been fully exploited and it makes sense for the focus to shift to the UG2 ore that can be accessed through the Merensky shaft infrastructure. The presence of relatively high levels of chromite in UG2 concentrate is, however, a major disadvantage due to the problems associated with smelting such a concentrate in conventional submerged arc furnaces. In addition to increasing the specification on the minimum PGM grade of concentrates, smelters have had to impose strict specifications on the levels of chromite in the concentrate. The threat of high penalties has forced concentrators to change their modus operandi, often resulting in a significant loss in recovery. The final concentrate grades and PGM recoveries are shown to vary significantly throughout the industry. The reasons for this include varying ore mineralogy and different operating philosophies. This would therefore imply that the opportunity exists to optimize the operations by considering fundamental aspects such as the PGM mineralogy and the application of appropriate technologies. By returning to the fundamentals of flotation and applying the findings of detailed process reviews, it has been possible to increase the concentrate PGM grade, reduce the concentrate chromite grade, and in some cases increase the recovery of PGM to concentrate. This paper presents case studies where this approach has been used to successfully optimize concentrator performance, resulting in lower operating cost and higher PGM production. "As part of a major reconstruction and expansion of the Majdanpek Copper Mine, an investigation and optimization of the flotation collector regime was undertaken. The flotation response of the major minerals to various reagents and the effect of pulp chemistry was studied from both a fundamental and practical point of view. These studies led to plant trials and the eventual adoption of a modified collector suite which improved both copper and gold recoveries.INTRODUCTIONThe Majdanpek Copper Mine processes 40,000 tons per day of ore containing about 0.43% cu. In addition to copper, the ore also contains recoverable quantities of molybdenite and gold. The mine has been in operation since 1961 and is the largest in Yugoslavia. It is currently undergoing major reconstruction and expansion. The flowsheet of the Majdanpek concentrator is shown on Figure 1.The ore body is variable in composition and changes in mill feed require proper control of operating variables to achieve the optimum metallurgical results. A detailed study including grindability, flotation response, and solid-liquid separation was carried out on several samples of the ore. Flotation response and the choice of reagent chemistry were found to be very important in achieving the highest recoveries of metal values. An automatic reagent control scheme insured that optimum dosages were used in the plant.The flotation collectors used at the present time include sodium isopropyl xanthate (SIPX), AERO 3302 Promoter and AERO 5415 Promoter. The addition of AERO 5415 to the reagent suite is a recent development and was based on the favorable results obtained in the extensive laboratory testing program conducted to establish the optimum reagent combination and dosages. Subsequent plant tests confirmed that AERO 5415 provided significant improvements in copper and gold recoveries. A description of the mineralogy of the Majdanpek ore and details of laboratory and plant metallurgical data are given in this paper. The chemistry of AERO 5415 Promoter and its interaction with minerals relevant to Majdanpek ore are also discussed."

"INTRODUCTION Mica is found in Georgia from the Fall Line in the central part of the State to the Valley and Ridge Province in the northwest. During the past 3 years, Georgia has been one of the chief producers of dielectric mica in the United States. Since January 1945, when prices were reduced, mining has decreased until practically no sheet mica is being recovered at present.The main mica-bearing regions in the State may be classified into three districts: The Thomaston district comprising Upson, Lamar, and Monroe Counties; the Ball Ground district, comprising Cherokee and Pickens Counties; and the Hartwell district, comprising Hart and Elbert Counties. There are numerous mines and prospects in all of these districts. All have been visited from time to time by engineers of the Bureau of Mines and by members of the Federal Geological Survey. The Federal Survey has made detailed maps and reports on all of the most important ones.This report will deal with five of these properties on which the Bureau of Mines has diamond-drilled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The treatment plant at Martha Mine was upgraded from a nominal throughput of 110tph (O.93mtpa) to 150tph (1.25mtpa) late 1999. Post-upgrade performance did not meet expectations when treating either the competent primary ore or the clay-rich oxide ore.   ò Plant throughput is constrained by milling capacity when treating the competent primary ore. This is not an issue at present as current plant feed is oxide ore from the top of the open-pit, but will become so in future years as the pit deepens. To counter this future threat, ball mill power has been restored to 1100kW through modifications to the drive train. The addition of a crushing circuit may also be necessary.   ò Plant throughput was originally constrained by thickener and leach/adsorption tank issues when treating the oxide are. Changes to plant equipment and operations has seen the removal of these constraints and throughput on this material is no longer a problem.   The most significant issue facing plant staff at present is the high silver grade and its impact on gold recovery. These high grades impact upon recovery through losses caused by insufficient leach and adsorption capacity. To counter this, the geology, mining, and milling teams are working together to blend the high grade silver zones with lower grade ores - this is seen to be the quickest and most cost effective way to deal with the issue. The plant design has also been evaluated with a view to modifying it to cope with the higher silver grades. The viability of these modifications will depend on cost and time (that is, the length of time to implement any modifications versus the length of time to mine out the high silver zones).

When one looks back and does assessments of what has been the key ingredient in achieving success in our safety efforts, there are many issues that spring to mind and cover a wide array of elements. One does not know which has the ultimate maximum effect. In his presentation yesterday, Alan Peers, our SHEQ leader, covered a lot of detail with the way we are managing safety at Modikwa. I have attempted to identify some of the key essentials in making the mine safe. Passion Safety is addressed with a passion that is unbelievable at times. When I get phoned because an incident has occurred and in reporting the incident, there are already action plans being put in place to prevent re-occurrences, you understand the commitment to put employees? safety first. You hear the disappointment in your subordinates? voices when they have to share the fact that an incident or accident has occurred.

The mechanical properties of rock samples of identical lithologicalcomposition may vary significantly due to existence of materialdiscontinuities. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the effect of material discontinuities on rock sample mechanical properties. The investigations consisted of detecting discontinuities, observing the failure mechanisms during uniaxial compressive strength tests, and analysing of the factors affecting the strength. A non-destructive testing method has been adopted to assist in thedetection of discontinuities. Laboratory testing proved that fractures leading to failures initiated on the detected discontinuities. The location, orientation, size, density and extent of the discontinuities contribute to different modes of failure and these affect the mechanical parameters of rock samples. Four modes of failure were distinguished for hard and brittlecylindrical rock samples. These modes were referred to as simple shear failure, multiple shear failure, multiple fracturing and vertical splitting. To evaluate the effect of discontinuities on mechanical parameters, the ratio of uniaxial compressive to tensile (Brazilian) strength was calculated and analysed for the different modes of failure. It was found that the value of the ratio depended on the mode of sample failure. The lowest value of the ratio was observed for shear mode of failure and the highest for vertical splitting mode of failure.

Mine seals are used extensively in underground coal mines to segregate mined-out areas and to isolate fire zones or underground areas that are susceptible to spontaneous combustion. Over the years, 30,000 mine seals have been erected in underground coal mines in the United States. Mine seals, along with rock dusting and ventilation, represent the fundamental means of preventing underground coal mine explosions. In this study the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology to determine if each of three test mine seals were uniformly constructed. Three mine seals representing different construction methods and materials (cast-in-place foamed cement; solid block, polyurethane foam and gravel; and wire mesh, rebar and gunite) were erected at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory’s underground mine as part of an on-going research program. The seals were imaged using GPR with 400-, 500-, 900-, and 1,000-MHz antennas. We found that variations in uniformity existed in the material for the cast-in-place foamed cement seal. Variations in uniformity also existed in the seal made from solid block, polyurethane foam and gravel. The post-processed radar records correlated closely with recovered core samples (areas of gravel and polyurethane foam, and areas containing only polyurethane foam). Finally, the radar records of the seal made of wire mesh, rebar and gunite showed the various components. The results of this work suggest that GPR could be used as a tool to evaluate mine seal characteristics and construction uniformity.

The viscosity of TiO2-containing blast furnace slags may increase rapidly (commonly referred to as thickening) under strong reducing conditions in the blast furnace. To elucidate the mechanisms for slag thickening, measurements have been made of changes in the composition and rheological properties of TiO2-CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO slags during the reduction process. The slag composition covered the range of 17–33 wt% TiO2, 9–19% Al2O3, 8–16% MgO and theCaO/SiO2from 0.8 to 1.4. The viscosities were measured using the rotating cylinder method at temperatures up to 1550ºC and the fusibility temperatures were determined from ‘breaks’ in the viscosity-temperature curves. The reduction of the slag was carried out in graphite crucibles at1500ºC for 2–6 hours The rheological properties of the slags during reduction were predominantly influenced by the slag basicity (CaO/SiO2), and the effect of other components depended largely on basic or acidic behaviour of the oxide. The reduction of TiO2in the slag by carbon was initially fast to formTi2O3, followed by further reduction to TiO and TiC. Correspondingly, the viscosity showed initially a slight decrease, followed by a gradual and then rapid increase. The thickening was found to be accelerated by an increase in TiO2content and a decrease in the CaO/SiO2in the slag. In addition to the existence of 1~3 wt% TiC, the thickened slags also had a significant amount of TiO (3~7 wt%), suggesting that TiO may play an important role in the ‘thickening phenomena’ ,possibly by forming solid solutions with TiC to significantly increase the number of solid particles in the heterogeneous slag. The porosities of fractured limestone reservoirs can be divided into two broad types in accordance with their effects on fluid distribution and fluid flow. In the coarse porosity, gravity segregation lakes place freely and the resistance to fluid flow is very small. In the fine porosity there is no segregation and a high resistance to flow, and it has relative permeability characteristics similar to tight sandstones. By analyzing the affect of the two porosities it is concluded that in some cases to recover the maximum amount of oil it is necessary to remove large quantities of gas from the reservoir by producing at high gas-oil ratios. In this manner the fine porosity is drained of its oil and the gas-oil contact drops slowly permitting higher production rates from the oil leg. Since this conclusion is contrary to widely accepted principles of conservation, a mathematical model (Fig. I) was constructed to duplicate the conditions desired. The behavior of the model indicates that under certain conditions it is possible to recover more oil by producing at high gas-oil ratios than by production at low gas-oil ratios, and that the rate of production is affected more by gas shut-offs than by the decrease in pressure (Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5). INTRODUCTION It has been noted that certain limestone reservoirs behave in such a way as to indicate that there are two distinct types of porous spaces available for fluid storage and fluid flow. Regardless of the nature of these porous spaces the distinguishing characteristic is that in one type of porous space there is definite gravity segregation between the oil and the gas; while in the other, the gas evolved tends to remain distributed equally throughout the reservoir. For the sake of simplicity the porosity in which gravity segregation takes place at a fast enough rate to affect the behavior will be called "coarse po- rosity", while that in which this is not so will be termed "fine porosity". The behavior of a reservoir of this type would be different than that of a sandstone reservoir, especially if most of the oil is in the fine porosity. Recently developed clay deposits that will impact regional and world markets are described. These deposits, their location, geology, and physical properties are delineated. Kaolins from the State of Para in Brazil and from Ukraine; bentonites from Argentina and India; and palygorskite and sepiolite from China are world class deposits that when processed using modem technology will produce excellent products. Other deposits that may affect regional markets are kaolins from China, Australia and Indonesia; bentonites from Georgia (formerly USSR) and China; and palygorskite from India and Ukraine. New ball clay deposits that will affect regional markets are in China and Indonesia.

"Mining with blast holes drilled upwards may be done to recover sill pillars, or for economic reasons when the distance between the levels is relatively large. If the rock is sufficiently competent to accommodate large stope size, the distance between sublevels could be increased to as much as drilling accuracy allows. The same drill drift can be used for the drilling of both down holes and up holes. In the case of down holes, the initial opening of the stope (drop raise) is not as much a problem as for the inverse drop raise for mining with up holes. This is because, with a drop raise, a lot of space is available at the toe for the blasted rock to expand. In addition, the raise can be blasted in many shots, thus allowing smaller blasts each time. Inverse drop raises are generally much more difficult to blast because of the limited space for muck flow, and must, therefore, be taken down in a single blast, requiring special considerations in order to ensure a success. A case study of a 29 m (95 ft) inverse drop raise successfully blasted in a single shot at Heath Steele Mines is described. The paper covers technical considerations such as drilling accuracy, hole deviation survey, delay extension and protection, initiation methods and initiation sequence. Finally, a novel method for creating the initial opening called ’slot drilling’ is presented. This method, inspired from LKAB in Sweden, consists of drilling a row of interconnected holes using a special guide mounted on a regular production drill hammer.With a case study of blasting an inverse drop raise of 29 m (95 ft) in one blast, this paper further discusses some technical issues that are critical for the development of inverse drop raises. A novel method for creating the initial opening with a slot of interconnected holes is also presented with the experience acquired at different mine sites across the Noranda group."

When a fire or explosion occurs in an underground coal mine, the atmosphere guickly becomes irrespirable. Highly irritant smoke and toxic levels of carbon monoxide and dioxide are produced, and consumption of oxygen by the fire or blast can reduce its concentration below that needed to support life. Work parties entering such a hazardous atmosphere for rescue or recovery operations are required to use, as their primary respiratory protection, a fully self-contained breathing apparatus of at least two hours duration. Apparatus used in this role has primarily been of the closed circuit rebreather type, using pressurized oxygen storage and chemical removal of expired carbon dioxide. Typically, commercial self-contained breathing devices for mine rescue have been heavy, bulky, and uncomfortable to use. The McCaa apparatus, long the industry standard, represented the best art available when it was First designed in 1926. It weighs 41 Ibs., protrudes about six inches above shoulder height, and provides breathing gas at temperatures up to 120° F. More recent designs, such as the Drager BG174A and Scott Rescue-Pak, using modern light weight materials and fabrication techniques have improved on all parameters of the McCaa to some extent. It was the intent of the Bureau of Mines, acting under the authority of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, to fund the development of a new self-contained breathing apparatus which would incorporate the best available technology and serve as a benchmark for future commercial designs, as the Bureau-sponsored McCaa had 45 years previously.

Polymer dispersants, also known as grinding aids, are widely used to reduce the viscosity of mineral particle suspensions and to improve energy efficiency during fine grinding. In this study, the effect of polymer dispersant with different molecular structure on the suspension properties in the wet stirred media milling of limestone was studied. The stability of suspension was studied by combining rheological and zeta potential measurements. The PDI value of polymers corresponds to the width of the molecular weight distribution so that low PDI corresponds to narrow MW distribution and high PDI to the wide one. In this study, two traditionally fractionated polymer dispersants with high PDI (over 2) and one novel polymer dispersant with low PDI (1.2) has been tested. It was noticed that dispersants worked as electrosteric stabilizators and prevented the agglomeration of ground limestone particles. The uses of dispersants could increase solids concentration used in the grinding experiments and at the same time lower the particle size and specific energy consumption. The obtained particle sizes were about 1 µm regardless of which dispersant was used or the amount of it. The novel dispersant with low PDI reduced viscosity most when compared with the traditionally fractionated polymer dispersants. Results indicated that even higher solids concentrations can be used at the same amount of dispersant when the novel low PDI polymer dispersant is used. Alternatively, lower dosage of novel low PDI dispersant can be used compared to traditionally fractionated dispersants.

"The work on the physical chemistry of steelmaking, as carried out at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with Carnegie Institute of Technology and, the Metallurgical Advisory Board, has covered a series of fundamental studies on the action of oxygen in liquid steel and the application of the findings to open-hearth operation. The staff has varied from 14 to 23 men per year, some of whom have been Bureau of Mines physical chemists and metallurgists, others research engineers of the Metallurgical Advisory Board, and the remainder graduate students employed as research fellows at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The work on the laboratory studies, and particularly on slag systems, has been in charge of G. R. Fitterer, associate metallurgist, Bureau of Mines, while the plant work has been under the direction of C. F. Christopher, research engineer of the Metallurgical Advisory Board. In all, some 16 physical chemists and metallurgists and 24 research fellows have taken part in the experimental work. Advantage has been taken of the opportunity for cooperation with the University of Pittsburg to have certain phases of this program made the subject of graduate work, particularly the laboratory studies on the deoxidation of steel with manganese-silicon alloys.The general method of studying oxygen has been, first, to determine the solubility of the various oxides in liquid steel. To date the solubility of Fe0 in steel has been determined, over a wide temperature range.3 The straight-line relationship in the plot of solubility versus temperature indicated that under a slag of 100 per cent Fe0 the oxygen was present in the steel as dissolved FeO. A further conclusion drawn from this work was that the solubility of FeO in the metal was proportional at a given temperature to the mol fraction of Fe0 in the slag if the slag contained a large excess of basic constituents. This result was determined from a study of the solubility of Fe0 under slags containing lime and iron oxide in various proportions. These data have been used extensively in determining the saturation of a bath of open-hearth steel under any conditions of slag composition, and results to be given later showed that the solubility curves are consistent with the results obtained in practice."

"INTRODUCTION Bauxite, in Appalachian Alabama, occurs in the Rock Run and Goshen Valley districts in Cherokee County; in Nences Creek Valley near Jacksonville; near Anniston in Calhoun County; north of Fort Payne in DeKalb County; near Ashville in St. Clair County; and near Talladega in Talladega County.In February 1942, Preston E. Cloud, Jr., assistant geologist, Federal Geological Survey, began a study of these bauxite deposits and the geology relating thereto.The Bureau of Mines established field headquarters at Piedmont, Calhoun County, in July 1942. Mineral agreements covering a total of 11,097 acres were executed with 15 landowners in the Rock Run district; 38 in the Goshen Valley district, covering 7,575.5 acres; and 3 in the Nances Creek Valley district, covering 988.5 acres. Drilling was done on.the properties of 9 land¬owners in the Rock Run district, and on the property of 1 landowner each in the Goshen Valley and the Nances Creek districts. Drilling began October 26, 1942, and ceased on May 17, 1943.Power drilling was supplemented by a labor crew that drilled hand-auger holes in shallow deposits and sampled .old shafts, mines, and mine dumps.In all, 222 holes for a total of 13,250 feet were drilled. Of these toles, 88 penetrated bauxite but too low in grade to constitute ore."

The year 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of Flash Smelting. The technology was operated on industrial scale for the first time at the Outokumpu Harjavalta copper smelter in Finland in 1949. Since then Flash Smelting technology, now owned and developed by Outotec Oyj and the first plant, now owned by Boliden Harjavalta Oy, have been evolving throughout history by optimizing the process for various feeds and raw-materials, as well as through developing the equipment and operating practices. Even though sustainability was not a popular theme during the first days of Flash Smelting, it has still been the key principle in guiding the development. This is well proven by the wide adoption of Flash Smelting for the processing of copper and nickel concentrates, mostly due to its ability to fulfil the economic and resource efficiency criteria demanded by its operators. This paper describes the history and improvements of the Outotec® Flash Smelting process by looking into the early days of operation and how the development of the process and equipment has taken place over time as a joint effort between the technology provider and the users of the technology. INTRODUCTION In the 1940s, Outokumpu Oy refined the concentrate produced in the Outokumpu mine into metallic copper initially in Imatra, and later from 1945 to 1949 in Harjavalta, based on the most modern electrical melting process of the world at that time. After the war, Finland lost a significant part of its hydropower production, and due to the increasing use of electricity, the availability of electricity weakened, and the price rose. To maintain Outokumpu's profitability, it was forced to look for a melting solution that was not based on electricity.

Unexpected roof falls often occur in the entries or intersections of active mining sections in underground mines. For large roof falls (greater than 20 ft in height), it becomes dangerous and impractical to clean up the rock debris and re-bolt the newly exposed roof strata. To help mine operators rehabilitate the roof fall areas in a quick, safe, and economic manner, Jennmar Corporation and Keystone Mining Services, LLC (KMS) designed, tested, and developed various impact-resistant (IR) steel set designs, as initially detailed in the proceedings of the 30th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM). Since then, the IR steel sets have been successfully installed in more than 100 roof falls in 43 different coal mines. Significant data has been obtained from these installations, enabling further refinement to and improvement on the design. This paper (1) updates drop test results of the IR lagging panel, (2) presents a case study of the performance of IR arch sets installed 56 months ago at a roof fall rehabilitation site, (3) demonstrates capacity evaluation of the IR steel set, and (4) outlines a preliminary applicability evaluation guideline of the IR steel set for a given roof fall condition. Field evaluation and structural numerical analysis indicate that impact capacity of the system is significantly higher than that of the IR lagging panel, as originally determined. It is concluded that, when evaluating the applicability of an IR steel set, ground control engineers should consider the IR lagging and steel set as an entire system and make a reasonable engineering decision based on actual roof fall geotechnical conditions.
