Between 1986 and 1989, at the request of the U. S. Bureau of Land Management, personnel from the U. S. Bureau of Mines Western Field Operations Center studied the highly-mineralized, 25,335-acre, Crack Canyon Wilderness Study Area (UT-060-028A), to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The 16-mi-long, 2-mi to 4-mi-wide stud/ area is on the southeast side of the San Rafael Swell, about 40 mi southwest of Green River, Emery County, southeast-central Utah. The study area is underlain by Mesozoic sedimentary beds. Uranium, the principle mineral resource, occurs in two formations. The principle uranium deposits are in mudstone, sandstone, and conglomerate lenses in the 22-mi-long outcrop of the Triassic Chinle Formation which parallels and straddles the northwest boundary of the study area, Some small low-grade uranium occurrences and an extensive gypsum deposit are hosted by the Jurassic-age rocks that underlie the southeast part of the study area.

From the perspective of metallurgical processing, gold ores can be classified into freemilling and refractory ores. Their extractive metallurgy is largely driven by mineralogical factors such as gold particle size, association with other minerals, coatings and rimmings, presence of cyanicides, oxygen consumers and preg-robbers, presence of refractory gold minerals, and invisible gold in sulphide and sulpharsenide minerals. Gold process mineralogy helps address issues and problems related to gold ore processing. It is widely used as a predictive and trouble-shooting tool in gold ore processing, and provides useful information on process selection, flowsheet development, recovery improvement, and reagent consumption optimization. By combining classic mineralogical techniques, modern instrumental analysis, and diagnostic metallurgy, the mineralogist is able to balance the various types of gold occurrence in an ore.

Direct mass spectrometric determination of alcohols in the presence of hydrocarbons has not been possible because of the similarity of hydrocarbon and alcohol mass spectra. Experiments have demonstrated that by converting the alcohols to their trimethylsilyl derivatives, characteristic mass spectra are obtained free of interference from hydrocarbon ion fragmentation. Hexa- methyldisilazane is the reagent selected for the conversion, An improved method of preparing the reagent is given, Mass spectrometric determination of alcohols as trimethylsilyl ethers now is not only possible without prior separation from other materials, but the range of the room-temperature mass spectrometer is also extended to include the C10 alcohol region. Water does not interfere because it is converted to hexamethyldisiloxane, which has its own distinctive mass spectral peak, Experience indicates that other compounds such as glycols, amines, and phenols probably could also be determined by mass spectrometry of their trimethylsilyl ethers. Studies on the similar detemination of phenols in coal oils have been started, When mass spectrometry is not available, gas-liquid chromatography of alcohols before and after their conversion to the trimethylsilyl derivatives probably could be performed. The preparation and properties of the trimethylsilyl derivatives of 23 alcohols, 2 glycols, 3 amines, and 1 mercaptan are detailed. Reduced intrusion-related gold deposits have become a new, low-grade, large-tonnage exploration target during the last decade. The best recognized examples of such deposits are recognized throughout the Tintina Gold Province of the northern North American Cordillera. Because such examples may have many features in common with orogenic gold deposits, such as anomalous Bi, W and Te, low salinity and CO2-rich ore fluids, and a spatial/temporal association with igneous rocks, confusion and controversy have now become commonplace in classification of many gold deposits formed along convergent margins. The best discriminators of IRGS are likely to be their: +        regional location in deformed shelf sequences on the inboard side of a series of accreted terranes and within terranes that also contain important tin and (or) tungsten deposits; +        local spatial association of gold ores with cupolas and contact aureoles of relatively reduced, alkaline-leaning, and volatile-rich plutons; +        post-deformational timing of gold deposition; +        extremely low sulfide content (commonly <1 vol %) of ores within igneous bodies and the outward zoning, through proximal skarns and to distal base metal-rich veins, from the causative pluton; and +        low grades (<1 g/t Au) of auriferous sheeted vein systems in pluton cupolas.

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority (MIA) Red Line has served greater Boston commuter needs from its Harvard Square terminus since its opening in 1912. Since then, the population of Boston's northwest area has increased substantially, and with this growth have come dramatic changes in the type and distribution of urban land uses, including the number of households, jobs, shopping and recreational opportunities; these changes have created a need for improved transportation. Extension of the Red Line to better serve these communities has been a topic of discussion for nearly 40 years. In November of 1977, the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) granted the MBTA approval and funding for the Red Line Extension Project. With funding in place, the MBTA proceeded with final engineering and construction of the section from Harvard Square to Alewife. When completed, the Red Line Extension will add 3.2 miles of new track to the MBTA system. Estimated final cost is about $400 million. On October 3, 1978, the MBTA received bids for the construction of Project 091-105, Harvard Square to Porter Square Tunnels and Shafts, which is part of the overall Red Line Extension. The Joint Venture of Morrison-Knudsen, White, Mergentime was the low bidder at $47,478,600. Official award of the contract came on October 25, 1978, with Notice to Proceed given October 31, 1978. The contract called for construction of two independent parallel concrete-lined tunnels in rock, soft-ground and mixed-face

"The Detour Lake Mine is located in northeastern, Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northest of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane. The mill processes a free milling gold ore using both gravity circuit and leaching with a state-of-the-art carbon-in-pulp circuit. The grinding circuit is a conventional SABC circuit with a tonnage of 55,000 mtpd at 95 microns with the addition of pre-crushing upstream of the SAG mill.The present paper will describe the methodology used to successfully prove that gold of the Detour Lake Mine ore is mostly concentrated into the fine size fraction of the blasted rocks. It will describe the various options possible to create value from this ore property.IntroductionThe purpose of this test work was to determine the grade of the pebbles and consider if there was value into discarding the pebbles and replacing the material by fresh feed.1. Pebble samplingThe pebbles were sampled and assayed for grade every day for 3 months. After 3 months of sampling, the results showed that the pebbles only carried 28% of the fresh feed grade. This phenomenon can possibly be explained by the fact the gold is located into area of fracture in the rocks.January-March 2014 – Pebble assay average• Line #1 = 0.222 g. Au/t• Line#2 = 0.275 g. Au/t• Head grade = 0.88 g. Au/t2. Crushing and grinding circuit surveysWith the above information, a grinding circuit survey was planned. The purpose of the survey was to build a JKSIMMET model of the grinding circuit for mill optimization but also to understand the deportment of gold into various size fractions that may explain why there is so little gold in the pebbles. All streams and size fractions was analysed for particle size analysis and for gold.Since Detour has dual grinding lines, both circuits were sample at the end of May. Two supplemental survey of the secondary crushers were also done and a survey of the gyratory crusher."

The COALSTAR Project, which operated from November 1981 to December 1982, was a research and development project aimed at providing a reliable and inexpensive means of monitoring various waste site conditions via the GOES satellite system. The GOES system provides data transfer from unattended isolated sites where neither power nor telephone lines exist. The reliability and resolution of the data received while using the satellite link were excellent; however, the site instrumentation gave considerable trouble. The disastrous failure of a large coal waste embankment in 1972 led the Bureau of Mines to undertake a comprehensive program to reduce the likelihood of such an occurence again. Part of this program involved the installation of instruments to monitor the stability of a specially-selected embankment operated by Armco Incorporated near Montcoal, West Virginia. Initially, the instruments were monitored by normal telephone lines and used normal commercial power from the local utility. The project described here was initiated to replace this monitoring system with an unmanned, solar-powered data collection system which transmitted data via satellite to a central computer facility. The satellite data network is the National Earth Satellite Service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

This paper presents a cost comparison of the driven pile foundations for two large Wisconsin Department of Transportation (?WisDOT?) projects in Milwaukee, Wisconsin: the Marquette Interchange South Leg, and the Canal Street Viaduct. The projects? geology is fairly similar, but their methods/approaches to pile foundation design and installation differ. Although the Marquette Interchange South Leg had deeper poor soils, its pile design was more-cost-effective than the Canal Street Viaduct?s. Potential reasons for cost differences between the projects are identified, and the effect of the different design and construction approaches on economics is discussed.

Estimating reserves and quantifying resources stand as pivotal and intricate endeavours within the realm of coal mining operations. Intricate geological formations compound the challenges in resource estimation, thereby complicating reserve calculations. The uncertainties tied to geological attributes of coal, encompassing parameters like tonnage and coal quality, wield significant sway over resource and reserve computations within coal mines. This research delves into the domain of geological uncertainties, with a specific focus on calorific value, aiming to numerically characterise resources and reserves within an open-pit coal mine situated in Indonesia. To quantify resources, the coal seam geometry underwent simulation via a multipoint geostatistical technique known as single normal equation simulation. A geologically established coal seam served as the training image for generating 20 equiprobable coal models. To simulate CV, 50 realisations were generated for each simulated coal seam, utilising sequential Gaussian simulation. Deviations of the simulated coal seams ranged from -0.07% to 5.48% in comparison to the training image. The CV simulation yielded an average value of 5,920.29 kcal/kg, accompanied by a standard deviation of 586.54 kcal/kg. However, the average CV spanned from 5,305.26 kcal/kg to 6,526.55 kcal/kg across diverse simulations. For reserve calculation within the context of geological uncertainties, an algorithm rooted in maximum flow graph theory was employed to construct the ultimate pit for the coal mine. Within this final pit, the average stripping ratio was 1.62, coupled with a CV value of 6,019.66 kcal/kg. When juxtaposed with the deterministic model, the findings underscore that the stochastic ultimate pit delineates a more expansive excavation, accompanied by a heightened undiscounted cash flow.

For the first time in its history, the George A. Fox Conference let its focus venture away from the friendly confines of the East Coast of the United States to spend part of the one-day conference looking at projects from around the globe. With a record-setting attendance of 377 people, the conference, titled ?Tunneling: An international perspective,? opened with a keynote speech from special guest In-Mo Lee, professor, Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. He is also the president of the ITA-AITES. In a sweeping presentation, Lee walked the packed audience through some of the most fascinating and challenging projects in his home country. Among the projects he spoke about were Korea?s longest railway tunnel, the Solahn Tunnel and the Inje Tunnel, a freeway tunnel that is 11.94 km (7.4 miles) long.

"Stillwater Mining Company recovers platinum and palladium from their Nye Montana operations. Mining first commenced at Nye in 1987 at a milling rate of 455 t/d (500 stpd). The plant was expanded in 1995 with the replacement of the ball mill and the addition of flotation capacity to increase mill throughput to 1820 t/d (2000 stpd). The applications for platinum and palladium have increased in recent years particularly in the automotive industry and the supply of the metals has remained fairly constant with prices for both platinum and palladium increasing and remaining very stable. In 1997 Stillwater initiated the expansion of their operations to increase production of platinum and palladium. Projects were initiated to expand production at the Nye operations, increase smelter and refining capacities at the Columbus facilities and to develop the extension of the orebody at the East Boulder site. This paper will discuss the changes at the Nye concentrator which were completed to increase production from 1820 t/d (2000 stpd) to 2730 t/d (3000 stpd) and eliminate some of the process bottlenecks.IntroductionStillwater Mining Company is mining the only significant primary source of PGMs outside of South Africa. The J-M Reef is an extensive mineralized zone containing PGMs that has been traced over a strike length of about 43 km (27 miles) in the southwest region of Montana. Stillwater controls the entire PGM mineralized zone.Johns-Manville geologists discovered palladium and platinum in the early 1970’s. In 1979, a Manville subsidiary entered into a partnership with Chevron, USA to develop the project. In 1 987, operations at the Stillwater property near Nye, Montana commenced."

Expanded version of a paper originally presented at the Alluvial mining conference, London, 11-13 November 1991 and published in Alluvial mining, Barking: Elsevier Applied Science for IMM, 1991, p.115-156. The usual measure of performance in gold and tin dredging is the R/E factor. It compares actual production or recovered grade for a given period with that estimated from the original sampling. The factor is a multiple of four component factors, each ideally approaching 1.00. The factors are concerned with estimation, selection, excavation and treatment. The estimation factor reflects the errors involved in determining the grade and depth of single drill-holes or pits. An optimum selection factor is achieved by a higher drilling density. The excavation factor is affected by failure of the dredge to excavate the total volume contained within its course. The required dredge throughput rate influences not only the success in digging recovery but also the treatment factor. No two alluvial deposits are the same, but, in general, the greatest divergence from 1.00 is invariably demonstrated by the estimation factor. A major divergence in one of the other factors may also be the cause of the R/E factor being significantly different from 1.00. Introduction Aggregate mining impacts on water resources are a source of concern to local governments. To evaluate those impacts, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conducted a four-year study at three gravel pits (two alluvial and one beach-ridge) and five quarries (flat-lying Paleozoic limestone). This research provides the first comprehensive look at aggregate mining impacts on ground-water systems in Minnesota. The results will be used by government officials making permitting decisions about aggregate operations and by responsible owners of aggregate mines as they plan their operations to avoid conflicts with neighbors and with resources dependent on ground water and surface water. Natural aggregate (crushed stone, sand, and gravel) is a vital part of our economic infrastructure in Minnesota. Aggregate is used for road and bridge construction and in a variety of building materials. In 2003, the value of construction sand and gravel and crushed stone in Minnesota was approximately $245,000,000. As Minnesota’s economy continues to expand, the demand for aggregate will continue to grow. Sand and gravel pits are located in every county in Minnesota. In 1990, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Division of Minerals (DNR Minerals), estimated the number of active and inactive operations at 1500 with the view that this number was likely too low. Quarries for mining limestone, dolomite, sandstone, and hard rock (granite and quartzite) are found in 34 counties. A 1990 DNR Minerals inventory found 165 active operations, 88 percent of which were limestone quarries (Nelson and others, 1990). That same inventory counted 1,367 inactive operations, 70 percent of which were limestone quarries. Aggregate mining is an extractive use of resources: mining alters the landscape and its natural hydrologic system. When a new pit or quarry is proposed or when an existing operation needs to expand, local governments and citizens typically have many questions about the impacts mining might have. Local governments, which are responsible for reviewing these operations, rarely have the budgets to hire experts to evaluate potential impacts of quarry and gravel pit proposals. The Minnesota Legislature’s Aggregate Resources Task Force identified that local government units (LGUs) often lack the expertise to assess ground-water models (Southwick and others, 2000).

At the heart of the mining process are a number of basic and fundamental tasks whose regular and repeated performance constitute the mining cycle. As will be discussed presently, these tasks are the basic components of the mining system. Section 9, Production Operations, provides the mine designer and engineer with an understanding of these tasks and with sufficient design principles to allow this person to create an efficient mine system. This section is meant to be an introduction and adjunct to subsequent sections that describe specific mining systems. However, sufficient design information is included here for the independent design of mine systems that may not be described elsewhere or for subsequent verification of existing designs. For the purposes of this section, mining subsumes excavation; thus this material applies to any excavation process. Accordingly, this section is written in general enough terms to include both surface and underground mining. It may be used also for civil engineering excavations that often involve the same steps. Obviously, the actual procedures undertaken in any specific mining system will appear to be very different from those taken in any other system. This is certainly true when comparing surface with underground methods. Yet the fundamental principles are often the same. This segment is written to explicate the basics. Wherever appropriate, the section will suggest the differences between the application process to surface or to underground mining.

Gold mineralisation in the gabbro sills is mainly stratabound to quartz- and Fe-rich, granophyric-textured units and is sited in undeformed, brittle quartz vein sets, which form pipe-like orebodies. Hydrothermal wallrock alteration consists of hornblende-plagioclase-calcite-quartz with minor biotite, garnet and chlorite and with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite as the dominant sulphides. Geothermobarometric data suggest that gold was deposited at around 520 degrees C at 2.8-3.8 bar. Mineralisation is thought to have occurred during amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Fluid inclusion and isotope data indicate that gold mineralisation was the result of deposition from a low-salinity H2O-CO2-CH4 fluid of either metamorphic or magmatic origin. Although the Three Mile Hill deposit differs from others in the area in its wallrock-alteration assemblages, peak-metamorphic timing of gold deposition and distinct geochemical associations it forms a brittle stratabound ore body which suggests structural and gold-depositional mechanisms in common with those of the other gabbro-hosted gold deposits

The evaluation of raw materials in terms of quality profile, mineralogical character and mechanical properties is of great importance to the cement industry. The variability of their chemistry and structure is among the decisive design parameters in the choice of any mining, handling and preblending systems. Furthermore, clinker and cement production require sound estimates of the above parameters, to help produce some appropriate and realistic raw mix configurations and achieve minimum standard deviation of the major components. This paper addresses this subject from the perspective of a cement producer and presents the principles of a methodology aimed at optimizing mine planning and process design. Finally, results from case studies on actual sedimentary deposits currently in operation are discussed.

The current Stoilensky magnetite concentrator comprises a three-stage crushing circuit followed by three stages of ball milling, grinding and concentration to produce a magnetite concentrate with 66.5% iron (Fe). The plant is built in four lines, three lines having four mills and one line with five mills, to treat 32 Mt/y of ore and produce 13.9 Mt/y of concentrate.NLMK, the owner, is Russia’s third largest steel maker and while the ore from the Stoilensky Mining and Beneficiation Plant (SGOK) provides the bulk of their supply, they still must buy ore from external sources at world prices. A decision was taken to expand the SGOK operation to supply all the NLMK concentrate, including the production of pellets.To commence the expansion, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) were introduced as a fourth stage of crushing ahead of the first ball mill. This was a relatively low capital cost expansion and increased production by 12 to 15%, the cost being much less than an additional grinding line. The importance of this development was that earlier introductions of HPGRs in Russia had presented several problems so there was some reluctance to the initial concept. The even greater significance was that nearly every magnetite plant in Russia had a three-stage crushing circuit so the successful introduction of HPGRs was of interest to many operators.The design was developed by a team, consisting of Worley Parson, Mineralconsult and PiterGORproject (PGP), for the first four units to fit inside existing building structures. The first two units were commissioned in March 2016 and the next two units in May 2016, and production improved by over 12%. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mimes monitored rock mass response to mining of an experimental underhand longwall stope in Hecla Mining Co.'s Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. This stope design, the Lucky Friday underhand longwall (LFUL), was proposed as a means of controlling rock bursting while also allowing increased mechanization of mining operations. Instruments were specifically manufactured to monitor three geomechanical factors (backfill performance, ramp stability, and rock mass response) that directly affect the success of stope design. Despite considerable difficulties with instrument installation and survival in the harsh mine environment, especially within the stope fill, sufficient information was collected to suggest that the LFUL method was successful in achieving project goals. This conclusion, in addition to favorable economic and operational evidence, led the mine to adopt the method throughout the mine. Indeed, this study and mining experience suggest that underhand longwall mining could be considered a feasible mining method for rock-burst-prone ground throughout the Coeur d'Alene District. Further Reports of Investigations (RI) in this series present in-depth analyses of the effects of backfill on rock bursting and calibration of a stope numerical model.
