In this paper, we developed and implemented a fuzzy logic expert system capable of evaluating the degree of sustainability within the context of gold mining operations. The newly introduced approach of evaluating sustainability in the gold mining industry has the merit of sufficiently handling diverse, sustainable, development-related qualitative and quantitative data owing to fuzzy logic technology capabilities in dealing with linguistic syntax. The economic, environmental and social indicator inputs were independently evaluated and then combined with the aid of fuzzy logic to provide an overall sustainability index on a scale of zero to one. A total of 66 independent indicators were identified and applied in our model. The novelty of this work lies in providing a coherent numerical and automated approach in evaluating sustainability in the context of gold mining operations. In addition, the model can aid policy- and decision-makers in arriving at consistent decisions regarding the degree of sustainability on various aspects of gold mining operations. The functionality of this model will be illustrated through several examples.

Les remblais en pâte cimentés sont de plus en plus utilisés dans les exploitations minières souterraines. Une autre alternative d?utilisation du remblai en pâte consiste à le pomper et à le stocker dans des empilements de surface. En plus d?avoir des avantages d?un point de vue de stabilité physique des ouvrages, le remblai en pâte cimenté en surface permettrait également de stabiliser les contaminants dans la matrice du remblai à l?aide du processus de solidification et de stabilisation. Dans cette étude, des remblais en pâte constitués d?un résidu minier sulfuré renfermant beaucoup d?arsenic et de différents liants ont été testés afin d?évaluer la stabilisation des contaminants dans la matrice de remblai. La méthode utilisée pour évaluer la stabilisation et la solidification des contaminants est le test de lixiviation en extracteur de Soxhlet. Les résultats géochimiques issus de ces essais ainsi que la caractérisation chimico-minéralogique des remblais lixiviés ont été analysés pour comprendre les phénomènes chimiques présents dans les remblais durant le temps de cure. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les sulfures présents dans les remblais étudiés (pyrite FeS2 et arsénopyrite FeAsS) s?oxydent et provoquent la dissolution des hydrates les plus vulnérables (dissolution de la portlandite Ca(OH)2 et/ou décalcification des gels CSH). Le calcium produit permet de précipiter les sulfates (essentiellement sous forme de gypse plus ou moins hydraté) et l?arsenic sous forme d?arséniates de calcium plus stables. Les différents liants utilisés donnent des résultats différents en termes de stabilisation et de solidification qui seront discutés dans cet article.

This paper describes a simple finite element (FE) modelling approach which leads to the computation of seismic energy release rate (ERR) and strain energy storage rate (ESR) which result from mining. The concept of critical strain energy is introduced as a means to help evaluate the strainburst potential in mine structures. A new, energy-based, burst potential index (BPI) is proposed. The use of ERR, ESR and BPI is demonstrated by a cut-and-fill stope case study. The merits of using such energy parameters in the interpretation and analysis of strainburst phenomena are discussed. While the study gives promising results, site-specific back analyses would be required to first calibrate the model and fit it with the local mine conditions, before it can be adopted as a routine design tool.

Extensive field studies have been carried out to investigate the pillar fire problems in one coal mine in India. A Thermal IR gun and a Thermovision camera have been employed for thermal scanning to assess the state of heating in selected pillars. Special sampling set-ups have been designed to collect gas samples from the holes drilled into the selected pillars and the multigas detector is used to analyse the composition of samples in situ. In order to predict the spontaneous heating in coal pillars, different gas ratios have been calculated and it has been observed that some of the established gas ratios, viz. Graham?s ratio, Young?s ratio etc. have resulted in negative values in samples containing high amounts of methane. The modified gas ratios have been proposed which will be useful for predicting the pillar fires. These ratios may also be used for assessing the condition of fires in sealed-off areas.

IT has been said the British Empire was built on British Coal. In all the postwar planning for Great Britain the necessity for producing cheap coal and the prosperity of the coal industry are given first consideration. On Jan. 23, 1945, there was released in London a "Report to the Colliery Owners" which had been awaited with great interest. This was entitled "A Plan for Coal" and was the recommendation of Robert Foot, chairman of The Mining Association (Colliery Owners), prepared at their request. Presentation of the "Plan" at this time is particularly significant as it is an answer to the demand for nationalization of the coal industry by the Labour Party and at the same time is a carefully considered program for postwar reconstruction, prosperity, and stability. In the words of Mr. Foot, If the coal industry for the first ten years after this war is to find itself in a situation similar to the one it occupied for the ten years following the last war, with its record of disputes, strikes, stoppages, short-time working, unemployment, and, with it all, a completely insufficient margin of profit, and all the insecurity and instability in our basic industry that was brought with them, it is goodbye to any real prospect of full employment, social security, and high standard of living. To present an elaborate review of the conditions which have brought to a crisis the unfortunate situation in the British coal industry is here unnecessary, but certain of the salient points

Dense medium cyclones are the preferred means for cleaning 1/2 in. x 14Mesh to 28Mesh (12.7 mm x 1.0 mm to 0.6 mm) raw coal and are becoming a common choice for cleaning raw coal from a nominal top size of 2-1/2 in. to 3 in. (63.5 mm to 76.2mm) down to 14 Mesh to 28Mesh (1.0 mm to 0.6 mm). During the last ten years, dense medium cyclone circuitry design has undergone changes which have combined to improve process efficiency. This paper describes these improvements and compares present day design with the design used prior to the mid 1980's. Improvements in the following areas are described: Raw coal desliming, cyclone configuration, drain and rinse applications, dilute medium circuitry, and instrumentation and control.

The global bentonite industry is a dynamic market balancing a range of end uses with an ever growing number of bentonite producers. In addition, markets in developed countries are elevating the level of detail and transparency for materials reporting in programs, such as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restrictions of Chemicals (REACH) program in the European Union. Bentonite is impacted by programs of this nature. The majority of the bentonite products sold around the world are sodium bentonites. These sodium bentonites consist either of natural sodium bentonites, or naturally occurring bentonite dominated by divalent interlayer cations (Ca+2 andMg+2) subsequently exchanged with sodium cation. The latter variety is often called “sodium-activated“, or “soda-ash treated” bentonite. Once exchanged with sodium, these bentonites are often difficult to distinguish from natural sodium bentonites using common commercial testing protocols. Due to their similar colloidal and bulk chemical properties; the lack of test procedures designed specifically to identify this product feature; and the failure to completely or effectively explain their differences, sodium-activated bentonite is often considered to be identical to natural sodium bentonite in the industry. This article defines both general types of sodium bentonite and presents a technique that could serve the industry as a tool to confirm the variety of sodium bentonite in question. Specifically, geochemical properties such as carbon (C13/C12) and oxygen (O18/O16) isotopic ratios can distinguish activated, even slightly activated bentonites, from bentonites not introduced to additional sodium during manufacture.

The extraction of quartz from siliceous iron ores by dissolution in sodium hydroxide solution has been described in detail in AIME Transactions. l923 data reported covered the temperature range from 230-416°F, where a continuous increase in the amount of silica extracted with increase in temperature was found. It is the purpose of this paper to describe some unexpected results of more recent work exploring principally the range of 500600°F where higher rates and greater amounts of silica extraction were antici-p ted. In brief, the experimental procedure consists in digesting the ore under pressure in solutions of sodium hydroxide, filtering the suspension and weighing and analyzing the dried residue for iron content. The amount of extraction is calculated from the weight loss or from the iron analysis of the residue and that of the original ore.

During the course of evaluations by the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s Roof Control Division, the controls on ground instability were investigated at surface and underground limestone mines throughout the eastern and southern United States. Structural geologic features, including joints and faults, were identified by basic geologic mapping as primary controls on highwall and back instability in surface and underground limestone mines. By comparing the spatial orientation of discontinuities and internal angle of friction with the orientation of highwalls on a stereonet, the potential for sliding, toppling, and raveling failures was evaluated in a semi-quantitative fashion. Structural geologic mapping identified faults and joints, which dismembered the back and were associated with ground instability, in underground mines. This paper documents the importance of recognizing structural geologic controls on ground stability in limestone mines, advocates basic geologic mapping as a critical component of ground control programs at surface and underground limestone mines, and provides examples of simple stability evaluations using the stereonet method.

Cementitious seals are made of foamed cements with strength ranging from 100 to 600 psi. These cementitious seals are usually used at locations where the seal will be subjected to some convergence, assuming that this material can absorb entry closure without compromising the structural integrity of the seal. Prior to 2006, Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) conducted full-scale tests on various cementitious seals designed to meet or exceed the 20-psi horizontal static load requirements of the old 30 CFR1 75.335. Both hydrostatic and dynamic loading tests were conducted. The structural response (pressure and displacement readings) obtained from these tests were recorded. The stability of the cementitious seal is based on balancing the load applied to the face of the seal from the explosion against the shearing resistance at the seal/rock interface. Therefore, the properties of the seal/rock interface, such as stiffness, cohesion, friction, etc. are critical to determine the stability of a cementitious seal. These properties are usually assumed by the researchers in their models. This paper emphasizes the importance of having the correct properties of seal/rock interface in the numerical modeling. FLAC 3D models were developed to simulate Celuseal2 cementitious seals subjected to both hydrostatic and dynamic loadings. Using the hydrostatic and dynamic loading test data conducted at LLEM, the static and dynamic properties of the seal/rock interface were back calculated. The FLAC 3D models showed good agreement with the test results.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss continues to be one of the most pervasive health problems in the mining industry, despite over 25 years of regulation. One of the loudest pieces of equipment used in underground mining is the continuous mining machine. Noise sample data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration indicate that 42% of noise overexposures between 2000 and 2005 involved continuous mining machine operators. Previously conducted field and laboratory tests have determined that the continuous mining machine conveyor system is a dominant noise source. Loud impacts occur as the conveyor chain flight bars, used to move the mined aggregate, traverse their path from the top to the underside of the conveyor deck. Various noise control treatments have been applied to abate noise caused by the conveyor system. A durable polyurethane coating has been developed for the conveyor flight bars, resulting in a time-weighted average reduction of 3 dB(A) for an eight-hour work shift. In an attempt to further reduce continuous mining machine operator overexposures, a similar urethane coating has been applied to the tail roller component of the conveyor system. Laboratory results showed a 2 dB(A) reduction in sound power levels, but the component failed during underground durability testing. An outer steel sleeve has been added to the urethane coating of the tail roller to enhance wear resistance during mining. The urethane jacketed tail roller is the latest effort, combined with previous noise treatments, to bring the continuous mining machine into compliance with federal noise regulations.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has, primarily through its contract program, used large-scale centrifuges to determine design criteria for tailing embankments. The centrifuge runs were made at two installations, the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England and Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM. The major problems considered were as follows: slope stability of embankments, modeling erosion and seepage, use of the phreatic surface level to ascertain the validity of centrifuge modeling, and the effects of compaction and weathering on a tailings embankment. This report summarizes the results of the four test series conducted at University of Cambridge and Sandia National Laboratories. A review of prior centrifuge applications to mining problems is included. Consideration is given to future centrifuge application to mining problems in both soil and rock mechanics.

Introduction Continuous monitoring techniques have been used in the US and abroad for many years. A continuous miner has a monitor that measures methane and automatically gives a warning if the methane exceeds 1%. It deenergizes the continuous mining machine automatically at a maximum concentration of 2%. Main fans are also continually monitored to ensure operation. Alarms may also be given at a remote location should a fan slow or stop. The systems being developed can continuously monitor various gases and equipment throughout the mine and transmit pertinent data to a surface monitoring station. At this station, conditions throughout the mine can be monitored and, in some instances, controlled. These are known as Mine Wide Monitoring Systems (MWMS). History The use of environmental monitoring systems began in 1976 when a federal court approved the petition of modification to use belt air at the face. The first mine to receive a modification did install a system to supplement existing safeguards. Later, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted tests dealing with the use of belt air. Findings from these tests are being used to set guidelines as requirements of a petition. These requirements include: • Velocity of air has to be 0.25 to 1.5 m/sec (50 to 300 fpm); • Monitors will be installed at each belt drive and tailpiece and at intervals not to exceed 610 m (2000 ft); and • An alarm level of 10 ppm, above the ambient level is appropriate. The early uses of environmental monitoring could only be used outby the last open crosscut. That may be a reason for an initial slow growth of these systems. In June 1982, MSHA began evaluating systems that could be used in returns to ensure that monitoring systems being used in areas where permissible equipment is required does not of itself pose an explosion hazard. This is known as the Mine Wide Monitoring Systems Evaluations and Sensor Classification program. The evaluations and classifications granted are based on electric currents and voltages. Use of mine wide monitoring systems The environmental aspect of MWMS in today's coal industry deals with carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), and air velocity. Just as all mines are different and encounter different problems, the MWMS are diverse and can be used to provide necessary data in all areas of coal mines. Mine operators in an ultragassy seam, for example, may be concerned with monitoring methane, while a mine that used diesel equipment may want to continuously monitor for diesel contaminants. In a mine with roof fall problems, airflow monitors may be helpful as an indication of whether the air is flowing in its normal course and at its normal volume. Today's MWMS can monitor any or all of these parameters. Most systems can be expanded as mining needs require. For example, a mine is now being monitored for methane and five years from now CO monitoring would help increase safety. It may be possible to use the same system by adding additional equipment. In the US, 30 environmental monitoring systems were installed from May 1985 through May 1986. In 1984 and 1985, there were 38 and 44 environmental monitoring systems in operation, respectively. PRESIDENT SCOTT TURNER officiated as chairman of the opening session on mining methods, Monday morning, Feb. 15. The first paper was that of Max H. Barber on open-pit mining in the Lake Superior district, read by C. F. Jackson. W. L. Taylor stated that liquid-oxygen explosive had been tried but that the operators are satisfied with the explosives used; lb. of dynamite breaks one ton of rock. Although black powder is considered the most effective explosive, the factor of safety has decided in favor of high explosives. Lucien Eaton told of the Michigan Lime and Chemical Co.'s large L. 0. X. plant at Rogers City, Mich. Mr. Turner referred to this plant, also said that the Bureau of Mines is shortly to issue Bulletin 349 completely covering the use of L. 0. X. from its inception. W. D. B. Motter, Jr., gave some items concerning Chuquicamata, Chile. Twelve years ago the blasts moved 850,000 to 1,000,000 tons, but average shots now move 250,000 to 300,000 tons. One pound of L. 0. X. breaks 3.7 tons, against 3.1 tons by dynamite. Another speaker told of some large dynamite blasts in open pits, one of 360,000 Ib. in March, 1931, and another of 430,000 lb. to be shot in 1932. Tests have been made to determine the effect of large shots on the surrounding country. Mr. Taylor said that 4- and 5-yd. shovels were preferable to those of 8 yd.; their performance is better and cost is lower.

The report recommends criteria for the design of safe surface mine haulage roads. Information relevant to road design at surface mine sites delineates vertical and horizontal alignment; subbase and surface materials; drainage; cross-slope, superelevation; runaway vehicle protection; and road and vehicle maintenance criteria. An appendix Is included which details the study methods used in compiling the final report information. A bibliography following the main text lists literature referenced for the report data and which is available as a valuable tool for use by individuals involved in haul road design.

Several methods exist by which the capacity of a dense media separation (DMS) plant can be improved: 1) Increase the feed rate in spite of efficiency 2) Replace with bigger equipment 3) Add whole new module 4) Replace total plant 5) Change over to four shift/ seven days per week roster 6) Replace with alternative process 7) Increase the availability and utilization Options 1 ? 6 have varying degrees of cost implications. The seventh option would seem to be the easiest. Normally it is also the function of the plant operating and maintenance team to maximize this. Usually higher operating and maintenance cost are associated with an increase in these parameters. A general principle that is applicable to plants and systems is that as the complexity increases, the total availability decreases. By simplifying the flow line it may be possible to reduce cost while at the same time increase the availability and utilization. The typical standard DMS flow line contains components that compensate for the variance in pump performance or for the inefficient recovery of ferrosilicon with additional equipment. A fluidized countercurrent ion-exchange system was developed, operated, and evaluated by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. The system consisted of integrated multiple-compartment absorption and elution columns in which the solution flows were continuous except for short periods when resin increments were withdrawn. The exchange of uranyl carbonate between a simulated in situ uranium leach liquor and a strong-base ion-exchange resin together with the subsequent elution with an ammonium chloride solution was studied. The effects of the number of sections, section height, amount of resin withdrawal, solution flow rate, and column diameter were investigated. The kinetic and equilibrium relationships for the absorption and elution steps were also examined. The experimental data indicate a strong interdependence between variables. Solution retention time appears to be a major limiting variable in the absorption process, while resin residence time is the determining factor in the elution process. The column was efficient over a range of conditions, but close control was needed for optimum operation.

Electronic noses are being used in the processing industries and in fields such as environmental and occupational hygiene to detect a wide variety of problems from contaminated foods to toxic chemicals in soils. Recently, research has been conducted into the use of these devices for detecting spontaneous combustion in mines with the aim of producing a method for early detection of a developing heating. Gas samples were collected from both SimtarsÆ 16 m3 large-scale spontaneous combustion reactor and the University of QueenslandÆs two-metre column. The samples were analysed using an electronic nose. GCMS and HPLC were used to identify some of the components present. A number of issues both from a practical mine situation and a scientific standpoint have been identified that need to be addressed before these devices can be used to detect a developing heating. Aluminised bags routinely used in the mining industry to collect gas samples for analysis of the permanent gases are not suitable for use with electronic nose devices as they have a æfingerprintÆ from the polymer lining that interferes with the coal heating fingerprint. Tedlar bags used for environmental gas sampling are also unsuitable due to their fingerprint. Gas samples can be collected in glass gas bulbs with aluminium seals and successfully analysed. However the aluminium foil used to seal the bulbs is a restricted item in underground mines. It was also found that the volatile organic fingerprint of the coal heating was extremely weak at temperatures below 130¦C. Before a useful application can be developed, further investigation into the chemical species present in the off-gases from Australian coals is required.
