Water availability is essential for mining and minerals processing. To provide government and industry with recent data for water use planning and management, the Bureau of Mines canvassed a number of U.S. producers of nonfuel minerals to determine their water use in 1984. Data were analyzed and compared with previously published data in order to examine historical trends in water utilization in the nonfuel minerals industry and to estimate water requirements in the year 2000. Total water use in the domestic nonfuel minerals industry during 1984 was estimated at 2,267 billion gal, of which 571 billion gal was new water and 1,696 billion gal recirculated water. The largest users of water were the phosphate rock, iron ore, copper, sand and gravel, and crushed stone industries, together accounting for almost 90% of total used. More than one-half of all water was used in Florida, Michigan, and Minnesota. In the year 2000, total water use will amount to an estimated 2,679 billion gal, of which 810 billion gal will be new water and 1,869 billion gal recirculated water. A device for detecting carbon monoxide at ppm levels is described which is based on the measurement of infrared absorption at 4.65 microns. The unique feature of the nondispersive infrared instrument is contained in the optical design which includes a confocal cavity, increasing the effective optical path length by a large factor, thus greatly reducing the required package size. The cavity has the effect of reducing the total amount of radiation passing to the detector, but at the same time increasing the percent attenuation observed when adding CO, by a factor called gain. The radiation is chopped by a filter wheel which contains narrow band filters at 4.0 and 4.65 microns. The resultant signal produced by the pyroelectric detector is demodulated by the electronics to product an automatic gain control signal, proportional to the total radiation, and a difference signal, proportional to the CO present. Tests of a breadboard model are described which show cavity gains of 10 with noise levels equivalent to 2 to 10 ppm CO.

New Zealand has been a significant producer of gold for over a century. Total recorded production is over 850 tonnes. There were three major periods of production: the first and biggest was between 1860 and 1880, the second was between 1895 and 1920 and the third was between 1930 and 1945. After 1945 gold production fell continually until 1980 when the major upward adjustment in gold price led to renewed interest. There have been important new developments in each of the known gold-rich areas: Westland, Otago and Coromandel and exploration for gold in these areas and in previously unprospected regions has reached unprecedented levels.

The comments contained in the discussion of the paper concerning the prediction of fracture gradients are of considerable interest, since the subject is of a very controversial and timely nature. It is regrettable and Fairhurst2 contradicts the author's statement in the third paragraph of Other Applications. These references create significant doubt that Eaton's Eq. 1 predicts fracture pressure during the injection of fluid into old wells. 3. No evidence is presented in this paper to support the author's Conclusions 2 and 3. While an empirical coefficient related to back-calculated field data is correlated with depth (Eaton's Fig. 4), there is no reason to suspect that this coefficient might be the Poisson's ratio of the various formations involved. 4. Until the field data supporting the empirical approach proposed by the author are presented and evaluated, the accuracy claimed in Conclusion 5 is without substantiation. References 1. The development of Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles started in the late 1940's when several projects were performed by Intrusion-Prepakt, Inc. utilizing various techniques to place the piling. On some projects, a grout pipe was placed down the augered hole after the auger was withdrawn, and structural grout was pumped into the hole until grout appeared at the surface, after which the grout pipe was withdrawn. In some instances coarse aggregate was placed after a grout pipe was in place, and then the grout was intruded into the coarse aggregate, making a pile using the preplaced concrete method. Another method of forming augered piles used a system of driving or drilling a grout pipe through soils adjacent to the auger once the auger was drilled to the bottom elevation. The tip of the grout pipe was placed in close proximity to the tip of the auger. As the auger was withdrawn, grout was pumped through the grout pipe filling the augered hole from the bottom. After grout was observed at the surface, the grout pipe was withdrawn. In 1951, a patent was applied for by Raymond Patterson describing the above techniques along with a technique for placement of grout using a hollow stem auger and a removable plug or lead bit at the tip of the auger. The expendable plug or lead bit was removed by using grout pressure. The patent was granted in 1956. Around this same time other augered piling con-tractors began operations under licensed arrangements.

The pollution of our water supply, Lake Michigan, is a continuing threat so long as our overflows from combined sewers exist. The problems have become even more acute during recent years, due to the increase of paved area- which accelerates and enlarges the flows of storm water. After each storm, mixtures of raw sewage and storm water spill into our waterways. If the storm is too large for the drainage systems, the mixture backs up into our streets and basements. Under severe conditions, it may even become necessary to open the locks, and discharge the polluted water into Lake Michigan. Consider the scope of the problem, as shown in Figure 1. The area in which combined sewers exist is 375 square miles, located in the central parts of Chicago and 49 suburbs. There are an estimated 640 overflow outlets to the waterways, each requiring attention. The capacity of outlets tributary to the waterways has increased dramatically over the years. Each time a pocket of upstream flooding is drained into the channels, the problem of its rapid disposition increases. Another difficulty is that the bottom of our waterways is covered with a blanket of accumulated sludge, ranging in depth up to 3-feet. There is currently limited knowledge concerning South African coal deposits as hosts for rare earth elements (REE). This project aims to determine the concentration of REE, including yttrium and scandium (REY+Sc) in various coal seams and adjacent sediments in borehole cores from the Ermelo, Witbank, and Waterberg coalfields in South Africa. Coal petrography (maceral count and vitrinite reflectance), XRD, XRF, sequential chemical extraction procedure (SCEP) before ICPMS, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) were conducted on the coal and associated sediment samples. The coals were inertinite-rich, medium-rank bituminous coal, with moderate to high ash content. The two dominant minerals in all the coalfields are kaolinite and quartz, except for sample ZBS2M, where dolomite was dominant. The dominant major oxides are Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, and CaO, which concur with the XRD results. The ICP-MS results following SCEP indicated that both coal and the associated sediments were light REY+Sc dominant. There was also an elevation of medium REY+Sc in the Witbank coal’s associated sediment samples. Notably, the samples with the highest REY+Sc results were the sediment samples. The Waterberg samples had the lowest REY+Sc from both the coal (less than 2 μg/g to 7 μg/g) and associated sediments (2 μg/g to 15 μg/g). While the highest REY+Sc was yielded from the Witbank-associated sediments (500 μg/g to 2,500 μg/g). The carbonate fraction step proved to be the most successful leaching step, as most REY+Sc was recovered in that step for all coalfields. In addition to the carbonate fraction, the silicates and sulfide fraction in the Witbank samples, and the ion-exchangeable fraction for the Waterbergassociated sediments samples proved successful in leaching out the REY+Sc. MLA determined that monazite and xenotime in all the coal samples were the REY+Sc-bearing minerals.

Over the past few years, there has been an emerging relationship between business and civil society, especially NGOs. This relationship has the potential to bring about significant change, identifying common ground between commercial and societal interests. The mining industry has been a leader in acknowledging the need for community consultation and engagement. This paper argues that partnerships can make a very significant contribution to the industry as it comes to terms with the dilemma of an open economic system pushing against a closed ecological system.The paper will pose a number of questions: where is the locus for debate about sustainability in the mining sector?; how well embedded within companies are the new competencies that Leon Davis first identified in 1995 for the mining sector?; how has education for mining engineers or exploration geologists changed to prepare people for what are very different expectations within the working environment?; how well is the industry doing in managing its own environmental impact and what is its responsibility to an agenda for sustainability which extends beyond its own operations?;and how can NGO partnerships contribute to more sustainable outcomes? The paper does not aim to answer these questions, but to explore them in the hope that the issues and possibilities raised will contribute to advancing progress towards sustainability within the industry.

THE oxidized ores of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co., in the Tintic mining district, have never yielded to metallurgical treatment by any standard method except smelting. These ores occur in comparatively small, irregular, siliceous replacements in limestone, and carry silver, lead, and gold as the principal valuable metals. But smelting methods. are unsatisfactory, as the lead smelters heavily penalize the large amount of silica in the ore, and the copper smelters do not pay for the lead in the ore; therefore, an alternative treatment method was sought. In 1916, a metallurgical research department was organized under; the direction of the writer. Many standard metallurgical methods were investigated but, on oxidized ore, none yielded extraction great enough to make its use feasible. During some chloridizing-roasting experiments in 1916, made in an assay muffle, the writer noted that large proportions of the silver, lead, and gold were volatilized from certain oxidized ores. The possibility of volatilizing the metals and collecting them in the form of a concentrated fume was then studied. But, as it was shown that satisfactory chloride-volatilization would be limited to a furnace feed with a high fusing temperature of the non-volatilizable constituents, and as the results obtained in a rotary kiln with the admixture of common salt with the ground ore were inferior to muffle tests, further volatilization experiments were discontinued until 1920. During this interval, an experimental sulfidizing and flotation plant was operated. After the cessation of attempts to float the oxidized minerals, chloride-volatilization experiments were resumed. The highly infusible flotation. tailing from the operation of the flotation mill was used for furnace feed. The first tests made on flotation tailing mixed with 10 per cent. common salt showed -nearly complete lead and gold volatilization but considerably less volatilization of silver than in muffle tests. In attempts to increase the silver extraction, the percentage salt in the furnace feed was varied, and it soon became apparent that the use of smaller percentages of salt raised the fusion temperature of the furnace charge and thus,

"A cornerstone of any successful mining project is an understanding of the mineral assemblage and metal distribution comprising the deposit. Knowledge of the precise mineral/ metal zoning enables an operation to utilize different mining and processing methods optimized for different parts of the deposit. The Lac des Iles mine, located in northwestern Ontario, is one operation that depends on a good understanding of these issues. Current resources for the Roby Zone total 94.1 Mt grading 1.66 g/t Pd, 0.18 g/t Pt, 0.14 g/t Au, 0.062% Cu, and 0.053% Ni.The Roby Zone occurs within the gabbroic portion of the Lac des Iles intrusive complex and consists of three compositionally and texturally different ore types with variable PGE, base and precious metal contents. PGE occur as sulphides and bismuthotellurides in net-textured sulphides, coarse sulphide blebs and as finegrained inclusions within secondary silicates.Knowledge of the precise mineral/metal zoning has directly and indirectly improved several operational aspects, including resource modelling, mining, and processing. For example, metallurgical recoveries have been increased by up to 3% to 5% and concentrate grades have increased by up to 100%. IntroductionLac des Iles Mines Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of North American Palladium Ltd., owns and operates a 3000 t/d open pit mine and concentrate facility, located 100 km north of Thunder Bay in northwestern Ontario. The Lac des Iles PGE-gold-copper-nickel mine has been in commercial production since 1993 and in 1997, produced 1.8 million grams of palladium, 127 000 g of platinum, 114 000 g of gold, 438 000 kg of copper and 354 000 kg of nickel (North American Palladium Ltd., 1998).Under the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP), a two-year study of the mineralogy of the Roby Zone was undertaken with a goal of improving the profitability of the mine. Geological mapping, petrography and geochemistry of the Roby Zone were completed during this study. Utilization of the detailed mineral/metal zoning identified as part of this study was implemented at the mine and shown to positively impact many operational aspects including mining and processing."

Oxides of sulphur are corrosive and are produced when sulphur-containing fuels are burned. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a colourless gas with a characteristic, irritating, pungent odour. Exposure routes to the human body are mainly through inhalation and skin and/or eye contact. Symptoms of exposure to SO2 may include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; rhinorrhea (discharge of thin nasal mucous); choking; cough; and reflex bronchoconstriction. To protect employees against the ill health effects of SO2 exposure, they are often required to make use of respiratory protection whenever entering areas were the SO2 levels exceed the statutory limits. The use of respiratory protective equipment should always be a last resort and should be considered only after other control measures have failed to reduce occupational exposure levels to below the occupational exposure limit or whilst other control measures are being investigated or implemented. Whenever the use of respiratory protection equipment is considered, it should always be used as part of a comprehensive respiratory protection plan. It is also extremely important that all potentially exposed persons are adequately and comprehensively informed and trained.

"INTRODUCTION During the 6-year period, 1940-45, 481,485,000 gross tons of iron ore was shipped from the Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin mines of the Lake Superior district. Approximately 367,000,000 tons, or 76 percent, of this ore was shipped from open-cut mines. The production of this large tonnage of iron ore from the open-cut mines of the Lake Superior district during the recent war was an outstanding achievement. It is questionable whether this record-breaking tonnage of iron ore, vitally needed for the successful prosecution of the war, could have been produced without the modern equipment and mining methods used in the district, The transportation of iron ore from the open-cut mines of the district is the most important phase of the mining cycle. Although some of the mines still use rail haulage advantageously, this method of haulage has been replaced at most nines with motor-truck haulage or a combination of motor-truck and belt-conveyor haulage.SCOPEThe transportation of iron ore in this report covers (1) power shovels, (2) rail haulage, (3) trucks, (4) belt conveyors, (5) shipping pockets, (6) accident statistics, and (7) safety rules pertaining to open-cut transporta¬tion. The purpose of the report is to discuss briefly and disseminate to the mining industry the modern methods, equipment, and safety practices used in transporting iron ore at the open-cut mines of the district.The 25 open-cut mines covered herein, located in the Marquette, Cuyuna, and Mesabi iron ranges of Michigan and Minnesota, shipped approximately 44,000,000 tons of iron in 1945, which amounted to 72 percent of the open-cut iron ore shipped from the Lake Superior district."

This study focused on the chemical reactions between uranium tailings fluids and cores of subjacent bedrock from the site of the Cotter Corporation uranium mill at Canon City, Colorado. Actual and synthetic tailings fluids were forced through cores of bedrock. The pH of the effluent solutions was the dominant control on the behavior of dissolved species in solution. The pH depended on the presence or absence of calcite cement in the rocks. Calcite neutralized acidic raffinates and caused the precipitation of iron, manganese, aluminum, and possibly uranium. Chloride, sulfate, and sodium were not retarded upon passage through the cores, and sulfate and chloride should be useful as tracers of escaping tailings fluids. Zinc, copper, cobalt, nickel, uranium, and vanadium exhibited high mobility under acidic conditions and were strongly retarded at elevated pH. Calcium was released due to dissolution of calcite and ion-exchange. Magnesium was not retarded in concentrated solutions, but showed moderate retardation in dilute fluids. Potassium and ammonium both showed early retardation followed by breakthrough and mobility. The behavior of molybdenum was strongly dependent on pH, with retardation at low pH and mobility at elevated pH. Selenium was highly mobile under all conditions. Selenium should be a better tracer than molybdenum for many situations. Precipitation of carnotite appears to control the solubility of uranium and, possibly, vanadium. With the exception of the precipitation of aluminum and silica, all reactions were rapid.

Synthetic rock with predictable porosity and permeability has been Prepared from mixtures of sand, cement and water. Three series of mixes were investigated primarily for the relation between porosity and permeability for certain grain sizes and proportions. Synthetic rock prepared of 65 per cent large grains, 27 per cent small grains and 8 per cent Portland cement, gave measurable results ranging in porosity from 22.5 to 40 per cent and in permeability from 0.1 darcies to 6 darcies. This variation in porosity and permeability was caused by varying the amount of blending water. Drainage-cycle relative permeability characteristics of the synthetic rock were similar to those of natural reservoir rock. INTRODUCTION The fundamental behavior characteristics of fluids flowing through porous media have been described in the literature. Practical application of these flow characteristics to field conditions is too complicated except where assumptions are overly simplified. The use of dimensionally scaled models to simulate oil reservoirs has been described in the literature. 1-3 These and other papers have presented the theoretical and experimental justification for model design. Others have presented elements of model construction and their operation. In most investigations the porous media have consisted of either u ncon soli da ted sand, glass beads, broken glass or plastic-impregnated granular substances—materials in which the flow behavior is not identical to that in natural reservoir rock. The relative permeability curves for unconsoli-dated sands differ from those for consolidated sandstone. The effect of saturation history on relative permeability measurements is discussed by Geffen, et a1.4 Wyga15 has shown quite conclusively that a process of artificial cementation can be used to render un consolidated packs into synthetic sandstones having properties similar to those of natural rock. Many theoretical and experimental studies have been made in attempts to determine the structure and properties of unconsolidated sand, the most notable being by Naar and Wygal.6 Others have theorized and experimented with the fundamental characteristics of reservoir rocks. This study was conducted to determine if some general relationship could be established between the size of sand grains and the porosity and permeability in consolidated binary packs. This paper presents the results obtained by changing some of the factors which affect the porosity and permeability of synthetically prepared sandstone. In addition, drainage relative permeability curves are presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Mixtures of Portland cement with water and aggregate generally are designed to have certain characteristics, but essentially all are planned to be impervious to water or other liquids. Synthetic sandstone simulating oil reservoir rock, however, must be designed to have a given permeability (sometimes several darcies), a porosity which is primarily the effective porosity but quantitatively similar to natural rock, and other characteristics comparable to reservoir rock, such as wettability, pore geometry, tortuosity, etc. Unconsolidated ternary mixtures of spheres gave both a theoretically computed and an experimentally observed minimum porosity of about 25 per cent.7 By using a particle-distribution system, one-size particle packs had reproducible porosities in the reproducible range of 35 to 37 per cent.6 For model reservoir studies of the prototype system, a synthetic rock having a porosity of 25 per cent or less and a permeability of 2 darcies was required. The rock had to be uniform and competent enough to handle. Synthetic sandstone cores were prepared utilizing the technique developed by Wygal.5 Some slight variations in the procedure were incorporated. The sand was sieved through U. S. Standard sieves. The final arsenic bearing waste products at the majority of metallurgical and chemical enterprises are cakes in which arsenic is present in the form of calcium arsenate. Burial of cakes demands construction of special burial sites and does not guarantee reliable protection from arsenic penetration into the ground and surface waters. Under laboratory conditions we developed technology for processing calcium arsenate cakes with obtaining low toxic products suitable for long-term storage, meeting environmental requirements. The investigations have shown that thermal processing of briquetted mixtures of cakes containing 15 - 20 per cent weight of pyrite under the temperature of 873 - 923¦K during 45 - 60 minutes gives briquettes sufficiently hard for transportation and long-term storage. Arsenic, under high sulphidisation temperature is bonded into low solubility non-volatile iron sulphide bearing compounds having chemical properties similar to the natural arsenic compounds. Solubility of the obtained products in neutral, acid and alkaline media was investigated during long period of time (three to 12 months). It was determined that arsenic content in the solutions did not exceed the norms for cultural and welfare basins and fish-ponds.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating vanadium recovery from various domestic resources. A low-grade carnotite ore sample containing 0.34 pct V20S and 0.04 pct U30S was leached, and the results were compared with those of similar leach tests using a mill-grade sample containing 1.26 pct V205 and 0.19 pct U308. Experiments on the two ore samples included agitation leaching, pugging, salt-roast leaching, and autoclave leaching. None of the leaching methods investigated showed any significant advantage over another except autoclaving, which reduced the leach time but at the expense of greater acid consumption. Typical of the experimental results attained are the data gathered from the agitation leaching tests. Agitation leaching of the mill-grade ore with 100 lb/ton H2S04 resulted in extractions of 94 pct U308 and 33 pct V205. To increase the vanadium extraction from 33 to 91 pct required concentrations of 300 lb/ton H2S04 and 10 lb/ton NaC103. Complementary agitation leach tests on the low-grade ore required 200 lb/ton H2S04 to extract 94 pct U308, and 300 lb/ton H2S04 and 10 lb/ton NaC103 to extract 90 pct V205.

Para determinar los defectos, causas y consecuencias, es necesario conocer el procedimiento de control de los mismos a través del diagrama de Ishikawa o el ciclo de PHVA. Esta metodología permite encontrar la solución a los problemas dentro del aseguramiento de la calidad, seguridad y productividad de una empresa, así como establece la fuente de la causa de los accidentes por lesiones, como de los daños a la propiedad privada. En consecuencia, su aplicación se ha estandarizado en las áreas de seguridad y medio ambiente de dicha minera desde hace dos años, obteniendo resultados muy satisfactorios como el Premio Nacional de Seguridad en minería subterránea otorgado por el ISEM.
