A survey was conducted relating to the current practices for the classification of hazardous locations in coal preparation plants. Several plants processing bituminous, anthracite and lignite coal in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, North Dakota, Colorado, Montana and Wyoming were visited. Coal preparation plant operations and designers as well as MESA inspectors were interviewed. The National Electrical Code was discussed with selected members of the NFPA committee and electrical equipment manufacturers. Data provided by MESA on fire and explosion accidents in coal preparation plants were examined. The requirements of the pertinent Federal Regulations, National Electrical Code, National Electrical Manufacturers Association and Underwriters' Laboratories were compared and evaluated. This report consists of two parts. Part I: "Analysis and Review" provides a summary of the findings. Part II: "Recommended Guidelines" consists of recommended uniform guidelines that may be used for interpreting the National Electrical Code as it applies to the classification of hazardous areas in coal preparation plants.

Development of Grindability Tests Based on Direct Measurement of Energy Nowadays, for the characterisation of the grindability different grindability indices - Bond-work index (Wi), Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) or Zeisel specific grindability (Wt) - are used. Generally, the grindability tests are carried out under relatively simplified circumstances, in a special dry batch mill with defined feed size material until prescribed conditions are reached at room temperature. However, in the fine- and ultra fine grinding, which is a frequent task (fly ash, tailings, alumina, etc), a fine material (<50 - 200 ¦m) is usually ground down to the few micrometers. The conventional grindability testing methods and apparatuses (Bond-, Hardgrove-, Zeisel-processes) for their determination, although, are not suitable directly to measure the grindability of such fine materials, since the maximal particle size of the feed material (0.5 - 3 mm) to be tested is much higher. One of the important goals of the research carried out in our Institute was to develop the novel grindability testing methods, which are suitable for the fine and ultra fine grinding, and additionally provide the possibility for the fast determination of the grindability. In order to realise the above aim the conventional Bond- and Hardgrove- mills were modified in order to directly measure the grinding work. In particular, the Hardgrove-mill was equipped with a simple torque-meter (load cell). The Bond-mill was rigged with a digital electric power measurer. The systematic experiments were carried out parallel in both mills using the conventional and the developed methods. Finally the results of both were compared. The measuring results have proved that the Bond-work index can be determined based on the developed methods. The new grindability testing methods were applied successfully in several industrial research tasks for the determination of the specific grinding energy and the Bond-work index. These methods can be also used in the industrial practice for the control of the grinding process.

"In the course of its investigations pertaining to the promotion of safety the Bureau of Mines is actively engaged in investigating all promising materials that may be of value in rendering methane or other combustible gases, vapors, or solids less inflammable.Added substances are of value if such additions narrow the limits of inflammability, raise the ignition temperature, lower the speed of propagation of flame, or reduce the maximum pressure developed. Of major importance is the effect of added materials on the limits of inflammability, because methane is the chief combustible s liberated in mines, considerable work has been done with extinguishing agents on methane flames. For obvious reasons, a substance to be of value for the extinction flames should be a gas, or a liquid having a sufficient vapor pressure to give concentrations of the vapor in sufficient amounts to extinguish the flames or markedly narrow the limits of inflammability. The substance should be nontoxic, cheap, and noncorrosive and must be incombustible. Solids, such as rock dust, are undesirable and of little value for combustible gases because they soon settle out of the atmosphere, and their flame- extinguishing value is thereby lost. There are at present only a few gases and vapors-for example, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and carbon tetrachloride-which meet these requirements.The extinction of methane flames by nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and argon has been reported by Coward and Hartwell 4; the extinction by water vapor by Coward and Gleadell 5, and the extinction by helium and carbon tetrachloride by Coward and Jones 6."

"This repot continues the series of papers being prepared at the Southwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the department of mining and metallurgy, University of Arizona, on factors involved in the leaching of ores. A list of previous publications is given in the bibliography at the end of this paper.Four factors are essential to the leaching of any copper-bearing ore: (1) A solution that will attack the copper minerals must get into the body of the ore particles; (2) the copper minerals must be dissolved by the solution; (3) the solution containing the dissolved copper must find its way out of the voids of the rocks into the main solution; and (4) the copper in solution must be recovered by some means of precipitation.This paper considers the third step -- the extraction of the water-soluble copper. From leached ores. The usual commercial practice in leaching copper ores consists of: (1) Crushing the ore to pass through a screen with approximately one-quarter or one-third inch openings; (2) charging the crushed ore into a fat; (3) adding, usually by upward percolation, a solution that will attack the copper minerals; and (4) washing the copper-laden solutions out of the ore with solutions weaker in copper than the pregnant solution, and finally with water. A countercurrent system of leaching and washing is usually employed. In some plants the solutions are circulated during leaching and washing, and in others they are not. In some plants the wash solutions are added by upward percolation, while at Chuquicamata the so-called ""piston-displacement"" method of washing is employed.The following condensed resume of the leaching cycle of the plant of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is given to present to the reader a picture of the steps involved in a typical leaching cycle. This plant was recently described in detail.4 The ore, crushed to pass openings 11/2 inches in diameter, passes over a screen with ¼-inch openings. The undersize from the screen goes to a Dorr howl classifier that removes the primary slime from the circuit. The overflow from the classifier is treated in a slime-leaching plant. The oversize of the ¼-inch screen passes through rolls, where it is crushed to pass a 3/8-inchscreen. The undersize from the 3/8-inch screen join with the coarse material from the classifier, and the combined products become the feed to the leaching vats. There are 13 concrete lead-lined leaching vats. The complete leaching cycle is 13 days. Eight tanks are under acid-iron content at all times; three are being washed, one tank is being filled, and the one is being excavated. The electrolyzed solution from the tank house, to which amount of new acid has been added, is put on the oldest tank of ore under need This solution travels from tank to tank and finally emerges from the newest ore"

As a minerals company, obtaining the appropriate consents under the Resource Management Act 1991 and getting permits granted for exploring, prospecting and mining under the Crown Minerals Act 1991, is necessary for actively exploring and mining in New Zealand. But the essential mix of ingredients for a viable and healthy Industry go way beyond this.   In the short term, an individual company seeking to operate on or within the Crown minerals estate of New Zealand must chart a course through the requirements raised by new cornerstone legislation, the Resource Management Act, the Crown Minerals Act and, the Conservation Act 1978 (where the minerals sought coincide with this estate).   However, this paper suggests that in the longer term for individual operators within the Industry and for the Industry at large to remain viable and sustainable and for New Zealanders to continue to enjoy its benefits, much more is required. Not least of which is a better balancing of competing uses and attitudes, which will require an opening of minds, a change in mindset, topped off with those two most essential of ingredients advocacy and leadership.   New Zealand has undergone massive restructuring in the last 15 years. Is it complete? Have each of its fronts evolved to the end point which was envisaged by the designers of the regime? What are the advantages? What is left to be done? What are the impediments from an incomplete transition which are left to either dog the Industry or remain as a challenge to be removed to ensure the Industry's smooth sailing into a prosperous and environmentally clean and friendly future? A future wherein an educated and understanding public welcome and are proud of the Minerals Industry to whom they owe the standard of living which they enjoy.   This presentation will examine the role of the New Zealand Minerals Industry Association (NZMIA) in paving the way for an optimum operating environment in which to couch a healthy industry into the future.

In this paper results from industrial trials of CaC2 injection during stainless steel production in an electric arc furnace at Sandvik Steel is presented. The main purpose of the investigation was to analyse the effect of the injection on slag foaming and final chromium oxide concentration in slag. The results show that both an increase in slag foaming and a decrease of the final chromium oxide could be obtained during the charges with CaC2injection. On the basis of the results, the economical requirements are also discussed. Both the technical and economical requirements could be achieved for steels alloyed with Mo. In order to secure the economical requirements for all steel grades of interest, the injection technology must be further developed. It would also be important to utilize the positive effect of the slag foaming on the electric energy consumption. The work has been performed as a part of MEFOS frame research programme with participants from Sandvik Steel, AKZO Nobel and Avesta Polarit. Due to population growth and rapid urbanization in Turkey, the need for the construction of residential units, transportation and infrastructure facilities has become increasingly more pressing. Since rock units encountered in the surface and underground in the construction of the subway, infrastructure and housing facilities, it is a necessity to use blast excavation methods. In recent years, large housing construction projects have been carried out especially in Turkish metropolitan areas, involving foundation excavations giving rise to great amounts of earthmoving. Since rock units encountered during foundation excavations are usually hard and solid, excavation with conventional machinery proves to be inadequate and unproductive, hence the necessity for the application of blasting technology.

The Velvet gold orebody (153 Koz Au) is located near the Kanowna Belle gold deposit in the Boorara Domain of the Kalgoorlie Terrane, a subdivision of the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Superterrane (Swager et al, 1990). Gold mineralisation at Velvet is hosted within an intrusion of intermediate composition that broadly follows a sub vertical hanging wall splay of the Fitzroy Shear Zone.Velvet was discovered in 2003 during an underground exploration drilling program targeting potential strike extensions to the Kanowna Belle deposit. Diamond drill hole KDU1595 returned a downhole intercept of 36 m grading 4.6 ppm Au approximately 500 m west of the deposit and at a vertical depth of 700 m below surface in the immediate hanging wall of the primary Kanowna Belle host structure, the Fitzroy Shear Zone. Subsequent drilling completed following the initial discovery, from both surface and underground collar positions, failed to replicate this result.In 2014, KDU1595 was resurveyed gyroscopically and the mineralised intercept correctly located. Additional drilling was undertaken to follow-up the repositioned discovery hole. Challenges included poor drilling angles through the Fitzroy Shear Zone, excessive deviation during drilling and the unknown geometry of the target. Navigational drilling helped to successfully penetrate the Fitzroy Shear Zone and in April 2015, drill hole KDU3234 returned a significant downhole intercept of 45 m grading 5.6 ppm Au.Additional drilling success resulted in a decision to develop a 600 m drive to serve as a dual-purpose access for further exploration and mining. This was a potential risk considering that the orebody geometry was unknown and all significant drilling results were clustered within a 50 m × 50 m panel. Development commenced in June 2015 and the first ore cut taken in April 2016. Geological mapping and structural interpretation, together with multi-element and spectral analysis of drill samples has enabled several other target areas to be identified for exploration. The Velvet mining area is critical to continued production at Kanowna Belle. Geological understanding must advance as mining progresses to ensure continued resource growth and optimal extraction of reserves.CITATION:Lorusso, G, Rogers, J and Tripp, G, 2017. The theory of probability with respect to the failure of structures is discussed. It is shown that the probability of safety, probability of failure, and factor of safety are directly related to each other and that as standard deviation approaches zero, the probability curves approach a unit step function which can be interpreted as the conventional factor of safety. The factor of safety is numerically the ratio of the load to the strength of the material at a particular point or plane in an engineering structure. Mathematically, it can be illustrated as a unit step function undefined at the point where the factor of safety is one (Fig. 1). The uncertainty of variation of soil and rock strengths require factors of safety much higher than those used in other engineering structures. The factors of safety used are generally determined from past experiences with similar structures. However, the factors thus determined do not have any theoretical meaning or do not indicate any relationship to actual safety.' It seems, therefore, logical to develop a system with a sound theoretical basis to obtain a more suitable factor of safety for structures. An application of elementary theory of probability indicates that it is possible to relate this number to theoretical and practical engineering facts.

Six companies mined fire clay in Missouri and Ohio during 2004. Production, based on a preliminary survey of the fire clay industry, was estimated to be 398 kt(438,700 st), valued at $9.81 million. This was slightly less than the production and value figures from 2003. Missouri was the leading producer state. It accounted for more than 70 percent of the U.S. production. Consumption Domestic producers sold or used fire clay primarily for refractory applications. This application accounted for 79 percent of the market. Refractory products made using fire clay include firebrick and block, grogs, high-alumina brick and specialties, refractory mortars and mixes, and saggers.

The U.S. Geological Survey recently completed a digital coal resource assessment model of the Upper Pennsylvanian Pittsburgh coal bed which indicates that of the original 34 billion short tons [31 billion tonnes] of coal, 16 billion short tons [14 billion tonnes] remain after subtracting mined-out coal. When technical, environmental, and social restrictions are applied to the remaining Pittsburgh coal model, only12 billion short tons [11 billion tonnes] are available for mining. Our assessment models estimate that up to 0.61 billion short tons [0.55 billion tonnes], 2.7billion short tons [2.4 billion tonnes], and 8.5 billion short tons [7.7 billion tonnes] could be available for surface mining, continuous mining, and longwall mining, respectively. This analysis is an example of a second-generation regional coal availability study designed to model recoverability characteristics for all the major coal beds in the U.S.

The collection efficiency of dust particles was determined in a laboratory dust chamber equipped with a water spray. Measurements were made in the presence of selected nonionic, cationic and anionic surfactants. For the nonionic and the anionic reagents, efficiency was maximum in a narrow range of concentration. The surfactant concentration corresponding to high collection efficiency was usually much below the commonly used concentration of l%, however. In comparison, much higher collection efficiency was observed for a cationic surfactant at extremely low concentrations. For delineating the mechanism of capture of dust particles, surface tension and contact angle results were used to obtain a correlation between the work of adhesion and the efficiency of collection. Such a correlation was reasonable for the nonionic surfactants but not for charged surfactants. In the latter case, electrostatic interactions between charged droplets and particles were more important, especially for the cationic reagent.

This report is the 26th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations and the 8th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.1 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1961, and it provides references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1961 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. Details about some of the researches mentioned may be obtained by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Bibliography; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications. The coal program of the Bureau of Mines extends over the wide range of applied and theoretical studies indicated by the table of contents of this report. Applied studies are conducted in connection with the development and evaluation of new mining techniques, and the effective processing and utilization of coal and coal products. Analyses of coal, technical advice, and other assistance to Federal agencies in connection with fuel and boiler-water problems, and health and safety activities are among the practical services handled by the Bureau, Fundamental research such as that on coal structure and on the properties of coal is conducted because it will, over a period of the, furnish an increasing general knowledge about coal; scientists and engineers may use this knowledge in solving problems in mining and utilization of

Michigan is becoming one of the important oil-producing States of the country. The amount of crude oil produced within its boundaries has increased from only 4,000 barrels in 19253/ to nearly 16 million barrels in 19935.4/ The Bureau of Mines method of crude-oil analysis and classification-indicates that the oils from the several producing fields are predominantly paraffin-intermediate-base, wax-bearing crudes. In general, they will yield 25 to 35 percent of highly paraffinic gasoline and about the t- me amount of kerosene and gas-oil combined, 7.2 to 15 percent of lubricating oil stock, and 20 percent of residuum with a carbon residue or about 6 to 7 percent. In addition, there appears to be some correlation between certain properties of the crude oils and both the geographical location and geological structure of the oil-producing areas within the State. These general conclusions are based on the analytical data presented in this report, which is one of a series of papers that record the general characteristics of crude oil from the many producing fields of the United States. This report discusses briefly the oil fields of Michigan and the characteristics of the crude oils produced from them. The analyses of 15 samples are given. Conventional augered, cast-in-place (ACIP) piles were introduced into the New York City area as a result of the damage to existing structures caused by pile driving operations. ACIP piles are often specified where deep foundations are to be installed adjacent to transit facilities, sensitive underground utilities or in close proximity to existing structures. However, loss-of-ground issues associated with the installation of ACIP piles have prevented the wide-scale use of these systems. Beginning in 2002, Berkel & Company Contractors, Inc. began using its augered, cast-in-place displacement (ACIPD) system in the New York City area. Like conventional ACIP piles, this system produces almost no vibration. Also, as almost no material is brought to the surface, there is no opportunity for loss of ground. This paper presents a description of Berkel's displacement pile system and a brief discussion of six projects in the New York City area that have been executed with this system over the past two years.

This study analyses the results of a pilot trial of a newly developed armed-chained stone-cutting machine. The machine was developed in Turkey and trialed at the Kaklik/Kocaba travertine quarries in the Denizli District. An armed-chained cutting machine is an alternative to the diamond wire cutting method more frequently used in the production of natural stone quarry blocks, and increases production efficiency and quality. Since there is no need to collapse the blocks using the armed-chained cutting production process, there is no risk of the block developing cracks. This results in a considerable increase in the efficiency of natural stone block production. The armed-chained cutting machine is easier both to assemble and run when compared to other block cutting methods. This process resulted in the production of a larger number of blocks at a lower cost within the same time frame, particularly in travertine quarries and in all other natural stone quarries. The block efficiency in travertine quarries was calculated as 65?80%using the armed-chained cutting machine, compared with 7?14% using the normal diamond wire cutting method.

In central Washington, six miles south of the small town of Vantage, the flow of the Columbia River is harnessed by the Wanapum Dam which is part of the Priest Rapids Hydroelectric Project owned and operated by Grant County Public Utility District (GCPUD). Extending more than 8,300-feet from bank to bank, the dam includes left and right earth embankments, left and right concrete gravity sections and a 10-unit powerhouse. Adjacent to the right embankment is a concrete gravity spillway featuring radial gates measuring 50-feet-wide and nearly 70-feet-high. In the early 1960’s when Wanapum Dam was built, these seven-story spillway gates were the highest in the world. In late February 2014, 50-years into its service life, during a routine maintenance inspection, observant workers noticed a slight misalignment in the roadway deck curbs and handrails located on top of the spillway. Further survey and inspection efforts uncovered a 65-foot-long by two- inch-wide crack that spanned the full length of Monolith 4. On discovering the extent of the damage, GCPUD initiated immediate drawdown of the reservoir to relieve pressure on the spillway monoliths. Wanapum Reservoir and the areas directly downstream of the dam were immediately closed, boat ramps and inlets were left completely dry, campsites were closed and boating activity was banned on the lake until further investigations and remedial procedures were in place and completed. An extensive root cause analysis ultimately led to the conclusion that errors in the initial design calculations and late changes to the final spillway design led to a condition that generated tensile stresses in the concrete at the upstream face, which over a period of 50-years resulted in the formation of a crack along a horizontal lift joint located about 85-feet below normal pool elevation. Further analysis showed that, although visible distress was found at Monolith 4, there was nothing preventing this issue from happening at other locations along the dam spillway. Although no visible cracking was found in the other monoliths, repair procedures for Monolith 4 would have to be replicated at the remaining monoliths.
