[A system of analysis for sulfur groups in petroleum distillates has been developed as one phase of the Bureau-of Nines investigation of the more economic utilization of the so-called "black oils" of Wyoming,. This problem is being studied by the Bureau of Nines under a cooperative agreement with the University of Wyoming at the Bureau's Petroleum Experiment Station, Laramie, Wyo. Wyoming black oils have high sulfur and asphalt content and usually yield only small percentages of straight-run gasoline. A more detailed description of the properties of black oilshas been given in a previous publication (3)3/. The preparation and properties of asphalts from those oils have been described (1, 2), end the effect of thermal cracking and the use of ordinary methods of treating wore discussed in one Bureau publication (4), Although these studies gave considerable insight into the properties and characteristics of black oil, it was thought t that a more fundamental attack would assist materially in the problem of sulfur removal.]

The only economically significant deposit of dolomite in New Zealand is at Mount Burnett, in north-west Nelson. The dolomite, associated with marbles and schists, is complexly deformed, and is of Paleozoic age.A very large quantity is present, although the recoverable amount is to some extent limited by the difficult terrain.Physically the quality of the dolomite is excellent. It is a tough, durable, fine grained rock. Chemically it is a little more variable. The range and frequency o~ the more important impurities are illustrated by hlstograms, as is the "dolomite factor"-a measure of the amount of the mineral dolomite in the rock. lbe dolomite factor averages 84 per cent, the remainder of the rock consisting largely of calcite. Quarrying, milling, production, and uses are described. In 1966 production reached 13,250 tons.

"The use of soil improvement to utilize areas, which are not suitable for foundation purpose, has a long tradition. Due to the increasing demand of foundation works in areas of unsuitable soils, the improvement of the existing soils becomes even more important in the future.Various applications and systems for various demands exist around the world. Either it is a “simple” improvement for settlement reduction or a more important aim as liquefaction mitigation. However, each system has its advantages, limits and needs.Furthermore to the soil improvement, using various tools, soil mixing can also be used for applications like cut off and/or retaining wall.The paper will describe some basics of various techniques and different applications of the systems all over the world where the systems provided solutions for different purposes, e.g. simple foundation or liquefaction mitigation.It will describe also the main equipment which will be needed to execute these works under the various conditionsINTRODUCTIONSoil mixing is a methodology where the soil is improved by mixing it with cement, lime or other binders in situ by using a mixing tool. This methodology can be used either as wet mixing or as dry mixing. In the more frequently used wet mixing process, usually a mixture of binder and water, maybe with additives, is injected and mixed with the soil. Depending on the type of soil and binder, by the end of the mixing process, a mortar like mixture is created which hardens during the hydration process. In the dry mixing process, the binder is directly mixed with the soil and reacts directly with the existing soil and water.Mixing tools show several versions, so that they are mixing around either a vertical or horizontal axis, mixing in a trench and maybe are jet assisted. Figure 1 shows a classification done by Bruce 2010. Depending on the technique, improvement depth of up to 80 m can be achieved."

The removal of rock blockages in mining operations has long been a risky undertaking, especially in high overhead conditions. Moreover, the assessment of where to put charges and the placement of them has been difficult due to the lack of visibility and safe access to the area. Traditionally, wedging long poles with explosives on them to keep the operator at a relatively safe distance has been the tried and true method of attempting to remove the blockages. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect system as it usually takes several attempts to remove the blockage. Each successive attempt results in even more dangerous conditions for workers and/or damage to the mine due to the successively larger amounts of explosives used until the hang-up finally comes down.Over the years, different ideas have been proposed to improve this process and reduce the inherent safety risks. Some of the technologies that have been trialled include projectiles fired at the hang-up; large, cumbersome arms; and massive amounts of explosives, each of which come with their own inherent safety risks that result in dangerous situations for miners and the mine.After gaining a thorough understanding of the process, Penguin Automated Systems Inc has developed a robotic system that is capable of working in a rock blockage safely. The idea combines the latest in telerobotics technology with 3D scanning and underground geospatial positioning. The hang-up removal is performed by scanning the inside of the hang-up to rapidly develop a geospatially placed 3D model for the operator to use. The 3D model is detailed enough that the operator can attempt to pick the ‘keystone’. A blasting engineer or the operator can then determine the exact position where the explosive charge should be placed in the 3D model and thus at the actual hang-up. The operator, controlling the robotic arm, uses the 3D virtual reality model of the robot system and the actual drawpoint information model to display the location information, the arm can then reach into the hang-up to position the charge using the kinematic model of the robot system. The 3D model is used to provide views inside the hang-up so that the operator can move the arm safely and precisely. This process allows the operator to place the charge (using the 3D representation of the drawpoint) from a long distance away. As the process continues, the end of the arm drills the rock and precisely loads the explosives. The robot then returns the blasting cable to the command station, which is located in a truck at a safe distance from the blockage.This paper will review the development of the system and present the results to date.CITATION:Baiden, G, 2016. "The mill at Denison Mines' Elliot Lake Operations started up in 1957, with a capacity of 6,000 tons per day. Over the years various plant modifications expanded th.is to 7 500 tons per day. In 1976, management decided to carry out a major expansion of the milling capacity, and during 1980 the grinding capacity was increased to 15,000 tons per day.The original comminution system consisted of a conventional crushing plant feeding minus S/s-inch material to rod and pebble mills, in closed circuit with mechanical classifiers. The key decision that had to be made was whether the expansion should include conventional or autogenous grinding flow sheets.During 1977, extensive pilot plant studies at Lakefield Research showed that two-stage semi-autogenous grinding, with some steel media in the primary mill and with pebble media in the second stage, produced stable grinding conditions. This type of circuit was selected by Denison for the expansion, and went into production in 1980. Primary millThe flow sheet of the semi-autogenous grinding circuit is shown in Figure 1. The primary grinding mill is a Koppers 28 foot by 10 foot mill, driven by a 4,000 h.p. synchronous motor. It is fed with a minus 8-inch run-of-mine ore, and 4-inch grinding balls are added as supplementary grinding media. There are two Koppers 15.5 foot by 22 foot secondary pebble mills, driven with 1500 h.p. synchronous motors. Each grinding stage operates in closed circuit with cyclones, and the primary cyclone overflow is the feed to the secondary mills. The circulating load in the primary stage can be controlled by adjusting the cyclone apexes."

This paper follows that of the Milos Conf, 2002 and examines the collection and reporting of SDIs in the industrial minerals industry in Europe. It compares the characteristics of the GRI Reporting Guidelines, with its Metals and Mining Sector Supplement with those of the EU DG Enterprise Scheme, launched in 2001. The particular issue of SME's and companies which are not publicly traded is examined. The pros and cons of participating in such schemes is a central theme of the paper. The paper concludes that there and many business benefits for these companies in participating and submitting their data. The European Commission Scheme is strongly recommended for companies in the sector which are SME's and not-publicly traded as well as large firms who are listed on European Stock Exchanges.

To develop more accurate means of measuring low ventilating air velocities in underground mines to facilitate compliance with ventilation standards. The Approach: A commercially available vane anemometer which produces an electrical, rather than a mechanical, output was coupled to electronic circuitry to produce the Bureau's Digital Low Velocity Anemometer (see photo). [ ] How It Works: The experimental instrument has a vane anemometer head which produces an electrical output signal with a frequency directly proportional to the rotating speed of the vane anemometer shaft. The commercially available ABBIRKO FLOWMASTER anemometer head was used in this instrument. In the signal conditioning circuits the electrical signal from the anemometer is converted into pulses, which are counted during either 3-second or 1-minute intervals, depending on the position of the operator's control switch. (Readout is either "instantaneous" or averaged for a period of one minute.) The number of pulses counted is then translated (integrated and divided by a constant) in the logic circuits to get average speed. Average air velocity in feet per minute is displayed in illuminated digits. (See simplified diagram of circuitry.)

"In this study, physical, chemical and microscopic characteristics of high phosphorus oolitic hematite were studied firstly. Based on which, the new methods of high phosphorus hematite used in the æsolid state reduction by rotary hearth furnace - magnetic separationÆ and iron nugget by rotary hearth furnace direct reduction processes were discussed. The results showed that high temperature, low basicity and high carbon content is conducive for the apatite in iron ore to reduce into molten iron, but not conducive to the removal of phosphorus. Through optimisation of process parameters, dephosphorisation rate of high phosphorus hematite is more than 60 per cent by æsolid state reduction roasting-magnetic separationÆ process while that is up to 80 per cent by iron nugget process. Les haldes à stériles contenant des minéraux sulfureux réactifs constituent un milieu favorable à la production du drainage minier acide (DMA). Au sein de ces haldes, les processus physiques, géochimiques et biologiques qui mènent à la production du DMA sont nombreux et complexes. Un des aspects critiques qui affecte la génération de DMA est la distribution et le mouvement de l?eau dans les roches stériles. La modélisation numérique est un outil qui permet de comprendre, pour éventuellement contrôler, les mouvements de l?eau (et donc réduire la production du DMA) dans les haldes pendant la période d?exploitation de la mine et à sa fermeture. Plusieurs simulations numériques des écoulements non saturés dans des haldes ont été effectuées. Pour ces simulations, on a considéré divers types de matériaux, diverses conditions atmosphériques et diverses configurations géométriques. Les simulations réalisées montrent que l?on peut contrôler les mouvements de l?eau en introduisant des couches de matériaux fins intercalées dans les haldes formées de matériaux grossiers. Des couches horizontales ne sont cependant pas appropriées puisqu?elles peuvent, dans certains cas, favoriser la création de zones humides susceptibles d?amplifier les effets du DMA. Une faible inclinaison des couches de matériaux fins vers l?extérieur permet de palier à ce problème. Les couches inclinées favorisent un drainage des haldes vers la périphérie. Ceci a pour effet de garder sèche une grande partie des stériles et de réduire, par le fait même, la production du DMA.

The segregation process consists of heating crushed oxidized or mixed oxide-sulfide copper are with a copper-volatilizing salt and carbonaceous material at about 750° C. to produce metallic copper which is recovered from the furnace calcines by conventional sulfide flotation. The Bureau of Mines made a number of bench-scale laboratory tests on two copper ores to determine the relative merits of using halogen salts, potassium chlorate, or various salt mixtures as volatilizing agents in segregation of the copper. Laboratory investigation of typical siliceous and calcareous oxidized ores revealed that sodium chloride was a better segregating agent than the other salts. Calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium fluoride, or potassium chlorate gave nearly as good segregation as the sodium chloride on the siliceous ore. Segregation of the calcareous ore with calcium chloride was nearly as good as that obtained with sodium chloride, but inferior segregation resulted when magnesium chloride, sodium bromide, or potassium chlorate was employed. The use of sodium bromide or sodium iodide on the siliceous ore, and of sodium fluoride or sodium iodide on the calcareous are, gave appreciably poorer segregation than sodium chloride or the other salts. Other tests of the ores, using mixtures of sodium chloride and the other halogen salts or potassium chlorate, gave segregation approaching that obtained with sodium chloride.

Polymeric materials, such as polyurethanes and rubbers, are widely used in the mining industry because of their moderate cost and excellent mechanical properties. Such polymers have been used mainly in transportation (conveyor belt systems and pipes coatings) and screening, for their appreciable abrasion wear resistance. Studies revealed the complex influence of test parameters, such as grit size and applied normal load, on the abrasion wear process for polymers. In this study, the abrasive wear behavior of several polyurethanes and rubbers were investigated at room temperature according to a rotary drum abrasion method (DIN 53516). Wear tests were carried out at 26 cm/s test speed and load value of 5 N and 10 N. Corundum paper grit varying from 60 to 400 mesh were used as an abrasive surface. After each test the mass loss of the pin was recorded and the wear rates were calculated from wear volume. The wear surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscopy.

The need for legislative reform of health and safety legislation has been recognised in New Zealand for about a decade. Previous legislation did not cover all work places, many areas were excluded from coverage, and there were at least 14 different acts and dozens of sets of regulations dealing with various aspects of health and safety.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, four underground respirable dust surveys were conducted to determine factors affecting belt entry dust levels and how using belt air to ventilate work areas affected dust exposures. Belt entry dust levels on the surveyed longwall and continuous miner sections averaged 0.59 and 0.26 mg/m3, respectively. The stageloader-crusher contributed an additional 0.5 to 0.9 mg/m3 of dust to belt air, while the feeder-breaker contributed 0 to 0.2 mg/m3 of dust. A 1,000-ft increase in belt entry length or a 200-to 500-st-per-shift increase in production resulted in roughly a 0.1-mg/m3 increase in dust. Using the belt entry as an intake entry on the continuous miner section appeared to reduce dust levels by 0.1 to 0.3 mg/m3 during cutting. Belt air was not used to ventilate the face on the longwall section.

The installation of the George Fisher flowsheet in the lead/zinc concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited has recently been completed. The George Fisher flowsheet involved moving flotation capacity from the lead circuit to the zinc circuit and changes in zinc circuitry, changes in the reagent regime and increased regrinding capacity, using IsaMills, to regrind some streams to 80 per cent passing seven microns. The project was highly successful, delivering a five per cent increase in zinc recovery within a fortnight of commissioning. The George Fisher flowsheet was developed over six years. Laboratory work built upon the knowledge gained from investigating and processing the Mount Isa and Hilton orebodies. The engineering design and construction for the brownfield expansion of the existing lead/zinc concentrator had significant involvement from the operational, maintenance and technical personnel. Experienced personnel were seconded from the concentrator to the design and construction groups to ensure smooth integration of the new flowsheet into the existing concentrator with minimum downtime, and maximising the reuse of existing equipment. The combination of thorough design, good project integration with operations, and a good commissioning plan allowed almost immediate delivery of project gains. The project was highly successful, the full design improvements were achieved within two weeks, allowing the focus to move to developing future improvements.

New methods of analysing and modelling flotation circuits have been developed as part of the AMIRA P9 mineral processing research project. A study using these techniques was conducted on the Olympic Dam copper flotation circuit to provide the following outcomes: an estimate of the flotation cell hydrodynamic properties and froth performance characteristics, and identification of potential areas for improvement; an estimate of the feed floatability parameters for basic model development; and identification of potential flotation circuit improvement opportunities. A flotation circuit model of the Olympic Dam copper concentrator was developed using the data collected from mass balanced site surveys, along with hydrodynamic data, froth performance data and numerous laboratory batch flotation tests. The simulator that has been developed from the model has the ability to estimate the influence of selected changes (such as circuit changes) on flotation circuit performance. Several stream destination simulations were conducted to provide guidance for further testwork and possible circuit improvements. The results from these simulations are presented.

"Noranda’s Brunswick mine is a 10 000 t/d producer of lead-zinc-copper-silver ore that has been in operation since 1964. Mining of this multiple lens deposit is primarily by blasthole stoping techniques between 400 m and 1200 m below surface. The combination of a high overall extraction ratio, an overall steeply dipping tabular shape, and high horizontal stresses (twice the vertical) have elevated the induced stress regime to levels comparable to much deeper operations. Improved mine design, and a better understanding of how the rock mass responds to mining in high-stress environments is essential to improve overall recoveries and maintain safety. Seismic monitoring has proven to be an essential tool at Brunswick, for both short-term safety of workers, and long-term strategic planning.Practical case studies illustrate how seismic data, particularly source parameter information, can be used to measure the rockmass response to mining and improve mining layouts in difficult regions. As the global trend continues toward mining in deeper, higher stress environments (e.g., South African Witswatersrand Basin, Sudbury Basin) and as local extraction and thus ground stresses continue to increase in existing deposits, seismic monitoring will play a critical role in mining safely and economically."

Improved mine design, and a better understanding of how the rock mass responds to mining in high-stress environments is essential to improve overall recoveries and maintain safety. Seismic monitoring has proven to be an essential tool at Brunswick, for both short-term safety of workers, and long-term strategic planning. Practical case studies illustrate how seismic data, particularly source parameter information, can be used to measure the rockmass response to mining and improve mining layouts in difficult regions. As the global trend continues toward mining in deeper, higher stress environments (e.g., South African Witswatersrand Basin, Sudbury Basin) and as local extraction and thus ground stresses continue to increase in existing deposits, seismic monitoring will play a critical role in mining safely and economically.

The application of gob-side entry retaining (GER) in steeply pitching seam longwall mining with a hard roof has always been a difficult problem. Based on the simplified roof beam mechanical model, the traditional gob-side entry retaining by packing (GERP) roof structure evolution process and its problems with use in steeply pitching seams are analyzed. Therefore, based on the unique characteristics of the gangue rolling and accumulating in the steeply pitching seam, this contribution proposes an innovative method of gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting (GERRC) in steeply pitching seam and details its technical process. The roof structures of the GERRC and the GERP are compared. Taking the Chang Gouyu Coal Mine as a case study, field experiments were carried out. This research finds that the GERRC can both overcome the impact of rolling gangue on roadside support and make the rolling and stacking gangue become a roadside support. The roof structure of the GERRC is in a one-time statically indeterminate state, which is conducive to the stability of the roadway. In the field test, the total displacement of the roadway roof and floor is 97 mm, the supporting pressure of the serried single props is less than 28 MPa, and the props have no obvious bending phenomenon.

Being a source of structural materials for many centuries, the modern image of the ferrous metallurgy is burdened with obsolete technologies with disregard towards new environmental protection requirements. The production cycle of metallurgical products have two clear-cut stages: I . production of liquid metal and casting into steel billets; and 2. processing of steel billets in solid state under high temperature to produce various shapes and profiles of metal products. Plastic deformation of metal at the second stage is least associated with environmental pollution and is presently being provided with more and more advanced equipment.
