Let’s start off with your assessment of the mining industry. Today, the status of the mining industry is stronger than it has been over the previous few years. While mining continues to be a major part of the world’s economic foundation, the industry is gaining strength due to rebounding metals and minerals prices. And now, with these rising prices and the changes the industry instituted during the years when mining-related commodities were selling at low prices, our stronger, more productive and internationally competitive industry should flourish. Mining remains an essential business and the industry is far ahead of the game when it comes to the trend of globalization as a key to sustained growth. Also, the industry continues to realize increased productivity through technological innovations. And an increasing number of countries are moving towards capitalism, which opens doors for exploration and mining within their borders. After looking at all of these factors, I believe that the mining industry will only continue to gain momentum in the future.

This report presents a complete coverage of results from Bureau of Mines preliminary research and the field application of explosive fracturing techniques to prepare oil shale for in situ recovery of shale oil. Small-scale surface tests were conducted to determine the feasibility of using a nitroglycerin-base explosive for creating rock fractures. Prior to underground testing, surface and near-surface tests with liquid explosives showed that explosions in sheetlike layers simulating underground fractures would propagate effectively. Successful surface experiments were conducted using layers of explosive placed between glass plates and explosive-saturated sand confined in small-diameter metal tubes. The tests in glass-plate reservoirs and metal tubes demonstrated that nitroglycerin would detonate and the explosion would propagate in cracks as thin as 1/32 inch and through distances up to 12 feet. In a shallow field test, nitroglycerin was detonated in a vertical crack in limestone and produced extensive fracturing. Explosive fracturing tests were performed in oil shale formations on seven sites near Rock Springs, Wyo. The procedures included (1) displacing and detonating nitroglycerin in natural or hydraulically induced fracture systems; (2) detonating nitroglycerin in wellbore shots; (3) displacing and detonating nitroglycerin in induced fractures followed by wellbore shots using pelletized TNT; and (4) detonating wellbore charges using pelletized TNT. The research on oil shale formations demonstrated that nitroglycerin displaced in a natural or hydraulically induced fracture would detonate, and the explosion would propagate through the explosive-filled fracture. Shooting a pattern of wells in oil shale at 100-foot depth with wellbore charges of pelletized TNT developed a satisfactory interwell fragmented zone. Tests performed on other sites at depths to 385 feet caused fragmentation of rock around the wellbore and provided interwell communication. Fourteen methods used to evaluate the extent and degree of fragmentation in the explosive fractured oil shale are discussed.

Many analysts have had difficulty in obtaining accurate and consistent determinations of the volatile matter in low-temperature coke when the usual standard method for coal was followed. The tendency is toward too-high results, due to mechanical losses which are extremely difficult to avoid or control. With cokes there also may be an error due to excessive oxidation of the fixed carbon. Much of the earlier experimental work on the volatile-matter determination in coal, such as that of Parr,5 Fieldner and Davis,6 and others, 7 has been on the effect of time, temperatures, shape and size of crucibles, method of applying heat, and type of furnace, all of which data has evolved the present A.S. T. M.8 standard method for volatile matter in coal and coke. It is not the purpose of this investigation to deal directly with the above phases of the procedure, but rather to study some of the factors affecting she results in those types of fuel which give erroneous results due to mechanical losses.

Using recent thermodynamic data for the carbides and oxides of tantalum, columbium, and vanadium, the stable solid phases aboue 1300°K and at 1 atm CO(g) pressure in each M-C-O system have been determined. Pourbaix-Ellingham diagrams have been constructed and are used to estimate the minimum temperatures necessary to obtain these metals by carbothermic reduction under reduced pressures. TANTALUM, columbium, and vanadium react with carbon to form the M,C and MC carbide phases. The M,C carbides have narrow homogeneity ranges, but the MC phases possess considerable ranges of homogeneity.' The free energies of formation of the MC carbides were recently measured, and those of MC and M2Ccarbides have been estimated., (The notations MC and MC denote, respectively, the carbide compositions at the carbon-rich and at the metal-rich boundaries of the homogeneous MC phase.) In this paper, these carbide data are combined with thermodynamic data for the oxides to predict the stable phases in the Ta-C-O, Cb-C-O, and V-C-O systems at specified temperatures and oxygen pressures. M-C-O PHASE DIAGRAMS The solid phases in equilibrium above 1300°K for each M-C-0 system are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Above 1300°K, the vapor would consist entirely of carbon monoxide; and these phase diagrams were obtained by specifying the vapor pressure of CO(g) to be 1 atm. The temperature at which any two solid phases become unstable is specified along the two-phase equilibrium lines in each diagram. To simplify the diagrams, all solid phases in the Ta-C-O and Cb-C-O systems are represented as stoichiometric compounds. The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1931 was 30, a decrease of 20 fatalities or 40 per cent from the number killed in 1930. As a result of the decrease in the number of fatalities for 1931, the fatality curve of tie California petroleum industry reached its lowest point in nine years. Although reductions in personnel--which permitted the retention of a select and experienced class of workmen, decreased active field-development work, and curtailed production--undoubtedly have had a marked effect on reducing the number of fatalities in 1931, the decrease also has resulted from continued accident-prevention efforts. Statistics show that a direct relationship exists between development activity and the number of men accidentally killed in the drilling and producing division of the California petroleum industry. For example, when the average number of drilling wells in 1930 was 29 per cent less than in 1929, the number of men accidentally killed at drilling wells dropped 48 per cent; and when the average number of drilling wells in 1931 decreased 52 per cent from 1930, the number of fatalities at drilling wells decreased 58 per cent. The relationship between field-development work and fatality frequency is significant because each year at least 50 per cent of all the fatalities in the California petroleum industry occur in the drilling and producing division. This relationship should serve to guide the accident-prevention efforts of the industry, especially in the drilling and producing division, toward checking an increase in fatal accidents when development activity again takes an upward trend.

Fine phosphate feed is considered to be slime and normally disposed of as a discard in settling ponds or dumped as landfill. The purpose of this research was to establish whether commercially acceptable qualities and yields could be obtained from this material using dry separation methods. The results obtained from the electrostatic separation of <105 µm phosphate ore are presented. An existing separator was upgraded in order to improve on product and flotation concentrate recovery, to test different mineral, and to reduce particle residence time between the charging chamber and the separating zone of the separator. The operating conditions were varied according to the charges imparted to the particles in the electric field, and according to other device parameters. Parameters such as splitter position, charge reversal, rotation speed, charging voltage and separating voltage. The <105 µm phosphate feed was concentrated under both triboelectrification and inductive charging. The use of inductive charging and charge reversal resulted in a significant increase in grade for <105 µm phosphate feed, with the P205 grade increasing from about 12 per cent to 20.50 per cent, and a recovery of 26.30 per cent under a single stage of separation. It was found that better separation was achieved at rotation speed of 6000 r/min, -8 kV charging voltage, and 25 kV separating voltage.

INTRODUCTION With only about 30% of Japan&apos;s entire population served by sewer systems at the end of 1980, extensive sewerage construction programs have been implemented. As major sewer networks in large cities are near completion, construction of smaller sewer networks in less populated areas and branch sewers in urban areas is on the rise, where a demand for sewer tunnels of 600mm to 1500mm diameter is very heavy. The pipe jacking technique, usually employed to excavate such small diameter tunnels, therefore has become the subject of further technological development and sophistication to cope with the increasing volume of construction. At the 1979 RETC, the state of the art on the slurry shield tunneling method at that time was reported. This paper is a follow up to the last paper and discusses a newly developed boulder crushing equipment and automatic pipe jacking system for the slurry shield method and their application. Such technological advancement as high-degree mechanization and automation will significantly improve tunneling operations in response to the aging society to come. Through application of the technique on so called factory automation, this is a step towards field automation for the construction industry.

Air tabling of zircon-rich non-conductor products containing quartz enables most of the fine quartz present to be rejected without a markedloss of zircon. The coarser quartz in the air table feed can be separated from the zircon by screening one or more air table products, the oversize products containing most of the quartz and little of the zircon. Air tabling, with or without screening, is more efficient than wet tabling alone for the removal of fine quartz, but not for the removal of coarse quartz. Practically all of the quartz can be separated from the zircon by using wet tabling in conjunction with hydraulic classification, or by using air tabling in conjunction with dry launder treatment, in which a degree of sizing takes place that is advantageous for subsequent air tabling.INTRODUCTIONBack-dune and inland beach sand deposits usually contain fine wind-blown quartz, and neither spiral nor wet table concentration, alone or in conjunction, makes a clean separation of heavy minerals from quartz. Many rutile plants recover rutile and zircon from a low-quartz, wet-table concentrates by means of magnetic and electrostatic separation; some rutile and zircon are lost in the table tailings. Other rutile plants, and two of the ilmenite plants in Western Australia, recover rutile or ilmenite respectively, from a spiral concentrate containing several per cent of quartz, and then subject the non-conductor product to an additionalgravity concentration process to separate the zircon from the quartz. Some zircon is lost in the additional gravity process, but all of the rutile or ilmenite in the spiral concentrate is, or should be, recovered as high-grade concentrate. The higher recovery of rutile or ilmenite by this treatment method is offset by the expense of drying part of the feed twice, as a wet process is usually used to separate the quartz...

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory semicontinuous and continuous heavy liquid tests to determine the feasibility of producing commercial-grade products from the high-clay sylvinite ores of the Permian Basin in New Mexico. Continuous test operations demonstrated that concentrates containing 59.9 percent K2O and recoveries of over 75 percent of the contained potash can be obtained. The organic heavy liquid was effectively recovered by vaporization, condensation, and absorption methods. Less than 5 parts per million of heavy liquid vapors were released to the atmosphere. This loss represents only 0.02 pound of heavy liquid per ton of ore treated.

This purchase led to the development of the first substantial tin mine in North America. This paper deals with the drillingand blasting operations at Rio Algom, in particular the use of emulsion explosives technology.This presentation describes what emulsion explosives and Heavy AN/FO are, and the support system used to deliver these products to the blast site.HistoryThe East Kemptville mine site was discovered by Shell Canada Resources (SCR) in July 1978. SCR started diamond drilling on the tin prospect in March 1979. After 8220 m of BQ drilling, it was estimated a reserve of 56 000 000 tonnes of 0.165% Sn was present.The property, which is located 54 km northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (Fig. 1), showed, after a feasibility study that, given an ore treatment rate of 9000 tonnes per day, a mine life of 17 years could be expected.GeologyThe tin deposit of the East Kemptville Mine, occurs in granitic rocks at their contact with metasedimentary rocks. The mineralization is in the form of cassiterite with associated sulphides of copper and zinc. The tin occurs in a stockwork of tin bearing Greisen alteration zones.East Kemptville MineThe mine planned an open pit operation with the first five years being mined at a rate of 14 000 tonnes per day, of which 5000 tonnes will be waste and low grade ore. Eventually, the total mining rate will be 21 000 tonnes per day, including 12 000 tonnes of waste and low grade ore. Figure 2 shows the general layout of the mine site.East Kemptville Chooses Emulsion ExplosivesIn December 1984, East Kemptville Mine awarded the Explosives Division of C-I-L Inc. a contract to supply explosives to the borehole. The system chosen gives East Kemptville the on-the-bench choice of regular AN/Fa, or a high density, Heavy AN /Fa product called SuperAN· or a water resistant emulsion explosive called MAGNAFRAC· for holes that cannot be dewatered.Emulsion ExplosivesAn emulsion is an intimate mixture of two liquids that do not dissolve in each other. Four years of intensive exploration effort by Newmont Mining Corp. came to a climax May 27 in Carlin, Nevada, when local, state and federal officials joined with company officers at a dedication ceremony saluting the start-up of the firm&apos;s wholly- owned subsidiary, Carlin Gold Mining Co. Before an invited audience at the plant site, Newmont&apos;s President Plato Malozemoff and Nevada&apos;s Senator Howard D. Cannon pushed a lever and watched the new melting furnace rotate until a brilliant orange-red stream of molten gold poured forth from its mouth. Two 1200-oz bricks of bullion were poured that day, and they are the first of many that will lift this mine into the number two slot among U.S. gold producers and fourth among all gold mines on the North American continent. Although Newmont Mining first entered the gold mining business in 1929 in Grass Valley, California, the Company had operated no gold producers since the well-known Government directive L208, issued in 1942, closed down U.S. gold mines for the duration of World War 11. Now it is back in the business in a big way-a $10 million mine and plant capable of producing 200,000 oz. per year. All the gold from the Carlin operations is earmarked for the U.S. Mint in San Francisco.

Spray-on ground support membranes (GSM) or thin support liners hold today perhaps as much potential to impact underground (u/g) ground support operations as dry and later wet-mix shotcrete when introduced to mining in the latter part of the 20th century. This emerging technology has come a long way from the time the first single component experimental coatings were tested in the mid-1980s. Due to a number of factors, including occupational health risk and mine safety regulations, it has taken quite some time for the development of non-hazardous membrane products. However, at this junction most existing u/g mines that employ more conventional forms of ground support could benefit from evaluating GSM technology as a means of improving safety and the bottom line. The same is especially true for future mine developments. This paper describes Master Builders Inc.’s CS1251 GSM product and its implementation. It discusses the situations in which GSM may replace other forms of ground support. Furthermore, it evaluates GSM costs & safety issues and looks at present applications and the potentially bright future of this technology.

IN the construction of a set of ordinary mine plans, two axes or coordinates are used; also, two different projections are essential viz., a plan (horizontal projection) and longitudinal section (vertical projection). In isometric projection three axes are employed-one axis vertical and the remaining two inclined to it at angles of 120&#176;, also making an angle of 120&#176; with one another, as shown in Fig. 1. The two inclined axes are used to plot the horizontal projection, while altitudes are plotted on the vertical axis. As an illustration, consider the ease of a simple object, such as a box. To show all the dimensions in the usual manner requires two drawings-a plan and elevation, as in Fig 2.

Twenty-three companies mined kaolin in nine States in 2004. Production was estimated to be 7.6 Mt (8.3 million st) valued at $912 million, based on preliminary data. This was a slight decrease from 7.68 Mt (8.46 million st) valued at $939 million in 2003.Georgia was the leading producer state with an estimated 6.5 Mt (7.1 million st) in production. It was followed, in decreasing order of tonnage, by South Carolina, Alabama, California, Texas, Arkansas, Nevada, Florida and North Carolina. Georgia accounted for nearly the entire domestic water-washed, delaminated, and pigment-grade calcined kaolin production. Consumption Sales to the paper industry accounted for 49 percent of domestic sales and 64 percent of total sales. Other major markets for domestic sales were refractory products (10 percent), paint (5 percent), fiberglass (4 percent), catalysts (3 percent) and rubber (2 percent).Paper coating and filler markets accounted for about 87percent of export sales of kaolin.

During 1983, Ecuador&apos;s gross domestic product (GDP) decreased by a reported 3.3% in real terms, the second consecutive decline in the economy after more than a decade of growth generated mainly by petroleum export revenues. The slowdown was due, in part, to the effects of the world recession, lower foreign demand for oil, depressed world oil prices, and reduced demand and prices for Ecuador&apos;s traditional agricultural exports. Inflation accelerated to an estimated 55% annual rate. The sucre was devalued in March, for the second time in less than a 12-month period, by 27% after remaining unchanged during the previous decade. In addition, continuous adjustments were made every weekday, effectively devaluing the sucre another 30% by yearend. Ecuador&apos;s production of crude petroleum increased almost 12% in 1983 compared with that of 1982. Average daily production was 237,100 barrels per day (bbl/d), up from 211,300 bbl/d in 1982.

In most oil fields, natural gas is the major source of energy causing flow of oil to the well. The amount of gas produced With the oil generally exceeds actual energy requirements, so that in time the gas reserve of the field becomes seriously depleted and the oil production nest be stimulated by some auxiliary means. One of these is to repressure the oil formation with natural gas; or, where a gas supply is not available, often air is used. Although air is a cheap and convenient repressuring medium, its use sometimes is attended with several disadvantages. First, the return air-gas mixture decreases rapidly in fuel value, often until it can be used no longer as a source of power. At the same time, explosive mixtures may result if recycling is used, causing hazards to life and equipment. Second, some fields experience considerable trouble with the formation of emulsions which become increasingly difficult to treat. Although there is no definite proof that air repressuring always causes these emulsions, many operators are convinced that this is the case.

As part of a program for developing methods of using domestic titanium deposits, the Bureau of Mines investigated methods for chlorinating titanium slags prepared from titaniferous minerals by electrosmelting. Titaniferous slags were made from ilmenites in the following deposits: Valley County, Idaho; Trail Ridge, Fla.; Aiken, S. C.; and Maclntyre, N. Y.; titaniferous magnetite from Iron Mountain, Wyo., were also evaluated. The tests were made in two chlorinators, a 4-inch and a 36-inch unit. Preliminary testing was done in a 40-millimeter bench-type unit. Chlorine gas was contacted with a loose mixture of titaniferous slag and carbon at a high temperature to form titanium tetrachloride. The moving-bed system used in this work involved a downward movement of feed countercurrent to the chlorine flow, and residues continuously removed from the bottom of the reactor. The performance characteristics of these slags depended on their composition, which varied widely according to the geographic source of the ore. The results showed that all but two of the slags could be chlorinated as effectively as rutile, converting 70 to 80 percent of the titanium to the tetra-, chloride. The two slags that proved difficult were made from New York ilmenite and Wyoming titaniferous magnetite. These slags contained enough magnesium to cause clinkering, which necessitated that the bed be prematurely withdrawn before more than 70 percent of it could react. The iron content of the slags did not interfere with operating the chlorinators. The data from the 4-inch and the 36-inch units were in agreement on the relative amenability of the slags to chlorination.

In evaluating the installation of an in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) system for any mine, a number of options are available for each of the dig side, transport and dump side operations. Some of them are moreappropriate than others; given the pit arrangement, the material being handled and the rates at which it needs to be moved. This paper seeks to document the options that might be employed, and to rank them in terms of their applicability at any mine and their practicality overall, with a view to nominating those that would be most suitable for further study.
