The rotary drilling of rocks is widespread technology in mining and in tunnelling. The paper describes the results of research by aim to find relationships between optimal drilling and sound signal of drilling machine. The optimisation criterion has been formulated as the minimisation of specific energy with maximal effective speed of drilling in process of the rock disintegration. The research in this field has been made on experimental drilling stand. Our monitoring system has measured following variables: the pressing force of core drill, the revolutions of drilling head, the length of drilling, the time, the power, and the acoustic signals. For measurement of acoustic signals have been used very sensitively sound meter MEDIATOR 2238. From this measurements have been processed acoustic spectrums. Then we are found relationships between optimal control of drilling and composition of acoustic spectrum. On base of experimental results, we can formulate the optimal control following: æTo achieve the minimum difference between the equivalent sound level at the load and idle modes only at the representative frequency (f = 1000 Hz)Æ. The representative frequency dependences on type of the rock New method based on these relationships enables the optimal control of drilling machine by using measured acoustic signals only.

In the Ngakuru area, zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lake sediments and ignimbrites. The deposits are associated with sinters, hydrothermal eruption breccias, and quartz-adularia altered fault breccias: all indicators of a shallow epithermal environment. Several of the deposits are adjacent to epithermal gold prospects. Zeolites are most abundant in lacustrine tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation, a 100-300 m thick sequence of siltstone, tuff, diatomite, sandstone and conglomerate. The formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 270 Ka, and is unconformably overlain by alluvial sands and gravels which are younger than 20 Ka. Individual zeolite deposits contain 30-80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified tuff beds. The tuff beds are locally overlain by diatomite. The tuffs are composed mainly of glass shards and pumice clasts, with minor volcanic plagioclase, quartz and biotite crystals. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, K-feldspar and smectite are also present. The distribution of the Ngakuru Formation is controlled by northeast trending normal faults, which separate it into the Ngakuru and Guthrie grabens. A silicified (quartz-adularia altered) hydrothermal breccia along one of the fault zones suggests that the faults acted as feeders for heated water that caused the deposition of the zeolite minerals. Some of the zeolite deposits are adjacent to sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias. The location of the sinter about 20 m above one deposit indicates that the zeolites were formed at a depth of 20 to 70 m below the paleosurface. The hydrothermal eruption breccias contain clasts of altered ignimbrite, which contain geochemically anomalous gold and silver values. By analogy with their occurrence in active geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, mordenite and clinoptilolite in the Ngakuru deposits probably formed at temperatures of 60-150oC from near-neutral pH waters as a result of interaction with glass-rich tuff beds. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits are therefore interpreted as shallow hydrothermal alteration zones within larger epithermal gold-bearing systems.

The principle of personal safety is as old as the human race. The application of this principle to industry is of much more recent origin, and may be said to be almost exclusively the product of the twentieth century. The enormous strides in technique and production mode prior to the turn of the century had been achieved without any real regard for the crippled human by-products of that expansive era. It was accepted that. accidents were inevitable and formed part of the price that must be paid for production. It was not until 1885 that the first Workmen's Compensation Act was passed in Germany making the employer financially liable for injuries suffered on his plant.With awakening social conscience came the first organised efforts to reduce accidents in industry. Early 19th century literature dealing with the development of powerdriven machinery and the growth of industry in Europe contains many references to the unsafe and unhealthy working conditions that accompanied the change-over from the home workshop to the industrial plant. By the year 1900, there were in Germany - and a little later in England governmental regulations dealing with the guarding of hazardous machinery. American industry, now the acknowledged leader in industrial safety, admits freely that when an organised safety movement commenced in that country, there was already a considerable amount of information available to them from European experience. Part I in this series of papers considered the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper sulfide concentrates and reviewed the metallurgical testing and initial process development for this technology. This initial work resulted in the development of a process flowsheet utilizing superfine grinding (to a P98 of 12 to 15 µm and P80 of 6 to 7 µm), pressure leaching at 160° to 170ºC, followed by conventional solution extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) for the recovery of copper. However, this process required a significant amount of concentrated acid to be fed to the pressure leach vessel to meet the reaction requirements, representing a cost of between $0.03 and 0.05/lb copper (2006 basis) produced by the process. It was immediately recognized that the development of a process that did not require such a large acid addition would be advantageous. This paper, which is Part II in the series, describes the development of a process that incorporates medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning (DEW) in a novel and innovative process flowsheet. Phelps Dodge (a subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc.) refers to this as the ?MT-DEW-SX? process. This is one of a series of paper's being published by the Bureau of Mines on placer mining; it is written as a supplement to Information Circular 6788, "Placer Mining in the Western United States, Part III", by E. D. Gardner and C. H. Johnson which was published in February 1935. Since Information Circular 6788 was written (1933), considerable advance has been made in the technique of mining placer gravels with power shovels and draglines. Although new washing plants continue to be built in accordance with untried designs the trend of new installations is toward proved equipment. A substantial number of plants are now being operated successfully (1937).

Cobb County, located on the northwest side of Atlanta, GA, is continually growing and, like many other metropolitan areas, it needs to increase the capacity of its waste water system to meet future demand. The Cobb County Water System (CCWS) is the responsible agency for water distribution, waste water collection and treatment in most areas of the county. CCWS, one of the most progressive agencies in the metro-Atlanta area, is addressing its future waste water capacity needs in the southern part of the county with the construction of the South Cobb Tunnel and Pump Station. This project consists of an 8.8-km- (5.5-mile-) long, 8.2-m- (27-ft-) diameter, tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavated waste water storage and conveyance tunnel; six tangential vortex-flow intakes ranging from 1,533 to 5,700 L/s (35 to 130 mgd) peak flow capacity, two construction shafts, six 1.8-m (6-ft) finished diameter connecting tunnels ranging in length from 6 to 975 m (20 to 3,200 ft) and a 5,700-L/s (130-mgd) wet/dry pit pump station. The pump station will have a semi-circular wet well with a dividing wall that extends almost to the top of the shaft and a spilt dry well for reliable operation. Roller gates will control the flow to the wet well from the tunnel. The pump station will have six 1,420 L/s (32.5 mgd) pumps and two sets of stair wells and elevators. With a finished diameter of 32 m (104 ft) and a depth of 62 m (204 ft), this is the largest pump station shaft constructed so far in Georgia for the dewatering of a waste water tunnel. The pump station shaft was also the highlight of the well attended and successful 2009 Shaft Design and Construction Short Course held in Atlanta, Sept. 10-11. The two-day course was sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME and Pennsylvania State University and concluded with a field trip to the pump station shaft. The tunnel starts south of the city of Austell and finishes at the South Cobb Water Reclamation Facility (WRF), located on the banks of the [ ] Chattahoochee River just north of Interstate 20 (Fig. 1). The South Cobb Tunnel will run 30 to 137 m (100 to 450 ft) below the surface, with an average depth of about 91 m (300 ft), through metamorphic rocks (Fig 2). The construction contract was awarded to Shea-Traylor JV with the lowest bid price of $305 million and notice-to-proceed was given on July 14, 2008. Jordan Jones & Goulding, Inc. (JJG) is the project designer and performed the geotechnical investigations. Parsons/Jacobs Associates is the construction manager. The South Cobb Tunnel is CCWS?s second deep hard rock tunnel. The 15.3-km- (9.5-mile-) long, 5.5-m- (18-ft-) diameter TBM excavated the Chattahoochee Tunnel was the first deep tunnel to be construced in Cobb County. Construction began in 2000 and the project was completed four years later. It is located about 16 km (10 miles) northeast of the South Cobb Tunnel in similar geology. It was designed by JJG to meet east Cobb?s long-term waste water capacity needs and provide flow equalization to the R.L. Sutton WRF. The Chattahoochee Tunnel was named ?Outstanding Civil Engineering Project of the Year? by the Georgia Sec-tion of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2006.

The Ashlu Creek Hydro-electric project, located north of Squamish, BC, at the confluence of Ashlu Creek and the Squamish River, comprises a 49 MW run-of-river project and features a 4.08 m diameter, 4.4 km power tunnel and a 128 m deep drop shaft. The Ashlu Creek Hydro-electric project is being developed by Innergex under Ashlu Creek Investments Limited. Site civil works are being completed by Ledcor CMI of Vancouver with tunnel construction by Frontier Kemper Constructors ULC under a lump sum design-build contract. Site works got underway in September 2006 with the construction of the tunnel portal and laydown area. These site works required rock slope stabilization over a 50 m rock slope to secure the laydown area as well as the construction of a tail track muck tipping station and structural wall to facilitate TBM excavation and spoil removal. Starter tunnel construction commenced in early 2007 and TBM tunneling started in the late spring of 2007 and is planned to continue until early 2009. The power tunnel is being excavated using a 1,200 kW Wirth open-type hard rock TBM dressed with 31?17' cutters. The TBM featured two fixed mounted rock bolt drills behind the finger shield: these were removed and replaced with jacklegs to improve access. A probe drill at the end of the main beam is also present. The geology along the 4.4 km power tunnel comprises very strong and generally massive granitic bedrock with rock strength greater than 225 MPa. A unique feature of the project is that no subsurface investigations have been completed for the tunnel however extensive bedrock outcrops are present along the Ashlu Creek valley. A historical quarry exists approximately mid-way along the tunnel alignment that has exposed good quality granitic bedrock. TBM tunneling to date has achieved advance rates of 10?20 m/day with a maximum of 23 m and has encountered all of the anticipated six major fault zones where the installation of various standard high capacity tunnel support was successful to facilitate TBM advance through these sections.

A study of the swelling behaviour of a single batch of high-grade iron ore pellets during hydrogen reduction in a fixed bed showed that the extent of swelling is governed by the nucleation and growth of crystalline iron protuberances from the wüstite grains. Over the reduction temperature range 650 to 1000°C, it was found that substantial degrees of swelling can occur at temperatures in excess of 850°C, and significant variations in the swelling behaviour of individual pellets from different bed levels are observed under these conditions.The results are discussed in terms of a recent swelling theory and shown to be in general agreement.

Controlling noise has proven difficult in mining, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains common. In 2008, a South African Mine Health and Safety Council study focused on small- to medium-sized mines in relation to the milestones set by the industry to prevent NIHL. An evaluation of the compliance of ten diamond, sand, aggregate and Ready mix concrete mines and production sites with standards, legislation and best practice guidelines relating to NIHL prevention was conducted, using a noise compliance audit tool. The findings indicated that all mines surveyed had poor compliance with the international standards, compliance with International Standards Organization standards being the poorest. There was a clear distinction between the small and the medium-sized mines in their compliance with local standards and legislation (ranging from 14 per cent to 66 per cent). The areas of best compliance were audiology and medical examinations. The lower-than-expected compliance was largely attributable to shortcomings in hearing conservation programmes for occupational noise. Initiation of remedial practices in the small- to medium-scale mining sector to facilitate improvements in NIHL prevention and compliance with standards and legislation is recommended. As low-temperature heat-capacity and entropy data were available for only one sesquisulfide (cerium sesquisulfide), it appeared desirable to augment the information for this class of compounds by measuring the sulfides of antimony and indium. In addition a pressing need existed for data on indium sulfide to supplement vaporization studies in progress in the Department of Mineral Technology, University of California. This Bureau of Mines paper reports low-temperature heat-capacity measurements and entropy evaluations at 298.15° R. of antimony sesquisulfide of stoiehiometric composition (Sb2S3) and of indium sesquisulfide which was somewhat deficient in sulfur (In2S2.93). The data for the latter substance were adjusted to correspond to the stoichiome tric composition (In2S3 ) . Indium sesquisulfide has a lower entropy at 298.15' K, than either antimony sesquisulfide or cerium sesquisulfide, in line with the higher atomic density of the indium compound.

This report presents the results of six STATNAMIC loading tests that were carried out on four different pile types at the CALTRANS 280 Test Site (Bridge No. 34-46) in conjunction with the Tension Pile Test Program. The STATNAMIC testing was performed by Berminghammer Corporation at the request of the California Department of Transportation, Office of Geotechnical Engineering. Others performed the static tension (uplift) and compression loading tests which werecarried out on the piles tested using the STATNAMIC method. A summary of the STATNAMIC test results is presented and discussed, and the appropriate results are compared with the static test results

With access to the World Wide Web, many resources are readily available for improving claim reports. With a little time spent on line, a more thorough report can be created. Claimants will accept the conclusions of a report more readily when they can view support information on their own computer, particularly when the support information is not just from blasting related web sites. Some suggested resources are discussed including aerial pictures, local tax maps, topographical maps and home repair web sites. This paper provides suggestions for tracking down support information on the web and information on how to properly reference this information. Case studies of several claim investigations are presented. These are some examples of how a little time spent online provided clear and convincing evidence to support the conclusions of the investigation.

There are several methods available to estimate deflection and ultimate Capacity of laterally loaded piles. In this investigation an attempt has been made to verify the existing methods for prediction of ultimate lateral resistance and deflection with the laboratory and field test results reported in the literature. A 75 pile loading test data obtained from the literature was used to evaluate two methods designed to predict the ultimate lateral resistance of rigid piles and three methods designed to predict the lateral deflections of rigid piles and four methods designed to predict the lateral deflection of flexible piles subjected to lateral loads. The accuracy and precision of each method is quantified statistically. The statistical results of the overall analysis indicate that the mean values of the ratios of predicted to measured lateral capacities vary from 0.62 to 1.14 with an average of 0.88. However, the settlement predictions were much more widely scattered than the ultimate load predictions and in general all the methods have a tendency to under predict the deflections. A new method is proposed by modifying the Broms's method to estimate the lateral deflections of free headed rigid and flexible piles separately. The proposed modified methods were found to be reasonably good in comparison to existing methods and to overestimate deflections.

Whereas in the past, ladles were simply a means of transferring molten products from furnace tapholes to points of discharge be they casting pans or waste dumps, the ladle is now becoming a more integral and versatile piece of equipment in the pyrometallurgical plant. The drive behind this development is the need for continuous improvement in performance where better, faster and cheaper means remaining competitive in the global market. This paper will explore the technologies available for the rendering of a costly and otherwise cumbersome piece of pyrometallurgical equipment more efficient and versatile in adding value to the final product. Essentially it all revolves around heat and more importantly the loss of it when tapping. The common practice is to move the molten product to its point of discharge quickly with the minimum of interruption to prevent skulling and hence the cost associated with clearing it. The advances in Oxy-fuel burners, AC or DC ladle furnaces, converters, gas purging and high velocity, bath injection systems has increased the versatility of processes and enhanced the potential for adding value to intermediate products through down stream practices such as granulation and atomisation.

The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. "Methane is a signifi cant greenhouse gas. Methane is released from coal seams during the mining process, both in surface and underground operations. This uncontrolled release is termed æfugitive emissionsÆ and in underground mines is transferred to the atmosphere in ventilation air, known as ventilation air methane (VAM). The global VAM emissions are over 369 Mt of CO2-e/a (Butler, 2011; US EPA, 2010). Coal mines may abate this VAM or consider abatement should there be a price on carbon. These fugitive emissions are heading towards ten per cent of AustraliaÆs emissions by 2020 (Department of Climate Change, 2011).There are safety issues involved in VAM destruction. Due to the nature of coal, and coalextraction, unpredicted methane spikes above the lower-explosive-limit (LEL) can occur in theventilation air; for example outburst events or ventilation failure. This could lead to a mine fi re ifthe mine ventilation air was connected to a VAM abatement plant and the risks are left unmitigated.CorkyÆs is working with the mining industry to directly address these safety issues. CorkyÆs calltheir technology VAM RAB, which stands for ventilation air methane regenerative afterburner(VAM RAB). VAM RAB utilises the principles of a thermal oxidiser.This paper discusses fi ve independent layers of protection (ILPs) to fi rst stop methane reachingthe thermal oxidiser and secondly prevent the fl ame front from burning away from the VAMRAB. The test work completed or contemplated includes safety integrity level (SIL) assignmentto various vents, barriers and door systems to prevent a fl ammable mixture reaching the VAMRAB, proven rapid response methane monitoring sourced from the petrochemical industry, anddefl agration experiments to test the eff ectiveness of the passive geometry and active engineeringcontrols. These experiments and SIL assessments indicate that it is possible to safely connect theVAM RAB to a working coal mine.Further work is required to upscale the pilot safety work. Refi nement to the design is possible;for example improvement to safety duct controls once trialled at demonstration scale plus thermalenergy capture for power generation or other applications to provide heat. Nevertheless, thispaper shows how safety issues can be managed by a multilayer of protection approach usingvents, barriers and doors, and appropriate thermal oxidiser geometry."

In the last 50 years there have been tremendous improvements in equipment used in development on underground mines. Compressed air powered jacklegs have been replaced by high powered electro-hydraulic drifters on sophisticated drill jumbos and load haul dump units have taken over from small shovels and rail cars.Despite the increase in power applied in key parts of the development cycle, average advance rates have fallen and costs have increased. The factor that is most often regarded as the main contributor to slowing advance rates is increased support requirements. Whilst there is no denying that the drive to improve safety has resulted in the requirement for more bolting and the installation of a skin support (mesh or shotcrete), this is not the only factor.Within the industry as a whole, many of the basic principles of development appear to have been lost over time. This paper looks at a historical case study and discusses some of the features of old development cycles that are no longer in use. This highlights some of the basics that appear to have been forgotten. These may be indicators to what may provide improvements in the conventional drill and blast development cycle.CITATION:Ross, I T, 2014. Further evidence is presented as to the widespread occurrence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in nature in association with sulphide minerals. Leaching rates are discussed in terms of the effect of environmental parameters, particularly Eh and pH, on the bacterial process.The methods used to investigate leaching phenomena are described and the advantages and limitations of each method are discussed. A theoretical treatment of the bacterial leaching process is given which indicates that the optimum conditions arrived at by traditional methods are compatible with those deduced from consideration of the mathematics of continuous culture and thermodynamics
