A three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed of an instrumented section of a double-entry coal mine in order to provide a comparison between field measurements and existing analytic techniques. The BMINES computer code was used to perform the analysis. The sequence of excavation of the entries was considered, as well as the installation of rock bolts and cribbing during the mining cycle. The materials In the region under investigation were idealized into four rock types and coal. The rocks were assumed to be isotropically elastic, perfectly plastic. Coal was represented by an elastically anisotropic (transverse isotropy) and plastically isotropic model. A fracture yield criterion of the Coulomb form was used for all materials. The strength and stiffness of all materials were substantially reduced from available laboratory data to account for in-situ properties. Qualitative trends and stress distributions obtained from the calculation were found to be reasonable. However, computed displacements and closures were greatly exaggerated and an excessive degree of inelastic deformation was indicated in the coal, especially adjacent to the excavated faces. It was established that both these effects were the result of an excessive reduction in the strength and stiffness of the materials. The analysis underscores the need for three-dimensional calculations by identifying a number of important structural response parameters that would be either outside the scope of, or misrepresented by, two-dimensional analyses. The analysis also emphasizes the need for comprehensive and accurate measurement of material properties in order fully to exploit the power of the analytical techniques to generate reliable predictions.

In 1961, West Australian Petroleum's Eneabba No. 1 bore encountered 22 seams of coal totalling 40 ft in thickness between the depths of 6373 ft and 6441 ft. On analysis, this coal had a similar calorific value (8000-HOOO B.T.U./lb, assuming 20 per cent water) to the coal from the Collie Coalfield, Western Australia's only known area of commercially exploitable coal. Being buried to depths in excess of 6000 ft, the coal at Eneabba had developed weakly-coking properties, and thus, although much younger than the Permian coals of Collie, gave promise of being a major potential source of power for Western Australia.West Australian Petroleum undertook a programme of stratigraphic drilling and shallow test drilling to determine whether this coalhorizon persisted into the outcrop of the Lower Jurassic sediments in the Hill River district, 140 miles NNW. of Perth, and, if it was present, if the quality and quantity of the coal would warrant development of the deposits by open cutting. The coal horizon was identified in the near surface, but the poor quality of the coal and the complexity of the structure made development (in the area examined) uneconomic at the time.A strong seismic reflection in the Eneabba area occurs at the same depth as the Jurassic coals. This event originates within the upper beds of the Lower Jurassic and it is probable that the velocity contrast between the higher velocity siltstones and the very low velocity coals enhances this very strong, distinctive seismic reflection.This event can be followed on continuous seismic data over a large area of the northern Perth Basin, from 13 miles SE. of Dongara to 20 miles SW. of Coorow. It can be followed from a depth of 4000 ftnear Dongara to over 17,000 ft to the SE., so development of thisvast potential source of power will depend on the economics ofprocesses being developed for the production of power from theburning of coal seams in situ.INTRODUCTIONThe discovery of 22 seams of economically useable coaltotalling 40 ft in thickness in the Lower J urassic sedimentsof the Eneabba No. 1 bore (Fig. 1) led to the search forthese seams at economically workable depths. The deposit comprises two vertical, lenticular bodies emplaced in the allochthonous block of a Variscan thrust. Epigenetic mineralisation occurs as replacement of carbonated volcaniclastic rocks of Cambro-Ordovician age. The dominant sulphide minerals are sphalerite and galena with minor chalcopyrite; the main non-metallic mineral is quartz and there is hydrothermal silicification, chloritisation and sericitisation. Sulphur isotope values for sphalerite and galena are heavy and reflect the fundamental relationship between delta-34S in ZnS and in PbS, suggesting isotopic equilibrium. Four sphalerite-galena pairs yield temperatures between 163 and 218 degrees C, in good agreement with the 187-207 degrees C estimated by the Ga/Ge-sphalerite geothermometer. The ore sulphide was leached by the hydrothermal solution from diagenetic pyrite in the host rocks and disseminated sphalerite and galena in Cambrian carbonates

Open cut mining of the Black Rock chalcocite ore started in 1963. A ground movement monitoring programme was commencing in the early stages of mining when signs of instabilityof the western wall became apparent. Eventually 100.000 cu vd, of overburden Were removed beyond the rim of the western wall in an attempt to stabilize the slope. Subsequent decpenlug and mining till the final batter angle of 45 resulted in deterioration and mining was stopped 38 ft short in the ulltimte design deplh of 520 ft.Investigations showed that the geology of the western wall , was a major factor in the instability of this wall. A block jointed model was made 10 illustrate some of the pehomena observed. The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30,000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet.A typical assay for a monthly period is 14·40/0 Pb., 5·6 ozs. Ag., and 11· 60/0 Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and 'zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.MINING METHODSMining practice throughout the field varies only in minor details. The ore-bodies forming the Broken Hill Lode lie within complex folds arranged along a shear and vary in size and mineralogical associations, but all the mines have similar types. Some of the ore-bodies have weak walls, but the chief difficulty in mining is caused by "heads" and "flaws" in the ore.Besides these local weak areas there are ground movements-referred to later-of varying magnitude extending throughout the central portion of the lode where the large ore-bodies, several hundred feet wide, approached the surface.

This paper is concerned with a study on the floor heaving in the transport road of the GLI Omerler Colliery in Tuncbilek-Turkey. This gallery has been opened at the depth of 200 m through the formation of marl in 4.6 m width and 3.5 m height in cross section. Floor heaving occurred up to 70 cm in height in maximum and caused severe problems in railway and band-conveyor transportation in the main road. In addition; after the current panel mined out, the shield support units could not be transferred to the new panel because of the deformation of roadway cross-section. The I-profile steel arch supports also sank into the weak floor rock. This situation has been studied by numerical analysis using the FLAC3Dfinite difference program in order to investigate the rock mass behaviour around the opening. The obtained outputs of the numerical model have showed consistency with the amount of floor heaving in the gallery at 200 m depth. A new gallery has been driven at the depth of 115 m and M4 longwall panel has just been taken to production. So as not to encounter with the same problems at 200 m depth, especially longwall face moving problem, various numerical models have been studied in order to keep the floor heaving in the acceptable limits required to move shield support units. To form a true picture of the early history of Queensland, we must think of white settlement advancing like an incoming tide, wave by wave; each wave lapping ahead a little further than the last. The credit for opening up the country belongs to a large number of pioneers, each of whom pushed out just a little further than his predecessors.Contrary to what one might expect, Rockhampton district was settled by overlanders from the south and not from the ocean side. When the Archers, the pioneers of the Rockhampton district, reached Gracemere in 1853, settlement had already made its way down the valley of the Dawson River; for it was from Leith Hay's station at Rannes (a few miles below Mount Morgan) that the Archers advanced northward into the unknown, to find the river that the explorer, Ludwig Leichhardt, had told them must enter the sea somewhere near the Tropic of Capricorn.The Archers travelled northward from Rannes up the valley of the Dee, coming out on the edge of the Razorback Range not very far from the point at which the Dawson Valley Highway drops over into Poison Creek. (Their diary records the bearings from a lookout point to various peaks around Rockhampton, and to-day, by plotting back from these peaks, we can determine the exact spot at which they descended on to the Fitzroy Flats.) We can be certain, then, that they must have been the first white men to set eyes on Mount Morgan; though to them it would have seemed to be nothing more than an insignificant hill...

The objectives of the Continuous Shaft Lining (CSL) System are to reduce the costs, safety hazards, and time currently required in lining mine shafts with concrete. The CSL will line machine bored shafts downward from the shaft collar on a continuous basis using an inverted, pressurized slipforming technique. The technique for slip-forming downwards has been demonstrated and refined under this program. The approach taken involved laboratory scale testing of key features of the CSL concept. These feature tests included concrete distribution, concrete sealing, concrete slipforming and development of a reliable concrete mix. Based on these results, a full scale above-ground test facility and CSL were designed and fabricated. The objectives of these tests were to demonstrate the viability of the basic concept; to establish operating limits; and to provide input data and information for the design of a second generation shaft lining system. The results of the program have led to a CSL design and operational philosophy which will need to be tested in an underground environment before industry will accept the technology. However, the next generation CSL promises to meet all the original program technical objectives.

During the past several years — much to the delight of producing firms and countries — copper prices have surged from under $1 to more than $3/lb. Anyone familiar with the industry also knows that since the early 1970s the long-run trend in real copper prices has been significantly downward. This sharp contrast between short-run and long-run trends raises the issue of the forces behind these developments. What has been driving short-run prices up and long-run prices down? Simple economics suggests that it is all a matter of supply and demand. When demand is rising faster than supply, prices will rise and vice versa.

Important quantities of gold, silver, platinum-group metals, selenium, tellurium, and arsenic are recovered in the processing of copper concentrates. The objective of this Bureau of Mines study was to determine the occurrence of these elements in copper ores and to trace their distribution during subsequent processing steps. The study describes the important areas supplying concentrates, precipitates, and unrefined copper to the copper smelting and refining industry in a composite of the years 1971-74. The relative importance of these areas as a source of the respective byproducts is assessed. The lack of certain quantitative and assay data, recycling of dusts and slags, and the addition of scrap to the feed often complicates calculations and estimations of the byproducts in the smelter-refinery throughputs. Such volatile or low-boiling point elements as arsenic, selenium, and tellurium may be lost in gaseous and other emissions in various processing stages, or they may be concentrated in slags and residues for which samples were not available. The effects of antipollution legislation to improve control of sulfurous and other emissions that may affect recovery of certain byproducts was noted. A section on newer technology illustrating hydro-metallurgical techniques that may affect the recovery of minor metals is included.

This project had as its objective the experimental investigation of water capsule production utilizing the Southwest Research Institute's submerged nozzle encapsulation apparatus (U.S. Patent 3,389,194). Initial efforts on this project involved nozzle configuration and shell formulation optimization. The shell formulation developed on a prior program was modified during the course of the project to obtain the best balance of capsule breakage resistance and water retention. Subsequent effort centered on determining operating conditions which would produce the best quality capsules for each candidate shell formulation as determined by laboratory tests. Some preliminary work was done to increase the production capacity of the encapsulation equipment. The program was extended with major emphasis concerned with scale-up studies of capsule production capacity and the treatment of problems associated with grouting cartridge fabrication. During the course of the program, water-containing capsules were produced which have good long-term water retention, block resistance and adequate strength. Using a single-nozzle design, a production capacity of 15.9kg (35 pounds) per hour was demonstrated to give acceptable capsules based on initial results.

The abstract highlights the importance of determining the optimum line of extraction in continuous miner workings for improved safety and productivity. The study investigates three extraction techniques (diagonal, straight line along strike, and straight line along dip-rise) using 3D numerical modeling. The dip-rise extraction technique is found to be optimal due to lower stress and displacement, leading to a higher safety factor. The research also develops a continuous miner stability index (CMSI) to predict working face stability based on mining depth and pillar width-to-height ratio.

Demolition blasting next to an active railroad can be very challenging because of track safety, blasting vibrations, potential track fouling by blast debris, and short work windows on a live track. Recently, in eastern Washington, one of the major railroad companies has been aggressively constructing a second main track to accommodate the expected increase in rail traffic of natural resource products. To accommodate construction of the second line, the railroad company used blasting demolition techniques to remove an old railroad trestle pier on the Milwaukee Road that was in the footprint of the new track bed. The trestle bridged the present rail line and flanked the track with two massive 550-ton (499 tonne) twin-columned steel reinforced concrete piers. The railroad contracted with a specialized contractor to remove the south pier using blasting demolition techniques. The blasting design presented the following challenges: blasting during live track conditions and short work windows; designing a V-notch blast pattern to ensure the pier fell away from the live track; drilling, loading, and timing of the shot; maintaining blasting vibrations at the track below 4 in./sec (102 mm/sec); maintaining ambient overpressure noise below 133 dB; control of fly rock and debris; and track protection and emergency debris removal plan.

"In copper percolation-leaching plants the ore is usually crushed to a maximum size of about three-eighths inch. Ordinarily an ore is crushed as finely as feasible since the rate of extraction of copper is increased with decreasing size of particles owing to the greater surface exposed and. the shorter path required for solutions to come into contact with the minerals to be dissolved. However, greater degree of crushing also increases the amount of fines. When ores are charged into leaching vats the coarse and fine material tend to segregate, resulting in channeling of solutions and leaving the areas where fines predominate only partly leached. An improvement in the method of charging the ore into vats that would minimize the deleterious effects of the segregations of fines would increase the percentage extraction of copper.The Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.4 recently installed classifiers to remove the primary slimes from the ore, before charging it into the leaching vats. This necessitates a separate agitation treatment for the slimes.Recent publications5 of the bureau have shown the advantages of agglomeration followed by trickle leaching to extract copper from concentrator tailings. It was shown that when equal parts of ore crushed to about 1/4-inch size and concentrator tailings were agglomerated with approximately 10 per cent of moisture, either in the form of water or leaching solution, and the mass was charred into a leaching vat the ore could be treated successfully by open-drainage trickle leaching. Even with 30 or 35 per cent of minus 200-mesh material present the ore could be leached, if it was not flooded with solution.The results obtained in agglomerating ores and slimes suggested the possible advantages to be gained by wetting the crushed ore for standard percolation-leaching plants before charging it into the vats. Wetting the ore whould make the fine material and slime cohere to the larger pieces of ore thus tend to prevent segregation when the ore is charged into the vats. The bureau, at its southwest Experiment Station and in cooperation with the Department of Mining and University of Arizona, Tucson Ariz., therefore made a study to work: out A way in which slimes could be handled in percolation leaching. The study showed that the method of charging ore into the leaching vats governed the distribution the fines and consequently the rate extraction of copper. The results of the study reported in this paper."

INTRODUCTION Generations of tunneling engineers had to fight not only against bursting rock and squeezing ground but also against the destroying power of water. Intrusion of groundwater into the tunnel opening affects the stability of the tunnel support system, reduces the safety of the traffic inside the tunnel, induces corrosion of installed equipment, and provides for creeping currents at electric facilities. Aware of these problems, engineers of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and their consultants opened the way for a new approach in sealing a tunnel. It was made possible by accepting a new method of tunnel construction scarcely applied in the U.S. before. This new technique, the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), provided the basis for the successful installation of a PVC-membrane between two separated shells of tunnel lining, and the carefully directed drainage of groundwater. Beside of the economic benefits already attained by applying the NATM for tunnel construction, the Authority now saves millions of dollars otherwise necessary to maintain the tunnel during its lifetime (Garrett, 1986; Setzer, 1986). But there is a large number of leaking tunnels built according to conventional methods, some of them facing severe problems jeopardizing the safe utilization of these structures. Recently developed methods indicate that even those tunnels can be rehabilitated without extensive costs by draining and sealing them afterwards. A road tunnel in the Austrian Alps provides the scene for a major attempt to convert one of those leaking tunnels into a dry structure.

Under the first phase of this contract as reported in the Phase I report it was determined that certain types of commercially available molded case breakers are capable of interrupting mine dc power supplies of nominally 300 volts or 600 volts rating. These circuit breakers incorporate conventional overcurrent trip units but also can be operated by means of low power signals fed to a shunt trip coil. Further development in the Phase I program produced a means whereby a discriminating circuit breaker detector unit could sense the presence of illegitimate loads on the dc electrical system and cause the circuit breaker to trip. The detector unit operated by detecting the presence of 3000 Hz currents which were generated in the illegitimate loads by means of a 12 volt, 3000 Hz signal applied to the dc system. Further development of the program has continued in Phase II with the aim of verifying the practicability of the complete discriminating circuit breaker concept and developing other types of equipments required to implement a system. These other equipments include electronic means for raising the apparent impedance of high power legitimate loads and static filters for smaller loads. The results of laboratory work and limited underground tests have been successful. This report describes the system and the tests that have been conducted on the various equipments that comprise the complete Discriminating Circuit Breaker Concept.
