Fluctuating SO2 gas streams represent a difficult task for designers of SO2 removal systems (with respect to designing the plant), but in spite of the designers great efforts to solve the problems, the operation of such plants requires much care and attention. A fluctuating gas flow usually results from metallurgical smelting processes. Both gas composition and gas flow rate may vary. The first part of this paper outlines some existing technical solutions and presents the Pros and Cons of the different solutions. These solutions outline are: - Sulphuric acid plants operated with a preheater permanent in operation - Sulphuric acid plants with concentration increase of SO2 gas either using regenerative SO2 removal or cryogenic partial condensation of the SO2 - Sulphuric acid plants with additional burning of sulfur to increase SO2 content - Single-stage sulphuric acid plants followed by a tail gas system (which is) designed for periods of low SO2 input In the second part, this paper describes some existing technical solutions for removal of SO2 at low concentrations (i. e. less than 0.1 - 2 %-by volume), which could be used as tail gas treatment system for acid plants. While selecting an appropriate solution, special attention should be given to operating costs, which usually to a large extend depends on the type of absorption agent and the costs for disposal of the sulfur compound produced.

To build an effective entry roof beam, a roof bolting or supporting system must be of the ability of providing a clamping force to the bolted roof strata. Currently, two roof bolting systems are widely used to serve the purpose of providing such a clamping force. They are resin and mechanical anchorage bolting systems. Both numerical modeling and double shear testing results indicate that a greater pre-installed load or pretension of a roof bolting system is very critical for effective beam building. Although it?s generally accepted that a mechanical anchorage bolting system can provide a greater pretension than a resin anchorage bolting system does (Su and Poland, 2007 and Peng, 2008), no published field data are available to support such a conclusion. This paper analyzes the results of our field tests on both roof bolting systems, explains why one roof bolting system is better than the other under a typical roof condition, and finally discusses the effective means for coal mine operators to determine the best roof bolting system for their roof conditions.

Some of the, techniques of tunnelling have been adopted in horizontal headings, and in main vertical shafts, mechanical plant has displaced hand labour with notable success. However, in the field of small rises and winzes, improvements have largely been effected by attention to details of procedure. The most promising avenues for' substantial reductions in cost relate to:(a) Long-hole drilling(b) The borehole method(c) Calyx drilling.Whilst each of these methods has its peculiar advantages, the borehole rising method is probably most useful, and capable of wide application.In brief, the borehole method of rising requires a, drill hole parallel to the axis of the rise. A hoisting rope is passed through the borehole, and is attached to a platform on which the rising crew are raised with their equipment to the drilling position in the rise.When properly planned, the method is particularly safe, and has generally received the approval of mine inspectors and safety authorities. Principal component analysis of the variation of Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Mn, and Cr in a control group of 96 samples of surface ironstone from the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia, was used to derive a simple graphical method, based on only Cu, Ni, and Cr, for discriminating between massive nickel gossans and other ironstones.When the graph was tested by plotting 400 control samples, it failed to correctly classify only nine out of 176 gossans and 11 out of 224 other ironstones.

The Juneau Office of the U.S. Bureau of Mines has undertaken a study of the environmental permitting process for major mines in Alaska to identify the effects ecosystem management has had or could have on the permitting process. To date, ecosystem management affects major mine permitting in Alaska primarily through the NEPA environmental assessment process. In Alaska, only the Forest Service has instituted ecosystem management in an overt and organized manner, while other agencies are doing so less directly. In recent Bureau of Mines publications, the mine permitting process has been described using case studies of several recently permitted mines in Alaska. The insights into the permitting process and the conclusions of these reports are reviewed and summarized. Several ecosystem management issues were identified in the case studies, including the need for: effective communication between agencies; standardization and coordination of NEPA environmental impact assessment and environmental monitoring programs among agencies, and assessment and selection of alternatives based on risks to ecosystems regardless of jurisdictional boundaries or environmental media-specific regulations. Ecosystem management could be used as a way to systematize, organize, standardize, and coordinate permitting and monitoring requirements and management perspectives among government agencies and project proponents.

In spite of the increasingly polarized and politicized view of climate science and climate change in the United States, many of the principles behind the ?theory? of Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) or Global Climate Change (GCC) are in fact firmly established both in fundamental physics and detailed observations and are widely accepted elsewhere. The discovery of the earth?s ?greenhouse effect? dates back nearly 200 years to the work of French mathematician and physicist Joseph Fourier in 1824 and 1827. In 1872, John Tyndall an English physicist and mountaineer, described the capacity of various gasses to absorb radiant heat. He identified water vapor and carbon dioxide as the principal ?greenhouse? gasses. The work of Fourier and Tyndall was the foundation for the theory that increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere might be responsible for an increase in global temperatures developed by the brilliant Swedish chemist Svante August Arrhenius in 1896. This was backed up by the additional work of Gilbert Callendar in the 1930s, and Gilbert Plass, Hans Suess and Roger Revelle in the 1950s. There is little scientific dispute about the physics by which this occurs: carbon dioxide in the atmosphere absorbs long wave radiation that would otherwise escape into space, thus warming the lower atmosphere and respective temperatures worldwide. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), approximately 2500 climate scientists from around the world, has concluded that increases in carbon dioxide resulting principally from the burning of fossil fuels are responsible for most of the continuing increases in global temperatures (IPCC, 2007). NASA?s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) states; ?The ten warmest years all occur within the 12-year period 1997-2008? (GISS, 2009). 2009 was the second warmest year on record and 2010 was tied with 2005 for the warmest year on record (GISS, 2010, 2011). The science is in fact settled; the earth has not cooled since 1998 as some have claimed. It continues to warm as evidenced by not only surface temperature records but also ocean temperature records as well as changes in physical and biological systems (IPCC, 2007).

Helical pile anchors have gained acceptance over the past sixty years. Most recently they have been commonplace in the 20th century for the power utility industry in anchoring transmission towers, equipment platforms, street lighting, telephone poles, and radio tower applications. They have a strong proven industrial track record in these industries. As the cost of conventional deep pile foundations rises, the practical benefits of helical pile anchors becomes evident as a practical alternative. Noted for their uplift capacity, helical piles demonstrate equally strong compressive capacity as a structural foundation element. This paper summarizes the history, practical benefits, and technical requirements for helical piles. Significant structural testing has been completed at various universities. The practical benefits of these tests are discussed. One case example of proven performance is presented to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of helical pile anchors as suitable foundation elements.

This paper embodies the data obtained by a detailed statistical, microscopic analysis of the composite mill feed concentrate, and tailing, from the Magne and Arthur mills of the Utah Conger Co. for 1 month in 1929. It is one of a series of papers by the same authors dealing with the mineralogical characteristics of the ore and concentration products from various well-known plants. The work was done in the cooperative microscopic service laboratory at Salt Lake and represents the results of cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines, the Utah Copper Co., and the University of Utah.

Several factors contributing to the loss of fibre during treatment are a function of the paragenesis of the veins. The occurrence, of magnetite from the cap rock within the veins prevents complete fiberization. There is a marked similarity between these veins and those in the Koegas-Westerberg area of South Africa.INTRODUCTIONAn investigation of the mineralogy of the Wittenoom Gorge crocidolite veins was undertaken in the latter part of 1962 at the request of the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. Ltd. It was anticipated that such a study might reveal the cause or causes of the lack of recovery of some asbestos during beneficiation. Some interesting features of the mineralogy and paragenesis of the crocidolite veins become apparent, but it is emphasized that the investigation is far from complete, as the study did not extend to the field occurrence.The samples examined were selected from the mill and from the untreated ore.GEOLOGICAL SETTINGWittenoom Gorge is situated on the Fortescue River in the Hammersley Ranges of Western Australia and is one of several gorges in these ranges, on the sides of which 'crocidoIite asbestos is known to occur. The Hammersley, Ranges consist essentially of a series of quartzites, shales, ferruginous quartzites and dolomites. These' rocks are part of the Nullagine Formation (Proterozoic) and are usually either horizontal or gently folded. In some 'areas small beds of riebeckite as well as crocidolite are known to occur interbedded in the sequence.Riebeckite is a monoclinic amphibole, the formula of which may be stated as Na2Fe2"Fe2" (OH) 2Si8O22, and crocidolite is a fibrous variety of this mineral. The year was 1974. The event - the United States Congress was embroiled over what issues should be included in the proposed national surface mining law. The question - what should be done with underground mines? The leading bills ultimately addressed the environmental impacts associated with underground mines including provisions to protect the surface from subsidence impacts. Amid the fears that this subsidence language might discourage underground mining, sponsors of the bill were asked to explain the meaning of the provision that read "to prevent subsidence to the extent technologically and economically feasible." Was this an attempt to limit mining that caused planned and controlled subsidence? Former Deputy Director of the Office of Surface Mining, Dean Hunt, reviewed some of these historical events in a 1985 presentation before the Eastern Mineral Law Foundation. He reported that in 1974 Congressman Morris Udall took the floor to respond to these concerns expressed by other members of Congress and the industry. Mr. Hunt cited Congressman Udall's July 10, 1974 Congressional Record statement: "The House bill contemplates rules 'to prevent subsidence to the extent technologically and economically feasible.' The word prevent led to fears expressed by the Secretary of the Interior Morton, that the effect would be to outlaw longwall mining, with its obvious subsidence ... in fact the bill's sponsors consider longwall mining ecologically preferable and it and other methods of controlled subsidence are explicitly endorsed." Further, the report that accompanied the front-running bill, HR11500, provided the following clarification on the issue of subsidence prevention: "It is the intent of this section to provide the Secretary with the authority to require the design and conduct of underground mining methods to control subsidence to the extent technologically and economically feasible in order to protect the value and use of surface lands. Some of the measures available for subsidence control include: (1) leaving sufficient original mineral for support; (2) refraining from mining under certain areas---or (3) causing subsidence to occur at a predictable time and in a relatively uniform and predictable manner. This specifically allows for the uses of longwall and other mining techniques which completely remove the coal." It is clear from the preceding statements that Congress considered the removal of all the coal and causing subsidence in a predictable and uniform manner to be equal to or better than leaving support coal and causing no subsidence. While the actual provision in the bills talked of preventing subsidence, a subsequent exception made it clear that the real intent was to control it. This is evidenced in the specific planned subsidence language that appeared in the bills and ultimately in Section 516 (b) (1) of PL95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. It reads: "...adopt measures...to prevent subsidence ... except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner..." In spite of this historic record that supports controlled subsidence, something has been lost in the implementation. The primary focus by many regulators over the past few years has been on the "prevent" aspect irrespective of mining method being used. This has appeared to change the original intent of Congress from one of controlling subsidence to one of minimizing damage. The objective of this report is to review some of the current regulatory issues that impede full extraction mining and offer some suggestions on possible ways to deal with these issues.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study on the cost of mine permitting and compliance with environmental regulations in Alaska. It discusses permitting requirements and procedures for placer and lode mines. Placer miners must comply with recently established (1988) water quality regulations and effluent treatment requirements. To estimate the impact differing treatment options (no recycle, 100% recycling, and flocculation) have on a placer mine's rate of return, three models (1,500, 1,000, and 500 yd3/d) were simulated. Rates of return for these models show a marked decrease as effluent treatment is increased. The incremental increase in operating cost from one treatment option to the next is relatively small; however the opportunity cost of lost production if' significant and accounts for the decreasing rate of return with increased effluent treatment. Lode mines face greater costs for permitting and compliance than similarly sized placer mines as a result of the impact of the operation. Direct permitting costs for lode mines range from 2 to 6% of total project cost, with 4% the most common figure cited by industry. Total costs for permitting and compliance are approximately double those for permitting. Indirect costs associated with compliance include mitigation, monitoring, and reclamation.

The oxygen-rich bath smelting process of copper dross was simulated using Factsage software. It was found that the two-step simulation results agreed better with the industrial data, especially in the speiss. Bi, Pb, Sb, As, and Cu contents in the speiss by two-step simulation differed from the industrial data by 0.6 wt.%, 0.8 wt.%, 2.6 wt.%, 7.2 wt.%, and 8.6 wt.%, respectively. Twostep simulation results indicated that the speiss partitioning of Sb, As, and Cu increased from 60.1%, 32.3%, and 27.5%to 81.6%, 67.8%, and 47.2%, respectively, with the smelting temperature increasing from 1050 °C to 1250 °C. While the metal partitioning of Sb and Cu increased from 0% and 2.7% to 15.2% and 13.3%, respectively, with the separation temperature increasing from 400 °C to 700 °C.

Middle Proterozoic sulphide ore mineralisation occurs in isolated blocks of the NE-SW trending Delhi fold belt composed of Delhi Supergroup rocks. The Ajari-Basantgarh-Pipela belt forms part of the longest, widest and westernmost tectonic unit of the Delhi fold belt and consists of amphibolites, metapelites, quartzites and carbonates. The metapelite lenses and associated amphibolites host pyritic copper mineralisation. Mineralisation takes the form of sheet-like bodies consisting of ore lenses of various sizes interlayered with host or associated rocks. Massive, banded and disseminated varieties of ore are found. Pyrite is dominant with subordinate chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Pyrrhotite, galena, cubanite, mackinawite, marcasite and freibergite constitute the minor minerals. The characteristic features of the ores suggest a possible correlation with Besshi-type deposits, and the closely associated amphibolites are interpreted as low-K tholeiites of a fore-arc setting

There are circumstances where the ordinary techniques of experimental variography in geostatistics û now in common use despite their recent origin û are not quite successful. This paper describes a new addition to the geostatisticians tool kit developed by one of the renowned leaders in the field to cope specifically with these circumstances. Possible application of this technique will be outlined when it will be seen that there are still problems remaining to be solved in its use for economic evaluation of deposits with irregular mineralisation.

Lattice parameters for the wurtzite form of' CdS mere measured by powder X-ray diffraction techniques over the temperature range 26° to 1000 K'. A negative thermal -expansion coefficient was determined parallel and perpendicular to the c axis below 13.5°K. Near 808°K, the curves of the a, parameter, the differential thermal expansion, and the resistivitv vs absolute temperature exhibited a reversible discontinuity. j\. direct determination of the lattice parameters of CdS over an extended temperature range is of particular use in interpretation of the effects of high pressure on the band structure of semiconductor materials. For example, Langer' has studied the effects of pressure on the absorption edge of CdS from 77°K to room temperature. In order to properly interpret his results it is necessary to know the change in lattice constants as a function of temperature for the wurtzite, zincblende, and rocksalt2 modifications of this material. Thermal-expansion measurements for CdS, wurtzite phase, have previously been determined over a limited temperature range.s74'5 The zincblende phases, of other compounds with similar bonding, have been investigated by Novikova et a! .'' Previous thermal-expansion measurements for metals with hexagonal symmetry have for the most part used bulk sample techniques for low-temperature result. Most X-ray measurements at low temperature have been on materials with cubic symmetry.'jQ The use of X-ray powder-diffraction techniques offers a convenient and accurate method of measurement over a wide temperature range. The X-ray method, besides measuring unit cell size, also provides information about change in structure type and the nature of some of the stacking defects present. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thermal expansion was measured by X-ray powder-diffraction techniques. Lattice parameters for the range 300" to 1000°K were determined in a 19-cm Unicam camera. From 26" to 300°K a 34-cm back-reflection camera with the Van Arkel" film arrangement was used. The sample was bonded to a copper cold finger below a helium, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, dry ice, or ice brine bath in a metal cryistat. che inner bath was surrounded by another one for radiation shielding. Nitrogen was used in this outer bath for the very low-temperature runs while dry ice and acetone was used for the 195°K point. CuKa X-rays, filtered with a nickel foil, entered the cryostat through a 0.001-in.-thick aluminum window. During a typical 9-hr exposure the sample was continuously rotated through a 30-deg arc. Heat losses from the sample holder limited the minimum temperature attained to 26°K with helium in the inner dewar. Temperature calibration between 25" and 125°K was determined with an Allen Bradley 300-ohm carbon resistor. The resistor was attached to the back of the copper finger with a thin layer of silicone grease. Liquid He, HZ, N2, and O2 baths were used to calibrate the resistor. Temperature variation is estimated to be *2"K with a slightly higher uncertainty at room temperature and 264°K. The thermal expansion of high-purity germanium from 373" to 900°K was measured as a calibration for the Unicam camera. This value was compared with the known value1' for the thermal expansion. A discontinuity in the thermal-expansion coefficient of the CdS a, parameter was observed. Similar discontinuities in the resistivity and differential thermal analysis at the same absolute temperature indicate that the temperature error is *5°K in the temperature range above 500°K. Temperature errors in the Unicam camera below 500°K are appreciably higher due to large gradients in the resistance furnace. II) SAMPLE PREPARATION The CdS was Eagle Picher ultrapure grade. In all the industries that require blasting operations using explosives, there exists numerous unwanted side effects of the blast which may pose as environmental hazards. These hazards face prominence, especially in India, where there are very stringent rules and regulations governing the use of explosives. The environmental hazards associated with blasting operations as a whole can be tacked successfully to a certain extent depending upon the ultimate expectations of ,the post-blast effects and the limitations of the environmental obligations as specified by the authorities from time to time and from place to place. The main parameters which require attention to limit the post-blast results to the optimum level are ground vibrations, dust pollution, gas pollution, air blast effects, noise pollution & fly rocks etc.

The research objective was to determine the effect of aluminum alloy additions on the oxidation behavior of cobalt-nickel alloys. Thirty high-purity alloys were reacted with 02 at 0.5 atm at 1,351°, 1,389°, and 1,429° K in a volumetric apparatus for about 300 min. The alloy compositions consisted of Co-Ni master alloys (0, 22, 50, 70, 91, and 100 wt pct Ni) with aluminum additions of about 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 wt pet. Large early deviations from, or changes in, the parabolic rate constant were encountered, but in most cases, the reaction rate declined approximately in accordance with the parabolic rate law. A sharp peak in the parabolic oxidation rate constant was observed for specimens containing a to 22 percent nickel and 1 to 2 percent aluminum at 1,351° K, and the rate constants for these compositions were lower at the higher temperatures. Specimens containing 8 percent aluminum reacted far more slowly than did any of the others.

A shortage of technical skills in all areas of the mining industry is being experienced worldwide. This has significant consequences for design, operations, productivity and safety and, therefore, needs to be seriously addressed, both in the short and longer term. It is therefore both a strategic and a tactical issue. Importantly, however, since mining is a long-term business, the shortage of skills must be dealt with from a strategic point of view to ensure the supply of the necessary skills for future mining. This paper will deal specifically with the provision of high level technical skills, that is, university graduates in mining engineering, and the outlook for the institutions that are currently producing such graduates.

Mining at Vale’s Creighton Mine has been active for nearly 120 years in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Being the deepest mine in the Sudbury region, mining induced seismicity is a common occurrence at Creighton Mine. Over the past five years, 26 large magnitude seismic events ranging from 2.5 Mn to 3.7 Mn (Nuttli) have occurred. Out of these large magnitude events, three 3.0+ Mn events occurred between April 2020 and January 2021. The majority of the 3.0+ Mn events are believed to be the fault-slip type that could be linked to the known major geological structures and/or long-term effect of mining over many years. The recent large magnitude events are believed to be triggered by high induced stresses while mining the first few stopes of a new lower horizon in the top-down centre out mining sequence.

DOMESTIC production of carbon black increased 4 percent in 1962 to 2,056 million pounds. Furnace black output was 8 percent, or 132 million pounds, above that in 1961 and accounted for 90 percent of total carbon black production. Channel black output continued to decline and was 55 million pounds less than in 1961. Carbon black shipments during the year totaled 2,082 million pounds and were 5 percent above those of 1961. About one-fifth of these shipments were exported; the balance were sold domestically. An increase of 180 million pounds in domestic sales was partially offset by a decline of 80 million pounds in exports. Total value of carbon black production in 1962 was $145 million. The average value per pound of 7.06 cents was 0.24 cent per pound less than in 1961. Producers' stocks declined 26 million pounds during the year.
