The Laurentian University Virtual Reality Laboratory (VRL) has provided a unique platform for the development and testing of novel seismic and microseismic data processing and visualization technology. In collaboration with Vale?s Creighton Mine, the technology was implemented at the mine site and consists of a VRL system and site calibrated Seismic Excavation Hazard Map (SEHM) software. The SEHM was developed as a practical solution for the mine operator to identify areas of elevated, active rock mass damage processes caused by recent mining activity. This paper is a pictorial representation of the 3D stereoscopic demonstration of the Creighton Mine seismic data distribution and interpreted SEHM for the first quarter of 2009. A live demonstration is scheduled at the Laurentian University VRL as one of the conference field trips. The demonstration highlights the technology transfer of research concepts into a near-real-time excavation hazard system that utilizes the key aspects of virtual reality technology; the ability to integrate large datasets (geology, mine excavation, (seismic) monitoring data, production scheduling, stress model, etc.); the ability to manipulate and visualize large datasets in both space and in time (mining sequence); and the ability to review the datasets by a group of experts in an immersive (3D stereoscopic), collaborative environment to better understand the processes and context of the mining-induced seismicity and evaluate potential risks to the mining operation.

The effectiveness of an industry's safety activities can be gaged best by the accident records of that industry. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information.3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and "service? contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. STATISTICAL data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines and to their mills, and/or processing plants are presented in this Information Circular for the calendar year 1960. The information pertains to metal mines, as well as ore-dressing plants and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries and reduction plants, and their auxiliary works. These data are voluntarily submitted annually to the Bureau of Mines by the operators, and contribute greatly toward the promotion of safety in the mineral industries. The data presented are classified according to the principal mineral produced and include information on copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, gold placer, uranium-vanadium and miscellaneous metals. A breakdown of miscellaneous metals by commodities is shown in table 19, page 41. The data also relate to workers engaged in production, exploration, development, construction, and maintenance and repair work, as well as supervisory personnel and office-workers at the mine or plant site. In this study, a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) and following acid leaching techniques were carried out to produce boron carbide (B4C) powder. First, B2O3 was obtained through calcinations of H3BO3 at 1073 K for 2 hours. Then, the glassy B2O3 obtained was crushed and sieved. In the SHS experiments, different amounts of B2O3, Mg and C black were used. The SHS product was obtained in the form of black, spongy solid. In the leaching step, the SHS product was leached in a HCl solution to eliminate the MgO and Mg3B2O6. The effect of acid concentration on the selective leaching was studied at different concentration range, solid/liquid (S/L) ratio, and temperature. The products obtained were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis and SEM techniques.

A table concentrate obtained experimentally by the New Occidental Gold Mines N.L. has unusual interest on account of the presence in it of abundant coated or "black" gold. The concentrate was obtained from ore from the New Cobar mine, Cobar, New South Wales, by feeding the oversize product from a "Dorr Bowl classifier to a Card table.Its assay value was 129 oz. of gold and 52 oz. of silver per ton, yet practically no free gold could be seen on panning.When, however, the concentrate was digested in hydrochloric acid fine rusty gold could be obtained by panning.The following chemical analysis was carried out by the mining company on a similar sample of concentrate.

The application of biogeochemical methods in mineral exploration in semi-arid to arid environments in Western Australia has been investigated in an area near Norseman.The study involved a comparison of trace element characteristics of rock, soil and plants in the vicinity of the Pioneer BB prospect, where nickel-iron sulphide mineralization occurs in a "greenstone" sequence of ultrabasic, basic and sedimentary rocks.Analyses of unweathered and partly weathered rock from diamond drill cores show the ultrabasic rock to be highly variable with respect to Ni, Cu, Co, Zn and Mn.Samples of weathered bedrock and overlying soil were analysed for total trace element contents and for the trace elements associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides. Approximately 30 per cent of the total nickel content of the weathered basic rock is associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides, compared with approximately 15 per cent in the weathered ultrabasic rock.The soil has a sufficient residual content to provide a reliable indication of the chemistry of the underlying rock. Total trace element analyses of the -89 mesh fraction show strong anomalies for nickel and copper over the mineralized zone. Important amounts of nickel, cobalt and, to a lesser extent, copper are apparently associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides in the soil.Melaleuca sheathiana (tea tree) has been used to study the relationship between soil and plant chemistry. No strong relationship between plant and rock type was observed. Analyses were made of leaves, twigs, wood, bark and roots, and all plant organs were found to have anomalous nickel and copper contents near the mineralized zone. Leaves were found to give the best contrast in the anomalous area and to show fewer erratic values than other organs. It is concluded that the uptake of trace elements by tea tree is low in the semi-arid to arid environment of Western Australia, but that analyses of the plants do reflect the presence of mineralization.

Eleven workshops were held in various locations throughout the country in an attempt to reach the many diverse groups working in various mineral commodity areas and special ties. These meetings were held between March 1, 1974 and June 25, 1975. They were held under the auspices of the Bureau of Mines Contract to the University of Missouri-Rolla which was designed to help define Bureau research and development priorities. At each workshop a summary of current Bureau research and development was presented and the attendees were asked to present their ideas on what Research and Development programs should be undertaken to meet their needs locally. Participants included representatives of federal and state agencies, educational institutions, mining companies, equipment companies and other interested parties. The workshops covered under this report include lead mining in Missouri, limestone mining, coal mining both surface and underground in the midwest and in the Rocky Mountain area, iron mining in Minnesota, two top management meetings on institutional problems and, finally, a special two-day meeting on roof control.

The Bureau of Mines found the chemical and galvanic corrosion behavior of the TZM and molybdenum-30 tungsten alloys to be generally equal or superior to that of unalloyed molybdenum in many aqueous solutions of acids, bases, and salts. Notable exceptions occurred in 1 [N] nitric acid, where both alloys corroded appreciably faster than molybdenum. In mercuric chloride solutions, the TZM alloy was susceptible to a type of crevice corrosion which was not due to differential aeration. The alloys were usually not adversely affected by con-tact with dissimilar metals in galvanic couple experiments, but the dissimilar metals sometimes corroded galvanically. Both alloys were resistant to substitute ocean water spray at 60° C.

The ADS system was developed to reduce accidents related to haul trucks operating under low visibility conditions in surface mining and construction sites, which is based on the GPS, mesh-wireless networks, and the Google-Earth 3D graphic engine as the graphic interface and mine-mapping server. This system has the capability to pin-point and track vehicles in real time using a 3D interface, which is based on user-based AutoCAD mine maps using the Google-Earth graphics interface. All equipped vehicles are shown in a 3D mine map stored in a local server through a wireless network. When low visibility conditions are present, the system indicates available exit/escape routes for driver safety. The research results indicate that the ADS system potentially increases reliability and reduces uncertainty in open pit mining operations by customizing the local 3D digital mining map, constructing the truck 3D models, tracking vehicles in real time using a 3D interface and indicating available escape routes for driver safety.

One of a series published by the Bureau of Mines covering research investigations in rock drillability, this report of field drilling results extends earlier laboratory findings and provides a relatively simple procedure for predicting percussive drilling rates with reasonable accuracy. Two percussive drills mounted on a truck were used to drill a total of 25 rock types, and the results were used to develop a prediction equation. The equation was tested on a set of unrelated laboratory percussive drilling data, and the comparison between predicted and actual rates is shown in tabular form.

A wide variety of techniques and equipment are available for coring soft or poorly consolidated geological material. This report presents a comprehensive literature review and evaluation of these techniques and equipment. A potential user will find guidelines in this report to assist him in selecting sampling equipment. A bar chart shows what samplers have been used under what geological conditions, and gives the specific literature references. Two matrices rate the present techniques and equipment with respect to reported success for sampling specific materials, and with respect to several performance characteristics including complexity of use and core quality. These matrices are supplemented with tables of typical sampling equipment. and program costs. Near-term future developments are seen primarily in improved training of drillers, and in instrumenting the drilling operation to provide objective data on drilling characteristics. An extensive annotated bibliography, a catalogue of equipment suppliers including specifications and cost ranges, and a list of manufacturers and distributors are appended to the report.

THE following really forms the second part of, or a sequel to, a paper, " Ventilating Metalliferous Mines: a Method of Attack," read before the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in May, 1920. In that paper the writer advocated a consideration of the question of ventilation in metal mines from a different aspect to that 'which had hitherto prevailed locally. Various factors regarded as having an important bearing on the subject were set forth, together with the results of observations made during ventilation tests carried out at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation.During the subsequent discussion the question was raised of the possibility of any practical application of the method of attack described, and also whether the theoretical considerations mentioned were likely to be of any real utility to the mining engineer engaged in ventilation work in a metalliferous mine.

"I had been requested earlier this year by MetSoc, our sister society of CIM, to contribute a chapter on technical developments in Canadian mineral processing over the past 50 years to their 50th Anniversary volume. Accepting the challenge of assembling such a chapter seemed at first a reasonably straightforward task, until one realises that the list of contributions by Canadians to mineral processing over this period has been more than just significant. It turns out to have been an extraordinarily fertile time for innovation and impact for Canadian-based technology. The list is necessarily a subjective one, however I had no trouble identifying twenty technology developments that are clearly outstanding, and there are undoubtedly others. As much as possible, I approached the individuals themselves who played key roles in each technology and asked that they tell the “story”. Without exception, all who were invited accepted eagerly and delivered more than I had hoped for. The technologies have been grouped into those that are truly Canadian innovations, such as the Knelson gravity concentrator and the McGill gas dispersion sensors in flotation, and technologies where Canadians and Canada played a very significant role in their success and implementation, such as AG/SAG grinding and ion-beam surface analysis. Also included are what may be termed technology transfer initiatives and institutions that have risen to a world class level, such as SGS Lakefield and the Canadian Mineral Processors Society of CIM. The challenge is now for the coming generation to continue this record of innovation and contribution to the industry, and that includes the (mostly) Canadian mining and metallurgical companies who have taken the longer term view and supported many of these initiatives, through their critical early years, with both financing and project sites for these ideas. Let us hope that the current trend of mining company globalization will not dampen their enthusiasm to participate. This plenary presentation will highlight many of these technologies, the individuals behind them, and their significance to the mineral processing industry."

SEVERAL years ago, I estimated the total stock of gold in the world to be about a thousand million ounces, of which rather over one-third was available for monetary uses. Robert H. Ridgway has estimated the world's production from 1493 to 1927 as slightly over this amount. Of this total, 1.5 per cent was produced between 1493 and 1850 (before the Californian and Australian goldfields began to flood the world with gold), 331/2 per cent from 1851 to 1900, and 511/2 per cent from 1900 to 1927. Allowing for loss by attrition and permanent consumption in the arts, and for loss of buried treas¬ure, my first-mentioned estimate is perhaps not far from the truth; but my estimate of the monetary stock was certainly too low. Of the total production stated by Rid-way. 28 per cent came from North America. 26.9 per cent from Africa, 1.6.8 per cent from Australasia, 12.4 per cent from South America, and 11.2 per cent from Asia. Excepting that from the African conglomerate beds, the ultimate origin of which is still the subject of controversy, by far the greater part of the total production was derived from alluvials. Weighing all contingencies, it is improbable that any such production as has been made during the last forty years will be repeated in any similar period, if the present price level is maintained. The gold standard today seems firmly established except for temporary digressions. Nevertheless, no well-informed mining engineer will venture to assert the probability that the material for its maintenance throughout future generations can be furnished.

Borates are essential to life, and to many products that are essential to an acceptable standard of living. They occur naturally in seawater at an average concentration of five milligrams of boron per liter. Fresh water lakes, rivers, streams and ground water generally have concentrations of about one milligram boron per liter. Borates are also present in soil at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to three milligrams of boron per kilogram. Because most of that boron is locked into insoluble minerals, clay or organic matter, boron deficiency is more widespread than boron enrichment. Borates evaporate into the atmosphere from seawater, rain, snow and hot springs. In rain and snow, natural boron concentrations range from 0.002 and 0.1 milligrams boron per liter. All told, boron moves through the atmosphere at a rate of 5 Mt to 7 Mt/a (5.5 million to 7.7 million stpy).

"The Buffalo gold deposit is a small deposit consisting of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins within a granodiorite stock in the Red Lake greenstone belt. This study aims to characterize the mineralizing fluids through fluid inclusion and stable isotope analyses and to compare them with those of the world-class Campbell- Red Lake deposit. Four types of fluid inclusions were recognized, including carbonic, aqueous-carbonic, aqueous, and halite-bearing aqueous, with the carbonic type being the most abundant. Raman analyses indicate that the carbonic phase mainly consists of CO2, with minor amounts of N2 and CH4, and rarely detectable H2S. The homogenization temperatures of the carbonic inclusions range from -41.7° to 30.9°C. The homogenization temperatures and salinities of the aqueous, halite-bearing aqueous, and aqueous-carbonic inclusions are 130° to 276°C and 9.7 to 23.6 wt.% NaCl equiv., 155° to 207°C and 32.9 to 42.3 wt.% NaCl equiv., and 215° to 357°C and 8.3 to 19.7 wt.% NaCl equiv., respectively. The d18OVSMOW values of tourmaline range from 8.2‰ to 9.0‰, and those of quartz from 11.4‰ to 11.9‰, with estimated fluid temperatures from 323° to 399°C based on the quartz-tourmaline isotopic geothermometer. It is postulated that separate CO2-dominated and aqueous fluids intermittently invaded the fracture/vein system in response to fluid pressure fluctuations, with limited mixing. The CO2-dominated fluid, previously recognized in Campbell-Red Lake as the main mineralizing fluid, is inferred to have been derived from deeper parts of the crust. This deep CO2-dominated fluid reservoir might have been a common source for gold mineralization in the Red Lake greenstone belt. Quatre types d’inclusions ont été notes, incluant des inclusions carboniques, aqueuses-carboniques, aqueuses et aqueuses avec halite, les inclusions carboniques étant la variété la plus abondante.
