South Africa had a late start with rapid prototyping (RP), with the first system being available in 1991. Up to 1994 only three systems were available in SA. Through active research participation from the CSIR and a number of universities, supported by technology transfer programmes and industry awareness workshops, adoption of RP technologies started to grow. Internationally, RP grew to the extent that several country-based member organizations were formed, and an initiation meeting of the Global Alliance of RP Associations (GARPA) took place during the SME Rapid Conference in Dearborn, USA in 1998. South Africa (SA) was invited under the auspices of the Time Compression Technologies Centre (TCTC) launched by the CSIR, and received an invitation to become a member of GARPA through the launch of a national, inclusive organization. The latter gave rise to a RAPDASA planning/launch meeting held at the University of Stellenbosch, which culminated in the first RAPDASA international conference held in November 2000 at the CSIR, and the election of a first RAPDASA management committee, also at the 1st AGM held during the conference. RAPDASA has been a pillar of strength since then, with an annual international conference being presented. As South Africa?s RP awareness grew through the RAPDASA and independent activities, so did the availability of RP platforms in SA.SA also became a benchmark for other countries/late adopters to follow, as slowly a position of following became a position of leading through innovative applications. The paper highlights SA?s development approach and history, together with the discussion of case studies in various fields. Contribution to the light metals industry will also be discussed. Performing risk analyses on tunnel projects has become common place and on many projects it is required from an owner or regulatory perspective. After the project is planned, designed and constructed, the data concerning identified risks, assumptions, costs, probabilities and mitigations is generally long forgotten and buried in some file somewhere. A study was performed comparing predicted risks versus actual events on several recently constructed tunnel projects. Probabilities and costs for selectively common risks on tunnel projects have been studied and re-evaluated. Conclusions are presented that can guide future projects and the veracity of the tunnel risk analyses performed.

This report describes the initial phase of Bureau of Mines research in the hydraulic mining of bituminous coal. The mining site and equipment are described, and the test procedures and results obtained with a bar-mounted monitor are given. Tests showed that hard Pittsburgh-bed coal can be mined hydraulically from a solid face at water pressures of 4,000 pounds per square inch.4 Coal was penetrated to a depth of 4 feet in 20 seconds with 225 gallons of water per minute coming from a 3/8-inch nozzle at 4,000 pounds per square inch pressure. Some difficulty was encountered in cutting the binders occurring in the coal; it was not possible Lu penetrate directly the overlying draw slate.

A range of supported gold catalysts was prepared by ion exchange, varying many of the preparation variables, including concentration in the precursor solution, washing procedure, as well as drying and calcination procedures. These catalysts have been characterized extensively. TEM images show essentially the same crystallite size distributions, between 2?5 nm, for almost all catalysts, the only exception being catalysts not washed in ammonia, which did not show any small crystallites. Additional characterization with SEM yielded an interesting discovery. Catalysts that appear identical on the TEM also contain some large crystallites in the range of 50?500 nm. Differences in dispersion due to the drying procedure not seen on the TEM can now be observed. Oxygen chemisorption is being investigated as an additional method to characterize gold based catalysts to complement the typically used electron microscope techniques.

Due to the difficulties of ventilating large opening stone mines, the effective dilution of diesel particulate matter and noxious gases has often been problematic. Since stone mines have large openings that develop low air resistances, and propeller fans are designed for low pressure-high volume applications, main mine propeller fans may be a feasible option for ventilating underground stone mines. This paper describes the results of a case study where researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have demonstrated that significant increases in total mine airflow can be achieved and the ventilation improved in a large-opening stone mine by replacing an axial-vane mine fan with two 12-ft diameter propeller fans and adding a line of stoppings. In this study, the use of the propeller fans more than doubled the air quantity from 300,000 cfm to 750,000 cfm, while operating at 50 horsepower less than the original axial-vane fan.

Implementation of the joint Federal-State control program established in 1955 to cope with the mine water problem in the Pennsylvania anthracite region is described in this report. The increasing severity of the water problem in the anthracite mines has necessitated major adjustments as this continuing program has progressed. Since 1941 the Federal Government has recognized the mine water problem as an important factor in the worsening economic condition of the anthracite region by initiating scientific and technologic investigations and establishing the Anthracite Flood-Prevention Section in the Bureau of Mines in 1948. On the basis of comprehensive investigations and studies, the results of which were published in numerous reports and bulletins, the Anthracite Mine Drainage Commission of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania formulated a plan that served as a background for legislative action in 1955, resulting in Public Law 162, 84th Congress (Act of July 15, 1955 (69 Stat. 352; 30 U.S.C. 571-576)), for the Federal Government, and Act No. 82 of the General Assembly, July 7, 1955, for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The report covers 29 mine flood control projects approved and executed in implementing the aforementioned legislative acts. Essential engineering and cost details for each project are given, together with an evaluation of the effect that the installed facilities have on alleviating the mine water problem as it concerns individual mines and the anthracite industry as a whole.

The ore is very 'refractory. It consists essentially of arsenical pyrites, iron pyrites, zinc blende, galena, antimony as sulphide and probably, in combination with galena, as Jamesonite, magnesium, and aluminium silicates with quartz. Some of the oxidized ore, of which there is very little, has a very interesting composition. A specimen shown to me by the ,general.manager, Mr. F. B. Stephens, consisted of hydrated arseniate of iron, orpiment, pyromorphite, lead oxide, with magnesium silicates and quartz. The ore found in the mine with a composition similar to this specimen was valued for gold contents at 60 oz. per ton. This ore is found as a small leader, which runs parallel to the main ore body, at intervals cutting through it.The ore is conveyed from the mine to the reduction works by means of a double road tram line. The mine is situated about rooo feet above the plant on a hill. The grade is so great (about I in 2) that the loaded trucks coming down are able to pullthe empty ones up, thus obviating the necessity of motive power for haulage. All that is necessary is two large grooved pulleys, fixed at the summit of the hilI, and provided with a rope-break for steadying the speed of the trucks down the hilI.

The study refers to an area of about 70 km2, extended in the Italian Central Alps along the the San Giacomo Valley where different civil and mining works are present The regional geological setting is related to the Pennidic Nappe arrangement, characterized by the emplacement of sub-horizontal gneissic bodies resulting from the Mesoalpine isoclinalic folding of crystalline basements, emplaced throw East, and separated by matasedimentary cover units. The investigated geological rocks, belong to the ?Tambò?Unit, overlapped by its meta-sedimentary cover and by the ?Suretta? Unit. The tectonic contact gently dips to the E?NE. The valley, furrowed by the Liro Torrent, follows a N?S striking tectonic lineament, almost parallel to the nappe contact. A number of more then 70 sites, distributed in the studied area, were chosen and detailed structural and geomechanical field surveys were performed to characterize the rock masses, its intact rock and discontinuities. The procedure identifies the number of joint sets, their representative orientation, the set spacing, the type of movement, the amount of dilatation, the degree of alteration, the roughness coefficient, the presence and nature of infill. Rock mass quality indexes, such as the Rock Mass Rating (Bieniawski, 1989) or the Geological Strength Index (Hoek et al. 2002) have been evaluated in each surveyed site. The work is a contribute in assessing how the geometrical and geomechanical properties of the rock masses can be regarded as regionalized variables. The spatial distribution of these properties is a function of the geological and structural phenomena at which the rock masses have been subjected. The presented geostatistical analysis regards the spatial variation of the orientation of the most representative joint set.

The investigations carried on at the fuel-testing plant of the United States Geological Survey at St. Louis in 1904-1907 included tests of the steaming and gas-producing qualities of many coals and of the possibilif3 of their improvement by briquetting, together with washing and coking tests and tests of some of the resulting coke in the cupola. These tests were part of a general inquiry into the manner of utilizing most efficiently each of the coals under investigation. The equipment used in the cupola tests of coke, the manner of conducting the tests, and the essential results have been described in publications of the Geological Survey," and only the more important conclusions to be drawn from the tests are mentioned in the following pages. The tests were made to show the fitness of the cokes for foundry purposes, but an incidentlll result was to show foundry men and the coke producers the advisability of studying the conditions of foundry practice. The present bulletin, published by the Bureau of Mines because the analyzing and testing of fuels have been transferred from the Gilological Survey to the Bureau of Mines, briefly reviews the status of the coke industry, some features of practice in the use of coke in the foundry, the probable happenings of a cupola heat, and the reasons for modifying charging practice so that a particular coke can be used to best advantage.

INJURY experience and employment data at all metal mines in the United States and Alaska are presented in this Information Circular for the calendar year 1958. This publication covers the metal mining industries, and contains statistical data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines, ore-dressing plants, and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants. These operations report injury and employment information annually to the Bureau of Mines on a voluntary basis. The Bureau is authorized to make requests for such data, and the information submitted contributes immeasurably to the promotion of safety in the metal mining industry. Every effort has been made to make the annual canvass as complete as possible. This publication contains, along with production and development workers, the office employees at the mine location. The metal mines identified in this publication are classified according to the mineral ores mined; that is, copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, gold placer, and miscellaneous metals.

The Allen Park Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Tunnel and relief sewer project, located in the city of Allen Park, MI, is a long-term corrective action designed to bring Sanitary District One?s sanitary system into compliance with its 2005 consent order and service contract with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD). The $20 million project is intended to reduce Allen Park?s wet weather discharges to DWSD, reduce bypass pumping to the Ecorse Creek and limit the future risk of basement flooding by providing storage during wet weather events and eliminating hydraulic bottlenecks in the sanitary sewer system.

The ore extraction rate and the incorporation of new areas are key operational parameters. In massive deposits mined by caving techniques they both control the cave back geometry, which is mostly responsible for the induced stress state around productive levels. Early detection of deviations from admissible geometries will prevent stability problems related to geomechanical hazards, helping to improve safety and working conditions and reduce the potential for lost reserves.This paper describes a mine planning tool currently in use at the El Teniente mine. This tool involves the control of the cave geometry based on rules that have been defined as a result of different studies and experience collected during the operational history of the mine.This mine planning strategy achieves an extractive mining process with lower risk than conventional planning methods, ensuring ore reserves extraction if followed as planned while reducing unexpected changes in mining sequences.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Pinochet, A and Caviedes, C, 2016. The Zarafshan/Newmont Joint Venture operates the Muruntau heap leach project, located in the Kyzylkum desert of central Uzbekistan. The mine produces more than 12.4 t/a (400,000 oz/year) of gold from low-grade oxide ore stockpiles adjacent to the Muruntau open pit. It is op¬erated by the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combine and is one of the largest gold resources known (Fig. 1). Since commissioning in 1995, total heap leach production has exceeded 21 t (675,000 oz). The joint venture uses four-stage crushing and screening to produce a final product for heap leaching, Merrill-Crowe processing and local refining.

The National Safety Competition was inaugurated in 1925 by the Bureau o1 Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation With the Explosives Engineer. In the first nationwide contest, 210 mines and quarries were enrolled. In 1962, the thirty-eighth anniversary of the competition, 910 mines and quarries were enrolled. These participating plants were worked a total of 133,292,989 man-hours. Of the enrolled plants, 415 achieved injury-free operations tar the year, the largest number of perfect safety records in the history of the contest. In 1961 and 1962, the National Safety Competition was conducted and sponsored by the Bureau of Mines. In January 1963, the American Mining Congress became a cosponsor and participated with the Bureau in the award activities related to the 1962 contest. The basic purpose of the competition is to stimulate employees to work safely and too give impetus to the building of better accident-prevention programs. A well-designed and efficient safety program helps a company economically by cutting costs, preventing damage to equipment and materials, and reducing nonproductive delays. An effective safety program benefits the employee more directly because his injuries cause personal suffering, lost time, and lower living standards for his family. Since both have much to gain, management and workers should cooperate closely to eliminate disabling work injuries. The greater contest participation and the larger number of perfect safety records indicate increasing safety consciousness on the part of management and employees.

The observation of lower-than-predicted Fe/Cu ratios in the cementation of copper on iron in tests at elevated temperatures indicated that some other reaction was contributing to the reduction of cupric sulphate in addition to the reduction by elemental iron. Experiments showed that the copper sponge, which initially formed on the iron, subsequently reduced the cupric sulphate giving the products cuprous oxide and sulphuric acid.Tests were undertaken to determine the rate and equilibrium conditions of the reduction reaction with variations in the types of the reducing agent and solution parameters. The reaction first became apparent at temperatures above 50°C and as it ceased at pH 1·8 it was possible to induce further reaction by alkali addition.
