The economics of a mineral processing circuit is dependent on the numerous sensors that are critical to optimization and control systems. The sheer volume of sensors results in mines not being able to keep the sensors calibrated. When a sensor goes off calibration, it results in errors which can severely impact plant economics. Normally, these errors are not detected until the error grows and becomes a large (“gross”) error. Undetected errors are not remedied until the next calibration, which on average are a year apart Beamex (2019) [1] across all industries. Classical statistical methods that depend on linear relationships between input and response variables are typically used to find gross errors, but are not effective for highly non-linear and non-stationary operations in mining and mineral processing industries. Calibration of sensors is time-consuming and generally requires physical intervention that results in equipment downtimes causing production losses. Therefore, in situ detection methods are warranted that do not require physical removal of sensors to compare with standard measurements or well-calibrated sensors. Data-mining based techniques and algorithms have high success rate in tackling such problems. This paper presents results from a groundbreaking multi-year big data research project whose goal was to develop data-mining-based original techniques in a multi-sensor environment to identify when sensors start to stray, rather than wait for errors to grow. The carbon stripping (gold) circuit in the Pogo Mine of Alaska was selected for this project. Maintaining strip vessel temperatures at optimum levels is crucial for maximizing gold recoveries at Pogo, and hence the focus was on the temperature sensors of the two strip vessels. An automated algorithm to detect errors in strip vessel temperature sensors was developed that exploited data from multiple sensors in the strip circuit. This algorithm was able to detect with a high success rate when bias errors of magnitude as low as ± 2% were artificially induced into strip vessel temperature data streams. The detection times of about 1 month were much less than the industry average calibration frequency of 1 year. Thus, the algorithm helps detect errors early, without stopping the circuit. The algorithm alarms can serve as triggers when calibrations are done. Experimental methodology along with results, limitations of algorithms, and future research are also presented in this paper.

The potassium mineral polyhalite (K2SO4.MgSO4.2CaSO4.2H20) found in large deposits in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico is associated with varying amounts of halite (sodium chloride, NaCl) and anhydrite (calcium sulphate, CaSO4). Although the anhydrite, because of its low solubility and slow rate of solution, is relatively inert, the halite is dissolved immediately in any process solution with which the polyhalite comes in contact. Limited quantities of sodium chloride in the liquors used for the hot extraction of polyhalite materially improve the results obtained,4 but only a very small sodium chloride content may be desired in the entering polyhalite in other procedures, such as Bureau of Mines process 75. In. all of the processes suggested for the recovery of potassium sulphate from polyhalite the control of the sodium chloride content will be desirable, if not absolutely essential to efficient operation. OCCURRENCE OF HALITE IN POLYHALITE A preliminary estimate of the amount of halite associated with typical deposits of polyhalite may be derived from drill cores, although it should be remembered that only 50 or 60 core tests have been made in the many hundreds of square miles of the Permian basin. From a mineralogical study of 41 of these cores, Schaller and Henderson6 state: In many of the sections of core that seem when viewed by the unaided eye to consist essentially of polyhalite, both halite and anhydrite are present in greatly varying quantities - with very minor quantities of clay and magnesite.

Appendix A is an abridged extract of the report prepared by the Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Society of Idaho, and presents the results of their one-year study to evaluate the feasibility of disposing mill tailings by landfill construction. Appendix B describes the field and laboratory testing program completed by RDM to assess the effectiveness of a soil (slimes) liner as a means of seepage control to reduce the introduction of contaminants into the local ground water regime. Appendix C presents a summary of a thesis by Lawrence Martin on the analysis of the acid production potential of mill tailings, and the results of geotechnical testing of mill tailings completed by ROM. Appendix D describes potential landfill sites identified within the study area, the development of these sites to meet the present needs of the mining industry and the future requirements of the community is described. Appendix E summarizes the main legislation impacting on tailings disposal. Appendix F discusses the environmental and socio-economic factors that should be considered.

Since 1988, there have been thirteen documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through near surface strata into structures or other enclosed spaces as a result of nearby trench blasting or surface mine blasting. From these incidents, there are thirty suspected or medically verified CO poisonings and one fatality associated with these incidents. To better understand the variables contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out a small- scale field study to identify key factors that may contribute to the migration of CO through the ground. NIOSH conducted single- hole heavily confined experimental test shots to measure the radial pressure pulse as it propagated through surrounding monitoring holes to determine if a relationship existed between the pressure pulse and resulting CO measurements afterwards. NIOSH also monitored blasts at an airport construction site. Following the detonations, the concentrations of CO, nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were monitored for several days in the surrounding satellite holes. The peak CO measurements relative to distances from the shots were compared. Pressure histories and peak particle velocities (PPV) were measured at monitoring boreholes. It was found that the differential pressures recorded within the boreholes give some indication as to the likelihood of CO appearing, whereas the PPV measurements do not seem to be as good an indicator for potential CO migration. In this limited study, changes in barometric pressure had very little influence on removing the trapped detonation products, whereas applying a vacuum to the monitoring holes was effective in reducing the entrapped CO concentration.

This paper presents the wall stabilization design and implementation for a 541 linear ft masonry and concrete gravity-type retaining wall flanking the west perimeter of a 7.37 acre parcel in Bronx, New York. This paper will discuss the results of static and dynamic stability analyses performed for the pre- and post excavation phases for the proposed 300 ft wide open-cut of up to 14 ft of contaminated soil below the toe of the retaining wall. The wall stabilization consisted of over 74 inclined drilled and grouted anchor dowels, and 55 tiebacks drilled and grouted to the underlying mica schist bedrock. Three over-lapping rows of jet grout columns were chosen as the foundation solution for the existing retaining wall. This paper focuses on the design, construction and performance of the jet grout curtain wall. The jet grout wall served three purposes: 1) underpinning and excavation support for the removal of contaminated site soils, 2) permanent hydraulic barrier, and 3) resistance against a deep seated failure within the thick clay layer present at the site. The originally designed jet grout wall had unexpected negative effects to the existing retaining wall. The jet grouting program was modified while the Observational Method (Peck 1969) was employed to keep wall movements to a minimum. This paper discusses the diagnostic methods used to determine the cause of retaining wall movement; the implementation of a remedial ground improvement program; the modification to the jet grout installation procedure; and the ultimate performance of the jet grout wall.

"This paper summarizes research into the study of the control of flotation processes based on froth images. The use of numerical image analysis techniques for the extraction of significant patterns (froth structure and colour) from industrial flotation froths is discussed.First, the froth was analysed by the use of the Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) method to extract the spectral variation contained in a RBG image. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) was applied to develop the empirical model for the prediction of froth grade. The results of this application are illustrated using one industrial case study.Second, the froth was also analysed by Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Wavelet Transform Analysis (WTA) to extract features related more to morphological aspects. Since there is useful information hidden in froth texture, these methods are used as texture descriptor to classify different types of froths.Third, a control strategy based on a froth structure indicator was developed and implemented on an industrial zinc flotation circuit. The feedback controller uses a reagent flow-rate in order to maintain the froth structure at its set point. Process improvements obtained with the implemented control strategy are highlighted.Finally, the feasibility to implement a hybrid control strategy consisting in a froth structure supervision controller based on the froth concentrate grade estimated by MIA and recovery inferred by image analysis is discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe development of control strategies to achieve satisfactory control performance has always been a great challenge for engineers and the need for improved process diagnosis, control and optimization has become more and more evident for the mineral processing industry in the last decades. That is why new process variables need to be measured particularly in highly multivariable processes such as flotation. This industrial process is subject to a wide variety of disturbances mainly generated by frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in physical and/or chemical ore characteristics and also, due to some irregularities in manual process operating procedures. The completion of the first two open hearth furnaces in the new No. 2 open hearth plant at Port Kembla will increase Australian production of steel by 350,000 tons of ingots per annum.The paper gives an outline of the essential features of open hearth design and auxiliary equipment required to operate the two modern open hearth furnaces at present being installed.INTRODUCTIONThe increasing demand for steel required by Australian secondary industries led to the decision to construct and operate No. 2 open hearth plant at Port Kembla. Two basic open hearth furnaces of the most modern design are under construction and it is anticipated that these units will be commissi.oned in September 1956. Australian steel capacity will thereby be increased by approximately 350,000 tons of ingots per annum.PLANT LAY-OUT AND CONSTRUCTIONIn the design and lay-out of this plant the emphasis has been on efficient material handling with simplicity of design and operation. A demonstrated reserve base (DRB) of bituminous coal suitable for cokemaking has been estimated based on the latest published information on U.S. coal reserves. Bureau of Mines analyses of raw coalbed samples were used to classify the coals as low-, medium-, and high-volatile bituminous and grade them as premium, marginal, and latent coking coals. Coal rank was used as the basis for identifying coking coals, and ash and sulfur content were used to determine coking coal grade. The demonstrated reserve base of coking coal for the entire United States is 162.67 billion tons. However, only 18.96 billion tons are premium (metallurgical) grade, and between 80 and 99 percent occurs in the Eastern States. The demonstrated reserve base of marginal-grade coking coal is 31.3 billion tons; more than half the marginal reserve base is in the Eastern States, and most of the medium- and low-volatile marginal coals are in the Eastern States. The Eastern and Midwestern States contain most of the latent-grade DRB of 112.4 billion tons; most (106.6 billion tons) is high-volatile coal, and 98 percent of the medium- and low-volatile latent coals occur in the Eastern States. Based on the worst assumption, which assumes that only premium-grade coals are used for cokemaking, the DRB for high-volatile coal would suffice for 127 years, the medium-volatile coal for 80 years, and the low-volatile coal for 83 years.

"SynopsisThe most widely used support design damage criterion for rockburst-prone mines is based upon kinetic energy, which is proportional to the square of the ejection velocity and is commonly expressed in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV). Field monitoring and back-analyses have shown that ejection velocities of the order of 10 m/s and higher can result from seismic events of moderate magnitude. Such velocities are much higher than those predicted using PPV obtained from scaling laws. It has also been found that the peak ground motion (i.e. PPV) on the surface of an excavation is preferentially amplified (by four- to tenfold) compared to the motion in solid rock at a similar distance from the source. However, the wave propagation and interaction processes involved within the fractured rock in generating high ground motion are very complex and are not well understood at this time.In this paper, velocity amplification was investigated by modelling the dynamic interaction between fractured rock and a free surface using a 2D discontinuum-based numerical program, UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code). A 1D model with a fractured zone was used to represent the fractured rock. Velocity amplification, quantified by PPV, predicted at the free end of the model was 2.0–3.6 times higher than the input velocity. It was found that the wave frequency, fracture stiffness, fracture spacing, and thickness of fractured zone are the main factors that affect the velocity amplification. The results have proved that the interaction of the seismic wave and multiple fractures near the free surface strongly influences the ground motion.IntroductionSince mining-induced seismicity is almost inevitable in deep mines, ground support is generally employed to mitigate the risk of seismically-induced damage. The most widely used support design criterion for seismicallyprone mines is one that seeks to maximize the absorption of the kinetic energy (plus potential energy if a gravity component is considered) of key rock blocks. Based on this criterion, design methods for rock support were first proposed by Wagner (1984) in South Africa and later improved, among others, by Roberts and Brummer (1988) and Kaiser et al. Cononish is a steep, narrow NE-SW trending vein system that was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments. It shows brittle style deformation and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian foliations. The ore shoots plunge 45¦SW, have a 40 to 80?m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 and 260?m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two and rarely three of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold. Silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally <100?¦m in size and locally clusters. Visible gold up to 2000?¦m in size is rare. Gold and silver are generally spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur also. Electrum and gold occur with galena in pyrite-hosted fractures. Gold is also associated with the contacts between galena and pyrite grains. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Over 16?km of diamond drilling and a 1.2?km exploration adit has provided data to support a Mineral Resource estimate of 169?000?oz Au and 631?000?oz Ag reported in accordance with the 2004 JORC Code.CITATION:Dominy, S C, Platten, I M, Xie, Y and Sangster, C J S, 2013. The West Coast contains one of the world's giant placer gold deposits with production since the 1860s totalling some six million ounces (present day value NZ$ 3.6 billion). The deposits have been worked variously by hand, ground sluicing, hydraulicking and/or elevating, blocking out, deep leading and bucketline dredging. Since the sharp gold price rise of 1979 - 1980 gold production has increased steadily (in spite of the closure of the Kaniere dredge) to some 30 000 ounces (933 kg) in 1984. Production is primarily from some 100 medium scale mining, operations treating 50 - 200 000 m3 of auriferous late Pleistocene fluvial gravels year. In spite of their economic value the deposits remain only poorly investigated and many fundamental questions relating to the origin and formation of the deposits remain unanswered. This paper attempts to describe the geology of the deposits and outline a genetic model for their formation, and then discusses some of the economic aspects and current limitations and opportunities of the growing alluvial gold mining industry of the region.

Borehole mining (BHM) is a remotely operated method of extracting rock material through boreholes by high-pressure water jets. Figure 1 illustrates a BHM tool and fluids circulation. The tool consists of at least two pipes, one for pumping down high-pressure water, the second for delivering slurry to the surface. This article reviews the BHM process. It discusses current and new applications for borehole mining and help the readers determine if BHM is applicable in their situations. Previous articles in ME about BHM explained either a particular project (ME, April 2001, pp. 33-36) or a newest patent in this area (ME, March 1991, pp. 313-318). However, neither one provided an overview on the modern BHM technology.

An investigation was made to determine the mechanical properties of oil shale at elevated temperatures and confining pressures, the thermal properties at elevated temperatures, and to provide mathematical models for mine design for in situ oil shale retorting. A review of current activity in in situ retorting is included with a comprehensive list of references. Tests were run at temperatures from 20°C to 500°C and confining pressures to 1500 psi with shale of 10 to 30 gallons per ton. A major loss of strength occured in heating 140°C with a partial regain from 380°C to 500°C. Higher grade shale had lower compressive strength. Elastic properties showed large variations. Brazilian tensile strength showed a similar temperature sensitivity as the compressive strength. Equations were developed for each property in terms of grade, temperature and pressure. Thermal, electrical and acoustical properties showed anomalies through the temperature range. Creep is a major factor in overall deformation of heated shale. Oil shale was found to be an excellent insulator. Loss of pillar support area at 800 hours of heating would be about 10 percent. Good correlation was found between a finite element model using the developed properties and an in situ heater test.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) is currently conducting a coal resource assessment of the coalbeds and zones that are projected to provide the bulk of the nation’s resources for the next few decades. The Pittsburgh and Upper Freeport coals are the first two beds in the northern and central Appalachian basin region to undergo fully digital coal assessments. The bed-specific assessments are being carried out in partnership with the state geologic surveys of West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Comprehensive stratigraphic and geochemical databases have been developed for both of the beds. The extent of the bed with mined areas, structure contour, isopach, and overburden thickness maps for the Pittsburgh coal bed have been released as USGS open-file reports.

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on longwall mining in the United States. Part one was published in the December 2005 issue of ME (pp. 21-26). It provided a history of longwall coal mining in the United States. It also discussed the technology involved in the productivity gains and operational improvements. Boyd anticipates that U.S. coal production will increase by 61 Mt (67 million st) (6 percent) from 2004 to 2010. A combination of higher surface and underground mine production will be required to meet the projected market demand. Boyd’s projections of coal production by major mining methods are shown in Table 1.

Over 60,000 multiple anchors have been used internationally since their introduction in the early 1990s, including 1000 in the United States. The multiple anchor system comprises a "multiple" of "unit" anchors installed within a single borehole - each unit anchor being staggered within the borehole length to mobilize its own capacity independently of the other unit anchors. These systems offer higher capacity than conventional anchors with identical bond lengths due to superior load transfer efficiency. The use of higher capacity anchors may allow reduction in the number of anchors required on a project, which results in time and cost benefits to the anchor installer, contractor, and the owner. Fully removable temporary multiple anchors are available, and have been used with consistent success. Three case histories are discussed highlighting the use of these systems

The Equis and El Roble projects are located in the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The Equis vein deposits have sulfide ore reserves of 95.9.5.5 mt (105.770 st) grading 8.51 g/mt (0.248 oz/st) gold and 12.4 g/ml (0.36 oz/st) silver with 0.94 % copper. 1.10 a lead and 11.06% zinc. Ore reserves at El Roble are estimated as 1.1% Mmt (1.21 million st) grading 4.89% copper and 3.39 g/mt (0.099 oz/st) ,old. Geologically possible reserves at Equis may total 1.6.Mmt (1.76 million it). El Roble has the potential to contain several tens of millions of metric tons. Exploration included diamond drilling, trenching, channel sampling, rock and soil geochemistry, geophysics and tunneling. Erratic high grade samples affect the weighting of channel and drill core samples. Secondary reconcentration of gold is also a factor. Sample maps and graphs show the distribution of values to be highly variable. Geostatistical treatment of some of these data gave important guidelines for parameters such as sampling densities, drill hole spacing and confidence limits.

This Bureau of Mines publication consists of an overview of the mine waste management research currently being conducted by the Bureau. The following papers, given at a Technology Transfer Workshop, emphasize the increasing importance of research related to the safety and environmental considerations of mine waste disposal In recent years. Current work related to legislation passed in the last 10 years and their subsequent standards includes the development of adequate monitoring systems, development of stability and seepage prediction and control techniques, control of runoff water, and control of leaching solutions. Selected topics are included here that cover coal mine waste disposal, embankment slope stability monitoring, flow failures of mine tailings impoundments, and controlled burnout of abandoned coal mine fires. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.
