"Sulphuric acid treated with hydrogen peroxide to destroy organic contaminants could conceivably show increased corrosivity toward carbon steel shipping and storage vessels, caused by the persistence of a peroxide residual. This paper describes work performed to determine the effect of 0-200ppm hydrogen peroxide on the corrosion of carbon steel by 93% and 98% sulphuric acid at room temperature (23ºC) and 50ºC.Steel electrodes were exposed to acid containing several peroxide levels (0. 45, iOO and 200 ppm) for up to two weeks. Specimens were removed at intervals and weight loss, open circuit potential, depth of metal loss and residual peroxide concentration recorded.Hydrogen peroxide decomposes considerably over two weeks in iron-contaminated sulphuric acid. initial peroxide concentrations > l00 ppm suppress corrosion, but the effect is lost when concentration decays below about 60 ppm. Sustained peroxide levels in the range below 60 ppm may increase corrosion rates. These phenomena are interpreted by analogy with anodic passivation."

Research shows that water neutralizes the explosion hazard of coal dust when present in sufficient quantity and when intimately mixed with the dust. The quantity of water required to neutralize coal dust and coal-rock dust mixtures is about equal to the limiting moisture adsorptive capacity of the dust; the adsorptive capacity increases with increase in the fineness and volatile content of the coal. Pools of water or high atmospheric humidity do not reduce the explosion hazard. Although wetted dust is less dispersible than dry dust, poor dispersibility cannot be relied on as the sole safeguard against explosion. Dust mixtures that contain water in excess of their limiting adsorptive capacity are dispersed and ignited by severe initiation sources. Pure coal dust adsorbs water with difficulty and retains water poorly; adsorption and retention is increased by the addition of rock dust the coal; the rock dust agglutinates wetted coal and assures that incombustible is present should drying occur. Therefore, it is advantageous to rock-dust wet areas in bituminous coal and lignite mines. When coal-rock dust mixtures are wetted and subsequently dried, the explosion hazard is about the same as for dust which was not wetted.

The Triassic Ipswich (SE. Queensland) coals are of bituminous rank. The more exact rank of individual samples was determined by measuring the reflectance of the vitrinite. While in general the rank of the coals increases with stratigraphic depth, minor reversals, probably related to igneous intrusions, occur.The Ipswich coals form a coherent group so far as petrographic type is concerned. All are comparatively rich in vitrite and clarite, cutinite being the common maceral of the exinite group. The mineral contents of all the coals are comparatively high, clay and quartz being most abundant. The coals appear to be of essentially autochthonous origin, and to have been formed under conditions of fairly rapid subsidence.While the use of the coals is at present restricted to combustion, most have pronounced coking properties, as would be predicted from their petrographic composition and reflectance. However, the high mineral content of the coals would be a limiting factor in their use for coke-making.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last ten years, the Division of Coal Research, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization has carried out an extensive investigation of Australian coals, providing a wide range of analyses of most of the important of them. Special attention has been given in recent years to Queensland coals.Most seams were sampled as a number of subsections, enabling the internal variations, as well as the overall properties, to be assessed. "Owing to the corrosiveness of the untreated brackish cooling water typically used for steel mills (and other environments), it is important to treat the water and monitor corrosion in such systems. Generally, corrosion rates are monitored with corrosion probes inserted into a pipeline or vessel. This has been standard practice for many years, and is widely accepted in industry. Typically, two kinds of probes are used - electrical resistance and linear polarization resistance (LPR) probes.In this study, the effectiveness and accuracy of the LPR technique was evaluated by comparing the electrochemical measurements with the results of mass loss tests using corrosion coupons. The corrosivity of the environment, a synthetic brackish water, was varied by varying the calcium hardness and alkalinity, and to simulate actual plant conditions temperatures of 35°C and 45°C were used. In addition to the corrosion rate measurements, the iron concentration was measured, as well as the imbalance from the probe.The corrosion rates obtained by LPR were from 57% lower to 385%higher than those from the immersion tests. Most probe measurements were higher than the immersion results, and 50% of the probe results were50% or more higher than the immersion results. The best correspondence between the two methods was obtained at low calcium levels, except for one measurement that was 93% higher than the coupon results. There was no clear correlation between parameters such as temperature and total alkalinity and the difference between the results. It would therefore appear that LPR measurements can differ significantly from immersion results, and LPR results should therefore be used with caution in industrial applications."

One of New York City?s largest subway projects is under way 43 m (140 ft) beneath the surface of downtown Manhattan. The East Side Access project, more than 30 years in the making, was halted after a partial excavation in the 1970s due to a lack of funding. The project, once dubbed the ?Tunnel to Nowhere,? has been revitalized into a groundbreaking subway line that includes unique tunnel boring machines (TBM), construction methods and muck removal systems. Project overview The East Side Access project involves construction of a new 6.7-km (4.2-mile) subway line needed to relieve heavy traffic congestion between the boroughs of Queens and Manhattan. The line will serve approximately 160,000 commuters daily between Grand Central and Sunnyside rail stations. Manhattan and Queens will be connected under the East River by the 63rd Street tunnel, a submersed double-decker tube. The submersed tube consists of reinforced concrete sections barged in place on the riverbed. The tube contains operational subway lines on the top deck, while the bottom deck (the ?Tunnel to Nowhere?) will become operational when the East Side Access project is completed in 2013.

For TBM tunneling no visual inspection of excavated ground is possible. This may hinder the high-speed excavation, particularly in complex ground conditions. The TBM Excavation Control System was developed for better prediction of geological conditions ahead of the tunnel face during excavation. The seismic reflector tracing produces volumetric images of anomalies in the ground in “near-real time.” These images are verified using logging data from pilot boring and TBM driving data, to improve reliability and precision of ground mapping. Also good correlation was obtained between the rock strength index computed from TBM data, and one derived from volumetric seismic images.

Quality control is essential for augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles (also known as continuous flight auger (CFA) piles outside the United States) and drilled displacement (DD) piles since the pile is constructed below the ground surface out of the direct sight of the personnel constructing and inspecting the pile. ACIP piles are being successfully constructed to support high-rise structures, hospitals, arenas and stadiums, mass transit systems, and power and industrial facilities. The use of DD pile technology is also gaining ground in the United States, typically utilizing proprietary systems such as Omega (currently utilized by Richard Goettle Inc., and LG Barcus and Sons, Inc.), Berkel, and DeWal (currently utilized by Morris-Shea). Different types of ACIP/DD pile installation equipment are shown in Figures 1 and 2. ACIP piles are installed into granular and cohesive soils, and soft rock to lengths currently approaching 130 ft (39.5 m), with diameters up to 24 to 36 inches (610 to 915 mm), and sustaining design loads approaching 900 kips (4000 kN). Current DD pile installation equipment in the United States is capable of installing up to 79-ft-long (24 m) piles with diameters ranging from 12 to 18 inches (305 mm to 460 mm).

The Wharf Resources mine, located in the Bald Mountain Mining District approximately 6.4 km (4miles) west of Lead, South Dakota, has operated a surface gold and silver mine and heap leaching processing facility since 1983. Wharf Resources intends to mine and process gold and silver ore from the Wharf Expansion area which is located on the eastern flank of the currently permitted Foley Ridge Mine. The Trojan Pit for the Wharf Expansion area was initially designed with an overall highwall slope angle of 45o. During mine permit presubmission meetings with personnel from the SD Department of Environment and Natural Resources (SD DENR), the question arose as to whether a detailed slope stability analysis of the proposed Trojan Pit highwalls was completed to justify the 45o slope. Wharf’s response was that the highwall design was based, in part, upon studies completed in1987 on the Annie Creek and Foley Ridge Mines; and, in part, upon subsequent slope stability analyses conducted by Wharf mine personnel through 1996. It was suggested by the SD DENR that the stability study be updated to reflect structural geological conditions in the Wharf Expansion area.

A new process for leaching zinc sulphide concentrates with gaseous mixtures of SO2 and O2 in aqueous solution is described.The reaction of SO2/O2 with Rosebery, Mt. Isa, Broken Hill and Elura zinc concentrates yields zinc and iron sulphates, elemental sulphur and some sulphuric acid. Rates of zinc extraction are controlled by a surface chemical reaction without apparent interference from the elemental sulphur layer for SO2 concentrations up to 9 per cent in the gas phase. Pyrite in concentrate exerts an activating effect, possibly through galvanic interaction with the sphalerite. Metal extractions are dependent on SO2 and O2 tenors of the gas, particle size, and the acidity and zinc content of the solution, but are independent of the ferric ion level. Extractions also reach maxima at about 85°C.Generation of acid may be prevented by conducting the reaction in the presence of ferrous iron and at acidities of 40 g/l or greater. Zinc and iron levels in Elura lead concentrate may be reduced by leaching with SO2/O2.

This report establishes a methodology for the evaluation of gas detection devices and is the result of a critical investigation into the basic principles defining gas detector performance. A scheme is presented to evaluate the performance of a test sample of gas detectors based on the detector type and intended application. Test procedures, worksheets, test apparatus, glossary and statistical methods for handling test data arc given. In addition, evaluation standards and test parameters are identified. It is intended that this report serve as a comprehensive framework for the eventual certification of all gas detectors for mine applications. A plan is proposed and recommended for the quantification and implementation of evaluation standards for gas detection device certification.

Experiments in the bolting of a mine roof were commenced at Elrington Colliery on the South Maitland Coal Field early in 1949, following the appearance of an article in the American publication, "Coal Mine Modernisation Year Book" 1948. Prior to this, although bolting had not been used in the maintenance of satisfactory roof conditions, the principle of roof bolt anchorage had been illustrated in instances such as the hanging of a trolley locomotive power wire using an expanding shell type of bolt anchorage, or the insertion of an eye bolt with a split and wedge, as used to suspend a rope block over a winze being sunk in a metalliferous mine.The experiments at Elrington Colliery were the first efforts in this country to supplement the work of timber supports under a mine roof with systematic placement of roof bolts.Following the series of experiments at Elrington, full scale bolting was commenced at that Colliery in a trackless mobile section in April, 1950.The obvious success of the system at Elrington indicated that it might also be a success in the support of weak roof strata immediately overlying the workable section of the Victoria Tunnel Seam at John Darling Colliery.The system was commenced at John Darling Colliery in April, 1951, in one mechanical section on the Victoria Tunnel Seam, and the scope was gradually widened until by December, 1952, ail'six mechanical units then operating on this seam were working under bolted roofs.

"The last few decades have seen some remarkable advancement in information technology, but recently various digital technologies have resulted in several synergies to deliver innovation in diverse applications. The mining industry has been relatively slow in adopting these technologies compared to the other industries, but this scenario is changing fast.Challenges. Mining companies globally are going through a series of challenges such as declining ore grades with complex metallurgy, increasing depth of ore bodies, high capital and operating costs, lower productivity, shortage of technical resources, significant pressure from stake-holders to deliver, along with growing environmental and corporate social responsibility issues. Improvement in profitability would need significant improvements in operational performance.Consequently, over the last few years, there has been a major focus among some mining companies to imbibe operational excellence. This has been only possible because of the replacement of a silos-based approach by an integrated view of the organization. Such an integrated view is now possible via the evolving digital technologies. Even so, such a transformation calls for a change in culture, which, for most organizations is not trivial. Attempts in the past to integrate functions, such as through mine-to-mill initiatives in the mining industry, have demonstrated significant benefits to many operations (McKee, 2013). Still, sustaining these benefits has clearly been a challenge due to manpower turnover and lack of proper systems and structures that integrate information between business functions within an operation and between operations and the corporate level.Opportunities. The advent of digital technology has opened up opportunities to integrate interdepartmental information for a unified understanding across an entire organization. The advances in instrumentation, equipment control systems, supervisory control systems (SCADA/ Historian) and industrial networks have helped in the direction of enterprise- wide integration. Temperature-dependent functions of various ten-sile flour stress and fracture parameters were investigated on iron and low composition alloys of Fe-C, Fe-Cr, Fe-Mn, and Fe-Ni. Data were obtained over a range of test temperatures from 200" to -196"C at an initial strain rate of 0.01 min". It was found that the strain-hardening exponent, n, for the Fe-Ni alloys increased significantly at very low testing temperatures with increased alloy addition. Also, the stress and strain at fracture followed a predictable transitional type of behavior. The flour stress-temperature dependence was evaluated employing the relation: M where it is shown that composition can strongly influence the constant M. An empirical formula describing this effect is as follows: M = MI (equivalent at. pct Ni)-'" Some preliminay, tests were run on several commercial steels to test the generality of this relationship. One of the phenomenological explanations of the ductile-to-brittle transition encountered in bcc metals is based upon the difference in the temperature dependence of the flow and fracture stresses.' It states simply that the fracture stress is relatively insensitive to temperature and that the yield or flow stress rises rapidly with decreasing temperature so that, when the flow stress reaches the fracture stress, brittle fracture occurs without appreciable plastic deformation. This behavior is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1 where the ductile-to-brittle transition is shown to occur at two possible temperatures. The lowest temperature, TB, represents essentially completely brittle behavior while the higher temperature, TN, represents "notch" brittle behavior. Support for this theory is obtained when it is observed that fcc metals, which do not commonly have a ductile-to-brittle transition, also do not commonly exhibit any strong temperature de- pendence of the yield stress. This relationship of yield or flow stress behavior with the ductile-to-brittle transition has been generally observed for most metals representative of these two crystallo-graphic structures. One exception to this generalization appears in the case of tantalum where no apparent ductile-to-brittle transition has been observed. However, this may simply be an indication that this type of behavior is not directly related to the flow stress and that some other mechanism such as twinning must also be operative. A comparison of the typical temperature dependence of the yield stress of some representative metals is shown in Fig. 2. INTRODUCTION Behavior of clay soils in response to tunneling is reasonably well understood by reference to the tunnel stability factor NT = Pz/su (Peck, 1969; Heuer, 1974). With this analysis tool, care must be taken to use a value of clay shear strength which represents the actual mass strength, considering such factors as slickensided fissures often found in stiff and hard clays. Behavior of clean sand and gravel soils is also reasonably well understood. Above the water table these soils must be assumed to act as running ground unless they are known to have significant cementation or have a very dense and angular interlocked grain structure. Below the water table they must be tunneled using some form of groundwater control such as dewatering, grouting, freezing, or internal fluid pressure in the tunnel such as compressed air or a slurry tunneling machine. The internal fluid pressure must approximately balance the external water head. Without such precautions these soils behave as flowing ground and may yield large volumes of water flow into the tunnel. A wide range of very fine sand, silty sand, cohesionless silt, and clayey sand soils exist in nature in a variety of geologic environments. The behavior of these soils in response to tunneling, and guidelines for anticipating their behavior, are not well described in the literature. Because of their content of fine particles, these materials may behave as if they initially have appreciable cohesion and moderate to low permeability. They may exhibit significant standup time, and require tunnel internal fluid pressure (compressed air or slurry pressure) less than the full external water head. It is important to be able to estimate the behavior of these soils when planning construction methods. For example, if the external water pressure is 140 kPa (20 psi), but soil stability at the tunnel face can be achieved as a compressed air pressure of 80 kPa (12 psi), a large cost savings may result.

According to the temporal and spatial distribution of regional metallogenesis, thePacific Rim can be divided into four global metallogenetic systems. The Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt is the typical representative of intracontinental metallogenetic systems. This belt resulted from Mesozoic and partly pre-Mesozoic tectonic magmatism, mainly related to S-type granite of crustal source that was generated by collisional orogeny combined with oceanic subduction in intracontinental and continental margin settings. Based on the concept of metallogenetic series, there is a group of mineralised ore types showing a definite spatial and temporal distribution from endogenetic to exogenetic. These metallogenetic series are widely distributed in the Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt, and are well developed in Southeast China. Five metallogenetic series and two petro-minerogenesis evolution models have been established according to their tectonic settings, various types of granitoids and metallogenetic evolution.
