INTRODUCTION Before a mine is planned in detail, a preliminary analysis is often conducted. This preplanning permits the mining engineer to make a rapid assessment as to whether or not a particular mining property warrants further consideration. In fact, a properly conducted preplanning phase can come within 10% to 20% of the actual results, thereby saving the mining engineer valuable time before committing himself to a fine-tuned analysis. The questions to be answered by mine preplanning are (1) What will be the operating conditions for the mine? and (2) How long will it take to complete the project? To answer these questions, calculations dealing with reserve estimation, production planning, man- power planning, and project scheduling are conducted. The following sections discuss these various phases of mine preplanning in greater detail. RESERVE ESTIMATION The estimation of the various characteristics of a reserve, such as quantity, grade, and thickness, is an ongoing process throughout the life of a mining venture. However, the reserve-estimation phase of mine planning is more closely associated with the preplanning phase. There are many different techniques employed in reserve estimation of solid mineral deposits; variations among them are introduced because of such considerations as ease of application or level of accuracy. In any event, each technique is developed in the following manner: (1) the mineral body is represented pictorially and then subdivided into blocks related to one or more samples of exploration data, (2) the area and volume of each block is determined, (3) the volumes are converted to representative tonnages (or, for example, grades), and (4) the results are tabulated. To illustrate this procedure, the polygonal (area-of- influence) technique will be presented due to its ease of application, flexibility in dealing with different deposits, and general acceptance. The polygonal method assumes that all characteristics of a mineral body extend halfway between a point of observation and any other point of observation. The explored portion of the mineral body is represented by polygonal prisms whose depths relate to the characteristic in question (grade, thickness, etc.) and whose plane bases relate to the area of influence of each point of observation (drill hole, etc.) as shown in Fig. 1. The polygons must be constructed in a definite order, usually clockwise and from the periphery to the center of the deposit. Table 1 can then be used to calculate the characteristics in question. Since, by definition, the polygonal method assumes that the characteristics of a mineral body extend half- way between points of observation, it becomes readily apparent that the evaluation of a vertical-drill hole exploration program requires that the sides of the polygons be formed by the intersection of perpendicular bisectors (Fig. 2). Figs. 3 and 4 show correct and incorrect construction of the polygons. The criterion for correct construction of the polygons is that all points within a particular polygon must be closer to its rallying point than those located in any other polygon. This is clearly not the case for certain points that are located in the polygon containing rallying point B in Fig. 4. Although this method can be used where the drill holes are irregularly spaced, calculations become less tedious when a square net (Fig. 5) or a chessboard (Fig. 6) grid is adopted. The numbers shown in Figs. 5 and 6 represent the relative weight for each of the shaded areas. In general, the greater the number of polygons, the more continuous the mineral body, and the more regular the grid, then the more accurate the computations will be. PRODUCTION PLANNING Before an acceptable evaluation of the production potential of a mine can be determined, a thorough exploration program should be conducted. It seems obvious that the nature and properties of the deposit and adjacent strata, the presence of impurities, and other mining conditions should be adequately determined prior to production planning and equipment selection. The lack of sufficiently detailed knowledge of the many mining parameters has led to the failure of numerous operations. For example, targeted production tonnages and equipment sizes for a coal mine are intimately related to the seam thickness. Needless to say the quality of information that is gathered from an exploration program can have a tremendous impact on the production plan. The Bureau of Mines inventoried all lands in Alaska to determine the availability of land for oil, gas, and coal leasing. Acreage for onshore oil, gas, and coal basins was digitized as was land ownership data. Regulatory policy concerning oil, gas, and coal leasing for various government agencies and private concerns was determined. Oil and gas basins underlie 79.4 million acres of Alaska's 378 million acre landbase. Federal agencies manage 44 million of these acres. The Bureau of Land Management is the lead agency for most oil and gas leasing on Federal lands. Lands have to be specifically opened for oil and gas leasing to be available. The state of Alaska manages 21.1 million acres underlain by these basins. More than 80 percent of this acreage is available for resource development. Native corporations manage the remaining 14.3 million acres of favorable oil and gas land. Coal basins underlie nearly 51 million acres of Alaska. Of this land, 26.4 million acres are under Federal jurisdiction. The state manages 17.3 million acres of land underlain by coal basins. Nearly 7.3 million acres of favorable coal lands are managed by Native corporations.

The control of environmental effects, especially blast vibration and airblast, has become a dominating planning criterion for most surface blasting operations. Compliance with existing regulations is generally achieved through constraints in the blast design, or monitoring programs. Commonly, blast vibration and airblast signals are rated and compared by their maximum amplitude and the associated principal frequency. However, this data reduction limits the interpretation of the influence of varying blast design parameters on the vibration and airblast.

A rotating magnetic field can be produced in a magnetic separator by using a magnet rotor fitted with alternate north-south magnetic poles, similar to the rotors currently used in modern eddy current separators. Rotation of the magnetic field causes ferromagnetic particles to rotate during magnetic separation. The particle rotation can then be used simply to remove entrapment during a conventional attraction magnetic separation (RMF lift separation), or it can be used to roll particles away from non-rotating particles, and to move them out of the separator under their own rotation (RMF rotation separation). RMF (rotating magnetic field) separation is a separation for ferromagnetic particles. These particles have a very ordered magnetism that is locked into directions of easy magnetisation in the crystal. As a result, if the external field rotates, the particles attempt to rotate with it. RMF separation uses this fact to rotate the ferromagnetic particles in a rotating field. In contrast, paramagnetic particles have a magnetism that can point in any direction with almost equal ease, and these will not rotate in a rotating field. By making use of this difference in magnetic properties, RMF rotation separation can separate ferromagnetic particles from paramagnetic, even when the particles have similar susceptibilities. Some particles such as both chrome spinel and ilmenite can contain ferromagnetic regions within a paramagnetic matrix. These ferromagnetic regions can vary from very small regions dispersed throughout the crystal, through thin lamellae, to larger more bulky regions. Although most natural ilmenite is ferromagnetic and generally has a higher magnetic susceptibility than paramagnetic chrome spinel, the susceptibility ranges for the two minerals overlap considerably (Allen, 2000a) due to the presence of these ferromagnetic elements, frequently making the conventional magnetic separation of these two minerals impractical. It is known that roasting a mixture of ilmenite and chrome spinel particles increases the magnetic susceptibility of the ilmenite while leaving the spinel susceptibility substantially unchanged. This makes the use of conventional (susceptibility attraction) magnetic separation more practical for the separation of these two minerals. However, very little is known about the effects of roasting on the response of ilmenite and spinel particles to a rotating magnetic field. For example, although the optimal ilmenite roasting conditions for conventional magnetic separation are quite well established such conditions may or may not be optimal for RMF rotation separation. Low intensity conventional magnetic separation on the basis of magnetic susceptibility can be made more accurate if it is carried out in a rotating field, because the rapid spinning of the separating particles prevents the formation of magnetic flocs, and reduces entrapment and entrainment. Medium intensity RMF rotation-only separation (no attraction component) has the ability to separate rotating (ferromagnetic) from non-rotating (paramagnetic) particles, irrespective of their relative magnetic susceptibilities. RMF rotation separation is of particular interest in this case because ilmenite particles generally rotate much better than the mainly paramagnetic chrome spinel particles, and roasting could enhance this difference further. Further information on the use of RMF to separate minerals can be found in Allen (2000a; b and c). The aim of this series of tests on a number of Australian ilmenites was to compare some different oxidising and reducing roast methods and to establish whether the use of RMF rotation separation improves the chrome spinel rejection.

"Abstract Application of soil displacement screw pile (known as SDS pile) has been experiencing accelerated growth in Chinese deep foundation industry because of its technical advantages, environmental benefits, and cost effective as well. As bored displacement piling, SDS piles are able to perform better than non-displacement piling such as CFA plies due to changing the stress state in the soil around SDS piles during the installation. Therefore the design methods between the conventional pile type and SDS pile type have some differences. Based on the methodology research, current Chinese piling rigs, displacement augers and piling projects are introduced, and the current design approaches for SDS piles in China are also described. Moreover, the design results are verified by using full scale load tests, and a part of the research results of SDS piling system acquired in China are presented.IntroductionThe Continuous Flight Auger Pile, also known as the CFA pile, has occupied about 22% in the pile market all over the world (Van Impe, 2004; Bottiau, 2006). The CFA piles are usually used for large diameter (600mm~1200mm) pile foundations and deep excavation projects. Whereas the small size CFA piles (400mm~500mm) are mainly applied for composite foundations in China. In the past 10 years, the new technology of soil displacement screw piling has been applied worldwide (Prezzi et al., 2005). And it is also extensively used for high-rise buildings, industrial plants and railway projects in China (shown in Figure 1)."

The legal issues surrounding the regulation of subsidence are among the major concerns facing the underground mining industry today. Whether subsidence occurs almost immediately as a result of longwall mining or without warning as a result of room and pillar mining conducted years ago, the resulting disputes are highly controversial and typical of the disputes involving the competing interests of surface and mineral estate owners. Until recently, the law governing these disputes was firmly established under the common law. The passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act 1, the utilization of new mining technologies, and the general heightened environmental awareness of our times, however, have interjected new issues into this area of the law. State and Federal court decisions and administrative agency interpretations have helped clarify some of the issues. However, as evidenced by the many recent lawsuits between operators, surface owners, and regulatory agencies, many uncertainties still exist.

Renison Bell is on the Emu Bay Railway, midway between Zeehan and Rosebery on the west coast of Tasmania. The tin deposits in this area have been described by G. A. WaIler (1902), L. K. Ward (1909), H. Hermani (1914), and Hartwell Conder (1918), for the Tasmanian Geological Survey. The ore-bodies occur in the slates, grits, altered lava flows and tufts of the Dundas Series, and consist of fine-grained cassiterite disseminated through massive sulphides (chiefly pyrrhotite or pyrite), or through bodies of quartz and sulphides. Some of these bodies show a N.W.-S.E. strike, parallel to the strike of the tin belt, but others strike N.E.-S;W. or E.-W.The ore-bodies are of two types: (1) steeply dipping fissure veins,' spoken of locally as "feeders," and (2) flatter-lying bodies more or less conformable with the bedding planes of the slates (bedded veins), spoken of locally as "floors."The feeders range from 5-12 ft. in width, with occasional bulges as great as 4q ft. Their lengths vary from 100 ft. to several hundred yards, and they are known to continue to Clmsiderable depths. 'They dip steeply, generally at angles of 45° to 60° to the east or south.The floors, where they occur, 'are directly connected with the feeders, and are sheet-iike bodies of sulphide ore. The composite ore-bodies thus have the shape of an inverted L, or a T, according to whether 'the floor extends out from one side or both sides of the feeder. Most of the floors extend from the hanging-wall side of the feeder. Where erosion has removed the connection, they appear as separate bodies.The feeders as a rule carry more quartz and arsenopyrite than the floors, and are richer in tin. In addition, the cassiterite tends to be coarser grained in the feeders than in the floors. The floors, on the other hand, carry a greater proportion of -sulphides, chiefly pyrrhotite, and the grade of ore and grain size of the cas,siterite tend to decrease as the floor is followed down the dip away from the feeder, so that the outer and lower extremities of the floors may be too low-grade to work economically. The average grade of the ore worked at present is 0·9,0/0 tin. The slates forming the roofs of the floors are commonly much contorted and silicified,' so that they form hard rocks in which the contortion and shattering of the original slates are well preserved. Joints extending upwards, more or less at right angles to the roof of the floor, are occasionally filled with finely crystalline quartz, similar to that in the orebodies, and are often rich in tin, so much so that the slate as a whole may average 0·4% tin.Some carbonate gangue is present in all of the ore-bodies, commonly on the footwall side, and, in places it becomes an important constituent...

Heavy mineral deposits have been known from Liberia since the1950s from both river and beach placers. The heavy mineral content of beach sands ranges between 28?62% and the suite includes ilmenite, rutile, zircon and magnetite. These occur together with kyanite, sillimanite, staurolite and garnet. The average ilmenite content is 82% with minor zircon (11%), rutile (6%) and monazite (1%). The ilmenite is, however, of poor quality with haematite intergrowths and a titanium content ranging from10?42.4% (average ±25% TiO2). The amounts of rutile and zircon, while of suitable quality, have also previously been deemed too low for economic exploitation.

The widening of the Panama Canal to approximately 130 feet (40 m) for its entire length began just a few years ago. The original expansion program was slated for completion in 18 to 20 years, but has recently been reduced for completion within the next four years. This means that a tremendous amount of blasting at simultaneous points along the canal, by both the Panama Canal Commission (PCC) and many subcontractors, is necessary to achieve the new completion deadline. The accelerated program also imposed many logistical concerns, since marine trafIic is always heavy and cannot be stopped for blasting. Because some of the large and heavy cargo vessels clear the bottom of the canal by only about 6 feet ( 2 m), the blasting cannot result in any large boulders into the center of the canal, for fear of grounding and damaging a vessel, not to mention the traffic delays and lost income of approximately 1 to 2 million dollars per day.

Where pasture production is the intended land use of the areas to be reclaimed, the creation of a suitable growing +medium is a major objective. To achieve this land reclaimers require a sound understanding of the proposed mining plan and a knowledge of the physical, biological and chemical properties of materials intended for resurfacing disturbed areas. Where the original soil is not being replaced in its natural state, research is usually required to determine an alternative growing medium. Results from field research conducted on waste material from the Waihi Gold mine are reported with emphasis on the significance of soil depth in relation to pasture production in this environment.  Problems in extrapolating field research to large scale operations are also considered.   Essentially the requirements for successful pasture production, on surrogate growing medium, are akin to conventional approaches used in New Zealand in the development of unimproved agricultural land. High inputs of fertiliser are initially needed, especially where volcanic soil is used, and careful management of pastures and soils is required to minimise soil erosion and create a sustainable system. In the first three to five years of pasture production, grazing use of the land requires to be dictated by pasture availability and soil conditions and not by animal feed requirements. The use of light stock (young dairy or sheep) is recommended.   Successful land restoration requires a team approach by a range of cooperative specialists including engineers, soil scientists, farm managers, agricultural contractors, landscape architects and environmental officers.

The action of water on a number of Queensland shales which are associated with particular coal measures and oil shales has been studied. The results suggest that the disintegration of some of the shales could cause significant problems in mining and preparation operations. The extent of shale breakdown varies widely from deposit to deposit and from seam to seam but a suitable assessment procedure utilises the test described in AS 1661-1979, and an improved method of presenting the results is described in the paper.

In 1990, Freeport Exploration began regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the republic of Indonesia (Fig. 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work that totaled 2.6 million hm2 (6.4 million acres). The company was subsequently awarded additional concessions that added 1 million hm2 (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments, Freeport’s current land position totals 1.9 million hm2 (4.7 million acres). Freeport began the exploration program to locate additional Grasberg deposits, the largest deposit in the Ertsberg district. But the company recognized that other types of deposits could be present in the largely unexplored area of Irian Jaya.

In the Summer of 2011, emergency repairs to the Jefferson Memorial North Plaza and Seawall were completed. These repairs were necessitated by settlement and lateral movement of the seawall and North Plaza which prompted the National Park Service (NPS) to initiate an investigation as to the possible causes of the movement, and commission a design for its mitigation. Information gathered from extensive instrumentation on site led to the design of a movement mitigation scheme that included demolition of the Ashlar Seawall and reconstruction of a new seawall. The new seawall foundation is an A-Wall consisting of vertical caissons and battered pipe piles connected to the seawall itself. The scheme provides resistance to future vertical and lateral movement of the North Plaza and the new seawall. Repair to the seawall and plaza began in December 2009, and was completed in August 2011. This paper discusses the mechanisms believed to be responsible for settlement and lateral movement, summarizes the procedure followed for design of the mitigation, and describes the construction methods and some challenges faced during the repair.

An extensive series of tests was carried out on a ball mill-rake classifier circuit in the New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. concentrator. The data were used to develop a mathematical model of the operation of a rake classifier and this model has been used in the simulation of the performance of a ball mill-rake classifier circuit on a digital computer. As a result of this simulation it has been possible to develop a technique for the optimization and control of a circuit which includes these units.

Recent literature is reviewed with emphasis on the design and scale up of mixers. Most important aspects of mixing have resulted from the study of Newtonian fluids and only a minor attempt has been made to extend the work to non-Newtonian materials.The rheology of non-Newtonian materials is outlined and the typical behaviour of mineral slurries is indicated.The importance of flow velocity, flow pattern, and fluid turbulence is discussed with relation to suspension of solids and rate of reaction.Data on experimental leaching of ore from Mary Kathleen, Queensland, show the effect of different mixing impellers.In conclusion, factors involved in the selection of a mixer are presented with emphasis on economic appraisal after pilot experimentation.INTRODUCTIONThe subject of mixing has attracted considerable attention during recent years, but relatively little work has been undertaken for the study of non-Newtonian materials. Most work has been restricted to Newtonian fluids because there are less inconsistencies in such study.Mixing, by definition, implies blending or combining, and ranges from gentle mixing which blends the contents of a large tank in 24 hours to violent mixing which completely homogenises the contents of a tank within seconds. Metzner and Otto (1957) have pointed out the present lack of knowledge on the degree (or quality) of mixing. Apart from this fact the design of mixers for Newtonian materials would seem to be reasonably certain.Both capital and operating costs rise rapidly with increasing mixer size. Therefore the design, or selection, of a mixer is a matter for economic consideration in the overall aspect of plant design and operation.

A statistical technique, useful to analyze assay and other data characterized by location in three dimensions, is described in this Bureau of Mines report. If present, trends in the data are defined for the purposes of improving ore estimation, predicting ore beyond existing workings, and aiding geological interpretation. The technique is to fit linear and quadratic polynomial equations to the data through the statistical method of regression analysis. The fitted linear equations have the geometric form of hyperplanes; the fitted quadratic equations have the geometric form of ellipsoids or elliptic hyperboloids of one or two sheets. To visualize these three-dimensional forms, contour maps of a series of plane sections through the fitted surfaces are plotted. Both the fitting of the polynomial equations and the plotting of the con-tour maps are done by electronic computer to facilitate calculations and to obtain accurate results. Computer programs are described in appendixes. Methods employed are illustrated by an example analysis) based on data from a part of the Fresnillo mine) Zacatecas, Mexico.

In 1946 Littlefield, Gray and Godbold published a thorough geologic description of the West Edmond Hunton Lime reservoir, located in Central Oklahoma, and discussion of its early performance.l They stressed implications of the nature of the reservoir rock on performance to be expected with production both by natural means and by pressure maintenance with gas injection. The essence of their analysis was that presence of an extensive interconnected system of fractures and solution channels constituting about 10 percent of the total reservoir void space in otherwise very low permeability reservoir rock would result in severe channeling of naturally encroaching water or injected gas through the fractures with little or no benefit to ultimate recovery of oil. Considerations were in progress to unitize the reservoir for pressure maintenance by gas injection. Some other engineers involved in the project had considerably different opinions at the time regarding continuity of fractures and regarding effects of such fractures on performance. The field was unitized Oct. 1, 1947. Subsequently, pilot gas injection tests were conducted in four areas of the field; large scale waterflooding was conducted in two parts of the field in the Bois d'Arc or Upper Hunton; and pilot waterflooding was conducted in the Chimney Hill or Lower Hunton. Full scale water-flooding is now in progress in the Chimney Hill section where it is oil productive. The primary purpose of this paper is to divine some of the secrets of this reservoir through analysis of all aspects of its performance, with the hope that it will be of help to engineers and operators in developing and operating other low permeability fractured reservoirs. In part, this considers variance of actual performance from some widely used conventional reservoir engineering assumptions. For brevity, other aspects of unit operation and its benefits to the owners are not discussed. Oil and Gas in Place For unit participation, net pay in the Bois #Arc defined by the gross SP anomaly on electric logs totalled 2,100,000 acre-ft in the 30,000-acre reservoir. Development of West Edmond predated modem logging techniques that now would be used to determine "net" or "productive" pay. In Fig. 1 this log pick is compared with detailed core analysis and core descripfion by Littlefield et a1.l for one well identified as A on the index map in Fig. 2. Not all of the gross Bois #Arc section had oil staining, but all cores with measureable intergranular permeability were stained. (The committee selection of the Bois d'Arc SP interval also includes the Frisco section as identified from cores by Littlefield.) The Bois d'Arc is oil productive throughout the entire 600-ft monoclinal accumulation from the eastern upstructure erosional pinchout to the west-side oil-water contact.
