FROM time to time articles have appeared in the technical press on the interesting subject of surface combustion. The theoretical part of the problem has, for practical purposes, received ample consideration in those articles, but the number of practical applications of surface combustion referred to has generally been very small.It is the writer's object to review some recent developments in surface combustion, and also to try to arrive at an estimate of its advantages and possibilities. It is not necessary for this purpose to dilate upon the phenomenon of surface combustion itself. Many interesting things have been said on the subject by Pro£. W. A. Bone, of Leeds, to whose researches the recent developments are largely due. A few illustrations may make clear what is meant by surface combustion.Prof. Bone, in an experiment, took a platinum crucible, which he heated in the flame of a Meker-burner. Then he turned the gas off for a second, and, opening the stop-cock again, allowed the combustible mixture to impinge upon the crucible, thetemperature of which was still well below the ignition temperature of the gas. Although no flame was visible at this stage, it was soon clear that, nevertheless, the gas and air had continued to combine, as the crucible would attain a red heat after a few seconds.Another instance of surface combustion was shown by a Mr. Fletcher, in 1882. He placed an iron ball, weighing 3 lb., on a slab of fireclay, heated it for a few seconds with a blow-pipe, and blew the flame out, leaving the gas-mixture still...

Some important mineral fields are referred to in discussing the formation of placer deposits in Australia.Testing methods include boring by hand, with percussion rigs, with auger and pit digging drills, and by vibro drilling.Sampling errors are minimized by the use of correct techniques and equipment for boring, sampling and sample dressing. A hypothetical set of data is used to demonstrate the final process of evaluation, and somerelevant taxation provisions are discussed.

Past failures of coal refuse embankments have resulted in more intensified efforts in inspections of coal refuse sites. Inspections, however, are mainly qualitative and time consuming. In August 1975 CH2M HILL was awarded a contract to identify, develop, and test a rapid system for monitoring coal refuse embankments to aid in inspections. The rapid monitoring system developed uses convergent and vertical photography from conventional fixed-wing aircraft. The system was tested on an active landslide and on two coal refuse facilities using both black and white and color infrared film. Field tests showed the system was capable of accurate measurement while providing qualitative data through photointerpretation. The accuracy of the system allows it to be used to monitor coal refuse embankments, tailings dams, major earth dams, and natural slopes. Bibliographies of literature reviews in the area of past coal refuse embankment failures, monitoring instruments and methods, and photogrammetry are included.

Copper mineralization associated with minor molybdenum, silver, and gold occurs in a hydrothermally altered brecda within a granodiorite mass of Upper Permian age. A dyke system of rhyolite, dacite, and andesite forms plug-like bulges near the breccia and probably caused mineralization as a late stage effect.Base metal sulphides occur as disseminations, fracture and cavity fillings in the breccia. A pyritic halo in hydrothermally altered granodiorite surrounds the breccia and grades into unaltered granodiorite. Drilling during 1969 indicated the grade is subeconomic.

From presently available components a portable, rugged, reliable apparatus can be built which will be able to detect methane concentrations of 0.1% and lower in air. Sensitivity and design considerations of the apparatus are given. Ways to build even simpler and cheaper apparatus in the future are indicated. Traditionally the problem of detecting and monitoring the presence of dangerous gases present in small concentrations in air has been a difficult one. Whether canaries,' or sophisticated chemical or thermal conductivity methods are used, they seem to be either slow, cumbersome, or otherwise not completely satis factory. A seemingly natural way of gas detection is to measure the strength of absorption undergone by light of a wavelength that the gas to be detected absorbs. This method has been difficult to apply in view of the low power output over a narrow wavelength range in the infrared from traditional glow bar light sources. Besides, the apparatus to select such a narrow band of wavelengths is quite costly and complex. The use of a laser solves these problems simultaneously. Although a variety of lasers are available to detect a variety of gases (such as carbon monoxide or methane) whose early detection would be desirable, this paper deals exclusively with the use of lasers for methane detection. ABSORPTION SPECTRUM OF METHANE IN AIR The absorption spectrum of pure methane is very well known.2-4 There are four fundamental vibrations, all occurring in the infrared of which only two absorb strongly. They occur at 3.3 µ and 7.7 µ. The absorption spectrum is quite complicated due to the fact that the methane molecule can rotate in a variety of rotational quantum states. These rotational states are furthermore split by anharmonic forces such as the Coriolis force.4 When methane is present in air at atmospheric pressure, much of the very fine structure due to the anharmonic force is washed out since the pressure broadening is of the same magnitude as the splitting due to anharmonicity. For most of the spectrum at 3.3 µ, the rotational lines are typically separated by 0.01µ while the individual linewidth is 0.0001 µ. It is thus very important that the laser emit at a wavelength that coincides with one of these rotational lines. The use of micropiles is increasing for new construction and to retrofit distressed foundations in expansive soils. Typical micropiles in expansive soils have a lower section where the micropile grout is embedded in direct contact with the soil, and an upper section that is cased with rigid PVC pipe or other material to reduce the friction between the micropile and the surrounding expansive soil. In the upper cased section, the micropile grout is in direct contact with the inside of the casing. During construction, grout can flow upward into the annular space between the soil and the outside of the casing as the grout is tremied into the micropile. Thus, various interfaces may exist in a typical micropile, including soil-to-grout, grout-to-PVC, and soil-to-PVC. As the surrounding soil heaves, shear stresses are mobilized along the interfaces. The frictional characteristics of the interfaces are design variables that must be evaluated. For this study, an experimental program was conducted to evaluate the shear strength of the three interfaces listed above. Conventional direct shear testing was performed at a commercial testing laboratory. In addition, specialized testing was performed at Colorado State University (CSU). For the CSU testing, an interface testing protocol was designed using a modified triaxial cell to allow evaluation of the interface characteristics between rigid PVC and cylindrical specimens of grout or clay soil. It is shown that the shear strength of the soil-to-PVC and grout-to-PVC interfaces are similar, both of which are significantly lower than the shear strength of the soil-to-grout interface. This indicates that the use of a PVC casing in the upper portion of a micropile has a positive effect in reducing friction and the shear stresses resulting from expansive soil.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.Low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation at Ridge Mountain occurs within the Oligocene to Miocene volcanic rocks comprising andesite, porphyritic dacite and diatreme breccia. A diatreme breccia complex with a NE–SW elongated orientation covers an area of 3.0 × 1.7 km. Four main stages of mineralisation were identified, comprising: E–W- to NW–SE-trending quartz-chalcedony veins with disseminated pyrite, chalcopyrite and gold. N–S- to NNE–SSW-trending breccia veins with quartz matrix and disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. NE–SW-trending quartz and calcite veins with disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. ESE–WNW- to ENE–WSW-trending quartz veins with disseminated pyrite. This stage is only mineralisation that is hosted by diatreme breccia and clearly postdates.Quartz veins of the first, third and fourth stage are less than 2 m wide. Only breccia veins of the second stage are up to 10 m wide. Gold is present in all stages as microscopic inclusions in quartz and sporadically in pyrite. Macroscopic gold can be seen in the first and second mineralisation stages. Gold commonly occurs in association with sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite in the second and third mineralisation stages.CITATION:Kucera, J, 2015. The application of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) has been growing in the mining industry for the last 10 to 15 years. The major benefits supporting this trend are better energy efficiency, improved grinding capacity, and higher metal recovery in downstream processes such as heap leaching and flotation. In general there is limited quantitative knowledge on the true benefits of HPGRs relative to SAG mills in comminution, and about which situations one deals with better than the other. This paper will present a structure for comparison of the energy requirements for HPGR versus SAG mill considering complete circuits for comminution of precious and base metals hard ores. The work presented is from the design of four complete circuits based on ore data from two sites.

One of the most difficult areas in concession contracts in resource-rich developing countries is achieving an equitable balance between the interests of investors, host states and, increasingly, mine and near mine communities. While some countries in the Andean region have resorted to outright or creeping expropriation of natural resource contracts under the guise of resource nationalism, others such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), have claimed international best practice in the review (and setting aside) of important concession contracts.

Bulk materials handling systems are extensively used in the mining and minerals industry, where a fairly high incidence of structural failure is experienced, notwithstanding design compliance with appropriate standards. A number of case studies are explored to demonstrate how insufficient controls or protection systems have contributed to structural failures on mobile bulk handling equipment. The importance of design integration across engineering disciplines is highlighted. The revision of ISO 5049-1 (1994) is proposed to provide specific rules and guidelines pertaining to machine protection systems. It is further recommended that the structural design engineer of the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) fulfils a more prominent role during the final acceptance and handover of mobile bulk handling equipment, with specific reference to protection systems.

Because the cutting and polishing of stones are parts of the work of the Bureau of Mines in its study of rocks and minerals and in the determination of specimens sent in for identification, it was decided that a circular covering the subject in a general way would be of practical interest. As several books and periodicals give details of the problems in cutting and polishing, this report will not duplicate their information more than necessary. "In a previous publication, the depressant action of Mg above pH 10 on Cu-activated sphalerite was described (Lascelles et al., 2001). In the present communication, a second role, aggregation is introduced.Aggregation (i.e., the tendency of particles to cluster) is measured using settling rate and turbidity converted to an aggregation index (AI) where 0 corresponds to dispersed and 1 to aggregated. Surveys of Cu and Zn flotation stages at four concentrators showed the A1 increased significantly above pH 9. The metal ions identified in the process waters, principally Ca and Mg, were tested to determine which might be responsible. The presence of Mg was found to be the most important, 50 ppm Mg having a greater impact than 500 ppm Ca fkom pH 9 to 1 1. In one plant, poor repeatability in A1 was suspected to be related to varying Mg levels; doping with Mg significantly increased AI.In both aggregation and depression, therefore, the common feature is the impact of Mg at pH > 9. Over this pH range Mg forms a range of hydroxy species, including Mg(OH)2 precipitates. Suggested aggregation and depression mechanisms associated with these precipitates are introduced. Possible problems and opportunities arising from the findings are discussed.INTRODUCTIONProcess waters in flotation circuits contain a variety of metal ions that may introduce unwanted activation or depression. Two common metal ions are calcium and magnesium. Typical concentrations are in the range 50 ppm Mg and 500 ppm Ca (Marticorena et al., 1994, Basilio et al., 1996, Negeri et al., 1997, Nesset et al., 1998)."

The paper reviews aspects of the construction and performance of prestressed ground anchors installed in soils and weak rocks. Attention is focused on good practice for drilling, tendon fabrication and handling, grouting, stressing and testing. Regional variations - not always logically justified - are described. The performance of anchors in a variety of geological conditions is illustrated with reference to recent full scale test programs. 1. Introduction In the United States there has been steady growth in the use of prestressed anchors in materials other than competent or hard rock, in the years since their introduction in the late 1960's. This expansion has to a large extent been driven by specialty geotechnical contractors who both imported foreign developments and conducted their own basic researches, in locally prevailing conditions. With such data and experience, these engineers have had the confidence to promote "alternative solutions" for difficult earth support problems to receptive designers and owners. In turn, being engaged in the details of design and performance monitoring has given these parties the close exposure necessary for the real transfer and understanding of the technological concepts, and this knowledge has generated positive feedback for the contractors.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2008 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry, and presents analyses of exploration activities by the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for 2008: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia (Metals Economics Group, 2008a, b), and 2) information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2008 and compiled by the USGS. The MEG information summarizes planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2008, primarily for precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver) and base metals (copper, lead, nickel and zinc). MEG includes information on additional mineral commodities only where it is available. Information on uranium exploration was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007, although this information was not included in the USGS analysis. The MEG survey methodology was changed in 1999 to include companies with exploration budgets between $100,000 and $2.9 million, as well as those companies included in prior studies whose anticipated budgets were above $2.9 million. MEG estimates that its post-1999 surveys cover at least 90 percent of world nonferrous nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 2008 survey is reported by MEG to cover an estimated 95 percent. Companies that chose not to participate in the MEG study, private companies that do not publish data, and government-funded exploration activities make up the majority of the remaining 5 percent. MEG included 91 more companies in its 2008 survey than it did in 2007 USGS compilations of site data described here primarily include nonfuel minerals, with an emphasis on base metals, diamond and precious metals. Analyses are based on information provided by USGS mineral commodity and country specialists and by other USGS scientists, as well as industry contacts and trade journals.

An account is given of experimental apparatus for generating a short duration high velocity water jet and the effect of its impingement on various rock samples under air or water cover. The penetration was found to be highly dependent upon the rock structure; in general material with closely interlocking grains was resistant.The damage sustained by a stationary sample held close to the jet did not vary greatly whether the sample was in air or confined under a water layer; but when the sample was translated under the jet there was a marked increase in the damage sustained.Some consideration was given to the possible practical application of a water jet for deep hole drilling and an estimate made of the power requirements and transmission losses for such a system.

Twelve healthy, experienced underground cool miners performed lifting capacity tests in stooped and kneeling postures using a modified psychophysical procedure. Subjects adjusted weight in a lifting box to the maximum they could handle without undue fatigue in an asymmetric lifting task. Lifting periods were 20 min in duration and the frequency was 10 lifts/min. Tests were performed under a 48-in. roof that restricted the subject&apos;s posture. Psychophysical. physiological, and biomechanical dependent measures included the maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL), heart rate (HR), rate of oxygen consumption (VO2), ventilation volume rate (VF), respiratory exchange ratio (R), and integrated electromyography (EMG) of eight trunk muscles. Results indicated that the MAWL was significantly lower when kneeling than when stooped (p < 0.05), Furthermore, metabolic demands were greater in terms of HR (p < 0.005) mid VO2 (p < 0.05) when kneeling. Left and tight erectores spinae muscles exhibited increased EMG activity- in the kneeling posture (p < 0.001). It was concluded that psychophysical lifting capacity is decreased, while the metabolic stress and internal load on the spine are increased, in the kneeling posture. Results of this Bureau of Mines study indicate that it may be advisable to reduce the weight of materials that are handled repetitively in the kneeling posture.

Misiman society is matrilineal and despite relatively long contact with Europeans and mining, it retains its traditional consensus style of decision making. Many Misimans at least understand English, and this has encouraged comfortable communication between the people and the company (Misima Mines Pty Limited). Company care in monitoring the environment (mostly using Misiman staff), its policy of maintaining a largely Misiman workforce, and its emphasis on training and safety, have all created an environment compatible with Misiman society. In addition, the company has constructed and/or upgraded community facilities such as the airstrip, roads, the health centre, police station and schools, and has actively promoted local business endeavours. All these initiatives have been accomplished by constant dialogue with the largely Misiman workforce, and with the Misiman people, both before and during implementation. Constant, careful communication, using traditional Misiman consensus methods, appears to be the key to continued community acceptance of the project.

The foundations for the new South Viaduct Bridge in San Francisco were extremely challenging due to the requirement for very large and deep piles installed adjacent to historic structures. Drilled shafts up to 12? foot in diameter were constructed to a maximum depth of 200? feet in alluvial soils and Franciscan Bedrock using an oscillator system for the installation of the permanent steel casing. This paper provides an overview of the construction techniques, the equipment, and the challenges associated with constructing 12? foot diameter shafts on this very complex project in one of the nation?s nicest landscape setting.
