An experimental study has been made of the possible mechanisms for foam stability in the system CaO-SiO2-Cr2O3, where Cr2O3is the foaming agent. The degree of lowering of surface tension by Cr2O3 was determined at 1600 "C for high -silica melts. Measurements were also made of foam stability under standardized conditions. The results of the two sets of measurements then were correlated by applying the Gibbs and Marangoni theories of film elasticity. It was demonstrated that the Marangoni elasticity effect is probably the largest single contributor to foam stability, although the high uiscosity of' silicate melts makes some contribution in controlling the rate of drainage of liquid from bubble lamellae. ThE tendency of metallurgical slags to foam has frequently been observed during steel-refining operations. In the open-hearth furnace,this tendency is considered undesirable because it slows down the rate of heat transfer from the burners to the molten-metal bath. On the other hand, it is sometimes desirable to have a "foamy" slag in the basic oxygen converter.' A more effective blanket over the steel bath is made by a "foamy" slag, and loss in yield of metal due to splashing is minimized. In addition, a flush slag can be removed more easily in this condition. Since slag-foaming problems in the field have been attacked largely on an empirical basis, it appeared desirable to obtain a better basic understanding of the mechanism of foam stability. The experimental work was directed almost entirely toward the behavior of Cr2O3 as the foaming agent in CaO-SiO,-Cr2O3 melts. In the first stage of the investigation, the degree of lowering of surface tension by Cr2O3 was determined at 1600°C. The second stage consisted of measuring foam stabilities under standardized conditions. The two sets of experimental results then were correlated by applying various theories of foam stability. For convenience in interpreting the surface-tension and foam-stability results reported here, a portion of the CaO-SiO2-Cr2O3 phase diagram2 is reproduced in Fig. 1. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Surface-Tension Measurements. Very little information is available in the literature on the lowering of surface tension of slags by foaming agents. Kozakevitch 3 mentioned that the addition of 1.5 pct Cr2O3 lowered the surface tension of FeO slightly. In another system, some data on the lowering of surface tension of foaming slags by P2O5 were reported by Cooper and Kitchener.4 The technique used for the surface-tension measurements was the maximum bubble-pressure method,' using a single tube immersed to various depths in the melt. This method has been used extensively in high-temperature systems, such as in liquid metals, slags, and glasses.6,7 It has the advantage that the contact angle between the liquid and the tube material need not be known. Physical testing of rock support for rockbursting conditions has been carried out for over 40 years. A review of this testing shows that it has been mostly component?based, rather than actually testing support systems. Further, it is concluded that none of the testing is truly representative of rockburst loading in a similitude sense. Similitude conditions are not achievable, mainly because the real conditions in a rockburst event, such as seismic source location and magnitude, wave frequencies, amplitudes, and interactions, are not all known. Because such information is not available, and because the results of all testing carried out to date have not been able to define, for support design purposes, the capacity of support systems, ongoing physical testing of rockburst support systems is essential. It is essential that the test should simulate, or actually take place in, a supported rock excavation. A rock support system is a combination of individual support components that work together to retain and contain the rock. In doing this, the components are subjected to loading by the rock and to interactive loading between one component and another. It is necessary to prove the capacity of such rockburst support systems by subjecting them to severe loading, as in direct blasting. The direct blasting approach, pioneered more than 40 years ago, probably still provides the greatest validity as a significant test of rockburst support capabilities, even though it does not simulate a rockburst. Direct blast testing of rockburst support systems in a surface environment, such as in a quarry or on exposed rock cutting surfaces, could represent a practical development of the approach, facilitating the execution and monitoring of tests.

Two radioisotope techniques suitable for the rapid laboratory determination of the ash content of coal have been tested ou unwashed coal samples from four Australian coal seams. In one techniqne, measurements of backscattered 238Pu L X-rays and iron K X-rays from finely ground coal samples have been combined to determine ash content in uuwashed coals to ±0.5 weight per ce111 ash (ls) for three seams and 0.9 weight per cent ash for the fourth.The second technique, which involves measurements of the transmission by the coal of narrow beams of 241Am 60 keV and 123Ba 356 keV ? rays, requires less sample preparat ion. The ash was determined to within the range of 0.8 to 2.6 weight per cent for the four seams (unwashed coal). For washed coals, errors are expected to be < ±0.5 weight per cent ash.

Possible applications of cyclone thickeners for: (1) clarification of the washery water and, (2) recovery of fine coal from the plant bleed. The paper shows: (1) that it is possible to remove all particles including the very finest, from the circulating water, thus obtaining a closed water system and, (2) that reduction of the ash content of the solids of the plant bleed is feasible by means of cyclone thickeners. Performance data for different size cyclones is given in the form of graphs.

The influence of varying amounts of magnesia, silica, and alumina in iron ore sinter on its mineralogy, reducibility index (RI), reduction disintegration index (RDI), physical breakdown (AI and TI), and production properties (coke breeze rate) were examined. It was found that the mineralogy of iron sinter can more easily be predicted from its chemical composition than from the RI, RDI, AI or TI. Anticipating the consequence that varying amounts of MgO and SiO2would have on sinter properties is complex, and not necessarily predictable. High concentrations of Al2O3in the sinter result in high concentrations of the SFCA phase, but with drastically deteriorated properties. This study also confirmed that the form in which fluxes are added to the raw material sinter mixture affects the mineralogy and properties of the produced sinter.

The tensile behavior of copper foils prepared from rolled bulk material has been studied over the thickness range 2 to 53 , and for a range of pain sizes. For foils of comparable grain size, having the cube texture and tested along (100), yield strength increases with decreasing foil thickness t below -26p, with a corresponding decrease in ductility. Deformation occurs in the form of localized slip clusters distributed throughout the gage section. To the extent that the tensile strength (10 to 18 kg mm-) is unaffected by foil thickness, and that the foils possess fair ductility, the stress-strain behavior resembles that of bulk material rather than that of whiskers or evaporated films of comparable dimensions. The dependence of yield strength o on foil thickness t below -26p is of the form: oy = oo + kt-1/2. Possible explanations for the stress increase are considered based on 1) the dependence of active dislocation source length on foil dimensions, 2) the locking of surface sources, or the blocking of mobile sources at the surface due to surface film. It is now well-established that filamentary whiskers of many materials show exceptionally high strength compared with bulk crystals.'-11 As the diameter of the whiskers decreases to -1, the observed fracture strength approaches, and in certain cases exceeds, the calculated shear stress for the nucleation of slip in a perfect crystal.' In general, the stress-strain curve is entirely elastic, with strains at fracture approaching 1 pct. Similarly, thin films12-24 of evaporated or electrodeposi-ted material have been shown to possess tensile strengths three to seven times that of bulk material, with total strains at fracture -1 to 2 pct. In the present study, attention has been directed to the room-temperature tensile behavior of thin foils of copper over the thickness range 2 to 53, prepared from rolled bulk material. Yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, elongation to fracture, and work-hardening behavior are measured as a function of grain size and foil thickness. Structurally such foils are superior to either evaporated or electrodeposited films, and in the recrystallized condition exhibit considerable ductility. Apart from preliminary work by Sumino and Yamamoto25 on the work-hardening behavior of rolled and recrystallized copper foils, no systematic tensile studies have been carried out on material of this form. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile specimens were prepared from 99.995 pct purity rolled copper foils of thickness 2, 6, 12, 26, and 53, obtained from the Hamilton Watch Co., Lancaster, Pa. Irrespective of specimen shape, it is necessary to use tensile foils with edges free from notches or tears. To this end, any form of cutting operation was excluded, and the tensile foils prepared using a photoengraving process, the details of which are described elsewhere.26 Since tensile data are required under conditions of uni-axial stress, the specimen shape is extremely important. Ideally, the foil should be infinitely long, allowing a gradual taper from the grip area to the gage section; however, from a practical standpoint, long foils are easily damaged during testing. A modified tensile specimen was therefore selected having a parallel gage section 1.25 by 0.20 in. with a tapered shoulder section increasing to 0.5 in. at the grips, and an over-all length between grips of 4 in., Fig. 1. In practically all tests, these foils fractured within the parallel gage section. By approximating the foil contour (Fig. 1) to a hyperbola it is possible to analyze the stress distribution in the tensile foil using two-dimensional elasticity

In 1801, Hatchett discovered the oxide of a new element while he was examining a heavy black mineral from Haddam, America, which had been presented to the British Museum. He named the mineral Columbite and the metal Columbium. A year later a Swedish investigator, Eckeberg, while working with a new mineral resembling columbite-yttrotantalite discovered a new element, to which he gave the name of tantalum.In 1844, Rose announced the existence of two new elements in a sample of columbite from Bodenmais. One was similar to Eckeberg's tantalum and the other was called Niobium. Wollaston, in 1909, attempted to show experimentally that columbium and the tantalum were identical, but it was soon proved that they were two separate elements. Subsequently a number of investigatiors found other "new elements" in tantalum and columbium bearing ores, but these were shown to be mixtures of the twin metals.Since Hatchett's Columbium and Rose's Niobium are identical, it is more fitting to use the name assigned to this element by the earlier investigator. However, the term niobium is still retained in Germany and England.The separation of tantalum and columbium has been one of the major problems for analytical chemists since the discovery of the two elements and it is only in recent years that tantalum of a high degree of purity has been produced. High purity columbium metal is probably still to be obtained.Until 1903 tantalum was merely a laboratory curiosity, but about this time its use in incandescent electric light bulb filaments was discovered. Eight years later it was replaced by tungsten, which was better and cheaper. For a time the electrolytic valve action of tantalum was used in the charging of storage batteries, but the chief uses of the metals' to-day are for corrosion resistant apparatus, in vacuum tubes and as carbides in the manufacture of hard cutting and shaping tools.Most of the recent work on the metals has been done by C. W. Balke, in America. Tantalum has been studied more than columbium. OCCURRENCE OF TANTALUM AND COLUMBIUMI. Excavation bracing is a special structural system. It is built from the top down. The design is controlled by the economical construction of another structure as well as by the movement of the ground beyond the limits of its construction. It serves a number of purposes, all subordinate to the construction of the principal structure. Despite its importance, bracing design and construction is frequently overlooked in project planning, causing delays and expensive changes. Thoughtful planning, good design and resourceful, innovative construction can improve construction safety and save time and money.

Kidd Mine in Northern Ontario is now producing from Stage 1 of the Mine D expansion project ? mining between 2100 m and 2700 m below surface. Planning for Stage 2 of the Mine D project is already well advanced and will see the mine extended potentially to 3100 m below the surface. To ensure adequate ventilation is maintained at such depths, two large axial fans have been installed on the 6000 Level (1800 m below surface) as exhaust booster fans to operate in series with the surface exhaust fans. The Kidd Mine 6000 Level Booster Fans are a unique installation with unique and often unexpected challenges. These challenges have been met and attacked through the combined efforts of mine and fan manufacturer personnel with a common focus.

Lost foam casting patterns are foamed polystyrene shapes glued together into the shape of the part to be cast and are coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably land-filled. In this study, a process is developed for the recovery of foamed polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and density separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene.

The town of Greenwich, CT, an exclusive suburb of New York City awarded several contracts for the installation of sanitary sewer in the North Mianus section of town. The Valley Road section was the most challenging from a rock excavation standpoint. The cut was up to 14 ft (4.25m), with adjacent utilities [20 in. (500mm) water, 6 in. (150mm) water and 8 in. (200mm) gas] located to within 5 ft. (1.5m) of the proposed sewer trench. Rock types varied but were ultra metamorphic in nature, ranging from quartzites, granite gneiss and various types of migmatities.

En este trabajo se explican los controles automáticos desarrollados (In-House) e implementados en el circuito de Molienda de Compañía Minera Antamina, el cual abarca Molinos SAG, de Bolas y los Hidrociclones respectivos. Los controles implementados son basados en el Control por Lógica Fuzzy y las Bandas de Bollinger; así mismo se indican los criterios en el diseño de los controladores y las variables del proceso que se han tomado para la implementación donde se controla un indicador de distancia del centro de masa de la carga respecto al centro del molino de Bolas. Asimismo, se muestra el impacto positivo logrado con la estabilización del circuito.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has investigated engineering noise controls to reduce sound levels in cabs on air-rotary drill rigs. A recent investigation revealed that some drillers are exposed to A-weighted sound levels exceeding 85 dB even though a cab is used. NIOSH studied the in-cab sound levels of one such rig. First, preliminary tests were conducted in a controlled environment using accelerometers and microphones with spectral analysis to identify the dominant noise sources for in-cab sound levels. The results indicate that vibration transmitted from multiple hydraulic pumps to the control panel produces a dominant spike in the sound level spectrum in the 400 Hz 1/3-octave band. Next, field tests were performed in a production environment to evaluate noise controls to reduce in-cab sound levels. It was found that utilizing hydraulic noise suppressors reduces the structure-borne noise transmitted to the control panel. Further, using hydraulic noise suppressors and enhancing soundproofing reduced the in-cab A-weighted sound levels by as much as 4 dB.

SAG mill liner development draws primarily on practical experience from SAG milling operations supported by computer-based modeling of charge motion in SAG mills and on established good design practice. Liner design needs to respond to the process aspects of mill liner action that are critical to good SAG mill performance, i.e., the impact of shell liners on the grinding action and of grates and pulp lifters on pulp discharge. In recent years, the trend in large SAG mills has been to use wide-spaced shell lifters with large lifter face angles, primarily to reduce packing and ball/liner damage, and to use larger, hence fewer, mill liner parts to reduce downtime at liner change-outs.

Many mining operations rely on retention bulkheads to provide a barrier between impounded water and active mine workings. However, bulkhead failures can cause catastrophic flooding that puts the underground workforce at risk. Underground observations and evaluations of existing bulkheads indicate that a systems approach is required when building an underground water or slurry retention system. In addition to engineering the bulkhead, the designer must ensure the quality control of materials and workmanship of the bulkhead, the reaction of the mine strata when exposed to water under pressure, and methods to monitor the performance of the retention system. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), with the assistance of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), conducted an extensive review of bulkhead permits submitted to the MSHA Technical Support office in Bruceton, PA. In addition, the researchers visited accessible bulkhead installations at undeground mining operations to gather information related to construction practices, maintenance issues, and monitoring and emergency response procedures. Several key items were identified that must be considered when permitting the installation of an underground fluid retention system.

Ore sorting is a high capacity, low cost method of pre concentrating ores and in some cases of producing a marketable concentrate. In most cases it is applied to run of mine material, immediately after primary crushing and screening in sizes ranging from 10 mm to 150 mm. Recent developments in bulk sorting of friable uranium deposits have resulted in machines capable of handling fine materials with sensing and separation being achieved on a zone by zone basis. Modern ore sorting machines rely on the synchronous operation of four internal subsystems, feed presentation, sensing, data processing and separation. A variety of different sub systems is available which can be combined in various forms to produce sorters capable of handling a wide variety of mineral types. The benefits in using ore sorting cover a wide range of situations and are applicable to both established mines as well as new mining ventures. Reduced operating costs, increased productivity, capital savings, energy and resource conservation and environmental issues are all part of the reason why ore sorting is finding rapid acceptance in today's mining industry. The suitability of different ore types for pre-concentration using anyone of the variety of ore sorting systems can be quickly established using computer based techniques which require only small samples of the materials under investigation.

"Mining is an important part of the economy of Namibia. In 2016, 11.1 percent of the GDP was the result of mining activities with 22 active mines (The Chamber of Mines of Namibia, 2016). Only one of them consists of an underground mining operation.The global annual production of fluorspar is approximately 5.4 to 6.3 Mt (6 to 7 million st) (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2017). Okorusu has produced on average about 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) in recent years (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2015).The Okorusu Mine is Namibia’s only fluorspar mine. Fluorspar was mined in an openpit mine with four individual pits (A-D) since 1980. In 2014, the mine closed due to the increased stripping ratio and beneficiation problems. The mine assets were bought by Gecko Namibia. Currently, Gecko uses parts of the processing plant for beneficiation of graphite from a neighboring mine. Figure 1 shows a panoramic view with the four pits and the mine village.The intent is to develop a concept for the further underground development of the mine. There are still about 6.3 Mt (7 million st) of measured resources left in the deposit, with an average grade of 27.5 percent CaF2. This study focuses on the underground mine design. The above-ground plant and facilities are considered as remaining unchanged.For solving the task to design the mine, a site visit for data collecting was conducted. Resource estimations were calculated based on existing drill data, and consequently, block models were created. The development of the mine design included the selection of the most suitable mining method, mining technology and mine organization. Moreover, some economic considerations are pointed out, followed by a profitability assessment."

This article introduces a computer model, which emphasizes panel design for draglines deployed in direct side-casting mode. The study covers flat and inclined coal-seam conditions with the dragline operating along the strike-line. Two casting methods are embedded in the model: material is placed in the open set adjacent to the one on which the dragline is located (the DNS method) and material is placed in the open set adjacent to the one the dragline excavates (the DND method). While in the first method the unproductive walking time is reduced as the set is enlarged, in the second method the cycle time is lessened as the dragline swings along an acute angle. The side-casting model is shaped so as to provide several panel configurations instead of a single one to conform to the characteristics for an opencast mine. This is achieved by assigning the pit width an interval of values ranging from a minimum to a maximum. The model includes solutions to other critical design parameters such as: set length, swing angles at key cut and main cut positions, and required dragline reach at key cut and main cut positions. The model outcomes reveal the following: the stripping operation is largely affected when the coal-seam is inclined. The downhill spoiling mode should be applied wherever possible. The DNS pattern allows wider pit width intervals as well as longer sets and longer reaches.
