The Hiddenite District of Alexander County, NC has produced some of the world?s finest large emeralds since the first one was discovered 134 years ago. In fact, North America?s largest emeralds come from the district, making this one of the continent?s most unique gem deposits. In addition to emeralds, the Hiddenite District is also famous as the discovery site for the rare spodumene mineral hiddenite, first identified in 1881. Nowhere else in the world do these two minerals naturally occur together. The emeralds are a unique color variety of beryl (Al2Be3Si6O18) with trace amounts of Cr+3 and V+3 substituting for Al+3. The hiddenite (LiAlSi2O6) crystals also exhibit emerald green color due to traces of chromium. Consisting of three large deposits and numerous prospects, the district encompasses an area of 10 km2 (4 sq miles) centered on the small town of Hiddenite. Operations at the Adams, Ellis and North American Emerald Mines properties have been productive at irregular intervals since the 1880s. Currently, only the North American Emerald Mines property is being mined on a regular basis. Recent activity there has exposed a 3-hm2 (7.4-acre) pit with depths of 25 m (82 ft) that provides the best exposures of unweathered bedrock seen in the district in more than 120 years. Although no official records exist, public and private data indicate that the production of the entire Hiddenite District from 1880 to 2007 is about 70,000 carats of emerald and 20,000 carats of hiddenite. The bulk of the emeralds came from the North American Emerald Mine property (NAEM, formerly known as the Rist Mine) where sustained mining replaced the previous sporadic prospecting in 2000.

Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

Education in Australia now has to respond to a very wide political and policy agenda. The political emphasis is upon increasing participation and retention rates with a view to greater graduation rates in `high-tech' disciplines. There is an implied linkage between `education' and `economic well-being'. Our argument is that equalitarianism in education tends towards mediocrity. In this context many Geoscience educators view the future with pessimism. The argument is that science has been `sold short' and needs revitalising. We contend that Geoscience coursework should be a feature of both secondary and tertiary education in Australia. To this end we propose six policy initiatives to increase the content of Geoscience in education programmes.

Heavy mineral deposits are becoming more complex in terms of their compositional variation, particle mineralogy and size distributions, and present challenges for the operation of separation equipment to achieve the required grades and recoveries. Changes in equipment design and concepts potentially provide new opportunities for the beneficiation of heavy mineral sands deposits. The development of a framework for the fundamental understanding of separator performance issues is a first step to develop new machines. This paper will present a first step analysis of electro-static and magnetic separation machines with their application to real separation scenarios.

Underground coal mining under massive sandstone can present significant challenges if the roof behavior is not well understood. This paper presents a classic cantilever bending/flexing behavior of a longwall tailgate roof caused by the weighting of structurally massive sandstone strata. Nineteen crosscuts of a longwall tailgate under massive sandstone were instrumented with position transducers connected to a data-logger to monitor roof convergence as the longwall face approached. During the monitoring program, an unusual tailgate roof divergence (uplift) was recorded. This roof behavior contradicts expected norm of roof convergence when the longwall is influenced by periodic weighting. The recorded roof movement data indicated that the roof divergence started well ahead of the longwall face. The most inby position transducer started recording progressive roof divergence when the longwall face was approximately 643 feet away. Very gradual roof convergence did not begin until the longwall face got to within 300 feet of the transducer. Recording of accelerated convergence only started after a massive caving event with the face within 280 feet of the recording transducer.

The igneous intrusions in SE Papua New Guinea are part of a sub-volcanic to plutonic, high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic suite. High-K andesitic to dacitic intrusives on Misima and Woodlark Islands, and shoshonitic intrusives in Milne Bay and the eastern Owen Stanley Ranges are related to late Cenozoic andesitic volcanism. Both suites are associated with epithermal Au-Ag deposits and weak porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. All significant alluvial and lode gold occurrences in the region are spatially related to intrusions. Intrusions in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands and near Mt Suckling are core plutons related to basement doming, and appear to have no association with either volcanism or hydrothermal mineralisation. The core plutons are not petrochemi:ally distinct from the volcano-re:-ed Intrusions.

Considerable improvements in diamond drilling equipment have been made since the early 1950s. A recent drilling programme, however, at Williamtown, near Newcastle, carried out by the Joint Coal Board on behalf of the Electricity Commission of New South Wales, emphasized deficiencies in existing equipment when particularly diflkult coring conditions were encountered.Spurred by unacceptably low recoveries in coal seams in this area, the Joint Coal Board devised and developed, with the assistance of the Electricitv Commission, a new typc core lifter and a special 26 ft triple tube core barrel, designed to operate in conjunction with it in bad coring conditions.The core lifter, whieh is propped open clear of incoming core during drilling, is activated by fluid impulses generated inside the core barrel. It can be used with double tube barrels when drilling firm rocks whichdo not change diameter by compaction inside the barrel.Softer rocks. such as clayey types, require the use of a rriple tube barrel.Results from testing carried out to date in difficult areas in New South Wales coalfields have shown that greatly improved results can be obtained with the new equipment. Although developed essentially for coaldrilling, the new core lifter and barrel could be adapted to other fields of diamond drilling. Even in areas where no great coring difficulty is encountered the cost advantage deriving from the greatly inereased life of the core lifter and the adaptor in which it is housed could justify its use.

"This paper describes mineral processing test work on drill core samples from an ilmenite deposit in Terrebonne County just north of Montreal.Mineralogical examination showed that the intimate associa¬tion between ilmenite and hematite precluded their separation. The maximum concentrate grade was therefore limited to 22.9% Ti. Liberation of gangue from the hemo-ilmenite grains occurred around 400 µm, a size which proved to be too coarse for recovery by flotation.Other physical separation techniques, such as elec¬trodynamic, magnetic and jigging, were tried in order to take advantage of the relatively coarse liberation size. An all-flotation procedure and a combination of jigging and flotation yielded similar separations.IntroductionInco Metals Company, through its subsidiary Canico, optioned an ilmenite deposit in Terrebonne County, just north of Montreal, and conducted a drilling campaign to confirm previous geological assessments of the deposit and to provide core samples for mineralogical study. Parts of these core samples were used for mineral processing studies, which will be described in this report. The objective was to identify suitable upgrading procedures, to determine the optimum combination of concentrate grade and recovery, and to provide suitable batches of concentrate for further treatment."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the tin deposits of the Cape Mountain area during July and August 1962 to test the effectiveness of detrital-cover sampling in permafrost areas as a relatively cheap and simple means of guiding mine development and exploration. Results indicate that systematic detrita1-cover sampling can be used effectively to delineate obscure deposits with sufficient accuracy to permit sampling with a minimum of trenching or drilling. Extensions of known outcroppings were traced in sufficient detail to guide lode sampling and several previously unknown tin-bearing lodes were found and sampled. Lode sampling was limited to the minimum needed to establish the reliability of detrital-cover sampling results. The results of previous lode and placer investigations are summarized and detrital-cover sampling methods and results are described in detail.

Shallow seam coal field has the largest coal reserve in China. Mining in shallow depth causes serious problems. One of them is subsurface dewatering. In this paper, the physical simulating model was performed to study overburden movement and aquiclude stability in the shallow seam mining of Yushuwan coal field, China. According to the characteristic of clay aquiclude in the overburden, the proper simulation materials and proportions of mixture for simulating the plastic clay aquiclude layers and brittle bedrock layers were determined by the stress-strain tests. The physical simulating model was carried out to simulate the failure and caving process of the roof and overburden. Based on the simulating tests, it was found that the movement of clay aquiclude follows the movement of the underlying bedrock layers. The basic caving mechanism of the overburden roof strata was also presented. The tests also showed that the best way to control the stability of aquiclude is to reduce the subsiding gradient Ts. This research provides a foundation for further study on mining dewatering and water conservation.

In 2001, at the CIM AGM in Quebec, a paper discussing poor ground conditions in a newly opened area at Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operation?s, suggested load transfer around old workings as a possible reason for the early room failure. High closure rates are expected in deeper regions however the rapid failure of walls immediately behind the face resulted in protective guards being mounted on and behind the borer. The high closure and early rib failure continued well past any reasonable distance to be explained by load transfer around old workings and investigations continued into possible reasons other than simply depth. Detailed investigations into the mineralogy and crystal fabric of the ore zone provided one possibility, which combined with a changed borer cutting profile are now believed to have contributed greatly to the poor conditions.

"As part of a larger investigation on generation of fines from mining activities and their effect on downstream operations, ore samples from Onaping area stockpiles of Falconbridge Ltd were studied. Batch flotation tests were conducted on the stockpile samples and fresh ore samples to explore the effect of stockpiling on grade-recovery performance. Head grade and particle size distribution of the samples from stockpiles were adjusted so that the samples compared are similar to each other. In additional tests, fresh ore samples were blended with stockpile samples at various percentages, representing 27.4, 50.2 and 81.5% of stockpile samples.The samples from stockpiles produced inferior nickel grade-recovery curves compared to fresh ore. The poorer grade-recovery performance was attributable to two factors. First, a significant dilution effect was observed due to the nearly complete flotation of pyrrhotite. Secondly, while pyrrhotite from stockpiled ore became highly floatable, the same stockpiling conditions caused nickel losses that were attributable to non-floatability of some pentlandite.In the case of blending, there was generally insignificant difference in the nickel grade-recovery between fresh and blended samples when the blending cases involved 27.4 and 50.2% stockpile samples. However, an increase in pyrrhotite recovery was observed for both blending cases. At 81.5% blending case, degraded grade-recovery was significant primarily due to the nearly complete flotation of pyrrhotite. There was a small, but noticeable amount of nickel loss for this case. However, for lower ratios of blending this loss was negligible.The increase in pyrrhotite recovery was partly attributed to its activation by Cu and Ni ions. Formation of a significant amount of elemental sulphur was also apparent from analysis of stockpiled samples. It can be concluded that pyrrhotite is mildly oxidized under stockpiling conditions while part of the pentlandite undergoes a more severe oxidation."

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe purpose of this report, which is the third of a. series on the coal mines of the Western States, is to give the findings of a study of the causes and methods of prevention of accidents from falls of root and coal in the mines of Lincoln County, Wyo. The three mines covered in this report, referred to as A. B. and C, account- for 9 per cent of the coal production in the county and nearly 9 per cent of the State's total production. For comparative purposes some statistical data are presented bearing upon the relation of injuries to their causes, to tonnage produced, to men employed, to days worked, and to days lost as the result of injuries.FATALITIES IN WYOMINGTo show the necessity for this study, Table 1 given the fatalities that occurred during 1928 in the bituminous—coal mines of the United States, of the State of Wyoming of Lincoln County, and in Mines A, B, and C, followed by a brief description of the Kemmerer coal dis-trict, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining timbering for roof support, roof testing, and supervision. In an extremely competitive mining industry, onsite experience is a big advantage. Mining education at the universities is mostly focused on theoretical studies without a possibility of practical training in mining sites. Hence, experimental mines suitable for practical education are needed to provide a platform for systematic research and education in industrial scale and for training in real mining conditions. Yet, this kind of mine sites is rare worldwide. Thus, a new educational research project, namely MINETRAIN is introduced in this paper evaluating the transition of the Pyhäsalmi mine in Central Finland from an active base metal mine to a research, educational and training underground facility. The uniqueness of MINETRAIN compared to other test mine programs is that the existing state‐of‐art infrastructure in Pyhäsalmi enables research and training facilities among all disciplines related to the overall mine value chain. Though all the above sound interesting in the context of research and education purposes, in practice Pyhäsalmi will have to become an experimental mine that can be sustainable in the future. Accordingly, a prefeasibility study is being conducted and some preliminary results are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION Despite being a field of studies that requires practical knowledge and experience, mining engineering education follows the same pattern in most mining universities around the world; consisting of theoretical courses and laboratory-based practical modules (Mischo, 2015). The possibility of having practical training in real mining conditions on actual mine sites or processing plants is limited to none, while the only contact that undergraduate students have with mining operations during their time of studies is usually through short-time internships or visits in the context of educational trips. Yet, real integration between universities and the mining industry may be scarce, which does not help students to observe the actual processes, and thus understand the whole picture of mining operations. Indirect practical training is also possible nowadays that technology is shifting from mechanical to digital, and the use of virtual reality -in the context of Mining 4.0- can provide additional experience to the learning process. However, virtual reality is limited to the visual impression and is also limited in actions (Binder et al, 2018). In any case, when there is not a proper pragmatic view of how the different disciplines link to each other and especially if there is a lack of communication, unfortunately the results could be seen at a later stage in the mines as a poor performance of professionals and workers. Another major challenge for educating specialists in the mining sector is that experimental mines suitable for practical education, where the skills and know-how could be developed and/or enhanced are rare worldwide. Such research and educational (R&E) facilities are practically former metal ore mines that have been transformed into experimental sites. Besides being limited in number, not all facilities of this kind serve both a research and educational purpose.

In Alaska?s southwest corner, in the Bristol Bay region, 476 holes have been drilled to help define the size of the Pebble Project. The results indicate that the deposit holds close to 32 Mt (72 billion lbs) of copper and 2.9 Gt (94 million oz) of gold. The Pebble Partnership, an Alaskan limited partnership of Anglo American and Northern Dynasty Minerals, owns the project that consists of two world-class mineral deposits. Currently in the prefeasibility and prepermitting stage of development, the Pebble Project is one of the largest and highest profile exploration projects in North America. History The Pebble West Project was originally discovered in 1988 by Cominco (now Teck Cominco). Drilling programs in 1997 defined a near-surface mineral deposit of 1 Gt (1.01 billion st). Minerals found included copper, gold and molybdenum. Northern Dynasty Minerals acquired the property in 2001 and, by 2005, it had confirmed a measured and indicated resource of 4.1 Gt (4.5 billion st) containing 1.2 kt (42.1 million oz) of gold, 11.2 Mt (24.7 billion lbs) of copper and 612 kt (1.35 billion lbs) of molybdenum and additional silver. By September 2005, Pebble East, a deeper, but richer deposit had been found. Drill data by the end of 2005 confirmed a 3.4-Gt (3.7-billion st) inferred resource containing 19 Mt (42.6 billion lbs) of copper, 1.2 Mt (39.6 million oz) of gold and 1.2 Mt (2.7 billion lbs) of molybdenum.

The spillage of liquid diethyl ether in rooms at floor level and 3 feet above the floor resulted in flammable vapor-air mixtures in the immediate vicinity of the exposed liquido The liquid temperature was found to decrease by as much as 35° C., with a resultant decrease in vaporization rate. A search of the literature yielded numerous references to unstable peroxide (residue) formed by the autoxidation of ether. Such residues appear to constitute an explosion hazard in the condensed state.

Bauxite was first discovered in Tennessee, at Chattanooga, in 1906, during the construction of' the McCallie Street tunnel through Missionary Ridge. Several years later, bauxite was found in sinking a well on the Perry or Isabella Stewart property. These and other deposits furnished a substantial tonnage for the abrasive and chemical industries during the years 1906 to, 1920. The search for domestic sources of war material prompted by World War II brought the Tennessee bauxite deposits to the attention of the Bureau of Mines. During the summer of 1942, James S. Cullison and E. Godwin, geologists of the United states Geological Survey, made a survey of the bauxite deposits of the area. In August 1942, Harold B. Ewoldt, a Bureau of Mines engineer, accompanied by the Geological Survey party visited the area and a drilling program was prepared. Drilling was started in November 1942 and continued until March 1943. A total of 2,519.5 feet in 38 holes was drilled on three properties.
