The respect of EPB reference pressure during TBM advance and hyperbaric activities, the complete and effective filling of the annular gap between tunnel lining extrados and the excavation section and a well organized monitoring system, to control surface settlements and ground distortion, are items of utmost importance in EPB tunnelling process. The paper describes how these concepts have been applied while excavating in the difficult underground conditions found at Sao Paulo (Brazil) during the execution of the Sao Paulo Metro Line 4-Lot 1. In this project, the annular gap has been filled by two components type, cement grouting. The back feed of the extensive monitoring campaign carried out to check the surface settlements during the excavation and hyperbaric maintenance operations will also be described in the paper.

Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Operating problems Contributing factors toward relatively low productivity and high costs were the conditions of the track haulage, conveyor, and ventilation systems. This paper constitutes the third progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines. It presents comparative costs of drilling with conventional and detachable bits and describes the operating practice in rock drilling and the reconditioning of drill steel and bits at 10 mines not discussed in previous reports.3/ ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This report has been prepared with the assistance and cooperation of the officials and staff members at the mines visited. Increasing pressure from State and Federal agencies to mitigate mining-induced subsidence damage to overlying structures has presented a unique problem to the coal industry in the western United States. Because sandstone escarpments are an environmental issue, millions of tons of coal reserves that underlie these escarpments risk being classified as unminable by regulatory agencies. At this time, the effect of subsidence on escarpments has not been well documented or characterized. The Bureau of Mines is using numerical modeling techniques to analyze escarpment response to longwall mining. Two- and three-dimensional finite element models have been constructed for a study area near Price, Utah, where longwall panels were mined near an escarpment. This status report includes preliminary results showing that the pattern of subsidence surrounding the escarpment can be simulated through numerical modeling. Models that include such structural details as joint and fracture patterns will better simulate subsidence patterns .and magnitude. By locating longwall panels strategically in relation to the escarpment, stability may be preserved throughout the mining process. Numerical modeling provides a method to analyze relatively quickly the effects of longwall panel location and resulting subsidence on escarpment stability. The goal is to provide a relatively accurate predictive tool for mine planning to determine if escarpment stability can be maintained while maximizing extraction of the coal reserves.

Spodumene was recovered from pegmatite by flotation in laboratory and pilot-plant tests using an anionic collector emulsion. A similar process applied to beryl pegmatite gave encouraging results.INTRODUCTIONOver the past two decades lithium and beryllium have aroused increasing interest in the metallurgical world. Both these light metals have potential uses in nuclear shielding and cooling and in lightweight alloys, and there is a growing demand for lithium chemicals for ceramics, air conditioning and lubricants. The use, technology and history of lithium has been surveyed by Schreck (1961).For many years, the only commercial production of lithium and beryllium was from pegmatite deposits amenable to hand cobbing. The most important minerals of these ores are spodumene and beryl, which are respectively lithium aluminium silicate and beryllium aluminium silicate. Norman and Gieseke (1940) investigated the treatment of lithium ores by froth flotation. The process of flotation of the pegmatite constituents away from the spodumene was applied commercially in 1951, and the operation has been described by Goter, Rainey and Hudspeth (1953). Subsequently, the flotation of the spodumene from the pegmatite was studied by Munson and Clark (1955) and Browning and McVay (1961), and this method has superceded the reverse flotation process commercially. The Brewer Gold Mine is an open-pit, heap leach operation that processes about 122 kt/m (135,000 stpm). The mine is operated by Brewer Gold Inc., a subsidiary of Westmont Mining Inc., and is located near Jefferson, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Columbia, SC (Fig. 1). All of the ore to date has been produced from a breccia body of hydrothermal origin and a related smaller body of fault-controlled ore, known as the B-6. Reserves at the time the mine commenced production were 4.6 Mt (5.1 million st) grading 1.4 g/t (0.042 oz per st) gold. History Although some reports of a pre-Revolution War shaft at the Brewer are in the literature (Lieber, 1856, Nitze and Wilkens, 1897), gold was first produced in earnest from the Brewer Mine in 1828. Production occurred primarily from placer deposits south of the present mine workings. Lieber noted in 1856 that “every branch, gulch, ravine or even declivity of the main hill has been washed and rewashed.”

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to assess the impact of a directional water spray system on a unique single inlet dust scrubber on a low-profile mining machine. Tests were conducted in a full-scale model mine using a continuous mining machine. Tracer gas was introduced at the face and concentrations of the tracer gas were monitored at the face and in the return. Various parameters tested included mining position, depth of cut, brattice setback, and combinations of scrubber, and directional or symmetrical sprays. Results indicated that either water spray configuration improved the ventilation effectiveness of the scrubber by a factor of 2 to 3. Average face ventilation effectiveness (FVE) values for all testing of the scrubber and directional sprays were 0.95, versus 0.37 for a standard 20-ft blowing curtain without sprays. No FVE values were less than the standard 20-ft blowing results.

Records show that much of the lead produced in the Upper Mississippi Valley lead-zinc field was taken from natural openings along crevice systems at shallow horizons or at the surface. During the early history of the district, the shallow deposits were worked intensively; but in recent years the production of lead, except as a byproduct of deeper mining for zinc ores, has not been significant. Considering the methods of early mining, the character of mineralization, and the fact that galena can still be found on the surface of the old digging areas, it was reasoned that enough mineralization might remain on and above bedrock to permit, through the use of modern equipment and methods, economical re-treatment of surface material in the digging areas.

Unplanned dilution and ore loss directly influence not only the productivity of underground stopes, but also the profitability of the entire mining process. Stope dilution is a result of complex interactions between a number of factors, and cannot be predicted prior to mining. In this study, unplanned dilution and ore loss prediction models were established using multiple linear and nonlinear regression analysis (MLRA and MNRA), as well as an artificial neural network (ANN) method based on 1067 datasets with ten causative factors from three underground longhole stoping mines in Western Australia. Models were established for individual mines, as well as a general model that includes all of the mine data-sets. The correlation coefficient (R) was used to evaluate the methods, and the values for MLRA, MNRA, and ANN compared with the general model were 0.419, 0.438, and 0.719, respectively. Considering that the current unplanned dilution and ore loss prediction for the mines investigated yielded an R of 0.088, the ANN model results are noteworthy. The proposed ANN model can be used directly as a practical tool to predict unplanned dilution and ore loss in mines, which will not only enhance productivity, but will also be beneficial for stope planning and design.

The east span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (SFOBB), which is one of the most heavily traveled bridges in the world, will be replaced due to seismic safety concerns. The majority of the new bridge will be founded on large-diameter (1.8 to 2.5 meters), approximately 60- to 100-meter-long pile foundations The large-diameter steel pipe piles and soil conditions are similar to those used/encountered in many offshore structures. Thus, the design methods used are based on site-specific modifications to the procedures recommended by the American Petroleum Institute rather than the conventional procedures that have been formulated and used for the design of much smaller piles. Pile foundations will experience their maximum loads during the design earthquake. For the Safety Evaluation Earthquake, tension loads of up to approximately 80 to 90 meganewtons (MN) and compression loads of up to approximately 120 to 140 MN were calculated. Due to the economic importance of the SFOBB and the consequences of catastrophic failure in both economic and human terms, the design and analysis of the pile foundations supporting the bridge consider a number of aspects of pile-soil behavior that are normally ignored. Those aspects include: 1) the effects of consolidation and setup, 2) the behavior under dynamic loading, 3) the losses of resistance under cyclic loading, and 4) the load-settlement behavior of the piles under severe cyclic loading conditions. Since the treatment of complex aspects of pile foundation behavior is not codified in any guiding documents, several project-specific methods were developed for design and analysis of the foundation piles.

The construction, commissioning and operation of a continuous pilot-scale selective agglomeration (oil agglomeration) unit are described. This plant has been used to recover fine coal from an effluent stream that is produced by a jig plant which scalps the coal from a New South Wales (Australia) colliery. The reject slurry is extremely fine (66.5% minus 53 um) and has an ash content of approximately 40%. The pilot plant can treat up to 0.3 tonne/h of this slurry, producing average product ashes as low as 9.1% and tailings ashes greater than 80%. The average yield observed was62%, which corresponded to a recovery of coal material of 88%. The operation of this pilot plant yielded data that enabled an economic assessment of this type of processing to be carried out. This study showed that selective agglomeration is an economically viable process for eliminating the substantial losses of coal to tailings ponds and minimizing consequent disposal and environmental problems. A commercial plant has been constructed and commissioned on the basis of the data obtained from this pilot-scale operation.

In the extraction of level bridge pillars in the South Mine by square-setting methods the general practice is to work transversely from the hanging wall in narrow sections three or four sets wide to the depth of the bridge-usually three sets. When the working block attains an area of twelve square sets, sand filling is run in, either by pneumatic (Proceedings No. 123, 1941) or hydraulic methods, in order to control the settlement of the general area and prevent the development of undue weight in the stope. Upon completion of the filling operations, or coincident with them, ore breaking is resumed and the transverse section of the bridge pillar gradually reduced. A number of these parallel sections may be working at the same time.In preparing a block of sets for filling a great deal of paddocking is required, both to contain the filling and to preserve access to ladderways and ore chutes which may be situated at some horizontal distance. Compósitos magneto-elétricos (ME) combinam fases magnetostrictivas e piezoelétricas e podem ser utilizados na geração de energia a partir de vibrações e campos magnéticos presentes no ambiente, sendo também aplicáveis em sensores de campo magnético e em redes de sensores sem fio. Neste trabalho, um compósito ME foi processado pelo método cerâmico com 15 vol% CoFe2O4 (ferrita de cobalto) como fase magnetostrictiva e 85 vol% BaTiO3 como fase piezoelétrica. É mostrada a relação entre os parâmetros de processamento/sinterização e a microestrutura do compósito ME, com três tipos diferentes de arranjo das fases: particulado (obtido por dois diferentes métodos) e em camadas. Foram compactadas pastilhas dos compósitos para sinterização nas temperaturas de 1.200ºC, 1.300ºC e 1.400ºC por 4h, sendo que ocorreu a fusão da pastilha sinterizada a 1.400ºC. As amostras sinterizadas foram observadas em microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV), onde foram analisadas as características de porosidade, tamanho de grão e a distribuição das fases na microestrutura. Foram realizadas também análises cristalográficas por difração de raios-X (DRX), de espectroscopia RAMAN e de espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (EDS). Foram relacionados os parâmetros de processamento utilizados com os resultados obtidos.

The mining industry has the highest average annual fatality rate among major U.S. industries. To address this, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), is conducting major research programs to reduce the hazard exposure of miners. One of the recently concluded programs at PRL developed the enabling technology for remote-controlled mining. An application involves the manual process of extracting and hauling coal where operators, in the tight confines of a mine, can be struck or caught by mobile machinery. The approach to remedy this problem uses a guidance system on the continuous haulage equipment so that it follows the continuous mining machine that extracts coal. This, in essence, involves sensor-based docking of the machines. Sensors functioning in the hostile mine environment of dust, methane gas, and water play the key role. Computer analysis of the mining machine's movements and empirical machine characterizations established operating requirements and spatial limitations to ensure proper loading of coal into the haulage equipment. These data served in the selection of a guidance sensor. Technologies such as scanning laser systems and ultrasonic sensors have frequently been used in other applications, but were found unacceptable. However, a near-infrared sensor employing active targets met the requirements. The sensor has a nominal 75b conical field of view and a range from 0.1 to 18.0 m. For the single-target mode, nominal range accuracy was 4.3% at a distance of 3.65 m. Correction algorithms were generated, which reduced the error to 0.6%. Airborne dust testing showed less than an additional0.8% accuracy (worst case) degradation at dust levels up to 15 mg/m3. Using four targets, the nominal range accuracy was 0.4% without correction algorithms. Analysis of dynamic testing of a continuous miner and haulage showed that accuracy was maintained and total target loss did not occur. A guidance system for the haulage system to follow the mining machine does not exist commercially. Such a system can reduce fatalities, injuries, and exposure to dust and noise.

To provide technology that can help decrease the dependence of the U.S. aluminum industry on imported bauxite, the main ore of aluminum, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the extraction of aluminum from abundant domestic reserves of kaolinitic clay. Miniplant studies of the continuous leaching of calcined kaolin with boiling 25-pct HC1 acid resulted in a 93- to 99-pct extraction of the acid-soluble alumina in the calcined kaolin feed. Data are presented for an acid leaching study carried out in three or four continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR) in series, feed rates of 100 to 250 lb/hr of calcined kaolin, and total nominal residence times of 0.7 to 2.3 hr. A material balance for a 176-lb/hr calcined kaolin feed rate in a circuit consisting of three reactors, four classifiers, and five thickeners is given. Data provide detailed compositional and physical information for calcined kaolin, process liquors, and acid-leached residue solids.

This paper describes mining methods and practices of the Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Grant County, N. Mex. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. A similar program was conducted from 1928 to 1939, which helped to improve the efficiency of mining operations. The primary purpose of the program is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on methods, practices, and related features in mining mineral deposits. It is expected that the program will: (1) Promote efficiency in operating mines; (2) assist operators and engineers in evaluating and developing new mineral deposits; (3) provide data for engineering curriculums in mining schools; and (4) furnish performance and cost data for revising engineering handbooks and for inclusion in engineering textbooks.

The Department of Mineral Resources has a statutory responsibility for mine site environmental management and control in New South Wales. The Department is focusing on an environmental management systems (EMS) approach, as a management tool to achieve æbest practiceÆ outcomes both within our own organisation and on mine sites. One of the DepartmentÆs tools is environmental risk assessment and management which incorporates the Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Process (MREMP). The MREMP was introduced many years ago in order to integrate the activities of key stakeholders who may have a material interest in the mine. The MREMP provides an ideal mechanism by which ædue diligenceÆ requirements and environmental management programs can be integrated into mining operations and lead to a sustainable post-mining land use.

Geological mapping on the Canadian Shield in northeastern Alberta outlined severalgranitoid rock massespotentially suitable as building stone. A particularly attractive prospect, the Chipewyan Red Granite, was subjected to an aerial survey and ground check. The petrologic and fracture characteristics critical for quarrying and use as a building stone were assessed in the course of detailed mapping at two of the most favourable sites. The extension of good rock was tested to shallow depths at one site by shallow diamond-drill coring. , The Chipewyan Red Granite displays a warm red colour, medium grain size and fairly massive texture, and takes a good polish. Deleterious geologic features studied in outcrop and subjected to structural analysis included regular joint systems, quartz veins, pegmatite dykes, basic shear zones and fault zones. Many of these key geologic features are systematic and hence predictable for stone quarrying purposes; other features, such as irregular fracelM tures, are non-systematic and arefar less predictable. The megascopic structural features studied show similar preferred orientations which appear to be collectively related to the tectonic history.

This article should be of interest to SME members. It shows sustainable development type projects need not be massive or expensive. Smaller, utilitarian projects are equally valuable to developing communities as they seek to develop their own economic and social infrastructures. Joint Development Associates International (JDA) began humanitarian relief and community development in Central Asia in 1992, following the collapse of the former Soviet Union. Appropriate technology has played an important role in the company’s efforts to assist those segments of society that are most vulnerable to poverty and disease.

Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonites to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath, 1986 and personal communication). These bentonites typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X¬ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content.
