At the treatment plant of the Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, the zinc concentrates, with water, are pumped out to a more or less level area, and stored in dams to dry by drainage and evaporation.In-the construction of these dams a clay bank is first thrown up around the proposed dam site. The concentrate and water mixture are then run in from the perimeter, the solids being continuously shovelled up to increase the bank height, while the clear water is drained off at the centre and returned to the treatment plant.These dams vary in size up to 57,000 sq. ft. in area; when completed the banks are about 12 it. high, and the capacity for the largest dams is about 350,000 cub. ft., say, 20,000 tons.The survey office is called upon for a monthly survey of these dams, generally three of which are in process of building or refilling. The puggy nature of the material prohibits walking beyond the bank of the dam, therefore the following method of estimating concentrates was evolved. No originality is claimed, but as the need is for a true survey, and the results have shown the accuracy of the method, a description is warranted. The dam site is first laid out into 10-ft. squares with a theodoliteand 150-ft. steel tape, the outside lines being placed about 15 ft. from the clay bank - 15 ft. is the maximum convenient distance from the bank for working with the levelling staff mentioned later.As the dam is rarely rectangular in plan, the outside points pegged out are not always the corner of a square, but are placed to give the greatest convenience in later work, that is to say, there may be triangles and irregular figures. An analysis of the wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit was undertaken to quantitatively describe the circuit performance. On the basis of information developed in this study, the factors of major importance in reducing soluble loss are: filter wash, wash zone size, filter capacity, filter feed pulp dilution, blow back, filter cloth, water to repulp, water to primary wash, water to feed pulp and thickener underflow. The wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit has been used in many hydrometallurgical plants to separate solute from leach solids. As many as 20 to 30 plant operating variables determine the performance of the wash circuit and hence the soluble loss. The complex relationships of these variables, with each other and with soluble loss, make the evaluation of their effect on mill performance difficult. An analysis of this type of circuit was undertaken to quantitatively describe the circuit performance. THE CIRCUIT The diagram in Fig. 1 represents the operation of the wash thickener-two stage filter circuit. This circuit provides for counter current, cross current or for a combination of countercurrent-cross current operation. The feed pulp stream, J, is intended to include any solution or water, other than primary and secondary filtrate, which enters the wash thickener. Except for filter washing, the operations in the circuit are simple mixing operations which can be described by material balance. The concentration of solute in the filtrate and cake solution after application of wash liquor cannot be described by simple material balance. The Detroit salt mine is operated by the Detroit Salt Co. It is one of the oldest underground room-and-pillar mines in the United States still in production. Mining at the Detroit salt mine began in 1906 with the sinking of the No. 1 shaft. Mining continued through the years, becoming progressively more modern in its equipment and techniques, until it was closed in 1983. In 1997, after a period of care and maintenance, the newly formed Detroit Salt Co. decided to reopen the mine. Upon completion of an extensive rehabilitation program, salt production resumed in 1998. Production currently continues at a rate of 910kt/a (1 million stpy). To date, the Detroit salt mine has mined more than 45 Mt (50 million st).This mine is unique because it lies under a heavily urbanized area within metropolitan Detroit. The mine and its history make a good case study for the continuing coexistence between the mining industry and its environs.

Laser surface alloying was used to develop copper and molybdenum aluminides by injecting premixed copper and molybdenum powder particles into a laser-generated melt pool on an aluminium substrate. Different laser processing parameters were used to produce the composite thin layers on the substrate material. The microstructure and phase constituents of the composite layer were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Experimental results show that the matrix structure of the metal matrix composite layer consists of ?-CuAl2and MoAl5. Surface hardness was increased by a factor of 3.

A depth-sensing micro-indentation technique is developed for evaluating mechanical properties of materials at elevated temperatures (to 1200°C). System description and design considerations of the test apparatus are described. Based on Hertzian spherical indentation approach, the micro-indentation test apparatus is capable of determining Young?s modulus and creep strength of test materials with flat, tubular, or curved architectures from room to 1200°C under either air or controlled gaseous environments. Calibration tests were conducted on a H13 Tool Steel coupon from 22°C to 500°C and single crystal Haynes 230 alloy at 1000°C with excellent agreement to the literature values. Indentation creep tests of Haynes 230 alloy were carried out at 1200°C with preliminary results showing good correlation to creep exponents. Further system refinements will be investigated, and additional testing will be conducted.

"SUMMARYDuring December 1945, the Bureau of Mines began churn drilling the Winchester zinc deposit, 11 miles south of Joplin in Newton County, Mo. The deposit lies in a virgin area northwest of the Seneca fault. It is one of several deposits partly proven by drilling but never developed.Logs of 28 privately drilled holes had indicated a substantial tonnage without delimiting the deposit. It appeared that additional drilling might increase this reserve sufficiently to justify mining. A, total of 6,33 feet of churn drilling was completed in 17 holes drilled by the Bureau of Mines. Twelve of the holes penetrated minable ore extending the length of the known deposit and materially increasing its estimated tonnage.INTRODUCTIONDuring May 1943, the Winchester property in Newton County, was visited by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, accompanied by Dr. A. N. Winchester, owner, and Charles Keith, lessee of the property. At the request and with the assistance of these gentlemen, examination of the property was undertaken. Logs of 28 churn-drill holes were collected, hole locations were surveyed, and available historical data were obtained. It was concluded that although existing drill holes indicated considerable reserves, additional drilling might increase the tonnage substantially. In addition, it was believed that better knowledge of this ore deposit could be obtained by drilling further, and this knowledge could, in turn, be applied to other less proven deposits in the same field."

"In response to the severe drought on the Colorado River basin and in order to preserve existing water capacity to the Las Vegas Valley, the Southern Nevada Water Authority contracted a new deep-water intake (Intake No. 3) located in Lake Mead. The current project (Contract No. 070F-01-C1) includes 5 km (3 miles) of tunnel with very difficult geological conditions and a 200- m (650-ft) deep shaft and marine works. This paper will present the current status of the design-build contract being constructed by Vegas Tunnel Constructors and the challenges and problems faced and the innovative solutions developed to handle the difficult conditions encountered during tunneling with up to 15 bars of pressure.ProjectbackgroundThe Las Vegas Valley receives the majority of its water from Lake Mead, which is located approximately 30 km (20 miles) east of the Las Vegas, NV metropolitan area. Due to the severe drought that has hit the southwest region of the United States, the water level in Lake Mead has receded from its high water level of 372 m (1,221 ft) above mean sea level (amsl) to a low of 330 m (1,076 ft) amsl in June 2015. Should the lake level continue to fall, at elevation 320 m (1,050 ft) amsl, the current water intakes will not be able to draw enough water to meet the needs of the local area. The risk of losing water capacity has prompted the construction of a new deeper intake. Not only is the new Intake No. 3 situated at a lower elevation in the lake at 262 m (860 ft) amsl, the new Intake No. 3 is also located to draw better quality (Fig. 1).Project challengesThe project has had several difficult challenges to overcome:• The work consisted of a 1.2 kt (1,300 st) structure constructed on a barge and lowered 100 m (330 ft) into Lake Mead anchored with 9,200 m3 (12,200 cu yd) of tremie concrete.• The drill-and-blast starter tunnel was impacted by three inflow events, resulting in a one-year project delay.• One of the main challenges was selecting the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and excavating the tunnel with expected hydraulic head pressure of as much as 17 bar (16 bar was the highest pressure recorded during the drive), crossing faulted areas, low rock cover and the risk of tunnel instability due to direct connection with the lake.• Extensive pre-excavation grouting with a constant head pressure ranging from 12 bar to 15 bar.• Structural repair of the cutterhead in difficult hydrogeological conditions [water inflow of approx. 800 m3/hr (4,000 gpm)].• Complete repair of the cascade sealing system for the main bearing and two replacements of the pinion bearings.• The TBM approach to the intake structure."

Building indicators that respond to all stakeholders' needs is a time-consuming and complex exercise, with certain questions still unsolved. The aim of the current three-year research project, carried out in partnership between BRGM’s Mineral Resources Division and C3ED, is to propose a top-down / bottom-up indicators building methodology that combines conception and coordination methods and a participative approach. The tool-design phase is based partly on a comparative analysis of existing international initiatives according to different criteria (objective, observation scale, framework, etc.). The study of two African mining projects will provide the opportunity to confront the conceptual aspects with reality in the field. Careful consideration of the participants’ suggestions will result in a set of indicators that can be easily understood and adopted by all stakeholders. The final objective is to measure the impact of a mining site on a local, regional and national sustainable development frame, throughout the full life cycle of a mine.

Seismic While Drilling (SWD) is a newly developed technology in the mining industry. Improving upon Measurement While Drilling (MWD) systems, SWD measures mechanical properties of the rock at incremental depths down a blast hole at a much higher resolution. SWD is also immune to common failures and inconsistencies of MWD such as operator and drill specific variation. Seismic While Drilling records the velocity and elastic modulus of the rock with centimeter accuracy in real-time. These properties measured while drilling blastholes are then used as a proxy for density which can be used for: • High resolution geologic modeling • 3D ore control • Drill and blast optimization • Drill to mill tracking One of the distinct challenges with SWD systems is the sheer volume of information acquired. With thousands of measurements per blasthole, the data can be overwhelming for even an experienced engineer. To overcome this complex challenge, the latest cloud computing and analytics models have been simplifying and organizing the data. These newer technologies can amplify an engineer’s capability by delivering actionable insights into their drilling and blasting workflows. The paper presents new results from Datacloud during recent Seismic While Drilling trials in iron ore, metallurgical coal, and hard rock mines around the world. The measurements are compared with wireline geophysical logs, core data, drill cuttings, and conventional measurement while drilling (MWD) systems to validate the technology and show how the data can be used.

"Strategies to improve performance in mining production, maintenance and mineral processing operations have evolved over time from straightforward time studies of individual machine performance in the 1960s-1970s to more sophisticated and better focused statistical and financial tools that have emerged in the 1980s-1990s. These newer strategies fall under the broad descriptive category of operational excellence.Operational excellence is the term that embodies a number of performance evaluating strategies, the most popular and relevant to mining include the following:• Six sigma for addressing errors within mining or milling process and work standards.• Lean manufacturing to optimize organizational and operational performance through continuous improvement.There are other strategies that can be applied as well and this paper is not focused on a review of the pros and cons of any one strategy. However, the common threads in these strategies embody the expectation that expected results from these efforts can be quantified and that value will positively benefit the targeted work process, organizational unit, equipment deployment or time schedule when applied to it as part of continuous improvement efforts.The priority for proceeding with any one or more of these efforts is based on the calculated net value of the required resources to make the change versus the estimated value gained. The practice is identified as the value mapping process.This discussion summarizes the value mapping process methodology used at a mature uranium mine and mill in northern Canada to work through the myriad of potential improvement efforts available through the operational excellence process for continuous improvement."

Tower crane layout (TCL) is a typical construction site layout (CSL) problem, which is suitable for a wide range of work assignments and site conditions. Tower crane is one of the key facilities for vertical and horizontal transportation of materials, especially for heavy prefabrication units such as steel beams, ready mixed concrete, prefabricated elements and large panel formwork such as machinery and equipment, and a wide variety of other building materials within a construction site. However, it is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem to determine the locations of tower cranes with materials quantity supply and demand for engineers. Swarm intelligence (SI) was very popular and widely used in many complex optimization problems which was collective behaviour of social systems such as honey bees (bee algorithm, BA) and birds (particle swarm optimization, PSO). This study applied a hybrid swarm algorithm namely particle bee algorithm (PBA) based on a particular intelligent behaviour of honey bee and bird swarms by integrates theirs advantages. This study compares the performance of PBA with BA and PSO for a proposed hypothetical construction engineering of TCL with materials quantity supply and demand problem. Results show that PBA performs better performance than the mentioned algorithms on a proposed hypothetical TCL problem.

The problem of estimating the precision of systematic samples from a mineral deposit is attacked by interpolating the quality, or other attribute measured, by using Fourier approximation. Such approximation using trigonometric functions yields a particularly simple expression for the variance of the mean value of the attribute sampled. The increasing volume of publication in which the science of statistics has been applied to the problem of predicting the quality of an ore deposit from sets of samples taken from it might lead one to believe that engineering judgment can be replaced by statistics. There is, in fact, an implicit application of the principle of indifference or of "no advance knowledge" which has been discredited in modern statistical theory and practice. These pages will show that it is not always advantageous, efficient, or safe to apply this principle. This problem will be dealt with by using series of orthonormal functions to describe the distribution of the quality of ore in space as contrasted with the more commonly used distribution of quality as a frequency function. Mining engineers are rarely well acquainted with the use of such series or of the functions comprising them. These uses are commonplace in the fields of communication and information theory and it is not surprising that applications taken from these fields should be found appropriate for the analysis of the information contained in a set of samples from an ore deposit. It is hoped that presentation of the following basic, but incomplete, results will generate wider interest in this method and a fuller development of it as well as of the necessary computational techniques. FUNDAMENTAL PREMISES Random variables in the strictest sense are not very common in mine sampling. The sets of samples are almost always taken systematically and are, hence, not subject to all the laws governing random events. Therefore, unless there is indeed random experimental error in the determinations of quality, the treatment of systematic samples of n members as though they were random samples of n members often leads to calculation of confidence limits for the mean quality which are larger than they should be with the result that unnecessary additional sampling is done. The reason for this will emerge in the following discussion leading to Eq. 24 and its generalization. In order to inquire into such questions on a rigorous basis and at the same time avoid arithmetic complications that would obscure the concepts involved, a one dimensional distribution of quality will be assumed. A model pillar study was conducted in which the engineering principles of dimensional analysis were applied to the problem of coal mine pillar design. The paper reviews the theory of similitude as applied to the model pillar study conducted in the investigation. An example solution of a design problem is included to indicate how the results of the study may be used as a first approximation in the design of coal mine pillars. The design of mine pillars for adequate support with minimum loss of valuable raw materials has always presented a problem to the mining engineer. Most often, for lack of a better method, past practice has influenced the design of new mine pillars. This process has always left doubt as to the safety factor of the pillars. The work presented in this paper is an initial attempt toward adapting the engineering principles of dimensional analysis to the problem of pillar design in underground mines. The use of the dimensional analysis technique is advantageous because all the variables associated with the problem are considered, and by systematic analysis the relative influence of each variable is determined. The model material utilized in this study was taken from the Helena seam of the Cahaba coal field located in central Alabama. The research study was sponsored by The Southern Electric Generating Co. as part of an over-all rock mechanics investigation of the Helena seam area. THEORY OF SIMILITUDE Model analysis is used extensively in engineering today, particularly in the solution of design problems that defy the classical methods of analysis. Such problems arise when materials with a nonlinear stress-strain relationship are involved, when geo- metric boundaries are difficult to define in simple form, when strains become large, or when partial failure occurs. All of these difficulties usually exist in pillar design problems. Those principles which underlie proper design and construction of models, and the interpretation of test results, comprise the theory of similitude. That is, the theory of similitude includes a consideration of the conditions under which the behavior of two separate entities or systems will be similar, and the techniques of accurately predicting behavior of one from observation of the other. The theory of similitude may be developed by dimensional analysis. Dimensional analysis, as a powerful analytical tool, is developed from a consideration of the dimensions in which each of the important quantities involved in a phenomenon is expressed. It is based on two axioms: 1) Absolute numerical equality of quantities may exist only when the quantities are similar qualitatively. 2) The ratio of the magnitudes of two like quantities are dependent on the units used in their measurement, provided that the same units are used for evaluating each. Dimensional analysis, developed from these two axioms, differs from other types of analysis in that it is based solely on the relationships that must exist among the pertinent variables because of their dimensions, rather than on the relationship of natural laws. In itself, dimensional analysis ~rovides qualitative, rather than quantitative relationships, but when it is combined with experimental procedures, it may be made to supply quantitative results and accurate prediction equations. APPLICATION OF THEORY The design of an adequate mine pillar requires the determination of a design equation and the selection of a dimensional system with which to work. Since force plays an important part in the design of mine support, the FLT (force, length, time) system has been used. During August, 1926, with the consent of Mr. Schell, mine manager, the writer conducted a mill test on this company's concentrators. Mr. Schell not only gave him his permission, but rendered all possible assistance. Although it was impossible to take all the samples one could have wished to obtain, yet the salient points of the mill flow-sheet were sampled for a continuous period of eight hours, and from these samples and separate data supplied by the manager, valuable information was collected.THE MINEThis is a true vein-type of mine; the lode formations, striking almost due north-south, cut the large porphyritic intrusion at right angles. There are three distinct veins on this property - parallel, persistent, and dipping at an angle varying between 40° - 50° to the horizontal.The country rock is very sound, and timber, save for the small amount required for ore chutes, is entirely absent from all mine workings.The lode varies from a width of 1 in. to 8 in., but the stopes are carried forward with a minimurn width of about 30 in.The mine is particularly dry for a West Coast property, and conditions underground are very favourable. Corporate requirements are closely aligned with the GARD Guide principles of early geochemical characterization and prediction followed by selection and implementation of management strategies to prevent or minimize ARD. Each operation is required to design and implement an ARD and Mineral Waste Management Plan. Successful implementation of the plan requires commitment at all levels of the company, from senior management, to geologists, mine planners, environmental staff and equipment operators. Examples of the successful integration of ARD management strategies into mine operations are cited from several mines.

A study of the accessory opaque iron-titanium oxide minerals of the Oiles Complex, central Australia, was an Important complement to an investigation of the magnetic properties of the Complex. These minerals constitute no more than 10 per cent of the rocks sampled, and generally less than 1 per cent of the ultramafic rocks ("magnetite" concentrations were not sampled for magnetic investigation).Titanomagnetite is the main opaque mineral present, although ilmenite exsolution has been widely developed. High-temperature oxidation of these produced mainly titanohematite, pseudobrookite and rutile. Both exsolution and high-temperature oxidation developed along specific crystallographic directions (along {111}), and in Irregular patches. Low-temperature oxidation is generally not well-developed, indicating the small degree of weathering in the rocks sampled.Although the Oiles Complex is layered, no apparent overall preferred orientation of the iron-titanium oxide minerals was observed, other than crystallographically controlled alignment of very fine grains within pyroxene crystals. Other textural features of the opaque oxides are restricted to symplectic intergrowths mainly with the ferromagnesian silicates.

It is a great honour to address our Institute as President, but the choice of a suitable subject was not an easy one. In the past when the presidential address was given at an annual conference the subject usually related to the conference or industry concerned; more recently the subjects have been more philosophical and this is a distinct advantage to me.I appreciate that I am addressing an informed audience and I am sure' that you are well advised in many of the points that I hope to leave with you. Unlike the specialist who gets to know more and more about less and less and eventually knows everything about nothing, I am one of the group who gets to know less and less about more and more and eventually knows nothing about everything.I hope you will appreciate this point whilst you are listening to me.In recent years I have been closely associated with the problem that troubles most governments of our time: the competition of many groups of differing backgrounds for the land that is available to the nation.This is of particular interest to the industry with which we are concerned as it is of critical importance to the discovery and development of future reserves of minerals and metals. Part of my daily task is involved with the administration of legislation for mining operations and the conditions under which such operations may be undertaken, in implementing government policies relating to mining, and in designing and administering legislationdirected to safety and health in mines.Most of our members are involved in exploration or in day-to-day problems associated with the production of minerals or the management of companies in these pursuits and would be aware of many of the conflicting viewpoints on priorities.F. The merits of the various methods for dry-quenching coke have been the subject of numerous publications and almost equally numerous controversies for the past 40 years.5/ Most investigators have concluded that dry quenching is advantageous. Some have based their arguments on the improved physical properties of the resultant cokes. Others have claimed little or no improvement and have based their arguments on the economies acquired from the recovery and utilization of sensible heat. The extent to which the method of quenching influences the properties of the resultant cokes is of importance in connection with the operation of both commercial and experimental ovens. On the other hand, the recovery and utilization of sensible heat are economic problems related solely to commercial oven operation and- depend on the method of dry quenching used and the demand for a low intensity energy source. The scope of the present Bureau of Mines investigation has been limited to a comparative study of the properties of wet- and dry-quenched cokes produced from six coals and blends carbonized at flue temperatures of 2, 000° and 2,400° F. in the Tuscaloosa oven.

Safety is the most important aspect of haul road design. Although other aspects of road installation enter decisions on design, the safety of persons using the road has to be foremost for the duration of haul road usage. Other aspects of mad design focus on minimizing truck cycle time and fitting haul roads to the long-term configuration of the mine/quarry or construction project. Roads are often installed at high gradients for a short-term goal, but the long-term benefits are easily shown with lower gradient haul roads which provide better cycle times and lower operating costs.

In 1937 the employees of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd.. at Timmins. Ont., Canada, approached organized medicine for a plan to provide themselves and their families with a complete medical service including hospitalization. This approach was made because of two conditions: (1) the necessity for some organization whereby contributions could be made in instalments to offset the sudden and large expense connected with illness for which the average employee is not prepared, and (2) the need for a more cohesive quality of service to replace a contract practice then in vogue, which did not take care of the employee's family or dependents. In different parts of the United States and Canada similar plans were in force, not only for employed groups but for numbers of people in circumscribed areas. In Europe different countries had adopted various forms of health insurance plans. It then was no surprise that these employees as a group should ask for some similar plan. With the cooperation of the management, a plan was instituted. The plan has one object only—the provision of medical services, including the accessory services such as hospitaliza-tion, X-rays, nursing, and necessary drugs and medicines. It is not concerned with cash benefits, sickness and accident payments, or any form of monetary return as the result of illness, but is simply an organization to provide medical services and pay for them from a central fund. It is a nonprofit organization and the only shareholders are the employees and their families who contribute and who in turn receive services. The Hollinger plan is limited to the employees of the Hollinger mine, who live in Timmins and the immediate vicinity. At first, the membership was voluntary. In the third year, it was made a condition of employment, with the proviso that at the end of any Association financial year an employee may withdraw if he wishes to do so. After withdrawal, he cannot again become a member until the end of the next Association year, and then only by the payment of the back dues. This step was taken to ensure continuity, and to prevent employees from withdrawing when well and reentering when faced with impending illness or operations. The employee himself is subject to medical examination on application for employment, and if accepted is subject to further examination by a specialist in chest diseases under the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. Thus it is possible to exclude those who have heart disease, tuberculosis, or other disabling conditions when first employed. Wives and families of employees are not subject to medical examination but other dependents of an employee—mother, father, or other relative—who are declared by the employee to be wholly dependent upon him must be examined.
