In the Bendigo district, with its large number of comparitively small leases worked by separate companies, we might naturally expect to find many different arrangements of winding machinery and, as a matter of fact, there are steam winches, old portable engines, single and duplex geared engines, twin engines on the first motion, and in one instance a single engine on the first motion, all employed for hauling purposes from depths of 1000 feet and over.It would be impossible in the compass of this paper to discuss at all fully the various arrangements of winding gear employed on the field the writer can simply refer to some of the more prominent features, in the hope that the information may prove of interest and benefit to the mining community. In criticising our machinery it must be remembered that when many of the plants in use at the present time were erected, they were not intended to wind from more than one third of the depths now common on the field; but so long as the machine could be made to haul a tank of water from the bottom of the shaft it has remained, the greater power required being obtained by increasing the piston speed and altering the gear wheels to suit. The consequence is, of course, that in some of our mines the speed of winding is painfully slow this feature, however, though certainly not consistent with modern ideas of economical mining, does not so seriously affect Bendigo as it would other fields, for the comparatively small quantity of stone to be raised from a given reef by some...

"A kinematically admissible velocity field is applied to study the arching phenomenon in a cohesionless granular backfill placed between two rough vertical inflexible walls. The study is different from the previous works which are almost entirely based on statically admissible stress fields. It is shown that the development of arches is strongly influenced by the previous loading history of the backfill which controls the nature of the constitutive laws that govern the mode of stress deformation of the backfill. This preliminary study employs simple models in order to show the potential use of such an approach in evaluating and understanding mine backfill behaviour in the underground excavation. The pressure exerted on the floor supporting the backfill is also studied in some detail.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the importance of the design of mine backfill has been discussed extensively by a number of authors, i.e. Hassani et al. (1985), such theories have not as yet been incorporated in design criteria for underground mine backfilling operation . One factor that such theories must incorporate is the so-called arching action .The phenomenon of arching has been the subject of study by many researchers in the field of civil engineering and mining engineering. Among these scholars the works of Terzaghi (1943), Krynine (1945), Lusher and Hoeg (1964) and Handy (1985) are noteworthy. All these authors use a statically admissible stress field as a starting point to develop their theories. The approach taken by the authors of the present paper is completely different because they employ a kinematicallyadmissible velocity field. It is their belief that the arching phenomenon is closely linked to the interlocking of grains as manifested by the degree of dilatation of the granular mass when subjected to a shearing process.This paper is written in the following sequence. To define the interlocking quantitatively it is necessary to state the constitutive law governing the stress deformation characateristics of the granular mass. This is done in the next section as the law proposed by Poorooshasb and Pietruszazck (1985, 1986) is stated and simplified to suit the present analysis. Next the mode of formation of an arch in a simple system consisting of a mass of backfill sandwiched between two vertical rough walls of infinite extent is examined. The velocity field obtained from the above example is used to obtain solutions to two more complicated situations. The first situation assumes that the backfill is supported, in addition to the vertical rough walls, by a Winkler foundation at its base. The second situation assumes that the Winkler foundation has been replaced by a horizontal beam of uniform section and simply supported at its extremities. The findings of the study are summarized and their practical implications discussed in the concluding remarks."

This paper deals with the application of table flotation to two unusual mineral dressing problems. Both problems involved the removal of interfering minerals at sizes too coarse to normal froth flotation.The first problem was the removal of arsenical minerals from Broken Hill gravity concentrates without further size reduction. Table flotation without grinding of the original concentrates gave almost complete rejection of the arsenic from the concentrates. A typical test result was a reduction of arsenic in jig concentrate from 0.75% arsenic to 0.007% arsenic.The second problem was to develop a method to produce a high grade calcium carbonate concentrate from coastal dune sands containing about 10% silica and about 80% calcium carbonate. The sands were about 30 mesh British Standard Screen (B.S.S.), and for economic and other reasons it was stipulated that the separation be made without grinding. Again, table flotation gave excellent results. A concentrate was produced containing 99.62% acid soluble material, representing a recovery of 98.69% of the calcium carbonate in the feed with a rejection of 96.44% of the silica.The investigations' were carried out at the Kalgoorlie Metallurgical Laboratory, under the Department of Mines...

The coal mining industry in the western United States is seeing the same boom as the rest of the country and the world. Most coal mines in the West are operating flat out as the nation’s appetite for energy continues to grow. And many of the coal mines have either increased their production capacities or are in the process of doing so. However, transportation issues along with environmental restrictions are keeping many mines from expanding even further. Some coal companies held off on further expansion plans until Congress and President Bush could agree on a national energy policy, one that recognizes coal as the nation’s leading source of electricity. In August, Congress passed and the president signed into law such a measure (see Washington Survey, page 7). The legislation includes research funding for clean coal technologies. So western and eastern coal could become even more important in the national energy picture. This is particularly true as supplies of natural gas diminish and the price of oil continues to increase.

The labour question is one that has caused mine managers much thought and anxiety and is likely to continue to do so as long as human beings exist. The difficulty is to devise some arrangement whereby the interests of miner and mine ownerare identical. Mines cannot be worked without capital, and capital is no good without labour, yet, though both have the mine in common, their interests are not exactly the same. Some men are happy so long as they can scrape through by exerting themselves as little as possible, but capitalists do not work mines for charity, they want some return for their money.Where a large number of men are employed there are bound to be examples of all sorts, good and bad, and it is because one cannot depend on all, that different methods of employment have to be adopted. Which method is selected depends to a great extent on the labour market, local conditions, nature of the ore and the way in which it occurs.A big step towards success is obtained by securing the services of good bosses, not only those who know how work should be done, but men who have a knowledge of human nature. It is a big mistake to be too lenient with a man, also to be unnecessarily harsh. A good boss will always be sought out by good men who have worked under him before, or who have heard of him from others. By a good boss we do not mean one who employs two men where one would do, or who lets the men loaf...

Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a roomand-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90%. But, the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing oversprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99% and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

Samples of a refractory copper ore were examined to test their response to segregation roasting, flotation, and acetonitrile leaching. Recoveries in the segregation roasting stage were between 60 and 100 per cent, while flotation recoveries varied between 60 and 85 per cent in cleaner concentrates assaying 25-40 per cent copper.The fraction of the copper which could be leached from the concentrate by an acetonitrile/sulphuric acid/cupric ion leach solution varied from 16 to 97 per cent, the lower recoveries being correlated with the presence of sulphide in the concentrate.

INTRODUCTION The Bunker Hill mine, located at Kellogg, ID, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, has been a major pro¬ducer of lead-zinc-silver ore since 1887. Since its dis¬covery, it has produced over 25 401 171 t (28 million st) of ore from 20 to 25 veins and ore zones. The mine now covers an area of approximately 1.609 km (1 mile) in length and 0.8 km (1/2 mile) in width and extends from 1097 m (3600 ft) above sea level to 488 m (1600 ft) below sea level. Production is presently at a rate of 1542 t/d (1700 stpd). During 1965, a new stoping method, the Bunker Hill pillar system, was developed to enable the profitable mining of large, low-grade zinc ore bodies. The system was specifically designed to in¬corporate the Atlas Copco T26GH rubber-tired loaders. High productivities were achieved, and the method was adapted for mining the higher grade stopes where large timber square sets are utilized. This results in nearly 100% extraction. GEOLOGY The area encompassing the Bunker Hill mine lies immediately south of the Osburn fault, a major east-west striking, deep-seated strike slip fault which is the dominant structural feature in the Coeur d'Alene district. The Bunker Hill forms a series of veins and mineralized zones which occur as link structures, tension fractures, and breccia zones in folded, interbedded argillaceous quartzites of the Revett and St. Regis formations of the Precambrian belt series. The Rosco ore body is predominantly a zinc ore body above the Cate fault, which is presently known to occur from the 13 level. [elevation 488 m (1600 ft)] to the 1600 level [elevation 304 m (1000 ft) ]. These ore bodies are stringer zones with at least one dominant 1.8 to 4.5 m (6 to 15 ft) wide band of ore. They dip 0.09 to 0.26 rad (5° to 15°) steeper than the local 0.61 rad (35°) dip of the Cate fault, and also deviate 0.26 to 0.52 rad (15° to 30°) in strike from the Cate. Because of the flat dip and fractured weak hanging wall, normal cut-and-fill mining has not proven practical in this ore body. The mechanized timber methods described in the next section and the Bunker Hill pillar system are the mining methods successfully used. The concept of installing a steel sheet pile retaining wall into the ground by "pressing" has resulted in the development of various equipment solutions over the last thirty years e.g. Taylor Woodrow ?Pile Master', Giken 'Silent Piler" & Tosa 'Still Worker?. Dawson Construction Plant Ltd (DCP), have recently advanced the pile pressing concept with the introduction of their 'Push-Pull' system. This advancement offers significant improvements in the quality of installation compared with traditional pressing solutions but also greater versatility, higher productivity and, most importantly, generates new opportunities through a wider range of applications for "silent piling'. This paper will focus primarily on the use of the Push-Pull concept in the construction of a unique "integral" bridge in Milton Keynes, England. Finally, the paper touches on the development of quiet, vibration-less pile extraction equipment, which allows steel to be considered the foundation material of choice for truly sustainable construction. It is no longer acceptable to leave unwanted piles in the ground.

Copper production through smelting generates large volumes of material flows. As copper contained in ore becomes copper contained in concentrate to be fed into the smelting process, it leaves behind an altered landscape, sometimes mine waste, and always mill tailings. Copper concentrate, fluxing materials, fuels, oxygen, recyclables, scrap and water are in-puts to the process. Dust (recycled),gases — containing carbon dioxide(CO2) (dissipated) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) (mostly collected, transformed and sold) and slag (discarded or sold) — are among the significant process outputs. This article reports estimates of the flows of these input/output materials for a particular set of smelters studied in some countries. They include Chile (Altonorte, Caletones, Chagres, Chuquicamata, LasVentanas and Potrerillos), Japan(Naoshima, Onahama, Saganoseki,Tamano and Toyo), the United States(Garfield — Fig. 1 — Miami and Hayden) and Europe (Glogow I, Glogow II, Huelva, Norddeutscheand Ronnskar).

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. This report is the 24th in a series summarizing research on coal and related investigations3 by the Bureau of Mines. The coal programs of the Bureau of Mines include a wide range of theoretical and applied studies--such as fundamental studies of coal structure and properties, the development and evaluation of new mining techniques, and work toward more effective processing and utilization of coal. The scope of these programs is indicated, in topical outline, by the table of contents. These investigations are integrated into a broad but coordinated effort to develop information on coal that will benefit the coal mining industry and the coal consumer while promoting the wise conservation and utilization of our national coal resources. Any attempt to summarize in one volume the progress in all of the program areas indicated must necessarily be limited to a brief review of developments, without detailed reporting of the data. However, while the brief discussion in each section will present only the highlights of the Bureau's work during the year, details of many of the operations or investigations described here can be found in the publications cited throughout the text. Other work, reported here for the first time, will be covered in greater detail in later publications.

The mine surveillance and communication system hereafter described provides continuous local and remote monitoring of several parameters critical to normal mine operation at each of ten underground sites in the Bruceton Research Mine. The techniques employed are well proven and have been care-fully chosen to provide the best solution to the technical problems involved while giving special attention to economic considerations.

The Underground Injection Control program was promulgated in 1981 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Placement of mine waste backfill underground is considered underground injection under the provisions of this program. A major issue is whether mine waste that is regulated as a contaminant source on the surface should be disposed of underground. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to investigate the impacts of mine waste sandfill on the quality of ground water. Analyses of water samples collected before and after contact with sandfill in a 10-year-old stope, as well as samples of the sandfill itself, were used to ascertain the influence of the sandfill after mine closure and subsequent flooding. Computer models supported the hypothesis that oxidation of pyrite by oxygen, accompanied by dissolution of carbonates, was the predominant reaction controlling the quality of the water being discharged from the stope. Concentrations of metals released as a result of acid production remained near or below detection limits. Metals release after mine flooding is expected to remain low as a result of the buffering by the sandfill and the reduced rate of oxidation.

"The smoke nuisance, like many other undesirable and longstanding features in our present civilization, is still with us. On reviewing the situation we are astonished to find no authentic record of a major smoke-abatement campaign that has succeeded in eliminating a smoke nuisance, in spite of the fact that the problem has been with us since the use of bituminous coal began. We might well ask ourselves where the trouble lies; is the problem impossible of solution? We can not blame the average citizen for harboring this thought as a conviction. He has been urged for so long but sees so little evidence of progress. He has repeatedly been assured by the scientist and the engineer in most convincing terms that smoke. is unnecessary, that it can be avoided; small wonder is it that he is beginning to distrust so-called authority on the subject.On the other hand, the scientist and engineer are entirely within their rights. We all know that even high-volatile coal can be and is now being burned with no visible smoke. We know that even small domestic heating furnaces, with favorable conditions and with proper care, can be fired by hand without producing much smoke. And we know that when such equipment is fitted with suitable stoking devices, little or no smoke results. What, then, is the answer?Perhaps we may learn something from a critical examination of a typical smoke-abatement problem. Probably one of the most enlightening campaigns that has been waged in the United States is that of Salt Lake City, Utah; therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the important aspects of this particular case."

In the early 1970s, it became a concern that exposure to the mineral fibers associated taconite ore processed in Silver Bay, Minnesota would cause asbestos-related disease including gastrointestinal cancer. At that time data gaps existed which have now been significantly reduced by further research. To further our understanding of the types of airborne fibers in Silver Bay we undertook a geological survey of their source the Peter Mitchell Pit, and found that there are no primary asbestos minerals at a detectable level. However we identified two non-asbestos types of fibrous minerals in very limited geological locales. Air sampling useful for risk assessment was done to determine the type, concentrations and size distribution of the population of airborne fibers around Silver Bay. Approximately 80% of the airborne fibers have elemental compositions consistent with cummingtonite-grunerite and the remaining 20% have elemental compositions in the tremolite-actinolite series. The mean airborne concentration of both fiber types is less than 0.00014 fibers per milliliter that is within the background level reported by the World Health Organization. We calculate the risk of asbestos-related mesothelioma and lung cancer using a variety of different pessimistic assumptions. (i) that all the non-asbestos fibers are as potent as asbestos fibers used in the EPA-IRIS listing for asbestos; with a calculated risk of asbestos-related cancer for environmental exposure at Silver Bay of 1 excess cancer in 28,500 lifetimes (or 35 excess cancers per 1,000,000 lifetimes) and secondly that taconite associated fibers are as potent as chrysotile the least potent form of asbestos. The calculated risk is less than 0.77 excess cancer case in 1,000,000 lifetimes. Finally, we briefly review the epidemiology studies of grunerite asbestos (amosite) focusing on the exposure conditions associated with increased risk of human mesothelioma. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. This paper demonstrates an application of a recently developed Risk-Cost-Benefit (RCB) Framework to environmental risk management in the mining industry. The environmental application of the RCB Framework as part of an ACARP project (Kizil, Bye and Joy, 2012) involved a thorough selection process with site visits and in-depth discussions with the case study siteÆs environmental management team. Under their guidance, the highest risk of environmental impact at the case study site was identified as æroad subsidenceÆ at the time when the project work was undertaken. This paper presents the unique application of the RCB Framework to examine the risk of mining-induced subsidence and its impact on one of AustraliaÆs busiest highways, with a traffic volume of 38 000 vehicles per day (NSW RTA AADT, 2008). The RCB Framework was employed to assess the optimum group of controls for road subsidence risk management to ensure highway availability while mining occurs. Whilst this paper focuses on road subsidence, the methodology employed can be directly applied to other environmental concerns including preparation for mine closure, rehabilitation planning and waste management. The RCB Framework incorporates mathematical modules which were developed to enable complex yet tightly integrated RCB calculations. The process integrates the risk-control effectiveness assessment to determine that the selected safety initiative is financially beneficial to the mine site and company. This concept has been applied to a number of high-risk mining areas targeting safety, productivity and environmental issues. This paper introduces the five-staged RCB Framework, incorporating the RCB tools RCBGEN (Risk-Cost-Benefit Generator) and RCEMETHOD (Risk-Control-Effectiveness Method), and demonstrates its practical application to the risk management of a road subsidence case study. The case study looks at potential pavement damages, in particular, the occurrence of pavement stepping on the surface of the highway as a result of vertical subsidence. This type of road damage was previously experienced at another major inter-city route while underground mining occurred in the region where the case study site is located. The RCB Framework has been successfully applied to the analysis of the road subsidence case study and determined the risk reduction and financial benefits of implementing a range of risk-controls. User-friendly RCB Charts to provide an aid for decision-making were produced. The value of using the RCB charts to achieve balance between risk, cost and productivity in the decision-making process for risk management has been explained. The case study determined that pavement slots and fibre-optic cable monitoring were relatively low-cost and effective controls applied in the mining industry for the first time at a global level.This paper supports the industryÆs ongoing efforts to manage risk to ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable) and achieve æzero harmÆ by providing a new Framework to more effectively establish the adequacy of controls.CITATION:Kizil, G V, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. Current and potential dragline reclamation usage was evaluated for the U.S. coalfields based on data gathered and analyzed during field surveys, literature reviews and contacts with manufacturers. It was concluded that current mining plans have been adapted to federal and state strip mine and reclamation laws in ways which limit the potential for dragline reclamation systems at active mine sites. At abandoned conventional contour mine sites in steep-sloping areas such as central Appalachia, however, it was found that dragline reclamation systems have great potential application and may be the only practical solution to many reclamation problems. Alternative dragline systems were examined for restoring abandoned sites, and it was concluded that a tower excavator system offered superior characteristics and should be evaluated and developed under field conditions. A testing program was developed to provide a framework for the monitoring and analysis of cost, production and environmental data during a field demonstration of a tower excavator system.

The object of this investigation is to determine the field for the use of detachable bits in metal mines of the United States by correlating the data developed through the experience of mines using these bits. Most of the metal-mining districts in the Middle Western and Eastern States already have been visited. The purpose of the present circular is to define the problem and to discuss the factors that must be considered in order to determine, under different operating conditions, the advantages and disadvantages of this type of bit. Some of the data obtained to date are presented to emphasize points made in the discussion. It is hoped that, as the study progresses, a great many data on drilling will become available. It is evident that since in some cases these data will be confidential they cannot, therefore, be published except as they may be included in average figures covering several different mines. Some data already secured are of this nature, Although considerable information on drilling operations has been gathered at different mines, there were only a few instances in which there were available complete data on all the factors entering into the total cost of drilling with detachable bits and with conventional bits on regular drill steel.
